‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

Two firefighters injured fighting a massive overnight fire that destroyed

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

The three towers that make up the Marina City Club

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

Boats on the water with palm trees in the background

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

The Club's marina consists of three floating concrete piers and one fixed pier. Our piers provide slips for 200 boats, including wet slips and lift slips with dry storage for additional boats. Pump out and refueling (unleaded and diesel) facilities are available at the end of pier A. The pump out facilities are free for any visiting yachter and fuel will be charged to your account. We also accept credit cards. Our fueling procedure requires that a dock attendant be present to assist. Call (757) 374-1676 or (757) 286-1752 for assistance. Three launching ramps provide members with access to the Lafayette River. Boat storage is based on the length of an individual boat. A full-time Harbormaster assists in the supervision of the marina and fuel dock.

NYCC has yachting programs that run year-round. We welcome many visiting yachters and regatta participants each year and have reciprocal clubs around the world. The Yachting Division is very active at NYCC and takes part in regattas, spring and fall racing series, seminars, holiday boat lighting celebrations and much more each year. Being a member of NYCC allows you access to not only the marina but access to our waterfront programs and our club-owned Flying Scots. Get your US Sailing Basic Keelboat certification, US Powerboating certificate, come paddle board with us and join us on a sunset sail down the Elizabeth River.

NYCC’s yachting division has played an important role in boating on the Chesapeake Bay and especially in Hampton Roads. Past club records reveal many family names that have made a tradition of participating in regional, national and international regattas. The first large regatta sponsored by the yachting division was the Labor Day Regatta of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Yacht Racing Association in 1939. Boats from the Portsmouth Boat Club, the Hampton Yacht Club and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club participated. The Labor Day Regatta is still hosted to this day! NYCC also hosted the Virginia Sailing Regatta, a Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association event, on numerous occasions beginning in the mid-1940s. The Maury Regatta, in which high school sailors from all over Hampton Roads sailed, was held annually during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

Perhaps the most important regattas to be held at the club have been the National Hampton One-Design Championships. Charles McCoy, Jr. won the title in 1961 and was responsible for bringing the regatta to NYCC in 1962, where he successfully defended his title. The club and its members have been instrumental in keeping the Hampton class of boat active on the Bay. The club was once home to the largest fleet on the Chesapeake Bay and during the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s it was the most competitive one design class on the Bay.

NYCC now hosts the Labor Day Regatta, Wolcott Memorial Regatta, Dink Vail Regatta (formally Willoughby Challenge), Junior Annual Regatta and a Fall and Spring Keelboat race series.

Great day! Can't wait to go back. I rented a boat to take my son and his friends tubing for the first time (5-10 years old). The kids had a blast. Our captain was very friendly and amazing with them (like a camp counselor- which us parents appreciated). He pulled the younger ones at a slower pace and kicked it up a notch for the moms and older ones. From booking to departure, the experience was seamless. We're looking forward to booking again for a nice relaxing adults only boat :)

Not a good place. Joe the owner like used car salesman. This is not boating. This is having a very nice captain (but with sketchy coast guard details) who moves for 10 or 15 mins to an open bay and then basically u sit there for 2 hours. They advertised certain equipment to be onboard but never appeared. Finally i asked if we could drive a but and he reluctantly did. But dont expect much fun for 4500 plus 20 percent tip. Guess joe tells them not to use any gas. Go elsewhere.

Start to finish my experience with this company was nothing short of AMAZING!!!!! 5 star VIP treatment, from the customer service rep that helped me select a boat to the boat captain who drove us. My family and I were treated like royalty. Chartered a boat for 4 hours for my mothers 65th birthday, my parents aren't boat people but convinced them to go along. After our outing with Yacht Hampton I'm happy to share my parents are now boat people! I can't say enough about how amazing the owner Joe was. My father is disabled after suffering multiple strokes which has severely impaired his mobility. Joe the owner went out of his way to prepare a pick up for my father which allowed us to take him out on the boat as well, the captain Michael was an awesome guy as well, you could say he literally carried my father on his back to help get him on the boat! We brought a cooler with food and drinks, anchored in a cove where we ate, drank, swam and relaxed. Ended the charter with an hour of tubing which was super fun! The only place to charter a boat in the Hamptons in my opinion. Well maintained fleet of late model vessels with professional licensed captains and amazing customer service. What I'm most impressed with and taken back by is the effort and follow up the owner and staff put into making sure my handicapped father was able to join us for my mother's birthday boat outing.

We rented a boat from Yacht Hampton a few weeks in advance for my sisters bachelorette party. When we arrived at the dock we received a call that the boat we rented was broken and they couldn't fix it in time. They offered us a smaller boat and a partial refund to which we agreed. When that boat was supposed to arrive they called again and said that boat wasn't available either and that we were basically out of luck. If it wasn't for one of our bridesmaids who pushed heavily for a solution, they would have left us hanging. They ended up being able to get us an upgraded yacht later in the day for no additional charge that was beautiful, but we had to rearrange our whole day to make that happen, and I believe that without the bridesmaid who pushed them to make something happen for us, they would have left us without a boat and ultimately a ruined bachelorette party. Although they solved our problem, they made our morning incredibly stressful and I likely would never book with them again.
