Mackinac Island among best places in US to see fall leaves from a boat

Mackinac Island, a Michigan tourist gem, is among the top destinations in the country to see the fall foliage from a boat, according to a boating organization.

Discover Boating calls the island a place where you can "enjoy time on your boat in Mackinac’s waters, or take a ferry to the island for a long weekend."

The website suggests visiting Mackinac Island, ranked No. 5 on the list, the first two weeks of October for optimal viewing of fall leaves which is "a little later than the surrounding mainland."

Discover Boating, which touts itself as a one-stop shop for all things boating, compiled the list of affordable options whether you rent, share or belong to a boat club.

Columbia River Gorge, Oregon/Washington

"The Pacific Northwest is spectacular year-round, but in the fall, the plentiful trees light up with color," Discover Boating says. "The Columbia River, which flows between Oregon and Washington, is center stage for foliage displays. The gorge is a canyon up to 4,000 feet deep that extends from the confluence of the Columbia and Deschutes rivers over 80 miles to the west. Peak leaf viewing lasts approximately two weeks between late September and early October."

Lake Tahoe, California

"Lake Tahoe is a busy recreational area throughout the year, with winter skiing and summer boating activities," Discover Boating says. "From September to late October, there’s another reason to vacation here: the myriad colors surrounding this freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Just 40 miles from Reno, Lake Tahoe is easy to access and welcomes everyone to enjoy the show."

Dillion Reservoir, Colorado

"Dillon Reservoir in Summit County, Colorado, is just 45 minutes from downtown Denver, but its Rocky Mountain setting might as well be in another world," Discover Boating says. "The Dillon Yacht Club, founded in 1968, is the nation’s highest sailing club, with an elevation of 9,017 feet above sea level. The marina offers pontoon boats for rent, and the club organizes sailing regattas, including the Frostbite Series in late September. Aspen trees comprise much of the surrounding foliage, so the area brightens with vivid yellows and golds in the fall."

Door County, Wisconsin

"Just an hour from Green Bay, Wisconsin, Door County sits on a peninsula that juts out onto Lake Michigan and lures visitors all summer," Discover Boating says. "But after many of the tourists have left, the 912-acre state park of Rock Island lights up with fiery color. While there, you can also tour wineries and lighthouses and ride the trolley from eatery to eatery. Or, stay aboard your boat and cruise from Green Bay to Lake Michigan, a journey that can take a week or more."

Mackinac Island, Michigan

"Mackinac Island on Lake Huron is best known to boaters because of the Chicago Yacht Club-sponsored race that concludes there," Discover Boating says. "Mackinac is almost entirely a state park where you can hike, visit Fort Mackinac (which dates from 1780), and relax at the luxurious Grand Hotel that draws visitors from afar."

Acadia National Park, Maine

"The Maine coast is a boater’s paradise, but autumn in the 47,000-acre Acadia National Park on Desert Island isn’t to be missed," Discover Boating says. "The coastal color peaks a little later than inland, so you may have more time to catch the brilliant change of birches, oaks, and maples. The entire Bar Harbor region glows with breathtaking hues. For foodies, Portland is the place to dock. Rocky beaches, distant mountain peaks, and plenty of moose, bears, and whales will keep you occupied."

Hudson River Valley, New York

"Gold, crimson and purple colors will welcome you to the Hudson River Valley in New York that combines picture-perfect country roads with fabulous river views," Discover Boating says. "Bird watching is big here with bald eagles, herons and egrets making the nearby marshlands their home. For an unusual treat, you can also visit the West Point Military Academy or rent a kayak and visit the river coves in perfect bliss."

Lake Nockamixon, Pennsylvania

"This 5,286-acre Nockamixon State Park in Bucks County makes a great day trip to take in fall colors," Discover Boating says. "The 1,450-acre lake is popular with anglers and sailors alike, and boating novices can take a narrated tour on a pontoon boat. The park maintains a marina with boat rentals and three other boat-launch areas, so there are plenty of places to get on the water and be dazzled by nature’s fireworks."

St. Michaels, Maryland

"In Talbot County, on the Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay, lies St. Michaels, a quintessential mid-Atlantic town where watermen abound," Discover Boating says. "Home to one of the finest maritime museums, St. Michaels has something for everyone, including pie-baking competitions, a pumpkin carving challenge, and scarecrow decorating contests."

Lake Norman, North Carolina

"Only about 20 miles from Charlotte, Lake Norman in North Carolina enjoys a mild climate, so the leaf transformation starts in October at the higher elevations and continues until November lower down," Discover Boating says. "Lake Norman was created with the construction of the Ford Dam between 1959 and 1964 and is the largest man-made body of water in the state. Boaters of all kinds flock here to ski, fish, sail, and even catch a stand-up paddleboarding yoga class."

Country Club To Pay Over $440,000 To Resolve Allegations It Received Paycheck Protection Program Loan As An Ineligible Nonprofit Organization

Resolution Builds on a Steady Stream of Civil and Criminal Cases to Protect Taxpayer Dollars Spent as Pandemic-Related Assistance

          GRAND RAPIDS – U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten today announced that Gull Lake Country Club of Richland, Michigan, has agreed to pay $440,312.50 to resolve allegations in a civil case that it falsely obtained a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan in 2020 when it was an ineligible nonprofit organization.

          “The Paycheck Protection Program provided important financial relief to eligible small businesses and other entities,” said U.S. Attorney Mark Totten . “Today’s resolution demonstrates our continued commitment to protect taxpayer dollars and investigate allegations of fraud on critical government programs.”

          SBA’s General Counsel Therese Meers stated, “The favorable settlement in this case is the product of enhanced efforts by federal agencies such as the Small Business Administration working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, other federal law enforcement agencies, as well as private individuals who uncover fraudulent conduct to recover the product of this fraud as well as penalties.”

          When Congress enacted the Coronavirus, Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, it authorized forgivable PPP loans to eligible small businesses for job retention and certain other expenses.  The PPP loan program was administered by the Small Business Administration (SBA).  Under the rules applicable at the time of the loan covered by today’s settlement, certain nonprofit organizations were not eligible to receive a PPP loan. The United States alleges that Gull Lake Country Club was an ineligible nonprofit 501(c)(7) organization at the time it applied for the PPP loan.

          This settlement resolves the allegations brought in a lawsuit against Gull Lake Country Club filed under the qui tam or whistleblower provisions of the False Claims Act, which permits private parties to file suit on behalf of the United States for false claims and share in a portion of the government’s recovery.  The qui tam lawsuit was filed by Relator Wade Riner and is captioned United States ex rel. Riner v. Bay Harbor Yacht Club, et al. , No. 1:24-cv-284 (W.D. Mich.).

          The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan has demonstrated a steady commitment to hold accountable individuals and organizations that received pandemic-related funds, but did not comply with eligibility requirements or other rules.  For example, the Office has announced the following cases since 2022:

• March 4, 2022 – Two Men Sentenced for Paycheck Protection Program Loan Fraud .
• March 13, 2023 - Michigan Nonprofit Organizations Agree to Pay $225,887 to Settle False Claims Act Allegations Relating to Improper Receipt of Paycheck Protection Program Loans
• June 22, 2022 – Owners of Grand Rapids Trucking Company Plead Guilty to Bank Fraud Conspiracy, Pay $1,000,000 In Related Civil Case, In Connection With COVID-10 Relief Fraud .
• November 18, 2022 – Former State Employee and Three Others Indicted for $1 Million COVID-19 Fraud Scheme .
• December 15, 2022 – Grand Rapids Man Pleads Guilty to Covid-19 Relief Fraud .
• December 21, 2022 – Judge Sends Cocaine Dealer to Prison for Covid-Relief Fraud .
• February 23, 2023 – Former Police Officer Sentenced for Money Laundering ($500,000 in fraudulently obtained COVID-19 relief funds).
• December 5, 2023 – Roshell Beaty Sentenced to 124 Months in Prison for Over $1 Million in COVID Fraud .
• June 18, 2024 – Northern Michigan Physician Assistant Charged with Covid-19 Pandemic Assistance Fraud .

          Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrew J. Hull and Whitney M. Schnurr investigated this matter.

          The claims resolved by the settlement are allegations only and there has been no determination of liability.

Launched August 28, 2024 at the Sanlorenzo La Spezia shipyard, this elegant, sporty, functional sister cygnet is destined to mature at light speed after her global reveal.

Designed by Nautor Swan power division designer Jarkko Jamsén, with interiors by Ioanna Marinopoulou and Axel de Beaufort, Arrow features a contemporary design with wide open spaces that invite longer, more leisurely cruise experiences. Initially intended to be categorized as a chase boat, Arrow proved her prowess as a stand alone day boat in part due to a rapidly increasing fan base.

The first ever Nautor Swan powerboat launched was the Swan Shadow, followed by an inboard version, the Swan OverShadow, which debuted at Cannes in 2023. As Nautor Group President Leonardo Ferragamo noted, "When it was launched the result was overwhelming as it became a boat of its own, creating its specific niche in our waters and becoming a great day boat." That passion exhibited by the team and shared by the market led to the Swan Arrow, a 75-foot motor yacht displaying the totemic Swan DNA.

Arrow By The Numbers

The Nautor Swan Arrow is built in advanced composites using a mix infused with GRP and carbon. The walkaround design emulates that of a superyacht, but in a more nimble, highly usable format, using less fuel in a more intimate atmosphere. Focused on interaction with the sea, side opening platforms creates a 548 square foot (50 square meter) beach area that floats just above sea level. Convenient fold-down steps take guests right down to the water.

A protected cockpit with an opening roof and pivoting sliding glass doors permits a broad panoramic view. The space refreshes with an al fresco vibe when open, maintaining a cozy feel when enclosed. Designed for comfort, Arrow is versatile in helping guests to enjoy time on board regardless of weather.

Her displacement hull measures 76 feet (23.20 meters) with a 22 foot (6.90 meter) beam and a 6 foot 3 inch (1.90 meter) draft. Her maximum speed is 30 knots in the standard arrangement using two Volvo 1350 D13 Penta IPS engines, or 40 knots with the optional arrangement employing three of the same.

Arrow accommodates six to eight guests and two crew. Descending the stairs, guests looking to port find a dedicated galley that serves the aft master cabin. Reaching across the full beam, the master cabin space boasts a walk-in closet, ensuite bath, and stylish materials typical of Nautor Swan heritage.

Amidships, a VIP cabin and twin cabin, both en suite, deliver private guest spaces. An alternative layout offers two large double cabins with a lounge embracing a starboard salon, L-shaped sofa, and dining area. Away from guest areas, crew space for two is located further forward.

The Arrow is not the only Swan with a scheduled debut at the Cannes Show. The Swan Maxi 88 sailing yacht will make her debut, along with the Club Swan 43 . The Swan 88, designed by Germàn Frers with interiors by Misa Poggi, is expected to earn as many admiring looks as the Arrow. The Club Swan 43, designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian, is intended to serve as a racing and cruising crossover enhanced by top of industry technology for competitive one-design sailing and a comfortable cruising environment.

Lake Havasu Yacht Club History

In February 1969 three local enthusiastic boaters decided Lake Havasu should have a Yacht Club. These gentlemen put an article in the paper and a meeting was held at Smoketree School. The club was formed in meetings that were held at school and various locations on the lake.

The following year the Lake Havasu Yacht Club was formed with twenty-two original members. Our first Commodore was Bill Lampkin. The club incorporated as the Lake Havasu Yacht Club in September 1970. In 1972, the club secured a prefabricated metal building on the island that had been the engineering and construction offices for the London Bridge. Soon afterward, we became members of the United States Yacht Racing Union, an internationally recognized Association.

In 1983, the group began to seek a place for a permanent facility. An unused piece of land on London Bridge road was leased from the city in December 1986, and the drive to raise funds began. The Yacht Club moved into its new facility in January 1988.

The Yacht Club, sponsors and supports many community and youth related lake activities. Activities include social events, camping, cruises, races, regattas, and Lake Patrol for various events that take place in our city and on our lake. Future will include increasing sailboat racing activities, expanding youth programs, and improvements to our clubhouse.

The Lake Havasu Yacht Club continues a tradition of support  for the sport of sailboat racing with our annual McCulloch Cup Hobie Regatta. Racing will take place north of the Bridgewater Channel and the island.

Moosehead Lake Yacht Club

Dear Friends,

I take great pleasure in welcoming y’all to the 2024 Yacht Club season.  As I write this, Rachel and I are at Moosehead Lake, having arrived a few days after ice out.  This was planned last September as our short spring trip to open the camp for the season.  There are several days of work and time spent with our local friends catching up.  Then there are rainy days involving cooking, relaxing, reading and napping.

The Yacht Club is similar in that the Board of Trustees developed a 2024 schedule of events last August and planned for venues, equipment rentals and other sundry services.  In early July of this year members of the various party committees will meet to discuss events and talk strategy.  Unlike our camp, the club requires many, many hands to pull off a successful summer season of events.

Ours is a volunteer club and requires plenty of action in the background to make it work.  I particularly enjoy working on the pig roasting crew.  We spend all day (literally) around a fire, sampling a variety of sausages and other tidbits to “keep the cooks happy”, and abide the pig.  Stories are told and friendships strengthened.  If you look around and see something you would enjoy helping with, please volunteer for next year.  You’ll be glad you did!

We start the 2024 season on July 13 with the ever-popular Commodores Reception aboard the Katahdin, then on July 27 we travel to Tel and Karen Allen’s camp in Rockwood for the Pig Roast.  The Kineo Cup competition and picnic will be held August 10 and hosted by B Hilton and Karen Hilton Fresne at Squaw Point.  The Annual Meeting and Dinner will be on August 24 at the Moosehead Aero Marine Hanger.  In between will be opportunities (weather permitting) for hiking, paddling your canoe or kayak, gardening, boating raft-ups and, after the season, helping shuttle pilots for the Fly-In September 5 - 8.  Please visit our website at https://mlyc.me as it is updated for 2024 and is loaded with information.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind you of a little business that was covered at our 2023 Annual Meeting.  Our club continues to grow, and we have not raised dues to keep up with the cost of partying.  In the past we have benefitted from members who pay dues, but do not come to events, therefore subsidizing the rest of us.  Now we have a w023, he or she must attend at least one event in 2024 to maintain membership in 2025.  Also, in 2023 dues were increased beginning in 2024 to $175 per member per year.

All this to say, a good time is about to be had by all this season.  Please give of your time as you are able and enjoy this summer on the lake.

Great atmosphere, my work crowd usually loves a good bar night there. Food is good, typical bar stuff, lighting is perfect and there's a sweet outdoor area.

If you want some of the most delicious food served by some the most beautiful wait staff in Livonia you will not be disappointed between the pretzel bites, quesadillas, and pizza. Trust me when I say the atmosphere here is pretty chill and relaxed. But most importantly ask for Tyler. Out of all the staff she is number.

I was told by my employees to come here for lunch. To say I was surprised is an understatement. It's a hole in the wall bar with pretty good food I must add. Which I was surprised the food was good to be honest. I had a Southwest Philly that was really good and fries I wouldn't say that this place is family friendly though. The staff runs around in very small bikinis and most of them are tattooed up. There were a totally of two female patrons in the establishment while I was there. The staff is very friendly and the place is full of locals. If I was out with the guys this might be a place we would go. Definitely not a place for a first date, unless she's into that kind of thing.

Fun place on the water. I would say better than average pub fare. Burgers are good. Beware if you're gonna bring your family, the girls wear very small bikinis and every not and then lingerie. But if you're just going to go grab a drink, then what better place to be!!

Best place for pizza hands down!!! Was disappointed to hear they had a fire and the wood burning pizza was affected. Being waiting quite awhile to have pizza and so glad it is up and running!!! Plus girls are very friendly and customer service is always top notch. Definitely be back for pizza and future visits!!!

Dingy, dirty, food average at best. But if you go here you already know what you are getting into. I like it. :)

Literally everyone on yelp in an asshole. This place is sweet. It's your average bar and grill with good looking girls in bikinis. If that's not your vibe then don't fucking go. 10/10 place if you know what your setting is. Don't walk in with your food critic attitude and khakis on expecting it to be for you. Know your people.

A Livonia staple...albeit dated. The first sentiment they came to my head is the old adage "just Because it comes in your size, doesn't mean you should wear it" (pertaining to the wait staff), but then again this place is frequented by many, that would also frequent "Bogarts" on Michigan Ave. Nevertheless, you can expect mediocre service, and run of the mill, artery clogging bar food. The scenery is ok, until you remember your looking at a tributary of the Rouge River!! . Other than the occassional parking lot fist fight, the crowd is mostly desperate guys looking to score a date with the wait staff that likely comes from one of the many local Westland apartment complexes. Lastly, the pizza is worthwhile.

Friends took me to this place to end our night. When they mentioned it, I thought it was a completely different place. What I was thinking of was this nice little bar with a full drink menu and wine and food. This was a completely different experience. HaHaHa! First of all, this is a bikini bar. I honestly didn't know this was a thing until a couple of years ago when one of my buddies took me to a different one on Livonia. Oddly enough, doing a quick Yelp! search showed that Livonia has three of them. Weird. Anyway, our waitress was nice and didn't seem to bothered by five loud guys telling ridiculous tales of our youth fighting dragons. This is absolutely a dive bar. Don't expect anything more, buuuuuut they had a surprisingly lengthy draft beer list. While the selections probably wouldn't make mustachioed snob thrilled, it is extensive enough that people who actually just like beer will enjoy. My one friend and I split the nachos and it was actually really good. The chips were light but balanced and the toppings were generously covering the chips. I went in with minimal expectations and left having a great impression. I love when I'm surprised like this.

Very casual and chill atmosphere, good spot if you just wanna have a few beers with friends. In the summer you can sit on the outdoor deck by the water. Service varies every time. Usually the waitresses are really nice. If you don't already know the girls are all half-dressed. It's a bikini bar. I recommend getting the Appetizer Tray. It has 2 jumbo jalapeño & cheese stuffed soft pretzels, 1 lb of chicken wings, battered & fried shrimp, mini beef & cheese tacos, & onion rings. Talk about cheat day!
