AKYACHT Seals Deal for New 100m+ Superyacht
By Heather Collier
Turkish shipyard AKYACHT has now signed a contract for the build of a brand new 100-metre-plus superyacht.
The contemporary Turkey-based shipyard has dubbed their new 100-metre-plus venture as a concept that " combines uncompromised luxury, technology, engineering, and propulsion for a very-experienced client ."
With very little known about the project at this stage, we can only look to her predecessors for possible inspiration.
AKYACHT's first venture into the superyacht sphere was the 85-metre Victorious ; successfully delivered in 2021 with a world debut at the Monaco Yacht Show. Victorious boasts a glossy, sleek exterior by Michael Leach Design, with an interior penned by British design experts H2 Yacht Design .
Her ammenities include a 200-square-metre beach club with three vast terraces that can unfold to create more outdoor space, a large indoor swimming pool, a fully equipped gym, relaxing spa and beauty salon.
AKYACHT's latest vessel is also set to surpass Maltese Falcon , a stunning 88-metre sailing yacht considered to be one of the largest and most distinctive on the water. Launched in 2006, the build took nearly six years to complete due to her advanced development and engineering.
The all-new 100-metre steel and aluminium superyacht is on track to be the largest ever built in Turkish history, with delivery scheduled for 2027.

The 5 tragic minutes that sank a superyacht
PORTICELLO, Italy — Survivors of a storm that sank a superyacht off Sicily recounted their ordeal to one of the doctors who rushed to their aid, with some saying it took mere minutes for the 180-foot ship to go down.
Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News on the phone Thursday that he arrived in the seaside village of Porticello before dawn Monday, about an hour after the $40 million Bayesian sank in the violent and sudden storm.
Of the 22 people onboard, 15 survived despite storm conditions and darkness, climbing onto a lifeboat before being rescued by a nearby sailboat. The crew members have made no public statements so far, though some have been interviewed by investigators.
“They told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down,” Genco said, recounting what the survivors told him. “All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries,” he said.
It appears they had just minutes to abandon the sinking ship, Genco said.
“They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there,” he said, “And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes.”
Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi that built the Bayesian, told Sky News that there were no flaws with the design or construction of the yacht. He said their structure and keel made boats like that “unsinkable bodies.”
In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he disavowed responsibility, blaming instead the actions of the crew. “Mistakes were made,” he said.
Genco said one of his colleagues who arrived at the scene before him initially thought that only three people survived, but the coast guard reported there were other survivors and more emergency services were called in.
When Genco arrived, he found scenes of panic and despair.
“Unfortunately, we are used to such panic scenes because we are used to the shipwrecks that happen on Lampedusa ,” Genco said, referring to the island southwest of Sicily, where the wreckage of boats carrying migrants on the sea journey from North Africa to Italy are often found .
Six of the passengers were declared missing Monday, and by Thursday, the bodies of five had been recovered from the wreck , some 160 feet underwater.
Among those who survived is Angela Bacares, wife of the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , whose body was recovered Thursday.
Another survivor has been identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35. She told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled into safety.
Dr. Domenico Cipolla at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo is also part of a team of medical professionals treating the shipwreck survivors. He told the BBC on Wednesday that Emsley and her daughter, as well as the father of the child, who Cipolla said also survived, are continuing to receive psychological help.
“Psychological support was constant and is constant even today, because basically it is the wounds of the soul that are the most in need of healing in these cases,” Cipolla said.
Genco also told NBC News that he was especially concerned about the child. “She did not understand anything. She was soaking wet and cold,” he said.
Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, a yacht that was anchored near the Bayesian, said by phone Wednesday that he saw a thunderstorm come in at around 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Monday, followed by what looked like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms over water.
The International Centre for Waterspout Research noted on X that there was a “waterspout outbreak” off Italy on Monday, the day the Bayesian sank.
“I turned on the engine and made maneuvers so that we wouldn’t collide with the Bayesian, which was anchored about 100 meters from us,” Borner said. “Then all of a sudden it disappeared. Then the wind calmed down, we looked around and saw a red flare.”
Borner said he got into his boat’s tender and saw a life raft with 15 people on it. Members of the crew were administering first aid.
“I don’t know why it sank so quickly, but it may have something to do with the mast which was incredibly long,” he said. Questions have been raised about whether the mast was to blame for the accident as tall masts, even with the sails down, have more surface area exposed to the wind, which can contribute to tipping a vessel in a storm.
The CCTV footage that emerged Tuesday showed the yacht’s 250-foot mast, believed to be one of the tallest aluminum sailing masts in the world, lashed by the storm as it appears to tilt to one side before disappearing.

CD100: The 100m movie-inspired superyacht concept revealed by Cantu Design
Cantu Design has revealed renderings for its latest project, a 100 metre superyacht with an interior inspired by the owner’s love of cinema and film.
The CD100 will be constructed in aluminium and steel, and accommodate up to 16 guests and 30 members of crew.
Principal designer of the project and founder of the studio, John Cantu, has described the exterior as having a “timeless” style “heavily influenced by my experience working under Glade Johnson on Attessa IV .”
A beam of 14.82 metres will provide ample interior volume with plenty of space to add cinematic finishing touches, including a private screening room.
“The design brief required a yacht that the owner could entertain guests on at various film events around the world such as the Cannes Film Festival. The ability to host private parties within a dazzling interior with a cinema at the heart — aft of the upper deck — was an important factor,” explained Cantu.
Unusually, the CD100 has been designed with curved walkways and walls, particularly in the spa on the lower deck on the main deck between the lobby and guest areas. “One of the keys to the interior layout was to try and make the journey from one end of the yacht to the other as interesting as possible,” said Cantu. “By opting for curved walls and corridors wherever possible, it adds intrigue and avoids the mundane straight line that we have become accustomed to seeing.”
Another highlight on board the CD100 is the aft main deck with a swimming pool surrounded by al fresco seating and a full-beam deck area. This area can be used as a dancefloor or extension of the pool deck. To maintain privacy, these platforms can be lowered after launching without losing the ocean views protection from the elements.
Other details included in the design are a library, office, a circular skylounge with a second swimming pool, an enclosed observation lounge/meeting room with a private balcony and a wellness complete with a gym, massage room, hammam, sauna, changing rooms, a hairdressing salon and a special diving room.
The owner’s suite encompasses an entire deck and boasts separate his and hers bathrooms as well as a walk-in wardrobe, a private office, saloon and bar and a circular dining room for eight guests if the owner opts for a more intimate dinner. The owner’s deck also offers private access to a Jacuzzi, sunbed and helipad.
The CD100 has a top speed of 17 knots and a range of 4,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 13.5 knots.

Captain of Mike Lynch's superyacht breaks silence on sinking with 5 heartbreaking words
The captain of a superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily has issued a brief but tragic statement about the incident.
Six people remain missing after the luxury yacht was consumed by the waves, with hopes for their rescue all but vanished.
Early on Monday morning (19 August), the £30 million boat was decimated by a freak tornado over the sea, known as a waterspout, as a sudden and violent storm hit the region.
Fifteen of the 22 people on board survived the disaster by boarding a lifeboat, including a mother who clutched her one-year-old daughter over the waves to save her.
So far, one body has been recovered from the wreckage – believed to be the yacht’s Canadian-Antiguan chef, Recaldo Thomas.
The rest of the 10-person crew survived, including the captain, James Catfield, whom investigators now plan to interview as part of their official inquiry into the tragedy.
Catfield was described by reporters as “limping from an injury” as he waited outside a hospital emergency room in the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese.
However, he managed to utter five devastating words about the fatal storm, saying simply: “We didn’t see it coming.”
The Bayesian was owned by the British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who is among the six people missing and now presumed dead.
He, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah and his lawyer Christopher Morvilla were among those on board, with the trip allegedly organised to celebrate Lynch’s recent acquittal on fraud charges .
Lynch, who was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a US federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.
His wife, Angela Bacares, survived the sinking, while Hannah, like her dad, remains unaccounted for.
Also missing are Morvillo and his wife Neda, and Jonathan Bloomer – a chairman at Morgan Stanley who testified in Lynch’s defence.
The outing was intended not only as a celebration of Lynch’s legal victory but also as a “looking forward to what was coming next,” said Washington attorney Reid Weingarten, a member of Lynch’s defence team who was not on the yacht.
“A lot of people went, a lot of people were planning to go and then, of course, this happened,” Weingarten told the Associated Press .
The Bayesian, a 56-metre (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, was moored about a kilometre (a half-mile) offshore when a storm rolled in before 4 am (local time) on Monday.
Grainy CCTV camera footage taken from the shore and broadcast online, showed the boat’s 75-metre (246-foot)-long mast weathering the wind and rain before disappearing, all within the space of a minute.
Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the survivors, said he was close enough to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.
“A moment later, she was gone,” he said.
Luca Cari, a spokesman for the rescue teams, said the search was proceeding slowly because of the depth of the wreck and the limited space in which divers are able to manoeuvre.
The Bayesian now lies around 50 metres (164 feet) underwater – far deeper than most recreational divers are certified to reach.
Indeed, the depth is such that recovery crews have been forced to carry out their work in 12-minute shifts.
At the time of writing, they hadn’t yet managed to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by furniture that shifted during the violent storm.
Rescue crews said they assume the missing six are in those cabins because the storm struck when most would be sleeping, but the teams haven’t verified their presence there through portholes.
