Highlights from the 2022 Genoa International Boat Show

On September 22, thousands of boat enthusiasts flocked to Genoa for the six-day annual boat show. Those who attended the show had access to 168 world premieres, 4,463 sea trials, conventions, seminars, technical workshops, conferences and presentations.

Here, we share more about the highlights that show-goers experienced during the 2022 Genoa International Boat Show.

Events and awards

Guests of the show were offered a full programme of talks and conferences throughout the six-day agenda. Topics included the growth of the yachting industry in Italy, the future of yachting, pro surfing, NFT designs and environmental protection.

On the third day of the show, a Gala Dinner to celebrate the 62nd Genoa International Boat Show was held in the dolphin hall of the Genoa Aquarium. During the event, the Design Innovation Award ceremony took place and saw nine boats being awarded for their innovation, performance and quality. The winners included the Dufour 37 by Dufour Yachts, the Inagua S by Rio Yachts, the Grand Soleil 72 Performance by Cantiere del Pardo, the Prestige M48 by Prestige Yachts, the Ferretti 860 and the SP 110 by Sanlorenzo.

With many new designs being presented during the show, some of the largest in attendance were Azimut’s Grande 26M, the 23-metre sailing yacht Grand Soleil 72, the new Navetta 75, the 35.5-metre Amer 120 and Sanlorenzo’s SP110 and SL120A. Other boats included those from Custom Line, Bluegame, Lekker Boats, Nautor Swan, Pershing, Princess, Riva and Sirena Yacht.

Sporting events

With a string of sports stars and Olympians in attendance throughout the event, the likes of Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallists Ruggero Tita and Caterina Marianna Banti and Italian 470 mixed sailors Marco Gradoni and Alessandra Dubbini joined a round table session to discuss their time in the spotlight as industry athletes.

Hundreds of boats registered and set sail from Genoa’s marinas for the Iren Millevele. After nearly two hours of racing, the first to cross the finish line was Adelio Frixione's X35 Imxtinente. In the virtual world, the final of the virtual sailing tournament, E-Sailing Championship, also took place.

Future plans

After recording at least 103,812 visitors to the 2022 show and over 10% more visitors than 2021, the Genoa International Boat Show and organisers Confindustria Nautica (the Italian Marine Industry Association) and I Saloni Nautici confirmed a 2023 edition of the event. Scheduled to take place from September 21 to 26 next year, the show is set to expand and host 200 more berths with a brand new exhibition space: Genoa’s Levante Waterfront redevelopment project. The area has been conceived by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano and will give the show a new layout.

The Genoa International Boat Show, or Salone Nautico, will be celebrating its 63rd anniversary for its run from September 21-26. The event is much older than either the Cannes Yachting Festival or Monaco Yacht Show, and at one point, was the premier event in Europe. It slowly ceded its show-king status to the other two venues, largely because they had more glamorous settings.

But Genoa, the seafaring city where Christopher Columbus was born, plans to reclaim its standing as a top-tier event. The location on the Genoa waterfront is ideal for a boat show, and this year, it will be showing off a new infrastructure that has been three years in the making.

The location has new canals around the Blue Pavilion, its showcase exhibition center, and the addition of more than 150 berths. The boat show will also have more than 1,000 boats on display, from 6.5-foot inflatables to 131-foot superyachts. Next year, the renovations will be complete, turning the once-dilapidated docklands into a beautiful luxury center, with high-end residences and a gorgeous waterfront.

Sanlorenzo SX100

Having also made its French premiere at Cannes last week, Sanlorenzo’s SX100 is a full custom yacht that is the latest model in the brand’s crossover range. Signature fold-down terraces and a large open transom create both a private sundeck and social beach club. The space can also hold many water toys, including a 19-foot tender. Sea terraces behind the two top decks offer private areas for relaxing. A main salon with floor-to-ceiling windows is one of the boat’s most impressive features. The five guest staterooms include an owner’s suite, a VIP, and three double cabins.

Lomac GranTurismo 14.0X

The GranTurismo 14.0X will make many conventional yacht owners consider a RIB. Lomac’s new 46-foot flagship is a beautiful day boat, with an open bow, protected helm area, rear dinette, and aft-facing sunpads that overlook the triple outboards at the stern—though the boat at Genoa will have twin 450 hp Yamaha XTOs. The boat has a cabin with a bed and separate head and shower for owners who may want to weekend. Lomac also focused on quality touches like teak accents, walnut furniture, and even a hand-sewn leather cover on the steering wheel.

Riva 82 Diva

This newest member of the Riva line, the Diva was launched last summer at Riva’s yacht-building facility in La Spezia. Its flybridge, which offers great social possibilities, is the big differentiator. The 430-square-foot upper deck includes a lounge area with dinette and bar in the center, sunbathing area, and another lounge aft. Down below, there’s a large beach club with foldout sides; it’s connected to a raised cockpit with sofas. Like most Rivas, performance is critical: The Diva has a top speed of 29 knots with the standard MAN-V-12 1800 diesels. With the upgraded MAN V-12 1900s, it reaches 31 knots while cruising at 27.

This new cruiser boasts a cockpit that is larger than most yachts in its class. But the interior is equally sizable, with the option of three or four staterooms and two or three en suites. The three-stateroom version, which will be at the show, includes a large main cabin and two sizable guest cabins, each with its own en suite. Dufour says the 41 is the only sailboat in its class with two forward cabins, each with double beds, with plenty of soundproofing between to ensure privacy.

Azimut Verve 48

The new Verve 48 is one of two models in Azimut’s outboard-powered line that originally targeted the U.S. market, but are now becoming popular in Europe. The Verve 42, launched last year, is the smaller sistership. The 48 is actually a redesign of the 47, which was first launched in 2000 . But this new version has undergone a refresh with a larger, more open stern, including a swim platform with excellent space around the three 600 hp Mercury outboards. Other features like the large open bow with lounge and table, two-cabin interior, and see-through panel amidships are true to this Verve’s orginal design, making this an exceptional weekender—especially considering it reaches 50 knots.

Frauscher 1212 Ghost Air

This gold-hued boat is a refresh of the Austrian builder’s 1212 Ghost, with a lightweight, carbon-fiber T-Top above the helm or, if the owner prefers, a retractable bimini top. Either way, this will be the coolest day boat at Genoa, supplemented by a side-mounted galley, with fridge and cooker, and plentiful seating in both the bow and rear of the boat. Besides good looking, the Ghost is fast: Sterndrive power (either MerCruiser or Volvo-Penta) will deliver a top end of over 40 knots. At a friendly cruise speed, it will have a range of 300 miles.

Ecoracer OD 30

The world’s first one-design sailboat built with recyclable materials and rComposites technology shows that sustainability can indeed be part and parcel of new-boat design. The 30-foot Matteo Polli design builds on the research of Northern Light Composites and follows the launch of the smaller Ecoracer 25 last year. Beyond its green-build credentials, this production boat was designed to be a fun, barebones sailing vessel with a large open cockpit. A second hull is now on the production line.

Princess S72

This newest Princess made its global debut last January at the Düsseldorf boat show , and has since been seen at the Cannes show and the U.K.’s Southampton event. This week, the S72 is making its Italian debut. With the “S” standing for Sportbridge, this racy-looking, 72-foot coupe, with four staterooms and a compact flybridge, fits nicely between the builder’s S66 and S78 luxury cruisers. Twin MAN V12 diesels—standard 1,650 hp or optional 1,800s—deliver up to a 41 mph top end.

Bluegame BGM75

The BGM75, which debuted at Cannes this year , is a fresh take on a power catamaran design, employing a reduced beam to keep its twin hulls closer together. That gives it more of a monohull feel, but with the advantages of a big cat. That includes enhanced fuel efficiency and better stability. But it also let the design team create a full-beam main suite on a single deck—unique among large power cats. The spacious beach club, large salon, and connected cockpits also complete the fresh, new take on multihull design.

Solaris Power 52 Open

Known for its sailboats, Solaris also makes a stylish line of powerboats. The Power 52 Open, with its vertical bow, curved hull sides and carbon-fiber hardtop, is a contemporary-looking model that displays the best of Italian style. The cockpit has three configurations, with either a large C-shaped lounge, two opposing seats, and a single sofa. Below-decks, the owner can opt for a two- or three-stateroom layout, including a crew cabin. The boat delivers a top speed of 24 or 30 knots, depending on power selection of either Volvo IPS 650 or IPS 800 drives.

Grand Soleil 72LC

Cantiere del Pardo’s new iteration of its 72-footer ends with LC, standing for Long Cruise. It follows on a performance model launched last year. Standout features on this global cruiser include a deckhouse with a large window (offering 270-degree views), along with expanded outdoor seating and two large sundecks aft. The outdoor dinette has also been enhanced. Nauta Design’s interior includes luxe materials and colors that defy the usual humdrum sailing yacht layouts. The forward owner’s cabin and crew and guest cabins are spacious, while owners have the option of forward or aft galley layouts.

Greenline 58 FLY

Greenline is one of the more interesting builders in Europe, offering diesel, hybrid diesel-electric or full electric power on all its models. Its new 58Fly also has top-drawer exterior features, including a flexible cockpit layout and generous flybridge. The interior has an optional two- or three-stateroom configuration, with a roomy salon and aft galley that overlooks the cockpit. Depending on choice of propulsion, the boat’s top speeds range from 29 knots with the diesels to 12 with the electric-only power configuration.

Astondoa Ax8

The Ax8 is described by Astondoa as a “social cruiser,” with space for 18 guests. The Spanish builder has a knack for coming up with innovative designs, and this new 80-foot, wide-bodied motoryacht is no exception. The unusually wide 20-foot beam allows for large passageways between the cockpit and beach club, while the extra volume provides space for two spacious sundecks—one on the main deck and the other on the flybridge. The aft cockpit has a dining and social area with a view of the beach club, but with a glass divider for inclement weather. The Ax8 has four cabins, including the full-beam main and two VIPs aft, with a guest cabin forward. All are en suite. The vessel also has two crew cabins. The yacht is powered by twin Volvo Penta 1350s.

The Italian Marine Industry Association presented the 63 rd Genoa International Boat Show. The upcoming novelties are many and suggest this year’s edition will be a huge event.

Officially presented yesterday, the 63 rd Genoa International Boat Show, scheduled to take place from September 21-26, is about to open its doors with very impressive figures.

1,043 brands on display , an increase of 4.5% since 2022, and well over 1,000 boats – measuring from 2 to 40 metres in length – with 143 additional berths thanks to the opening of the Waterfront’s brand new canals. 184 new products will be showcased for the first time ( +9.5% compared to 2022 ).

President Saverio Cecchi in his speech wanted to remark how far it has come over the years. A reality of the past with a vision of the future. “This is an event – he stated – that has always interpreted and represented the yachting industry as a whole, which continues to grow: forecasts predict the sector’s turnover to exceed 7 billion euros and exports to generate record numbers”.

The doors of the 63rd Genoa International Boat Show will open on Thursday 21st September with the inaugural conference “ Industria nautica. La storia del future ” (“The yachting industry, the history behind the future”), which will feature an exceptional line up of institutional guest speakers. The attendance of Italian Minister for Infrastructures and Transport, Matteo Salvini, Minister for Business and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso , Minister for Defence Guido Crosetto , President of the Confederation of Italian Industries Carlo Bonomi , and ENI President Giuseppe Zafarana have already confirmed their participation.

Official data will be provided on 21st September when the latest edition of the market analysis book Nautica in Cifre LOG, produced by the Italian Marine Industry Association’s Research and Market Intelligence department in cooperation with the Edison Foundation, will be presented.

“We are all obviously keen to hear these figures,” continued Mr. Cecchi, “but let’s remember that they represent a single frame of a film that tells a story of Italian success. The Genoa Boat Show was the original, an example followed by others.

It was the driving force behind the international growth of Italian shipyards, which had been operating since the 1950s, and positioned them at the peak of world production. It has never missed a year, not even during the storm that was Covid. With the completion of the Waterfront redevelopment plan, the Boat Show will become a truly global platform for business development, history and design”.

“ It is essential to focus on sustainability. And the Italian Marine Industry Association is doing so by using its most powerful tool, the Genoa International Boat Show, raising awareness of a topic that cannot be ignored. Yachting has a minimal environmental impact, 0.06% according to the official IMO (International Maritime Organisation) data, but we still want to make sure we commit to cutting down those emissions too,” highlighted Carla Demaria, Managing Director of I Saloni Nautici.

Alessandro Campagna, the Boat Show’s Sales Manager: “ Both the strength and the uniqueness of the Genoa International Boat Show lie in its ability to represent and meet the expectations of each and every sea lover. The Show is a “multi-specialised” event due to the breadth and depth of the ranges of products displayed in each category, which make it 5 Boat Shows in one”.

The 63 rd Genoa Boat Show will be characterized by the venue’s grand transformation, set within the virtuous project of the Waterfront di Levante redevelopment, following the design of renowned architect Renzo Piano. The location is no longer simply the place where the Genoa International Boat Show takes place. Now the waterfront is becoming an asset for new display solutions.

A Guide to the Genoa Boat Show 2023

The Genoa Boat Show 2023 is the 63rd edition of the world’s largest in-water boat show, and it will be held from September 21 to 26, 2023, at the Waterfront di Levante in Genoa, Italy. 

The show is expected to attract over 250,000 visitors worldwide and feature over 2,000 boats, ranging in size from small dinghies to large superyachts.

Tickets to the show will cost €23 for adults, €16 for children 6-12 years old, free for children under 6. Early booking through the Boat Show website is advised, as tickets are known to sell out quickly once released to the market. 

In addition to seeing the many luxury boats on display, the Genoa Boat Show will also feature a variety of other attractions, such as:

This year the boat show will feature a wide variety of yachts, including some of the following breathtaking luxury vessels:

• Azimut Grande 92: This 92-foot motor yacht is the latest creation from Azimut Yachts and will surely be a crowd-pleaser. The vessel features a sleek exterior and a luxurious interior, and it is powered by two MTU diesel engines that give it a top speed of 25 knots.
• CRN 135: This 135-foot motor yacht is the latest creation from CRN, and it will turn plenty of heads. The boat features a unique exterior design and a spacious interior, and it is powered by two Rolls-Royce diesel engines that give it a top speed of 27 knots.
• Lago 64: This 64-foot sailing yacht is the latest creation from Lago and will surely be a hit with sailing enthusiasts. The boat features a classic exterior design and a luxurious interior, and it is powered by two 30hp Volvo Penta diesel engines that give it a top speed of 15 knots.
• Pershing 82: This 82-foot motor yacht is the latest creation from Pershing and will surely be one of the most talked-about yachts at the show. The vessel features a futuristic exterior design and a luxurious interior, and it is powered by two MTU diesel engines that give it a top speed of 31 knots.
• Sanlorenzo 141: This 141-foot motor yacht is the latest creation from Sanlorenzo, and it is sure to be a hit with yachting enthusiasts. The ship features a classic exterior design and a luxurious interior, and it is powered by two MTU diesel engines that give it a top speed of 25 knots.

If you are planning on bringing your family, they will be highly entertained with the following activities:

• A kids’ zone with games, activities, and entertainment. The kids’ zone will be located in the heart of the show, and it will be open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm each day.
• A boatbuilding workshop where children can learn how to build their own boat. The boatbuilding workshop will be held in the afternoons, and children must register beforehand.
• A sea trial where children can take a ride on a boat. The sea trials will be held on the show’s first three days, and an adult must accompany the children.
• A storytelling session with a children’s author. The storytelling session will be held in the morning, and children should arrive early to get a good seat.
• A face painting station and a balloon animal station. The face painting and balloon animal stations will be open all day, and children can get their faces painted or have a balloon animal made for them.
• A petting zoo. The petting zoo will be located in the kids’ zone, and children can meet and interact with a wide choice of animals.

Genoa show expands berths, exhibition area

The 64th edition Genoa International Boat Show will feature more berths and exhibition space due to the ongoing Eastern Waterfront development.

The 2024 edition of the Genoa International Boat Show (September 19-24) will feature over 100 new berths and an additional 5,000sqm of land exhibition space, as part of the Eastern Waterfront redevelopment project.

Compared to 2022, the 63 rd edition last September offered 143 additional berths due to the opening of new canals in the waterfront project, which has been designed and donated to the city by renowned architect Renzo Piano.

This year, there will also be double the parking space for visitors following the completion of a new car park underneath the city’s iconic indoor sports arena, which connects directly to the show venue.

Organised by the Italian Marine Industry Association (Confindustria Nautica), t he show has been enjoying a post-pandemic resurgence, with last year’s 118,269 visitors over six days marking an almost 14 per cent increase on 2022, itself a 10.7 per cent rise on 2021. Last year’s show featured over 1,000 boats and 1,043 brands on display.

Following a record annual production value of over 7 billion euros, the Italian boating industry is gearing up for the Genoa Boat Show 2023, scheduled from September 21 to 26.  Speaking at a press conference before the return, representatives from the show and across the region outlined the vision.  "Italy continues to lead the world in the boating sector. We are the pioneers, and no one can challenge our position," declared Saverio Cecchi, the Chairman of Confindustria Nautica. "We excel in superyachts, inflatable units over ten meters, accessories, and components. Now, our goal is to dominate in sector events as well. By 2024, we will achieve this." In 2023, more than a thousand boats will be on display, ranging up to 40 meters in size. There will be 1,043 brands showcased, marking a 45% year-on-year increase, with 143 additional berths available in the new Waterfront canals and 184 new products on display, reflecting a 9.5% year-on-year increase. These are the key figures for the sixty-third edition of the Genoa Boat Show, which unveils new areas on the blue island of the Waterfront di Levante. This area was constructed from scratch within the exhibition spaces, inspired by the vision of the renowned Genoese architect, Renzo Piano. Another notable change from the previous edition is the area behind the Jean Nouvel Pavilion, which now provides direct access to the new quay reserved entirely for the exhibition. "In 1967, a pivotal moment occurred when the first national category association, Ucina, now Confindustria Nautica, took responsibility for organizing the boat show. We were the pioneers; Dusseldorf followed in 1969, Cannes in 1977, and Monaco in 1979. However, we were the originals, the first." "Our ambitions continue to grow. Our aim for our show is to gain recognition as the world's leading boat show, and we are on track," added Mr. Cecchi. "We strive to host the world's most prominent boat show because boating is Italy's fastest-growing sector." The Ligurian Governor, Giovanni Toti, agreed, saying, "The 2023 Genoa Boat Show promises a plethora of innovations for the boating world. This industry is of paramount importance to our region. From grand yachts to small vessels, from production to refitting, and through Italy's most prestigious shipyards, Liguria is emerging as a powerhouse in this domain." Motoryachts account for 52.3% of the display, RIBS 33.4%, sailing yachts 12%, and multihulls for 2.3%. The day cruiser sector is witnessing growth, with its representation increasing from 14.5% to 21.8%. Prominent among the displayed vessels are Sanlorenzo's 30.50m SX100 and the Bluegame BGM75, the Group's inaugural multihull designed by Philippe Briand, showcasing the new Twin Hull design approach. Azimut introduces the S7, featuring a fuel-efficient configuration, alongside the Magellano 60. Next Yacht Group will exhibit the AB100 and Opera Prima Mare will showcase its OPM 37 Hybrid, equipped with solar panels and electric motors. Two months after being cleared in a bruising legal battle over fraud charges, the British tech mogul Mike Lynch celebrated his freedom with a cruise. He invited his family, friends and part of his legal team on board his luxury sailing yacht, a majestic 180-foot vessel named Bayesian after the mathematical theorem around which he had built his empire. On Sunday night, after a tour of the Gulf of Naples, including Capri, and volcanic islands in the Eolian archipelago, the boat anchored half a mile off the Sicilian coast in Porticello, Italy. It chose a stretch of water favored by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago for its protection from the mistral wind and, in more recent times, by the yachts of tech billionaires. The boat was lit “like a Christmas tree,” local residents said, standing out against the full moon. But about 4 a.m., calamity unfolded. A violent and fast storm hit the area with some of the strongest winds locals said they had ever felt. Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman, said he saw a flare pierce the darkness shortly after 4. Minutes later, the yacht was underwater. Only dozens of cushions from the boat’s deck and a gigantic radar from its mast floated on the surface of the sea, fishermen said. In all, 22 people were on board, 15 of whom were rescued. Six bodies — five passengers and the ship’s cook — had been recovered by Thursday afternoon, including that of Mr. Lynch, an Italian government official said, adding that the search was continuing for his daughter. It was a tragic and mystifying turn of events for Mr. Lynch, 59, who had spent years seeking to clear his name and was finally inaugurating a new chapter in his life. Experts wondered how a $40 million yacht, so robust and stable could have been sunk by a storm near a port within minutes. “It drives me insane,” said Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company, Perini, that made the Bayesian. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.” The aura of misfortune only deepened when it emerged that Stephen Chamberlain, 52, a former vice president of finance for Mr. Lynch’s former company and a co-defendant in the fraud case, was killed two days earlier, when he was hit by a car while jogging near his house in England. Since June, the two men had been in a jubilant mood. A jury in San Francisco had acquitted both on fraud charges that could have sent them to prison for two decades. There were hugs and tears, and they and their legal teams went for a celebratory dinner party at a restaurant in the city, said Gary S. Lincenberg, a lawyer for Mr. Chamberlain. The sea excursion was meant as a thank-you by Mr. Lynch to those who had helped him in his legal travails. Among the guests was Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a scion of a prominent New York family of lawyers who had represented Mr. Lynch for 12 years. He and his wife, Neda, 57, were among the missing. So, too, was Jonathan Bloomer, 70, a veteran British insurance executive who chaired Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox. The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered. All the other crew members survived. Among them was Leo Eppel, 19, of South Africa, who was on his first yacht voyage working as a deck steward, said a friend, who asked not to be identified. Since the sinking, the recovery effort and investigation have turned the tiny port town of Porticello, a quiet enclave where older men sit bare-chested on balconies, into what feels like the set of a movie. Helicopters have flown overhead. Ambulances have sped by with the sirens blaring. The Coast Guard has patrolled the waters off shore, within sight of a cordoned-off dock that had been turned into an emergency headquarters. On Wednesday afternoon, a church bell tolled after the first body bag was loaded into an ambulance, a crowd watching in silence. The survivors were sheltering in a sprawling resort near Porticello, with a view of the shipwreck spot, and had so far declined to comment. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said that the yacht had most likely been hit by a fierce “down burst” — when air generated within a thunderstorm descends rapidly — or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water. He added that his agency had put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about storms and strong winds. Locals said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” Mr. Costantino, the boat executive, said the yacht had been specifically designed for having a tall mast — the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world. He said the Bayesian was an extremely safe and secure boat that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. But he said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, is to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck. 12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. So far none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened that night. Fabio Genco, the director of Palermo’s emergency services, who treated some of the survivors, said that the victims had recounted feeling as if the boat was being lifted, then suddenly dropped, with objects from the cabins falling on them. The Italian Coast Guard said it had deployed a remotely operated vehicle that can prowl underwater for up to seven hours at a depth of more than 980 feet and record videos and images that they hoped would help them reconstruct the dynamics of the sinking. Such devices were used during the search and rescue operations of the Titan vessel that is believed to have imploded last summer near the wreckage of the Titanic. After rescuers broke inside the yacht, they struggled to navigate the ropes and many pieces of furniture cluttering the vessel, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for Italy’s national firefighter corps. Finally, as of Thursday morning, they had managed to retrieve all but one of the missing bodies, and hopes of finding the missing person alive were thin. “Can a human being be underwater for two days?” Mr. Cari asked. What was certain was that Mr. Lynch’s death was yet another cruel twist of fate for a man who had spent years seeking to clear his name. He earned a fortune in technology and was nicknamed Britain’s Bill Gates. But for more than a decade, he had been treated as anything but a respected tech leader. He was accused by Hewlett-Packard, the American technological pioneer that had bought his software company, Autonomy, for $11 billion, of misleading it about his company’s worth. (Hewlett-Packard wrote down the value of the transaction by about $8.8 billion, and critics called it one of the worst deals of all time .) He had been increasingly shunned by the British establishment that he sought to break into after growing up working-class outside London. He was extradited to San Francisco to face criminal charges, and confined to house arrest and 24-hour surveillance on his dime. In a townhouse in the Pacific Heights neighborhood — with security people he jokingly told associates were his “roommates” — he spent his mornings talking with researchers whom he funded personally on new applications for artificial intelligence. Afterward, he devoted hours to discussing legal strategy with his team. Despite his persistent claims of innocence, even those close to Mr. Lynch had believed his odds of victory were slim. Autonomy’s chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted in 2018 of similar fraud charges and spent five years in prison. During Mr. Lynch’s house arrest, his brother and mother died. His wife, Angela Bacares, frequently flew over from England, and she became a constant presence in the San Francisco courtroom during the trial. After he was finally acquitted, Mr. Lynch had his eye on the future. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” he said. It had six guest bedrooms - one master, three doubles, and two twins - holding 12 people, and could carry another 10 crew members. British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments. Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues. Here's what we know so far:  What happened? The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time.  Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn. Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank.  "Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said.  "The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters. Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht. "They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added.  Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters. "The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said. Rescuers recover the body of one of the people aboard the Bayesian.  ( AP: Lucio Ganci ) Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared. Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard. Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres. Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said. The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families". Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event.  Who is missing? Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing.  They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said. Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone. "I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said. Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas. Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy.  The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.  He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006.  He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million.  HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal. As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges.  He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling.  He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year.  Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion.  Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field." The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.
