Scape 39 : Mini Review

South African Scape Yachts builds its Simonis-Voogd-designed 39-foot catamaran with epoxy, E-glass, and PVC foam core using a vacuum method. On the platform thus created, it offers a variety of versions designed to fill a number of roles, from multi-passenger dayboat to high-performance cruiser. In the latter configuration, which it calls the Sport Cruiser, it can accommodate up to eight people for extended cruising, although in quarters the builder says are less luxurious than found in most cruising cats. Rather than a full-width bridgedeck saloon, it has a narrower pod-like structure that’s not directly connected to the accommodations in the hulls.

High bridgedeck clearance, light weight, and daggerboards all contribute to the Scape 39’s high performance while a central command console enables one person to handle it efficiently. www.themultihullsource.com

39' 2019 Scape 40 Sport

"DUAL FLYER"

Dual Flyer is a stunning 40' Scape Yacht. The owner has said she turned out better than he could have ever expected and sails better than originally advertised. This is a twin cabin layout with an open deck for entertaining that also includes single bunks in each bow. Dual Flyer includes a salon and full galley that is easily accessible in each hull. This is a mid engine boat with saildrives which increases maneuverability under power and will turn on a dime. The North Sails have been upgraded to their NorLam cross-linked PET resin system. This further reduces heat, water, and UV degradation in a performance sail. This an great sailing catamaran with an open layout and an abundance of amenities.

Dual Flyer can be sailed short handed with all lines and winches controlled from one central location. She includes asymmetrical dagger boards to create lift for a faster pace overwater, easily reaching 25 knots. The entire catamaran, including hulls and benches are manufactured with epoxy and foam sandwich construction throughout (no wood). Both the main sail and jib are self-tacking. To increase durability, longevity, and further weight savings, all stanchions are made of carbon fiber. In big seas, the bridgedeck is a meter off the water encouraging the boat to not slam and stay dry as each hull is designed to be closed off for a water tight seal.

The narrow wave piercing hulls and bridge deck are constructed from the highest-grade Lloyds approved materials. The vacuumed epoxy / foam construction results in a seamless, super lightweight and yet stiff laminate. The interior surfaces are devoid of liners keeping the weight low and allowing for easy cleaning. Bulkheads and cabinetry are integrated into the hull construction both vertically and horizontally adding to the strength and stiffness.

Aft Deck & Cockpit

The U-shaped helming cockpit encompasses the sleek and stylish helm station with a vast array of electronic equipment and carbon wheel. The main track and winch station are all easily controlled in and around this area whether in cruising or race mode. The huge drop down table turns into a perfect daybed.

The hand crafted, seamless construction ensure the Scape 40’ Adventurer is extremely light (6.5 tons), very fast and has beautiful interior finishes. Speeds in access of 20 knots are easily achieved with the modern design, rig and sails. In light wind conditions, attach a screecher or an asymmetric spinnaker to your bow-sprit to boost performance to speeds equivalent to wind speed.

With all sheets, engine controls and navigation equipment, the helm station allows the skipper to control the entire vessel from one central point, making shorthanded sailing a breeze.

The new Saloon area can double up as extra sleeping quarters or relaxation area. The dining table with its telescopic base can easily be set lower to make this area into a double bed.

The new Galley has more than ample storage areas, with Corian tops and Virtifrigo refrigeration fridge and freezer unit. The gas oven with three plate gas burners and covered sink with hot and cold water ensure you will have everything necessary to cater for your every need.

The Scape 40' Adventurer has an indoor / outdoor theme, with ample space to relax and enjoy your wonderful surroundings. The wrap round windows can be covered to provide you with extra shade, and yet still have good visibility.

Both aft bunks offer plenty of room and can be fitted with all the comforts of home. With ample storage space and Swiss Mate mattress you are sure to have a peaceful night sleep.

The Scape 40' Adventurer is made for people who love to sail and explore remote and exotic places. The yacht is designed for adventure sailing, and is the ideal platform for diving, fishing, snorkelling, kite boarding etc and can easily do a ocean crossing.

The Scape 40’ Adventurer can be fitted with retractable asymmetric curved dagger-boards which increases the angle into the wind and speeds of 12 knots are easily achieved upwind. Or retract them and decrease drag for downwind blasts. Alternatively you have a choice between low aspect keels and beach-able keels for shallow draft island hopping and beaching.

Specialist in hybrid motorized catamarans, Nova Luxe have retained the excellent Simonis/Voogd-designed hulls. Their Elite 44 looks like it’s going to be more powerful and even more comfortable: it will be lengthened, a large solar panel will be added, and a complete overhaul of the interior is on the program. As for the build, the hulls will still be made in South Africa, as will the installation of the bulkheads. The finishing and the installation of equipment will be carried out in Florida. The launch of the first Elite 44 is scheduled for the spring of 2022. Note that Scape has the molds for 40 and 51-foot sailing catamarans. These two models will now be marketed under the brand name Nova Luxe Sailing and will of course be equipped with electric propulsion.

This was by far the best thing my group and I did while visiting Hawaii. Response to book was prompt, we were able to book 2 days before the actual boat tour which we thought would be impossible. We were greeted by Captain Rich & Josh upon arrival. They were super informative and accommodating. I would highly recommend these two! 10/10 All in all, they made us feel very welcomed and they were super chill and let us do our thing. I’m surprised they were even able to put up with our group. lol The boat was well equipped, spacious, and clean! Definitely exceeded my expectation. It was our last night in Hawaii and we all agreed that this was the perfect way to wrap up our vacation with the sunset tour. I would do this again over and over again. Please don’t think about booking, just do it. You will have the best time just like we all did!

Meet Escape! Our new 50’ custom built catamaran powered by two 350hp outboard motors that push us along at an average speed of 21mph! Escape was designed with an eye for luxury with her satellite TV, beer and wine bar, bluetooth sound system, fresh water showers, and restroom on board. Escape’s layout and features ensure that everyone has a great time on board! Safety was also a huge component in her design with USCG inspections during construction, annual USCG check ups, and 2 forms of night vision to ensure we can safely navigate after dark. Hop aboard for a day or night we promise you won’t forget!

W ith miles of golden sand beaches stretching along its western flank; gorgeous temples, mosques and churches dotted around the villages and hillsides; internationally revered Michelin restaurants; a culturally rich and recently regenerated old town ; a well connected international airport; plus an armada of long tail boats anchored on the shores ready to drive you out on trips around the inlets, it’s easy to see why Phuket has maintained its spot as Thailand ’s most popular island for decades.

Thailand buzz is currently oscillating across the world, partly thanks to the imminent arrival of the next installation of the hit HBO show The White Lotus – the third season wrapped filming in the country earlier this year. Due to be released in 2025, the show could easily bring higher tourist numbers than ever to the country.

But in Phuket , where gridlock traffic jams on the roads and lack of space on the beaches are already frequent complaints, it makes you wonder: does this island need an influx? Is it time to swap Phuket for another Thai destination on your next trip?

The heir apparent, and seamless alternative, to Phuket is Koh Samui , the verdant palm-lined favourite in the Gulf of Thailand. There are strong parallels between the two islands. Firstly, Samui also has an airport – some would say the cutest airport in the world, consisting of quaint wooden gazebo departure gates surrounded by thriving flower beds – so notions of bumpy ferries and catamarans to reach the island can be cast aside.
