Seafarers in Spain just got a swish new place to dock their superyachts.

Island Global Yachting (IGY) opened a luxe marina in the busy port city of Málaga on July 15, as reported by the SuperYacht Times . Designed for the world’s largest superyachts, the IGY Málaga Marina offers a total of 33 berths that can each accommodate vessels measuring up to 590 feet.

Working with Ocean Capital Partners, IGY redeveloped Málaga’s existing marina and added new services and amenities, including 24-hour security, full vessel concierge, dockside parking and in-slip waste removal. Captain and crew facilities include a high-tech fitness center and a business hub. The adjacent beach also offers a host of restaurants and shops, while the nearby city is packed with interesting landmarks and museums.

IGY Málaga Marina offers 300 berths.  IGY

East of Gibraltar, Málaga is perfectly positioned to support vessels in the Mediterranean. With year-round berthing, it’s an ideal winter haven and is also a great place for yachts to prepare for transatlantic voyages. What’s more, the Málaga airport is only 20 minutes away from the marina. As an added bonus, the new marina is expected to generate $106 million (€104 million) annually and create 800 new jobs.

The new destination is IGY’s third marina in the western Mediterranean, alongside its existing outposts in Sète and Sardinia. The company claims that more than 500 clients cruised near Málaga in 2018, making it a perfect addition to its ever-expanding portfolio. The Florida-based outfit, which was founded in 2005, now helms a total of 24 marinas across 13 countries. Collectively, IGY’s 4,700 berths welcome roughly 8,000 yachtsmen every year.

Málaga San Andres Marina

The Málaga San Andres Marina is expected to open in 2024.

IGY is also part of a team of marine heavyweights working on another $60 million development in Málaga. Scheduled to open in 2024, it will comprise a new 600-berth marina (Málaga San Andres Marina) for vessels up to 196 feet and a commercial real estate area designed by renowned Spanish architect José Seguí.

It sounds like Málaga is the place to be.

IGY Málaga Marina: The Perfect Superyacht Stopover Cruising East or West

yacht malaga marina

The port city of Málaga on the Costa del Sol in Andalusia is one of the world’s oldest, founded in the 8th century B.C. by the Phoenicians and nestled into the super modern skyline, the city’s hilltop citadels of the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro provide an enduring reminder of Moorish rule.

Following a state-of-the-art redevelopment program, IGY Málaga Marina is now the first dedicated and bespoke superyacht marina when entering the Med, the perfect stopover when transiting east or west and an attractive location for winter berthing.

Located in a buzzing city centre location situated just 37 miles from Gibraltar and 10 minute drive from Málaga International airport, this Costa del Sol capital-based marina offers an abundance of world-class provisioning options. It’s no surprise then, to discover that last summer saw a new record length of 141 metres berthing at this modern deep water marina.

Málaga’s oceanic climate is characterised by mild winters, with the coldest month of the year, January, boasting average temperatures of 17 degrees centigrade, making IGY Málaga Marina a tempting option for winter berthing.

Indeed, the temperate winter climate means the all-season yachtie can choose from a multitude of outdoor leisure options year-round. Art is another huge part of the attraction - as the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, Málaga boasts the incredible number of 39 museums for a city of its size.

Set against a picturesque backdrop which combines ancient historical monuments with magnificent 21st century architecture, this flagship IGY marina offers all the comforts you could desire while soaking up the atmosphere of this stunning city of contrasts.

A marina at the heart of the city

With its 2.5km of state-of-the-art piers, IGY Málaga Marina is conveniently situated at the gateway to the city centre - just a hop and a skip from the cathedral, with easy access to the region’s 16 beaches. "The location is perfect," adds IGY’s front desk manager Alejandra Cruces. ‘You cross the street and in 500m, you are at the cathedral in the heart of the city centre, which is compact, totally safe and has everything you need."

Malaga Marina 1200x630

The two-year renovation has seen the creation of 33 slips, 31 of which are dedicated to superyachts of up to 180m and two reserved for local tourist boats. "We have almost 800m of berthing space so it’s very versatile," explains Alejandra. "This means we can house yachts of 180m plus and can reconfigure the layout according to demand."

Piers 1 and 2 offer slips to superyachts from 30m upwards with a 2000 amp power supply which makes the marina one of the highest powered of its kind. "The beauty is that the largest vessels can turn off their engines and connect to our supply instead of using up their fuel," adds Alejandra. "It’s this, plus our very calm waters - unusual for many marinas - which will be a big attraction for larger vessels."

Indeed such still waters year-round are unusual for a port in this position. "There was a lot of water movement here before work started, so we constructed two large dikes to minimise it and ensure 360 wave-free days," explains Alejandra. "It was a big problem for local yacht owners before, as the waves hit the end of the port and boats were moving all the time, but this will make the waters calmer and offers more protection."

Add to this, 24hr security and surveillance, a 24/7 concierge service and an arid climate which boasts average daytime winter temperatures of 17–20 degrees, and you can see just a few of the myriad benefits IGY Málaga Marina has to offer discerning yacht owners.

Two main marina buildings comprise an office with an adjacent restaurant with a beautiful terrace overlooking the picturesque marina. The Dockmaster’s office will also have a small crew area and a second terrace overhanging the sea for crew members to enjoy.

Just a few steps from IGY Málaga Marina, owners and crew can enjoy access to the leisure facilities of the sports complex, featuring a gym, tennis courts, and indoor swimming pool. There will even be a couple of high-end marina pool cars for owners and crew to use while staying onsite.

Myriad attractions along the Costa del Sol

Venture offsite and set sail for some of the Costa del Sol’s most memorable routes and anchorages including the architectural showcase that is Sotogrande (56 miles), Puerto Banus - playground of the rich and famous (38 miles), the enchantingly beautiful Cascada de Maro (31 miles), and breathtakingly unspoilt Cala Doncella Cove (35 miles).

Adrenaline seekers embarking on longer stays at IGY Málaga Marina are particularly well catered for. Within a 90 minute drive, you can ski at Sierra Nevada while in the other direction, Tarifa offers world-class kite surfing. The area also boasts over 40 golf courses within 45 minutes’ drive of the marina, and horse riding in nearby coastal and mountain locations is also widely available.

For those seeking out more sybaritic pleasures, Málaga is known as a lively cultural hub. This is thanks, in no small part, to the city’s ambitious mayor, who has successfully overseen huge redevelopment and infrastructure work in the last decade to transform Málaga into a welcoming city buzzing with tourist attractions, music, local traditions and arts.

A Pompidou sits in the middle of the two piers while the Museo Picasso, Thyssen, CAC modern art museum and Ifergan, housing the most important private archaeological collection in the world, will please the most passionate art lovers.

Gastronomy and nightlife in Málaga

IGY Málaga Marina also raises the bar when it comes to its burgeoning restaurant scene. Fine dining establishments in Muelle Uno (Pier 1) include Michelin-starred José Carlos Garcia’s Restaurant JCG and Marisqueria Godoy, offering exquisite seafood and meat dishes, while Gorky, Toro and Casa Carmen offer divine traditional tapas.

So what better way to start the weekend than with your yacht moored in the heart of the city as you enjoy a sunset cocktail at apéro hour before heading off to experience the best Malaga’s legendary late nightlife can offer?

Malaga Marina 1200x630 2

"Many amazing restaurants and shops want to open in the area because they realise they will have the clientele for their market," adds Alejandra. "In the city, we already have lots of fabulous places to eat as well as many bars. After dinner, you can go for a cocktail before heading to one of the many roof terrace loft style bars where you can admire the beautiful views of the cathedral, the Roman Theatre, the old fortress and, of course, the sea."

"Málaga’s nightlife is well known for being lively and sophisticated – people love to dress up and really enjoy the nights and the ambience here. There are live concerts in many restaurants and bars, and you’ll find everything from 80s disco to modern Flamenco."

As an area renowned for fine dining, amazing local ingredients and fabulous wine production, it’s quite simply a gastronomic dream. Visit the vineyards of Bodegas Excelencia, enjoying a wine tasting and food pairing lunch in an idyllic setting before watching vibrant Flamenco performances in colourful traditional costume or perhaps taking in an exciting evening horse race on the beaches of Sanlúcar de Barrameda on the Cádiz coast as the sun sets over the sea.

Highlights not to be missed

Alejandra advises visitors to start their voyage of discovery at the Picasso Museum, admiring the works and surroundings of the most famous painter in town before enjoying a drink at the museum café. After exploring charming Calle Molina Lario and the beautiful cathedral, perhaps wander to the Plaza Poeta Alfonso Canales where you can order a cocktail and watch the sunset from an elegant rooftop bar.

Just 15 mins by car, McArthurGlen designer outlet will keep ardent shoppers happy, offering great deals on labels including Prada, Armani, Zegna, Karl Lagerfeld, Escada and La Furla.

Malaga Marina 1200x630 3

The Mercado Central is a great place to stop for provisions on your way back to the marina after relishing in the beautiful murals and street art, interspersed with art galleries, the CAC Museum and gastropubs galore in the Soho neighbourhood. One of Málaga’s most famous sons, Hollywood film star Antonio Banderas, is the artistic director of the Teatro del Soho.

Make time also to get up close to the Alcazaba, which was built on a hillside in the 11th century by the Moors to protect the city and offers stunning views of the coastline. The Roman Theatre and Gibralfaro Castle are also worthwhile stop offs as you admire neighbourhoods and buildings dating back to the last millennia before trying out the authentic Arabic Baths where you can enjoy a wonderful spa experience.

Equally impressive is a journey to the natural monument of El Torcal de Antequera, just 30 miles from the marina, where you can embark on an adventurous and jaw-dropping hike in one of the world’s most unusual areas of rock formation.

Finally, Parque de Málaga will blow you away with a plethora of stunning sculptures, fountains, banana trees and a landscape that lines the pathways near the shore. "Our location is further away from the middle of the Mediterranean, which is where many charterers head," adds Alejandra. "However we are hoping to attract long term and technical visitors as well as culture vultures who are looking to enjoy the wide variety of music and art here."

Good start to the year for megayacht marina in Spain’s Malaga

yacht malaga marina

THE Malaga megayacht marina has started 2023 with a good forecast of berths.

Since its inauguration last July, the flow of private pleasure boats sailing into Malaga Port to dock at the new megayacht marina in the city has started to gain momentum.

The IGY Málaga Marina, a dedicated superyacht marina that boasts 33 berths for superyachts between 20 and 180 meters, has been home for several months to three boats of 20, 21 and 35 metres respectively.

Then, arriving last December, the 44m superyacht Checkmate, built by Benetti, began a wintering period in the waters of the marina that will last several months.

In addition to these megayachts, 2023 has seen the arrival to the IGY Málaga Marina of the two-masted sailing ship Audrey II; a classic built in Holland in 1997. Another impressive luxury sail yacht which is scheduled to stay in Malaga waters for an extended period of time.

Completing the list of yachts making their winter stopovers in the waters of the Malaga marina, is the Vava II, which, at 96 meters in length, is the longest private pleasure boat to visit the marina so far this year.

The Vava II has a planned stay of one month, and will undergo a series of maintenance works.

Additionally, another four 40-metre yachts are expected to arrive to the new megayacht marina shortly, two of which to carry out repair work, whilst the other two are scheduled to stay for several months.

The Malaga megayacht marina offers a high-power electricity supply to moored craft so the boats’ generators can be turned off during their stay, making savings in polluting emissions into the air.

Malaga marina for megayachts reaches cruising speed

This month at least three large super-luxury yachts will be docked at the port's muelle uno, making temporary or winter stopovers.

To use a seafaring term, you could say that the Malaga's megayacht marina is starting to pick up cruising speed.

Since last week, and at least until the end of the month, a minimum of three large super-luxury craft will be calling or wintering at quay one (Muelle Uno). And there may be more, as negotiations are still under way with other boat owners to bring their vessels to the city during their current winter cycles, when they are preparing for the routes they will make during the high season.

The refurbished harbour area between quays one and two was designed to receive large boats such as this and provide them with the necessary services during low season, such as high-power electrical connections.

The second to arrive, on 7 March, has been a frequent visitor to Malaga marina for at least a decade. The Lady Moura is scheduled to stay for several weeks. It is owned by Nasser Al Rasheed, a Saudi magnate, who has one of the largest private fortunes on the planet. He heads the engineering consultancy Rasheed Engineering and is also an advisor to the Saudi royal family.

With a length of 105 metres and a beam of 20 metres, it is considered one of the most luxurious yachts in the world due to its profusion of exotic details. The first of these is its transom name board and coat of arms, which is made of pure gold. Its facilities include a spa, casino, party room, several lounges, an operating theatre, a heliport and several pleasure boats. It can accommodate up to 30 passengers and has twice as many crew. The ship was designed by Italian architect Luigi Sturchio and was built at the prestigious German shipyard Blohm+Voss in 1990, since when it has been refurbished twice. It is powered by 6,900-horsepower diesel engines, so it can reach a maximum speed of 20 knots (37.04k/h).

Since its construction in 1997, in the German Lürssen shipyard, the Limitless has been a regular visitor to the island of Mallorca, but it had never stopped in Malaga, until now. Painted in navy blue and white, it has three decks, a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure. It has capacity for a dozen guests and 20 crew. Powered by a hybrid diesel-electric engine, it can reach a cruising speed of 17 knots (31.4k/h), and up to 25 knots (46.3k/h) at top speed.

Limitless's arrival is thanks to a new collaboration with Caribbean ports. Malagaport, which operates under the Port Authority, together with operator IGY, have recently worked with the marina of Isle De Sol, on the island of Saint-Martin, which is some 240km east of Puerto Rico and is divided between France and the Netherlands. Thanks to these negotiations, the Limitless has come to the Costa del Sol for the first time on a technical stopover. It has plans to stay for at least several weeks.

The hottest averages are in the summer with 28°C in July and August however, it’s still warm enough to swim in the winter! That’s right, Malaga is warm and sunny year-round and if you want to avoid crowds we recommend visiting in May or September. It will be slightly cooler at around 23°C, but you can still go for a swim and you’ll get better deals on Malaga yacht rentals.

What can I see and do while on a yacht charter in Malaga?

There’s a reason that Malaga is one of Spain’s most sought-after sailing destinations—and that’s because there’s so much to see and do! Whether you want a lazy beach day or a cultural excursion, you’ll find what you’re looking for in this spectacular city. Here are some of our favourite activities to add to your Malaga sailing itinerary.

  • Visit the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castles: These two ancient fortresses sit atop a hill overlooking Malaga city and offer stunning views of the surrounding area. The Alcazaba was built by the Moorish rulers of Spain in the 11th century, while the Gibralfaro was added later on by the Christian king, Alfonso XI. Visitors can explore the remains of both castles, including their extensive gardens and ramparts.
  • Stroll around El Palo: This traditional fishing village is located just east of Malaga city and makes for a pleasant day trip. Wander around the village's narrow streets, stop for some seafood at one of its many restaurants and enjoy views of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Sail to Isla de Graciosa: Just off the coast of Malaga is Isla de Graciosa, a small island that makes for a great day trip. While on the island you can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of its sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
  • Visit La Concepción botanical gardens: Located just outside of Malaga city centre, these gardens are home to over 5,000 species of plants and flowers from all over the world.
  • Explore Malaga's Old Town: The Old Town is one of the best places to see in Malaga if you're interested in its history and culture. Walk around its winding streets, visit its museums and churches and soak up views of its beautiful architecture.
  • Take a day trip: Head to nearby destinations like Granada, Seville and Ronda. If you have time, you can even visit Gilbraltar!
  • Soak up the sun on one of Malaga’s beaches: Playa de la Malagueta is a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming, while El Palo is ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Other iconic beaches include Playa de los Locos, El Chorro and La Barrosa.
  • Go scuba diving: Try your luck at El Chorrillo de Marbella. This incredible dive spot is full of vibrant colours from the surrounding coral reef and is home to an abundance of unique species such as moray eels, cuttlefish, crabs and barracudas. For more experienced divers, head over to Cala de Mijas and explore its many underwater caves and tunnels. This spectacular spot offers a great opportunity to observe all kinds of marine life up close, including sea bass, moray eels, octopus and much more. You'll even find some amazing wrecks from World War II!

Should I have a skipper on board my private yacht rental in Malaga?

Our large fleet of yacht rentals in Malaga includes both skippered vessels as well as those without a skipper, so you can find the perfect one for your boat trip. Even if you have a licence to sail we always recommend a skippered vessel for a more relaxing and worry-free holiday. Skippers will handle all of the logistics like docking, anchoring and sailing the vessel so you can spend more time with the ones that you love. The best part about having a skipper present is the fact that they are usually locals, so they can give you recommendations and help you see everything on your travel itinerary, and more.

So, what are you waiting for? Sail in the capable hands of a skipper and allow them to be your private tour guide around Malaga.

What type of boat should I choose for my Malaga yacht rental?

While browsing the Scansail website, you might be wondering which type of boat you should choose for your yacht rental in Malaga, and the answer to this will depend on the amount of time you plan to be out on the water. For a shorter holiday of less than a week, you shouldn’t need more than a RIB or a motorboat, which are usually chartered by the day. A longer holiday of a week or more will require more amenities and accommodations, such as a kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms. Catamarans and yachts are spacious vessels usually rented by the week, perfect for a longer holiday with family and friends. For people who like sailing for sport, we’d recommend a sailboat. If you’re a novice sailor but still want an authentic sailing experience, a skippered sailboat is a fantastic option.

Find the perfect vessel for your sailing trip in Malaga with Scansail, and have the holiday of a lifetime.
