Kate & Malcolm – Five Knots Wedding

Five knots wedding photos | tamaki yacht club wedding photos | bastion point wedding photos.

bastion point wedding photo

Kate & Malcolm

One of my favourite spots to catch the city skyline has to be Bastion Point, so you can probably imagine how excited I was when Kate and Malcolm planned to have their creative photos there! Early on I headed over to Kate’s home just off Mission Bay and photographed her getting ready, then went over to Five Knots at the Tamaki Yacht Club where both the ceremony and reception were to take place.

We had so much fun shooting the creative photos, and for the second part of the shoot we paid a visit to a cool spot that I found a few days back! At the reception, we were treated to speeches with lots of humour and a big dance party to end the night. As always when I saw the sunset I couldn’t resist sneaking us out for some epic shots in the magical golden light.

Thank you for having me at your big day Kate and Malcolm!

I hope you enjoy the following sneak peek and as always do leave a comment at the bottom of the page.

“Wow, where do you start when you have got so many amazing comments to give one person!? The first day I met up with Lionel I really couldn’t give him a lot of information as my emotions from struggling to find a photographer got the better of me (it was only 4 and a half weeks till our wedding!!!). We couldn’t have asked for anyone better to capture the special moments of the start of our new life together. With not a lot to work with Lionel gave us the best wedding album a bride could ever ask for, he went well out of his way to make every photo and every little detail perfect. Thank you Lionel for all the work and effort that went into our photos, we truly are very lucky.”

– Zandrie & Dean

rawhiti bay of islands wedding photo

“Lionel was amazing, from our first meeting until the big day he was on hand to answer any queries.

What first struck us about Lionel was his genuineness. He was sincere and extremely easy to get along with. Taking a real interest in us and our story.

On the big day Lionel was outstanding. He had asked us how we would like the day to go which for us was unobtrusive but there to capture all the movements of the day. Lionel worked tirelessly and he stayed way into the night. His pictures are fantastic and we couldn’t be happier with what he did for us!!

Thank you Lionel for helping to capture our perfect day.”

– Rachel & Heath

auckland windross house wedding photo

“A simply amazing photographer with such attention to detail and constantly looking for clever ways to enhance each photo. We began dealing with Lionel a year ago, he was prompt coming back to us to confirm availability for our chosen day and from that point on was so friendly and accommodating. He was awesome on the day and clearly knew what he was doing (we’d never done a photo shoot before so we needed direction lol!) he was amazing with our guests (book him and see for yourself!) and today we received our sneak peeks – couldn’t be happier with his work, the photos brought a few tears to the eyes as I relived some of the moments and there were moments I didn’t know he captured. Pleasure working with you!!! If I do it all again, I know who I’ll ask!!”

– Beverley & Jason

sapphire room ponsonby wedding photo

“Lionel shot both our engagement shoot and our wonderful wedding day. We were both quite nervous about having our wedding photos done so he suggested having the engagement shoot, I’m so glad we did it. It was good to have the practice and to know what to expect. Lionel put us at ease.

Lionel was present for our wedding from very early morning up until it was dark and no more photos could be done. He captured the essence of the day, many friends and family have commented that our photos show how much we love one another! He got some great shots with our very active young son too, which I was extremely excited about. We also received so many photos to choose from and look back on.

Thank you again Lionel!”

– Elesha & Goran

“Our experience was an absolute blast! Lionel was extremely professional, but also very humble and easy to get along with. Not only did he show interest in what we wanted, he also gave great ideas and went out of his way to insure we were comfortable and at ease. The engagement photos turned out better than we could have ever expected and we cannot wait for our wedding day. Definitely a 10/10 from us!”

– Julianne & Mike

Visiting Russia - Nalchik, Capital of Kabardino-Balkaria

By Koryo Tours

Nalchik, capital of Kabardino-Balkaria

Visiting Russia – Nalchik

Yoshkar-ola | cheboksary  |  astrakhan | elista | stalingrad (volograd)  | abakan  |  nalchik  | validkavkaz  | makhachkala  |  grozny.

Nalchik is a small city of around 240,000 people and serves as the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, one of the lesser-known republics spread across the beautiful North Caucasus area of Russia, the mountain range that separates the former soviet states of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan from the Russian Federation.

This region has incredible diversity in ethnic groups and is a melting pot at the edge of empire. While there have been civilisations in the Caucasus for millennia Nalchik as a city is only a century old, having been a Russian fort since 1724. Today’s Nalchik is a mostly peaceful and relaxing place, being in the foothills of the mountains it has many areas of great beauty and multiple sanatoria for people looking to take the waters, over the last century it has certainly had its share of turbulence though, being occupied by Romanian troops fighting on the side of the Nazis, who embarked on an effort to exterminate the ancient community of Mountain Jews in the area (unsuccessfully), plus a 2005 Islamic militant attack on Russian security forces.

These days Nalchik is known as a clean city, a place for relaxing, and the starting point of expeditions to summit Mt. Elbrus, the tallest mountain in Europe, which lies within Kabardino-Balkaria.

Kabardians make up the largest ethnic group at just under 50% of the city’s population, followed by Russians, Balkars, other Caucasian nationalities as well as Ukrainians, Mountain Jews still live in the area but in very small numbers now, most having emigrated to Israel.

Nalchik Airport (NAL) is a small one but is fully functional for getting in and out, usually the foreigners arriving here will be mountaineers heading for Elbrus.

The Airport is only 3km from the city centre so you could even walk into town from here, otherwise, there are taxis and marshrutkas waiting for arrivals. Flights arrive only from Moscow and St. Petersburg usually, the Caucasus has other larger airports for other international flights (such as those to Sochi). Nalchik has a railway station, dating from 1915, with links to Moscow and across the Caucasus. A good option for travelling around the region in a relaxing manner (usually slower than taking a marshrutka between cities though) For getting around inside Nalchik there are public buses all over the place, easy to use and very cheap. Otherwise most of the centre is very walkable, the main ‘high street’ is Lenin Avenue, which runs for several km through the centre of the city.

Nalchik

Concord Square

The centre of Nalchik and a good place to start a walking tour of the city, with the Kabardino-Balkaria parliament building on one side and Lenin stands at the other, fountains in the middle and Lenin Avenue cutting through the square

Religious Buildings

The central buildings of the main religions practised in Nalchik are both fine examples of their respective architectural styles; the Central Mosque and the Cathedral of Mary Magdalene are both worth visiting. Dress codes apply.

Not actually in Nalchik, but only 50km or so away so the city is the ideal base for starting an expedition. This is Europe’s highest mountain and a dormant volcano. There are cable car/chairlift options to get t the top for those who don’t wish to do it the hard way. It is possible to get up and down this mountain n a single day, making it certainly the simplest of the 7 continental highest peaks to climb.

Museum of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic

Great for explaining where you are and the history of the area. Mostly in Russian only though and does tend to assume some knowledge in advance. Still a good stop to get some intro into the complex history of this city and area in general.

Atazhukin Garden

A large park complex running for more than 2km along the eastern side of the city, alongside the Nalchik River. A very pleasant place with so much to see and do. The basic Nalchik Zoo is here, walking trails, restaurants and cafes, theatres, a very retro funfair, and a rickety but reliable cable car running up to a lovely viewpoint to see over the city and out to Mt. Elbrus.

Topped by a restaurant building built in the shape of a Kabardian warrior. An excellent few hours can be spent exploring this park and mingling with the locals of all ages who do their relaxing here.

During Soviet times, Nalchik developed into a spa town, with many sanatoriums and artificial lakes and parks. The main avenue, Lenin Prospekt, is wide, friendly, boarded with bleached white buildings of 5-6 floors. Nalchik has largely escaped, possibly due to its touristic vocation, the Brezhnev era grey concrete buildings that are common in most other Russian cities.

As of the 2010 census, the population was 240,203 people, of which 42.3% were Kabardians (Adiga - muslims), 28.3% were Russians, 15.2% were Balkars (Taulu - a turkic speaking muslim population), and 13% were other ethnic groups.

Nalchik is named after the River Nalchik on the banks of which it is built. The word nalchik means "small horseshoe" in Kabardian language. It is possibly due to the shape of the mountain range surrounding the city / river.

[ ]

The region in and around Nalchik was inhabited early on by Kabarda and Balkar population groups.

In 1818, Russians created a fort at the location of present-day Nalchik along with settling Mountain Jews.

For nearly a century, Nalchik remained a backwater military garrison town. In 1921, 4 years after the October revolution, Nalchik was registered a city.

In 1942-1943, during World War II, the city was occupied by Nazi Germany and Romania and the population of Mountain Jews suffered as a result.

On October 13, 2005, a group of fighters took over the city, attacking the police and army headquarters. The city was finally assaulted by the russian special forces. Some 136 people died in the event.

[ ] [ ]

Nalchik Airport ( : ) is 3km northeast of the city. UTAir operates flights to/from and and Pobeda operates flights to/from Moscow.

Mineralnye Vody Airport ( : ) is 105km north of the city and offers many more flight options.

[ ]

A train operates daily between Nalchik and Moscow (34 hours, RUB2,700), with stops at cities including and .

[ ]

Buses operate regularly to/from cities in such as , as well as other cities including , Mineralnye Vody, (5 hours), and .

[ ]

Nalchik is easily explored on foot. Minibuses are also available.

[ ]

The city of Nalchik does not have that much to offer and is mostly used by tourists as a convenient base to explore the region and the North Caucasus.

Lenin Prospect is the main street.

[ ]

Central Park of Culture and Recreation includes many artificial lakes, an amusement park, and paddle-boat rental.

[ ]

A chair lift is available to the top of a hill to a restaurant with a nice view.

Take the gondolas / cabins to the top (2nd station). The snow-cat will take you right to the Elbrus base camp at 4200m.

[ ]

The Bezengi valley and Chegem valley are a 1 hour drive from Nalchik. The mountains there are not as high (more pre-alps type) but the sceneries and the flora are just as beautiful and you will not a meet any tourist (at least after you pass the chegem waterfalls).

Don't expect nicely marked paths. Just get yourself a good map in a bookstore. Alternatively simply drive to the valley and choose a path going sideways. The mountains are used for livestock rearing in the summer so that there are always plenty of shepherds and cowboys. You will find tracks made by the animals and paths. These may not always lead you to the summits but will get you to the passes.

In winter you can do snow-boot hiking. It is safer to stick to the Cheget / Elbrus area which is more populated in winter.

[ ]

In winter, you can ski at either Mount CHEGET or Mount ELBRUS, which are less than 10km from each other. Lifts are generally quite old and run down. Cheget is a more challenging ski resort than Elbrus. The snow tends to be better on Elbrus side, which has a higher altitude, and the trails are prepared at Elbrus. Both ski resorts have only 2-3 lifts.

In both places you will find rental equipment but you will have more choices in Cheget. A daily ski lift pass costs around RUB800.

If you intend to spend a night at the ski resort, sleep at Cheget. It is friendlier, hotels and restaurants are better, and has more of a resort-feel than Elbrus. Cheget has a few restaurants, a disco bar under the big ugly hotel Cheget, a small market with traditional products and an ice-ring.

[ ]

The kabarda (and balkar) are famous horse-riders. They have successfully bred their own type of horse "kabardin", which has achieved a certain fame. It is considered a very resistent, sturdy, hard working, small-sized horse. Locally, these horses are used for livestock rearing in the mountains. If you are a proficient rider, go to the hippodrome in Nalchik and directly rent a pure-breed competition horse. If you are less proficient or prefer to take a ride in the nature on a somewhat quieter animal, horses can be found in the winter months in the plain immediately around Nalchik in many farms; ask locals for advice. In the summer, the horses are typically brought in the mountains. A good bet is to try in the area past the Chegem waterfalls in the Chegem valley. Many of the farms will be willing to rent you a horse for half a day for RUB500.

[ ]

There are four large supermarkets.

[ ]

Shashlik (grilled brochette of meat) is commonly found at most cafes.
