Older vs Newer: Higher Quality?

New into yachting, I have been researching the many options before making a decision upon which manufacturer to purchase given our limited budget. That limits us to used vessels. Often I have heard it said that the older boats (1970's & 80's) "was when these were really built well". So I wonder if this is true, why. Perhaps due to the difficult economy of the 1980's? Due to trying to lower prices to serve a larger market? Desire for a greater profit ratio &/or to satisfy investors? We have settled on Siverton 40 aft cabin as a model dsign that suits us, and those built in the 1980's are becoming "reasonabale" considering what that buys in interior layout. However I have no idea about the actual quality of Siverton vs. Chris Craft or Sea Ray or whatever. I hear experienced captains state unequivocally that anything other than the name stays (Bertram, Hattaris, Viking, Albin, etc) are garbage, yet others seem to be quite satisfied with the lesser named brands, and alot of people seem to buy them. However faced with chosing between a 1982 vs 1985 vs 1988, I haven't a clue which would be "built better". I would hate to purchase newer when in fact older might be better. Can anyone educate me about this, particularly about the Siverton, but also generally as this would be quite an interesting education. Thanks Dr J

there are a lot of answers to what may seem to be simple question... first, keep in mind that with most builders quality went up and down over teh years and even depending on the boat size or model. for instance, while bayliner has often been regarded as an entry level, low quality builder their large 40 to 46' boats have always been better than the rest of their line. bottom line you really can't say brand X is junk, brand Y is best when considering some of the most common production builders like Silverton, Sea Ray, Bayliner, Carver, Cruisers, etc... are there better builders generally speaking? yes... Bertram, Hatteras, Tiara, Viking, and a few more. Next, keep in mind that how an older boat has been maintained, upgraded and used over the years is probably even more critical than the label on the side. As to those who say, get a Bert or Hatr, everything else is junk... they are missing the most important point. YOU need to get the boat that suit YOUR needs... if you're going to stay in sheltered waters for casual cruisign, you dont' need a tank like an old hatteras and a well maintained silveton may be just fine for YOUR needs

Hello DockTourJ, In selling used boats on the Chesapeake for 20+ years, we have always had good luck with the 1982 to 1990 Silverton 40. They run well, generally survey well, and are big enough to be a comfortable family cruiser. The survey issue that does sometimes occur is wet deck core due to the bow rail stanchions leaking. So, be aware of that potential as the repair is costly. I have recently seen selling prices in the $30K to $40K range. Not many years ago, these were near $100K boats. The main difference in the older to newer production run is the interior finish. Early boats had teak interior trim, and from 1985 on it was oak. Formica counter top colors evolved from earlier neutral tones to lots of pink in the 1986-1988 years. Carpet and soft goods can be expensive to replace on these boats because there's lots of it. Flybridge and aft deck canvas can be costly if it needs replaced too. General construction quality seems to me to have remained decent through the production run of this series. I would encourage you to buy the best boat you can find. There's plenty of inventory to look at. Bear in mind that if a "fixer upper" is $5 to $10K cheaper than a "star", buy the better boat. You will likely not make a nice boat out of the fixer for double the difference in the initial purchase price.
Thanks for the quality and sound advice. Personally don't like the pink formica colors. ALso it appears that wet bars are on earlier models that I have seen but not on the 1988s. Dr J

Silverton 43 Motor Yacht
- By George Sass, Jr.
- Updated: October 4, 2007
“Wow. This is huge.”
“This has to be bigger than 43 feet.”
“I could spend the entire summer on this.”
Spending close to an hour lounging aboard the new Silverton 43 at the New York Boat Show, I noticed this general sentiment among everyone who walked through. Slowly, the boat’s gymnasium-like saloon became packed. Dropped-jaw show-goers came in, but didn’t leave. They wanted to explore the cavernous accommodations, plop comfortably on the plush settees and bathe in the warm, indirect lighting.
Sure, the reactions could have been coincidence, but Silverton’s proven ability to dissect buyers’ desires makes it more likely this was the desired response.
“The 43 is intended to fill the gap between the 392 Motor Yacht and the 453 Motor Yacht,” said Chip Shea, vice president of sales and marketing for the Luhrs Group. “We focused on the 392 and incorporated feedback from owners.”
Galley stowage on the 43 rivals that in most Manhattan apartments. Features include a pullout pantry, overhead cabinets, pot and pan stowage, and shelves for plates. Owners said, “Give me a real oven,” so Silverton chose a Force 10 range instead of the combination microwave/convection ovens that dominate many standard equipment lists. There’s also a dual-voltage Norcold refrigerator and freezer, a Moen faucet, a coffee maker, a stainless-steel sink and a standard microwave oven. The sole is a durable faux wood vinyl that’s easy to wipe down.
Similar to the 392, the 43 has a galley one step lower than the main saloon. The cook remains part of the main saloon action, but out of the way. The interior layout flows easily through the boat, unhindered by harsh angles or cumbersome furniture. Privacy and openness are perfectly juxtaposed in a luscious package.
The saloon-thanks to nearly 7 feet of headroom, expansive windows and the 14-foot, 10-inch beam-feels more like a great room than a saloon on a 43-foot yacht. For those standing in the galley, the front-facing windows extend the sense of height and space. The L-shape saloon settee folds out to form a berth, and the forward U-shape dinette provides “living room” and “dining room” areas. No matter where you sit, the widows ensure a great view. A 27-inch television is forward, suspended from the overhead and easily seen from the settee, dinette and galley. The cherry finish is well executed and varnished to a mirror-like finish.
Separating the staterooms from the galley and saloon area creates maximum privacy. In the forward guest stateroom, guests will enjoy the queen berth and innerspring mattress, cedar-lined hanging lockers, optional 13-inch TV/VCR and head. Our test boat had optional VacuFlush MSDs. Like the galley, the staterooms benefit from Silverton’s clever use of space. No corner is wasted, and stowage exists for everything from T-shirts to cocktail dresses. An overhead Bomar hatch delivers plenty of light and air.
The master berth is catty-corner on the starboard side, creating plenty of floor space and allowing the berth to be made easily. Our test boat had a 13-inch flip-down LCD screen with video player. When not in use, the screen stows in the overhead. If you don’t choose this option, an entertainment center at the foot of the berth accommodates a 13-inch TV/VCR. The head is split with the vanity between the shower and toilet compartments, a layout customers requested so more than one person can freshen up before a night on the town.
Many aft cabin models are dark and unappealing. On the Silverton, this is not the case. The light cherry finish, neutral fabrics (three color schemes are available) and huge side windows create a light, refreshing atmosphere. An escape hatch is on the after bulkhead.
Below all the frills and condo-like appointments, the 43’s engineroom reveals Silverton’s decades of experience. Systems were easily accessible on our test boat, which had slim, six-cylinder 480 hp Volvo 74 TAMD diesels. Most of the sole is removable, allowing access to the engines for extensive service. A 10kW Kohler generator is nestled into the space and serviceable. Silverton provides a starting battery bank and a house bank. All wiring is color coded and neatly run.
Because of Silverton’s SideWalk design, the 43 Motor Yacht has a high exterior profile. Skippers should take extra care when docking in strong winds. The optional bow thruster ($12,260) is a worthwhile option. SideWalk’s benefit, of course, is that there are no ladders to climb to access the flying bridge. Stairs lead from the afterdeck to the bridge, and side gates lead to the side stairs. While docking the boat with Shea, I found it easy to pop down from the flying bridge to the side decks and handle lines. The feature will surely please parents with younger kids scurrying over the decks. The swim platform, easily accessed via a staircase, includes a shower, mooring cleats and dockside plug-in.
A sunpad with drink holders, a two-station electric Lewmar windlass and an anchor platform take up the foredeck. I would order the afterdeck enclosure ($3,075) to create a second saloon area and a great platform to kick back for brunch on a crisp fall afternoon.
There is additional outdoor living space on the flying bridge, where two L-shape settees are abaft the helm. The distance between the helm and the seat is a little tight. “We’re going to change this on the next hulls and move everything aft,” Shea said.
The 43 is a fun boat to drive. She is whisper quiet and never surpassed 72 decibels on the bridge during our sea trial. She planes easily around 1600 rpm and requires no tab in flat water. Our test boat had power steering and required only a slight finger adjustment to respond. Driving through a few wakes in Government Cut, she was a little tender when smacked by larger broadside seas. This is the compromise of any boat with so much interior volume, although it doesn’t hinder the 43’s role as an all-purpose coastal cruiser.
I couldn’t leave the 43 without taking one more gander through the interior. I caught myself talking to nobody in particular.

Boating Journey
Come along with Scott & Ally on their boating journey in Florida!
Check out this 2000 Silverton 392 MY
This Silverton 392 motor yacht has an awesome layout and really could make for a great live aboard. Scott and I toured this yacht at Union Marine back in November and we were very surprised to see how much space it has.
The owners have put in some custom cutting boards in the cockpit above the refrigerator, which allows for great entertaining on the stern. We love how much open space there is in the cockpit for relaxing.
The Fly Bridge
The fly bridge on this Silverton 392 offers great visibility. One thing I noticed right away (and I think it’s a great idea), is the owner put labels everywhere to help who ever is operating the boat.
We also noticed that on the bridge, there were switches for engine fire extinguishers. How cool is that?!
The Silverton 392 Motor Yacht, with its innovative “SideWalk” flybridge steps, offers much improvement in safety, space utilization, and mobility. Never before has going forward been so easy and so safe.
The Interior
Compared to our Bayliner 4087 , the salon offered much more space for entertaining. You could easily seat 6 or 8 people around the settee. For relaxing at night, the couch was directly across of the tv and it also has a reversible ottoman.
There is tons of storage space under the couch cushions, plus plenty more in the built-in cabinet under the tv.
With the galley just steps away from the salon, you can easily cook and entertain at the same time. There is a lot of storage space and I love that the stove top and oven are electric. Be sure to watch our YouTube episode, for a closeup tour (link at the end of this blog). For some reason, I hate propane ovens/stoves. I know they are the most practical for cruising, but if you are at the dock with shore power, I’ll take electric any day.
Two staterooms
Unlike our Bayliner 4087 that had three staterooms, this Silverton 392 only has two staterooms. However, someone could sleep on the couch, but that wouldn’t offer any privacy. The forward cabin has a double size bed and has plenty of drawers for storage.
There are two heads on this yacht and each has a VacuFlush toilet. The guest head does have a separate shower stall, which is a major plus. On our Bayliner, you had to use a shower curtain in the bathroom when you showered and things still got wet.
The main stateroom is an aft cabin, much like our Bayliner 4087. I feel this cabin is slightly smaller, but Scott disagrees with me. What do you think? I think that our bed was longer than the Silverton making the room bigger?
The main head was a little smaller that I expected, but still offered everything you would need.
The Engine Room
This Silverton 392 MY comes with twin Caterpillar 3116 diesel engines which have a combined 740hp and they only have 150 hours of use! Access to the engine room is in the main salon.
This boat comes with a Kohler Generator and also has an oil change extractor! Super cool, especially if you have ever pumped out your oil manually.
Upgrades also include a WalVac system (a must!!), Inverter and an AB dinghy with a Honda 15hp outboard motor.
Overall Impression
Scott and I were pleasantly surprised by this yacht. It has a great layout, it’s comfortable and comes with many upgrades. While we loved our Bayliner 4087, had we looked at both boats at the same time, chances are we would have picked the Silverton.
Would it make a good liveaboard? Any boat can be a good liveaboard – check out our episode about living on a 32′ Nordic Tug. But in the end, we’re looking for a boat that’s a bit bigger with more storage. If you are looking for a great cruiser for the Northwest, be sure to check out this yacht. You will be impressed.
As always, thank you for following our journey! 2021 has a lot in store for us, including our (hopefully) upcoming bare boat charter on a power catamaran in the British Virgin Islands in April. If we can’t find the perfect liveaboard (or slip to go with it), we may decide to buy a smaller boat just to be able to get back on the water this year. Stay tuned! In the meantime, we hope you all have a fantastic New Year and we hope to see you on the water! See the full tour in the YouTube episode below.
Cheers, Scott and Ally

Silverton 36 C
- By Joe Friedman
- Updated: January 30, 2013
Silverton ‘s 36 C: It’s a cruiser; it’s a sport-fisher. Just pick your options. Great visibility from the bridge of this convertible makes docking, seeing the shallows or spotting fish a breeze. Enlarged accommodations make cruising fun and civilized.
Our test boat boasted twin 315 hp Yanmar inboard diesel engines , an upgrade ($50,617) from the standard 375 hp Crusader gas mills. Easily accessing these via a hatch in the salon sole, I discovered a robust installation and neat rigging, though checking the oil level on the starboard engine proved daunting, yet doable. Yanmar offers the dipstick mounted on either side. I suggest asking about that option.
In light test-day seas, the sprightly 36 C topped out at 30 mph, posting an economical cruising speed of 27.1 mph at 3,000 rpm. Noise levels measured at the bridge, with the optional canvas enclosure ($7,690) erect, were typical for diesel-powered boats of this type, as Boating’s database of boat tests proves. Handling was crisp and responsive under way, and the optional bow thruster ($8,631) enhanced dockside maneuverability, as did big props turning through deep gear ratios. The relatively light displacement and moderate transom deadrise helped to increase fuel economy and decrease draft and dealt with chop admirably on test day.
Silverton offers an impressive list of options for those seeking to mix luxury cruising features with those for serious fishing. The standard boat includes hydraulic steering, 316L stainless hardware, a transom shower, AM/FM stereo, cherry cabinetry and solid doors, plus separate head and shower compartments. The master stateroom features a queen-size island berth with innerspring mattress, and the guest stateroom serves yeoman duty with its six-foot-long upper and lower berths. Besides the aforementioned bridge enclosure and thruster, consider the extended swim platform with ladder ($3,098) and the anchor windlass ($4,656).
The 36 C is billed as a convertible and is an ideal choice for a couple or small family. It is stylish and well thought out and would serve well for extended cruising and occasional trips to the canyon.

Hi,
I'm interested in purchasing either the
Carver 350 Mariner, or, the Silverton 330 Sportbridge, (1998 and later).
Has anyone had any experience with either of
these two boats?
Thanks for any info.
Lou

Re: Carver 350 Mariner vs Silverton 330 Sportbridge i would say they are similar in look. However i owned a carver mariner. and i have had 4 new boats, and 2 of which were carvers, and I am in a dock were they sell both new, The mechanics there will tell you as I will attest too...Carver much better made boat..when it comes to the mariner or the 330. Hull thickness is better on the Carver..workmanship and quality of materials used in my opinion...Thats why the silverton is tens of thousands cheaper to buy....You get what you pay for these days. Also sales on the mariner by carver are 3 to 1 to silverton 330.
Re: Carver 350 Mariner vs Silverton 330 Sportbridge Similar in look only....However the bridge on the sliverton is Tiny in comparison to the mariner...the mariners bridge is huge and the deck rails are higher on the carver...an advantage for people entertaining family's with kids or adults, and in my opinion also the bow can accomodate more adults, and carver has a really cool bow seat (love seat) which converts to a sun lounge. Not to mention the inside of the carver is bigger.

But a silverton is more like a Searay than it is like Viking. Meaning its more of a close to shore cruising style boat, and not an offshore battle wagon. I think they would make a great condo down the shore, if thats what your looking for. As in offshore --- less than 120nm or further.
The 39 Motor Yacht's styling may be challenging to the traditional eye, but the boat is well proportioned and cleverly executed. She will no doubt be as popular as her predecessor, 600 of which were delivered between 1996 and 2001. The 39 is built at Silverton's Millville, New Jersey, production facility.
Not many years ago, these were near $100K boats. The main difference in the older to newer production run is the interior finish. Early boats had teak interior trim, and from 1985 on it was oak. Formica counter top colors evolved from earlier neutral tones to lots of pink in the 1986-1988 years.

It was a perfect day in Ft. Meyers. The sun was shining, a faint breeze wafted across the marina behind the Chart House Restaurant, and the Silverton 35 Motor Yacht was tied alongside a weathered old dock there, nose-out and ready to go. Passing the restaurant, I felt a little thrill of anticipation upon seeing the 35 for the first time, the same thrill I've enjoyed since I was a kid. Whether
Silverton has been building boats in New Jersey since lapstrake sea skiffs were in fashion. When the Luhrs brothers (John and Warren) took the helm in 1969, the company blossomed from a small, regional builder into a major marque. Today, Silverton builds a range of designs focused on family cruising. Even so, in my view the Sport Bridge lineup ...
