SYDNEY (AP) — Sydney Harbour is set to host SailGP racing for the next three years, including the ninth event of the international series’ third season in February 2023.
SailGP said Friday that the Australian Sail Grand Prix would be held from Feb. 18-19. An estimated 20,000 people turned out to watch Tom Slingsby’s Australia SailGP team win its home event in December 2021.
Slingsby, the team’s driver and chief executive, said it was good to get the race locked in for the next three years “on the most beautiful harbor in the world.”
“We’ve been sort of living on a year-by-year, fingers-crossed basis,” Slingsby said. “So to secure our future in Sydney is unbelievable for us. We should have great wind, great weather that time of year and it’d been great to win on home soil again.”
There are 10 teams competing in Season 3, including new franchises Canada and Switzerland and returning teams Australia, Denmark, France, Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United States.
In the opening race of the season in Bermuda in May, Slingsby hit the starting line in the podium race in control and sailed ahead of Britain’s Ben Ainslie and Canada’s Phil Robertson for an easy win, reaching 42 mph (68 kph) as his 50-foot catamaran.
The victory came just six weeks after the Aussies’ dominating win in the $1 million, winner-take-all grand final of the pandemic-delayed Season 2 on San Francisco Bay. Team Australia also won the $1 million top prize in 2019, the inaugural season of tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s global league.
Slingsby, an Olympic gold medalist and former America’s Cup champion, has won four straight SailGP regattas and six of the last seven.
The next race in the SailGP series is this weekend in Chicago.
Remaining 2022-23 schedule after Chicago:
July 30-31: Plymouth, England
Aug. 19-20: Copenhagen, Denmark
Sept. 10-11: Saint-Tropez, France
Sept. 24-25: Cádiz, Spain
Nov. 12-13: Dubai
Jan. 14-15: Singapore
Feb. 18-19: Sydney
March 18-19: Christchurch, New Zealand
May 6-7: San Francisco (and season 3 grand final)

SailGP set to make waves in San Francisco with millions at stake
By virgil aspen • published july 12, 2024 • updated on july 13, 2024 at 2:11 pm.
SailGP, an international sailboat racing circuit, backed by Oracle founder Larry Ellison and well-respected sailor Russell Coutts, is set to host its final, championship races in the San Francisco Bay this weekend, with the grand prize for the winning team amounting to $2 million.
The competition, whose founder Ellison was once quoted professing his love for the "idyllic independence" of sailing and has been touted as Formula One on the waves by Coutts, was founded in 2018 with the hopes of taking competitive sailing beyond cloistered country clubs and propel it into the mainstream.

"What we're seeing is [that] this isn't the avid sailing fan that's following SailGP, maybe 10% of our audience is that. It's really the racing fan, the general sports fan, and it's also the people that are interested in the backstory of our athletes," said Coutts in a Friday interview with CNBC , adding later that he doesn't feel it would be unreasonable for teams to be selling for $80 million price tags sometime in the next year.

This tidal wave of success can be attributed to a number of factors, but by far, the sport's most profound sea change has been the advent of F50 catamarans, sailboats capable of navigating the waves at highway speeds, velocities long thought impossible by sailors in years past.
"[Our sailboats are] above the water, not in the water, and our goal is to stay flying as long as possible," said Peter Kinney, a California native and sailor for the United States' SailGP team.
SailGP's rising current of broad appeal can be attributed to other factors as well, namely its inclusivity to women and its commitment to sustainability . On its website, it says that the organization is "...racing for a better future and believe sport has the power to change the world."
San Francisco as a location was a perfect fit for a climactic race in the eyes of the organizers.
"San Francisco is really the best racetrack. The breeze is consistent, and the sailors love it," said Alex Reid, SailGP's director of performance engineering. Others, such as Team USA strategist Mike Buckley, describe the Bay as "one of the most beautiful places in the world to sail."

These favorable conditions, combined with such a large prize being on the line, leaves confidence high that each team involved will be in close competition all the way through, as sailors try their hardest to be the first to surge across the finish line.
"We're expecting the race to be tight, exciting, racing on the edge," Buckley said.

SailGP: Five things to watch in San Francisco
Published on July 11th, 2024 by Editor -->
The 13-event schedule for SailGP Season 4 concludes July 13-14 in San Francisco, USA. It will be the final racing for the 10-boat fleet, with the top three teams in the season standing advancing to one last race in which the winner claims the overall season title and the $2 million USD prize. Here are five things to watch for when racing gets underway:
Spain vs France in fleet racing It’s a congested top half of the leaderboard, with just five points separating Spain in third place and France in fourth. This means there’s everything to play for when fleet racing begins, with France gunning to beat Spain and steal their spot in the Grand Final. Can Spain hold the French off? Or will Quentin Delapierre’s squad swoop in and claim fleet racing victory?
Will New Zealand convert stellar season into Championship title? It’s been an incredible season for Peter Burling’s New Zealand, which is the only team so far qualified for the winner-takes-all, $2 million Grand Final. But the Kiwis came so close to winning the Season 3 title, losing out to fierce rivals Australia in the final seconds of the race. Will they choke again, or can they hold on to claim the ultimate victory?
Can the Australians battle back to claim a 4th Championship title Triple champions Australia meanwhile have had an uncharacteristically lukewarm season, with only one event win despite being in eight Finals. But driver Tom Slingsby has reemphasized that the Aussies have ‘never been beaten in San Francisco’. Will this remain true in Season 4’s showdown?
Will other teams play spoiler? According to the points, it’s mathematically probable that two teams out of Australia, France, and Spain will join New Zealand in the Grand Final showdown. But points are tight – with Canada and Emirates GBR just four behind France. Could stellar performances from these teams, combined with poor performances from others, completely reshuffle the leaderboard when racing gets underway?
Who will come at the bottom of the fleet? It’s been another tough season for Switzerland, and a steep learning curve for Germany in their debut season. With just two points separating Switzerland in 10th and Germany in 9th, there’s all to play for to avoid being the team at the bottom of the fleet.
SailGP’s Season 4 Grand Final in San Francisco takes place July 13-14, with racing from 2.30 pm PDT.

Sail GP back in Chicago this weekend
The event takes place Friday and Saturday, and spectators can watch from Navy Pier
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Slick sailboats are back in Lake Michigan as some of the world's most talented sailors arrive in Chicago,
The Sail GP competition happens this Friday and Saturday and the adrenaline-fueled races will bring crowds to the lakefront.
Chicago is transforming into a racing town this summer.
Sail GP has returned and is gearing up for two days of spectator-focused racing that will take place on Lake Michigan right in front of the city's skyline this weekend.
"Chicago is a sports town and we are seeing racing starting take off around the country and they are realizing we want to be in Chicago," Tod Reynolds, Sail GP race director, said. "Sail GP learned that first event was here last year, NASCAR is learning that again this year. That skyline, it's all the same reasons, the people of the city, the skyline. Why would you not want to be in Chicago?"
Wednesday morning, three gigantic F-50 catamarans were launched at Burnham Harbor by a crane. The cutting-edge boats boast highway speeds.
Athlete Paul Campbell-James is a UK-born wing trimmer for Team USA, driven by the adrenaline.
"It's really hard to describe and you describe it to sailors and sailors mostly think of the boats going 10 miles an hour like would be a fast boat," Campbell-James said. "We're doing 60 miles an hour and we're doing that meters away from nine other boats."
Chicago is the first stop of the fourth season of Sail GP, with 10 teams here from all over the world. This is the only freshwater stop.
"The boat, it flies out of the water and when you have freshwater compared to saltwater, the boat will fly out of the water at a higher speed then with the saltwater so it changes a lot of our numbers, a lot of our takeoff speeds and changes the way we sail," Campbell-James said.
Wednesday, teams are getting into the water and training.
"I've always been an adrenaline junkie. I love going fast on the water. There is nothing like it," said Team USA's Mac Agnese.
Launched in 2019, Sail GP is all about short track racing close to shore, creating a completely different experience for spectators.
"The beauty of these harbors and venues around the world are natural stadiums, and when we ride, literally this close to the boardwalk, what that means is you have these huge crowds," said Team USA's Jimmy Spithill. "It's a tight little track, and Chicago really sets up beautifully. Right off Navy Pier. We're on the inside of the break wall. Yeah, people. It will be impossible to miss."
Three 12 to 15-minute races will take place on each of the two days they are in Chicago.
"It happens very quickly. A small mistake can make a big difference. The boats are super quick. Things are happening very fast, makes it very exciting," Agnese said.
The event takes place Friday and Saturday and spectators can watch from Navy Pier.
It comes as the city also revs up for the NASCAR Street Race at the beginning of July.
Sail GP said all speed-seekers are welcome.
"So this is unlike any sailboat race that happens in Chicago," Reynolds said. "It's more like Formula One or NASCAR on the water."
The races on Friday and Saturday will start at 4 p.m. and there will be 90 minutes of races with three races each day. Gates will open at Navy Pier at 3 p.m.
While the best views for spectators will be from Navy Pier, where you will need a ticket, anyone along the lakefront between Museum Campus and Navy Pier should be able to catch a glimpse of the action.

Powerboat P1 Announces TV, Livestream Broadcasts
Powerboat P1 will film its upcoming races in Cocoa Beach, Sarasota and Clearwater events—part of the APBA Offshore Championships—for one-hour broadcasts to be aired in the USA nationally on CBS Sports Network, followed by airing on Fox Sports Florida/Sun, as well as additional Fox Sports Regional Networks.
The races will also be streamed on P1’s Facebook page . The Sunday races will be streamed live, race by race.
Mike Yowaiski is slated to be furnishing commentary for the races; Martin Sanborn will most likely be broadcasting with him.
All P1 SuperStock Championship events will also be filmed and broadcast on Fox Sports Florida/internationally as per usual. The P1 SuperStock class will race with the bracket classes within the Florida APBA Offshore Championship events, but will be filmed to have their own television show.
In other offshore racing news, Sunoco Racing Fuels has entered into a partnership with Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) and Powerboat P1 as the official fuel provider for this year’s APBA Offshore Championship race series.
“Sunoco has a long history of supporting Offshore Racing dating back to the early days, and we are excited to be a part of this race series,” says Southern Racing Fuels President Rick Williams . “Sunoco has provided many National and World Champion race teams with performance fuels, and we appreciate their support over the years.”
With an anticipated increase in registered race teams participating in the upcoming season, Sunoco performance fuels will be available at each race venue offering professional and consistent on-site service. Both Powerboat P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala and OPA President Ed Smith have agreed that forming corporate partnerships and series sponsors like Sunoco are critical as they focus on growing this new race series.
