Why are Atkins & Hoyle designs different?

When we designed our products, we chose the best possible processes and materials to give you the strongest, lightest, and most easily mounted system.A system which would mount in a range different configurations. Our castings are our secret to sucess, and what sets us apart from ALL others. This design allows us to add strength where required and take out weight where it is not needed. As a fourth generation family business, the techniques we use were handed down generation after generation. Newer companies, and in fact all other system in the world use a bent / welded design; All Stainless will suffer a reduction in corrosion resistance because of welding. These davits cannot come close to the features Atkins & Hoyle has come to know as standard - customizable, durable, stronger, lighter, and more corrosion resistant.  Our castings are 215-R1 Anodized, a process which hardens the surface and coats them with an Electrical Insulator; preventing Electrolysis due to disimilar metals

What does “safe working load” mean?

Our davits our rated to a safe working load that is well below their tested maximum capacity. This means that we test our davits beyond what we ultimately rate them at because we know that there is a lot of extra load when your boat is on the water. Make sure that any davit system that you are considering quotes only a safe working load and is not simply the useless “maximum capacity” that many other davit manufacturers use. Other manufacturers’ tubing is not stronger than ours, not only because the unique way that we produce our products, but in the fact that the wall is reduced during their bending process. Simply put, all other davit manufacturers overrate their products

If I have an angled transom or large swim platform, how do I get the extra reach that I need?

Atkins & Hoyle davits are fully adjustable, allowing you get the most reach that is possible with a davit system. This is accomplished with our innovative spline casting that locks our modular units after a one time adjustment, thus allowing you to tailor suit the height and reach for your particular boat. Our 1900 model can also have added length to the tubes if you require even more reach, up to 12 inches. Our systems also have the ability to hold the davit away from the rail or transom to give the maximum reach that you need.

Why does Atkins & Hoyle use an aluminum-magnesium alloy?

The conditions and forces that we expect our products to go trough demand that we use a super strong, super light alloy that will not corrode in salt water. The best alloy for these specifications is Almag 35, an aluminum-magnesium alloy. This non-ferrous, anti-corrosion metal alloy is perfectly suited to the marine industry because it is lighter stronger than ordinary aluminum. Almag 35 is the lightest, strongest and most corrosion resistant alloy for marine use available today. It provides a 40% elongation, meaning that instead of breaking, the davits are flexible, absorbing shock loads, it has a tensile strength 44000 lb. per square inch and is 20 % lighter than aluminum

What is the best lifting ratio for a davit?

We believe in providing the highest lifting ratio for our davits. All of davits have a MINIMUM 6:1 block and pulley system, most come standard with a 7:1 purchase. Our 750 lb. Model 5000 has a 12:1 system plus a 6.8:1 winch. All of these purchase systems are designed to give a maximum 30 lb. pull on the rope. This provides 100% safety advantage while other manufactures provide optional block systems that exceed the tolerance of their davit systems. This ensures that you have to expend the least amount energy as possible to secure your tender.

There is no rail on my transom; can I still mount rotating davits?

Yes, all of our davit systems can be mounted in a variety of ways. The universal base mount can be fitted to any angle so it can lie flat against your deck or transom in place of a rail mount.

Hurley H2O Dinghy Davit ®

The Hurley H2O Dinghy Davit ® has a Sleek Euro Design, Marine Grade High-Density Polyethylene Cradles, and Stainless Steel Components, Functions as Good as it Looks, and is Impervious to Harsh Environments.  Our revolutionary new stainless steel mounting system provides a quick release, leaving a very small footprint profile that could pull a barge.  Each mount footprint requires only two bolts for the install and only stands 5/8" high leaving a clear deck for any activity. Mount Covers are available.

The H2O has been designed for either soft or hard bottoms.  The soft bottom model offers a wide 3" footprint for your tender.  This helps in the support of the transom where most of the weight is and is much easier on the bottom.  If you start out with a soft bottom tender and upgrade to a hard bottom, no problem, remove the soft bottom pads and add the adjustable Chock Pads.

The Hurley H2O Dinghy Davit ® is easily mounted on the swim platform.  This hassle-free system lets you lift and pull your dinghy on for easy storage or just push off for launching.   Always available in an emergency.

Properly Measuring for your Davit Mount Size

Key Dimensions Needed

A = Swim platforms internal width B = Platforms depth (transom to edge) C = Distance from top of platform to the water D = Beam of dinghy

To determine which mount system will work best for you, measure the beam of your dinghy, divide by 2 and add 4 inches. Now measure your platform (transom to the end).

You must add a number below to your platform length figure in order to determine which mount to use.

Example: If your dinghy width is 60″ then divide by 2 + 4″ = 34″. Swim platform is 32″. By adding 2″ to the platform this would make it equal to the dinghy width of 34″ so then you would have chosen the 6″ mount.

• 0 – 2″ for the 6″ Mount • 2″-4″ for the 8″ Xtensions • 4″-6″ for the 10″ Xtensions • 6″+ for the 36″ Xtensions

Hint: 4 inches of the mount must be used to secure to the platform.

Great products are characterized by their elegant simplicity of design and ease of use. The Hurley Marine H20 Davits check all of the boxes. With the help and advice given by Hurley’s staff, the installation was straight-forward and easy. Our dinghy (Zodiac 340 Aluminum Bottom with Mercury 5HP outboard) pulled-up easily and without undue effort onto the swim platform. Also purchased were the cleats that attach to the mounting plates to tie the dinghy to while it’s in the water, and mounting plate covers to prevent people from stubbing their toes on the mounting plates. If you have a swim platform, then the Hurley Marine H20 Davit system is a winner!

Our dinghy davit system has a 650-pound lift capacity, making it powerful enough to lift various types of dinghies. Lifting power is supplied by a 12V or 24V DC hydraulic power pack.

Simplistic Design

The Hide-A-Davit cradles your tender securely when in the raised position, yet leaves the swim platform completely clear of hardware in the lowered position. Once lowered, the cradle arms make convenient places to dock your tender while anchored or moored, and can be used to aid in getting in and out of the tender while it’s in the water.

Corrosion Resistant and Low Maintenance

All hardware is made from marine-grade materials and mounted underneath the swim platform, with stainless steel used extensively for structural components. Standard cradle arms are powder coated aluminum with a stainless steel connecting elbow.

If a traditional boat lift will not work for your lifting application then a davit is your economical solution.  Kit comes complete with everything you need except a concrete pad to mount on. Gear units have aluminum back plates for extra long life.

This DAVIT is DOCK MOUNTED ONLY- mounts to a concrete base with 1 1/2 – 2 cubic yards of concrete.

Calculating Davit Size:

When calculating what size davit to purchase a 70/30% ratio should be calculated.  For instance, to determine what size davit your 2,000-lb boat would need simply multiply 2000 x 70% which = 1,400.  Since we don’t make a 1400-lb davit go up to the next option of a 2,000-lb davit.

Dinghy Davits Whats the best?

Hi, I just bought a Hunter 466, with a dinghy and no davits, I prefer to have it on davits and not the fore deck, I read allot about Nova Fore Spar, but they have weight limits of 300 LBS my dingy weighs 225LBS with outboard 335 lbs, what davits are recommended to support the weight and avoid swinging with healing, or weather issue. Other things to consider; Will all the crew be able to see aft with the dingy on the davits. While I can see over (6 ft) the 5 ft first mate sees the dingy and sky. Will it cover the stern light? This will require moving the stern light. Will that make your boat longer "in the slip"? Marinas usually charge by the foot of room you take up and not the actual boat length. How will you use the walk through with the dingy on the davits? Davits are not that hard to make BTW

The above points are all things to consider when getting davits. We had our davits made by Ocean Marine Systems and are very pleased with the results. They custom build them for the model of Hunter you own, the size and weight of your dinghy and motor, if you want solar panels etc.. We have a 6:1 tackle on the transom end of the dinghy for the motor and only need a 4:1 for the bow. They supplied the davits to the Hunter factory after consulting with Hunter on each new model, so you can be sure they will not damage the stern rail on your boat. We can still use the swim platform, open lockers etc. with dinghy hauled up. In our case the dingy is mostly over the swim platform and have never been charged additional for a slip. They fold in when not in use or boat is hauled. Bob (no connection, just a very satisfied customer)

I would check out St Croix, the blocks our built in the end of the davit so when you are pulling up you don't get a twist in the block. They have two sizes for different load requirements. They will help you with the proper way to mount them or custom make you a mount.

I also have an Ocean System on my Hunter 410 (2000) and have been very satisfied. I have a walk through transom and can still get into the water going under the dinghy on the stern platform. I'm also retrieve items from the two stern lockers as well.

There are built in winches with dynema line. Approximately 10:1 ratio on them, and you can crank up the dinghy with minimal effort. You can definitely haul up a dinghy with outboard on these, and not worry about rigidity. FYI, I stiffened up the stern with internal 3/8" glass. For an initial test, I put someone in a bosun's chair, and cranked them up from the water surface. Literally two fingers on the winch for cranking 150 pounds was all it took. If it's a short trip, i keep the engine on the dinghy. Longer trips, engine on the rail. I inherited these from the PO. One suggestion.....if you are going to have new davits made, consider future needs like solar panel mounts and/or wind generator mounts so you won't have to go back and retro fit. I don't know what are Best. All I can say is that I have St Criox rotating ones and I don't like them (but my money is spent so am going to live with them)

When my Beneteau Oceanis 37 arrives it will be outfitted with Kato Marine "Voyager" Davits. Each arm is capable of lifting 420 lbs. http://www.katomarine.com/saildavits-voyager.htm They would be great on your size Hunter. They are usually seen on the larger sailboats like yours but I want a strong davit system that is independent of the push pits. I will also mount solar panels on them.  

Ocean Marine I have ocean marine davits on my 2007 H-36 that came off a 410 hunter and they are very heavy duty for sure what I like about them is the you have a option to install them so the height is so to look over and out the back with good view and my stern light is visible and access to my stern compartments also and yes can step under and out the stern and have had others come aboard while dinghy is up,I have double stainless bar to stop swinging and can secure dinghy with straps or line to secure it against the arms and double bar. I have 9'6'' with aluminum floor and 8hp motor and usualyy sail and motor with motor on dinghy and as I said I can pull up against the arms and double cross bar with line and the dinghy stays nice with out swinging all over. I think it is a very well built system with arms that extend out to keep dinghy out a way from stern and not to fold up if needed. Nick
