During summer the prevailing wind in the area is the annual Meltemi that blows strong, usually at force 4-6, from the North West. Under the current pandemic situation, yachting is a safe alternative to hotel vacations. On the yacht, you will have minimal contact with strangers, and if you wish, you can sail for the whole week in the company of close family members. The less you interact with other people, the safer your vacation is.

Best Time for Sailing Vacations in Rhodes

The active tourist season on the island of Rhodes starts at the beginning of May and ends on the last days of September. The peak season is June, July, and August. The climate on the island is as comfortable as possible for tourists. It is a Mediterranean climate, mild and humid in winter but hot and fresh in summer.

In June, it is not too hot. The air temperature reaches +26 °C – +28 °C, the water warms up to +22 °C. July and August are the hottest months; the air temperature reaches +30 °C, the water warms up to +26 °C. Usually, there are no rains during these months. The northeast cool and humid wind saves you from the heat.

In September, the temperature is only a couple of degrees lower than in August, an average of +24 °C (water and air). Out of season in Rhodes, almost all spots of rest, food, and entertainment are closed. Therefore, better not consider the island for a sailing trip on the New Year holidays.

Difficulty Level: Sailing Requirements

The sailing level of difficulty is medium; special training may be required. Dodecanese islands are suitable for more experienced yachtsmen, especially in July and August, when strong and sometimes unstable winds are present. Yachting in Rhodes is not recommended for the first solo trips.

With a southerly wind, some bays do not protect from waves and wind. So, it is necessary to follow the weather forecast and think about reserve parking.

Location of Rhodes

Rhodes is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. It lies 18 km from the Cape of Kara near the southwestern coast of Anatolia. It’s the largest member of the Dodecanese islands. It has an area of 1401 km2 and 117 007 residents. Rhodes is the fourth biggest island in Greece after Crete, Evia, and Lesbos.

Can you rent a luxury yacht in Rhodes – do I need a license?

Small boats (under a certain horsepower or length), electric boats, crewed yacht charters , gulet charters may not require a license. Larger boats or those with more powerful engines need a skipper’s license. Before you confirm your sailing trip to Rhodes, please send us a copy and we will check it for you. You need to have the original copies on board, so don’t forget to take them. Rhodes Marina

This world-famous marina offers everything that you might need as a sailor. They accommodate 382 boats with a maximum length of 120 metres and a draught of up to 6.5 metres. The marina is particularly well-accessible. Since it is located close to the airport, you can get here quickly on a bus or by taxi. As for services, the marina stands out among all the Greek marinas on the Aegean Sea: they provide boat maintenance, fuel, laundry, water supply as well as many other useful services. There is even free Wi-Fi, which is not at all common in Greek marinas.

Faliraki Harbour

Kos Marina, Kos

The giant marina of the capital of Kos accommodates 250 vessels. Boats with a length of up to 80 metres and a draught of 5 metres can be docked here. Panormittis Marina

Agios Stefanos Marina, Tilos

The main marina of Tilos accommodates boats with a length of up to 60 metres and a draught of 6 metres. We can replenish our water supplies, take care of smaller maintenance tasks and go shopping here.

Palon Marina, Nisyros

This is the larger, eastern marina of Nisyros. They accommodate boats that are up to 60 metres in length and have a draught of up to 4 metres. You can choose from all the main services here, including shopping and access to water. There are several interesting sights to explore near the port, including the Zagoras Museum, which is only a few blocks away.

Limin Kalímnou, Kalymnos

This marina is located in a wonderful environment and is equipped very well. You will find all amenities required for boating: fuel, maintenance and inspection, as well as water supply. If you get hungry, there are several taverns, restaurants and bars to choose from near the port. They accommodate boats with a length of up to 20 metres and a draught of 5 metres. If you have a longer boat, you should go to the marina of Vathi a bit further to the north.

Beaches in Rhodes

Rhodes includes numerous spectacular beaches and sandy gulfs. The island has a huge collection of beaches that offer different comfort, water, and sports services. Every beach in Rhodes has crystal clear water and picturesque scenery.

Lindos Limanaki Agios Pavlos beach:

The Agios Pavlos (Saint Paul) is a small gulf that lies 48 km to the south from the city of Rhodes. It’s near to the ancient Acropolis of Lindos. According to a local myth, the gulf got its name after the nice white chapel on the seaside. Gold sand and pebbles cover the beach, where you can rent deck chairs too. This seaside surrounded by rocks offers an excellent site to swim or dive in the clear, turquoise water.

Ladiko beach:

Ladiko is a small beach and a part of a beautiful gulf 20 km to the south from the city of Rhodes. The coast is covered with fine, clean sand and tiny pebbles. Ladiko beach is especially crowded in summer. This gulf looks fascinating from the board of the small boats floating near the shore. The greenery around the beach is also really nice.

Kallithea beach:

The Kallithea beach, 8 km southward from Rhodes city, was famous for its hot thermal waters and baths. The Italians built the onetime baths which are now out of service, unfortunately. This wonderful place has palm trees, pines, and beautiful renewed buildings with amazing mosaic decoration. The emerald sea matches perfectly with this idyllic landscape. Kallithea is easily accessible from the capital of Rhodes.

Main sights in Rhodes

Rhodes is a very popular European holiday resort. No wonder why, since it provides numerous activities to vacationers. Besides the charming beaches, you can find bars, restaurants and cultural sights here. The old town of Rhodes is a World Heritage Site. History offers hidden treasures to adventurers. The old town has about 200 streets. If you accidentally get lost, it’s not a problem, but rather an opportunity to explore the city. You can walk along the medieval walls, which may seem hot without shadows.

But don’t worry! Usually, there’s a light breeze on the top, and of course a gorgeous view of the city and the sea. Beaches in Rhodes are beautiful, but visiting Water Park can be an adventurous experience too. It’s a good idea for kids, families, and bigger groups. The Water Park has open and closed slides. And if you get tired by the end of the day, there are many deckchairs as well.

The Greek coast has a Mediterranean climate . The air of the country is very clean and dry from spring to early autumn. There’s a lot of sunshine, while the amount of rain usually decreases from the west to the east. In summer, we rarely see any clouds in the sky. Rain is practically an unknown guest in the summer months. The sea can heat up to 23-25 °C from June to August. Even in October, it’s still 23 °C. The area of Greece is constantly windy, these winds, however, are always changing. The wind that dominates the summer months is called Meltemi . From June, it blows from the northwest and the northeast. It reaches its full strength, 5 to 8 on the Beaufort scale, in July and August.

The sea-wind comes in late September or early October, which blows from the southeast and the southwest. It’s a specifically southern wind, that dominates mostly in spring and fall with a strength of 2 to 4. Due to Greece’s typical winds, it’s most rewarding to plan a sailing route from the south to the north in spring and autumn, and from the north to the south in summer. The waving is preferable compared to the Croatian archipelago since there’s a greater distance between the Greek islands. The current flows counterclockwise in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin, and northward along the Turkish coast. The water flows southward on the Eastern Greek coasts, but from the west side of the Peloponnese Peninsula northern current dominates.

The climate diagrams are based on 30 years of hourly weather model simulations. They give good indications of typical climate patterns and expected conditions (temperature, precipitation, sunshine, and wind). The “mean daily maximum” (solid red line) shows the maximum temperature of an average day for every month for Rhodes. Likewise, the “mean daily minimum” (solid blue line) shows the average minimum temperature.

Cultural History Rhodes, an island with a history of 4000 years. Throughout the centuries Rhodes has been inhabited by various people: Telchines, Carians, Phoenicians, Minoans and Dorians, having built the three major cities: Lindos, Kamiros and Ialyssos, who in 408 BC, created the city of Rhodes. The island has been a centre of economic and cultural exchange between people throughout the ages. Its strategic position brought great wealth to the island and made the city of Rhodes one of the prominent cities of Ancient Greece. Famous works of art include the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the world, built in 282 BC by the Lindian sculptor Haris, until 226 BC when a strong earthquake hit Rhodes and the statue of the Colossus collapsed. At the crossroads of three continents, Rhodes experienced many civilizations who each left their own imprint on the island, including the Romans, the Byzantines, the Knights of St. John, the Ottomans and the Italians until its unification in 1948 with Greece.

Medieval Artefacts Rhodes' Medieval City is one of the most beautiful Old Towns in the Mediterranean, making its protected status as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988 no surprise. A mosaic of myriad historical periods, dominated by the Knights Templar and the Ottoman Empire. The Knights of St. John of Jerusalem arrived in Rhodes in 1310 AD. Upon their arrival, the Medieval City was enriched with Gothic and Renaissance elements. Palaces, towers, churches, arches and cobbled streets await to charm visitors and paint Rhodes' unique cultural identity today. The Palace of the Grand Master (Castello) is a magnificent monument during the Knights of St. John’s era. Its halls, houses and important exhibitions are a must-see on any tour of the island. Similarly, the Archaeological Museum is located in the Gothic building of the great hospital of the Knights and houses masterpieces of Rhodes art, where visitors will find artefacts from ancient Ialyssos and Kamiros, and mosaic floors from the city of Rhodes. A walk down Knights Street, the imposing road that leads to the Palace of the Grand Master, will transport visitors back to an ancient time where the accommodations of the "languages" of the Knights Order can still be seen.

The Medieval City of Rhodes is one of the few functional medieval cities in the world, which continues to be inhabited and alive while retaining much of its ancient glory. It is worth visiting the Castle of the Virgin, the Virgin of Burgos, the Clock, the Synagogue and the mosques of Suleiman and Recep Pasha.

Modern Metropolis Past meets present in seamless harmony in Rhodes' bustling city centre. Only here will you find castles, neoclassical buildings and Italian architecture all along the same street. Imposing Italian buildings dominate the seafront of Rhodes, a modern cosmopolitan city. In the historic centre stands Rοdon hotel, the buildings of Italian architecture where nowadays are housed in the City Hall, the Region and the Post Office, the church of the Annunciation, the National Theater and of course the small fawn statues, a notable trademark of Rhodes. Enjoy a walk in the picturesque marina of Mandraki, where yachts set against the backdrop of the castle walls make for an unforgettable image. For any wishing to venture out to the so-called Marasia, the settlements and neighborhoods just outside the city centre are well worth a trip. Following the coastal line you will find the Aquarium of Rhodes, the most important scientific center for the study of marine life in Greece. You can also browse the Municipal Gallery, the second largest gallery in Greece after that of Athens and the Gallery of Modern Greek Art, the Nestorideio Melathro in Ekato Chourmadies.

Lindos Lindos is one of the most impressive villages of Rhodes and one of the most popular tourist destinations worldwide. Instantly recognisable for its collection of chalk white houses set against an imposing backdrop, Lindos is a traditional village with a rich history and naval tradition. It is also the birthplace of Kleovoulos one of the seven sages of antiquity and Charis, the sculptor, who created the statue of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the world’s seven wonders of the world. Lindos, a village with unique beauty with the Acropolis of Lindos, dominates the top of the rock where the settlement is built amphitheatrically. Sights such as the temple of Lindia Athena built in the 4th century BC, the headquarters of the Knights, the church of Agios Ioannis, the port of Agios Pavlos will impress you. Visit the great Captain Houses with the courtyards with pebble mosaics, the wooden painted ceilings and the Lindian dishes on the walls. British tech giant Mike Lynch missing after possible tornado flips yacht

British tech giant Mike Lynch, his lawyer and four other people are among those missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among the six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body has been recovered, and police divers were trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello, near Palermo, where it had been anchored.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and was able to rescue some of the 15 survivors.

The Bayesian was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast, one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites list it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified only as Charlotte, said she had momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother.

Eight of the 15 people rescued and taken to shore at Porticello were hospitalized. One body was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for, said Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the Italian fire rescue service.

Rescue crews located the vessel and deep-water police divers were trying to access the hull, Cari said. The operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. ”I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up so early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

The seven who weren't rescued included one crew member and six passengers, the coast guard said.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.
