Discover the best boat hotels in London with this handy guide. Here’s our pick of the best.

With the Thames running through London, along with a plethora of canals and marinas in the city, having a break on a boat hotel (or boatel?) is easier than you think.

From mega millionaire yachts to boutique barges, this is your one-stop shop for finding the best floating hotels in London.

Best London Boat Hotels: At a Glance

Best Boat Hotels in London

Good Hotel London

The Good Hotel sits in the Royal Victoria Dock area of London’s Docklands. We love that this is a hotel with a social conscience – the not-for-profit basis of the hotel sees all profits reinvested to help underprivileged people, from sending children to school to offering adults the chance to retrain in hospitality.

Rooms at this hotel are designed to maximise space in the most stylish of ways. Utilising Dutch design, the ensuite bathrooms have outstanding rain showers and locally-sourced toiletries.

And best of all? Each night you stay, a disadvantaged child can go to school for a week.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel

£££

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel

Moored in Royal Victoria Dock, in the heart of East London’s affluent Docklands area, the Sunborn Hotel is a minute’s walk from ExCeL London. This superyacht is highly luxurious, with crystal chandeliers, an opulent lobby, stunning dining areas and much more.

There is a sun deck where you can take drinks and sit back to soak up the rays, with the bar selling a terrific selection of beers, wines and spirits. Meanwhile, their breakfast buffet comes highly rated.

The best part of the Sunborn Yacht is unquestionably the accommodation. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, air conditioning and an excellent power shower, while some rooms even boast stunning views across the Royal Docks.

The Boathouse

The Boathouse

The Boathouse is a wood-panelled houseboat moored in the Paddington Basin, where the Regent’s Canal meets the Grand Union. Not too far from Little Venice , and with all the charming waterside bars, restaurants and beauty of the Paddington Basin, this is one of London’s premier floating holiday accommodations.

Although we’d recommend this boat for romantic breaks, there’s space for up to four people. Guests can use the whole boat, including a gorgeous bathroom with a bath and shower space.

The living quarters are super comfortable, and the kitchen is well-equipped. Best of all, the rooftop deck from which you can marvel at a beautiful London sunset for those summer months.

St Katharine Docks 2Boats

St Katherine Docks 2Boats

St Katharine Docks in Wapping is home to Sea Dancer, a yacht that sleeps four and includes a microwave, hot drink-making tools and a fridge for the whole self-catering waterborne experience.

On the boat is a work desk, a stove, flat-screen TV and even an outdoor dining area, step foot on land and you’ll be greeted by plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes to choose from.

Absolute Pleasure Yacht

Absolute Pleasure Yacht

Moored in West India Quay, the Absolute Pleasure Yacht gives guests a taste of the millionaire yacht-living lifestyle at a fraction of the price. Although it’s primarily a function space that hosts corporate and private parties, you can also hire the yacht for a break, which includes everything you’d expect from a top-draw London hotel.

Ten luxury bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs and luxe linen. Bottled water, toiletries and bathrobes are all included, while the yacht is moored close to a range of stunning bars, restaurants and a cool pop-up food market on Thursdays and Fridays.

Boutique Barges

Boutique Barges

Boutique Barges have three narrow boats moored on the Thames, offering holidaymakers and visitors to London an authentic riverside experience.

Barbara is a stunning boat with a log-fired stove and bathroom complete with a shower, as well as a small double master bedroom, and is situated in Central London.

Meanwhile, Big Boat is more comprehensive but shorter than Barbara and comes with a raised master double bed that we love, making it the perfect accommodation for a romantic couple’s break. Outside is space for a fire pit and a couple of deckchairs, ideal for watching the sun go down with a glass of bubbly.

Finally, Velvet Morning is another narrow boat that has been gorgeously designed and is moored in Central London. We’d say this was our favourite, thanks to the crisp and stylish decor.

Tulana Taggs

Tulana Taggs

This floating holiday home is one of our favourites. Mainly because it offers something a little bit different to the others we’ve mentioned.

Situated in the inner lagoon of Taggs Island near Hampton Court Palace and Bushy Park is a stunning oasis of calm where you can leave the stresses and strains of the 21st Century behind you.

Cross the bridge onto Taggs Island and enjoy this stunning floating home amongst the reeds of the lagoon. Tulana Taggs combines gorgeous Art Deco and period furnishings with the mod cons of a Sky Glass Smart TV, a four-poster Super King bed, a freestanding nickel bath and for a little extra, a Swedish wood-fired hot tub – just a stunning floating holiday home experience.

Practical Tips to Consider Before Booking Your London Yacht Hotel

  • These boat hotels are dotted around London, many of which have limited parking. Check before you book whether you need to travel to the boat via public transport or whether you can park at the hotel.
  • If you’re staying on a houseboat, check the house rules before you visit to ensure you know what is expected of you as guests.

The Luxe Review

All aboard this luxury superyacht hotel in London, open for you to stay right now

Our plans to sail the French Riviera for the summer may have been somewhat derailed this year. But thankfully, it turns out we can live out our superyacht dreams closer to home – and we can book in to stay, right now.

The luxury Sunborn Yacht Hotel, London is a floating hotel – so it’s also the perfect option for those who would rather avoid any choppy waters. Seasickness is so passé.

yacht in london to stay

Moored at the Royal Victoria Docks, by the ExCel centre, the Sunborn London Yacht Hotel is the city’s only superyacht hotel, and one of the most unique luxury experiences in London. The yacht hotel had its grand reopening this weekend, as the UK hospitality industry opens back up.

Each room and suite of the 136-room floating hotel boasts beautiful river or dock views, while the plush Yacht Executive Rooms have their own private terrace or balcony, too. Every room is stocked with high-end Prija toiletries, and offers a new in-room dining experience, with an extended menu, Grab & Go wrapped breakfast items and snacks – all ordered through the rooms’ tablet.

yacht in london to stay

Along with the stays at the hotel beginning again, comes the reopening of the yacht’s gorgeous Sundown bar: arguably the most elegant place in Canary Wharf to enjoy an aperitif. The third-deck dining venue offers panoramic views across the water, exclusive wines and spirits from high-end distilleries, and a sumptuous menu of bar bites, too. Guests must pre-book their place in order to regulate numbers, while seating at the restaurant and bar have been adjusted to safely social distance, too.

yacht in london to stay

The hotel’s Land’s End restaurant is also back open for bookings. The high-end restaurant promises to take your tastebuds on a ‘voyage of discovery’ with a refined menu of European and Asian fusion, a sumptuous setting and enviable views.

For its reopening, the hotel has had a deep, hospital grade sanitisation of all rooms and public spaces. It’s had months to learn and perfect its safety measures: during lockdown, rather than closing its doors, the hotel acted as a place for NHS staff at the nearby Nightingale Hospital to stay, and served breakfast and dinner in the yacht’s Land’s End restaurant.

yacht in london to stay

More of the new precautions on board to protect guest and staff wellbeing are a digital system for checking in and out, protective screens on reception and sanitiser stations every 2 metres.

We thought we wouldn’t be back on the water for a while – but a luxury superyacht break in the capital has sailed to number one in our staycation wishlist.

Sunborn London offers nightly rates from £109 In a Classic Room. Booking details at sunbornhotels.com/london

A night on the water at the Sunborn Yacht hotel in London

London's floating hotel in royal victoria dock is a unique place to stay.

Sunborn Yacht hotel London

A stay at the Sunborn Yacht – London’s boat hotel

Spending a night at the Sunborn Yacht hotel in London was a rather pleasant if surreal experience, not least because I saw the hotel first from high up in the sky – not a usual occurrence! This floating hotel is located at Royal Victoria Dock in East London which is just a short walk from the cable car which crosses the Thames from North Greenwich. This means you can easily see the gleaming white yacht which is the Sunborn hotel from 90 metres up in the air, along with the sparkling water and the nearby London City Airport.

We had decided to arrive like tourists, so rather than getting the DLR or Elizabeth Line to Customs House station, which is just a few minutes walk from the Sunborn, we instead caught the river bus with Uber Boat by Thames Clippers from the Embankment to North Greenwich.

The hour-long cruise sailed past iconic London sights such as Tower Bridge, the Tower of London and HMS Belfast while we enjoyed a civilised drink along with the views, chatting to friendly travellers on the boat, far more pleasant than a tube journey underground.

From North Greenwich, home to the O2, we took the cable car – officially called the IFS Cloud Cable Car – over the Thames to Royal Victoria Dock, where the Sunborn Yacht hotel is located. Both journeys were unexpectedly delightful and total novelties to me, a long-time London resident; why should tourists get to do all the fun things?

Arriving at Sunborn London

From the cable car stop it was just a short walk along the riverside to the Sunborn, which we had already spotted from our lofty vantage point, and it certainly looks impressive from any angle. Rather than being converted from a previous life sailing the Mediterranean, as I had imagined, the Sunborn London was constructed specially for its London mooring, and is the closest hotel to ExCeL , the vast conference centre and exhibition hall which is just a few metres away.

ExCeL conference and exhibition centre

The ExCeL conference and exhibition centre is just a few steps – literally – from the entrance to the Sunborn Yacht hotel London

Sunborn Yacht hotel London

The entrance to the Sunborn Yacht hotel London

Talking of metres – the Sunborn London has around 10,000m2 of floorspace, which means it feels pretty roomy inside, with 138 bedrooms and suites over five floors, plus a bar, restaurant, conference facilities and several terraces for those sunny days and warm evenings.

There is a sister hotel, the five-star Sunborn Gibraltar , which seems to be rather more luxurious, with a swimming pool and casino onboard, but I am told there are plans for the Sunborn London to find another spot in London and for a larger Sunborn to moor up here instead.

The impressive reception lobby at Sunborn Yacht hotel London

That is all some way in the future, though, with plans yet to be finalised, and for now the Sunborn London remains London’s only yacht hotel, and it certainly offers a unique place to spend the night. The entrance is certainly a good first impression, with a lift from the quayside opening out onto an impressive double spiral staircase, all gleaming glass and gold. Check in was quick and efficient, and before too long we were walking up the staircase to the 4th floor where our Yacht Executive Room with River View was located.

Bedrooms at Sunborn Yacht hotel

The 138 bedrooms at Sunborn London  start at Yacht Classic, then go up in size and facilities to Yacht Executive and then to the Suites. Our Yacht Executive, was fairly smart, with a large double bed, sofa, TV (which wasn’t very easy to watch from the bed), coffee table, writing desk and lots of mirrors, lights and plug points.

Our Yacht Executive room at Sunborn London was spacious and well-designed, with a large bed, sofa, desk, bathroom with shower and private balcony

The carpet was a little tired but the small ferry-style bathroom with shower was bright and clean and best of all, we had a small balcony with a view up and down the dock.

The bed was comfy and there were enough lights and powerpoints for all

For sitting outside and soaking up the views though, the best option is the terrace on the third floor at the back of the ship which gives great views down to the cable cab and beyond it, the O2 arena at Greenwich. Staff were efficient and helpful, serving us a beer and Bloody Mary cocktail, but be warned, the prices on the Sunborn are pretty steep – a glass of Prosecco will set you back £9 while a pint of lager is £7.50, cocktails are around £18 and a G&T will cost you £20.

A more sensible option is to check out some of the nearby bars and restaurants on dry land, such as The Fox – popular during ExCeL events – or even get a cheap bottle of fizz from the nearby Tesco and enjoy on your balcony, as paying £50 for two rounds of drinks seems a little excessive, even for central London prices, and we certainly weren’t in central London. There’s also a selection of bar snacks, such as whitebait, £9.50, or larger plates like fish and chips at £22, but we had reserved a table at the Sunborn’s Land’s End restaurant and decided to wait.

Dinner at Sunborn Yacht

Dinner on the Sunborn is served on the fourth floor, in the open-plan Land’s End restaurant, and guests are advised to book as it can get busy. Staff kindly let us switch from our initial table under some over-enthusiastic air-conditioning to a warmer one and it was nice to dine while seeing the views of the water outside.

Sadly, the food didn’t match the venue or its prices, which was a shame considering the unique location. The Sunborn itself doesn’t shy away from making extravagant claims about its restaurant, as its website proclaims: ‘In our beautiful and elegant restaurant, you’ll find an array of striking and memorable flavours, an inspiring range of local and seasonal ingredients, and menus and wine lists specifically curated to take you to new heights of sensory pleasure…To dine on board Sunborn’s luxury superyacht is to go on a voyage into a realm of flavour, aroma, and texture, and to treat yourself to something truly out of the ordinary.’

Sweetcorn chowder

We hadn’t read this blurb before dining but even so, the prices and venue meant that we had been really looking forward to something special. The starters were perfectly adequate, with Pressed Rabbit and Parma Ham Terrine (£15) and my large, warming bowl of Sweetcorn Chowder (£9.50) but the mains weren’t up to expectations; my seared Tuna Steak Nicoise (£34) was very odd, with the tuna having been seemingly brined or treated in some way that it tasted more like gammon, with oddly sliced eggs and an over-powering balsamic dressing, while my partner’s vast Lobster Tagliatelle (£32) was slightly better, but needed more flavour and more lobster. We decided to take one dessert to our room (Vanilla Creme Brûlée, £12) and were surprised to find it was really rather tiny.

It was a shame as dining on a boat certainly felt very special and the prices certainly hinted that the food would be a cut above the usual fare, but reluctantly I have to say I didn’t feel it matched the venue or the cost. ‘There’s something for everyone in the UK’s most exclusive and one of a kind venue’ says the website, so it does seem like a severe case of over-writing and under-delivering, at least on the evening we were there. The glass of red wine we had with our meal was very nice though and the Pina colada-style cocktail which came in a giant glass pineapple glass was fun and showed a bit of imagination and verve.

Breakfast at Sunborn

Judging by the reviews on Tripadvisor breakfast at Sunborn yacht hotel, the breakfast is a hugely popular part of guests’ stay, but I think they were having an off-day when I visited (or maybe my expectations were too high?). Breakfast is buffet-only, so you help yourself from a variety of cooked options on hot plates, which range from sausages to bacon, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, baked beans and hash browns as well as a selection of cold meats, yoghurt, smoked fish, cereals and bread.

The yogurt was fine but the scrambled eggs were cold (even from the tray freshly brought from the kitchen), the sausages not very tasty and the bacon very patchily cooked, so for a hotel which claims to offer a ‘five-star, luxury experience’ I found it rather lacking – plus the coffee available was only filter coffee and staff were not very pleased with my request for a proper espresso – although they did oblige in the end. It is always tricky for a hotel to manage expectations but as breakfast is a highlight of most hotel stays, it surely isn’t too hard to make sure that food is well cooked and piping hot when served.

The lounge at the Sunborn Yacht hotel London

The lounge at the Sunborn Yacht hotel London

That said, staying at the Sunborn yacht hotel was certainly a unique London hotel experience and if you’re visiting ExCeL then it is the ideal place for location and convenience, plus sitting on the terrace in the sunshine next to the sparkling water of Royal Victoria Dock was a lovely way to spend the afternoon – I look forward to the arrival of Sunborn’s more luxurious replacement which will no doubt be a great addition to the area, whether you choose to travel by land, sea or air.

Large superyachts visiting London, England on the river Thames are an exciting spectacle, but also a fantastic base to access events and the central parts of the city, making London a very interesting yacht charter prospect. There are also luxury yacht marinas and berths available with more currently being developed.

On such marina is the historic St Katharine Docks in central London which has berthage for 200 luxury yachts and historic barges. A haven of tranquillity and nestled in the heart of the City of London, St Katharine’s is directly adjacent to the iconic Tower Bridge and next to the Tower of London. The marina is home to visiting and local superyachts and also provides space for private and corporate events amongst the associated commercial buildings.

St Katharine Docks has a thousand years of dramatic history to its name, making it one of the most interesting marina histories in the world.  King Edgar originally gifted 13 acres of land to 13 knights in 1125for trade. St Katharine’s docks have been used ever since throughout the ages for one purpose or another and then in 1825 construction began on the docks, laying down the framework for what you see today.

When visiting the UK with London on the itinerary, yachts also dock in the city of Southampton in south-west England. Many vessels drop anchor at Ocean Village Marina or Hamble Point Marina. Expect a coach or train journey time of around 1 hour 20 minutes from Southampton into South London.

London, the UK’s exciting capital city attracts visitors from around the world. Go shopping in Oxford Street, Regent Street as well as famous department stores like Harrods, Harvey Nichols or Selfridges. How about a night out at the theatre? Watch a play, musical, drama or ballet at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, the London Palladium or the Old Vic. There are many places to visit in London. It’s such a diverse city with some of the world’s best sights, attractions and activities.

See the city from above on the London Eye, meet a celeb at Madame Tussaud’s or examine the treasures at the British Museum. Sightseeing couldn’t be better. Check out the underwater creatures at Sea Life London or marvel at the strange objects in the Science Museum. There really is something for everyone in London and plenty to do to make up a luxury yacht charter itinerary.

Buy a day ticket for a London, red double-decker bus on-off tour. What a great vantage point to catch fantastic views of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, St. Paul’s Cathedral and of course, Buckingham Palace. You’ll get a birds-eye view of London Bridge, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey and the Changing of the Guard. Spend an afternoon at London Zoo, home to more than 16,000 animals like tigers, hippos, and giraffes.

A little outside London is Kensington Palace, an intriguing Royal Palace that also houses an exhibition of Princess Diana’s dresses. Find out where Queen Victoria lived as a child and see the wonderful collection of paintings from the Royal Collection. To keep you in holiday mode, take a river cruise down the River Thames. Relax and enjoy the magnificent views as you sail past Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Cleopatra’s Needle, The Shard and the London Eye Pier. After so much excitement, it’s back to your superyacht in Southampton for the next part of your voyage.

London city guide: Where to stay and what to do

One of the best city break destinations in the world, London has an abundance to offer by way of culture, gastronomy, retail therapy and more. Now that hotels are re-opening on May 17, it's time to get back to exploring so we've put together a handy guide to help you make the most of your time in the big smoke.

Where to stay in London

Being one of the central hubs of the world, London is well equipped when it comes to hotels, from the super-luxurious to the quaint, quintessentially British bolt holes. We've rounded up our favourites that will guarantee a great stay in the city.

Arrive at this grand Edwardian hotel in Dickensian Holborn in central London (he wrote Great Expectations while living in the area) in style and safety – if you are a member of Knightsbridge Circle concierge service , your personal manager will arrange an immaculate Mercedes S400 to collect you from dock, airport or doorstep and whisk you off the busy streets and through the wrought iron gates of the central carriageway entrance to the sanctuary of the inner courtyard. Your manager, who will be there to greet you, will have already checked you in and made any reservations you require, so you can have more time enjoying the champagne drawer in the bar in your 85-square-metre Grand Premier Suite, treatments in the Sense spa, or dinner downstairs in the Holborn Dining Room.

Before dinner, descend the Renaissance-style grand marble staircase to the Scottish-themed Macallan Manor House bar, just off the peaceful courtyard – it has heated seats, meaning you can meet a friend whatever the weather for a warming whiskey-based cocktail in comfort. Despite the Scottish theme (staff are in tartan) plenty of other drinks are available, and we recommend the Domaine Vaurouz chablis – accompanied by (what else?) a rare breed pork and white pudding Scotch egg.

For a quintessentially British stay, there is nowhere like The Stafford in London. Steeped in history and frequented by everyone from the Royal Family to Winston Churchill and a number of super famous faces in between. It's not surprising to see why this hidden gem is a popular spot, tucked away behind the clamour of Piccadilly with private suites that are like private apartments, fully equipped with fireplaces and grand bathrooms.

If stately grandeur is what you seek, the Stafford will give you an authentic taste of British culture, especially if you dine in the Game Bird and enjoy the Wellington dish of the day- a signature of theirs. Follow this with a dose of American culture by visiting the famous American bar for tasty cocktails beneath the fraternity memorabilia.

Take your travel to new heights by booking a suite at the opulent Shangri-La in London. Located in one of London's great landmarks, The Shard. Accessed via a private lift, you'll have sweeping views overlooking the Thames, with a skyline that stretches for miles from a comfortable and luxurious suite with floor-to-ceiling windows.

While you're here, a sunrise (or sunset) swim in Europe's highest infinity pool is a must, particularly if the sky is clear as there are not many times you'll be able to swim with such a fantastic backdrop. You're spoilt for choice when it comes to dining options, we'd recommend sundowners at Gong bar or dinner at Ting, a hot-spot for wedding proposals and special events.

Located on the historic Park Lane, The Dorchester is an age-old institution that's become equally as revered for its hotel suites as it's famous afternoon tea. Just a stone's throw from Hyde Park, where walks around the Serpentine will help clear your head, and a five-minute walk from the lavish streets of Mayfair should you be so inclined to go shopping.

The suites here will win you over with the opulent Italian marble bathrooms, plush beds and tall, dressed windows. Be sure to carve out time in the quaint tea rooms for jam and scones.

The Marylebone is perfectly located for visitors wanting easy access to London’s best attractions without finding themselves completely enveloped in the hustle and bustle. This hotel, sandwiched between the Victorian mansion blocks and manicured gardens of Marylebone, offers a quiet place to rest one's head that’s still within walking distance of the city's best restaurants, museums and shopping streets. Eclectic art-deco interiors throughout the restaurant, bar and bedrooms imbue the establishment with a stylish air, and an ultra-attentive concierge and staff will make you feel right at home.

Guests will enjoy views over the skyline from their well-appointed, modern suites, and will find a gym, swimming pool and restaurant at their disposal. Take your dinner at 108 Brasserie and finish off the night with a tipple at the ever-so elegant bar.

The Best Bars and Restaurants in London

Afternoon tea and Sunday lunch- two things the Brits do so well and essential to have on your agenda when visiting. There is a buzzing nightlife and a gastronomical scene in the city that draws people back time and time again. In addition to the suggestions below, read our roundup of the best afternoon tea and the best restaurants in London .

Dukes Bar is a must for every James Bond fan as it's the home of the original "shaken, not stirred" martini, which was also recreated in the recent Hollywood hit, A Simple Favour. We'd go as far as to say it would be criminal not to have one here...

For an experiential dining experience that offers the best views over West London, Galvin at Windows knows how to put on a fantastic meal to compete with the skyline. Situated on the 28th floor of the London Hilton on Park Lane, views overlook the famous Hyde Park and some of London's oldest architecture.

With Marc Hardiman at the helm, the signature dish of marbled duck liver is exemplary, not to mention the Portland crab and Anjou pigeon. Each dish alone is reason to make this restaurant a necessary stop when in London.

Hide quickly made a reputation for itself as one of London's more iconic restaurants with its grand wooden staircase and views of Green Park.

Ollie Dabbous' iconic nest egg and the truffled scrambled eggs (if you go for breakfast) have made waves on social media, drawing people in from all over. If you're there for dinner, be sure to save room for the gargantuan cheese trolley and definitely opt for the wine pairing.

Famed for its exceptional brunch offering, The Wolseley’ s distinguished dining room offers classic, British grandeur. Nestled between the Ritz, Fortnum & Mason and a two-minute walk from Green Park, it's a great stop-over should you be sightseeing or shopping nearby.

The restaurant serves probably the best Eggs Benedict in town- pair it with a decadent hot drink such as an Affogato (espresso poured over vanilla ice cream) or a Mozart (coffee with hazelnut liqueur, hot chocolate, crème chantilly and almond flakes).

A sister restaurant to Asian fine dining instituion Hakkasan, Yauatcha specialises in creating delectable Cantonese Dim Sum with creative, modern twists. Expect to eat your fill of flavoursome dumplings and delicate, artfully crafted pasteries.

Menu highlights include the truffle-infused seafood dumplings and steamed buns filled with soft shell crab. Save space for dessert too; with macaroons and mooncakes to satisfy your sweet tooth.

What to do in London

There are few cities in the world that have such a longstanding history and as many age-old landmarks in one place, like London. As one of the last countries with a royal family, the royal households are hot tourist spots - you can't miss out on the classic pictures with the guards - but can you make them smile? The usual tour of Buckingham Palace , Pall Mall, London Bridge and the Tower of London should be on everyone's to-do list and if you’ve got children in tow, then be sure to book the London Dungeons .

If you’re missing the water, take a private limo cruise down the Thames, or enjoy a picnic in Hyde Park and take some boats out on the Serpentine. Casual lunch at the renowned Borough Market before enjoying a stroll along the Southbank or drinks at London's Sky Garden .

Sometimes a good dose of culture is just the tonic. For this, explore the West End or book a play at Shakespeare's Globe theatre. Additionally, The Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery will whet your appetite with phenomenal artworks from around the world.

Here's what to know about Mike Lynch, the tech tycoon missing in the Sicily yacht disaster

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: August 21, 2024 / 12:05 PM EDT / CBS News

Mike Lynch, once hailed as "Britain's Bill Gates," is now among the six people missing after his luxury yacht sank in a violent storm off the coast of Sicily. At the time of the disaster, Lynch had been trying to shake more than a decade of legal entanglements that ended in June when he was cleared of fraud and conspiracy charges .

On Wednesday, two bodies had been brought to shore in Porticello, near Palermo, and two more were in the process of being brought ashore. Britain's Telegraph newspaper reported that the bodies of Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter were among the remains recovered Wednesday, but the civil protection chief would not confirm that report to CBS News.

Lynch, 59, rose to prominence in the late 1990s with the development of his software company, Autonomy, which helped businesses quickly find information buried in email and other digital documents. In 2011, Lynch sold the business to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, giving him a $800 million payday and cementing him as one of the U.K.'s richest people.

But the acquisition was later called one of the "most notorious failed mergers and acquisitions" after HP discovered alleged accounting issues, leading to Lynch's firing by HP's then-CEO, Meg Whitman. HP claimed that Autonomy had used accounting improprieties to bolster its underlying financials ahead of the acquisition, charges that Lynch steadfastly denied.

The case stretched into a 12-year legal fight that ended in June 2024 when a federal court jury in San Francisco delivered not-guilty verdicts.

"I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most — my family and innovating in my field," Lynch said in a statement after the verdict.

Here's what to know about Lynch.

What company did Mike Lynch start?

Lynch, who earned a PhD in mathematical computing from the U.K.'s Cambridge University, first cofounded a company called Cambridge Neurodynamics, based on the cofounders' work with pattern recognition. The firm used the tech to match fingerprints and car license plates, according to a 1997 article in The Guardian.

From there, Lynch cofounded Autonomy in 1996, which relied on a statistical model called Bayesian inference, named after a theorem developed by the 18th century statistician Thomas Bayes. (Lynch's luxury yacht was christened the "Bayesian.")

The company tapped into the growing need of businesses to sort through and find information within the vast reams of data created by the increasing use of computers and digital documents.

Autonomy's steady growth during its first decade resulted in Lynch being awarded one of the U.K's highest honors, the Office of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006.

Lynch told The Guardian in 1997 that people didn't quite believe that a growing tech business could emerge from the U.K.

"I have actually heard the comment, 'England, software? I thought you made bone china,'" he told the newspaper.

What happened after Autonomy's acquisition by HP?

At first, HP celebrated the purchase as a huge coup that would propel the Palo Alto, California, company down a promising new path, but then quickly came to regret it under then-CEO Meg Whitman.

HP claimed it found accounting irregularities, and the company ended up recognizing $8.8 billion in losses in the Autonomy deal. Whitman eventually fired Lynch in 2012, while also laying off thousands of workers as HP's fortunes sagged.

Throughout the past 12 years, Lynch rejected the allegations. He told the Wall Street Journal in 2012 that he was "ambushed" by the claims, which he described as "completely and utterly wrong."

What happened with Mike Lynch's legal case?

Lynch maintained his innocence while testifying earlier this year before a jury during a 2 1/2 month trial in San Francisco. U.S. Justice Department prosecutors called more than 30 witnesses in an attempt to prove allegations that Lynch engaged in accounting duplicity that bilked billions of dollars from HP.

The jury, as noted above, delivered not-guilty verdicts in June, vindicating Lynch, who pledged to return to the U.K. and to find new ways to innovate.

Who is Mike Lynch's wife?

Mike Lynch is married to Angela Bacares, who is one of the people rescued from the Mediterranean after the yacht sank. Lynch and Barares have two daughters. One of them, Hannah, 18, is among the missing, according to the BBC.

Bacares, 57, owns shares in Darktrace, a British cybersecurity company she and Lynch co-founded, the Sun noted . She sat in the front row of the courtroom during her husband's trial, but generally has preferred to stay out of the public eye, the Times of London reported in July.

"We made the decision that Angela would not be involved in the case. She stayed completely separate. Her focus was the family and children," Lynch told the Times last month.

Who Was on the Sunken Yacht? Tech Mogul Mike Lynch, His Family and Friends.

Mr. Lynch, the former chief executive of the software firm Autonomy, who was acquitted on fraud charges in June, was with friends and family when the yacht went down in a severe storm.

Michael de la Merced reported on Mike Lynch’s career and legal battles over the course of 13 years across two continents.

A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea aboard a superyacht was supposed to be a celebratory event for the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company, Autonomy, to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

Instead, it turned into a disaster after the yacht, a 180-foot boat called the Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily in a violent storm. Of the 22 people aboard, 15 were rescued and seven others died . Search operations ended on Friday after the final body was recovered from the site of the sunken yacht .

Here’s what we know about the passengers.

Mike Lynch and his family

Mr. Lynch, 59, is a British software entrepreneur who had once been described as his country’s Bill Gates. He founded the software firm Autonomy, which analyzed clients’ unorganized data, and turned it into one of the most prominent British technology companies of its time. He became a widely known corporate leader, who advised David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, and joined the board of the BBC.

In 2011, Mr. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, which was far above its market value, earning him hundreds of millions. But HP investors almost immediately soured on the transaction, and the American tech giant quickly fired its chief executive — and then Mr. Lynch.

HP later accused Mr. Lynch of misleading it about the state of Autonomy’s business, setting off a decade-long legal ordeal for the British executive, who denied the accusations. U.S. prosecutors charged him and other executives with fraud, and Autonomy’s chief financial officer was convicted in 2018.

Despite appeals to the British government, Mr. Lynch was extradited to the United States last year and was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco ahead of his criminal trial, which began in March. Facing the possibility of decades in prison if convicted, Mr. Lynch and another colleague were instead acquitted of all charges.

An official in Palermo, Sicily’s capital, said on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered. His wife, Angela Bacares, 57, accompanied him on the yacht, and she was rescued on Monday when it sank. She was a consistent presence at his trial in the United States. Records show that she controlled Revtom, the company listed as the owner of the Bayesian.

The body of Hannah Lynch , Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bacares’s 18-year-old daughter, was thought to be recovered on Friday.

The other guests

Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chair of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chairman of Hiscox, an insurance provider that trades on the London Stock Exchange, was on the yacht when it sank, along with his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71. Their bodies are thought to be among those recovered, but Italian authorities have not identified them.

Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a New York-based partner at the international law firm Clifford Chance, was also on the yacht. A former federal prosecutor who comes from a family of prominent lawyers, Mr. Morvillo represented Mr. Lynch during his criminal trial in San Francisco. His wife, Neda, 57, was with him on the yacht. Their bodies are also assumed to be among those recovered.

“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” a representative of Clifford Chance said in a statement.

Surviving passengers rescued from the yacht include Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Mr. Lynch’s venture firm, Invoke Capital; Ms. Golunski’s husband, James Emslie; and their one-year-old daughter Sophie. Also rescued were Ayla Ronald, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, and her partner, Matthew Fletcher.

The yacht had a crew of 10, and nine were rescued. The body of the chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered from the water, the Sicilian Civil Protection Department said.

Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting, and Kitty Bennett and Susan Campbell Beachy contributed research.
