How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

aurora b yacht owner

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

AURORA yacht interior

The interior of the AURORA yacht is strongly inspired by the Art Deco style of the 1920s. The design has influenced by several designers from that era.

Responsible for this luxurious design is Winch Design , one of the world’s most successful yacht designers.

Every deck has spaces created for families, and the interior is highlighted by the lighting fixtures all around the yacht.

The interior of AURORA is also quite a bit larger than other yachts of similar size, partly because of the full-beam sky lounge.

One of the more impressive areas on the yacht. She is one of the yachts with the most interior volume in the world, so there is plenty of space for her guests.

In doing so they have ensured that a yacht which influenced many other clients with her sleek interpretation of the classic Feadship look has remained in premium condition.

The first refit in 2007 covered a range of interior and exterior upgrades, an engine room overhaul and a comprehensive repaint. Ten years later Aurora B returned home for structural repairs to the main deck bulwarks, a new sewage treatment system and tanks, an AV/IT upgrade, various interior works and another new livery. Read this article from PILOT 2018 for a fascinating insight into how the classic exterior profile of Aurora has shaped the aesthetic of many a Feadship over the decades, including the thoughts of the man behind the design, Frits de Voogt.

Inside the Amazing Superyacht Aurora

Aurora Superyacht

Residential architects have become the new darlings of the superyacht world. In some cases, they are replacing traditional yacht designers. In most, they are making the familiar, well-established marine design conventions seem like the fashion equivalent of a turtleneck—nice, but not exactly pushing it.

Owners are now asking for the style and ambience of home aboard their custom vessels, and they want it delivered with requisite individuality. As a result, they’re enlisting interior-design studios and specialists who know how to achieve a look, not just source a few plush furnishings. Achille Salvagni —whose impressive portfolio includes Central Park pieds-à-terre, London townhouses, and a sought-after collection of furniture and lighting—has ascended to a prestigious position within the superyacht scene. Known for high-level craftsmanship and bespoke, know-them-when-you-see-them details, Salvagni has become the go-to designer for clients who want a different kind of yacht experience. Aurora , the recent 161-foot launch from Italian shipyard  Rossinavi , could be one of his masterpieces.

Aurora is Salvagni’s third collaboration with Rossinavi , after the 230-foot Numptia and the 164-foot Endeavour II . Each vessel exemplifies his uncanny ability to combine refined decor with subtle colors and fluid spaces while still remaining distinctive. “I see myself as much as a psychologist as a designer,” Salvagni told me during a tour of Aurora at the Monaco Yacht Show. “I spend a lot of quality time with my clients so I can learn what their dreams are. Then I turn those dreams into designs they might never envision themselves.”

Designing a yacht requires an entirely different mind-set from a beach house in Malibu or palazzo in Venice. Not only is there the obsession over materials, since a boat needs to be as lightweight as possible, but there are also no permanent ties with surrounding terrain. “If you’re creating a design for Palm Beach or London, the heritage of the place will give roots to the project’s identity,” says Salvagni. With yachts, the view constantly changes. “So the design becomes more about the owner than a specific location,” he adds.

For Salvagni, Aurora conjures up the image of a rhino—particularly looking head-on. “You can almost see the muscles beneath her skin,” he adds. The 28-year-old Swiss owner of Aurora wanted a yacht with exceptional visual appeal, both inside and out, so veteran yacht designer Fulvio De Simoni created an exterior defined by sharp edges, huge deck spaces, and a low-slung superstructure. Special features include two saloons, a private terrace for the upper-deck master suite, and a spa with a steam room in the beach club.

The unconventional exterior meant extra headaches for Salvagni, especially the enormous forward windows that slope down in the master suite. “The yacht from the outside was amazing, but I also realized that we would never be able to hide the structural elements,” says Salvagni. “Somehow, we needed to absorb them into the design.” He did this by creating “white wings,” or broad leather-covered pillars that integrate well with the pitch of the windows. The wings and windows, sitting in front of the king-size bed, offer an exceptional view of the water without compromising the suite’s sense of harmony. “We were able to take a space that was closer to the design of a racecar and give it a residential environment,” says Salvagni.

After seeing dozens of custom superyachts at Monaco, I was struck by Salvagni’s creation. The entire space is a fluid, confident expression defined by the most audacious of all design moves—the curve. From the skylight to the sculptural staircase and voluptuous seating in the saloon, Aurora bends easily into this curvilinear language.

“Noble materials,” as the designer calls them, were essential to the project. A champion of artisan-made pieces, Salvagni was thoughful with his material choices and created custom furnishings throughout. To give the interiors layers and dimension, he selected a variety of woods—brushed teak on the floors, limed sycamore on the walls—along with several types of Carrara marble that he handpicked from Italian quarries. The dining table has a gold-leaf top in an almost-forgotten technique developed by 1920s Parisian cabinetmakers that gives it a tactile, crocodile-skin feel. Salvagni paired this table with a futuristic globe chandelier he designed for the dining area. Aurora ’s owner wanted the yacht to be a “fast speedboat” that reaches 28 knots, so De Simoni and Salvagni were cognizant of weight. The wavy marble wall in the master suite, for instance, is actually a Carrara veneer over carbon fiber.

The wine “cellar” is the vessel’s heart, positioned in the center at the junction of two corridors. “[The owner] wanted the wine collec-tion to be part of the yacht, so we designed an area where it can be seen without being too ostentatious,” says Sal-vagni. The effect of so many colored bottles is beautiful, like looking into a Fifth Avenue jewelry store. The climate-controlled cabinets display different light effects for specific wines, and a computer controls how much exposure the more light-sensitive vintages receive. The owner can access the cellar by scanning his fingerprints.

Imbuing Aurora ’s design with such refinement, Salvagni succeeded in elevating the vessel beyond “a static space that is simply decorated with furniture and wallpaper”—exactly what the cool kids are after.

By Oliver Pearson   15 June 2017

In a recent press announcement, the iconic German shipyard confirmed that the 31m/100ft motor yacht AURORA was delivered to her owner last week.

Launched in March, and completing her sea trials at the end of May, AURORA is now in the hands of her discerning owner, with her maiden voyage scheduled for the middle of the month.

Confirmed to be spending her debut season in the Mediterranean , there’s no doubt that the exceptionally styled motor yacht is going to be turning heads in the summer hotspots.

Described as ‘a modern interpretation of an old classic’, the interior and exterior have been meticulously styled by the team at Winch Design to lend AURORA an extreme distinctiveness.

Whilst her communal and guest spaces take their cues from the art deco movement of the 1900s, there are still plenty of innovative touches which make her a superyacht of the future.

Out on the exterior, mahogany and stainless steel have been artfully integrated to provide both a unique profile and sense of elegance.

A secretive 28-year-old European millionaire commissioned this stunning superyacht and designed it to resemble Iron Man. The 161-foot-long vessel has a large beach club, a 120-inch interactive LED screen to play video games, and a password-protected wine room.

The amazing and individualistic Aurora Yacht –

The luxury 161-footer may be named after a princess or a natural phenomenon, but it looks utterly masculine and boasts robustness not usually seen in this size category. The outstanding beach club exemplifies how the designers maximized space to fulfill the owner’s wishes while keeping the volume under 500 gross tons to comply with regulations. ‘He actually wanted a 50-meter-long speedboat,’ shared De Simoni. This inspired the sloping roof of the superstructure, flat lines, no upper deck, and sundeck.

Additional Specs, Equipment and Information:

Aurora is an outstanding yacht in many ways. Designed to race around the World, and around the buoy's. Her all purpose hull form is not type cast to fit a rule or a particular race. Aurora is a great all around performer that can do exceptionally well in lighter winds and shines equally well when the breeze is on. Her construction is well proven. She has sailed around the World, yet you would never know this looking at her. The current owner has adapted Aurora to a fit the dual purpose role as a casual cruising yacht with the thoughtful addition of a more private owner cabin in the bow.  Aurora is an outstanding value for anyone looking for true sailing performance that will not disappoint on the race course or when taking your family for a day sail.  She should be particularly well rated under the ORR rating rule used in the Newport to Bermuda Race.  Consider Aurora if you are looking to do the 2020 race and don't have a boat yet.

As noted in an article from Sailing Anarchy –

“AURORA, built in 1992, is a racing machine that has done Transats, Fastnets, and Bermuda Races and taken home trophies for more than two decades.” She was designed by navalarchitect Bill Tripp Jr and built by renowned Brooklin Boat Yard. The design brief wasintended for extensive ocean racing without compromise to performance. She met and exceeded that goal as proven by her extensive racing record.

The current owner has taken this a step further, without compromise to her sailing characteristics, transforming Aurora into a cruiser/racer. In 2018 she had a minor refit by the builder, during that time they added an "owners” cabin forward, a new windlass, AC/heat, new electronics. The pipe-berths amidships have been replaced with comfortable seating although she can still sleep 9.A new set of pulpits and stations have been added to the boat which are taller for added safety.

Having been built by the world-renowned Brooklin Boat Yard, which is extremely well known for their work with wood and especially for strong ocean-capable yachts, she benefits from composite construction with visible wood on the interior which makes it very quiet and good looking as well as very functional and comfortable. Her hull is cold molded, her decks are S-glass with foam core and she sports a carbon spar and rudder and is easily sailed by two people.
