The ECHO’s Everton reporter Chris Beesley covered the Blues Under-21s dramatic late 3-1 comeback win against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park as Paul Tait’s side trailed to Josh Davison’s 11th minute opener only to triumph thanks to a Beto brace (86, 90+2) before substitute Martin Sherif wrapped things up (90+5) with a close range effort just seconds before the final whistle. Here are three things we learned from Everton’s opening first round fixture in Northern Group A of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy in 2024/25.

Beto late than never

It took him a long time but Beto finally beasted Tranmere’s defenders to show his class in the latter stages of the match and having removed his shirt as the players left the field, gave a victorious bicep flex towards the Evertonians among the crowd who were saluting his efforts. Some 10 days shy of a year before this fixture, the Portuguese striker made his Everton debut against another League Two side, Doncaster Rovers – who the Blues face at Goodison Park in the same stage of the competition next Tuesday – in a Carabao Cup second round tie, a mere 24 hours after completing his £25.75million transfer from Udinese.

Like at the Eco-Power Stadium in South Yorkshire where he was introduced as a half-time substitute, Beto inspired his side to a come-from-behind success – something they’ve still never managed under Sean Dyche in the Premier League – but here it took even longer to turn things around. You’d have hoped that such an expensive acquisition, vying for a starting spot in the Premier League would have bossed this level of opponent from the start but in truth it was something of a slog until the latter stages.

Beto’s pace and power were obvious but with some of the service coming his way a bit wayward, a clutch of chances went begging before he came up trumps. Perhaps it’s the benefits of the fitness levels achieved by a full Dyche pre-season and supposedly two ‘Gaffer’s Days’ this summer but the 26-year-old had the stamina to produce a spectacular ‘sprint finish’ to the game.

Subtly isn’t something obviously in the Beto locker but a deft touch to latch on to a threaded through-ball from captain Jenson Metcalfe finally beat goalkeeper Joe Murphy who had been Tranmere’s saviour up until that point. If that was the silk then next came the steel as with a penalty shoot-out looming, the striker who saw his effort saved by Alphonse Areola when Everton were finally awarded their first spot-kick of last season in their 27th Premier League game at home to West Ham United, smashed in a powerful close range effort from an angle.

Indeed, with mere moments remaining Beto came within inches of a hat-trick when he outmuscled a clutch of Rovers defenders before dinking another delicate shot towards goal only for Sherif to make sure by following the ball in and hooking it over the line. Evertonians are still smarting from another 3-0 Goodison Park reversal against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday but in this other Merseyside Derby, Tranmere fans still celebrate ‘St Yates’ Day’ every January 27 to commemorate when their defender’s brace helped inspire an FA Cup success over the Blues by the same scoreline in 2001 and although August 20 seems unlikely to be toasted as ‘St Beto’s Day’ in years to come, it proved a fruitful evening for a spirited big money signing determined to silence the critics.

Lindstrom picking up the pace

Jesper Lindstrom, another Everton acquisition from Italy’s Serie A, didn’t enjoy quite as spectacular evening as Beto but as the on-loan Napoli winger continues to find his feet in English football, there were again some moments of encouragement. After introducing himself to the Blues in fine fashion on his debut, sealing a 3-0 friendly win at Preston North End with a perfectly struck free kick, the Danish international is still getting to grips with the pace of the game on these shores.

This correspondent has it on good authority from colleague Joe Thomas no less that having interviewed the 24-year-old at Deepdale after that game, Lindstrom is a lovely, humble man and he looked at ease posing for selfies with spectators before kick-off at Prenton Park. Once the action started, several of Tranmere’s players were not as welcoming as they seemingly relished the prospect of taking a big name opponent down a peg or two.

Big Cameron Norman, a summer recruit from Rovers who is a burly Norwich-born defender, looked every inch the Norfolk rustic as he tried to rough up Lindstrom with some agricultural challenges but whether deployed on the right or left flank – he started and finished on the former with a spell on the latter early in the second half – the Everton man looked unfazed. Set pieces are part of his armoury but while one corner kick went back out of play, Murphy was forced to tip a 20-yard free kick over the bar before Lindstrom crucially set up Beto’s second goal to put the visitors ahead with a purposeful dribble before picking out the striker with a delightfully weighted pass.

Dixon does well in the spotlight

Some Evertonians were already clamouring for Roman Dixon to be given a go at right-back for the first game of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion and following the 3-0 defeat that saw Ashley Young – the oldest outfield player in Blues history – sent off and now suspended, the shouts are getting increasingly louder ahead of the trip to Tottenham Hotspur. Dyche – who was in the stand watching here until 10 minutes from the end before departing with goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer and leaving assistant manager Ian Woan to take in the latter stages – claims that Seamus Coleman , Nathan Patterson and James Garner , all alternative options at right-back are unlikely to win their respective fitness battles to be available in north London which leaves something of a conundrum for the Blues boss.

While ECHO columnist Michael Ball believes there’s nothing to lose from throwing Dixon in at the deep end, Joe Thomas has cautioned against the bold call . Here, the Staffordshire-born prospect, who turns 20 on Boxing Day, produced an encouraging display.

Like a young Coleman, he’s certainly got a capacity for bursting forward into space and making lung-busting runs and while there’s still plenty of scope for improvement, he can also put a cross in. What was notable though at a venue where Dave Challinor forged a fearsome reputation in the field, is that Dixon also possesses a long throw-in which looks like a potent weapon, although plastic shelters on the touchline by the Main Stand prevented him getting the kind of leverage that the Tranmere old boy used to enjoy when he was backing up into the hoardings and getting ball boys to hand him towels to improve his grip.
