Yacht life definitely pays.
Week after week on Below Deck , viewers see the crew clean up with giant wads of cash left behind by the charter guests as a "tip" for their work -- and chief stewardess Kate Chastain tells ET, it's not faked for reality TV.
"On a yacht of that size, [a good tip] would be $5,000 a person, for seven days of work," she reveals. "Five grand a crew member, usually. Our charters are a little bit shorter, just so we can make the show, [but] everything else is exactly the same. So, it's prorated. We usually get around $2,500, $2,000. Anything less than $1,000 would be depressing, which sounds crazy, doesn't it?"
Below Deck charters typically last two or three days, but Kate says the crew puts in the equivalent of five days of work to jam-pack the experience with a week's worth of fun.
"We're working not just eight-hour shifts, it's like, we're working pretty much around the clock," she notes. "All the days start to blur together. And during the tip meeting, Captain Lee [Rosbach], will say what we got and I'm always like, 'Is that good? I don’t know anymore… $3,000, are we happy with this?'"
To put this in perspective, those tips are on top of a fee for charting the yachts. Kate previously revealed to ET that it costs about $150,000 a week to take over the ships.
The tips come on top of a regular salary, which differs based on job. A chief stew, reportedly , earns between $62,000 and $75,000 per charter season on a Below Deck -sized yacht (most of the vessels on the show are in the 150-foot range). Second and third stews would make about $50,000 a season, a chef between $70,000 and $95,000, while a captain would earn $120,000 or more, a bosun about $52,000 and deckhands between $40,000 to $52,000.
Kate says there is one part of the tip process seen on the show that might just be for TV -- how the tip is delivered. On the show, the crew stands in line to send off the guests, with the primary charter guest handing over an envelope of cash to Captain Lee. Kate notes that the lineup is standard, but the envelope handoff isn’t.
"There's always a lineup, just 'cause it's polite," she says. "Like, even in Downton Abbey , they all line up. So, I think it's a tradition that’s been around for hundreds of years, but sometimes, I think, instead of traveling with so much cash, they wire the money."
"So, it's not as dramatic," she continues. "But I've had charters where we anchored in the British Virgin Islands, the guests had left, we're eating leftover lobster, drinking leftover champagne, counting our stacks of cash. I felt pretty special at that moment."
Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.

Below Deck: What’s the highest and lowest tip received on Bravo show?
What’s the highest and lowest tip received on Below Deck? That’s the question on fans’ minds after a disappointing tip was given on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 2.
Charter guest Barrie Drewitt-Barlow came under fire for leaving a $15,000 tip for a four-day, three-night charter. Fans thought, considering his wealth and demands, the tip should have been far higher.
Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5 guest Justin Thornton left $17,000 after having chef Hindrigo “Kiko” Lorran pull off a 72-plate, six-course dinner. Bravo flashed an average tip of $20,000 across the screen at the tip meeting, and cameras showed an upset crew.
Those are just two examples of tips gone bad, but not all tips are low. Most charter guests tip a proper amount, and one even exceeded expectations.
Since Below Deck has eight seasons’ worth of charter guests, several demanding, let’s take a look at the highest and lowest of the series.
What’s the highest tip received on Below Deck?
The average tip amount on the yachting show ranges from $15,000-$20,000.
Captain Lee Rosbach revealed on the podcast Side Piece with Melissa Pfeister that ironically, the best tip ever received on Below Deck came from one of his least favorite guests, Timothy Sykes.
Fans will recall Timothy appeared on Seasons 2 and 5 of the series. The first time around, Timothy left $17,000 after revealing he took $5,000 back because dinner for a young woman he was dating was screwed up.
Timothy redeemed himself in Season 5, well, at least tip-wise, leaving the crew a whopping $30,000. It’s the highest tip ever on Below Deck, but Captain Lee will never have Timothy back on the show.
What’s the lowest tip received on Below Deck?
There are a couple of instances in terms of the lowest tip ever received on the show.
The first charter in the Below Deck franchise was cut short due to drugs being brought onboard the Honor. Captain Lee immediately took the group back to the dock then told them the charter was over.
His moves did not sit well with the group. The guests did not leave a tip at all. They didn’t have a charter either, so that’s not the lowest tip in the series.
The lowest tip in the Below Deck series came during Season 8. UNLV quarterback Max Gilliam and his friend Dax Nittolo were the primary guests on a charter full of twenty-somethings. They left the crew $12,000 after displaying rich kid antics the entire charter.
There it is Below Deck fans, the highest and lowest tips received by the crew on the show.

Want to Work on a Yacht? 'Below Deck' Star Daisy Kelliher Shares Tips on Breaking Into the Industry
Get ready to set sail on the career of a lifetime. (Bravo show not included.)
Fred Jagueneau/Bravo
Daisy Kelliher, chief stew on Below Deck Sailing Yacht may be a star in front of Bravo cameras — but her role behind the scenes doesn't stop when filming does. In fact, despite how cool she makes the high-pressure job look, it's taken her years, and a variety of gigs, to get to where she is today.
“I got into yachting because I wanted to travel,” she shared with Travel + Leisure . “So I went and studied hotel management and then went and worked in London for two years, but quickly I realized this isn't really for me.”
Rather than work behind a desk, Kelliher jetted down to Antibes and hopped aboard her first two boats that stopped in Cannes, St. Tropez, and Monaco. And now, she’s here to share her tips on breaking into the industry — cameras not included.
Get Some Hospitality Experience Under Your Belt
According to Kelliher, a good yachting career begins with gaining basic hospitality experience, be it in restaurants, cafes, hotels, or anywhere consumer-facing.
“You need to have every edge right on your CV to make you stand out,” she said. The next step is to pair this with what she calls the “essentials,” which are your basic certifications , which cover safety and medical emergencies.
Try an Agency
Those starting out, or even seasoned veterans looking for new roles, should try signing up for the various agencies like The Crew Network , which help match crew members with available vessels.
“I definitely recommend that people sign up for the agencies. There are endless amounts on the internet. Small ones, large ones, loads of Facebook groups,” Kelliher said.
Additionally, location is everything — make sure to physically be where the boats are, should you get a call.
“If you want it, go to where the boats are at,” she said.
Be Ready for the Reality of Six Weeks at Sea
If you’ve seen the show you know what crew quarters look like. The rooms are small, and roommate relationships can be tough, so be certain you can stomach both the rocky waters and rocky relationship dynamics.
“I think you either get it or you don't,” Kelliher shared. “For me, it was kind of a no-brainer. I went to boarding school. I shared a room with my sister. It was so natural for me. Even now, it just doesn't phase me. Yeah. Sharing a room, sharing my space.”
If you’re heading out for your first work trip, Kelliher suggests paring down your toiletries and personal items to the bare essentials to ensure you’re not encroaching on your roommate’s space, and to maximize your own living area.
“There really is no middle ground,” she said. “I really think you're either okay with it or you're not.”
Decide if You’re Better Suited for Adventure or Luxury
Not all boats look the same. Be it sailing — like Parsifall III, which viewers have seen Kelliher flex her skills on — or motor, charter or private yachts, there are options for everyone. You just need to think about what kind of career path you’d prefer.
“I definitely think people who work on sailboats and people who charter sailboats really do want to be out in the water a bit more,” Kelliher said, adding that sailing is “a little bit more relaxed. It's smaller.”
Additionally, Kelliher notes that the service on a motor yacht can call for a bit more luxury, as sailing vessels can’t run washing machines and dryers while sailing, nor can they put out fine dining plates and cups with the sails up, meaning the crew can get away with a little more low-key of a setup. That said, it also means crew members need to make up for the difference in providing a lot more fun, and working even harder to adapt to elements — so no matter what you’ll be working hard.
Understand That Traveling Is For Down Days
Yes, this job will most certainly help you get to different destinations around the world, but as Kelliher points out, it’s still a job. And that means that all personal travel will be done on off days or in between seasons.
“You've got boats like Below Deck that are heavy charters, you're not going see anything,” she explained.
However, the trade off here, she notes, is on the boats doing longer sailings, there’s serious cash to be had.
“But if you're there to travel, definitely they're not the boats you want to get on," she said. "You want to get on the private boats.”
On the privately owned vessels, Kelliher says, crew are more often treated as family as they stay with the families for longer stretches of time, allowing for more of a personal relationship, where crew are often invited on outings or allowed more personal time to enjoy a destination.
“It usually doesn't pay as well, but, in my opinion, I think the experiences make up for it."
As for if she’d do it all again, Kelliher didn’t hesitate.
“I definitely would…I think I made a good decision. It really suited my life.” She paused, and then gave a knowing grin before reiterating, “I think I made a good decision.”

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Recap: Tom Goes Overboard
Below deck sailing yacht.
We are back aboard the Parsifal III under the guidance of our fearless, gentle, and patient captain, Glenn Shephard, who is doing the best he can to keep the ship from crashing and burning — literally. A sailing superyacht isn’t a motorboat (a floating hotel), and Daisy, Gary, and Colin are back to parent this season’s waddling ducklings: Gabriela, Ashley, Kelsie, and Tom — may his memory be a blessing (we’ll get into that later).
To recap the past six episodes: Everyone’s favorite Lothario, Gary, has already kissed three of the four women onboard; Chef Marcos literally gets scalped by the boat; infamous guest Erica Rose returns with her man-child of a husband, Chuck (and only leaves a $6,500 tip); and we learn that Kelsie flosses her teeth with her hair. Plus Daisy is absolutely #girlbossing it up.
It’s been relatively smooth sailing (sorry) up to this point, but our beloved yachties decided to serve us a full-ass meal as we approach the season’s halfway point. The simmering stew tension between Ashley and Gabriela — which started with passive aggression over proper hospital corners — is finally boiling over, love triangles are transforming into love quadrangles, jobs are in jeopardy, and even easygoing Chef Marcos is dipping his toe into the drama.
After Tom from Northern England (not to be confused with Zac Efron) lets the anchor drag (in landlubber speak: a major fucking problem that could have resulted in a shipwreck!), Captain Glenn has no choice but to send him packing. At the top of the episode, Tom whispers, “I think Glenn’s going to fire me,” and, babe, he’s right! To see the cool and congenial Captain Glenn get worked up — a.k.a. calmly tell a crew agent on the phone, “I’m looking for a deckhand, and I need somebody pretty soon” — is nothing short of shocking and signifies the gravity of Tom’s mistake. This is Captain Glenn we are talking about! He’s a man of the people who shares a room with common deckhands! He tolerated Tom’s drunken vom session just a few weeks ago, but it seems a line has finally been drawn — and the line is Tom potentially wrecking the boat and ending the season.
Before Tom gets canned, he has a chat with Gary to try and get an idea as to where the big boss’s head is at. All Gary has to say is that the issue is above his pay grade. He’s the first mate, not your best mate, Tommy boy! Gary may be our favorite playboy, but it’s important to remember that he’s actually really good at his job. Instead of spending the morning proving himself to the captain, Tom lounges around and says things like “I’ve been inside her,” about Ashley. Captain Glenn is livid (mildly agitated) and calls Tom down to the mess the next morning to let him go, informing him that a tender will whisk him away within an hour.
I want to reiterate how difficult getting fired from this show is. Tom had one job on his overnight shift: anchor-watch, and he failed at this, risking the safety of the superyacht and the lives of everyone aboard. This, in addition to the laundry list of minor mistakes he has made this season? He’s out!
Side note: I feel for Captain Glenn, who only wants to sail the seas and show the guests a good time, not flex on a deckhand or fire someone mid-season. But here we are.
Like the utmost professional he is, Captain Glenn immediately calls the department heads to the wheelhouse to relay the news and informs Colin that he’ll be straddling double duty until a new deckhand joins the team. Tom makes a last-ditch apology to Ashley — who, just moments earlier, was shit-talking him with Gabriela (“That’s why he needs to fucking go”) — by saying to her in the laundry room, “Anything I did ever say was not me; it was just me under alcohol. I didn’t mean it.” LOL, okay. Can he take accountability for anything? Maybe this is why Ashley famously doesn’t date guys her own age … Anyway, she, with the gravity of a Real Housewife, tells him, “I know, I know,” before admitting that even though she’ll miss him, his firing is “probably the best thing.” Way harsh, Tai! They hug, she continues ironing, and then Tom hops on the tender in a pair of jorts and Oakleys, sailing away from Sailing Yacht for good.
Let’s take a moment to remember Tom and the lesson he learns: “to never have sex with the woman (Ashley) who wants to have sex with your boss (Gary).” Moment over! Cheers, mate!
Tom’s absence means the crew is short-staffed, but more important, it means there is a shift in the onboard hookup dynamics — and no more competition for Gary. With Tom gone, Ashley is down to one option: Gary, whom she kissed the first night before starting a romance with Tom. Let’s also recall that Gary and Daisy had a drunken hot-tub makeout, which Daisy denies despite cameras capturing the moment in all its tequila-soaked glory. In this episode’s final scene, the pair get into it over crew-wake-up times (so boring and obviously code for horniness), so I suspect this enemies-to-lovers arc will come full circle shortly. Meanwhile, Gabriela also has her sights set on Gary: Last week, she hopped into his bed and apparently touched “his wee-wee.” While stew one and two compete for Gary, Kelsie confides in Ashley that she hopes she can get some action with the new deckhand, and, honestly, I’m ready for her to get hot and heavy with someone. I want to see Kelsie’s freak flag fly! Hair floss in the bedroom? That’s some extremely Robert Pattinson shit.
The guests on this charter, Colorado businessman Jim Blumenthal & Co., are uncomfortably horny in a middle-aged-couples-on-vacation way and keep a stream of pervy jokes flowing. It’s not inappropriate — unlike Gabriela’s interaction with the primary guest McCordia Young in the season premiere — but it is weird. They crack shocker jokes, say they’ll take a throuple with Marcos, do topless-tapas wordplay, and enthusiastically agree with Colin deeming Big Jim the “horniest man” you’ll ever meet. Big Jim is suspicious to me — who wakes up at 6 a.m. to enjoy the sunrise while on vacation?
They also put in the deranged request of a talent show starring the crew (this poor understaffed crew!), which comes as no surprise after Ken, one of the guests, shows up to night one’s dinner in a full matador costume. Daisy voices what we’re all thinking in a confessional: “It’s frustrating when we’re asked requests like a talent show because I don’t have fucking time to think of a bloody talent. Pretty much the only thing I’m good at is getting tan and drinking margaritas.” Colin also sneaks in a jab while introducing the crew: “Believe it or not, we all have full-time jobs, so it was a really tall order to put this together.” Will this mini–guilt trip yield a bigger tip? Only time (and talent) will tell …
Daisy and Gabriela perform a little salsa number, Captain Glenn pulls off a dirty joke, Marcos spins a platter (in addition to whipping them up an entire “seafood-palooza”), Kelsie and Ashley do some sort of hoedown dance (?), Colin croons an original song with a lyric dedicated to each charter guest, and Gary “the Lady-Killer” King officially enters his Magic Mike era and gives Big Jim a lap dance. We still don’t know how lucrative Gary’s striptease is — the tip comes next week — but if the episode’s title, “Strip for the Tip,” means anything, I’m expecting these guests to pay up.
From the Galley
• The guests decide that “Chad” is the male version of “Karen,” with “Kevin” as a close contender.
• Tom, spritzing himself with cologne upon leaving: “Come in smelling good, go out smelling good.”
• Guest Ken: “That is the most sophisticated sailing control I have ever seen.” Guest Jim: “Have you seen Chris’s vibrator?”

‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht’: Daisy Kelliher on That Love Triangle, Baby News & What’s Next
Below Deck Sailing Yacht
- ‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ Star Daisy Kelliher Opens Up About Freezing Her Eggs
- ‘Below Deck’ Star Gary King Accused of Sexual Misconduct By Former Crew Member
Daisy Kelliher weathered a storm of drama between Gary King and Colin Macrae last season on Below Deck Sailing Yach t . The chief stew hoped to move past the tumultuous love triangle and focus on the job at hand during Season 5.
That proves to be easier said than done with Kelliher having to work alongside King, who also returns as first mate. The two department heads once again report to Captain Glenn Shephard aboard the Parsifal III. This time around the vessel ventures to Ibiza, a noted island party paradise. Rounding out the crew are Chef Cloyce Martin, Chief Engineer Davide Morosi, stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren, and deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch.
Before the new season sets sail, Kelliher gets candid on what’s to come, addresses her baby plans and more.
Given everything that happened last season, did you have any trepidation coming back?
Daisy Kelliher: I love Captain Glenn. I know the boat. I know what to expect. It’s always a good time, whether tears are involved or not.
What were your thoughts on working with Gary again?
You know initially I was fine with it. After Season 4 we were fine. The reunion, which was close to the filming of the new season really resurfaced everything. For Colin, Gary, and I, everything ended quite amicably. Colin and I ended amicably. Gary and I were fine, but the reunion really brought up a lot for everyone. Things turned from fine to quite bad. So, that was unfortunate going into having to film this season after that reunion. After that, I was not too happy being back on board with Gary, to be honest.
Did you find Colin not coming back this season made things a little easier?
I think if the reunion hadn’t happened, I would have absolutely worked with Colin again. There was no massive hostility. There was of course the breakup, but the reunion unfortunately too much was said. It got too hostile. I think if I had to walk onto that boat with both of them, I don’t know. I did feel quite ganged up on during the reunion. To see both of them, I would have struggled more. I think having just one was easier than the two.
Pictured: Gary King — (Photo by: Fred Jagueneau/Bravo)
Right out of the gate, you and Gary have a talk. How important was that for you to have this conversation at the beginning of the season and get those emotions out? Maybe helped eliminate some of that initial uneasiness.
That conversation was post-reunion. We filmed the reunion a few days before. I tried to speak to him, but he didn’t want to speak to me. Going on, I had a lot of emotions that he is able to just go on and put away. I’m not like that. For me, it was very important. I wish we had done it off-camera. That’s why I attempted to speak to him before. I didn’t want it to be on camera and bring this on to the new season.
He didn’t want to have that conversation. I was then like, “Well, we’re just going to have to have it now then.” Yeah, it was important. I’m not the type of person who is going to be tight-lipped. If someone hurt me or upset me or I feel they’ve done bad to me, it was important for me to say, “I’m not okay with it. I’m not going to be treated like this by anybody.” It was a good start to the season. At the same time, so much damage had been done it wasn’t going to be resolved with one conversation, unfortunately.
How was it being in Ibiza? It’s known as this party place. How did that factor into your crew’s nights out?
It was awesome. We were excited to be there. It was actually my fourth season on Below Deck and the first season we were really out of COVID protocol. I was like, “We get to go dancing? Interact with other people?” They were like, “Yeah.” Other shows got to go dancing. Ibiza was perfect for that. I got to do more of that. It was great.
How does the interior staff measure up this season? It seems Danni has this big personality. It seems like she might be a challenge for you.
This season was a challenge because I had never worked with stews like that. They were certainly capable to an extent. You’ll see. Danni was definitely a challenge. She definitely has a big personality and a bigger personality than Diana, and I think Diana fell into a trap there. That’s the best way I can describe it. I was going through a lot of personal turmoil after the reunion. There was stuff online. I was struggling mentally. So to have this kind of girl be up in my face much of the season. It was interesting. There is definitely a bit of a rollercoaster with that. They are okay at their job. At times good, but for me, it was a real challenge. For me, this will be interesting to watch how that played out.
You never know what you’re going to get with a chef. Cloyce is this young gun who is very confident. There is a lot of stress that builds as you’re working on that first charter and you’re trying to get your footing. How would you describe working with him?
Cloyce is such an interesting person to work with. Again, someone I never experienced. Some days I couldn’t say anything and thought I was walking on water. I would think, “This is easy-going.” Then other days he was completely disrespectful. Sometimes he would be funny and other times annoying. Sometimes he would put out great food and other times I’m like, “What is this?” You never knew what you were getting with him. He kept me on my toes. He was a good addition to the season. It was interesting, and we love interesting.
What can you tease about the guests? We have some great guests. We got guests who almost got us fired. We’ve got guests who are complaining and aren’t happy, which we hate but viewers love. We’ve got some Bravo people coming on, Detox from RuPaul’s Drag Race . We had a great mix of guests this year.
Fred Jagueneau/Bravo
How was working with Captain Glenn this season and the crew he has to manage?
I don’t think Glenn was a happy camper this year. There were a few incidents he had to have some stern talking with the crew. There were some difficult conversations he had to have. It was another challenging season. It’s never smooth sailing, and this year is no different.
You declare at the start of the season that you are “staying away from the D” and just focusing on the job. Do your eyes wander?
I certainly gave it a good try, but six weeks is a long time on a boat. I’m not going to give too much away. You’ll have to wait and see, but all I’ll say is six weeks is a long time on a boat.
'Below Deck Sailing Yacht' Star Daisy Kelliher Opens Up About Freezing Her Eggs
You’ve been very public about freezing your eggs as you plan ahead to when you want a baby. Why was it important for you to share your story?
I think there is a responsibility that comes with being an influencer or TV personality or anybody with a public platform. I think there are certain things in my life I try to keep as private as possible, but I think there is a social responsibility there. It’s the same when I shared about my sister’s [scooter accident] and reminded people to wear their helmets and have travel insurance.
It’s the same with the egg freezing. People support me in my journey. Being a public figure,I do feel there is a public responsibility there to be vulnerable and share my story. It’s easy to follow people and see them live their perfect lives, but that’s not going to help anyone. If anything, that does more damage. I think stepping into this role for the last four years now, I think you have to give it your all and that means being vulnerable and showing my life isn’t perfect. I want to show the challenges I face and show people they are not alone. I try to take my role as seriously as possible, which means showing that private side.
