Meet Thomas Connelly, The Dentist Who Did Lil Yachty’s $1 Million Diamond Teeth

Mail

Hip-Hop is forever growing and expanding since its inception. And while grills have always been a staple in rap culture, it seems there’s a new trend happening in 2023: placing permanent diamonds in your teeth.

Insert Lil Yachty, who recently got $1,050,000 worth of diamonds drilled permanently into his mouth. The genius behind the project is a man named Thomas Connelly, who has been deemed the “Father of Diamond Dentistry.” Connelly shared a clip to his own social media page of Yachty’s dental impression, confirming the two diamond teeth on his upper premolars amounted to 16 carats.

Connelly was the first person to start the trend of putting permanent diamonds in teeth, with his first client being rap superstar Post Malone. He takes pride in being the first person to start this trend, later working on superstars such as Offset, Odell Beckham Jr., Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Brown, Da Baby, and more.

One look at Connelly, and it’s hard to believe he’s a dentist, given his physique and tattoos.

“I’m that guy that’s a complete mystery when you meet me, “ Connelly states with a laugh. “It’s funny, people always feel like they’re meeting somebody famous. People always ask ‘what do you do?!’ It’s almost always the same thing: UFC fighter.”

Which isn’t too far off. Connelly is a professional bodybuilder who competes and wins competitions. But he’s also a dentist, which sometimes blows people’s minds when they hear it.

The Source spoke with Thomas Connelly to discuss his background, being the first to do permanent diamond fangs on Post Malone, Lil Yachty reaching out, doing Offset’s teeth,

You’re a dentist and a bodybuilder. What came first?

The dentistry. I worked out when I was a kid, dabbled in working out and lifting weights. Really became a professional bodybuilder later in life after becoming a dentist.

Where are you from, and how’d you get your start?

I grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Went to dentist school in Detroit, then picked up my stuff and moved to the East Coast. New York, Boston, practiced there for a while. Moving to Los Angeles will be a decade later.

When you pick up the Father of Diamond Dentistry?

I did some work with Post Malone about five years ago. We permanently installed diamonds in his fangs. I’m the first person to really do that. Rolling Stone did an article and it really stuck. If you Google it, it’s everywhere.

You were the first ones to permanently put diamonds in teeth?

Yeah, consistently on a regular basis. Not just doing it, meaning doing it where it’s retained. It’s cleansable, it functions, and it’s a piece of Art. It’s not something we threw in the mouth and hoped it worked. We did a lot of research and development to curate a beautiful result.

Was it nerve-racking? Because it’s permanent.

We failed a lot in the laboratory setting. We wasted between a million and two million dollars worth of diamonds, testing. Initially we  were putting little diamond shapes, recessing them within the veneer. I was really the first person to do that. When you feel your veneer, it was smooth, but there’d be a diamond heart in it.  When we met Post Malone, I was with my diamond cutter, Isaac from Angel City Jewelers. I was in Madison Square Garden, and we showed them all kinds of cool stones. They do all these skull shapes. Post said let’s do the whole tooth in diamonds. Isaac’s like, “of course we can do it!”

How did you link with Post Malone?

Such a good question. [laughs] I was pretty heavy in the model world. I performed dentistry on a lot of beautiful women, a lot of NFL players and sports players at that point in my career. I wanted to push my services into different industries other than modeling and sports, so we began to focus on the music industry. I ran into Dre in London. “Hey Dre, this is what I do…” and he goes “Yeah, every dentist wants to do Post’s teeth. I’ll put you on the list.” They had signed a new artist named Tyla Yaweh. I said hey, you just signed Tyla. His teeth look terrible, I’ll do his teeth for free.

Dre said, “Alright, we’ll do that.” So that moved me to the front of the line. When I met Tyla, Tyla was a wreck. [laughs] We fully restored his mouth. I said bro when I’m done with you, you gotta introduce me to Post. Because he was the opening act for Post on tour. He said “I can do that,” and he did. It changed dentistry. As crazy as that sounds, up until that point, there wasn’t anybody doing really crazy stuff or anything outside the envelope. It spread like wildfire. We started on one level and now it’s even bigger stones. More stones, more expensive stones. It was one million, $2 million, $3 million. It’s a beast.

Veneers aren’t cheap. When you were offering that to Tyla, you were down for the investment?

$100 grand. I’ve been doing this 26 years, that’s all I do.

How did you link with Lil Yachty?

He hit me on Instagram. A lot of these guys hit me on IG, it’s so frequent. He said “Bro, I gotta have this.” I said sweet, let’s do it. Where are you at this week? He gave me his schedule. I said, I’ll hit you in Austin. Literally jumped on a plane the next day. Flew to Austin, he had a show. I went to his show, went to his hotel room. I measured his teeth, took some permanent impressions. Booked him 3 weeks later in LA, we did it. Started his tour, we finished.

That’s really how it’s done. I’m willing to travel and do whatever. Usually the first meeting is hey, we get the preliminary impressions. We talk the numbers, we have sample stones. That usually closes the deal. That makes it organized, because it’s real. Who pays the bills? I send them an invoice before we start. I need approval. This is all from experience. [laughs]

Talk about the process of putting the diamonds in Lil Yachty’s mouth. $1 million is insane!

It’s just under $1.1 million, $1.05 million . It’s based on the size of the karats, and color of the stones. He’s a tough case because we started with bigger stones and had to trim them down. He’s supposed to be 20 karats, I just couldn’t get it in there. So he’s 16 carats.

How long did it take?

When he comes in, the first procedure is a couple of hours. 3 or 4 weeks later, once it’s all ready, we install it. It takes me an hour.

Why do people want them permanently?

If you saw it, you’d know. It hits hard. He’s a smiley guy. He’s one of the most electric human beings I’ve ever met in my life. When he smiles, those stones just glisten. You look at it, literally: what is that? Do it again! The reason it’s become so popular is because it is absolutely stunning. It is not a gimmick. It’s legit, it looks good. It just fits. The thing that seems to be working: behind the eye teeth, we put two rounds –  two custom clusters on each side. That seems to hit. That hits real hard.

Talk about the bond you guys share, I saw he called you “my brother for life.”

We hit it off. He posted that. We were gonna do a funny skit, but didn’t have enough time. We had a good time. Texted here and there, “whatsupp.” “Hey, I’m going to be here. Stop by the show.” I do develop bonds with a lot of the guys. Like Gunna, I’m tight with Gunna. Post. Shaq.

What did you do for Shaq?

I did Shaq’s whole mouth of veneers, and did some grills for him. It’s cool. It’s really fun to be able to provide beautiful work, creative work. And really like the people you like. I’ve even considered limiting my practice to just men.

Oh wow. Why?

Because I enjoy what I do so much with all these athletes, singers. Once in a while, you get a glamorous, beautiful woman in there and it’s such a different gear. I’m very good at it, but you reach the point where you only want to do a certain type of work.  Women cosmetic dentistry is a different business.

Talk about doing Offset’s teeth also.

I have so much respect for Offset. Love Offset, this is Offset’s stuff right here. [points to shirt] That Offset and Travis Scott song “SAVE YOUR GRACE,” is so fire. You watch him, because Offset’s case was so complicated. I saw him while he’s recording his album. He gives you some snippets about the song. He posted his teeth, the final product. You feel like man, I was there.

How do you find time to work out and do dentistry?

I limit my patients to one a day. I’ll have somebody come in at 10am. Post came at noon yesterday, we went to 8pm. It’s me and him, we screw around. I worked out at 7am or 8am. Ate breakfast, ate lunch. We worked. I went home, had dinner with my kids. Put my kids to bed, so it’s a full day. I have an advantage over a regular dentist: “Oh, we have 50 patients today. 20 hygiene patients a week. A crown, this and that.” Me, I got one guy. And my fees reflect my experience; I’m very blessed.

Lil Yachty Unveils $1 Million Diamond Grills

The "Strike (Holster)" artist showed off his new smile and called celebrity dentist Thomas Connelly "my brother for life."

Lil Yachty  has yet another reason to smile.

On Thursday night, the ATL rapper took to Instagram to unveil his wildly expensive work by Thomas Connelly, a.k.a. the "Father of Diamond Dentistry.”

A short video clip shows Connelly holding Yachty’s dental impression with diamond veneers placed on his upper molars. He confirmed that the four veneers (two on each side) were 16 carats and worth a whopping $1,050,000.

“Boat Boy freezing,” Connelly captioned another post, which credited the grills to the Los Angeles-based Angel City Jewelers.

Yachty reshared the snapshots on his Instagram Stories, also highlighting his other iced-out accessories.

“17 carats in left ear, 16 carats in the teeth, and the ring 22 carats,” he wrote . “Don’t pop it to me kiddo. @Conellydds my brother for life.”

lil yachty diamond

Yachty is, of course, no stranger to mouth jewelry. The Grammy-nominated rapper reportedly dropped $35,000 on rainbow grills back in 2017, but ultimately ditched the flashy look in favor of $80,000 pearly veneers.

“It’s the white teeth show, man. N***a’s lookin’ and feelin’ excellent,” he said during a 2021 Instagram Live broadcast. “I'mma smile for the rest of the week. For the rest of the month!”

Thomas Connelly has worked with some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment, including Cardi B, Offset, Post Malone, Chris Brown, and Odell Beckham Jr. He spoke about his process during a 2021 interview with Rolling Stone , shortly after he gave Posty a set of $1.6 million 40-carat fangs.

“It’s very difficult to cut holes in diamonds without destroying them,” he explained. “In order to make a diamond in the shape of a tooth—for example, if you get a six-carat canine tooth, you need a 12-carat raw cube. So there’s a lot of waste. That diamond, they could have got three or four other diamonds out of it, so we had to waste it in order to get it into shape…I’ve been talking to a few other people who were waiting to see how this turned out before they dropped their million. So we’ll see.”

Meaning of Lil Diamond Boy by Lil Yachty

Album Cover

Lil Diamond Boy

Listen to the full song on Apple Music

"Lil Diamond Boy" by Lil Yachty seems to revolve around themes of materialism and status, particularly emphasizing the significance of diamonds as a symbol of wealth and success.

In the chorus, the repeated phrase "lil diamond boy" appears to be directed at someone who is seen as having achieved a certain level of opulence and reputation, likely due to their diamond possessions. The lyrics ask how much they paid for their diamonds, suggesting that the price and prestige associated with these gems play a crucial role in defining their identity.

The verse further explores the extravagant lifestyle associated with being a "diamond boy." References to paying a significant amount for diamonds and being recognized and admired for shining and grinding reflect the desire for material wealth and the validation that comes with it. The mention of baller Zion (presumably referring to basketball player Zion Williamson) reinforces the idea of achieving greatness and success.

The interlude raises a thought-provoking question of whether one is willing to sacrifice their life for material possessions, specifically diamonds. This may be a critique on the obsession with materialism and the consequences of valuing material wealth over human life.

Overall, "Lil Diamond Boy" appears to depict the allure of riches, symbolized by diamonds, and the desire for recognition and status that comes with material success. However, it also presents a critical view of the potential dangers and shallow priorities associated with this pursuit.

Lil Yachty Stunts On Haters With Bling-Tastic $1M Diamond Veneers

Lil Yachty has put his money where his mouth is — literally — purchasing a set of diamond veneers to casually stunt with.

On Thursday (October 12), Lil Boat took to his Instagram Stories to show off the shiny hardware, which he said cost him a total of $1,050,000.

He also made sure to mention the other pieces of jewelry he had on, along with the amount of carats in each. “Seventeen carats in left ear, 16 carats in the teeth, and the ring 22 carats,” he said. “Don’t pop it to me kiddo.”

Lil Yachty also made sure to shoutout his jeweler, writing: “@connellydds my brother for life.”

Thomas Connelly — who has done dental work for both Cardi B and Post Malone — also posted the image of Lil Yachty, writing: “Boat Boy freezing [freezing emoji] @lilyachty [ice cube] 16 [carrot emoji] $1,050,000.”

See both posts below:

This isn’t the first time the southern rapper has changed his look. Last month, he issued a direct message to those who were judging his new appearance after kicking his lean habit .

Lil Yachty previously took to Instagram to show off his new look, flaunting his newfound buzz cut (which was hidden under a cap) and slimmed-down physique in a series of photos.

“I chopped da top , fukk it,” he wrote in the caption, referencing him chopping his signature braids off.

While many of his followers applauded his “glowing” complexion and “good genes” in the comments section, it appeared Yachty also encountered his fair share of trolls — and took to Twitter hours later to fire back.

“I did not stop drinkin lean for n-ggas to bully me and tell me i look like i have leukemia,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Yachty recently appeared in Drake’s new visual for his single, “Another Late Night” off his For All the Dogs  album.

The Cole Bennett-directed video shows Drizzy and Lil Boat having a trippy time while surrounded by wolves and colorful lights. The video was shot in just two hours, according to Bennett’s Lyrical Lemonade YouTube page.

In addition, Drake also surprised Lil Yachty fans when he joined Boat in Toronto earlier this month for his Field Trip Tour .

The 6 God could be seen lurking in the crowd up in the balcony section. Needless to say, Drake’s presence didn’t go unnoticed and at some point during the show he jumped on the mic himself.

“Aye Boat,” Drake said while rocking colorful hair accessories. “I know you been going crazy tonight. First of all, I just wanna say, y’all make some noise for one of my best friends in the muthafuckin’ world.

“You been going crazy tonight. I haven’t been home in four months, so you take yourself a little break. I’ma try some shit out.”

From the comfort of the VIP section, Drake then proceeded to perform his “Meltdown” collaboration from  Travis Scott ‘s  UTOPIA , which sent the hometown crowd into a frenzy.

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

This intriguing collaboration between London-born electronic producer James Blake and Atlanta alt-hip-hop star Lil Yachty (aka Miles Parks McCollum) has been teased over several months via social media and Blake’s CMYK DJ sets. In an Instagram clip early this year, Yachty remarked that “I think James has worked with a quite substantial amount of hip-hop artists. But this project is so left for both of us.”

Blake’s credits have indeed spanned rap and R&B heavyweights (Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Frank Ocean), as well as Latin star Rosalía and indie singer-songwriter Bon Iver. Yachty, meanwhile, has increasingly ventured beyond the confines of any one genre, with his most recent solo album, Let’s Start Here (2023), shuffling into psych-rock.

“Left” is precisely what you would hope for from this pair. Bad Cameo is a shape-shifting transatlantic union borne out of a mutual respect and experimental spirit. While both artists have tended towards earnestness previously, this album’s artwork suggests that they’re not taking themselves too seriously; Blake’s hand rests by a cup of tea and plate of beans, while Yachty holds a cup of something bubblegum pink.

What they each bring to the table is initially tricky to pin down. Blake’s fragile electro-soul is instantly recognisable; Yachty’s fragmented wordplay is equally mesmerising, whether he’s singing or spitting surreal rhymes.

Album cover of ‘Bad Cameo’ by James Blake & Lil Yachty

The murky electronic atmospheres and brooding rapped/crooned sentiments of the opening track, “Save the Savior”, sets the tone. Poppy hooks emerge from the ether, including the tender, guitar-laced “Twice” and the bittersweet reflections of “Missing Man”. At points, the music brings to mind the arty, eerie electronica of OMD’s 1983 album Dazzle Ships . Elsewhere, the woozy electro drone of “Run Away From the Rabbit” evokes Mica Levi’s soundtrack for sci-fi horror movie Under the Skin : it’s simultaneously beautiful, extraterrestrial and unnerving.

There’s a lot going on in Bad Cameo , and the album is arguably most rewarding when you go with its wayward flow. Melodies are hauntingly catchy — in particular, the plaintive expressions and percussive breakdowns of “In Grey”, where Blake confides, “If everyone behaved just like me/We’d all be lonely”. Despite the melancholic mood, you get the sense that the two musicians had a blast working together. They entwine their styles while giving each other plenty of space; the material melts into an intoxicating kind of dream.

‘Bad Cameo’ is released by Quality Control/Motown/Republic

Dame Dash Will Give a Roc-A-Fella Chain to Anyone Who Bids Over $10 Million to Buy His Stake in Roc-A-Fella Records

Dame Dash says he'll give a Roc-A-Fella chain to the person who bids over $10 million to buy his stake in Roc-A-Fella records.

Dame Dash Promises Roc-A-Fella Chain to Highest Bidder

On Monday (Aug. 19), Dame Dash hopped on Instagram to speak on his 33.3 percent stake in Roc-A-Fella Records, which will  be auctioned off by U.S. Marshalls on Aug. 29 in New York City. Part of that 33.3 percent includes Jay-Z's seminal debut album,  Reasonable Doubt , which Dame's stake in is still for sale. Jay-Z  filed for ownership  of the legendary project earlier this month, and will receive his rights to the LP in 2031. To incentivize buyers to continue bidding, Dame announced he'd be gifting a Roc-A-Fella chain to the person who bids over $10 million.

"So if you do wanna buy one-third of Roc-A-Fella Inc. you are gonna have to bring some bread, and anything over 10 million, I'm gonna sweeten the pot," Dame said in the video below. "You get an original Roc-A-Fella chain from off my neck. ’Cause I was the only one that gave out Roc-A-Fella chains when Roc-A-Fella really existed. If I don't give you the chain it's not a legit Roc-A-Fella chain. You get one of these, this is legit. This is the old-school one from off my neck. You know like when I took one off my neck and gave one to Kanye, Cam'ron, all that."

He continued, "So, again, if you're gonna call please have the intention of spending some real money and actually completing the transaction, but if you come with the right amount of money you're gonna get a chain or at least you'll have to battle the homeboy on the first right of refusal."

Reasonable doubt ownership to transfer to jay-z.

Dame's push to get his stake sold comes after Hov's attorneys notified the courts that  Reasonable Doubt will come under Jay-Z's ownership in 2031. The entire ownership of the project will be transferred to "one Shawn Carter/Jay-Z."

A few days later, Dame insisted the album was for sale  so no potential buyers would be swayed into thinking it was no longer available.

"They can say what they want, this sh*t is still for sale," Dame wrote on IG earlier in August. "You’re not buying a copyright, you’re buying a piece of a company ROC A FELLA INC. Please only serious inquiries only!"

The copyrights would cover Hov's debut album and title, but also each song on the 14-track release. This means the buyer of Dame's share would own the entirety of the album for seven years before handing it to Hov. The auction didn't seem to change anything, as the copyrights for the project were already set to return to Jay-Z 35 years after the album dropped. Jay-Z's lawyers simply wanted to get the ball rolling.

Dame's upcoming auction is a result of a legal filing from director Josh Webber. He  filed a suit against Dame  for copyright infringement back in 2019, and won more than $800,000 in a civil judgment against the music executive. Webber had claimed Dame promoted the 2019 film  Dear Frank  as his own despite being removed from the project's production.
