All-new Nelson Mandela Bay Yacht Club opens

A lively party with food and fizz in the port elizabeth harbour.

A lively party with food and fizz aplenty was held in the Port Elizabeth harbour last Thursday to celebrate the official opening of the all-new Nelson Mandela Bay Yacht Club. Tourism and Transnet bigwigs rubbed shoulders with politicians and special guests such as EP Cricket’s Donovan May and the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants. Everyone either sipped cocktails or bubbly, or kept the portable G&T bar properly on the hop while enjoying a steady stream of canapes and live music on the ground floor at the back of the smartened up venue overlooking the harbour. Some VIP’s (moi included!) also did a quick cruise of the bay on Stampede Cruises’ slick, 38-foot power catamaran, and spotted a humpback whale with its calf within mere minutes of leaving the harbour. Guests then headed up the stairs for some excellent sushi on the semi-enclosed deck while chilling to the cool-cat sounds of Occasion DJs. Dinner followed in the revamped restaurant with its world-class view. he place was packed but the waiters coped well, swiftly descending with huge platters of fried fish and calamari, steak, salads and more. The restaurant specialises in seafood and sushi, but also has steaks, burgers and chicken. For light eaters there are wraps and salads. It’s true many will miss the “old” Algoa Bay Yacht Club but the time had surely come for a changing of the guard. Finecorp Trading 113 was awarded the tender in February. Its founder, Justin Carelson, hails from Helenvale, and for him and his team the club is an important – and long-overdue – empowerment initiative. GM Ruben Rosales, a Chilean by birth, says numerous renovations were done and the venue has already been visited by several past club members, along with new patrons. The Nelson Mandela Bay Yacht Club is on 041-582-2605 and is now also open for breakfast from 8am.

nelson mandela bay yacht club menu

The Nelson Mandela Bay Yacht Club seemed to be the perfect place to spend an afternoon with an old friend visiting from the UK.

I have long been a fan of this location and regularly visited the old Algoa Bay Yacht Club because of its great view, sunny deck, well stocked pub and great menu.

The recent change of tenant has brought about some significant improvements while still keeping the best parts of the old club as they were.

Actually, Home Food and Travel offers a lot more than just reviews of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.  We also visit great destinations, receive advice from interior designers and stop to smell the roses and taste the coffee.

Our team of journalists are seasoned travels and love visiting the myriad of exciting places around South Africa.  Whether it is off the beaten track or in the heart of the top attractions of the country, we’ll be there,

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation

So what is the right accommodation ?  Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.

Expensive is not always better.  Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday.  They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.

The reason for your travels will also affect your choice.  A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.

Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great  restaurant  offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great  spa  experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed  adventure  activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.

On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities

If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.

If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.

We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.

See you  on the road !

About the Publisher, Graeme Lund

The tourism industry has been my bread and butter for most of my life.  It started with my incorporating a tour company in 1995 just as South Africa was opening to international tourism. I was the first qualified field guide in the Eastern Cape and later became the approved tour guide trainer for the region.  At various times I have owned a tourist information office, an advertising agency specializing in marketing tourism businesses,  sat on the board of directors of various tourism organisations and a been a publisher of travel magazines and websites.

Southern Africa is my home and the diversity of cultures,  scenery and fauna and flora are what make it so special.  I have a passion for exploring and have done so by driving, hiking, strolling, cycling, boating, sailing, diving and flying and know that their is still so much more to see.

Along the way their are so many amazing places to stay and to eat and they are an integral part of what makes this such a special place. These private and public tourism enterprises play a huge part in ensuring that our natural environment remains intact.

I am a fervent conservationist.  I have served on the Board of Trustees of Bayworld and am currently a director of Bay Action Network Alliance. I believe that tourism is one of the few effective ways of protecting a dwindling natural heritage in the face of overpopulation and irresponsible and selfish exploitation of natural resources. Sadly conservation for conservation sake is as out of date as fax machines and typewriters.  Animals and conservation areas must make more money from tourism than they can from exploitation to ensure their long term survival.  It is for this reason that I love working with responsible tourism organizations around Southern Africa.

Whale, Dolphin & Penguin Island Cruise in Port Elizabeth to St Croix

  • Featured Cruise Packages

We meet on the grass area at Nelson Mandela Bay Yacht Club in the Port Elizabeth Harbour at 8.00am (time may vary on occasion to accommodate guests due to circumstances, booked guests will be asked/notified of any changes). We will take you on a catamaran to see the whales, dolphins and African Penguins on St. Croix Island and Brenton Island.

whaledolphinpenguin1.png

What can you expect to see?

The whale season begins in June when we see humpback whales moving along the coast as they head up the East coast of Africa towards their breeding grounds. Humpback whales can be seen in Algoa Bay between June and early January, reaching peaks in July/August and again in November/December when they make their return journey, with calves in tow. Southern right whales can be seen from July to October as they enter the safety of the bay to give birth. Southern right whales are usually seen very close inshore and often nearby to the harbour. They are the most frequently observed whales along the South African coast.

Indo-pacific bottlenose dolphins are the most frequently observed dolphins in the bay and can be spotted all year round, in groups from 10-400. These playful dolphins are mostly found in shallow waters either near the beaches or around St Croix Island, and tend to come right up to the boat and ride along in the bow waves. Common dolphins are also a spectacular sight as they are seen in groups of 1000-2000, swimming along at great speeds. These dolphins are often spotted from January to June as they follow large shoals of baitfish which move past the bay. We also get humpback dolphins in Algoa Bay, which usually occur in much smaller groups, anywhere between 1 and 20, and are most commonly seen during the summer months.

St Croix is home to 3000 African penguins and is a very important breeding colony situated in a Marine Protected Area (we have lost 90% in 14 years). It is here where you will get a close-up encounter with these comical birds. The African penguin’s breeding season reaches its peak between March and May, when you may be able to see the chicks from the boat. As well as African penguins, both St. Croix and Brenton Island are inhabited by the endangered African black oystercatcher, white-breasted cormorants and Cape cormorants. The St. Croix Island group, along with the Bird Island group, became part of the Addo Elephant National Park, allowing rangers to patrol the islands in aid of conservation efforts to protect the African penguin population. As they are Marine Protected Areas, please note that you are not allowed to actually go on to the islands. Light refreshments and snacks are served during the cruise.

4_dsc4177_resized.jpg

What other marine life may we encounter?

Next to the above mentioned animals you have the opportunity to see of spotting white-breasted cormorants, Cape cormorants, bryde’s whales, minke whales, Cape fur seals, various species of sharks, Cape gannets and various species of pelagic birds including terns, petrels, skuas, shearwaters and albatrosses.

We arrive back at port by about 12.00pm/12.30pm. (If guests are enjoying the sightings and not in a rush to get back to catch a flight or shuttle, we may run a little late)
