Have the tower rooms been remodeled if so where are they located?

They have not been remodeled. We just stayed there earlier this week. They are in the Tower which is about the center of the resort. All the other buildings are only 2 stories while the Tower is 12, I believe.

Is this an all inclusive hotel?

The 5 star review is for the WAY THEY HANDLED THINGS, which was AWESOME, not necessarily for the resort and rooms, etc. As some have mentioned, it is a little dated in the rooms, but not too bad in our opinion, as the location right on the water makes up for it. I'm assuming they will be updating it all in the near future.... We were here for just 3 days; for my daughter and I to spread my mom's ashes, and for my daughter who has been sick for 3 yrs, to be able to see some good friends. Our first room had a few problems, like a broken shower arm/head, and very loud road noise. When we contacted the front desk the next morning, we were lucky enough to get Angie, who was wonderful. She was kind and understanding, and put us into a much nicer room (and surprisingly quiet for being next to the walking/biking/skating path) right on the water for the same price :) I wish we could have stayed there longer, as it had a large, private, lushly landscaped patio with dining table, tiki torches, lounge chairs and fire pit, and all fenced in for privacy and security, but you could still see the beach and water, and enjoy watching the people going by. Outside of this fenced "backyard" there were 2 other patios with lounge chairs and tables that were also for the room. There was great communication, and no stress, which we really appreciated. We would definitely stay here again, as we never had a single person who wasn't nice to us, AND as a cool bonus, the resort has at least 6 rare, tropical birds (parrots, and others) who are in a big cage in the middle of their lushly landscaped center area that put on a show with a trainer who they must hire to do that. It was fun to watch, and there are beautiful ponds in that area as well, filled with huge Koi and ducks, so that was peaceful and fun to to just relax and watch. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, and appreciate VERY MUCH the kindness shown to us from Angie and her team. Thank you again so very much!

My previous yelp review caused some discomfort, they had to remove it. -5 out of 10.

For now I would rate this a 3-4 We originally wanted a ada room since we are a family filed with handicaps It was not easy for my son but he managed First thing that happened was our carpet was soaked from the fridge being turned off not fun getting pairs of socks u just slapped on wet and soaked. Dead Fruit flies in the freezer, side of the bathroom was not cleaned, handle on the dresser broke off, handle for the tub was hard to turn on and to turn in back off without dripping, phone was broken But honestly it is what it is. I think the location is great. All the tiny things can be easily fixed on my own and for the other things resort handled everything professionally Our children enjoyed everything Yes it's outdated but it reminded me of hotels From my home town. Food is awesome! I've never ate so much carbs lol The rosemary bread is to die for As I write this review. Im still a guest until next week Staff is very accommodating This is a reminder that nothing is perfect and sometimes ppl make the best memories When things go sideways Removed 1 star for here me out The hotel does not come with a water extractor machine for wet suits would have been great in the locker room pool side Picture will be posted later and a new review to add on will also be revised

Dear Jacquelyn, thank you for staying with us. We apologize for the wet carpet and fruit flies. It's gratifying to know that you had a great experience with our staff and you enjoyed our tasty cuisine. We hope you return soon for another amazing vacation.

Barely a 2-star experience that I'm typing this from my room. customer service is nonexistent. Every staff member we encountered couldn't care less about our stay. Hard to believe we paid over $600 per night for this mess. Despite multiple in-person requests for basic housekeeping, our room was never cleaned. We informed the front desk staff (at least five of them), who assured us multiple times that someone would take care of it, but nothing happened. When we returned to our unmade room with no towels for the third time and called the front desk again, we were met with attitude and told there was no one available to help. And well, our "king suite" is just an average hotel room. Will never come back here.

Dear Ashley, thank you for your stay and feedback. Our goal is to ensure our guests have an enjoyable visit and we apologize for falling short of that. Your feedback has been communicated to our management and housekeeping teams as we strive to enhance our services. Beautiful hotel. It's on the older side, but they have renovated most of the rooms. The tower rooms aren't renovated yet. We stayed at the garden view 2 queens room. Although I wish we had a bay view room, our room did not disappoint. We had a view of the Koi ponds and you can see them swimming from our balcony. The grounds are decorated with lots of tropical plants and trees. They have parrots who talk that entertained my kids. The beach is walking distance from our room. Very cool! Over all I'd stay again and try to take advantage of the amenities! Why the 4 stars and not five? Spider webs all over the place!! Dead bugs on spider webs just hanging around the hall ways and the balcony. The free coffee in the rooms sucks! The wanna be kuerig did the job but it still sucked! lol for the price you pay, I'd wish it was decent coffee.

My husband and I were in San Diego for our baby moon and a spa day was definitely a MUST for us (more so for me but hey, he reaps the benefits). We both got a massage (prenatal massage for me) and a facial - both were about 50 mins long for each service. We hung out in their lounge in between services and that provided great ambiance for relaxation. The locker rooms were great and had all the essentials that you'll need after your spa day, including access to their sauna! At the end of our facial service, our esthetician even provided a 'skin prescription' for us based on our skincare needs so that was really cool. Only reason why I'm giving 4 stars and not 5 stars is due to the booking system because it was super confusing. While I did get an email and phone call confirmation, I didn't realize that I had booked the facials for the both of us at a later time during the day and not right after our massages (we received our massages first and then facials) for it to be back to back. The receptionist was very nice and explained to us that there was only one esthetician on site at that time so that was the only way for them to accommodate us. We were going to cancel the facials but then ended up not doing so because they were going to charge for the service regardless if we received it or not so we decided to stay at the resort until our facial services, which were about 3 hours apart after the conclusion of our massage services. Otherwise, we had a very relaxing day at this spa location!

May 30, 2024

Dear guest, thank you for sharing the details of your experience. We are sorry about the confusion and any inconvenience you may have experienced. We're glad it all ended well and you enjoyed your day at our spa. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Fantastic stay! Before visiting customer service was super helpful over the phone and took down our requests. We booked a pool side room. Although it didn't come with a microwave. I made a request before hand and luckily we were able to get one in our room without an additional charge. Upon arrival the person at the desk Randy was super helpful. Gave us a rundown of everything, told us where to park etc . Room was clean and they brought in our crib and microwave before we got into the room. Our stay was amazing , scenery was so beautiful. Kids loved the hotel cat, ponds, and birds . The pool was so fun. We had a blast at the arcade as well ! Loved that this hotel including clean pool towels for convenience. Next to the pool was daily kid crafts . We made cute keepsakes while we were there ! The kids also were able to do the movie on the bay and ice cream social on Wednesday! We had a scavenger hunt given to us by the front desk and afterwards the kids turned it in to the Java cafe for a baked treat. Gift shop was REASONABLY PRICED ! Which is something I never thought I'd say! My kids were able to pick out some goodies under $10! ( bracelets , necklaces , notebooks) We ordered room service a few nights and the food was INCREDIBLE! The portions were HUGE. The kids meals could easily feed an adult and came with a scoop of ice cream ! Win win Restaurants are within walking distance. We tried world famous. The food was incredible, great portions and had a view. Beach was fun and clean . We did yoga on the beach in the am (8:30) and it was just so beautiful and the ladies we had instructing us were amazing ! Also kid friendly. Afterwards checking out was an absolute breeze and zero hidden fees were found once checking out ! 1)One thing I will say is poolside can be loud, however didn't bother any my kids including a baby sleeping . The curfew at 10pm was always enforced which made things perfect. 2) no top latch on the hotel doors. Also wasn't a huge problem for us . 3) make sure to ask for utensils and condiments when ordering room service . One night they were slammed and I ran down for some. Again totally understandable

This hotel is awful - children screaming and crying, no room cleaning or room service over our 4 day stay, no late checkout, WORST HOTEL BEDS EVER AND BED BUGS!!!!!!!!! pillows are not pillows they are completely flat we had to walk a mile to and from the front desk constantly it was the most unrelaxing and inconvenient vacation i have ever had and they should be providing me some sort of refund.... my car is more comfy than this hotel... also the water pressure in the shower is non existent and the soap is orange scented so if you want to stay here you have been warned... worst experience ever

Photo of John L.

Rooms are still very dated but it's about on par with what you can get for Mission Bay Area. The amenities though are awesome. Always a fun stay with lots to do. Plus the pool is awesome. So recommended depending on what your priorities are.

Pros. The quiet room overlooking the garden. Large plastic trash bag. Good wifi. Close to Bay and Ocean.

Cons. One of our neighbors talked loudly on her phone about 3 am, with her voice carrying into the garden. We closed our patio door and it was okay.

On the northwest shore of Mission Bay, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa attracts visitors looking for a bit of R&R. The property is visibly older than other modern luxury accommodations in the San Diego area. However, each of the guest rooms features a plasma TV and an iPod docking station. Still, some guests can't help but remark that the rooms need an upgrade. But the on-site amenities are better received, with travelers praising the Catamaran Spa for its soothing ambiance and its long list of treatments. Recent guests also commend the hotel staff members for their friendly nature and eagerness to help out. And for many, the resort's Sunday Champagne Brunch was a highlight of their visit. The property charges a $34 resort fee, which covers amenities like hotel-wide Wi-Fi access, in-room water and towel service.

We stayed in their Bayfront Suite while visiting which I highly recommend to anyone interested in booking a stay!  From our front door we could see (and loudly hear) the lobby’s waterfall.  I would open the door often just to hear the sound of the soothing water.

From the back-door we were right along Mission Bay.  During the evening’s luau we literally got to watch and appreciate the show right from our hotel room!

Travels with Greg

catamaran resort spa

By Greg ARAGON

My 6-year-old son has never left California. So when he said the Catamaran Resort and Spa ( www.catamaranresort.com ) in San Diego is more fun than Hawaii, I took it with a grain of salt.

But then I started thinking. He has a good point. The tropical island-inspired Catamaran has everything a kid and his family love. It offers a big, beautiful swimming pool, a sandy beach, spacious rooms and suites, bike rentals, a video arcade, an onsite restaurant and lots of opportunities to make new friends.

Our getaway to the Catamaran Resort began recently when we checked into a gorgeous bay front suite overlooking San Diego’s stunning Mission Bay. Spanning 438 square feet, the room was highlighted by a large patio that is literally steps from the sandy beach.

catamaran resort spa

The suite also boasted a big private bedroom with two queen beds and a large TV, a separate living area with another big TV, a pullout sofa, a wet bar with a refrigerator and a dining area. A large and spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower completed the room’s layout.

Beyond the suite, the rest of the property is just as impressive. Featuring 310 rooms, the sprawling Polynesian-themed resort is surrounded by palm trees, waterfalls, koi ponds, exotic birds and lush vegetation.

catamaran resort spa

The hotel is located in San Diego’s Pacific Beach community and sits on the shores of Mission Bay, a large, artificial saltwater bay created for recreational activities such as wakeboarding, jet skiing, sailing, camping, cycling, jogging, roller skating, skateboarding and sunbathing.

One of my family’s favorite spots at the resort was Mission Bay’s sandy beach located steps from our patio. Here the kids made sand castles and played in the water while we relaxed in lawn chairs, soaking rays and admiring the coastline.

The beach was also where we rented a 21-ft Hurricane powerboat and cruised around the bay for a fun-filled hour. We rented the boat from Action Sports Rentals ( www.actionsportrentals.com/catamaran-resort-hotel-spa/ ), which has a booth on the dock in front of the Catamaran Resort.

It was an epic voyage. After learning how to control the vessel and finding the proper speed for the bay, we cruised into the morning sun. Along the way we waved to boaters and paddle boarders, sailed beneath an old bridge and past expensive condos and luxury hotels. The boat was easy to maneuver, had lots of seating and shade and was a perfect family outing for the afternoon.

catamaran resort spa

After mooring the boat, we went to the resort’s large pool area where my kids played in the water and made new friends. Secluded behind tall palm trees, the pool is a tropical oasis with lots of seating, a Jacuzzi and a bar. Each day, the pool area offered a free kids’ program for hotel guests.

Next to the pool is also a video arcade, full of free games for kids and their parents. My son and I had a great time there, shooting basketballs, racing cars and playing foosball.

catamaran resort spa

From the pool, we walked along a lush, tropical path to Oceana Coastal Kitchen, the resort’s on-site signature restaurant. Boasting beachfront dining with spectacular views of Mission Bay, Oceana serves creative, coastal California dishes with an eclectic flare. The restaurant, led by executive chef Paul Arias, won Tripadvisor’s 2023 Travelers’ Choice “Best of the Best” Restaurants for Everyday Eats, ranking 10 th best in the U.S.

Our dinner at Oceana began with a delicious bowl of New England style clam chowder with bacon, red bliss potato, thyme, cream and steamed little neck clams on top and mixed in. I am a major chowder fan and this bowl had the perfect amount of creaminess along with a perfect clam to potato ratio, making it one of the best I’ve had.

catamaran resort spa

The restaurant also specializes in sushi and when we sampled the Oceana House Roll we fell in love. The rolls are exquisitely filled with eel, tempura shrimp, crab, Nori, avocado and unagi sauce. This dish is a work of culinary art.

We completed our dinner at Oceana with a succulent grilled prime hanger steak with smoked potato puree, watercress, cippolini and macadamia chimichurri; and  a tasty Hawaiian style pad Thai with stir fried vegetables, tofu, pineapple, chili, macadamia nuts, cilantro and soy.

After dinner we strolled along the beach and watched the sun fall into Mission Bay.

The next morning we had potatoes and eggs, and a plate of chilaquiles for breakfast at Oceana, and then rented a surrey bike from Action Sports Rentals. We then pedaled around the bay. Along the way we saw sailboarders fling over waves and then stopped at a park for the kids to play.

catamaran resort spa

Back at the resort we watched a demonstration featuring the hotel’s exotic parrots including vibrant macaws, beautiful cockatoos and a lilac-crowned amazon. Some of the birds talk and can say things like “hi,” “hello” and “goodbye.” The parrots are available to view outside daily between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Pacific time, depending on the weather.

We concluded the day at the resort’s Sunset Luau. Held on the shores of Mission Bay, the luaus are a festive celebration of Polynesian food, music and dances perfect for family and friends. The party begins with a lei with real flowers and a delicious Mai Tai. This was followed by an all-you-can-eat buffet with Hawaiian-inspired rice and salads and various succulent meats including pork, chicken and fish.

catamaran resort spa

Local luau group Pride of Polynesia provided authentic island music and dance featuring hula and fiery torch dancers. Kids also got a chance to hula dance and participate in activities at the Kids Corner where they made flowered leis, festive crafts, colored and played with stick-on tattoos.

Catamaran Resort and Spa is located at 3999 Mission Blvd. in San Diego CA 92109. For more information and reservations call (858) 488-1081 or visit www.catamaranresort.com .

sunset luau catamaran resort san diego

Sunset Luaus at Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa

Known as San Diego’s tropical hideaway with luxurious accommodations, it’s no surprise that Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa knows how to throw a summer party up to royal standards. The Sunset Luaus on the Bay have remained a summer tradition every year, hosting events every Tuesday and Friday evening through September.

For more than two centuries, Hawaiians and Polynesian people have been celebrating a major societal change thanks to King Kamehameha II’s ruling that allowed men and women to eat together. This cultural culmination is known as the luau.

Upon arrival at Sunset Luaus on the Bay, attendees walk through the Polynesian-themed lodge of Catamaran Resort Hotel before landing at the luau venue overlooking the iconic Mission Bay . Guests are not only welcomed with leis placed around their necks, but also Mai Tai cocktails, a staple concoction.

Between the live music and signature drinks, guests get to know their fellow table mates. Whether they’re seated with longtime friends or acquaintances they just met, it’s the start of an evening where everyone becomes family.

sunset luau catamaran resort san diego1

On stage, the host walks attendees through the ceremony of the evening. The Kalua roast pig is introduced first, as the delicacy has been cooking underground for hours in preparation of the feast. Guests are then released to indulge in the impressive all-you-can-eat display of luau dishes. From spicy bay shrimp and Huli Huli chicken to shoyu jasmine fried rice and traditional macaroni salad, there’s something for everyone (and plenty of it).

The feast isn’t all that guests have to revel in throughout the night. As the sun begins to wane, the Pride of Polynesia, a San Diego-based dance revue group, immerses guests in an authentic luau experience. Through performances from Hawaii, French Polynesia (Tahiti), Samoa and New Zealand, the entertainers not only story tell each island’s culture, but also create immersive experiences for those looking to participate on stage.

To close out the evening, the Pride of Polynesia delivers one final show-stopping performance: Polynesian fire dancing.

Sunset Luaus on the Bay are every Tuesday and Friday evening until Sept. 1 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (doors open for VIP at 5:30 p.m.). Tickets start at $110 for adults and $60 for children (up to age 12). For more information about Sunset Luaus at Catamaran Resort, visit www.catamaranresort.com/sunset-luaus .

Billionaire Larry Ellison, among world’s richest people, has bought a Florida resort

Ellison is said to have paid millions for the oceanfront resort. the oracle software mogul also bought the biggest residential estate in manalapan and owns most of a hawaiian island, his primary home..

Portrait of Darrell Hofheinz

Billionaire Larry Ellison, who in April 2024 was ranked by Forbes as the world’s fifth richest person, a few months later paid at least $277.34 million for the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa in Manalapan, the wealthy Florida town south of Palm Beach , according to the deed recorded Aug. 13 and statement released by the resort.

The price Ellison paid for the oceanfront hotel was undisclosed when the resort announced the sale on Aug. 8.

Ellison, who co-founded software mammoth Oracle, was already familiar with Manalapan. In June 2022, he dropped $173 million of his fortune to buy an ocean-to-lake compound in the same town. That transaction was the largest residential sale ever in Florida.

So who is Larry Ellison? Here’s a quick look at the billionaire.

How rich is Larry Ellison?

On Aug. 8, 2024, the day the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa announced the sale to Ellison, Forbes estimated the 79-year-old’s net worth at $159.7 billion.  The next day, Forbes' real-time ranking increased his wealth to $162.9 billion.

How did Larry Ellison get his fortune?

Ellison co-founded Oracle Corp. with two partners in Santa Clara, California, in 1977. Today, the software powerhouse bills itself as the world’s largest database-management company. Ellison spent 37 years as CEO and still holds the titles of chairman and chief technology officer at the company. His ownership stake in the company is reportedly 42 percent.

In April 2024, Ellison announced he was moving Oracle’s headquarters from Austin, Texas, to Nashville, Tennessee.

In a June 2024 earnings call, one of Ellison's focuses was Oracle’s construction of data centers to accommodate the increasing demand for generative artificial intelligence. “We are literally building the smallest, most portable, most affordable cloud data centers all the way up to 200-megawatt data centers, ideal for training very large language models and keeping them up-to-date,” Ellison said during the call.

What about Larry Ellison’s Tesla ties?

Among Ellison’s most well-publicized stock purchases, he invested heavily in his billionaire friend Elon Musk’s Tesla and joined the company’s board in 2018. Ellison stepped off the board in August 2022 but still owns about 15 million shares in the electric carmaker, according to Forbes.

Did Larry Ellison go to college?

Yes, but he didn’t graduate. He dropped out of the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, according to Bloomberg and other published reports.

Where’s Larry Ellison from and where does he live?

A native New Yorker from The Bronx, Ellison has lived in the Chicago area and California. But he has said his primary home is on the island of Lanai in Hawaii . He reportedly paid $300 million for almost all of that island 10 years ago. He has also bought homes in Newport, Rhode Island; and California. He has been divorced four times.

What about Larry Ellison’s property in Palm Beach County, Florida?

Ellison's ownership entity bought his Manalapan estate — and part of nearby Bird Island in the Intracoastal Waterway — in June 2022 from a trust controlled by a fellow software billionaire, Jim Clark. In all, the estate and its island measure more than 22 acres.

The property straddles both sides of South Ocean Boulevard, with a tunnel beneath the roadway connecting the larger oceanfront parcel with the one that fronts the Intracoastal Waterway.

The residential purchase in Manalapan followed another one in Palm Beach County. In April 2021, a company linked to Ellison is paid a recorded $80 million for an oceanfront estate on 6½ acres in the Seminole Landing community  near North Palm Beach. That estate is about 27 miles away from the property Manalapan estate.

What are Larry Ellison’s plans for the resort hotel he bought in Florida?

Ellison plans to make improvements to the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, according to the August 2024 statement announcing his purchase . But the statement did not provide any specifics.

One of several hospitality properties in Ellison's real estate portfolio, the 8-acre Palm resort and hotel at 100 S. Ocean Blvd. features seaside swimming pools, a 42,000-square-foot spa, 32,000 square feet of meeting space and several restaurants. Eau Palm Beach has consistently earned high ratings from travel magazines and hospitality organizations.

Ellison bought the Mediterranean-style, 300-plus room resort from the London-based Lewis Trust Group, which had owned the property since 2003. When the Lewis family bought the resort, it was a Ritz Carlton branded property but that relationship ended in 2013.

In addition to co-founding Oracle, Ellison has been involved in a variety of luxury hospitality ventures. His portfolio includes the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, Sensei Lanai, Nobu Ryokan Malibu, Nobu Hotel Palo Alto, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, and Sensei Porcupine Creek.

What about Larry Ellison’s politics?

On May 20, 2022, The Washington Post and other outlets reported that Ellison, who has supported conservative Republican causes, took part in a call on Nov. 14, 2020, with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and others “that focused on strategies for contesting the legitimacy of the vote” in the Nov. 3, 2020, presidential elections won by President Joe Biden against former President Donald Trump. The Post cited court documents and “a participant” as sources. The call, the Post reported, is “the first known example of a technology industry titan joining powerful figures in conservative politics, media and law to strategize about Trump’s post-loss options.” Others on the call included Fox News host Sean Hannity, Trump attorney Jay Sekulow and attorney James Bopp Jr., who represented True the Vote, a nonprofit group that that has “promoted disputed claims of widespread voter fraud,” according to the Post. Ellison and Oracle did not respond to the Post for a request for comment, the Post reported at the time.

But as of mid-April 2024, Ellison had not made single donation to Trump's 2024 campaign, CNBC reported.

What does Larry Ellison like to do in his spare time?

He races sailboats, flies planes, and plays tennis and guitar, according to a brief biographical sketch on the Oracle website. He also has owned number of yachts, including Musashi, a 2011 Feadship superyacht measuring 288 feet in length and accommodating 18 passengers.

What are Larry Ellison's charitable efforts?

Among his philanthropic initiatives, he gave $200 million to fund cancer-treatment research at the University of Southern California in 2016. The Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine in Los Angles is named for him.

Sunrises and sunsets in Santorini: The new Sandblu resort reviewed

Sunrises and sunsets in Santorini: The new Sandblu resort reviewed

As Santorini's latest independent luxury resort opens its doors, Ped Millichamp checks out the island’s sparkling new Sandblu hotel to give it his greek seal of approval

Part of the Cyclades islands in the southern area of the Aegean Sea, the volcanic island of Santorini is renowned for its whitewashed buildings, blue-domed churches and stunning sunsets. Formed from a volcanic eruption, its dramatic cliffs encircle a breathtaking caldera filled with azure waters. You’ll find the newly opened SandBlu resort seamlessly built into the foot of the ancient Mesa Vuono mountain in Kamari, on the south east coast with elevated panoramic sea views and its famous black sand beach just minutes away. Direct flights into the island’s small airport will have you sipping on a Grecian cocktail within four hours of leaving London. What are you waiting for? Yammas!

The white stoned complex boasts 27 rooms, 22 suites and 2 villas that gently cascade down from the mountainside which are all elegantly designed with the true essence of Greece in mind. The epitome of luxury in every detail and the most sophisticated hotel of Santorini by far. The islands’ radiant sunshine naturally lights up every living space giving a sense of tranquillity and calm. Each room has all the amenities you could wish for including air con, wifi, mini-bar and a fully-equipped en suite bathroom.

Whichever you choose, you’ll take comfort in the opulence that surrounds you, along with the elevated views and privacy that the architecture of the complex creates - so much so, I dared to skinny-dip in our pool each morning. I especially enjoyed the garden areas giving life to pomegranate trees and the landscaping of the green roof gardens.

Our first evening was spent in the hotels main restaurant, Apnea, which translates to ‘breathless’ and the al fresco views of the Aegean sea as you tuck into the modern Greek cuisine certainly take your breath away. Local fresh seafood dishes are the head chefs speciality and we enjoyed fresh Cretan cherry tomatoes with carob rusks and sea fennel, grilled Scorpion Fish with kakkavia sauce and fennel, milk-fed lamb with fermented grains, eggplant and grape leaf, all washed down with a local cocktail created by the restaurants’ mixologist. Breakfast and lunch is served in their other restaurant Plateia which is nestled into the heart of the complex with a sunkist terrace and poolside dining tables. Start your day with traditional Greek dishes such as milk pie or strapatsada (scrambled eggs combined with a rich tomato sauce and salty feta) or my favourite - the Greek pancakes (the head chef Theodore’s grandmother’s recipe – delicious) ... all washed down with a Greek coffee and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. For lunch, we opted for a meze of Octopus with wild greens,  Greek salad and the classic Charcoal Beef Soutzoukaki but the star of the show was the Garides Koiladas – intensely red king prawns fished at a depth of 300 metres in the Valley of Ermionida – a very sought after delicacy and an absolute must if you love your seafood. The majority of the staff are of Greek origin and service was warm and natural. Being an independent hotel, it benefits from not having ‘over-trained’ staff.

You’ll also find an artisanal bakery onsite serving sandwiches, pastries, fruit tarts, tea and smoothies for a more relaxed and informal refuelling. We took our pastries and juices to the central chill out area to soak up the sun whilst devouring them. And finally, onto Aroma the charming onsite wine bar which features a curated collection of local and international wines. Paired with local cheese platter or Greek tapas. Divine. Like your ‘κρασί’? (greek for wine – you’ll need this word in your vocabulary), book their wine tasting class for an elevated experience.

catamaran resort spa

If you’re looking to unwind and slip into a world of tranquillity, head straight to the resorts Aurora Spa and treat yourself to a choice of massages, facials or body treatments. We opted for a couples massage which was 80 minutes of pure relaxation and rejuvenation whilst being soothingly kneaded by their expert masseuses who took in our specific areas of need. The spa also boasts an indoor pool with soothing sea views, a sauna, steam room and rain showers. Feeling more energetic? Make full use of the fitness centre and training classes on offer. Maybe next time for me…

The complex also boasts two pools – the main ‘Blu’ infinity pool situated in front of Plateia so you can dip in and out between snacks whilst soaking in the sea views. The pool also has a separate area for kids making it an ideal hangout spot for families. If you’re in need of some child-free time, book them into ‘Bala’ the onsite kids’ club that combines the history of Greece with playtime. Educational fun! On the lower level you’ll discover ‘Aqua’ where you can laze around in the loungers and enjoy the resident DJs tunes whilst sipping on a cocktail (or two). You’ll also find several on-site retail shops scattered around so if you’re looking to treat yourself to a fancy holiday pair of shades or summer wear you won’t have to look far. The famous black-sanded beach of Kamari is a few minutes away (or an even shorter hotel buggy ride) which is an idyllic place to sunbathe and swim during the day or enjoy the lively evening tavernas at night. Sandblu offers its own private sunbed area away from the others with waiter service from Hook Bar so if you love to lose yourself for a few hours with a good book whilst sunbathing and taking the odd dip into the sea as I do whilst sipping on an ice cold drink and devouring a lamb souvlaki, this beach is the most popular of the island and a must. My only advice would be to wear sand shoes as the black sand gets pretty hot! (my wife chuckled as I did my best impression of a gecko on burning desert sand).

Extracurricular

If you do one thing in Santorini, take the Catamaran sunset cruise around the island to take in the stunning views and learn about the volcanic formation history of the area from the lively boat crew. Our Spiridakos Sailing Cruise took five hours which included Insta-opp views of the Red Beach of Aktotiri, the island’s iconic White Beach and several ‘jump in and snorkel’ moments – including one in the hot springs for a natural spa in the thermal volcanic mud waters - and concluded around 8.30pm as we watched the rather magnificent sunset. A truly magical experience. The trip also included drinks and a barbecue served towards the end. There are several tour operators but ours offered a transfer to and from our hotel making the whole excursion seamless. The boat captain, Leo, and his team really made the day a memorable one and Ibizan tunes played out throughout the trip.

The island is renowned for its guided walks along its dramatic cliffs for the optimal views of the azure waters. Head to the capital Thira for shopping inquaint Greek cobbled streets or Oia for unforgettable sunsets.

Which room?

Choose from rooms, suites or villas (17 of which have their own private pool) all within walking distance to the hotels restaurants, pools and spa. The higher you go, the more stunning the views are. We opted for the sea view suite with a pool to enjoy the early morning sunrises on the private terrace over a Greek coffee. Bliss.

Our trip was as a couple looking to escape our hectic lives for a bit of much needed time out. Families are also well catered for and the hotel’s location makes for an ideal base to explore the rest of the island (the islands’ bus service is well run or order a taxi).

Best Luau in California!

It is the best Luau I have attended in California. It made me feel as if I were actually in Hawaii. The dancers were highly skilled, professional, and beautiful, their whole program was outstanding. The food was abundant. They had a good variety of salads, entrees, and desserts. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole luau, the cost is well worth an evening of good food and great entertainment. I would love to return again next year.

Highly Recommend Private Luau Experience

I coordinated with the Catamaran to host a private luau and buffet for my company. We got a lot of positive feedback about the event from our guests at the end of the night - many of them were hoping we could do it again next year! I would highly recommend the Catamaran's sunset luau for large, private gatherings.

Audience Participation at the Luau!

The musicians were great, and the dancers' costumes were fantastic. The fire dancer was amazing. A very enjoyable evening of food and entertainment. One complimentary Mai Tai and Lei upon entry. The luau experience was worth it. Other folks at our table were returning because they really enjoyed their experience last year. The luau also has audience participation, which is great for young and old.

This property is beautiful

My granddaughter and I enjoyed the waterfall, fish, ducks, and parrots. The pool and hot tub were nice and open at night when we wanted to relax. We did the VIP luau and really enjoyed it. The food was amazing, the real flower leis were gorgeous, and the show was entertaining. We were also treated to a Mai Tai drink in a souvenir cup and a non-alcohol drink in a pineapple cup for my granddaughter. We made some special memories together.
