On September 7 at the S.B. Yacht Club’s Charity Regatta for VNA Health, guests enjoyed a splendid, full day of socializing, dining, and watching the regatta at the S.B. Yacht Club (SBYC) and on spectator boats. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the event, which over the years has raised more than $2.5 million for the treasured nonprofit VNA Health (formerly Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care). The day began with brunch at the club, where guests enjoyed ocean views, perfect weather, and steel drum music. In a short program, emcee David Moorman shared his gratitude to VNA for the care his mother received in her last days at Serenity House, remarking that in those darkest days, VNA staff had infinite amounts of strength, resolve, and resources to guide him and his family. Throughout the day, I heard many words of praise and gratitude for the care that they and loved ones had received at VNA, a level of care that some noted far surpassed what they had experienced with for-profit institutions. Every year, more SBYC members experience in some regard VNA Health’s services, and, quite fittingly, every year VNA Health is again chosen as the event’s beneficiary. Commodore Dennis Boneck recognized the event honorees: first responders from a multitude of agencies that serve the S.B. Harbor. Guests were introduced to Project Harmony, a program run by 9-1-1 At Ease International, a nonprofit that offers counseling and therapy to first responders and their families. In Project Harmony, healing is provided through songwriting and music. Two participants, Lois Mahalia and Hannah Griffin, beautifully performed a tribute to the first responders present. Many guests then boarded one of the 16 spectator boats for a fun couple of hours. I boarded Torqua , Geoff and Alison Rusack’s 86-foot Ocean Alexander luxurious motor yacht, where we enjoyed cruising the harbor, watching the regatta, and socializing in the various deck and cabin lounge areas. After guests returned to the club, the party continued with a buffet dinner and guests seated at tables on the sand, while Davitt Felder & Band provided great music. Awards were presented to the winners of the three race classes: Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Warrior ; Ole Eichhorn, Spot the 505 ; and Shawn Hughes, Picante . Funds raised by the Regatta go to VNA Health’s charitable community programs and services. VNA Health operates a multitude of programs, including home health, hospice (at Serenity House and in-home), and palliative care. Last year, the value of VNA’s charity care was $2.4 million, which included $1.7 million in services for uninsured and underinsured patients in these programs. The other $700,000 went to programs it offers beyond the standard ones, such as its Loan Closet, bereavement care, and integrative therapies such as Reiki, pet therapy, and music services. Last year, VNA’s 380-plus employees and volunteers served more than 8,700 patients. VNA Health always welcomes new volunteers, including for hospice (full training provided), music services (for those who play an instrument), Loan Closet (for those who like to tinker and fix equipment), pet therapy (owner/pet teams) and veterans’ program (for vet volunteers to connect with vet patients). This 9-event Series includes both Drop-Mark and Distance racing for Spinnaker A, B, and C divisions, plus Distance races for Racer-Cruiser, Cruising, and Multi-Hull. 2024-2025_DIYC_BOTY_NoSeries Bring your partner and compete in a pursuit race on one of three courses. The specific course will be chosen on the day based on the wind direction and strength, and will be indicated by the flag pole. For more details, please refer to the abbreviated Notice of Race/Sailing Instructions (NOR/SI). The Island-2-Island Race is a new race co-sponsored with the Venice Yacht Club. Registration, Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions This Boat-of-the-Year event for DIYC encourages participation from veteran racers to casual cruisers looking to check out the racing scene. There are divisions for everyone with choices in Spinnaker, Racer-Cruiser, Multi-Hull, and Cruising. This one-day event features Hillsborough Bay Drop-Mark races for Spinnaker Divisions and a Distance course for the other Divisions. After an afternoon of racing, DIYC hosts our traditional adult Halloween party. Costumes are strongly encouraged for the awards party – for a separate competition of course. The race is only half the fun. Registration, Notice of Race, and Sailing Instructions New and old sailors alike gather on our beautiful Hillsborough Bay for a tradition unlike any other. Davis Islands' "Full Moon Series" continues our popular weeknight racing through the winter months. To join a boat, visit the yacht club bar on Thursday night and let the staff know you are "crew looking for boat." Whether you have experience or not, invited guests are welcome to visit and participate to learn more about sailing. The club bar is open (accepting credit cards) and pub grub and meals are available (members receive discounted rates). Racing begins at 1900. Registration, NOR, and Sailing Instructions Provide the women of the Tampa Bay area an opportunity to compete against each other with an all-female crew and socialize after the racing. Notice of Race and Registration Egmont Key Race dates back to 1935 and is the oldest running sailboat race on the west coast of Florida. It was created as a warm-up race for the Havana Race. The 65-mile-long course takes racers around the key and back to DIYC. We also offer a 35-mile short course that stays inside the key for cruising and small spinnaker boats. The winner of the long course is awarded the perpetual Houston Wall Trophy. Come out for this ancient traditional single-handed race! The regatta is open only to members of DIYC, with no entry fee. Boats shall register with the RC at 0800-0830. For the Old Shoe class, boats must meet one of the following conditions: - WFPHRF base RLC Cruising rating > 200
- Be at least 30’ LOA and displacement > 10,000 lbs.
- Written approval of the race committee
Boats not meeting one of the above conditions shall compete in the New Shoe class. Notice of Race The annual Thanksgiving Regatta, one of the largest events at DIYC, is coming again this fall. Opti's, 420's and ILCA/Lasers will be racing. Please join us for a great way to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This is a one-day regatta with drop-mark races for spinnaker boats and a distance race for others. All spinnaker B and C boats on the Drop-mark Course will compete for the perpetual Frank Selph Memorial Trophy. Frank was an avid MORC supporter and the trophy is awarded in his honor. This event is part of the DIYC BOTY Series and the Suncoast BOTY Series. All boats up to 24 feet come on out for this 12th edition of a fun event! Also known as "Revenge of the Race Committee", this regatta is sure to sharpen your boat-handling skills. Race Documents Dedicated to the honor of all Davis Island Yacht Club past Commodores, this two-day regatta kicks off the new year with intense racing for two days. The best come out to set the tone for the second half of the season. This is a BOTY regatta. A limited breakfast menu will be available at 9 am. Notice of Race, Registration, and Sailing Instructions The ATP Race loosely follows our DIYC series formula of starting and finishing at DIYC. Part of the DIYC BOTY Series. Limited breakfast menu will be available. “Come Hell or high water” was the phrase used by our first regatta chair, Brian Malone. This distance race is held in Hillsborough Bay, but don’t assume it is just an afternoon cruise. Test your navigation skills and plan to race even if the weather pipes up. This time of year is prone to fronts. In the internet age, most race decisions are made at the bar watching radar. You can plan to race this one to hone your heavy weather skills, so don’t shy away if there is a blow. Part of the DIYC BOTY Series. Limited breakfast menu will be available. Race Documents and Registration Annual Admirals Cup Regatta for all A-Cats. Similar to the traditions of the Morgan Invasion, the Tampa Bay Hospice Cup appeals to both cruisers and racers. In addition to the traditional Morgan Invasion fleets, the regatta also features open non-Morgan fleets for PHRF, Multi-hulls, and a “Just-for-Fun” casual fleet. The committee also plans landside activities for supporters who’d like to be a part of the event but who don’t care to race. All proceeds will benefit Tampa Bay area Hospice organizations, which offer comprehensive hospice and palliative care, caregiver education, individual and group counseling, spiritual support and many other programs to those it serves regardless of race, age, faith, diagnosis or financial circumstances. Part of the DIYC BOTY Series. Limited breakfast menu will be available. Grab a partner and join us for double-handed race. The goal is not to win but to still be talking after the race! Follows the Sunday Race format. We are looking forward to hosting a great race weekend to share with clubs around the South here at Davis Island Yacht Club. There is a maximum of 50 competitors in each of the Green and RWB fleets and a max of 25 in 420 and 25 in Laser. Information and Registration The race from Tampa to Naples (not Ft. Myers) takes place every year on Memorial Day weekend, marking the end of DIYC's Boat of the Year series and our regatta calendar. The thrill of this coastal race is matched only by the awards ceremony in Naples, which is more of a "banquet." Get your crew and safety gear ready and we'll see you at the starting line! DBusiness Daily Update: Bayview Yacht Club Unveils Plans for 100th Bayview Mackinac Race, and MoreOur roundup of the latest news from metro Detroit and Michigan businesses as well as announcements from government agencies. To share a business or nonprofit story, please send us a message. Bayview Yacht Club Unveils Plans for 100th Bayview Mackinac Race Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit has unveiled its plans for the 100 th running of the Bayview Mackinac race next July and announced that registration is open for the event. “As you can imagine with this being such a significant event, we are witnessing an extraordinary level of interest and enthusiasm for the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race,” says Charlie Trost, chair of the 2024 Bayview Mackinac Race. “Sailors, both seasoned veterans and newcomers alike, are gearing up to be part of this historic occasion. The race is not only a test of skill, but also a celebration of the enduring spirit of adventure and competition.” In conjunction with the opening of registration, National Fleet Services was announced as the presenting sponsor for the 100th running of the race, which will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. on July 20, 2024. “We are excited to have National Fleet Services and previous Bayview Yacht Club Commodore Tim LaRiviere as our new presenting sponsor,” says Mike Helm, 2024 commodore of the Bayview Yacht Club. “A longtime sailor, Tim shares the same passion for the race as every competitor taking part in the 2024 event. “With their sponsorship, we will be able to improve various aspects of the event, including safety measures, race logistics and participant amenities. This partnership will not only benefit the competitors, but also help make the race more appealing to sailing enthusiasts and fans.” According to LaRiviere, founder, president, and CEO of National Fleet Services: “Our goal in becoming the presenting sponsor of the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is to help make it a memorable experience for all involved. There is a strong bond between the sailing community and those who are passionate about its growth and success. We look forward to a bright future for the race and sailing growth in new and existing audiences.” For the 100th race, all competitors will sail on the 1925 Original Course, used during the first race. The course covers 204 nautical miles (235 statute miles). From its traditional start in southern Lake Huron, the fleet will head north on one course along the Michigan shoreline before heading west, passing south of Bois Blanc Island, finishing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island. (The original course started three nautical miles south of the current one, off Lake Side Park, Gratiot Beach. As the race gained in participants, the starting line was moved to its current location to accommodate the required starting line length and sufficient depth over its entire length.) The logo for the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is shaped like the Bayview Mackinac Race plaque that originated with the inaugural race in 1925. The colors mirror those in the Bayview Yacht Club burgee, while the gold outline represents the 100 years of the race. The 100 in infinity represents that the race has been continuously run for 100 years and will continue indefinitely. Northwestern Mutual’s Black Founder Accelerator Program Marks Third Year Furthering its commitment to championing diversity, equity, and inclusion, Northwestern Mutual, in partnership with gener8tor, a nationally ranked startup accelerator, announced this year’s fall cohort of five Black-owned tech startups to its Black Founder Accelerator program, which includes a company in Detroit. Research shows that Black founders receive less than 2 percent of venture capital. To combat this substantial funding disparity for Black entrepreneurs, each startup is eligible for a $100,000 investment and inclusion in a 12-week intensive program with access to individualized coaching and mentorship from industry-leading professionals. This is one of many core components to the company’s Sustained Action for Racial Equity (SARE) initiative, which was created to advance bold, sustainable change that accelerates Northwestern Mutual’s commitment to fight racism, prejudice, and social injustice, with a focus on the Black and African American community. Ashton Keys, founder and CEO of athlytic.io, is the company in Detroit among this year’s cohort. Athlytic bridges the gap between brands and student-athletes by providing a “seamless connection for name, image, and likeness campaigns through use of data-driven insights and expert recommendations” to pair brands with the perfect athletes for ROI-driven endorsement campaigns. In addition to the Black Founder Accelerator program, Northwestern Mutual also committed to a $100-million impact investing fund to deliver on the company’s commitment to addressing inequality and the racial wealth gap in the U.S. The fund focuses on three key areas: physical and social infrastructure, access to capital for individuals and businesses, and healthy sustainable neighborhoods and communities. Precision Metalforming Association to Host West Michigan Supplier Event The Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) West Michigan District in Grand Rapids will host its seventh annual supplier event on Nov. 2, at The Pinnacle Center in Hudsonville, just west of Grand Rapids. Top metalforming industry suppliers will showcase their capabilities and latest technologies to local manufacturers at the Suppliers EXPO. Previously called Suppliers Night and recently rebranded as the West Michigan Suppliers EXPO, the event will feature new show hours, from 11-4 p.m. More than 200 suppliers and manufacturers are expected to attend. Participants will be offered a lunch buffet, beverages, and raffle prize giveaways while making connections, networking, and finding resources within the west Michigan manufacturing community. Lawrence Tech Preparing for 2024 Robofest With the future of mobility leaning toward autonomous vehicles, Robofest 2024 at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield will focus on vehicle autonomy. This year’s game is called “Autonomous Taxi,” during which a robot “taxi” will pick up “passengers” (golf balls) at one end of a table and take them to destinations, boxes placed around the table, maneuvering around “pedestrians,” D-size batteries. One of the passengers must be placed on the “second floor” of a destination box. Simple bar codes will be used to identify the destinations. Now in its 25th season, Robofest is a festival of competitions with autonomous robots offering students the opportunity to master the principles of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) and have fun. More than 34,600 students from 34 countries and 18 U.S. states have participated since 1999. Robofest robots must be completely autonomous, controlled only by software. The registration fee is $75 and any small robot platform and programming language are allowed. (Robot kits for Robofest, from LEGO and other manufacturers, start at about $400.) Teams compete in Junior (grades 5-8) and Senior (grades 9-12) divisions. This year, for the first time, Robofest teams are eligible for Michigan Department of Education robotics competition grants of up to $1,200 per team. A Robofest sponsor, the Michigan Council of Women in Technology, also offer grants of $750 for all-girl teams. All Robofest competitors automatically qualify for a $3,000-a-year Lawrence Tech scholarship. Winning teams are eligible for a $17,000-a-year LTU scholarship. Registration is now open for Robofest teams. International competitions begin in November, with U.S. competitions starting in February and concluding in April. Teams that place high in regional competitions qualify for the Robofest World Championships, to be conducted on the LTU campus in Southfield May 9-11. There also will be workshops for coaches and competitors over the winter. And Robofest is always looking for local volunteer host sites for its regional qualifying competitions. For more information, visit robofest.net . John Dempsey Exhibit Opening at The Flint Institute of Arts Oct. 14 The Flint Institute of Arts is presenting “Fabrication in Transit,” a new exhibition opening Oct. 14 and on view through Jan. 7 in the FIA Graphics Gallery. This collection features works on paper by Michigan-native John Dempsey that celebrate and chronicle our shared industrial environments. The exhibition consists of work in a variety of media, from a series of ink drawings dating from the early 1980s, to an extended series of more recent watercolors, as well as mixed-media work fabricated in Mott Community College’s FabLab. “The artworks in this exhibition are landscapes of Michigan’s industrial past and present,” says Rachael Holstege, associate curator at the FIA. “They exemplify the industry that built this state and the presence it still has in our daily lives. The FIA is excited to have artworks on view that so many people within our community will be able to connect to.” The FIA will welcome Dempsey in person for an Artist Talk Q&A at 6 p.m. Nov. 9 in the FIA Theater. Here the artist will discuss the works in his exhibition, followed by a Q&A with the audience. This event is free and open to the public. On Nov. 10, Dempsey invites community members to share short personal accounts and memories about their experience working in the ‘shop’ at Buick City or AC/Delco in Flint.
