Architecture by Daniel Andrieu and interior design by the Pierangelo Andreani Studio, Fountaine Pajot launched the MY 44 in early 2017 with the promise of it being the shipyard’s most successful power catamaran. True to their word, Fountaine Pajot did unveil a power catamaran with not only an extremely spacious saloon and accommodations but also a remarkably fuel-efficient sailing experience.

DESIGN – INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

Fountaine Pajot completely reconceptualized the use of space on a catamaran. Instead of the traditional transoms, the MY 44 boasts a fixed and a hydraulic teak beach that stretches full beam and is controlled with a remote. From the platform, a couple of steps lead up to the deck from both port and starboard side and then another set of steps lead up to the symmetrical side-decks. The side-decks are wide and well-protected by the rails that come up to about 25 inches.

The forward cockpit of the MY 44 is spacious and consists of two comfortable lounges on each of the sun pads. With no trampoline, the forward cockpit offers a large, unencumbered space for looking out at the sea or relaxing in the sun. The two storage lockers on the forward cockpit are also deep and wide, ideal for storing linens and additional equipment.

Fountaine Pajot has also moved away from the traditional design of the aft cockpit where it also served as a dining area. Now, the cockpit serves primarily as a seating area and appears to be a mere extension of the saloon when the sliding glass door is wide open. The bench seat across the stern faces forward and has storage lockers underneath. It is entirely covered from the top with a drop-down canvas for added protection from the sides.

From the port side of the aft deck, a stylish spiral staircase leads to the flybridge which can easily house up to 8 people for dinner. It features an L-shaped settee wrapped around a wooden desk and a large sun pad that can be converted into seats facing forward. There is also an additional station with a drawer fridge, storage, sink, and a trash case. On the hard-top roof of the flybridge, a shade can be pulled back to reveal a sunroof.

The saloon of the MY 44 is not only commodious but also has considerable headspace. At the direct entrance from the cockpit is a contemporary galley from where the main living area is a step up.

The galley of the MY 44 is U-shaped and has plenty of storage space in the form of cupboards and drawers as well as multiple storage compartments underneath the floor. The countertops are sleek and extensive and are fitted with double stainless steel sinks. The galley is equipped with a convection cooktop, oven, and a full-sized fridge and freezer.

The saloon of the MY 44 is designed in a modern and stylish fashion with a couch to starboard side and an L-shaped settee to port. Surrounded by the settee is a wooden cocktail table which can also be easily converted into an expansive dining table. The saloon enjoys an all-around view of the outside with panoramic windows and is also well-ventilated because of the two opening hatches.

The saloon also has an interior helm station in addition to the exterior helm station. The interior helm station is to the starboard side (like the exterior station) and features a bench seat for two behind the wheel and a large navigation instrument panel, making the station fully-equipped and fully-functional.

All in all, the saloon of the MY 44 is exceedingly impressive due to its clever use of space and the comfort and luxuries it offers.

ACCOMMODATIONS

In the Maestro version of the MY 44 catamaran, there are three cabins in total with the entire port hull dedicated to the owner’s suite.

The owner’s suite in the port hull boasts an exclusive king-sized island bed with lateral access which faces a rectangular window. There is ample storage space within the cabin too in the form of drawers, cupboards, and storage underneath the bed. There are also quite a few storage compartments underneath the floors, seamlessly blended with the flooring. The cabin itself is kept bright and airy with LED spotlights, bedside reading lights, and a large porthole. The en-suite bathroom has a separate shower and head and also offers considerable storage space in the form of cabinets. The bathroom, too, is well-ventilated with a porthole, a deck hatch, and an extractor fan.

The starboard consists of two cabins and two bathrooms with the aft cabin being slightly bigger. The aft cabin has a queen-sized island bed while the forward cabin has twin beds. Both offer storage furniture, bedside reading lights, and ventilation via porthole

ENGINE ROOMS

The MY 44 is powered by standard 260 HP Volvo Penta IPS 350 twin diesel engines. The engine rooms of the catamaran are accessed from the aft cockpit. The starboard engine room also houses a generator and the cruise air system. Both the rooms are neat and spacious, comfortably placed for all the routine maintenance checks.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

The overall length of Fountaine Pajot MY 44 is 13.4 meters and it has a beam of 6.61 meters. The full load displacement of the catamaran is 22.5 tonnes. It has a total fuel capacity of 2000 liters and a total freshwater capacity of 700 liters.

Patrick and Janet Hayes, a retired couple and happy owners of “Chapter Too”, are living the dream life aboard their Fountaine Pajot MY 44. These two environmentally conscious cruisers spent several of the last five years cruising the world promoting awareness on environmental issues.

“We would describe our boat as a “floating condo”.  We’ve always loved the water and have lived on a boat since 2014, so when it came time to transition to power, we wanted living space, storage and stability on the water that only Motor Yachts catamarans offered for this size.”

“Our MY 44 arrived in October 2018 and we moved aboard in December 2018, just before the holiday season.  At the time of delivery,  Chapter Too  was wrapping up at the St. Petersburg Boat Show in Florida.  We quickly moved aboard and began preparing the boat for long-distance cruising. We cruised Florida for Christmas and New Years, so our family could join us and share the experience of our new boat.

The main reason the Fountaine Pajot MY 44 appealed to us was the speed, spaciousness and build quality. Plus, losing a tall mast gave us the option to cruise the ICW (Inter Coastal Water-Bay) when the weather wasn’t optimal”

Before acquiring their Fountaine Pajot MY 44, Pat and Janet sailed the South Pacific on a 45-foot sailing catamaran. After returning to the US, they sailed Cuba and the east coast before deciding to shift to power and purchase their first motor yacht.

“After the holidays, we spent some time having warranty work completed before heading to the Bahamas for the 2019 spring season.   While in the Bahamas, we cruised as far north as the Grand Bahamas, the Berry Islands, Eleuthera, Nassau and south through the Exuma Islands.  On several occasions in various areas of the Bahamas we worked collecting plastic rubbish and cleaning beaches.

The best memories of the summer were when our family, including our grandson, joined us on the boat for Janet’s surprise 60th birthday over Labor Day weekend in Boston, MA. Prior to that weekend, the first family experience was during the December 2018 holiday season. The boat was very comfortable. We could sleep seven adults and one child comfortably, enjoy meals together on the large dining table, and relax on the flybridge with sundowners at sunset.”

Chapter Too arrived back to the U.S. in May 2019 before heading north along the coast of the U.S.

“The float plan was to head north up the eastern seaboard to Maine before turning around at the end of the summer season. While the plan was fast and loose, there was always the option to slow down or speed up depending on the conditions and weather. As the summer progressed, we quickly learned that we enjoyed cruising between locations at high speed in the Atlantic Ocean versus cruising the Intercoastal Waterway. Our stops were planned based on distance but also the option to play along the way.

Aboard  Chapter Too  we saw the Chesapeake Bay and continued up to Atlantic City, New York City, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.  As the summer was ending, we realised that Maine wouldn’t be an option, therefore the turnaround point was Gloucester, MA.”

At the time of the Fountaine Pajot Magazine publication, Patrick and Janet were heading south down the eastern seaboard while dodging storms.  Their plan was to arrive in Key West, FL for the holiday season so their immediate family can join them once again. They will then decide their next plan of action for the 2020 calendar year.

“In our travels, we meet all kinds of people and many are curious about our FP MY44. We have shown  Chapter Too  to numerous people who are genuinely interested in a boat of this size.  We have shared our experiences about the liveability of the boat and the ease with which two people can handle this size boat.  We’ve loved every moment onboard the MY 44 and look forward to making even more memories in the future.”

Description

Fountaine Pajot MY 44 is a multi-deck power catamaran with a hardtop. The vessel with a fiberglass hull can be operated in the mode of sea crossings. The shipyard provides customers with the opportunity to make changes to the interior from the ANDREANI DESIGN bureau and complement the living spaces of the catamaran with options. Customers have access to various options for the layout of the lower, panoramic glazed deck: a master cabin with one bathroom, two double cabins with two bathrooms.

On the flybridge under the hardtop there is an additional control post with two movable chairs, a sunbed, a galley and a dining area with a table and a corner sofa. On the bow of the middle deck, there is a lounge area with sun loungers and a pool bowl. Immediately behind it is a closed salon with the main helm station, a galley complete with furniture, a stove, a microwave oven, an oven and a dining area with sofas and a table. The cockpit has a straight transom sofa with lockers for storing equipment, diving equipment, personal belongings of passengers. Through the sliding doors of the salon there is a passage to the bathing platform with a retractable ladder.

Fountaine Pajot MY 44 is equipped with two VOLVO PS 350 propulsion systems. A fuel capacity in two tanks of 2000 l and fresh water of 700 l ensure high autonomy of the vessel.

Power catamarans have been gaining popularity, bringing the rest of us in line with the thinking of France-based Fountaine Pajot , which has been in the power-cat game since in 1998. Its latest model is the Motor Yacht 44, the new flagship in a three-model motoryacht series.

The MY44, a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

With the sliding doors to the cockpit open, the salon’s focal point becomes the U-shaped galley aft. It has a four-burner Bosch cooktop, a microwave, a full-size fridge/freezer and more. The galley offers access not only to guests in the cockpit, but also to those on the salon’s 7-foot-long sofa with a corner table and chair to port, or on the twin couch to starboard.

At the business end of the MY44, the forward helm console is sized for two 22-inch displays, and a Volvo Penta throttle and joystick are to starboard. Teak-capped side steps lead to 24-inch-wide side decks, and safety railings encircle the main deck. Forward is recessed seating with a table, perfect for watching dolphins swim in the MY44’s bow wake. Aft, a hydraulic swim platform accommodates a dinghy or Jet Ski for venturing ashore.

Three- and four-stateroom layouts are available. The MY44 that I toured had the four-stateroom setup. The master suite was in the port hull with an entry staircase aft. The king island berth was set athwartships with views out the hullside windows. With more than 6-foot headroom and light alpine furnishings, the stateroom felt airy. Forward was an en suite head with a sink, toilet and shower stall. Twin-berth staterooms were in the starboard hull, with an amidships entrance. Forward on the main deck was a fourth stateroom, ideal for crew or kids.

Optional twin 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels coupled to pod drives give the MY44 a top-end around 24 knots, according to the builder. IPS500s are standard.

With a family-size layout, an admirable turn of speed, and twin hulls for added stability, the Fountaine Pajot MY44 should appeal to salty souls with a sense of adventure.

Into the Brine

For swimmers, snorkelers and divers, Fountaine Pajot’s MY44 has a nearly full-beam, hydraulic teak swim platform. It should make getting into the water easy, even in fins.

Built for Owner-Operators

The engine rooms in each hull allow full access around the Volvo Penta diesels and IPS pod-drive components. Fuel filters, the 15 kVA Fischer Panda generator, water heaters, strainers, batteries and other maintenance-needing items are all reachable. The deck hatches are beefy with a 2-inch lip and rubber seal to prevent water intrusion. Sound control is from 1½-inch foam on the hatch’s underside, and the walls are padded with ­sound-absorbing insulation.

Virgin Charter Yachts is a private charter company that has specialized in offering motor yachts and power catamarans for charter in the British Virgin Islands since 1996.    Our company offers a personally curated fleet of only ~25 luxury yachts for charter, and this allows us to provide extensive preventative maintenance to our yachts and they show more like private yachts rather than the typical 'charter boats' seen at the big companies that have 300+ yachts to maintain.  

Tidewater joined our BVI fleet new in March of 2020 and has been constantly maintained and upgraded by our team of in-house engineers and shipwrights and she shows in above-average condition.   The BVI was closed to tourists from March 2020 until May 2021, so Tidewater has seen very light charter use, as is illustrated by her low hours and fantastic overall condition. 

The primary benefit to charter yacht ownership is that by offering your yacht for charter, you are able to generate charter income that in most cases, offsets all the annual costs of ownership.  Rather than paying your monthly dockage, insurance, power/water, maintenance etc. out-of-pocket, the revenue you make from charter covers these monthly bills for you.  In addition to charter revenue, there are huge financial opportunities through leveraging effective tax strategies for your yacht purchase as well as depreciation.

Fountaine Pajot MY 44 Review: Yacht on Skies

Generously spacious and attractively designed, with well-tailored interior spaces and extraordinary seaworthiness, this all-new Fountaine Pajot MY 44 is a fine contribution to the motor-powered catamaran segment

Fountaine Pajot MY 44 attracted a lot of attention at the January Boot Düsseldorf and then we arranged for testing this attractive yacht off Palma de Mallorca, to get to know all the features that contribute to her listing in the yacht category.

On board the Fountaine Pajot MY 44

Before we even asked, her builder pointed out that this vessel hadn’t evolved from the usual catamaran sailing boat of similar dimensions, but designed on purpose for Fountaine Pajot to attain certain performances and accommodation characteristics expected from a semi-displacement motor-powered yacht.

French naval architect Daniel Andrieu has therefore designed MY 44’s swift lines and blue hull with a structure fair above the waterline to suggest suitability for long cruises in full comfort thanks to impressive interior spaces. We entered the yacht via a large hydraulically operated aft platform hosting the tender, and reached the main deck in three steps, entering the aft cockpit salon with a sofa and a four-section foldable glass door that lead to the main interior salon.

On the port side, a semicircular staircase leads to the fly-bridge, and on starboard the U-layout galley doubles – when the door is closed, that is folded toward portside – as a fully equipped bar with electric cooking plates and an oven (a large fridge with freezer is installed on the opposite side).

In a spacious, very broad salon, there is a small sofa starboard and a large one to the port, serving the foldable dining table that can also be (with one push of a button) lowered to club height. The main salon, same as other spaces, is decorated in light wood and grey fabrics, and has white leather panelled ceilings. The console, located starboard just behind the windshield, is slightly raised to provide good visibility.

Extremely spacious catamaran for charter

Instruments are an exercise in modern technological minimalism – instead of analogue indicators and switches, there are only two Garmin multifunction displays. Both commanding posts, the main one and the one on the fly-bridge, are equipped with classic steering wheels, electronic engine commands and joysticks to control Volvo IPS propulsion systems.

The entrance to the master suite is on the port side, opposite the galley: a few steps lead to the large space in the centre of the port hull, with a king-size bed facing the windows, while the private bathroom (with separate shower cabin) is located toward the bow.

For charter purposes, this extremely spacious area can be divided into two smaller guest cabins. In the owner’s version, two guest cabins are arranged inside the starboard side of the hull, with access behind the command post. In the VIP cabin, the bed is placed diagonally and the head is astern.

Another small cabin is built in the area between the two hulls; its head, accessible from the salon, serves as the day facility. All corridors and gangways are broad enough for two persons to pass each other. Two sofas with adjustable backs welcome sun worshippers on the foredeck. The designers have correctly assumed that guests will want to spend most of their time during the day on the fly-bridge.

In its aft section, there’s a large teak dining table, adjacent bar, refrigerator and sink adjacent, while a spacious sundeck and another command post visually and ergonomically equal to the interior one are on the bow.

The entire fly-bridge is protected by a hard top with foldable sections to spread over the sunbathing area and the helm station. The Fountaine Pajot MY 44 has met our expectations at sea, on rather rough waves that welcomed us on the day of the test.

MY 44 fuel consumption

The unit we tested, powered by two Volvo Penta D6-435D-F (435 HP each), reached the 9-knot cruising speed at 2.000 rpm and with 40 l/h consumption (for both engines). Those who prefer greater speed can select to sail at 15 knots (2.700 rpm and 81 l/h), while the top speed of the yacht is 22 knots at 3.300 rpm.

Decent off-shore performances and safety, as well as supreme seaworthiness, is what most buyers demand, and with this yacht it’s what they can expect, in addition to immaculate manoeuvring abilities in busy ports (even in windy conditions) thanks to the joystick-controlled Volvo IPS. Stylish and elegant, MY 44 catamaran is very efficiently putting its foot in the market door – and keeping them open for her successors – also proving to be a solid investment. We are sure it won’t be long before Fountaine Pajot MY 44 is a common sight in many a port.
