Yacht Club de Monaco: more than a yacht club

Home Environment Yacht Club de Monaco: more than a yacht club

Established by Prince Rainier III in 1953, the Yacht Club de Monaco is the emblem of Monegasque yachting. Since 2014, it has had its own emblematic building, a striking piece of architecture by Britain’s Norman Foster.

With its sleek lines and architecture reminiscent of an ocean liner, the Yacht Club de Monaco’s headquarters building never fails to provoke a reaction. Officially unveiled in 2014, it was designed by Pritzker Prize winner Norman Foster.

“This building has been designed like a miniature city, integrated into the existing urban landscape of Monaco,” explains the architect, who was also behind the Millennium Bridge (2000), Millau Viaduct (2004), Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona (2007) and Vieux Port in Marseille (2013).

Chaired since 1984 by Prince Albert II , the Yacht Club de Monaco, with its 2,000 members representing 60 nationalities and prestigious yachts , illustrates Monaco’s historic role in the world of yachting .

The first regattas organised in the Principality date back to 1862, while the first international motorboat races – which arrived with the development of the first combustion engines – were contested in Port Hercule in 1904.

Today, the Yacht Club de Monaco organises a number of regattas, such as Monaco Classic Week, the Primo Cup and, more recently, the Monaco Solar and Energy Boat Challenge One.

“As part of our ‘Monaco, capital of yachting’ project, through this event the Principality helps to bring together manufacturers, engineers, shipyards, students and ship owners to share their experiences and respond to the energy and environmental challenges facing the nautical sector,” says Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco.

The YCM has two influential ambassadors: Le Tuiga, considered by sailor Eric Tabarly to be “one of the most beautiful yachts in the world”, takes part in major classic yacht events, while the Seaexplorer (formerly Malizia II) , the eco-friendly vessel that took Greta Thunberg across the Atlantic in summer 2019 to attend the UN Climate Summit, finished fifth in the Vendée Globe 2020, the first time it has taken part in the race.

Text description provided by the architects. The yacht club is the symbolic centrepiece of the Monaco's remodelled harbour front. It celebrates the principality's spectacular coastline and its nautical heritage, creating a series of deck-like terraces that step up along the harbour to offer unrivalled views out to races at sea or inland over the course of the renowned Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit. Located on an area of reclaimed land, the development extends the city's existing marina eastwards and can accommodate a range of craft, from sailing boats to 100-metre super yachts.

The club is entered via a glazed atrium that frames views out over the harbour to the palace. On the first floor are a clubroom, bar and restaurant

Above is a double-height function space, and above that an apartment for the club secretary and a series of 'cabins' for visiting guests. The uppermost floors accommodate a range of event spaces. The observation decks are shaded by retractable fabric screens supported by a mast and booms. The harbour elevations are fully glazed and shaded by louvres, and can be opened up to provide uninterrupted views. Photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels and sea-water cooling systems have all been integrated to ensure the building sets new sustainability standards, in line with Monaco's environmental ambitions.

The scheme also introduces shops and other amenities at quay level to animate the harbour.

The lower floors accommodate a rowing club and sailing school, whose sliding doors encourage activities to spread out on to the quayside. Designed largely for children, the school provides classrooms, workshops and lofts for small boats. Inland, there is a landscaped park on the roof of the sailing school and nautical society. Bounded on one side by the club's restaurant terrace and leading on the other side to a new exhibition hall, it complements the sequence of green spaces in this densely populated city and forms a new link in the pedestrian route between the quayside and Casino Square.

The Ferretti Group, the luxury yacht builder and brokerage conglomerate, recently held its annual Private Preview event at the Yacht Club de Monaco. The glamourous evening, which serves as a showcase of the group’s latest and greatest creations, was headlined by British music legend Robbie Williams.

Ahead of the Monaco Yacht Show later this month, the Ferretti Group offered key stakeholders an exclusive insight into its new range of luxury vessels at its annual Private Preview at the Yacht Club de Monaco on 7 th September.

Guests were treated to onboard visits and sea trials of seven world-premiere boats, among them the Custom Line Navetta 38, Pershing GTX80, Ferretti Yachts Infynito 80 and the Riva El-Iseo, the brand’s first fully electric powerboat.

They also enjoyed an elegant dinner prepared by Michelin-starred chef Antonio Mellino of the Amalfi Coast restaurant Quattro Passi di Nerano, and were gifted an array of luxury souvenirs of the evening by the partners of the event, a prestigious list of brands including the likes of Range Rover, Bang & Olufsen and Dolce & Gabbana.

Prince Albert II of Monaco was among those who turned out for the industry event, alongside Formula 1’s Charles Leclerc and Nico Rosberg, and Domenico Dolce of Dolce & Gabbana.

Later in the evening, top-selling solo artist Robbie Williams took to a purpose-built stage that was suspended above the water of Port Hercule to perform for the VIP crowd of over 600 guests, who packed out every deck and balcony of the iconic building.

“A big thank you to Robbie Williams for the style and extraordinary talent with which he won the hearts of our guests and friends,” said Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi after the show. “He entertains his audience with incredible joy and generosity… perfectly in tune with the passion Ferretti Group brings to the creation of ever-more beautiful dream boats.”

Where elegance and yachting combine, the yacht club is one of the most exclusive places in Monaco. The building, whose shape is reminiscent of a ship, houses luxurious lounges, theatres for prestigious ceremonies, private parties and other official presentations. A nautical club founded in 1953, it has nearly 1600 members and brings together owners of classic and modern boats, motor-yachts as well as recreational and regatta sailboats. The club has been chaired by Prince Albert II since 1984.

In 2005, the President of the club launched the “La Belle Classe” label, to unite shipowners around a Charter, defending essential values: respect for etiquette, protection of the environment, preservation of the heritage of classic yachts and innovation for superyachts.

Then, on 20 June 2014, the Yacht Club began a new venture, with the opening of its new Club House, in a building approved by Lord Norman Foster. This showcase of Monégasque Yachting has encouraged – in accordance with the Sovereign’s wishes – the creation of the “Yachting Monaco” Cluster and “La Belle Classe Academy”. The latter is a training centre specialising in super yachting.

TURIN, Italy, Sept. 13, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — For the 4th consecutive year, the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous will take place on the 22 and 23 September 2024 at Yacht Club de Monaco. Organized by Monaco Marina Management (M3), this networking event will gather 250+ delegates including entrepreneurs, industrialists, investors, promoters and marina developers from all over the world. “The creativity, engagement, solutions and expertise of participants is absolutely essential if we want to design the marinas of tomorrow”, says José Marco Casellini, CEO of M3. With 29 nationalities represented, the event illustrates a global commitment to infrastructures adapted to climate issues. For this 4th edition, projects in favour of sustainable marinas are available on the official website: www.sustainablesmartmarina.com/e-catalogue-2024 . The E-catalogue features a selection of startups and scaleups, a dozen architecture firms, nearly 30 students working in the sector, as well as a dozen marinas.

4th monaco smart & sustainable marina rendezvous: monaco fosters synergies back to video.

Delegates can discover and test the latest innovations from startups and scaleups in the exhibition area and attend round tables at three conferences, which will explore how technology, the banking sector and architecture can transform marinas. The two networking days are open to all professionals. This year, a call for proposals invites architects and students to design an innovative floating marina for ecologically sensitive areas. The jury is chaired by Zaha Hadid Architects, with the valuable and consistent participation of architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte and yacht designer Dan Lenard. The implementation of a floating marina project embodies a strategic response to contemporary environmental and infrastructural challenges while leveraging innovation for sustainable coastal development. At the end of two intense days of exchanges and networking, the International Smart & Sustainable Marina Awards will be presented on Monday 23rd September at 4.00pm to winners in three categories: Startups & Scaleups, Marinas and Architects (Professional & Student).

Following on from the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous earlier this year and convinced of the need for a 360° sustainable approach, the organizers continue to develop the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous. “As in the automobile industry, where infrastructure has to adapt to new generation vehicles, yachting must integrate technological innovations to meet the needs of tomorrow’s yachts,” stresses Bernard d’Alessandri, President of Cluster Yachting Monaco and YCM’s General Secretary. “Without suitable infrastructure and facilities, it will be difficult for us to move the sector forward together. It is essential to mobilize all stakeholders, from yacht designers to marina managers, to ensure a transition to smarter, more sustainable yachting”. As part of the collective approach of ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ this meeting is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Principality’s Digital Transition Programme, Extended Monaco implemented by the Monaco Government, along with UBS, MB92 Group and Bombardier.
