What our customers have to say about Ao Po Grand Marina

Anthony Swanston, SV Wild Fox

Situated at the southern end of Ao Phang-Nga there are no tidal restrictions entering or leaving this seven year old marina which offers a standard of luxury almost unsurpassed. It is home to many superyachts and the Sunsail charter fleet but with lots of room for cruisers. Good pontoons with electricity and water (not potable). There is plenty of turning space and the docking crews are first rate – a “pushing” dinghy will meet you at the entrance and there will be catchers on the pontoon. Call first on CH 69 as they will know better than the office where you are going to tie up. There is a huge haul out area and good local labour. There is a beautiful pool with absolutely pristine modern loos and showers adjacent. There is a bar/restaurant at the marina, a chandlery and a short walk away a local eaterie with a European/Thai place almost next door.

Important Notice (Effective 1 January 2016)

It is mandatory for all foreign yachts coming into Phuket, Thailand and outgoing from Phuket, Thailand to be equipped with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) or AIS Class B system or higher class appropriately.

AIS must be ACTIVE when coming into Thai water or leaving Thai water or moving to somewhere else.

Marine department allowed to turn off the AIS transmitter while the yachts stay in Marina or Hardstand.

For more information, please contact Marine Department, Phuket Branch.

Ken and Jean

Thank you to all the Ao Po Grand Marina Staff. We have enjoyed our stay with you. We have been in many marinas halfway around the world and you need to know your staff are the best! They are friendly, helpful and skilled working under a great manager. With appreciation and best wishes for the future success of your marina.

Tom and Nancy Zydler Captain and Mate of M/Y Whale Song

M/Y Whale Song would like to thank you and the staff at Ao Po Grand Marina for the help we received while finishing various projects during our stay. You certainly have done a lot more than any other marina management would offer. Your local knowledge saved us a lot of time and money with restocking our wine supply and knowing which fresh markets to visit and when. Perhaps your thoughtfulness in our time of need was the greatest of your services. We felt very lucky to have someone else thinking of our needs.

Stuart Smithson

Since I moved my boat to the Marina I have had nothing to complain about‚ which must mean something! The dock staff are willing and helpful and most speak some English. Whatever your needs they will do their best to provide the service. The fuel dock is easily accessed in both the NE and SW monsoon seasons‚ which is a blessing if you a have a single engined boat. Nothing more to say except keep up the good work guys.

Gordon Millar

I have stayed at Ao Po twice aboard my boat‚ and have nothing but praise for the manager‚ the staff and the marina.

I have found Derrick van Deventer‚ to be not only approachable and friendly‚ but highly professional in his duties as manager. His staff are probably the best trained‚ and competent‚ marina staff I have encountered in 10 years of living on my boat‚ and cruising in SE Asia. The staff are not only proficient in their duties‚ but are courteous‚ and have demonstrated on a day to day basis commendable initiative in assisting me during my stays in the Marina.

Thibault Salaun GM Twinpalms Cruises

The location‚ the 24 hour access and the marina team are simply fantastic and it is a pleasure to manage our daily charters with such customer service level and smooth operations.

Bill O’Leary, retired GM of Amancruises and author of the Andaman Sea Pilot

Ao Po Grand Marina is my number one pick of all the marinas in Thailand. The location looks directly at magnificent Phang Nga, the fuel dock is ideally located, rubbish collection and security are world class. I have no hesitation in recommending Ao Po Grand Marina to all our managed boat owners simply because it has all-tide access and is located on the doorstep of the best cruising grounds in the Kingdom.

5 Best Marinas in Phuket That You Should Definitely Check Out

Table of Contents

Explore the Best Marinas in Phuket , where world-class facilities, exceptional services, and stunning coastal views come together to provide the ultimate hub for yachting enthusiasts in this spectacular island paradise.

Phuket is a well-liked yachting resort, and its protected east coast makes for an ideal mooring spot with a variety of large marinas nearby.

For a number of reasons, many people consider the island of Phuket to be the sailing capital of Asia.

Boat owners will discover top-notch amenities at Phuket’s marinas since they aim to suit the needs of their frequent guests.

With its abundance of beautiful landmasses and glittering waterways that look like they belong in a novel, the area has an irresistible nautical allure.

It’s important to note that you can only approach Phuket’s eastern shoreline from the south.

The Sarasin Bridge, which blocks the way around the island’s north and is too low for most boats to pass through, remains closed.

We are listing down some ports regarded as the island’s greatest marinas, from breathtaking beauty to first-rate amenities and opulent waterfront restaurants.

5 Best Marinas in Phuket That You Should Definitely Check Out

1. phuket yacht haven.

In 1997, Phuket Yacht Haven Marina opened its doors with 150 spaces for all kinds of watercraft.

It’s something that you should check out certainly. It is situated on the island of Phuket’s northeastern shore, in a tranquil region. It is close to the airport—less than 15 minutes by car.

Both tourists and sailors looking for a decent port-of-call for the start and end of maritime exploration tours will find this marina site to be excellent.

This marina’s position in the northeast puts it closer to Phang Nga Bay, home to magnificent limestone islands, including James Bond Island.

This marina can accommodate boats up to 80 meters long with a maximum draught of 5 meters.

Some amenities include rebuilt docks, boardwalks, and complete hook-ups with phone, power, water, and WiFi access, in addition to the marina’s more than 200 berths.

2. Phuket Boat Lagoon

Boat Lagoon Phuket is conveniently located on the northern fringes of Phuket Town. It was the first marina complex on Phuket Island and has been fully operating since 1994.

Owing to its ideal location, it has easy access to a number of luxurious condominiums, serviced apartments, workplaces, quaint stores, and a variety of restaurants.

Before it developed into an exclusive lifestyle and residential village, Phuket Boat Lagoon was a tidal flat on the stream of Klong Tha Rua, a lengthy, shallow, meandering watercourse.

Three service cranes with a combined lifting capacity of 80 tonnes are among its amenities, in addition to dry stack storage spaces large enough to accommodate 20 speedboats.

It also offers 180 berths, each with access to water and power and 144 hard-standing spaces for vessels.

Yacht owners may get all the help they need to maintain and repair yachts up to 80 tonnes at Phuket Boat Lagoon thanks to the marina’s skilled management and comprehensive choice of services, which include dry stacking and travel lift.

3. Royal Phuket Marina

It is the first luxury lifestyle marina of the highest caliber in Thailand. The Royal Phuket Marina is located on more than 30 hectares of excellent property on Koh Kaew, near Phuket Boat Lagoon.

The marina is one of Asia’s top boating centers, with 350 slots for boats up to 35 meters long and 400 luxurious riverfront residences, penthouses, and apartments.

It is the only marina on the island with a boat lock, a non-tidal deepwater basin, and private moorings just outside of homes.

It is also Asia’s most advanced and high-tech yachting infrastructure. In the midst of beautifully planted parks and gardens, more than half of Royal Phuket Marina is devoted to entertainment and retail establishments.

The British Yacht Harbour Association has given the marina its 5 Gold Anchor Award. It is the ideal location for sailing and serves as the starting point for island hopping because it is close to Asia’s greatest cruising seas.

The Koh Phi Phi white sand beaches and the Krabi limestone cliffs are also close by. As a result, visitors may choose between cruising, tanning, or exploring Krabi’s limestone cliffs.

The Similan islands, which are a few hours away from the marina and are excellent for diving, are perfect for thrill-seekers and adrenaline addicts.

At the entrance to Phang Nga Bay, you will find the famous Ao Po Grand Marina. There are no tide limits, and this Marina is accessible 24/7.

The marina can handle boats up to 100 meters in length thanks to its 300 berths and 10-meter-wide promenade.

It is ideal for yacht shows and yachts since it has a minimum depth of 3 meters inside and 7 meters on the seaward side of the outside pier.

Thus, the annual Thailand Yacht exhibition is held in The Ao Po Grand Marina. The Port of Call Restaurant and the D’ Deck Bar are two of the top restaurants here.

An abundance of pure water is provided within the docks by its cutting-edge reverse osmosis system.

Its subterranean fuel tanks can store 20,000 liters or three times as much gasoline and diesel.

Due to the size of Ao Po Grand Marina, a well-designed breakwater is necessary to protect yachts from the elements and surges.

A Guide to Phuket’s 4 Yachting Marinas

  • August 19, 2019
  • Luxe Phuket
  • Category: Phuket Travel Guide

superyacht marina phuket

Many regard the island of Phuket as the sailing mecca of Asia for a variety of reasons. Rife with pristine landmasses and sparkling waters that seem straight out of a storybook, the undeniable nautical appeal of the region is evident for all to see.

Additionally, the sailing scene on its coastal waters is held in high regard because of the different yacht marinas of Phuket. From breathtaking scenery, top-grade facilities, and luxurious waterfront establishments, we have listed down the four harbors that are considered as the island’s crème de la crème of marinas.

Royal Phuket Marina

The world-class Royal Phuket Marina, or RPM, is situated at the entryway of the iconic Phang Nga Bay, and neighbors the Phuket Boat Lagoon. Its strategic location makes it a portal to some of the island’s most stunning scenery such as Phang Nga Bay’s limestone cliffs, the pristine beaches of Phi Phi, the diving haven of Similan Islands, and the island of Kho Yao Noi . Established under the banner of ‘luxury lifestyle marina,’ the size of the marina spans 30 hectares, and it has 350 berths for yachts up to 35 meters long. It stands out as the only marina on the island with private doorstep moorings, a non-tidal deepwater basin, and boat locks.

The Royal Phuket Marina, as its name would suggest, has a heavy inclination towards providing a grandiose package. Around the marina are 400 lavish waterfront villas, spacious penthouses, and high-end condominiums to add to the luxurious accommodation of the 5-star hotel that features a tennis court, swimming pools, and fitness facilities. Moreover, the 250-meter long and 8-meter wide promenade provides opulent specialty stores, a gourmet supermarket, restaurants, and boutiques.

Website:   www.royalphuketmarina.com

Check out Villa Kalyana , a luxury holiday home right by the very waters of the Royal Phuket Marina.

Phuket Boat Lagoon

Bearing the distinction as Phuket’s first premier marina complex, Phuket Boat Lagoon has been tending to water vessels since 1994. Its location, which is on the periphery of Phuket Town in Koh Kaew, gives it excellent proximity to a lineup of swanky condominiums, serviced apartments, offices, boutique shops, and a wide array of dining options. Most notably, it is only a stone’s throw away from the similarly named resort, where one can enjoy an array of fitness and leisure activities including swimming, tennis, and jogging.

Phuket Boat Lagoon was at first a tidal flat on the creek of Klong Tha Rua before it became the premier lifestyle and residential village that it is today. Its facilities and services include a trio of service cranes with a lifting power of 80 tons and dry stack storage that can cater to 20 speedboats. There’s also enough hard-standing space for 144 vessels and it has 180 berths, each with water and power provisions. Other conveniences include changing room facilities, complimentary Wi-Fi, hot showers, and a swimming pool.

Website:   www.phuketboatlagoon.com

Phuket Yacht Haven

Phuket Yacht Haven Marina opened its doors in 1997, with 150 berths for water vessels of any kind. The marina is usually accessible from the east even despite a tidal situation, but extra attention is necessary for deep-draft vessels during low tides. Berthing can accommodate vessels that are up to 60 meters in size. The minimum depth available is at two meters, while their outer berths have depths ranging from four to five meters.

Yacht Haven’s close proximity to Phang Nga Bay also appeals to many, with it being one of the most significant yachting locations in the country. The bay sees constant sailing activity throughout the year, bringing together the country’s ritzy water vessels every so often. What’s more, the marina is also just a short distance away from the international airport, making it a convenient location for those fancying regular trips in and out of the country.

Website:  www.pyhmarina.com

Ao Po Grand Marina

The Ao Po Grand Marina, or sometimes abbreviated as APGM, opened for business in August 2008 and has since grown by 100 more berths from its original 200. This marina looks to stretch the standards of vessel allowance, ensuring generous berths with up to 10-meter wide walkways and taking in vessels even beyond 100 meters in length. Within the basin, three meters is the maximum docking depth, and towards the seaward part, the lowest dock depth holds at seven meters.

Its state-of-the-art reverse osmosis system ensures an abundance of clean water within the docks while its underground fuel tanks provide 20,000 liters of gasoline and diesel, thrice as much. Hauling power reaches 80 tons thanks to a 100-foot Roodberg trailer lift. Ao Po Grand Marina’s massive expanse warrants a well-engineered breakwater that shields vessels from weather and swells.

Website:  www.aopograndmarina.com

Check out Villa Leewadee , a 5-bedroom hilltop luxury villa just a few minutes from the Ao Po Grand Marina.

. . . . . . . .

Rivaling some of the world’s best in terms of equipment, range of services, and quality of accommodation, these yacht marinas in Phuket are undoubtedly top-notch. Each has helped placed Phuket as one of the go-to destinations for yachting adventures and is mostly responsible for a significant share of sailors who frequent the island’s waters. At the end of the day, whichever one you opt to go with, you are guaranteed to have a fun nautical holiday amidst a sophisticated and high-end complex in Phuket.

Located on the north-east tip of the island, at Laem Phrao, Yacht Haven can be accessed from the east on all tides. The marina has over 220 berths for vessels up to 70 metres. All berthings are entirely free-floating, and as the marina is very sheltered, there are no towering harbour walls to obscure the view or block the wind. This helps it to feel as close to being at anchor as you can get in a marina.

On shore, the Yacht Haven Clubhouse contains a restaurant and bar, showers, lockers and toilet facilities. The Yacht Haven also offers fuel, water and provisioning services.

Yacht Haven Marina offers an ideal starting point to explore the wonders of Phang Nga Bay and the islands. Just a 15 minute drive to Phuket International Airport, Yacht Haven has become a prime superyacht destination. Nick Wyatt, well-known to captains and yacht owners world-wide as the manager of Asia ’s popular superyacht marina, reports, “As a major full service marina in SE Asia , we believe Yacht Haven has an important role to play in driving this part of Thailand’s tourism sector. Presently with a restaurant, bar, gym, pool and accommodation, plans are underway to upgrade and increase our shore side services. With a further 30 new Superyacht berths planned for the next year and the aspiration to constantly improve our personal service, at all levels, we aim to keep Yacht Haven Marina a secure, choice destination.”

With a capacity of 200 berths and well placed for cruising the magnificent Phang Nga Bay, Ao Po Grand Marina can host yachts of any boat length from 6m up to 80m+ and has a special focus on facilitating Superyachts. Visiting Yachts

Testimonial, welcome to phuket, thailand.

superyacht marina phuket

Phuket is the largest and most developed island in Thailand. Conveniently located in the Andaman Sea this tropical paradise has fast become a major tourist destination and the Superyacht Hub for Asia. Crystal clear waters and golden sandy beaches have been attracting visitors to Phuket for over 40 years. Just a short cruise away are the outer islands which offer peace and tranquillity which is a world away from the hustle and bustle of Phuket.

The development of the International Airport (which can cater for any private jet and most commercial aircraft sizes including 747’s), high-end villas, beach clubs and hotel facilities has meant that Phuket is now a playground for the rich and famous.

Scuba diving is another major attraction for visiting superyachts to Phuket and Whale Sharks are regularly spotted in the high season when there is plenty of plankton for them to feed on. The area is home to two types of island, granite islands are low level and tend to be forested e.g. the Similan Islands and then there are the limestone islands these islands tend to rise vertically from the sea and produce dramatic scenery e.g. Phi Phi, these islands sometimes have holes in the middle these are called hongs (room in Thai) and tourists tend to swim/kayak into the middle of these stunning islands.

Asia Pacific Superyachts currently has 3 offices on this paradise tropical island these are strategically located so that clients are offered a bespoke tailor-made service which can be offered 24 hours day 7 days a week. The Phuket office has 12 full-time staff and combined superyacht service experience of over 80 years, staff are used to dealing with high-end client requests and the office is headed by the hands-on Thai owner Jojo who has well-established connections with the Phuket customs, harbor and immigration authorities, there is a saying if Jojo can’t do it then nobody can.

In Phuket, you can find marinas which have 24-hour deep water access and can accommodate superyachts of up to 150M’s in length. Yachts are now basing themselves in Phuket for the season and then cruising to the Andaman Islands in India, the stunning uninhabited islands of the Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar (Burma) and of course to the outer (quiet) islands near to Phuket.

For yachts needing to carry out maintenance work, there is a haul out facility for ships up to 800GRT. Competent locally based tradespeople offer engineering, painting, stainless and teak work. Their prices are very competitive and work can be carried out to international standards within reasonable timeframes.

More information on Thailand:

superyacht marina phuket

Thank you all so much for your help and assistance during our time in Phuket. You are all amazing, so helpful and attentive, nothing is ever a problem or too difficult to organise. It was a pleasure working with you all. From even before we arrived you were making sure things were sorted out and even with the difficulties of COVID you made everything run smoothly. When TM comes back to Thailand I really look forward to working with you again.

M/Y Lionheart

We used Gordon and Jojo to look after Lionheart during our visit to Thailand in early 2019. Without a doubt, the APS team are one of the most conscientious and hardworking yacht agents I’ve come across – they are quick, efficient and simply manage to get the job done and done well.

Captain Thomas Jones

superyacht marina phuket

Gordon and his team provided excellent and organised service. We relied upon them for everything from assistance with provisioning and customs and immigration clearances, to general concierge work including booking a photographer. Their local knowledge and contacts smoothed the way for successful and enjoyable trips. Gordon was always on hand to assist in any way he could.

Captain Daniel Hughes

M/Y Archimedes

When we headed for Thailand and Myanmar, we used Gordon Fernandes of Asia Pacific Superyachts. We found Gordon to be equally as competent. His task was made immeasurably difficult because we had whimsical guests aboard virtually all the time. Gordon continuously managed to accomplish the impossible for us, not just in guest services but in the myriad needs always required in operations of this scale. Dockage, clearances, fuel, provisions, transportation, tours, guides, permits, aviation support, etc, were handled with efficiency and apparent ease. Gordon proved to be indispensable over and over again, particularly with our ever changing Myanmar cruise.

Captain Chris Walsh

superyacht marina phuket

We had the pleasure of working with Asia Pacific Superyachts while based in Phuket and highly recommend to anyone going to Thailand to get in touch with Gordon and his team. Simply put, their assistance greatly helped and enhanced every aspect of our time in Thailand – from paperwork and service work to the whims of the guests and needs of the crew. Too many examples come to mind to list, so suffice it to say that no matter how small or big the task APS is well equipped to help clear up all of your headaches as well as help prevent many more. What’s more, is that this incredible service is brought to you by a group of incredibly pleasant people that are a delight to work with. Likewise, if you are coming/going to/from Thailand via Malaysia and Singapore I can highly recommend using APS in those locations as well.

Captain Jonathon Allen

For many centuries Phuket was an important stop for trading ships on the route between India and China. During the Sukothai Period, the time of the first Thai Kingdom, Phuket was associated with other cities in South Thailand famous for their vast tin reserves. During the following Ayuthaya Period of the 16th century the Thais governed the island’s northern and central regions while the southern and western parts were given over to the tin trade, a concession in the hands of foreigners.

phuket1

The landscape is one of forested hills, coconut groves, rubber plantations and a coastline dotted with numerous spectacular beaches with surrounding waters containing varied marine life. The island and the surrounding 32 smaller islands form Phuket Province for a total area of 570 square kilometres. On the North Phuket is connected to the mainland by two bridges running side-by-side, the older Sarasin Bridge and the newer Thepkrasattri Bridge.

phuket2

From Yacht Haven to Ko Hong (16NM’s), offering kayaking, caves and very beautiful scenery. If guests wish they can take the tender (shallow water) and go to the sea gypsy village near ‘James Bond’ Island. We do not recommend guests stop at James Bond Island as it is highly visited by tourists. Anchor at Ko Hong overnight.

Yacht departs Ko Hong and heads south for Ko Kai Nok (18NM’s) for beach time, snorkeling and swimming. Mid-morning the yacht departs Ko Kai Nok and heads to the East side of Ko Yao Yai and Ko Yao Noi (19NM’s) for a very nice sail through the Ko Pak Bia group of islands.

Again, large limestone islands are found here. It is less touristy and there are a couple of fantastic beaches in this area, with the best one at Ko Hong. There is another Ko Hong on this side and guests can go in the tender to the center of Ko Hong. Anchor overnight.

Boat anchors at Raleigh beach. Guests spend the day here and can select to go rock climbing, swimming or just chill out under the limestone cliffs.

There is also a small cave which houses Chinese Viking paintings and is the place locals collect birds’ nests, used to make the famous ‘Chinese Birds Nest Soup’.

Late evening/overnight depart to Phuket – Surin Beach. (60NM’s)

Spend the day at the world famous Amanpuri hotel, reported to be among the top ten of hotels around the world. Guests can relax with pampering, on the beach or do some of the many activities on the island like elephant riding, go-karting, monkey and snake shows and a visit to Phuket’s famed “Fantasea’ (stage show).

phuket5

Anchor overnight – please note that there can be a large swell rolling onto this beach so anchoring and tender runs will be weather dependent.

Surin Beach to Similan Islands (51Nm’s) – The Similan Islands lie northwest of Phuket in the Andaman Sea. In 1982 this 128 square kilometer area was declared a marine national park. In recent years this group of nine small islands (Similan is derived from the Malay sembilan and means nine) has become one of the leading attractions for visitors to Southern Thailand.

Phuket itself is the largest island in Thailand and has its own international airport so you can fly in direct and be close to your yacht charter base very quickly. The four marinas on the island are on the east coast, and from these you can get out to the Similan Islands, Phi Phi islands and Phang Nga Bay.

As a destination in its own right, Phuket is a jewel of a tropical island. With miles of white sandy beaches, party towns and hideaway coves for you to relax in solitude, this is unarguably a beautiful island in its own right. Taste the Thai cuisine, get a flavour of Thai culture and see the limestone cliffs with their caves and grottoes.

Thailand is a maritime nation thanks to the thousands of islands that surround its long coastline, and you'll soon appreciate its seafaring culture from fisheries to people just getting about. On a Thailand yacht charter with Borrow a Boat you'll soon appreciate what we mean!

Explore Phuket By Renting A Yacht

Phuket is in one of the most beautiful parts of Thailand. Off the west coast of the Malay Peninsula it is perfectly located for you to explore many of the other islands and mainland tourist hot spots, with the added advantage of often being able to moor up and enjoy the sunset when all the tourist boats have filled up and emptied the beaches while you spend the night.

Here are some suggestions where you might visit:

- Phang Nga Bay is the bay between Phuket and the Malay Peninsula. This is renowned for its limestone spires and jaw-dropping scenery, and much protected as a national park. The James Bond movie The Man With the Golden Gun was filmed here, as was Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. You can even sail to 'James Bond Island'!

- Krabi is the mainland province to the east of Phuket and includes the major tourist destination of Ao Nang. Do try to get to Rai Leh Beach - a more refined tourist resort well away from the mad crowds of Ao Nang.

- The Phi Phi Islands have two sides to them - Phi Phi Island's Phi Phi Don's no limits nightlife on its sandy beaches and nearby Ko Phi Phi Lee where you will find the exquisitely beautiful Monkey Bay where monkeys come out of the forest to feed on crab and Maya Bay made famous in the Hollywood movie The Beach. This is all a protected national park.

- The Similan Islands and Surin Islands , northwest of Phuket on the Andaman Sea are a forgotten paradise that you will visit to enjoy nature at its best. Many reckon the scuba diving and snorkelling is some of the best in the world. This is a national park well worth the trouble of visiting on a luxury charter!

Suggested Sailing Routes From Phuket

On your bareboat charter or crewed yacht charter, there are a wide array of sailing destinations from Phuket. Here are two you can take on your luxury yacht charter.

7 days - Phang Nga Bay and Ko Phi Phi: Over seven days you can see the islands around Phuket. Heading for Phang Nga Bay on the first night, then Ko Hung, Ko Kai, and Ko Phi Phi, you will see some of the most beautiful sights of the Andaman Sea. The limestone cliffs and places like Maya Beach made famous by Hollywood on this island hopping adventure are sights you'll never forget.

10 days - Similan Islands and Surin Islands: Island hopping north up Thailand's west coast you will visit one of the best scuba diving locations in the world. There are no resorts or hotels ashore - kept as national parks they are unspoiled and left to nature. Most of the islands are uninhabited, so there will be the opportunity to drop anchor and have the beach to yourself. Did we say diving and snorkelling? Yes, thanks to the rare and endangered species of marine life that live here, you're likely to see fish that you'd never see even on other tropical island yacht charters.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Phuket

Unlike Europe, the sailing season in the Thailand runs from November to April - perfect for a dose of winter sun. The winter monsoon is settled and you will encounter weather between 25-35 degrees C.

Within this period, between November to March you will find the winds are from the NE and rarely get over Force 4.

If you can get to Thailand outside of school holidays you will find the sailing weather at its best and the resorts less crowded. Could you consider doing a Thailand yacht charter early in the Southwest Monsoon? Though the SimilanIslands are out of reach (as is anything west of Phuket) it is quieter in May - July, though this is the beginning of the rainy season that intensifies in July and runs right through til October.

The Climate

North East Monsoon: Thanks to being on the Equator the winds in Thailand never get too strong in the sailing season. Expects winds of F2-4 from the NE and it to be generally dry.

Southwest Monsoon: This runs from May to October and is the rainy season in this part of the world. Between May and July, expect winds up to F6 and changeable, and rain anything from every afternoon (or none at all) to solidly for your two weeks. Between July and October this is storm season with cyclones hitting the country and rain being almost guaranteed.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Phuket?

There are four marinas in Phuket - Ao Po Grand Marina, Yacht Haven Phuket, Royal Phuket Marina and Phuket BoatLagoon. All four have large charter fleets and can accommodate superyachts of up to 80 metres.

When are the best times to hire a boat in Phuket?

It is possible to sail out of Phuket year round. While the best time is between November and February during the Northeast Monsoon, you can enjoy your sailing vacation from Phuket Island as late as May in the early stages of the southwest monsoon. You won't be able to sail to the Surin Islands or anything west of Phuket as the seas are exposed to the weather.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Phuket?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Phuket?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Dress for warm weather but do have something for tropical rains - light but waterproof.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skipper on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

With its breathtaking scenery, perfect turquoise water, magnificent coastlines, and exotic islands, this area is certain to make you wish you could stay there forever, that’s how amazing it is. Of course, sailing is the best way to explore all the beauties this place boasts, so you’ll want to have your yacht or boat anchored there. There are more and more people who choose to enjoy the quiet waters of the Andaman Sea around Phuket, for sailing and snorkeling, in the urge to recharge their batteries after all the hustle and bustle of a city they live in, according to Islander .

The Yacht Haven Marina has as many as 158 berths, which means there’s room for vessels from six to sixty meters in length. The marina has an amazing location about 30 minutes north of Phuket town, yet it is perfectly secluded in the tranquil waters of Cape Phrao to give you the peace you need so much. Nonetheless, it has Phuket International Airport in its vicinity, which is perfect for those boat owners who travel frequently.

Mr. A ndy Stephens, the marina manager, and his staff can connect you with various reputable contractors if you need them to provide you with interior refurbishing, deck-work, electrical services, mechanical procedures, or any other service. You can even have your boat delivered to some other nearby area if needed. You just need to ask, and Yacht Haven staff will see to it that all your wishes come true. Even if you’re just thinking about buying a boat but can’t seem to make a decision, Mr. Stephens can help you with that, as well. He is well aware of how overwhelming the market can be, which, naturally, makes it more difficult for potential buyers to make a choice, so he offers his long experience to make the decision-making process much easier for those who seek help.

Not only are you sure to love a walk through the marina’s tree-lined shore, but it can also lead you to a beautiful waterfront restaurant, The Haven, where you can relax and enjoy   magnificent views . Of course, you can also count on delicious food there, from European and Thai meals to all the pub favorites. You can also rely on the friendly staff to be there for you, whether you want them to stock your boat with food and beverages or you need someone to cater for a large party.

There are also so many sailing activities all around the area that make quite a good reason why you should choose to dock at the Yacht Haven Marina. Another reason is that the marina is accessible for all vessels, which is particularly good news for those who own larger boars, especially because this is the only marina in Phuket where they can moor and have any necessary work done.

As for those with smaller boats, they can access both Phang Nga Bay and the Andaman Sea. Finally, let’s not forget to mention that, according to Mr. Stephens, “Yacht Haven has some of the most affordable prices in Asia.” The prices for berthing may vary depending on the size of your boat, but it’s good to know that you don’t have to fear exorbitant costs.

Mr. Graham Frost, for instance, keeps his commercial yachts at the Yacht Haven Marina primarily because of its position. He firmly believes that being able to access the waters of east and west Phuket makes it easier for him to conduct so many successful live-aboard sea adventure trips.

According to Mr. Stephens, even though the marina boasts the amazing scenery and serenity, it wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for his team, the competent and friendly staff that takes care of the place. He says: “Our biggest asset is our staff.”

The Yacht Haven Marina is expected to be further expanded in the future; at least that’s what the Phuket Island Marina Company plans to do. They intend to develop the land area and double the number of births. Once they realize this plan, the marina will have elegant condominiums and even more amenities for those who choose it to moor there.
