Dubai: An Unforgettable Destination and the Superyacht Hub of the Middle East

By Frances Flannagan

Dubai is renowned for being a Middle Eastern haven, exuding glitz and glamour alongside a rich heritage and culture. Unsurprisingly, the luxe and spectacular nature of Dubai has become a significant and growing hub for the superyacht industry, and the annual Dubai International Boat Show has become a key player in elevating the destination’s exposure to the world of yachting.

Dubai was established just three hundred years ago as a small fishing village, growing into a regional trading hub in the early 20th century, with continued growth ever since. It is now the most populous city in the UAE , a hub for both regional and international trade, and a city heavily involved in the tourism and luxury markets, making it an obvious choice for people looking for an unparalleled Middle Eastern experience.

As a destination, Dubai boasts an extraordinary amount of offerings for visitors. It is renowned for being a city with a remarkably iconic landscape, famously featuring a spectacle of skyscrapers that is also home to the tallest building in the world. What makes Dubai so special is that, whilst it is a space of bustling city life, it has managed to maintain its historical allure, seamlessly transitioning from a modern metropolis to a cultural oasis. From wandering around the old town markets to camel racing in the desert, visitors can become completely immersed in every aspect of this wonderful city, seemingly shifting through time to witness Dubai’s historical DNA alongside its contemporary brilliance.

Drawing upon its fishing-town heritage, Dubai has also sustained its strong connection to the sea, showcased through the development of some of the world’s best man-made islands and marinas. Its rich maritime history and remarkable developments can be exampled by the largest marina in the region, Dubai Harbour, whose marina can welcome superyachts up to 160m to anchor, alongside an array of food and beverage options, luxury living opportunities and superyacht services.

An event that has aided the growth of the world of yachting is the iconic Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS). First held in 1992 as a modest event focused on the local maritime industry, the show has rapidly grown in size and popularity and is now recognised as one of the world’s most prestigious boat shows and one of the largest yachting events in the Middle East. 2024 marks the 30th edition of the show, with this milestone guaranteeing the event to be bigger and better than ever before.

Not only a hub for industry experts and boating enthusiasts from all over the world to connect, the show offers a plethora of luxury showcases from superyachts and hypercars, to watersports toys and yacht-focused fashion. The impressive offerings of the show, however, are not the only reason why DIBS holds a significant place in the superyacht calendar year; this opulent event has also continually worked to elevate the superyacht industry in the Middle East. Held in the wonderful location of Dubai Harbour, Dubai’s connection to the Arabian Sea is rekindled, positioning the city as an important nautical hub. Notably, the Middle East and North Africa region has the second highest fleet-to-billionaire ratio globally, DIBS therefore being an event which is located in the heart of one of the world’s superyacht hotspots.

The glamorous city of Dubai is a world-class destination for superyachts, representing the height of luxury and the seamless blend between city and beach life. DIBS is an event which encapsulates the city’s strong maritime roots and shows how Dubai has maintained its important spot as a yachting hub within the region, now boasting global recognition as one of the most important boat shows in the world. Its rich history and abundance of offerings are one of the many reasons why the Dubai International Boat Show should be at the top of your must-visit list for the superyacht calendar year.

Explore Abu Dhabi Regions

Marvel at Abu Dhabi's evolving skyline while discovering the emirate by land, air or sea, experience the genuine feel of authentic Arabia while watching the sun set behind red sand dunes, play golf on any of six distinctly diverse golf courses, or savour local and international cuisine sensations.

Boasting three main regions – the UAE capital and its surrounds, Al Ain or the Eastern Region and Al Dhafra, the emirate is a destination of geographic diversity, where visitors can explore natural islands, vast deserts, modern cityscapes, rocky heights, cooling oases and pristine beaches.

Hallmarked by a cultural diversity and an intriguing mix of old and new, we have UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ground-breaking architectural icons, headline adrenaline attractions, award winning golf courses, luxury resorts and some of the region's best shopping malls.

UAE CAPITAL & SURROUNDS

Meaning 'Land of the Gazelle' in Arabic, Abu Dhabi was founded when a young antelope led a wandering tribe to fresh water, on an island with no more than 300 palm ('barasti') huts, a few coral buildings and the Ruler's fort. This simple island settlement has since been transformed into the modern, cosmopolitan city of Abu Dhabi and the high-rise capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Find out more about Abu Dhabi's religion and traditions with a visit to one of the world's most impressive landmarks, the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This architectural marvel, with a capacity for an astonishing 40,000 worshippers, features 80 domes, over 1,000 columns, gold plated chandeliers and the world's largest hand woven carpet.

A one and a half hour drive from Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain is one of the world's oldest permanently inhabited settlements, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city abounds in picturesque forts. One of the UAE's most historic buildings, Al Jahili Fort was erected in 1891 to defend the city and protect precious palm groves and is home to a permanent exhibition of the work of British adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger and his 1940s crossings of the Rub Al Khali (The Empty Quarter) desert. The redeveloped Al Qattara Fort is now home to a brilliant arts centre and gallery, offering hundreds of modern exhibits within its walls and with spaces for a variety of workshops – from pottery and painting to music and calligraphy.

For a real taste of the UAE's most adventurous off-road driving and some of its most incredible and dramatic scenery, including the biggest dunes this side of the Sahara, take a trip to Al Dhafra - the emirate's western region.

'Where the desert meets the sea', Al Dhafra makes up over two thirds of Abu Dhabi emirate. Along its hundreds of kilometres of coastline are stunning beaches and islands and its history is encompassed in the myriad of ancient forts, set against dramatic landscapes.

The top superyachts to charter during the Middle East event season

The Middle East is fast becoming a superyacht destination to rival the more traditional cruising destination of the Caribbean. This year, the packed programme – which includes the FIFA World Cup in Qatar (from 21 November), Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix (17-20 November) and SailGP in Dubai (12-13 November) – will prove an even bigger lure to visiting yachts. While most of the events take place on land, having a superyacht as an after-party destination or home base – particularly when other accommodation options are hard to find – will make the experience even more mind-blowing.

To take in some of the world’s top sporting events from the comfort of a superyacht, Camper & Nicholsons has a fleet of standout superyachts that are ready to charter throughout the Middle East this winter. Here, their team of expert brokers reveal three of the top charter yachts available and explain why they are perfect hosts.

91.5m Tranquility

Already known as a popular choice amongst celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Tranquility is available for charter bookings during this year’s SailGP, Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix and FIFA World Cup. For those looking to attend these events , Tranquility ’s spacious aft deck and two helipads can transform into ideal viewing decks. From here, guests of SailGP, for example, can watch in awe as the competitors – including hydro foiling F50 catamarans – race across the water at speeds of up to 100 km/h.

With accommodation for up to 22 overnight guests and a galley with three first-class chefs, Tranquility has all the amenities needed to host as many sports enthusiasts as possible. Moving guests from deck to shore will also be seamless thanks to the yacht’s fleet of tenders and helipads.

With cryptocurrency payments via BitPay also an option, Tranquility can be chartered from €1,100,000 per week.

Saluzi is not only one of the largest superyachts based in Asia during the winter months, but she is also one of the most eye-catching. Named after an ancient Chinese tale, Saluzi ’s exterior is decorated with modern artwork depicting her namesake. With such colourful looks, Saluzi ’s presence at the FIFA World Cup in Doha, Qatar will not go unnoticed.

During the FIFA World Cup, she will be berthed in Pearl Marina and there is the possibility to host up to 150 guests on board in port with sufficient catering from the team of chefs and 34 crew to make the occasion one to remember. For something even more unforgettable, the crew can transform the main deck’s dining room into a professional karaoke lounge.

Saluzi ’s deck spaces are large enough to house 32 guests in 16 staterooms, as well as an office, an open-air cinema and a spa. With such a selection of versatile areas, Saluzi can cater for anything from entertaining on a grand scale, to a fun holiday with family and friends.

For those who are lucky enough to be on board for the World Cup final, why not extend the trip and go beach hopping in the Persian Gulf. Saluzi 's shallow draft means she can get up close to any coral-studded bays and the stunning shorelines of Asia with ease.

With cryptocurrency payments via BitPay also an option, Saluzi can be chartered from €480,000 per week.

Bring Italian chic to the Middle East, with the classic Baglietto superyacht Burkut . With a berth in Pearl Marina for the entire World Cup, the family-friendly superyacht may stand out from the crowd with her navy hull and white superstructure but the yacht allows guests to enjoy their time in private away from the crowds. Once guests are on board there are two large saloons with Fendi furniture, as well as a formal dining area where guests can gather out of view. The yacht also has a luxury spa complete with a Hammam, sauna and treatment rooms, plus an onboard beauty therapist.

During the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix, SailGP or the FIFA World Cup, Burkut can get geared up to host a pre-race party on the bridge deck. Inside the saloon, a pianist can take to the piano and play while guests arrive. Here, a five-star meal can be served at the outdoor table, with speciality drinks being mixed at the nearby bar. After the event, guests can retire to one of the five luxurious staterooms.

With cryptocurrency payments via BitPay also an option, Burkut can be chartered from $245,000 per week.

Saudi Arabia Superyacht Hotspots

Written By: Karen Hockney

Saudi Arabia is fast becoming the Riviera of the Middle East, drawing a sophisticated in-crowd seeking a stylish and authentic destination.

Saudi 1200x800 Shutterstock 4

Its 3,400 km low-lying coastline is populated by stunning reefs and sandy islands spectacularly backed by hazy mountains and the kingdom is likely to surprise and enthrall first-time visitors in equal measure.

A temperate climate that is perfect during winter months, national parks galore and vast ochre desert plains which segue into the cooler climes of Saudi’s mountainous north mean that this beautiful land positioned on the eastern Red Sea coastline has something to suit all tastes.

The diverse topography is ideal for hikers and numerous archaeological sites offer a fascinating blend of history and beauty. Enjoy the contrasts of Jabal Sawda in Asir National Park, Saudi’s tallest peak which soars over 3,000 metres, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Ahsa Oasis, which dates back 6,000 years and meanders through picturesque springs, wells, canals and farmland.

Beaches score highly too, with Qatif, Ras Tanura and Jubail sure to charm visitors with their tranquillity, natural beauty and diverse marine life. Farasan Al Kabir beach is home to some of the country’s best diving, with mesmerising crystal clear waters and copious underwater vegetation creating a true aquatic paradise. The fact that Saudi Arabia remains one of the globe’s last relatively undiscovered territories as far as dive tourism is concerned only adds to its allure.

With the kingdom currently undergoing a $13 billion tourism development incentive in the Red Sea’s coastal Aseer region, the lure of pristine beaches, stretches of vibrant coral untouched by bleaching and world-beating dive sites will ensure Saudi Arabia enjoys far greater exposure in coming years.

Riyadh’s sand dunes offer sandboarding and dune bashing as well as more spiritual pursuits like kashta, a true Arabian experience which invites travellers to sleep beneath the stars. The desert lakes, surrounded by lush vegetation and dramatic red sand, are also not to be missed.

A modern metropolis which boasts endless stunning views of the Arabian Gulf, Dammam is also a thriving arts, sports and entertainment hub with lush green parks, scenic waterfronts and glorious sandy beaches.

Half Moon Bay

So named for its distinctly lunar outline, Half Moon bay boasts a popular, family friendly shallow cove ideal for learning to scuba dive. Al Khobar waterfront will entrance the whole family with its dancing fountains, landscaped gardens, historic water tower and remarkable King Fahd Causeway as well as copious dining choices and a thriving café culture.

Jeddah enjoys a reputation as one of the most lavish ports in the kingdom and is particularly famous for its legendary seafood and luxe beach clubs. A buzzing cosmopolitan hub which hosts the Red Sea International Film Festival, the city’s traditional heart of Al Balad remains a magical historic quarter, offering a voyage of cultural discovery for visitors.

The northern region of Tabuk is home to some of the best natural beaches and enchanted islands in the world – there are 150 isles dotted off the 1000 km coast of the Arabian Gulf. Little wonder then that Haql, revered for its powdery white sands, has been christened the ‘Maldives of Saudi Arabia’. An added advantage is the half-sunken shipwreck which is easily visible from its wild and untouched stretch of shore, backed by the majestic Sinai mountains.

A popular haunt for nature lovers, Umluj boasts natural springs, non-existent consumerism and turquoise waters which abound with diverse marine life and migrating bird populations fleeing colder climes. Large ships and ferries are banned to preserve the delicate ecosystem.

Numan Island

Just south of Duba, Numan Island is another hidden gem – a dramatic sandy isle with a deep bay which is well-protected from prevailing north-westerly winds and thus perfect for a beach set up.

Superyacht study finds Middle Eastern owners dominate

  • Dubai Boat Show
  • Superyachts

A new study into superyacht ownership has found that Middle Eastern owners own a large proportion of the world’s longest and most luxurious vessels

Ahead of the upcoming Dubai International Boat Show, the Superyacht Builders Association has carried out a survey into the market and found that Middle Eastern owners still dominate.

A grand total of 193 superyachts are owned by high-net-worth individuals from the Middle East – this represents 12% of the global fleet of vessels measuring 40m (131ft) or longer.

The study also found that the average length of a Middle Eastern owned superyacht is 63m (206ft).

However, this figure is dwarfed by the world’s largest superyacht Azzam (pictured above), which is owned by UAE president Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and measures 180m from bow to stern.

The survey also found that the industry is booming, with 755 superyachts over 24m currently under construction, up from 734 last year.

Theo Hooning, secretary general of the Superyacht Builders Association, said: “The demand for superyachts from the Middle East can be classified as fairly stable over the years, while others may have been more volatile.

“The historic demand from this region has been vital for the growth of this sector,” he added.

The 24 th annual Dubai Boat Show opens at Dubai International Marine Club Mina Seyahi on March 1 and runs until March 5. Tickets cost 60 AED (roughly £11) each.

Why charter a yacht in the middle east and the red sea.

A yacht charter in the Middle East offers the chance to visit many stunning and exclusive destinations, each offering its own unforgettable experiences and unique adventures. These destinations are actual yacht charter destinations known for their beauty and variety.

Dubai is famous for its shopping and five-star resorts, with luxury brands lining the Emirate’s numerous malls. While on a luxury yacht charter in Dubai and the Middle East, guests can take advantage of the tax-free retail therapy before heading to one of the many luxury resorts for a day of pampering at the spa, or to soak up some winter sun by the pool. The spectacular towering architecture holds many world-class gastronomic experiences, with Michelin-starred restaurants found in abundance in Dubai. As one of the world’s richest cities, Dubai offers the perfect luxury charter yacht experience.

Abu Dhabi is an exciting, ever-changing charter destination with something to offer everyone looking for warm November weather and outstanding luxury. Home to the F1 racing, Yas Island Marina is a purpose-built superyacht marina with five-star Yas Viceroy hotel and Cipriani restaurant, as well as other activities to enjoy before the action starts at dusk. Head to the Ferrari World theme park to keep the adrenaline junkies on board happy with the world’s fastest roller coaster, or take to the skies in a seaplane tour. The city’s modern attractions are complemented by sites that reflect its rich history and culture.

As the understated, hidden gem of the Middle East, Oman offers plenty of options for adventurous yacht charters that break the traditional mould. Its capital, Muscat, is steeped in history and worthy of a visit during a luxury yacht charter in Dubai and the Middle East. Head to souks in Muttrah for pashminas, spices and frankincense or to the Gold Souk for dazzling displays of jewellery. Oman’s rugged coastline and traditional customs make it an idyllic charter destination.

The Kingdom of Bahrain was one of the first countries in the Persian Gulf to invest in tourism and that has paid off with an established network of museums, luxury hotels, boutique shops and high-end restaurants. Locals claim that diving was invented in waters off Bahrain, with evidence of pearl diving taking place here from more than 5,000 years ago. This superyacht charter destination offers a rich blend of history and modern luxury.

Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea

The Red Sea Coast runs over the western shore of the Gulf of Aqaba and along the eastern coast of mainland Egypt, south of the Gulf of Suez. It is a popular tourist spot due to its delightfully warm climate, warm sea, thousands of kilometers of sand and shore, majestic national parks and fascinating historic landmarks. Only developed for tourists in the 1990s, it is now the place to come for rest and relaxation in the Middle East. The region’s national parks and historic sites offer a diverse range of activities for yacht charter guests.

MAJESTY YACHTS 140: CREST OF THE WAVE

superyacht middle east

After 35 years of designing and producing yachts, has Gulf Craft created its finest model yet in the form of the Majesty 140

superyacht middle east

Gulf Craft’s Um al-Quwain shipyard is located on the Eastern Al Humrah coastline, a mere hour’s drive from YACHTS HQ in Dubai. It’s always a pleasant visit. Life is a lot more relaxed in Um al-Quwain, with the Emirate’s laid back approach to life making a refreshing change from the skyscrapers and eight-lane freeways of Dubai. You’ll always get a toothy smile and a wave from one of Um al-Quwain 72,000 inhabitants; everyone has time for you here and this positive attitude goes some way to explaining the care and detailing put into every vessel produced at the Gulf Craft shipyard.

Almost everything is created and built on site, with the in-house design team improving with every yacht, but with the Majesty 140, the studio has created a sleek, sporty shape – quite possibly the most European-styled Gulf Craft to date. In many ways it makes complete sense, as Majesty’s rivals now hail from Italy and the UK, with the shipyard’s upcoming steel and aluminium megayachts aiming squarely for the Dutch and German builders.

The tri-deck Majesty 140 is the successor of the Majesty 135 and takes a number of its stylistic traits, the main one being the ‘arrow’ that runs through the superstructure. On the 135, this was a soft, rounded and subtle arrowhead, but for the 140, it’s been sharpened, splitting the superstructure lines and adding a sense of movement. A sharp bow leads to a forward-raked windshield with the flow of lines creating the lounge glazing areas before sweeping down to the cockpit. Style comes down to personal taste, but we can’t help thinking that this is one of the most handsome Majesty’s to date.

Launched at the Dubai International Boat Show, the Majesty 140 was understandably one of the stars, and so busy was her viewing schedule (Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum visited her on the Saturday) that the YACHTS team decided to visit her at the shipyard with Gulf Craft’s Mahmoud Itani, in order to spend some quality time on board.

superyacht middle east

Berthed stern-to on the shipyard dock, we step on board straight onto the 140’s broad swim platform/ transformer, where Mahmoud points out that the swim platform and beach club are on the same level – no step down here. Sheltered from the Middle East sun, the beach club is cool and relaxed, with loose furniture supplied by Fiore Rosso by Skyline Design’s luxury outdoor furniture collection. These are one of the few items not produced at the factory, but Gulf Craft still manages to keep the build local, as despite the racy Italian name, Fiore Rosso is actually based in Dubai.

AFT DECK LOUNGE

Heading back out from under the transom door with its integrated rain-showerhead, we hop up the starboard side stairs where Mahmoud stops and opens a hidden flap that reveals the aft control station. It’s just one of the many captain-friendly systems on board – more of that later.

The aft deck lounge is understandably spacious, with a large C-shaped sofa surrounding a split table – perfect for accessing the middle of the sofa, as anyone who’s shuffled around for lunch will tell you. A custom built plant pot sits behind the diners, one of many fitted throughout the Majesty 140 at the request of the Owner.

Before moving in to the main salon, Mahmoud reveals the aft deck’s pièce de résistance, namely, the drop down balconies on each side. A press of a button opens out the cockpit space, making socializing on the aft deck even more desirable. Balconies are no longer anything new, but placing them here, on arguably the superyacht’s busiest area is a work of simple genius. ”Great for fishing, too!” adds Mahmoud, quoting a visitor from the boat show.

superyacht middle east

This 43 metre Majesty was built on spec by the shipyard, with the Owner joining the project at the perfect time – just before the interior designers got on board. This allowed him to work closely with the team, choosing the materials and furnishings, while finalising the overall ambience, which is very much relaxed and friendly.

Two rather inviting, electrically adjustable armchairs greet you at the entrance, with two tables and a pair of sofas forward. This lounge area sits on a very touchy-feely carpet, and here again we have another innovation. The starboard side is devoid of any sort of furniture. This not only adds a metre of extra space, but allows so much natural light in through the huge windows, that it almost feels like an outdoor area. Again, simple genius.

Forward we find the 10-seater dining table, which as well as numerous plant pots, has a chandelier shaped like a boat hull. This slatted look can be seen throughout the Majesty 140’s cabins and lounges, adding a subtle continuity to each deck.

superyacht middle east

Heading back to the lobby, we forego the stairs and catch the elevator down to the lower deck. While many yachts have rather a simple elevator, the Majesty 140’s can best be described as professional, as it comes complete with a digital readout and a satisfying audible   ‘ding’ announcing our arrival.

There are four staterooms for guests to choose from: two twins (with Pullmans) forward and two double aft. Each cabin benefits from a quality en suite, as well as some serious glazing. Staring out through the windows we notice the proximity of the sea, which according to Mahmoud is only 50cms away. That’s close enough to be able to look any fish right in the eye. Another nice touch are the hidden sockets. These are never pretty, so they’ve been move into the bed’s structure, leaving the USB ports as the only visible sockets.

OWNER’S STATEROOM

Colourful works of art line the main deck lobby walls, with a staircase and elevator located to port and a day head to starboard which courtesy of a large window, boasts an extremely scenic view.

Forward is the Owner’s Stateroom, with the traditional layout of lobby, bedroom and en suite. The lobby features seating and storage with high railings perfectly suited for hanging kandoras and abayas. The soft carpet of the main salon leads you into the bedroom, with its subtle blue tones and light and airy ambience courtesy of the large windows, but it is the Owner’s balcony, which is set at a forward facing angle, that really catches the eye. It’s only a quick hop from the bed, with the two chairs ideal for taking breakfast in the sun, but at a touch of a button, the balcony extends down in one swift movement. Unlike many balconies which have to be set by hand, the 140’s railings lift and retract automatically in less than a second. It’s yet another ingenious system that sets the 140 apart from her European peers.

superyacht middle east

BRIDGE DECK

We’re back in the elevator for the short accent to the bridge deck. Here, as we head forward to the wheelhouse we pass by the server, with its numerous flashing lights and cables, highlighting just how technically advanced the Majesty 140 is – the entire superyacht can be controlled by the touch screens found in every lounge and cabin.

We find the captain at his helm, and before him an array of digital Furno screens and tech alongside a brace of analogue gauges which monitor the big MTUs. Also in front of us is one of the Majesty’s most distinctive styling characteristics, the reverse rake windscreen. Not only is it a strong design element, but the screen’s shape naturally covers the bridge from the sun.

Unlike many European yachts, the Majesty’s wheelhouse is there for everyone to enjoy, with a viewing sofa and table behind the captain’s chair and even a fold down bed to port for guests to take a nap on. It’s a sociable place and a great way to get the kids interested in yachting.

Heading out through the pantograph doors we find two external docking stations to port and starboard with the foredeck lounge housed in front of the reverse rake windshield. Here, a central table is surrounded by a C-shaped sofa, with two L-shaped sofas facing aft. Despite its open and relaxed feel, the foredeck lounge is one of the most secretive areas on board, especially so when docked stern-to, as we are today. Here, there’s nothing surrounding us apart from sun, sea and Umm al-Quwain’s mangroves.

Back through the lobby we pass a day head with a slightly less scenic view as the one below on the main deck and then we’re into the cigar lounge. Here, the bar features real tobacco leaves in its structure and is surrounded by some rather cool stools. The décor here is relaxed, with cream and brown being the dominant colourway.

Stepping through the push-button sliding doors, we arrive at the aircraft carrier-sized upper deck lounge. Even filled with loose poufs, bean bags and various chairs, there’s still more than enough standing space and if you need to sit down, there are sofas and table to port and starboard.

superyacht middle east

As we head up the starboard staircase to the flybridge, Mahmoud points out the extra width of the stairwell, as more often that not, the crew are carrying everything from drinks trays to loose furniture up them. It’s a very fair point, as a lot of yacht stairwells are only slightly wider than shoulder width. While holding that thought we step on to the sun deck.

Standing here on the Majesty 140’s top deck, you’re instantly reminded that this is a 43-metre superyacht with an 8-metre beam. This huge area is split into three zones and ticks all the lifestyle boxes. Aft is for sun worshippers, with loose beds surrounding a spacious Jaquzzi. Here, a waterfall cascades down from an opening in the sun deck roof – a detail we first saw on the flagship Majesty 155. When relaxing in the sun gets a bit much, then its time to head to the central lounge. Here, guests can choose between chilling at the bar, or flopping down in the C-shaped sofa. Ahead is another Majesty feature we first saw in the 155 and that’s the forward lounge. This can be seen as a more formal area favoured by Middle East owners and perfect for entertaining or doing business. One sun deck feature we really like is the twin sunroofs that cover the forward and middle lounges. Whereas most sunroofs are single, these can be opened individually, meaning its possible to dine or do business in the sun, if you so wish.

Gulf Craft is gaining momentum with every new yacht it launches, with the Majesty Yachts range now mixing the best of European style with the charm and grace of the Middle East. Looks wise, with its sportster silhouette, reverse rake windscreen and superstructure ‘arrow’ the 140 is arguably more stylish than most 43-metre yachts coming out of the European shipyards. The 140’s interior is just as innovative, with the ‘one-touch’ drop down balconies in the aft deck lounge and Owner’s stateroom being particular stand-out features. At 17 million dollars, the 140 is also extremely well priced compared to her competitors, something which hasn’t gone unnoticed as two 140s have already been sold off-plan. Often (as you don’t actually need one) a superycht is bought only with the heart: with the Majesty 140, you can safely buy her with your head too.

Inside the Maldives’ first superyacht marina, the newest playground of the super rich

Y ou’d be forgiven for assuming the Maldives, a country that is 99 per cent water and a playground for the uber wealthy, comfortably caters for the yachting elite. The archipelago’s 172 luxury resorts, many of which are built on private islands, offer every conceivable amenity, from sublime underwater spas to incongruous snow rooms. Yet a purpose-built superyacht marina is a glaring omission from the list, an anomaly that Atoll Estates is looking to change.

The UAE-based company has revealed plans for a five-star development set within 500 hectares of a natural lagoon in the South Malé Atoll. Located just 21 miles from Malé International airport (which completes a large expansion in 2025 to cater for the estimated 4.3 million travellers passing through each year), Zamani Islands will comprise three individual resorts spread across eight islands. Designed in partnership with Dubai-based architects Killa Design, it promises to host the island chain’s first dedicated superyacht marina.

“By providing state-of-the-art facilities for superyachts , the marina will attract more high-net-worth individuals and yachting enthusiasts to the region,” says Amit Majumder, co-founder and managing partner of Atoll Estates, who believes the influx will boost local tourism. “The increased yachting traffic will foster the development of related services and infrastructure, further establishing the Maldives as a premier yachting destination on the global stage.”

The initial phase of the development, set to open in 2026, will include the first of three distinct resorts made up of a collection of private residences, each with a private pier for yacht tenders. Lifelong berthing at the marina (once complete) will also be included. The second “multi-experiential” resort is aimed at families and couples with a private island beach club for over 21s, while the third “lifestyle” resort will have a total of 300 keys, a yacht and sailing club and the largest events and entertainment venue in the country.

Spanning a whopping 60,000 square metres, Zamani Islands marina’s full-service facilities are pitched to include crew amenities, provisioning, maintenance and access to a yacht club. Of the 120 yacht berths, 60 will be dedicated to superyachts upwards of 30m in length, with a single dockside mooring of up to 200m. Other resort amenities include the first medical spa in the country (though Soneva’s two wellness complexes may have pipped them to the post), personal butler service, and 28 food and beverage venues, including an underwater restaurant.

It’s no secret that the Maldives’ wide-open waters, vibrant coral reefs and diving hot spots make it a yachting haven. Around 70 to 100 large motor and sailing yachts arrive in Maldivian waters each year (per 2021-2023 Maldivian Coast Guard cruising permit applications). The country’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean also makes it a convenient stopover for yachts travelling between the Middle East, southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. According to tracking data compiled by Bloomberg, the Maldives saw more visiting yachts than Hong Kong and Singapore combined in 2023, slightly outpacing Thailand. So why has there not been a superyacht marina in the pipeline before now?

“For the past 20 years, the Maldives’ private resort tourism model has proven highly profitable and pretty low risk,” says Splinter Fangman, a yacht and berth broker at Edmiston. “With a superyacht marina, it’s still a gamble whether the yachts will actually use it.”

For vessels upwards of 70m that can sustain themselves at anchor for weeks at a time, the Maldives’ current lack of infrastructure isn’t an issue. Yachts like 134m Serene and 97m Faith are self-sufficient floating resorts equipped with their own high-end amenities, even the aforementioned snow room. Provisioning and fuel bunkering is done ship to ship using a large barge that caters for private island resorts. Though the opportunity to dock at a marina to use shore power, turn off systems and generators, and allow the crew to go ashore is appealing, it’s not a requisite, says Fangman, especially for owners who prize privacy above all else.

For smaller yachts that depend on the services of a marina, making the crossing to the Indian Ocean can be challenging. That said, the Maldives is well placed to capture substantial traffic in the burgeoning Asia-Pacific yachts, while vessels based in the Middle East regard it as an attractive alternative to the crowded anchorages of the Caribbean.

“A marina in the Maldives will pull through huge numbers of yachts from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf,” says Donovan Chong, an independent marina entrepreneur. He cites the 146m Lürssen-built Opera, owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, which typically berths in Dubai, as a frequent visitor to the Maldivian archipelago.

Demand for a marina that caters to the super rich is now a strategic focus for the Maldives, adds Chong, who notes there are several additional imminent marina projects in the pipeline. “The Maldivian government has made it a top priority to explore new tourism verticals beyond hotels and resorts and to establish the Maldives as the ‘eastern terminus’ of the yachting world.”

He believes a dedicated marina will unlock the untapped potential of the Maldives as a charter (yacht rental) hot spot, and that future resorts need to be built around the marina, rather than treating it as an amenity. Majumder agrees. “Zamani Islands is more than just a residence; it is a lifestyle — one that seamlessly blends the opulence of land and sea, providing a haven for those who appreciate the finer things in life.” In other words, build it and the yachts will come.

The United Arab Emirates ( UAE ) has been selected as one of the world’s Top 10 superyacht-building nations in the recently released 2014 Global Order Book , a report issued annually by the Boat International Group. The UAE took the 9th place with 18 yachts over 24m presently in build in the country.

UAE Ranking in the top 10 of the Global Order Book (GOB)

Enabling the UAE to sail into this prestigious listing as the manufacturer of 15 of the country’s 18 superyachts currently on order, is UAE-based yacht builder Gulf Craft . Gulf Craft also clinched a top 10 ranking among the world’s superyacht-building shipyards, moving up to the 10th position from its previous ranking of 17th.

Commenting on the achievement Mohammed Hussein Al Shaali Chairman, Gulf Craft said: “Gulf Craft takes the opportunity to congratulate the UAE President, the UAE Vice President and Ruler of Dubai , all the rulers of the UAE and the Emirati people for this achievement. The news coincides with the recent celebration of 42 years of the Union and the recent win of the Dubai Expo 2020 and is yet another endorsement of the UAE’s successful economic standing. The UAE today is a prominent player on the global stage and in recent years has consolidated its position in a number of different key sectors. At Gulf Craft we are honored to be a part of this accomplishment and to contribute to advancing the UAE’s global position among the world’s leading yacht-building nations.”

He added: “Gulf Craft has pursued a clear strategic vision aimed at propelling the company to the forefront among manufacturers of luxury superyachts. Our strategy has been driven by a pursuit of innovation, high quality and high value and our achievements in recent years have garnered global recognition, confirmed by this latest ranking. At Gulf Craft we have invested in the human capital and expertise as well as the facilities and technology to enable us to produce vessels that are globally competitive and adhere to international standards.”

Today Gulf Craft has a wider superyacht product offering than ever before in the company’s history with eight different models available between 24m and 50m. The company has made significant investments in recent years in the development of its facilities and know-how which has grown global appreciation of the high standards of quality and innovation evident in its superyachts. As a builder of made-to-order luxury vessels, it’s the personalized approach and flexibility brought to each individual build that has helped put Gulf Craft and the UAE on the superyacht building map, enabling it to far outperform its peers as well as grow its brand equity in mature international yachting markets such as Europe .

“Gulf Craft has succeeded, thanks to the ambitious vision of the UAE’s leaders, the UAE’s nurturing business environment and the high flexibility offered to entrepreneurs keen on advancing their individual businesses as well as the industry in which they operate. The economic approach adopted by the UAE has played a pivotal role in advancing our efforts and these factors have allowed us to adopt a leading position within the superyacht market, both locally and internationally,” concluded Al Shaali.

According to the 2014 Global Order Book, this is the first time since the record year of 2009 (when 1,008 new orders were recorded), that the number of new build yacht projects globally has been higher than that of the previous year. This year’s Global Order Book reveals that 735 new yachts are under construction or on order, a 6.2 percent increase over the 692 projects in the 2013 Order Book. The publication termed the reversal of a decreasing trend of superyacht orders that lasted four years as “certainly good news” for the industry.

Morning Briefing: Europe Edition

Friday briefing.

Kamala Harris’s interview with CNN.

Natasha Frost

By Natasha Frost

🇺🇸 U.S. ELECTION 2024

The presidential election is less than 70 days away. This is what we’re watching.

Kamala Harris spoke to CNN

In her first interview since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris embraced the economic record of the Biden administration as “good work,” walking a fine line between praising White House investments in domestic manufacturing, clean energy and infrastructure without saying Americans are economically secure. Read our analysis .

Asked what she would do on Day 1 of her presidency, Harris did not lay out any specific plans, speaking generally of promoting an “opportunity economy” that strengthens the middle class but not spelling out executive orders or other immediate actions. She was also pressed on her abandonment of more liberal positions, including banning fracking.

Harris also suggested she would appoint a Republican to her cabinet, a symbolic move that suggests she would seek to govern in a bipartisan manner. She did not indicate who she might have in mind.

Background: Harris has taken few questions from reporters since President Biden ended his campaign. Astead Herndon, a Times political correspondent, explained the challenges of interviewing her to the On Politics newsletter . “She didn’t break eye contact,” he said. “It was intense. You feel on trial.”

Here’s what else to know:

Donald Trump reposted an image on his social media platform that implied that Harris had traded sexual favors to help her political career .

Trump sought to move his Manhattan criminal case into federal court, filing the unusual request three months after he was convicted in state court.

Senate Democrats played a more assertive role than was previously known in bringing about Biden’s withdrawal from the race. Here’s how they did it .

Do you have questions about the election? Send them to us, and we’ll find the answers.

A second day of Israel’s raids on the West Bank

Israel’s military stormed a mosque in the occupied West Bank yesterday and engaged in gun battles that left at least five Palestinians dead, including a young militant commander who Israel says was responsible for attacks against Israeli civilians and whom The Times interviewed in July . The death toll is now at 17.

It was the second straight day of an Israeli incursion into the northern West Bank, focused in and around the cities of Tulkarm and Jenin, involving columns of armored vehicles, fleets of drones and hundreds of troops. The raids are Israel’s biggest military actions in the West Bank in more than a year.

In other news: Israel will temporarily pause military operations across Gaza in a staggered three-day schedule beginning Sunday to allow health workers to give polio vaccinations to about 640,000 children under the age of 10, U.N. officials said. A W.H.O. representative said that it was “critical” that 90 percent of Gaza’s children be immunized “to stop the outbreak.”

Congo is struggling to confront mpox

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the epicenter of the mpox outbreak, said they lack even the most basic tools necessary to contain the virus . The country is struggling to diagnose cases and is still waiting for vaccines, which are trapped in a byzantine drug regulatory process at the W.H.O.

The virus has killed nearly 600 people in Africa and left many more with painful lesions that make it difficult to walk, eat or even breathe.

ARTS AND IDEAS

Asian men are scoring stronger, sexier roles onscreen.

Western pop culture has historically limited Asian American men to stereotypical, even emasculating roles. But writers, directors and actors like Manny Jacinto, above, have pushed for more nuanced representation, resulting in a wave of Asian hunks and heroes who get the girl (or the guy) and save the day. Read more here .

My colleague Matt Stevens, who wrote the article linked above, talked to Times Insider about how it came together.

“I spoke to almost two dozen Asian Americans: mostly actors, writers and directors, but also scholars, historians and everyday people,” he said. “I needed to understand how laws and immigration policy — and especially pop culture — had shaped America’s view of Asian men. And I was interested in how the years of unflattering Hollywood portrayals made Asian and Asian American men feel.”
