There's Something Unbelievably Strange About That Billionaire Yacht Sinking

This is stranger than fiction..

As billionaire Mike Lynch's yacht sinking made headlines, the missing tycoon's recent fraud trial co-defendant died in a UK hospital after being hit by a car.

As the  BBC reports , the former vice president of finance at Lynch's enterprise software firm Autonomy Stephen Chamberlain was declared dead on Monday after a car hit him when he was out on a run in Cambridgeshire, the county where England's tony Cambridge University is located.

Earlier that very day, a yacht said to be owned by Lynch's wife Angela Bacares called the Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily after being struck by a water-bound tornado. As Business Insider reports , the Autonomy founder, his 18-year-old daughter, his fraud trial attorney Christopher Morvillo, and the lawyer's wife are now all missing and feared dead following the crash.

Bacares and several other people were rescued by a nearby vessel that, as ABC noted , did not suffer the same fate in the storm.

As Italian civil protection lead Salvo Cocina said during a media conference quoted by ABC , the Bayesian was "in the wrong place at the wrong time" — an apt analysis that seems to have applied to Chamberlain as well.

Twisted Fate

As the BBC and other outlets reported in the wake of his untimely death note, Chamberlain had along with Lynch been accused of 11 counts of fraud related to the sale of Autonomy to Hewlett Packard in 2011. Earlier this summer, the pair were acquitted on all those charges — only for tragedy to strike just a few months later.

Before either man met their more recent doom, they'd been considered incredibly lucky, as the Daily Beast reports , to have been acquitted at all.

Months prior to their own fraud trial, Lynch's right-hand man, ex-Autonomy chief financial officer Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of similar charges and ended up being sanctioned in the United Kingdom . Until their acquittal, the still-missing billionaire was sure that if he met the same fate as Hussain, he'd end up dying in prison.

"I have various medical things that would have made it very difficult to survive," Lynch told The Guardian last month, following the acquittal. "If this had gone the wrong way, it would have been the end of life as I have known it in any sense."

With Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter now among the missing in the Bayesian sinking and Chamberlain dead, their acquittal earlier this summer has taken on a darker tone.

"In the course of 48 hours, I can’t process what has happened," explained Lynch's other attorney, Gary Lindberg, in an interview with BI , "but both of our clients, as well as Chris and his wife, are gone."

How did the superyacht carrying tech tycoon Mike Lynch sink off Sicily?

Lynch’s was among five bodies retrieved by divers on Wednesday after the Bayesian sank, according to reports.

Divers operate in the sea to search for the missing after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily

Five bodies were retrieved on Wednesday, and a sixth on Friday , by divers searching for those missing from the superyacht which sank off the Sicilian coast in the Mediterranean. The bodies found include British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , the UK’s Telegraph reported. The bodies have not been formally identified by the authorities yet.

It is understood that they were retrieved from inside the sunken yacht, which is reported to be lying on its side on the sea bed at a depth of 50 metres

This brings the total death toll to seven; one person, reported to be the chef from the yacht, was confirmed dead on Monday.

The yacht capsized on Monday at about 5am (03:00 GMT) after it was hit by stormy weather caused by a “waterspout” – or mini tornado – according to Italian authorities.

The cruise had reportedly been undertaken to celebrate the acquittal of Lynch in a fraud trial in the United States in June.

His co-defendant in the trial, Steve Chamberlain, who was also acquitted in June, was killed after being hit by a car on Saturday.

Here’s what is known so far about the yacht, those on board and who died or were still missing after it sank.

rescue

Who was on the superyacht which sank?

According to the Italian coastguard, the 56-metre-long (184 feet) British-flagged yacht, called the Bayesian, was carrying 22 people, including 10 crew members.

One person has been confirmed dead after rescuers located a body on Monday at a depth of about 50 metres (164 feet), the AFP news agency reported. Officials have not yet given the name of the deceased but Italian media reported that he was the yacht’s chef.

AFP reported on Tuesday that divers had spotted a second body inside the sunk boat, quoting a source close to the search operation. Authorities have not confirmed it yet, though.

While not all the names of the six missing passengers were not made public officially, they were understood to include:

  • Mike Lynch, 59, a British-Irish technology businessman who co-founded British tech company Autonomy in 1996 and was once likened to Microsoft founder Bill Gates; he earned a PhD from Cambridge University
  • Hannah Lynch, 18, Mike’s daughter, who had just completed her final school exams and was due to begin a degree in English at the University of Oxford this September
  • Jonathan Bloomer, the 70-year-old British chairman of Morgan Stanley bank and the Hiscox insurance company, was confirmed as missing by Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain
  • Judy Bloomer, Jonathan’s wife, was also confirmed as missing by Hussain
  • Chris Morvillo, from British international law firm Clifford Chance, was confirmed to be missing by Salvatore Cocina, head of the Civil Protection in Sicily

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, were rescued. Among others rescued were Charlotte Golunski, 36, a board director at Luminance, a software startup founded by Lynch; her husband, James; and their one-year-old daughter, Sophie. Golunski is understood to have kept her daughter alive by holding her above her head while she was in the water.

All those rescued are in stable condition, although eight of them have been hospitalised, according to Italian news agency Adnkronos.

What do we know about the Bayesian?

Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi constructed the superyacht in 2008 and refitted it in 2020, according to the company’s website.

The yacht’s owner is listed as Revtom Limited, a firm solely owned by Lynch’s wife, Bacares, according to company documents seen by the Reuters news agency.

It was formerly called Salute but was renamed Bayesian after Lynch’s PhD thesis and his software that earned him a fortune. Both of these were based on the statistical Bayesian theory, championed by mathematician Thomas Bayes.

Where was the Bayesian last seen and where was it going?

The Bayesian was last located on Sunday evening in the Tyrrhenian Sea, east of the harbour at Porticello, according to ship tracking websites Vessel Finder and Marine Traffic.

Porticello is a port city located near the Sicilian capital, Palermo.

The yacht had departed on August 14 from the Sicilian port of Milazzo. Its destination was reported to be the Italian city of Bagheria by the tracking websites.

Did a waterspout cause the yacht to sink?

Italian authorities reported that the stormy conditions that caused the yacht to sink were triggered by a waterspout.

A waterspout is a rotating column of whirling air and water mist – sometimes referred to as a mini tornado – according to the website of the US National Ocean Service.

The website adds that a tornadic waterspout is a tornado that forms over water or moves from land to water. They are similar to land tornadoes and can occur during thunderstorms.

Who is Stephen Chamberlain and how is he connected to this case?

Chamberlain, 52, was Lynch’s co-defendant in a fraud trial in San Francisco, which saw both men acquitted in June.

Chamberlain died in a hospital from injuries sustained when he was hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, on Saturday. His death was confirmed by his lawyer Gary Lincenberg in a statement on Monday.

The fraud case related to Hewlett Packard’s $11bn acquisition of Autonomy, the firm Lynch grew into the UK’s leading tech company before it spectacularly unravelled after being bought by HP in 2011.

Lynch was extradited to the US in May 2023 and he spent more than a year under house arrest before his acquittal. Chamberlain was the former vice president of finance at Autonomy.

The yacht trip was supposedly a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal.

How did the rescue operation unfold?

Specialist divers began a search anew for the six missing people on Tuesday. Three divers, equipped with oxygen cylinders, descended beneath the surface to examine the wreck.

They initially faced difficulty accessing the yacht’s chambers because they were constricted by furniture.

An investigation into the wreck has been opened by prosecutors in the nearby Sicilian town of Termini Imerese.

What have survivors and witnesses said about the incident?

“It was terrible. The boat was hit by really strong wind and shortly after it went down,” survivor Golunski told the ANSA news agency.

She added that she had lost hold of her one-year-old daughter in the water for “two seconds”, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety. She reported that people were screaming.

Karsten Borner, a captain of a nearby yacht who witnessed the sinking, said he had turned on the engine of his ship to prevent collision with the Bayesian. “We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” he told reporters.

Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is a trustee of the Eve Appeal, a UK-based gynaecological cancer research charity. Athena Lamnisos, the CEO of the Eve Appeal, was quoted by the BBC saying she was “deeply shocked to hear the news that our very dear friend and her husband Jonathan, are among those missing”.

Fact check: What the Obamas and other Democratic speakers got right, wrong on Day 2 of the DNC

Former president barack obama and former first lady michelle obama energized convention attendees. here are some fact checks of their claims..

destination yachts jobs

CHICAGO —  Two decades after exploding onto the political scene at a different Democratic convention, former President Barack Obama, along with former first lady Michelle Obama, energized convention attendees here. The Obamas bestowed their support on nominee Kamala Harris, who aims to follow Obama as the nation’s second Black president.

Barack Obama began his address by praising outgoing President Joe Biden. “I am proud to call him my president, but I am even prouder to call him my friend,” Obama said of Biden, his former vice president.

Obama attacked Harris’ opponent, former President Donald Trump with zingers, once needling Trump for a “ weird obsession with crowd sizes ” (which also involved a suggestive hand gesture).

Barack Obama offered a few notes that rhymed with his career-making 2004 keynote address at the Democratic convention in Boston, in which he argued against the idea that there is a blue America and a red America.

Michelle Obama’s speech also offered some optimistic notes, including the notion that “hope is making a comeback” with Harris’ late entry into the presidential race as Biden’s would-be successor. But the former first lady’s remarks were sometimes even more acerbic than her husband’s.

She said, for example, that Trump had benefited from the “affirmative action of generational wealth” yet still managed to get “a second, third or fourth chance” while regularly “whining” or “cheating.” She also criticized Trump — an early spreader of the “birther” conspiracy theory that doubted that Obama was born in the U.S. — for having made Americans “fear us” as an educated, high-achieving couple who “happen to be Black.”

PolitiFact fact-checks politicians across the political spectrum. We also fact-checked the  Republican National Convention  in July.  Read more about our process.

Here are some fact-checks of claims made during the convention’s second night.

Barack Obama: Under Joe Biden, the U.S. produced “15 million jobs, higher wages, lower health care costs.”

He’s right about jobs: The U.S. has  added 15.8 million jobs  since January 2021, when Biden was sworn in, though some of those represented the workforce return of workers the pandemic had sidelined.

Wages are up under Biden without factoring in inflation. But for his full tenure, wages have  trailed inflation , which hit a four-decade high under Biden. Nevertheless, wages have outpaced inflation over the past two years, the past year and compared with before the pandemic.

Whether health care costs were lower overall is a trickier question, because there’s great variation from family to family and person to person. However, U.S. health care expenditures as a percentage of gross domestic product peaked during the pandemic in 2020 and have  since fallen  roughly to prepandemic levels. This represented the biggest sustained decline in decades.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.: “Unemployment was soaring” when Biden and Harris took office in January 2021.

Mostly False.

Sanders overstated the unemployment situation when Biden and Harris were inaugurated.

In April 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the unemployment rate surged to 14.8% as millions of Americans lost their jobs.

But by the time Biden took office in January 2021, the rate had fallen to 6.4%, and it continued to fall that year.

So it wasn’t “soaring” any longer, though the rate was still high by historical standards. It was lower than 6.4% for about six years prepandemic.

July’s unemployment rate is 4.3%.

Project 2025

Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Philadelphia: “And on Page 587, Project 2025 would cut overtime pay for hardworking Americans.”

Labor law experts have told PolitiFact  that the Project 2025 plan would not eliminate overtime pay, but some workers could lose overtime protections if the plan’s proposals are enacted. It’s hard to say how many; it would depend on what’s enacted.

The document proposes that the Labor Department maintain an overtime threshold “that does not punish businesses in lower-cost regions (e.g., the southeast United States).” This threshold is the amount of money executive, administrative or professional employees need to make for an employer to exempt them from overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

In 2019, the Trump administration  finalized a rule  that expanded overtime pay eligibility to most salaried workers earning less than about $35,568. The Biden administration  raised that threshold  to $43,888 beginning July 1, and that will rise to $58,656 on Jan. 1, 2025.

Project 2025’s proposal would return to the Trump-era threshold in some parts of the country. It’s unclear how many workers that would affect, but experts said some would presumably lose the right to overtime wages.

Other proposals in the plan include allowing some workers to choose to accumulate paid time off instead of overtime pay, to work more hours in one week and fewer in the next rather than receive overtime,,and require employers to pay overtime for working on the Sabbath.

Former first lady Michelle Obama: One of Trump’s proposals is “shutting down the Department of Education.”

Trump has said he would  abolish the Education Department , a proposal  he shares with Project 2025 , an agenda independently produced by some Trump allies.

It’s also something conservative groups have pushed for decades. The idea is to save a few essential functions and hand them to other agencies.

Trump’s education agenda also includes universal school choice, not spending federal dollars on schools that have vaccine mandates, allowing prayer in school, making principals directly elected by voters, subsidizing homeschooling and abolishing tenure for K-12 teachers.

Health Care

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.: “Democrats lowered prescription drug prices.”

Mostly True.

The Democrats did take historic steps to lower prices for Medicare recipients, but that’s a limited group of people and for many drugs that will take time.

In August 2022,  Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act,  which allows the federal government to negotiate prices with drugmakers for Medicare. It passed without Republican support. The same law  capped  the monthly price of insulin at $35 for Medicare enrollees starting in 2023.

The Biden-Harris administration  announced  Aug. 15 that the federal government had reached agreements with all participating manufacturers on new negotiated drug prices for the first 10 drugs selected under the new law.

That will define the prices to be paid for prescriptions starting in 2026. For 2027 and 2028, 15 more drugs per year will be chosen for price negotiations. Starting in 2029, 20 more will be chosen a year.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham: Donald Trump and J.D. Vance want to “repeal the Affordable Care Act.”

Half True .

Trump’s new position doesn’t match his old one, but more details are needed.

In 2016, Trump campaigned on a promise to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. As president, Trump supported a failed effort to do just that. In the years since, he has repeatedly stated his intent to dismantle the health care law, including in campaign stops and social media posts throughout 2023.

In March, however, Trump walked back this stance. He wrote on Truth Social that he “isn’t running to terminate” the ACA but to make it “better” and “less expensive.”

Trump hasn’t said how he would do this, and health care policy experts said it’s difficult to know where he stands without a detailed plan. Experts identified an array of possible changes that could be executed under another Trump administration but said a sweeping repeal likely isn’t in the cards given a lack of political support.

Childhood Poverty

Sanders: “We cut childhood poverty by over 40% through an expanded child tax credit.”

Biden’s American Rescue Plan increased the child tax credit from $2,000 to $3,600 for children younger than 6 and to $3,000 for children 6 to 17.

We  previously reported  that supplemental poverty numbers showed poverty among all U.S. children dropped from 9.7% in 2020 to 5.2% in 2021, the Census Bureau said — a decline of 46%. About 5.3 million people were lifted out of poverty, including 2.9 million children.

The provision lapsed after December 2021, facing opposition from Republicans and Sen. Joe Manchin, now an independent, who argued that expanding the credit would worsen inflation.

When the expanded tax credit expired, supplemental child poverty  spiked , rising from 12.1% in December 2021 to 17% in January 2022 — a 41% change.

Kamala Harris in a DNC video: Trump “wants to impose what is in effect a national sales tax on everyday products and basic necessities that we import from other countries. … (it) would cost a typical family $3,900 a year.”

Trump has said that  he would propose a 10% tariff on all nondomestic goods sold  in the U.S. Although tariffs are levied separately from taxes, economists say that much of their impact would be passed along to consumers, making them analogous to a tax.

The video’s figure about how much it will cost families is higher than current estimates.

The American Action Forum, a center-right think tank, has  projected  additional costs per household of $1,700 to $2,350 annually.

The Peterson Institute of International Economics, another Washington, D.C.-based think tank,  projected  that such tariffs would cost a middle-income household about $1,700 extra each year.

PolitiFact chief correspondent Louis Jacobson, senior correspondent Amy Sherman, staff writers Samantha Putterman, Sara Swann, Loreben Tuquero and Maria Ramirez Uribe contributed to this story.

Our convention fact-checks rely on both new and previously reported work. We link to past work whenever possible. In some cases, a fact-check rating may be different tonight than in past versions. In those cases, either details of what the candidate said, or how the candidate said it, differed enough that we evaluated it anew.

This fact check was originally published by PolitiFact , which is part of the Poynter Institute.

News Wrap: Golan Heights damaged by Hezbollah rocket attack on Israel

  • Copy URL https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/news-wrap-golan-heights-damaged-by-hezbollah-rocket-attack-on-israel

In our news wrap Wednesday, Hezbollah fired more than 50 rockets toward Israel, Congo health authorities reported more than 1,000 mpox cases in the last week, divers recovered five more bodies from the luxury yacht that sank off Sicily’s coast, Russia says Ukraine launched a large drone attack on Moscow, and revised data showed the U.S. economy added fewer jobs than previously reported.

Read the Full Transcript

Notice: Transcripts are machine and human generated and lightly edited for accuracy. They may contain errors.

William Brangham:

Hezbollah fired more than 50 rockets towards Israel today, some causing damage in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. Israel's ambulance service reported the projectiles hit several private homes and injured one person, causing alarm among community members.

Einav Perez, Golan Heights Resident (through interpreter):

Some of the residents want to leave. Others are patriots who want to stay. But it cannot continue this way. Every sound of a door shutting makes us think it's a boom. This time, it wasn't a door, but a serious boom that cost us a lot.

Hezbollah says the barrage was in response to Israeli airstrikes deep inside Lebanon.

Residents of one Lebanese village held a funeral today for a man they say was killed in an Israeli attack. It comes a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with mediators in the region to push a proposal aimed at bridging the gaps in the Gaza cease-fire talks. Egyptian officials reportedly expressed skepticism today that Hamas would in fact accept that proposal. Talks are expected to resume in Cairo tomorrow.

Health authorities in Congo say they have recorded more than 1,000 mpox cases in the last week amid an urgent need for vaccines. Congo accounts for more than 90 percent of the cases reported in Africa so far this year. Last week, the WHO classified the outbreak as a global health emergency.

African officials say Western nations in Japan have pledged several hundred thousand vaccine doses, but Congo's health minister says the country alone needs some three million doses to control the outbreak.

In Italy, divers found five more bodies while searching the luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday. Recovery crews unloaded body bags from a rescue vessel in Porticello. They're still searching for one final missing person. Fifteen other passengers and crew escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued.

Authorities say they believe the British-flagged Bayesian, seen here in file video, was struck by a tornado on the water, which is known as a water spout. But questions remain as to why the yacht sank so quickly.

Russian officials say that Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow last night since Russia's invasion in 2022. Russia claims to have struck down 45 drones, including 11 over Moscow itself. There has been no independent verification of those figures.

That comes as Ukraine digs in to defend the city of Pokrovsk in Eastern Ukraine from Russian advances. Its capture would be an important victory for Russia, as Ukraine pushes forward with its own incursion further north in Russia's Kursk region.

In Moscow today, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Ukraine's military advances there undermine any chances for peace talks.

Maria Zakharova, Spokeswoman, Russian Foreign Ministry (through interpreter):

Who will negotiate with them after this, after the atrocities, the terror that they are committing against peaceful residents, the civilian population, infrastructure and peaceful facilities?

Ukraine's military claims to have taken nearly 500 square miles in Kursk since it first entered Russian territory earlier this month.

Back here in the U.S., the economy added far fewer jobs last year and into 2024 than previously reported. In its revised data out today, the Labor Department said that there were 818,000 fewer jobs created between April of last year and this March. That's an average of 174,000 jobs per month, far fewer than the 242,000 that was initially reported. This downgrade follows a disappointing report last month and comes as the U.S. Federal Reserve considers whether to cut interest rates next month.

On Wall Street today, stocks ended slightly higher after the Fed raised hopes of an interest rate cut next month. The Dow Jones industrial average added 55 points, inching closer to the 41000-point level. The Nasdaq tacked on more than 100 points for a ninth win in 10 sessions. The S&P 500 also ended higher on the day.

And we have two passings of note.

New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. Died earlier this morning. The 14-term Democrat was a fixture of his hometown of Paterson, where he had served as mayor, before running for Congress in 1996. Pascrell was a long time advocate for emergency responders and sat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. No cause of death has been announced, but he had been in and out of the hospital for months.

Congressman Bill Pascrell was 87 years old.

Also today, NBA Hall of Famer Al Attles has died. As one of the first Black head coaches in the league, Attles led the Golden State warriors to a championship in 1975. Attles, seen here defending a pass in 1963, was known as the Destroyer for his particularly physical style of play.

He spent six decades with the Warriors as a player, a general manager, and team ambassador. It is the longest stint by a player with the same franchise in NBA history. Al Attles was 87 years old.

With Freight Off the Rails, Rare Open Tracks for Passenger Trains

The brief lockout of freight railway workers gave Via Rail Canada trains a temporary reprieve from their second-class status.

Ian Austen

By Ian Austen

If anyone benefited from the short lockout at the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City railways this week, it might have been passengers on most Via Rail Canada trains.

[ Read: Canadian Government Orders Arbitration and End to Rail Freight Shutdown ]

[ Read: What a Prolonged Rail Shutdown in Canada Would Mean for Trade ]

A tall sign reading “Via Rail Canada.”

The lockout on Thursday was not quite 17 hours old when Steve MacKinnon, the federal labor minister, said he had told the Canada Industrial Relations Board to formally order the railways to restart service and to impose a contract through binding arbitration. He predicted that trains on the two freight railways would be running again within days.

Exactly how many days was still fuzzy on Friday afternoon. The union representing the 10,000 workers, the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, has said it opposes arbitration. It also filed a formal notice with Canadian National that it intended to go on strike against that railway on Monday and that it was keeping lockout pickets in place.

With the exception of one route in Northern Ontario, however, it’s been business as usual for Via. Its trains largely travel on Canadian National’s track as well as the comparatively small sections of track it owns near Ottawa and Windsor, Ontario.

Unlike their counterparts at Canadian Pacific Kansas City, the dispatchers who control the traffic along Canadian National’s rails are covered on a different contract and remained at work.

The lack of freight trains on the rails eased, at least temporarily, the single biggest factor when it comes to keeping Via’s trains on time. In the United States, federal law requires that Amtrak passenger trains be given preference over freight trains when running on freight railways’ tracks. (However, the United States Justice Department recently charged one of the largest freight lines in the country with illegally delaying passenger trains .)

Parliament did not give Via any such status. While weather, accidents and mechanical issues play roles, the most consistent factor behind delays on Via is the need for its trains to pull over and wait to allow freight trains to pass. Last year, just 59 percent of Via’s trains were on time. (Air Canada was not dramatically better: 63 percent of flights were on time last year.)

The latest scheme for improving train service between Windsor and Quebec City involves adding separate rails for passenger trains. And while the government is carefully avoiding comparing VIA HFR , the proposed passenger-only project, to high-speed trains in Europe and Asia, such a project would also increase train speeds. The new trains Via Rail is now rolling out, for example, have a top speed of 200 kilometers an hour but are limited to 160 k.p.h. on the current tracks.

The project’s initials stand for High-Frequency Rail — the idea being that frequent, relatively fast and reliable trains will lure passengers out of cars and planes, but at a significantly lower, if still multibillion-dollar, cost compared with high-speed trains.

VIA HFR is technically a subsidiary of VIA Rail and, as a result, owned by the government. But its spokesman told me that the two companies operate at arm’s length and that VIA HFR has complete authority over the new project.

VIA HFR would largely privatize rail travel along the 1,000-kilometer route that now accounts for 96 percent of Via’s passengers and 82 percent of its ticket revenue. It has asked three groups of companies to submit proposals to build the line and then operate and partly own the train system. Its land and infrastructure would remain under government ownership.

Last month, on the deadline day for proposals, Air Canada announced that it was joining a group that includes AtkinsRéalis Canada, the engineering and construction company that previously called itself SNC-Lavalin, and an infrastructure management and construction company owned by the Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec, the province’s pension fund.

It was something of a surprise given Air Canada’s vigorous past opposition to any passenger rail network improvements.

Beyond a brief statement , Air Canada has said little about the change in its thinking. It did not respond to my questions about its newfound interest in rail.

It is common in many countries for airline tickets to cover rail connections to the passenger’s final destination. Air Canada itself sells them to European cities.

Linking trains and planes can be more efficient and convenient than putting passengers on short-haul flights. The reduction in direct flights from Ottawa since the pandemic means that I now frequently connect in Montreal. In my experience, the absurdly short connecting flight back to Ottawa is often delayed, sometimes for longer than even a particularly slow train would take to complete the leg.

Jacques Roy, a professor at the HEC Montréal business school, has researched high-speed rail for decades and once wrote a study for the provincial government about linking it with air travel. When I asked him if it was necessary to have airline ownership of rail services to integrate planes and trains at airports, his answer was blunt: “No.”

Worse, he said, such a dynamic creates the possibility that Air Canada will block other airlines from integrating their flights with the new trains. In Europe, he said, “there’s no exclusivity.”

Transport Action Canada, a public transportation group that advocates the interests of passengers, goes further. It doesn’t want any Air Canada involvement in the new project.

“We are very supportive of good railway connections at airports,” Terry Johnson, the group’s president told me. “You just don’t have to have an airline own it.”

Hiscox Ltd. issued a statement confirming that the insurer’s chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and Bloomer’s wife, Judy, died in the tragic sinking of the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily on Monday, Aug. 19.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by Jonathan and Judy’s tragic deaths. Our deepest sympathies go out to their family and friends at this devastating time,” according to Aki Hussain, Hiscox Group CEO, in a statement.

“It was a privilege to have known Jonathan and to have benefited from his generosity and wisdom over the last year in his role as chair of Hiscox,” Hussain continued.

“His deep experience across our industry and in the broader business arena, combined with his personal values, made him both an excellent chair and a person I was proud to know and work with. His advice and support were immensely valuable to me, and he will be dearly missed,” he said.

Bloomer was also a non-executive chair at Morgan Stanley International .

In addition to Bloomer and his wife, the other fatalities were British tech magnate Mike Lynch; a Clifford Chance solicitor, Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo; and the vessel’s onboard chef, Recaldo Thomas. The body of last missing person, Lynch’s daughter, was recovered on Friday, Aug. 23.

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife, survived the accident. There had been 22 passengers and crew on board the yacht Bayesian, which was named for a British mathematician.

Final body found in Sicily yacht wreckage is Hannah Lynch, official says

The 18-year-old daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch was the last passenger missing from Monday’s sinking of the Bayesian.

Key takeaways

Summary is AI-generated, newsroom-reviewed.

  • Hannah Lynch, 18, is last body recovered from sunken yacht Bayesian
  • Hannah was the daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch who died in the disaster
  • Yacht sank in storm Monday near Porticello, Italy
  • 15 rescued, including Mike Lynch’s wife

ROME — The final body has been retrieved from the wreckage of a sunken yacht off Sicily, authorities said Friday, bringing to seven the number of people who died in the disaster.

“I can confirm it to you, the last victim inside the hull has been found,” said Cosimo Nicastro, a spokesman for the Italian coast guard.

Nicastro did not confirm the identity of the final body, but a senior Italian government official told The Washington Post that it has been confirmed to be that of Hannah Lynch, the teenage daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who also died. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity in keeping with protocol.

Hannah Lynch, 18, was the last passenger missing since the Bayesian sank in a storm of the northern coast of Sicily on Monday.

Mike Lynch’s body was recovered from the wreckage of the 183-foot yacht on Thursday. The British-flagged vessel was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members when it encountered what authorities called a “violent storm” about 4 a.m. Monday, roughly half a mile off the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello. It sank to a depth of more than 160 feet.

“The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends. Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy,” a spokesperson for the Lynch family said in a statement. “They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue. Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.”

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife and Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares, were rescued shortly after the Bayesian sank. The body of the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered during initial search efforts.

Four bodies were pulled from the wreckage Wednesday. They were identified as those of two couples: Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; Judy Bloomer, a charity trustee; Chris Morvillo, a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance in New York; and Neda Morvillo, a jeweler.

Friends of Hannah Lynch, paid tribute to a “warm and beautiful soul” and called her loss “unbearable.”

“Being with Hannah made me feel whole and happy. She is the most special friend anyone could ask for,” said her friend Katya Lewis, in a statement provided by the Lynch family’s representatives.

Hannah was “sincere, dedicated, fiercely intelligent and genuinely kind. I’ll always remember her smiling,” said Gracie Lea, her classmate at Latymer Upper School in London, which she attended.

Her teacher Jon Mitropoulos-Monk said Hannah “combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm.” He said Hannah “devoured” works of English literature, scoring high marks in her national exams, and had been due to attend the University of Oxford to study English, “a goal she had worked so hard towards.”

“I taught Hannah for four years. I will remember her for what she taught me: kindness, compassion and commitment,” he added.

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Bacares, and several of the passengers had business or legal ties to Lynch. Morvillo represented Lynch in a recently concluded legal battle. The voyage was intended to be a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal in the United States of fraud charges, Britain’s Telegraph newspaper has reported .

Lynch, 59, co-founded Autonomy, once Britain’s largest software company, and the cybersecurity firm Darktrace, among other ventures.

He sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion, but was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and charged by the United States with fraud. He was acquitted on all counts by a federal court in San Francisco in June.

Divers from the Italian fire brigade have been working daily since Monday to recover the bodies, but the position of the yacht, and its narrow and cluttered passages, complicated the effort.

Steve Jobs' former yacht Venus collided with another superyacht off the coast of Naples

  • Venus, the yacht built for Steve Jobs , collided with another yacht off Italy's coast.
  • It's unclear which yacht struck which or when exactly the crash occurred.
  • With a minimalist design, Venus is one of the world's most iconic superyachts.

Insider Today

Venus, Steve Jobs' former superyacht — now owned by his wife, the philanthropist and investor Laurene Powell Jobs — has collided with another superyacht off of the Italian coast.

A spokesperson from Powell Jobs' Emerson Collective who spoke with a crewmember confirmed to Business Insider that Venus, the 78-meter yacht Steve Jobs commissioned, had collided with Lady Moura, a 105-meter yacht. The collision happened on July 22 off the coast of Naples, Italy.

The spokesperson said that only crew were onboard the yacht and that both boats were anchored when a sudden change of wind led to the collision.

Venus is cruising in the Ligurian Sea, while Lady Moura made its way to Mykonos on Wednesday, based on publicly available tracking data from Marine Traffic.

Videos posted on social media show the strikingly minimalist Venus and the Lady Moura coming into contact. It's not clear from the videos which superyacht struck which, though someone who said they were aboard the Lady Moura seemed to blame Venus' crew on social media, SuperYacht Times reported. The person said the damage was "only a scratch, albeit a significant one that will be costly to repair."

Others on social media said that the Venus appeared to be moored and that Lady Moura seemed to have swung into the boat. BI hasn't been able to independently verify either claim.

Related stories

The Italian Marina Militare didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. The owner of the Lady Moura couldn't be reached.

No matter how little damage may have been done, insurance will probably cover it. Yacht insurance , which can cost six figures each month, is one of the largest costs incurred by yacht owners.

Venus, built by the top yacht-builder Feadship, was delivered after Jobs died in 2011 and was worth $130 million upon completion. The Apple cofounder was heavily involved in the design process alongside the French architect and decorator Philippe Starck.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck spent four years working on her design, the designer told Vanity Fair , holding monthly meetings to discuss her specifications. She has six identical cabins, was built to maximize absolute silence, and, upon delivery, included the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes." August 7, 2024 — This story has been updated with a statement from a Laurene Powell Jobs spokesperson.

Bodies of Autonomy founder Mike Lynch and his daughter recovered from sunken Bayesian yacht

Mike Lynch at TC Disrupt

Grim news coming in from Sicily, Italy. Mike Lynch, the U.K. investor and founder of IT company Autonomy, has been identified as one of two bodies recovered from the Bayesian , the yacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily early Monday, according to several reports coming out of the country that cite the chief of Civil Protection, Salvo Cocina.

Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, has also been identified. Both are pictured on the right.

The news caps off a grim few days of events. The boat, registered to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, quickly capsized in the early hours of Monday after it was struck by a tornado-like water column. Bacares was among the 15 survivors, but three bodies have now been found and four more are still being recovered from the wreck. Those yet to be found include the international chairman of Morgan Stanley bank, his wife, a lawyer from New York who worked with Lynch, and his wife.

As we previously reported , the Bayesian was on a voyage to celebrate Lynch’s acquittal in a criminal fraud trial in the U.S. earlier this summer. That trial also involved a co-defendant, Stephen Chamberlain.

In a tragic coincidence, Chamberlain was hit by a car last Saturday and died of his wounds earlier this week.

Lynch was one of the most well-known and colorful figures in the U.K. technology world — sometimes referred to as the “Bill Gates of U.K. tech.”

HP acquired Lynch’s enterprise technology firm Autonomy in 2011 for $11 billion — a major milestone for U.K. technology and one of the biggest tech M&A deals at the time. But it quickly turned sour, and HP sued Lynch and Autonomy’s director of finance, Chamberlain, arguing it was misled in the transaction.

HP claimed that the deal led to a $4 billion+ loss — money it then demanded from Lynch and Chamberlain. Lynch (pictured above, left) and his co-defendant long asserted that they acted in good faith and were being made into scapegoats over a merger gone bad.

That legal drama went on for more than a decade and involved a host of other thorny chapters, including Lynch’s extradition to the U.S. over the DoJ criminal suit (the one that only recently concluded with acquittal) and a lot of very bad publicity for him. It also included a second, civil case that took place in 2022 in the U.K., which Lynch lost.

The U.S. criminal case, where Lynch and Chamberlain were charged with 15 counts of fraud and conspiracy and could have spelled jail for the pair, went to trial earlier this year in San Francisco. Then finally, in June, Lynch and Chamberlain were acquitted .

In the interim years, Lynch built up a profile in the U.K. as a prominent investor, most prominently as the founder of Invoke Capital .

The VC firm was the biggest investor in cybersecurity firm Darktrace, a connection that was not without its own controversy . It also invested in Sophia Genetics , Featurespace and Luminance, among others. And it appeared that this is the route that he had been planning to continue to pursue.

“I am elated with today’s verdict and grateful to the jury for their attention to the facts over the last 10 weeks. My deepest thanks go to my legal team for their tireless work on my behalf,” Lynch said at the time of the acquittal in June. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field.”

Our thoughts go out to Lynch’s (and Chamberlain’s) family, friends and colleagues. We have also reached out to Lynch’s spokespeople and will update this post as we learn more.
