Excess 15 first look: This vibrant catamaran can sail in the lightest of winds

  • Toby Hodges
  • July 23, 2020

This is the first model from a new Groupe Beneteau brand launched at Cannes Boat Show. Toby Hodges gives his first impressions following a sea trial off Barcelona

Launching an entirely new sailing brand in this day and age of economic uncertainty is a rare, brave move. XCS or Excess is a new catamaran business, an arm of the Groupe Beneteau empire, forged from a desire to cater to a younger, more active generation.

Its launch was accompanied by some heavyweight marketing hype, with subtle details of parts of the designs released as teasers over the last year. Build something up too much, though, and you risk an anticlimax.

The group has stuck to the same designers used for its established Lagoon brand, VPLP and Nauta, and in its haste to get an unprecedented five new Excess models out in just 18 months, it elected to adapt existing Lagoon moulds for its first two models, the Excess 12 (Lagoon 39 hulls) and Excess 15 (Lagoon 50 hulls).

Of course, it makes financial sense to share design and manufacturing knowledge with its sister company where possible but, for me, these first Excess models appear too similar to that well-established brand of popular catamarans.

The principal differences are that the helm stations have been moved to the aft quarters to give more direct sailing feedback, retractable biminis are an option to open up the cockpits to the sun, and the interiors are much brighter.

Weight has also been saved when compared with the Lagoon models, but as Lagoons are considered to be the heaviest production catamarans in the market anyway, the Excess is arguably no more performance-orientated than competitor cruising cat brands.

And the winners of the European Yacht of the Year 2020 are…

Yachting World has been a jury member for the European Yacht of the Year awards since its inception in 2004.…

The yard tried to save weight everywhere, product manager Bruno Belmont explains, shaving one tonne over target weight for the Excess 15 (compared to the Lagoon 50). “The big difference is how quickly you kill the engine,” he insisted when we first viewed the new Excess models at Cannes Boat Show. Belmont says that happens in as little as 5 knots breeze, or 1-2 knots sooner than a comparable Lagoon.

Our subsequent sailing trials proved his point. On a day where we would ordinarily have had to resort to motoring a cruising cat of this size, we were able nearly to match true wind speeds under Code 0 and asymmetric spinnaker (6 in 7 knots and 7 in 8 knots). Impressive stuff.

We were sailing the Excess 15 Pulse Line during the European Yacht of the Year trials. This has a taller mast and longer bowsprit than the standard boat and features graphics on the hull. Although the standard boat starts at €625,000, this Pulse model with its many extra options came in at €925,000 (ex. VAT). As a comparison, a standard Excess is more expensive than a Lagoon or Fountaine Pajot but includes more equipment.

Excess-15-CNB-Sea-Trial-multihull-yacht-test-running-shot-tall-credit-Christophe-Launay

The Pulse has a taller mast, which helped the Excess sail in light airs, but rudder pressure issues were a concern. Photo: Christophe Launay

The rigs have very high aspect mainsails with short booms sheeted right aft. Shifting the centre of effort of the sail further aft, combined with the move to direct steering, gives greater response to the helm. But the benefits were marred by vibrations from the rudders.

My fellow judges also experienced problems with steering, especially when sailing in anything above 15 knots, where the pressure on the helm became unreasonably heavy. Excess is investigating the issue with the design team.

Sailors coming to the Excess 15 from monohulls may find the aft helm positions more familiar. A great deal of focus has been placed on making sure there is good visibility here, by using vertical and clear coachroof windows and forward-looking cameras fed to helm displays. The running rigging leads into large tail bags close to hand, which makes the Excess 15 easy to sail short-handed, yet leaves space for crew to contribute.

For the interior, the use of wood was minimised wherever possible to create a vibrant look with lots of bright areas. Elsewhere the accommodation is conventional, available with layouts from three-cabins to suit private use through to six cabins and six heads for the catamaran charter market.

The fact that we could sail at all in such light breeze shows that the design and lighter weight of the Excess 15 pays off. But this was the performance version of the 15. It may be lighter than an equivalent Lagoon, but it is no lighter than many similar sized standard production cats. Such a concept is surely flawed if you need to add more and more sail area to encourage the weight to move.

The test boat, with all its extras, costs over €1m taxed. The money appears to go on space and gadgets rather than build or finish quality. However, a full judgement is reserved until I have seen an entirely new Excess 15 – once any teething problems have been ironed out – and have had the chance to sail it in proper winds.

Excess 15 Boat Review

Catamaran 15

Excess catamaran 15. Excess world and explore perfectly designed catamarans inspired by racing for cruising pleasure.

Right up front, let me say three things about the new Excess 15, which I got to sail with my Boat of the Year colleagues this past fall in ocean waters off Fort Lauderdale, Florida: It’s a big, roomy cruising cat that’s super easy to handle and really fun to sail. OK, make it four things: We all liked the boat. A lot.

Excess Catamarans is a new brand, just two years old, launched by French builder Group Beneteau , and designed to reach a segment of the multihull market where it saw an opening: namely monohull sailors who appreciate the actual sailing aspect of cruising but who are open to the creature comforts a multihull has to offer.

Hey, that’s me!

I do the majority of my sailing on a single hull. I appreciate the thrill when the rail occasionally dips into the water. I like the feedback that I get from the wheel, the water rushing past, a little spray in my face from time to time. But then again, some of my favorite adventures have taken place on two hulls. Lounging on the tramp in a pretty anchorage, power reaching from island to island, plenty of room to take family and friends along, private cabins and multiple spaces to gather—what’s not to like about those aspects of a cruising cat?

I found that the Excess 15 borrowed liberally from both worlds. It is spacious, can be loaded up with options, and everybody aboard is going to want to take a turn at the wheel. Trust me on this; the 15 is downright sporty to drive, especially with the code zero unrolled.

The boat’s standard configuration is a square-top main and self-tending jib, but Excess also offers what it calls its Pulse package, with a 3-foot-taller mast, bowsprit and code zero set on a continuous-line furler. We got to sail this power-packed solent-rig version, and it’s the one I’d consider if I were writing a check.

Upwind, the self-tending jib makes the boat simple to singlehand. In 10 to 12 knots of wind, the speedo hovered in the high 7-knot range, and tacking required only a turn of the wheel and adjustment of the Harken electric traveler. When we bore off onto a reach, we lost a knot or so of speed, but conditions were perfect to furl the jib and deploy the big reacher. Immediately, the speedo jumped to 10 and change, and off we went.

I found that the locations of the twin wheels—aft and outboard on either transom—were also a value add. I’ve sailed aboard cats with the helm on a flybridge or raised seat adjacent to the aft bulkhead, and I’ve felt disconnected from the water, and sometimes the rest of the crew if they’ve wandered off to some other corner of the boat. On the Excess, the interaction with others on board seemed more monohull-like, with everyone in the cockpit and within earshot.

RELATED: Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 54 Boat Review

Said cockpit features an inviting dining table to port surrounded by an L-shaped couch, a large lounge opposite, and a padded bench seat across the transom between fold-down helm seats. Overhead, the center of the Bimini slides open to let the sunlight pour in, and provides an excellent view of the mainsail while underway. On the boat we sailed, cockpit gatherings were further encouraged by adding a sink, fridge and ice maker to the amenities.

In the saloon, glass windows all around and a large slider door aft offer a 360-degree look at the world, while also providing relatively good visibility forward from the helms. An L-shaped galley with sink, stove, oven and microwave is located in the aft port corner of the main cabin; opposite is a drawer-style fridge and freezer, with more counter space above them. A second large table and another L-shaped couch are forward.

The boat we sailed had a traditional three-cabin layout, with the owner’s quarters occupying the starboard hull; two en suite guest cabins filled the port hull, along with another freezer amidships. The boat can also be configured with four en suite berths, or with six cabins and six heads (two additional crew berths are available in the forepeaks), which should prove popular with the charter crowd.

The base price for the 15 is $737,000, but the boat we sailed, delivered to the US and loaded with options—including a bow thruster and FLIR cameras—is right around $950,000, reflecting the benefits and costs of living and sailing to excess.

Excess 15 Details

The Excess 15 is the flagship of the Excess line of catamarans. Measuring 48’5” LOA, its beam is 26’4”, and draft is 4’7”. This is a big catamaran, capable of sleeping up to 14 people in its optional six-cabin layout.

Like all Excess catamarans, the Excess 15 is intended to make performance a priority on the modern cruising catamaran. Based on a hull shared with the Lagoon 50, the builder shaved a full ton of weight out of the boat, and in light air, that is quite noticeable. Where other cats are motoring in light air, the Excess 15 continues sailing, using its asymmetrical spinnaker or Code 0 to harness the breeze.

Group Beneteau created the Excess brand to showcase its innovation in building boats that sailors will love to sail while also providing the benefits and comfortable accommodations of a modern cruising catamaran. The Excess 15 does this particularly well and will prove a popular alternative for cruisers who need the space and accommodations of a big catamaran.

There are two aft helm stations, with unrestricted visibility forward over wide side decks, much like sailing a monohull. The lack of window tinting gives the person at either helm great visibility across the saloon to the other side of the boat. Any small blind spot can be eliminated by leaning across the helm seat a few inches. Great sight lines were important design criterion for the Excess line.

As the primary helm, the starboard station has all halyards and sheets led aft, with Harken winches at both helms to assist in raising and unfurling the sail and adjust the sheets. The builder includes dedicated bags to hold the jumble of lines that normally clutter the cockpit and helm.

To provide the highest degree of connection between sails and rudders, the steering system uses Dyneema lines as steering cables to provide a high level of feedback at the wheel. One will be able to feel developing weather helm and adjust sails or course accordingly.

There are full engine instrumentation and navigation modules at each helm station, and a small bimini over each helm. The helms can be enclosed as well.

The Excess 15 comes in three configurations: a three-cabin layout with three heads (with separate showers), a four-cabin layout with four heads (with separate showers), and a six-cabin layout with six heads (showers are part of the head). Clearly the layout with three cabins will be the owner version of this boat.

The standard boat has two water tanks, each with a capacity of 63 gallons. There is a 32-gallon holding tank in each hull. And the Excess 15 has two aluminum fuel tanks that each hold 137 gallons of fuel for the pair of 57hp Yanmar 4JH57 saildrives.

The Excess 15 cockpit and interior offer enormous living spaces, light and bright because of the builder’s choice of light fabric, honey-colored furniture, white wall covering, and sand plywood flooring. The many windows and opening hatches provide excellent ventilation.

The saloon is much like a large living room, with an aft-facing galley, to satisfy any gourmet chef, with stainless-steel appliances and plenty of storage. Visibility in the saloon is fully 360 degrees. A large saloon table, surrounded by a large L-shaped settee and moveable bench seat, is electrically raised and lowered to serve as coffee table during the day and then raise and unfold when it needs to be a dining table for a large party.

Lockers and drawers are plentiful around the boat and in all staterooms.

The starboard hull is the master stateroom, and the full length of the interior functions as a master suite, including his and her’s vanities and sinks. A huge forward shower is also an exceptional feature on this catamaran.

There are many options for the Excess 15 and performance packages to improve its sailing capabilities, especially in light air. The Pulse Line pack includes a taller mast for greater sail area, a squared-off mainsail and self-tacking jib in a higher quality gray, tri-radial sail material. The package also equips the boat with all deck hardware for a spinnaker pole and hardware/furler for a Code 0.

Also included with this optional package are bright orange composite steering wheels, and special hull graphics.

The benefits of the Pulse Line pack mean one can shut down the engine sooner or continue sailing even in light air. And the boat will look more like a boat set up for racing...while those aboard enjoy life on a luxurious modern catamaran.

The Excess 15, especially with the hull graphics and colorful trim, will turn heads as she sails past slower cats and monohulls. She is lighter and more slippery than her Lagoon counterpart. And while the competent Lagoon will safely take you anywhere in the world at 6-7 knots, the Excess 15 will be a rocket ship by comparison.

And that is the essence of the Excess line. Be immoderate.

Lagoon 50 vs Excess 15

Lagoon 50 - Unveiled in 2017, the Lagoon 50, along with the 40, 42 and 46 represent the latest generation models designed by the world leader in cruising catamarans. When she was first launched, she fitted into the range between the best-selling Lagoon 450 and the 52. Her ambition was to remain accessible to a family crew and offer maximum comfort.

Excess 15 - The Excess range, launched by the Bénéteau Group just over a year ago, stands out from the Lagoon range by its improved performance and attention to the pleasure of sailing. The Excess 15 shares the same chassis as the Lagoon 50, and this allows us to make relevant comparisons between the two models.

50 feet - or almost - and nearly 8 tons of payload: the characteristics of the Lagoon 50 make it an ideal craft for blue water cruising with all the comforts. But is such a unit of more than 20 tons lightship weight still manageable by a family? This is indeed the objective set by the builder. While larger models are most often entrusted, in practice, to a professional skipper, the Lagoon 50 is well designed to be manageable for a family crew.

LATEST GENERATION LAGOON

Malgré un franc-bord et des surfaces Despite having significant freeboard and glazed surfaces, the overall style of the boat remains fluid. Longitudinal ribs, hull portlights integrated into reveals, chines, colored stripes between the coachroof windows and the bimini, the height of the plunging bows... so many small details that refine a voluminous catamaran. This design research is a direct result of the work carried out on the Lagoon 42, and it was applied with the same success on the 40 and the 50, a year later, then on the 46. If the Lagoon 39 and the 52 began the trend of the aft-set mast, back in 20...

Sail Performance

catamarano excess 15

Description

With an area of 125 m² (1,345 sq ft) and her 25-meter (82’) high mast, the Excess 15 is the largest in the new Bénéteau Group family. In addition to her large spaces, this boat has twin helm stations, located at the after end of each hull, which are designed to increase the pleasure of sailing. As for the interior, there’s a huge raised saloon/dining area with a 360° view of the sea through non-smoked bay windows. Depending on the desired space, you can choose between a three, four or even six double cabin version. The catamaran's 8-meter (26’3”) beam offers a cockpit large enough to accommodate a beautiful table, around which eight people can easily sit.

I just purchased my first large boat (my dreamboat) and Michael Streng and the rest of TMC was amazing! I really felt like I was a VIP customer because they were fast and easy to communicate with and worked ahead of me. It really was a treat and I would use them again any day!

— Collin Simmons

Andrew Hodgdon and The Multihull Company have done an extraordinary job facilitating the sale of our catamaran. There were a couple of challenges (geography and timing) that made this sale a little tricky, but, as usual, Andrew was amazing. I’ve been buying and selling cruising boats for over 12 years and Andrew is, without a doubt, the best broker I’ve worked with.

— Mort Orlov

Andrew Hodgdon at TMC-St. Augustine kept us thoroughly informed during the sale of our boat and took the extra steps necessary to complete the deal. His knowledge of the process made a complex deal very easy. Needless to say, we are extremely happy and satisfied with the job that Andrew did.

— David Baxter

A shout out to Andrew Holland at the TMC main office, who handled the closing transaction of the sale of our boat. Very professional and thorough. Thank you!!

No 'immunity' for Mesa officer in 2018 excessive force case

catamarano excess 15

A Mesa man can take his excessive force lawsuit to trial against one of four officers involved in his brutal 2018 arrest, according to a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling.

The federal appeals court issued its opinion Monday, partially overturning a lower court judge’s ruling in favor of qualified immunity for all the officers.

The panel of three judges heard oral arguments in the case in May 2023.

2018 arrest

Lawsuit plaintiff Cole Spencer had been a passenger in a car that two SWAT officers stopped for a minor traffic violation in 2018. According to the police report, Spencer was asked his name but gave a fake one. After that, Spencer was asked to step out of the car.

When one officer tried to handcuff and arrest him, Spencer admitted to attempting to get away.

Mesa SWAT Officer Aaron Pew was one of the officers who held down Spencer as they tried to arrest and handcuff him. According to the Mesa police report, Spencer displayed superhuman strength during a struggle with officers. It lasted three minutes before he was handcuffed.

Body-worn camera video, from two Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies who arrived during the arrest, showed Spencer lying face down as Pew kneed him in the head, smashed his face repeatedly into the ground, and wrapped both hands tightly around his neck.

"This guy Pew," Spencer said in a 2020 phone call with ABC15. "He sadistically inflicted all this onto me."

However, an attorney for the City of Mesa and their officers defended the heightened use of force, calling the situation “chaotic,” “very stressful,” and a “rapidly evolving situation.”

Court decisions

In 2021, a federal district court judge found qualified immunity should apply to all the officers involved: two Mesa officers and two MCSO deputies. Qualified immunity is a legal doctrine that protects government officials, including law enforcement officers, from individual liability in a lawsuit unless the official violated a clearly established statutory or constitutional right.

Spencer appealed the decision to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. While the panel of judges traveled to Phoenix to hear the case in May 2023, a decision was not released until September 2024.

The appellate judges found Pew should not be entitled to qualified immunity protection, due to what happened after Spencer was handcuffed lying face down on the ground. The judges noted that Pew kneeled on Spencer’s back for three minutes, with the exception of a few seconds’ break.

According to the court’s written opinion, Spencer “complained that he could not breathe at least four separate times, “and “Pew simultaneously had his right knee on Spencer’s head and his left knee on Spencer’s back for more than 10 seconds.”

After looking at the court rulings in a similar case, the judges concluded, "Every reasonable officer would recognize that full-body-weight compression of a then largely "compliant, prone, and handcuffed individual despite his pleas for air involve[d] a degree of force that is greater than reasonable."

They remanded the lawsuit to the Federal district court with Pew as the only defendant. Spencer can now move for a trial in the case.

Spencer told ABC15 he’s hoping that an attorney will take his case and represent him before the jury. Spencer said he’d previously been unable to hire a civil attorney to assist him and has mostly served as his own legal counsel.

Pew’s history

Since 2013, Pew has been cleared in five separate claims of excessive force, including the July 2020 bean bagging of Lorenzo Jones , who had his hands up and his small children nearby. Mesa police told ABC15 Tuesday that Pew also was accused of excessive force in 2022. Internal investigators sustained that complaint and Pew was disciplined, according to a department spokesperson.

Pew is no longer on the SWAT team. He currently works in Mesa as a sergeant on the bike squad, according to an MPD spokeswoman.

Spencer faced multiple charges after his 2018 arrest, he pleaded guilty to a prior burglary and to aggravated assault for pushing one officer just prior to the beating. He is currently in an Arizona prison.

The federal case, which is a civil lawsuit, would not affect Spencer’s prison sentence.

ABC15 asked civil rights attorney Benjamin Taylor about the impact of the appeals court decision.

He said other local law enforcement agencies should consider this ruling as they train officers in arrest techniques.

“If they know that a person is handcuffed and face down, they shouldn't allow their officers to have a knee back or their neck for a long period of time when the person is no longer a threat,” Taylor said.

The Mesa Police Department declined to comment on the pending lawsuit. However, a spokesperson said MPD has updated its training since 2021 “to focus on Police Jiu Jitsu techniques” that put “weight on the hips, and away from neck and spine.”
