58' Sonship Built by West Bay

The 58' Sonship built by West Bay  in British Columbia is their most popular model, it offers a blend of classic styling with a modern pilot house, luxurious accommodations, and world class construction. Built on a modified–V hull for speed, it features Airex coring for strength, prop pockets for a shallow draft, and under water exhaust for quiet and reduced fumes.

Exteriors include a good-sized cockpit with lazarette storage, walk-around side decks, and a spacious flybridge with 2 L-lounges with 2 cocktail tables.

The yacht's exceptionally roomy open-plan interior afforded by its 17' beam offers three staterooms that sleep 6 and two heads. An amidships full-beam master stateroom with walk-around queen berth, a luxurious salon furnished with large U-shaped sofa and hidden entertainment center, an extended pilothouse with full-service galley and dinette, and a standup engine room with cockpit access are its highlights. The 58 West Bay Sonship is a three stateroom, raised pilothouse motor yacht with cockpit, walk-around side decks and flybridge, and offers one of the finest interior arrangements of any similar type yacht. The interior woodwork is crafted in satin varnished American Cherry with high gloss corner posts. Teak & Holly flooring graces the galley/pilothouse area and heads while the remaining floors are covered in carpet with a sound deadening underlayment. All fabrics, wall coverings, carpets, bedspreads, and pillow shams as well as other linens and decor items have been upgraded from standard to superior quality. Closets and hanging lockers are lined with aromatic cedar. Windows on the main deck are of gray tinted, heat-treated laminated glass. All living spaces offer opening ports, overhead hatches, or sliding windows for natural ventilation. Four, zone-direct expansion air conditioning and heating systems provide supreme indoor comfort.

The white hull is vacuum bonded, hand laid up fiberglass Knytex and BTI with a 1" core cell, urethane foam core fiberglass stringers, and ISO Aristech resin osmosis protection below the waterline. The deck is cored, as are all bulkheads. Barium filled foam composite laminate in the engine room bulkheads and overhead provide sound insulation. Bilges and machinery spaces are finished with epoxy paint for ease of maintenance. The boot stripe is 2" black Imron and bottom is finished with Interlux 2000/2001 epoxy barrier and Micron CSC extra anti fouling paint.

The hull is protected with a rub rail capped with a stainless-steel striker. All handrails and rail fittings are 1-1/4'" 316 stainless. There are twelve cleats: 4 bow, 2 stern, 4 springline and 2 flush popups on the swim platform. An anchor platform with bow roller is fitted on the foredeck. Propeller shafts and hydrodynamic rudders are stainless steel.

This may be the wrong place for this question, but I figure there are alot of experienced boat owners, captains and people connected to the industry on this forum. I have a slip neighbor who has seen and really likes a Westbay 58. I went and looked at it with him and came away quite impressed with the quality of the workmanship. It was a 2000 and had the 3408 Cat engine package. For a pilothouse boat I thought it was every bit as good quality wise as an Offshore 58. Anyway, has anyone spent any dockside and/or sea time aboard one of these boats. I told him I would run this thread here and see if he can get any additional info. Thanks, I know they're not Hatts and he would prefer a newer pilothouse boat.

These are built about 10 miles from where I live, I know the shop foreman who supervised all the painting work on all their yachts, they are known for high quality construction and your friend should feel confident in the Yachts overall quality of construction. I have seen a few cruise from Vancouver Bc to Mexico and return with no running problems other than weather stuff. Good luck. DM

Spent some time on one of these which was a dock mate in Marathon this winter (owned by Jack Dozier who publishes the Waterway Guides). Very nice boat, Hatt quality. His unfortunately had overly pumped up 6v92's which were causing him some heart ache. Beyond that, I really liked that boat. I am a big fan of the Offshores too, and this boat had better ergonomics, especially in the ER. The company has had some big financial problems in the last year or so due to the exchange rate and a less than competent son taking over the business. George

Thnaks you guys... great feedback. I will see him tomorrow and pass on the info. I agree on the engine room. It was standing headroom and a much better accessthan the Offshore 58. I went aboard an Offshore at the Newport boat show here in April and the entrance to the engine room was through a hatch in the aft deck and it was "stoop" room for me. He is aware of the financial problems with Westbay. He had heard the same reasons. The loss of the US dollar against the Canadian dollar and very poor management by the two sons of the original owner. Once again, thanks and I too thought it was a very good quality boat.

The 31.39m/103' motor yacht 'Odyssey' (ex. Little Paradise) was built by West Bay SonShip in Canada at their Delta, British Columbia shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Glade Johnson Design and she was completed in 1999. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Jack Sarin and she was last refitted in 2019.

Odyssey has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 suites comprising one VIP cabin. She is also capable of carrying up to 4 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Her features include a gym, deck jacuzzi, WiFi and air conditioning.

Range & Performance

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, with teak decks, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin diesel MTU (12V2000) 12-cylinder 1,350hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots with a range of up to 2,100 nautical miles from her 17,033 litre fuel tanks at 12 knots. Her low draft of 1.63m/5'4" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines. An on board stabilization system ensures comfort when underway. Her water tanks store around 2,839 Litres of fresh water.

The vessel database has been updated and is now holding 93,618 vessel histories (with 15,919 images and 13,842 records of ship wrecks and marine disasters). The mariner and naval biography database has also been updated and now contains 58,620 entries (with 4,020 images).

In 2023 the Nauticapedia celebrated the 50th Anniversary of it’s original inception in 1973 (initially it was on 3" x 5" file cards). It has developed, expanded, digitized and enlarged in those ensuing years to what it is now online. If it was printed out it would fill more than 300,000 pages!

My special thanks to our volunteer IT adviser, John Eyre, who (since 2021) has modernized, simplified and improved the update process for the databases into semi–automated processes. His participation has been vital to keeping the Nauticapedia available to our netizens.

Also my special thanks to my volunteer content accuracy checker, John Spivey of Irvine CA USA, who has proofread thousands of Nauticapedia vessel histories and provided input to improve more than 11,000 entries. His attention to detail has been a huge unexpected bonus in improving and updating the vessel detail content.

In addition to producing the luxury SonShip motor yachts West Bay is known for, West Bay Shipyards provides yacht repairs, yacht servicing and refitting, and any services needed to make a vessel ready for ocean passage. As one of Canada’s largest boat builders, West Bay Marine has a 110ft tri-deck SonShip under construction designed by Greg Marshall, the award-winning Canadian naval architect based in British Columbia. The 2020 SonShip 110 features elegant softer lines with graceful curves; window corners are rounded with softer angles, a departure from West Bay’s characteristic straighter lines and angular windows. Three steps down from the Pilothouse or three steps up from the cockpit, the salon provides a relaxing open, and airy space with great visibility all around. To port is a very large U-shaped sofa (recovered by C2 Shore) with an adjustable-height coffee table.

Forward to starboard is a custom cabinet for wine bottles and glasses. Continuing along the starboard side, custom cabinetry encloses the motorized retractable 42” television screen. A large upholstered swivel club chair lends extra seating.

All furniture tops are finished in Madrone Burl. Wood blinds cover the windows. The double aft doors are equipped with rollaway screens, and open to the cockpit

A spacious outboard-facing U-shaped Galley, with a large window over the sink is located in the aft port corner of the Pilothouse. It is efficient in design, layout, and storage space. All countertops are finished in granite with splash rail, the floor is teak and holly style, and the refrigerator is paneled to match the cabinetry. The sink is a double stainless basin with single lever Grohe faucet. Four burner Miele electric stove top is covered by a custom-routed Boos cutting board for extra counter space. Opposite the galley, an upholstered dinette will comfortably seat four. with granite-topped pedestal table and full storage beneath. Aft of the dinette is a curved staircase to the Flybridge.

Located amidships to take advantage of the full beam of the boat. A centerline queen-size bed with dual control Sleep Number Mattress (new 2020) and upgraded bedspread and pillow shams. Nightstands on either side with swing arm reading lights on the headboard. Concealed overhead rope lighting adds ambiance.

Cherry-finished cabinets and hanging closets provide ample storage for clothing and personal items. A small Honeywell safe is located in the larger closet. To starboard is a large dresser with drawers and doors, a cabinet, and large hanging locker. Forward to port is a larger lighted step-in closet A separate closet houses a Whirlpool stacked washer and dryer.

The ensuite Master Head runs fore and aft along the port side. The vanity top is marble with under-mounted oval sink.

Aft is a stall shower with glass door and single lever adjustable height Moen showerhead. Forward is the VacuFlush freshwater toilet. The medicine cabinet is finished with beveled mirror doors, the headliner is a fitted mirror, and the ventilating fan has an automatic timer.

Centerline queen-size berth with 7" innerspring mattress, upgraded bedspread and pillow shams, and large storage beneath.

The stateroom features a lighted cedar-lined hanging locker with shelf storage to starboard, 2 Lewmar overhead hatches with Ocean screens/shades, a dresser, and, built-in shelves outboard and mirrored forward bulkhead. Concealed overhead rope lighting adds ambiance. An HP combo printer linked to wireless network provides the flexibility to conduct work when needed.

Upper and lower berths, outboard, fitted with 7" innerspring mattresses and upgraded bedspreads and pillow shams. There is a lighted hanging locker (which contains shelves that could be removed) and a mirrored full-height storage locker forward with shelves. Concealed overhead rope lighting adds ambiance.

Located opposite the Port Guest Stateroom with marble-topped vanity, beveled mirrored medicine cabinet, VacuFlush freshwater toilet, automatic ventilating fan on a timer, fitted mirror headliner, and storage cupboard below the vanity. The separate shower stall offers a bench seat, single lever Moen showerhead, and glass door.

At the same level as the Galley and Dinette is the Pilothouse centered around a curved console with navigation and full engine instrumentation and engine controls with an adjustable Stidd helmsman chair. To port is a chart/work area with chart drawers and storage beneath.

Windows are kept clear, when needed; by three multi-speed marine grade windshield wipers with washers and an air defrost system. She has both port and starboard access through flush-fit aircraft-type sliding doors with rollaway screens.

Westbay has developed a high-quality AC/DC ship electrical system that begins with a custom load-switching AC circuit breaker panel for balancing generator and shore power to obtain maximum efficiency. It is further supported by a Yacht-O-Matic automatic electrical source switching system to provide hands-off control for generators and shore power loads. The cockpit may be entered from the swim platform, or from the salon via double doors. It is laid with 5/8” teak, new in 2019. Concurrently, the swim platform teak surface was removed and replaced with a non-skid surface.

Cockpit highlights include varnished teak cap rails, five storage lockers port, and starboard, a swing-out control station with engine and bow thruster controls on port side for docking, sink and faucet, Miele electric barbecue grill, handheld hot/cold shower, and multi-color select courtesy lights. Waterproof speakers and overhead floodlights on the flybridge provide sound and light. Steps to the salon swing up to give access to the stand-up engine room. The Lazarette is beneath the centerline hatch and has abundant storage with custom shelving for spare parts, battery banks, water maker, and other systems.

White hull is vacuum bonded hand laid up fiberglass Knytex and BTI with 1" core cell, urethane foam core fiberglass stringers, and ISO Aristech resin osmosis protection below the waterline. The deck is cored, as are all bulkheads.

Barium-filled foam composite laminate in engine room bulkheads and overhead for sound insulation. Bilges and machinery spaces are finished out in epoxy paint for ease of maintenance. Boot stripe is 2" black Imron and bottom is finished with Interlux 2000/2001 epoxy barrier and Micron CSC extra anti-fouling paint.

The hull is protected with a rub rail capped with a stainless-steel striker. All handrails and rail fittings are 1 1/4'" 316 stainless. 12 cleats - 4 bow, 2 stern, 4 spring line, and 2 flush popups on swim platform. An anchor platform with bow roller is fitted on the foredeck. Propeller shafts and hydrodynamic rudders are stainless steel.

Cockpit floor is laid teak sole and varnished teak cap rail on bulwarks. A port side door opens to the swim platform with 5 removable N stainless handrails/staples.

There was one at Roscioli's that had a major interior problem, they tented the whole boat off and did some secret renovations, that I heard were done under warranty, it could be the same problem. Yours looks like a slow water leak that leaked enough to wet the area, but not enough to leak thru. Good luck with your warranty, the company was bankrupt a short time ago.
