A spectacular series of photographs as a yacht broaches and heads for the freeway

Déjà vu in Perth. In last year’s Schweppes Little Wheel Regatta Tristan Brown’s BW8 buried its nose in a stiff Fremantle Doctor and a spectacular broach sequence followed. This year it was Will Boulden’s turn. In a big breeze above 25 knots and gusting to above 30, the RO sent them off with reefed mains. Even before the start though, a spinnaker was destroyed when it wrapped around the forestay in a practice run.

Experienced hands like Sam Gilmour, Matt Jerwood and Lachy Gilmour handled the conditions with comfort and looked to be thoroughly enjoying the experience.  Newbies though, found the going pretty tough and it wasn’t long before the big gusts sweeping the course started to introduce errors.

The attached photo sequence is of Will Boulden and his crew. They were marginally in control after setting their kite, but lost it altogether three-quarters of the way down the leg, broaching wildly to starboard, spilling two of the crew into the water and allowing the kite to pass between the mast and the forestay, which locked off the halyard. 

With the Kwinana Freway looming large in the background and looking increasingly like an unplanned parking spot, the yacht was surrounded by support craft.  Eventually a support boat crewed by Ken Booth (helper) and Graeme Monkhouse (driver) secured a tow line to the bow of the yacht and pulled it head to wind, thus not only preventing it from finishing on the beach, but also bringing things under some semblance of control.

For the record, Matt Jerwood heads the leaderboard by a point ahead of Sam Gilmour, Lachy Gilmour is third and Will Boulden, whose yacht featured in these images, is fourth.  The finals are today.

The 30.2m/99'1" 'BW' motor yacht built by the Italian shipyard Benetti is available for charter for up to 8 guests in 4 cabins. This yacht features interior styling by French designer Zuretti.

Guest Accommodation

Built in 2007, BW offers guest accommodation for up to 8 guests in 4 suites comprising a master suite and one VIP cabin. There are 4 beds in total, including 1 king, 1 queen and 2 convertible. She is also capable of carrying up to 6 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Keeping comfortable and entertained on BW is easy thanks to the available amenities, notably a beach club for you to relax on the edge of the water.

BW benefits from some excellent features to improve your charter, notably Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to stay connected at all times, should you wish. You can stay comfortable on board whatever the weather, with air conditioning during your charter.

Performance & Range

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 15 knots with a range of up to 2,100 nautical miles from her 22,500 litre fuel tanks at 10 knots. An advanced stabilisation system on board reduces the side-to-side roll of the yacht and promises guests exceptional comfort levels at anchor or when underway.

BW knows a thing or two about fun on the water, with a selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to enjoy whilst on charter. Principle among these are two waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. Another excellent feature is a wakeboard so guests can show off at speed. In addition there is a kayak - a tranquil and relaxing way to pass the time. If that isn't enough BW also features fishing equipment and snorkelling equipment. BW features two tenders, but leading the pack is a 4m/13'1" Tender to transport you in style.

BW is available upon request for charter this summer. She is already accepting bookings this winter for cruising in the Caribbean.

Bakewell-White 8 impresses on debut in Perth

'The new BW8 got a good workover on debut in the fresh Perth breeze.'

Stepping ashore from a session which varied from 12 to 20 knots on Matlida Bay, we caught up with sailmaker Paul Eldrid. 'This boat is really well balanced, it literally sails itself uphill. Even when we deliberately over powered her with a Code 1 jib in 20 knots, we couldn’t lose her upwind. We tried to break the rudder free but it just wouldn’t let go' he said.

A very satisfied builder, Peter Milner, added his thoughts. 'The boat has great form stability, good feel and responsiveness, and is very easy to sail. Brett (the designer) really got the design right with this boat. From the sailing we’ve done so far, we haven’t found any bad habits, and there is no misbehaving even in the gusty and wind shear conditions around 22 knots we had the other day.'

Observations from the chase boat and looking over the photos of the test sessions have pleased the project co-ordinators. The ergonomic’s of the walk around foredeck worked well during testing and will be terrific for both training and racing purposes. The simple systems and well positioned layout of the controls make the boat easy for crew through all the manouveres. Downhill the BW8 is slippery, she pops onto the plane early, is lively, and responds well to good downwind helming.

The all round performance, her lines, modern cockpit layout, and the quality of the finished product are a credit to the efforts of WA's leading yacht club's and their design and construction partners in the BW8 project. The yacht well matches the range of uses that are intended by clubs and is also appealling to the private market.

'She is a quick, exciting, and powerful little boat 'perhaps a fraction more so than originally intended by the working party' said RPYC Vice Commodore Mark Fitzhardinge. 'We don’t think that’s a negative, particularly because of the huge amount of interest from local, national and international potential owners since the launch. She may need a small spinnaker added to the sail wardrobe, and the smaller headsail will certainly come into play early for training purposes, and with youngsters and novices. We're delighted with the final product - right on the target of what we wanted.'

The BW8 features an interesting cockpit layout.

RPYC's order of 6 will see boats 2 and 3 arrive next week. It is understood that RFBYC are close to firming up their order, and that SOPYC will follow after that. There has been confirmed interest from a further 6 private buyers not involved in the clubs' acquisitions. The RPYC purchase program will see the class regularly racing on Saturday's following the completion of their 6th boat in mid December.
