This fun and educational course is an introduction to powerboating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling skills and the use of safety equipment typically found on board. These courses run at both our training centres in Kinlochleven in the Highlands and at our Greenock training centre near Glasgow. The RYA Powerboat Level 1 course is great for children, young persons and adults who want to learn how to use these vessels, which allows them to have an understanding of safety when afloat. If you are a family intending to go afloat, this ensures your younger and older crew members understand the principles of powerboating. The course is essentially practical based meaning you get as much time on the water as possible and with only a maximum of 3 people on the course, a good amount of that time will be behind the wheel. When you are not helming, you’ll be an active crew member. The team of instructors are chosen for their superior knowledge, teaching style, and sense of humour. The courses run all year, but we suggest between April - October as being the best time to get afloat when new to boating. Our training centres have sheltered waters to practice in, so even if the weather forecast is not looking great, we can still get you afloat to have a great day. Course Fee: £199About this course.. This is powerboat training in Scotland’s most southerly point as you head out into the seas off the coast of Dumfries & Galloway. It’s a thoroughly stunning setting for your powerboat course. The RIB boat you’ll be using for training is moored up at the Isle of Whithorn harbour which despite it’s name is actually on the Scottish mainland. Your instructor and host for the full day course is Miles who is a highly qualified outdoor activities guide who loves this part of the world. We have to say it’s hard not to get totally immersed in the glorious setting you’re in but you’re here to learn how to pilot the RIB so it’s time to get power boating! Your training follows the RYA Powerboating Level 1 syllabus which aims to give ‘A practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats’. Throughout your day on the water you’ll practice things like ‘coming alongside’ to moor the boat ‘holding station’ and practicing ‘man overboard’ procedures (don’t worry non-one will be falling in the water). You’ll also get plenty of time to try out fast and slow speed manoeuvres so you can feel the wind blowing in your face. Totally unique to this powerboat training course in Scotland is the chance to include one nights’ accommodation in Cornmill; Miles and Katie’s bed and breakfast. This original 1850s corn mill (complete with mill wheel) is situated just a few miles north of the Isle of Whithorn at Garlieston a sleepy coastal village with the incredible sunsets and vistas that only the west of Scotland can do. You’ll be welcomed on a bed breakfast and evening dinner basis with even a packed lunch provided for you for your day of training. As your hosts will tell you: ‘Time passes slowly here. Garlieston is the quietest of the old Scottish fishing villages.’ But not so quiet that there isn’t a lovely traditional pub for you to celebrate getting your certificate for your level 1 RYA course in Scotland with a wee dram!
