Symbol was founded in Taiwan in 1982. The brand enjoyed considerable popularity in the U.S. market from the mid to late 1980s well into recent years. According the the Symbol website, Symbol was the first Taiwan boat manufacturer to build planing hulls. (In other words, until 1982 all Taiwan boat builders were making either sailboats or trawlers.)

In 1998, Symbol entered a new era when noted American powerboat and superyacht designer Jack Sarin, naval architect, signed on with Symbol as exclusive designer. Prior to opening his own full-service marine design firm is 1980, Jack Sarin was the principle of commercial and merchant ship projects working with famed Edwin Monk, Sr. Jack Sarin’s work, ranging from luxury motor yachts to fishing vessels, patrol boats, fire/rescue, and other commercial or industrial boats in the Pacific Northwest helped establish the region as one of the world’s yacht design and construction centers. Sarin’s portfolio includes the first GRP (glass reinforced plastic) mega-yacht, 98ft “Golden Delicious” launched in 1988. Jack Sarin is renowned for designing and engineering superior, seaworthy hulls with loads of volume and aesthetically pleasing timeless lines. The Symbol ride (particularly of the 2005 70ft 68 Pilothouse) is characterized as flat, quiet, comfortable in all sorts of coastal wave conditions, as well as being easy to handle and maneuver.

Jack Sarin’s 2010 Symbol 55 Classic received high marks for its spacious volume and luxurious appointments such as the L-shaped leather lounge seating 10, a home-sized wine chiller, chest freezer, Bose surround-sound system, plentiful storage cabinetry, large galley with top brand appliances, and featured a Euro transom with dual access from the oversize swim platform to the enlarged cockpit. Designed for long passages as a comfortable offshore home away from home, with deeper keel, semi-displacement hull, and long water lines to provide the smooth, soft, and quiet ride that Symbol is known for. Access to the generous flybridge is from a teak ladder in the pilothouse or a ladder from the cockpit.

The flybridge features a fully equipped helm station and lounge seating for 9-10. The BBQ cabinet houses a refrigerator/freezer and icemaker for an ideal entertainment area. Aft of the BBQ is an area large enough to store a 13ft dinghy and hydraulic crane.

Three key features of Symbol Yachts hull make the boats sea kindly, stable, and very comfortable, that also greatly contribute to the vessel’s ease of handling. Displacement hull is the main feature. Heavy displacement boats do not get tossed around with breaking waves or confused seas making a much more comfortable and safer voyage. Another key feature is the long keel that helps the boat track, but more importantly, it gives the boat greater stability and sea-kindliness by adding displacement and bottom weight. The keel also protects the props and drive shaft in the event of accidental grounding. Thirdly, the vessel’s waterline length as a greater proportion of the overall hull length is ideal for a passage style boat for a more sea-kindly vessel, unlike planing hull powerboats, such as sportfishing yachts where wetted surface is designed to a minimum to attain performance speeds.

Symbol Yacht’s success in the yachting industry stems from its mission to ensure customer needs are met or exceeded, through innovative solutions developed in-house, and by extensively checking each yacht to meet international standards in the yacht industry, such as ISO 9001 and ABS requirements, in addition to Symbol’s standard of excellence.

All models were built to ensure quality and performance—including the Classic, Sundeck, Pilothouse, Trawler and Motoryacht series. Many of the Symbol models available in the preowned market today have unique features as semi-custom boats specified by the original owner or as refit, upgraded older models. Currently only nine Symbol Yachts are available in the US yacht brokerage market and they range from a 1986 Symbol Sun Deck 41ft trawler at under $50,000 to a Jack Sarin designed 2005 70ft Symbol 68 Pilothouse listed at about $1.1

Symbol 42 Motoryacht: A Sea of Relief

  • By Eric Colby
  • Updated: April 1, 2001

You’re on the annual trek from New England to Florida for the winter when you feel a bump against the boat’s bottom. What do you do? If the boat is a Symbol 42 Motor-yacht, you’ll probably just smile and keep going. The prop and rudder are both protected by a shield that extends aft off the keel. This extension also provides a strong pivot point for the bottom of the rudder shaft.

More good news: The 42 Motoryacht has a semi-displacement hull, so the boat is faster than pure trawlers. With a single 420-bhp Cat 3126 diesel, it hit a top speed of 15.7 mph. The best rpm setting is 2400, at which the boat ran 12.8 mph with a range of 411 miles. Extra efficiency is gained from the use of lightweight foam coring in the hullsides, deck, and flying bridge. The 42 Motoryacht is built for extended living aboard. There’s lots of stowage, including a mammoth in-sole locker adjacent to the galley. The microwave/convection oven saves galley space. Besides, no one bakes on a boat. At 8’4″ wide, the aft stateroom is larger than some Manhattan studio apartments and it sports a berth wider than a typical queen. Fore and aft heads are all molded with standup showers and electric toilets, but where the outlet hoses for the heads pass through the sole, the sealant was poorly applied.

For skippers, the upper and lower helms have all the requisite gauges, and there’s extra space for aftermarket electronic navigation equipment. The salon provides room to stretch out on cushy lounges and a TV/VCR is included. Also, the wetbar can stock up to 12 bottles.

Critical for extended living is ease of maintenance. Hinged aft salon steps raise and lock in place with a barrel bolt to provide entry to the engine room. (I’d like to see a gas-strut support added.) The engine room has 4′ of headroom, and the single motor looks lonely, installed on steel mounts bolted into plywood-cored stringers. The batteries are in boxes to starboard, and all the hoses are color coded. Plus, the fiberglass fuel tanks resist corrosion.

What about competition? The Atkinson Cape Island 43 Trawler is wider at 15’4″. It’s built in Nova Scotia for year-round use in harsh northern climates. Each boat is custom built. Base retail price for the 43 Trawler is about $350,000 with a 420-bhp CAT.

Symbol 60 Yachtfish

  • By Chris Caswell
  • Updated: May 11, 2010

symbol yachts

There is a growing niche market for luxury pickup trucks, like the Cadillac Escalade EXT or the Lincoln Mark LT, which seems hard to comprehend at first. We all know that you’re never going to pile a bunch of tree cuttings in that oh-soexpensive pickup bed, and you’re certainly not going to have those roughnecks at the local lumberyard shovel a few cubic yards of gravel onto that highly polished paint. And there’s no way a bunch of construction workers in filthy work boots will get to sprawl across the soft leather seats.

No, those tasks are better suited to a bare-bones Ford F-150 with vinyl seats and paint that is already dinged and chipped.

So why do people want these luxury pickups? Because (and, please, don’t try to interpret this as sexist) she wants to sit up front in luxury, and he wants a place to easily carry that antique rocking chair they found at a garage sale.

And that’s exactly the reason for the Symbol 60 Yachtfish.

The forward area of the 60 is all luxurious yacht. The back porch is rough-and-tumble sportfishing turf. And, like those uber-luxe pickups, it’s a combination that will work perfectly for many people.

Symbol has built a line of yachtfishers for several years, but considerably larger and (from a sportfishing viewpoint) less nimble. The 60 Yachtfish was conceived by the team of Captain Chris Hall and Jason Nasiatka of Symbol Yachts of Florida who, like the designers at General Motors and Lincoln Mercury, saw a need. Says Hall, a dyed-in-the-wool sportfishing guy whose last personal yacht was a Bertram 46, “We wanted to create a yacht that was versatile enough to carry four guys on a long weekend of fishing just as easily as it could take the whole family on a vacation cruise.” So the Symbol 60 Yachtfish is destined to serve two masters.

How does it fare? Magnificently on all counts. It isn’t as fast as many 60-foot convertibles, but it’s going to get you offshore very comfortably and without pounding your fillings loose, too. On the other hand, the gourmet chef of the family is going to find the galley fit for Cordon Bleu cuisine. And when it comes to tucking in for the night, that master stateroom has all the comforts of a four-star suite. Also, pardon me for being crass up front, but this is a whole lot of yacht considering a base price of about $1.3 million.

Since 1998, Jack Sarin has been the exclusive designer for Symbol Yachts, and he worked closely with Hall and Nasiatka on the 60 Yachtfish.

The starting point for the 60YF was the well-proven Symbol 55 Classic hull, which was stretched by the addition of the fishing cockpit. Besides creating a cockpit to rival many sportfishing battlewagons, it created an immense lazarette for storing all the junk that we add to our boats, and it also gives the yacht a leaner, more purposeful look.

The cockpit is going to please the serious fisherman, because the coamings have been widened and padded for comfort, and a 32-gallon livewell is in the transom, complete with lights and macerator pump. There is a solidly hinged transom door, and dual fishboxes in the cockpit sole. A console against the cabin has a fully equipped tackle station with sink. On our test boat, the cockpit had an aggressive nonslip surface but, having seen a teak cockpit on another Symbol, I think I’d opt for the teak underfoot.

The fishing side of the Yachtfish doesn’t end with just the cockpit, because serious fishermen want, as they say, a lot of sticks in their quiver, so there has to be stowage for rods. And stowage there is in spades. The sofa in the saloon has dedicated rod racks underneath, as does the settee in the pilothouse, and there is also vertical rod space under the inside stairs to the bridge.

symbol yachts

For the 60, Hall and Nasiatka specified the galley on the saloon level, although it could also be raised to become part of the pilothouse. I like this arrangement, however, because it creates a pleasant flow to the saloon. There is a breakfast counter on the after side, and the full-sized Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer/ice maker is against the forward bulkhead. Corian counters wrap around on three sides, inset with a three-burner cooktop and a double stainless steel sink under the large window.

The saloon is straightforward, with a settee to port, a pop-up TV to starboard, and space for a couple of loose chairs. The standard teak interior was upgraded on this yacht to a warm cherry, giving it a bright and airy ambiance.

The pilothouse level is, like the rest of the yacht, an interesting blend of seaworthiness and luxury. The skipper has a Pompanette helm chair on centerline, facing a raised instrument panel with a full array of electronics. Our test boat had Side-Power bow and stern thrusters (bow is standard).

With a fore-and-aft settee next to the helm and an L-shaped settee to port, there’s plenty of seating for everyone. Diamond SeaGlaze watertight sliding doors give easy access to the side decks for short-handing.

Stairs from the pilothouse lead down to a foyer with a hidden washer/dryer, and the master stateroom spans the full beam aft with a centerline queen-size berth. A wraparound bureau with builtin vanity solves the stowage problems with a combination of drawers and lockers, while two hanging lockers add flexibility. The en suite head is to starboard, with a comfortably large shower and Raritan electric head.

The forward cabin features an unusual layout with a V-berth below a pair of upper berths. Some might prefer the standard double berth, but this layout provides more sleeping space for fishermen or kids, and a filler cushion can turn it into a large berth for a couple. There is a private head with shower, opposite the third cabin with two bunks.

symbol yachts

Stairs from the pilothouse lead through another watertight door to the flying bridge, where I liked the choice of the two Pompanette helm chairs because they have traditional ladder-back styling. These are both comfortable and a pleasant change from the usual “dental” chairs.

What I found most interesting, however, was the custom laced soft-top over a beautifully executed steel frame. Like the chairs, there’s something retro about the look, and it works beautifully. The skipper gets a full set of navigation and communication electronics that match the lower helm.

Ergonomically, the L-shaped settee is very comfortable with good back support, and a console aft holds a sink and barbecue grill. The boat deck easily accommodates a 12-foot Caribe tender, launched by a UMT davit with a 1,000-pound capacity.

Something I particularly liked (and which you don’t find on sportfishers) were the comfortably wide side decks with high bulwarks for security all the way from the cockpit to the Portuguese bridge. The foredeck is rimmed by double stainless steel rails, twin rode lockers flank the Muir horizontal windlass with both wildcat and warping head, and the massive bow plank has staggered rollers for dual anchoring systems.

Our test boat had an upgraded pair of 715-horsepower Cummins QSM-11 diesels, with the electrical supply from a Northern Lights 16 kW genset. The first thing that struck me in the engineroom was the massive stainless steel engine beds atop the longitudinal stringers. Headroom is stooping, but access is good to the normal service points, although the outside of the engines is restricted by the fiberglass saddle tanks. The fuel manifold system is straightforward, and sight gauges give an accurate reading.

For our sea trial, we had perfectly bad conditions: perfect for a test, bad for general boating. Seas were running 4 to 6 feet in the Gulf Stream, wind was 20 knots plus from the south, and the inlet waters resembled a washing machine froth. But the Symbol 60 Yachtfish was unfazed by everything we threw at her. Without the stabilizers, she was comfortable and, in a beam sea with the Wesmars flippering, she was rock solid. There is a long keel that makes her track straight down seas, and I thought you could set the throttles for 10 knots and go forever (if your forever is about 400 nautical miles away). We topped out at 19.5 knots but, at 10.5 knots and 1500 rpm, we were burning just 15.8 gallons per hour, giving her a comfortable 400-nautical-mile range with better than 10-percent reserves. Certainly not an expedition yacht, but not bad for a comfortable family motoryacht with sportfishing tendencies.

For construction, Symbol uses closedcell coring above the waterline and solid fiberglass below, and there are three layers of vinylester resin below the waterline for blister protection.

Here’s the bottom line: I liked the Symbol 60 Yachtfish a lot. Like those luxe pickups, she does a lot of things well, and she does them at a price fit for this economy. Take a closer look.

Before that, she was the California attorney general and the district attorney in San Francisco. Here are some things you might not know about the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.

1. Her name translates to “lotus flower” in Sanskrit . It’s a near-mythical symbol in Indian culture, representing beauty, prosperity and fertility.

2. She has broken the most ties in U.S. Senate history. As vice president, she has often been called upon to cast a deciding vote when the Senate is deadlocked. Last year, she cast her 32nd tiebreaker, beating the previous record of 31 set by John C. Calhoun, who was vice president from 1825 to 1832.

3. She’s short (compared to presidents past). Five-foot-four, to be exact. If elected, she would be one of the two shortest presidents in American history. (The other is James Madison.) But her height checks in at just about average for an American woman.

4 . She knows how to deliver fries with that . Ms. Harris worked at McDonald’s between her freshman and sophomore years in college. She fried the fries, worked the ice cream machine and staffed the cash register.

5. Her best friend set her up with her future husband, Doug Emhoff . Their first “date” was an hourlong phone call, and they made plans to get dinner that weekend in Los Angeles, where he was based. “I could hardly wait to fly down,” Ms. Harris wrote.

6. She loves Doritos. In her memoir, she described the night in 2016 that Donald J. Trump won the presidency (which was the same night she got elected to the U.S. Senate). “No one really knew what to say or do,” she wrote. “I sat down on the couch with Doug and ate an entire family-size bag of Classic Doritos. Didn’t share a single chip.”

7. She attended both a Black Baptist church and a Hindu temple as a child . “My mother understood very well that she was raising two Black daughters,” she wrote in her memoir. “And she was determined to make sure we would grow into confident, proud Black women.”

8. Her prosecutorial style left some in Washington flummoxed. When Ms. Harris served in the Senate, she drew attention for her sharp questioning of witnesses. In 2017, as she was grilling then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions about his role as campaign surrogate for Mr. Trump and contact with Russian officials, a visibly flustered Mr. Sessions objected. “I’m not able to be rushed this fast,” he complained at one point. “It makes me nervous.”

9. She spent her high school years in Montreal . “It was a difficult transition,” she wrote, “since the only French I knew was from my ballet classes.”

10. She failed the California bar exam on her first try. “I couldn’t get my head around it,” she wrote. She soon realized her preparation amounted to “the most half-assed performance of my life.” She passed on her second attempt.

11. She tangled with Jamie Dimon. Ms. Harris got into a heated disagreement with Mr. Dimon, J.P. Morgan’s chief executive, when she was the attorney general of California. It happened during the financial crisis, when she was pursuing relief from big banks for homeowners who had faced foreclosure. “We were like dogs in a fight,” Ms. Harris recalled in her memoir. 12. But their most recent encounter was calmer. She eventually secured more than $20 billion in relief from the banks, and despite their history, Ms. Harris and Mr. Dimon had lunch at the White House in March.

13. She likes to cook . Ms. Harris loves food. She has ribbed her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, about his “ white guy tacos ,” shared her turkey cooking tips and said that she liked to read recipes to unwind . In 2019 Ms. Harris posted a series of cooking videos to YouTube, including one with the actor Mindy Kaling that has been watched more than six million times. “Senator Harris, I say this with respect, you’re kind of a show-off,” Ms. Kaling quipped. “Right?” Ms. Harris replied.

14. She goes way back with Barack Obama. She hosted a San Francisco fund-raiser for his 2004 Senate run, then was the first major office holder in California to endorse his 2008 presidential bid, even as most Democratic heavyweights threw their support behind Hillary Clinton. The endorsement, seen by some as a political risk, paid off. Mr. Obama endorsed her bid for California attorney general in 2010, and on Tuesday he praised her as a uniter on a mission to “build a country that is more secure and more just, more equal and more free.”

15. But she once turned down a job offer in his administration. It was 2014, and Eric Holder, Mr. Obama’s attorney general, called her and said he was planning to step down. He asked if she was interested in succeeding him. She considered the offer but ultimately declined.

16. Mr. Obama once publicly opined about Ms. Harris’s looks. The former president called Ms. Harris “by far the best-looking attorney general in the country” — and later apologized. The remark came at a fund-raiser in 2013, right after he also complimented her on her smarts and dedication to the law.

17. Her grandfather was a diplomat. Ms. Harris’s maternal grandfather, P.V. Gopalan, was a civil servant in India. When she was a child, Mr. Gopalan served as a diplomat in Zambia. She has said he was among her “ favorite people ” and “ subconsciously influenced ” how she thinks.

18. She was a political activist in college. During her freshman year at Howard University in Washington, D.C., she spent many weekends on the National Mall protesting apartheid in South Africa.

19. She remains close with her line sisters in Alpha Kappa Alpha. At Howard, where she competed on the debate team and graduated in 1986, Ms. Harris joined the Black sorority. In July, she said that she kept a signed copy of a book by one of its founders, Norma Boyd, in her West Wing office “as a testament to our enduring legacy.”

20. She also belongs to a prominent, invite-only nonprofit for Black women. Ms. Harris joined The Links Incorporated in 2018. It’s one of the oldest groups of its kind in America — a service organization focused on Black Americans and other people of African ancestry. Members have included Rosa Parks, Betty Shabazz and the civil rights lawyer Constance Baker Motley.

21. Her footwear is distinct. Ms. Harris has a large collection of Chuck Taylors: a black pair, a white pair, Chucks with and without laces, Chucks for hot and cold weather, and “the platform kind for when I’m wearing a pantsuit.”

22. Her love of dancing has persisted from her childhood to the West Wing. While she was in Montreal, she started a dance group called Midnight Magic. More recently, videos of her dancing in public — to Q-Tip at a celebration of the 50th anniversary of hiphop, down an escalator , with a marching band of children — have gone viral on social media.

23. Thursday will be doubly important for Ms. Harris. She is set to formally accept the Democratic nomination on her and Mr. Emhoff’s 10th wedding anniversary.

An earlier version of this article misidentified a video in which Kamala Harris was dancing. It was from an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip hop, not her 50th birthday.

Founded in 1982 by CEO Jimmy Cheng, Symbol Yachts believes that the success of any business lies on the foundation of good people. Recognizing the importance of the artistry, skill, and craftsmanship of a mature work force, Symbol is one of a small number of Taiwanese yacht builders that have remained loyal to their roots and workers. With over 20 years of experience with various Taiwanese shipbuilders, Jimmy Cheng founded Symbol as the first production boat builder of planning hulls in Taiwan. 23 years later, Symbol has grown to become a successful exporter and builder of semi-custom motor yachts, trawlers, and pilothouse yachts.

In 1998, the world-renowned naval architect Jack Sarin signed on to become Symbol’s exclusive designer. The flowing contours of Sarin’s style are immediately evident on the 75; with signature designs such as large windows, soft curves and smooth transitions. A result of years of experience in designing yachts for many of the world’s leading builders, Sarin’s signature has become a staple of Symbol’s line today with yachts ranging from 42’ to 90’ in length.

For Symbol, beauty is not just skin deep. They have found their customers are not just looking for an inexpensive Sarin look-a-like; they expect a beautiful boat with superb engineering. Above all, because some of the finer details, such as the true artistry behind Sarin’s lines and the contour of his hulls are most apparent in physical experience, Symbol encourages sea-trials so customers can learn for themselves the difference between true value and a good bargain.

Meeting ISO 9001 and ABS requirements, Symbols facilities are situated a short distance from Kaohsiung International Airport and now covers over 110,500 square feet with more than 60% under shed. Symbol employs 150+ skilled workers, carpenters, electricians, mechanics, designers, naval architects, and engineers, most with 20+ years of experience.

The new Symbol 75’ will feature a completely open floor plan. The salon, the galley and the pilothouse will take full advantage of the large windows that abound with unobstructed views throughout. Designed as a true live-aboard, there are minimal variations in the floor’s elevation, with only a minor step up to the galley and pilothouse. This open plan allows un-encumbered socializing and freedom to move about.

Because the 75’ has an expansive flybridge helm, the wheelhouse is kept minimal in size to allow increased dining and galley accommodations. With so much of today’s integrated electronics going digital, vast instrument panel space is not really a necessity.

The Symbol 75' will be available in a five stateroom lay-out. A full beam master will be located midship with it's own private access to the salon. The Symbol 75’s engine room is located just aft and may feature a lazarette entrance just off the swim platform, a feature usually found on much larger yachts.

Things To Do

Entertainment, entertainment | lounges, yacht parties, free prime rib — what it’s like to be a social media influencer at the dnc.

U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood is interviewed on the Creator blue carpet at the Democratic National Convention at the United Center on Aug. 21, 2024. (E. Jason Wambsgans/Chicago Tribune)

Tucked away in the United Center during the Democratic National Convention , on the first and third levels of the concourse, hidden behind thin curtains and shielded from interlopers by security guards and guest lists, were two sizable lounge areas that welcomed the future. And only the future, please. You’ve probably seen the stats: The DNC had 50,000 credentialed participants, including 15,000 credentialed media. But behind those curtains were a subset of credentialed guests named Creators. There were only 200 of them. At the ends of their lanyards hung passes that read: “Creator.”

Some had only found their voice in politics in the past couple of years or so. Some had only graduated from high school in the past couple of years or so. Most didn’t see themselves as journalists per se , yet they do offer information. So they’re … Creators , though you know them better as “social-media influencers,” the newest class of media.

The DNC will leave Chicago soon.

But the influence from these influencers — that will go on.

For the first time, the DNC invited influencers to be credentialed alongside those from traditional media, such as newspapers, TV and other species of Jurassic-era influence. It’s part of Democrat efforts to reach young voters where they are — in front of TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Also, it’s a lot easier to spread a consistent message when your messengers are unabashedly supportive. Cayana Mackey-Nance, director of digital strategy for the DNC, wrote in a statement: “Bringing creators to our convention will multiply our reach and ensure that everyone can witness democracy in action.” Or as one creator told CNN succinctly: “(Voters) trust us more than mainstream media.”

But what exactly does this look like?

It looks like, on the second night of the DNC, Chris Mowrey, 22, of Atlanta, wearing an ice-blue suit and a black button-down shirt open at the collar, mingling in the Creator Lounge with peers, many of whom, to different stylish degrees, know they belong here. Most were Gen Z or millennials. Scrawled across one of the walls of the lounge was a kind of mission statement, a reminder of their purpose here: “Creators for Kamala.” Mowrey pointed around the room to several internet stars, some finally meeting each other IRL, and some catching up, and some fanboy and fangirling over favorite follows.

That woman there — one million followers.

That guy there — 10 million followers.

The comedy duo The Good Liars, Davram Stiefler, left, and Jason Selvig, center, interview former Georgia state Rep. Stacey Abrams in the Creators blue carpet area during the Democratic National Convention at the United Center on Aug. 21, 2024. (E. Jason Wambsgans/Chicago Tribune)

Collectively, the audience for the Creators in this lounge alone outstripped most legacy media groups. Mowrey himself has a comparatively meager 500,000 followers across social media platforms and only discovered his political voice in 2022. He explained:

“Really, the way this started was one day, randomly, I put down my phone in my car and started screaming passionately about politics. Friends have always known me as a raging liberal so I would post private stories on Instagram just for friends. One day I’m bored, I decided I going to post on TikTok and it kind of went viral. In 2022, during the midterms in Georgia, one of those first videos was me ranting about the Republican that Trump endorsed: Herschel Walker, a terrible guy, a mess. I was just ranting how (expletive) he was. Every day I posted something different, whatever was on my mind. But my main passion has really been just hating Donald Trump. I hate him so much.

“My main focus now is making sure Kamala Harris gets elected, and (the DNC) are very receptive to what we need, giving us access, interviews — just treating us like media.”

The DNC action is at the United Center. But the randomness and behind-the-scenes stuff is at McCormick Place.

Nearby, at the Creator Lounge’s (open) bar, Olivia Julianna waited for her drink. She wore a purple suit, and around her neck hung another symbol of her status, even among fellow Creators, a badge reading: “Suite Level Access.” She’s 21, has more than one million social media followers, and as she once told TeenVogue, she’s a “plus-size queer Latina from rural Southeast Texas enrolled in community college classes.” She was also one of five Creators picked to give a speech on the floor. Many politicians and activists spend entire careers trying to secure that kind of A-list platform.

Asked if she thought of herself as a kind of journalist, she laughed and said, “I think of myself as a kind of Democratic Party operative,” then she added, “No, the ability to see the process here, and to comment on it as you watch the process? That means I get to open the process up to people who have no idea about it. Creators have very special connections that can make something like this so personal to people who follow them.”

Hence, being treated remarkably well.

Creators mingle and produce content in a Creators Lounge at the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 21, 2024. (E. Jason Wambsgans/Chicago Tribune)

Creators had these two lounges inside the United Center that offered open bars, free shaved prime rib sandwiches , free soft pretzels, free cookies, and lots of room to stretch. They had a dedicated perch on the convention floor for making fresh content. They had a snazzy “blue carpet” area set against a large curved video screen to shoot interviews. They got exclusive parties, but mainly: They got the kind of access to the United Center that many working journalists did not.

Sitting in a leather chair, reading his phone, was Jamel Franklin, a Chicago native relocated to Los Angeles. He wore a tangerine cap with “God Bless the South Side” in white lettering across the front. The day before, he attended a Creator yacht party on Lake Michigan and chatted with Gwen Walz, first lady of Minnesota, and Meena Harris, vice presidential niece. He had a packed schedule. He was headed to caucus meetings. His audience, he said, is largely young, Black and educated, and his content is a mix of politics, pop culture and wellness.

“Jaime Harrison (chair of the Democratic Party) came to talk to some of us the other day, and he said they’re investing in Creators, and because of that, some of the older press might seem a little … annoyed. But the way he put it, they weren’t doing more for Creators, they’re just giving us our own space, too.”

No, no, he was told, they were definitely doing more.

Indeed, tell a traditional journalist here scrounging for a phone cord or even an open electric socket for their laptop about the free prime rib and the arena access and the yacht parties, and they look stricken, unbelieving, but then understanding, resigned. At first, it could be somewhat hard to tell Creators from journalists here — many of both had a tendency to rush through crowds carrying folded tripods topped with cellphones.

But there’s only one Knowa De Baraso of Georgia. He’s 12 and possesses the kind of confidence most adults don’t show in their dreams. He has 30,000 followers on Twitter alone; he came to Chicago with his parents, a security detail and press agents. He said that the first thing that he does when he wakes up is Google the name “Kamala Harris.”

Earlier in the day, he said, he stopped Mike Lindell, the My Pillow guy (and Trump supporter), in the United Center. For his camera, De Baraso got into it with Lindell about 2020 Georgia election misinformation. “He disrespected me,” De Baraso said. “That’s OK. He didn’t have his facts and it showed. On Monday, I interviewed Charlie Kirk and I exposed him, too.” Specifically, De Baraso got the conservative activist to admit on camera he thought the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a “mistake.” De Baraso has also met with Harris and President Joe Biden, both of whom, he notes, “remembered my name.”

Talk to enough Creators, though, and you realize it’s not the size of their audiences that landed them credentials, but rather the demographics of those audiences. AustinShow, an online personality with around four million followers who posts about show business, said: “People by now understand I am openly queer and openly passionate about LBGTQ rights, typically aligned with the Democratic Party,” and so the night before he was invited to a Creators-only warehouse party named “Hotties For Harris.” Sam Schwartz, a Florida influencer whose accounts focus on gun control, said, “I like to post the news when a Democrat delivers on something because a lot of young people believe Democrats don’t do anything.”

They’re really bad at promotion, he said.

In the Creator Lounge on the third level of the United Center, Abbie McAdams, 21, of Colorado, whose 8,000-ish social media followers made her one of the smaller Creators at the DNC, prepared her next posting at a long tall bar table across from the free pretzels. She is a self-described “menstrual equity advocate, focused on reproductive freedom and normalizing period experience — the things we’re told not to talk about in public.” She said that her TikTok following has grown three-fold during the DNC alone.

“Really, I’m not used to this treatment,” she said. “But I also don’t need to be wined and dined to go to something like this. I have been passionate about electoral politics, so all this is bonus. There’s like a Creator here for every cause and industry. I met the creators of a lesbian podcast. I met a Creator who just runs a meme account. It makes so much sense. Someone (for the DNC) was very intentional with all this, making sure that Creators could create while they were here. As far as I have seen, it also working.”

Between all the parties and meet-and-greets.

Julianna said she had been running around so much during the convention, she hadn’t really had time to post. Just a few selfies of her posing with governors and other elected officials. “The way I see it, you bank a ton of content while you are here, then later you release it. Everyone is posting from the DNC right now, but if I wait with material, in a few weeks, leading up to November 5, it’s all new again. You keep the momentum going.”
