Aquila 44 power catamaran

Aquila 44 Power Catamaran: Boat Review

  • The Aquila 44 is a value for money power catamaran.
  • The bow-to-bridge walkway is a good design.
  • This power cat has frugal running costs and requires low maintenance.
  • It has excellent optional hard clears.
  • However, overall attention to finishing could be better.

Post-GFC, it’s a big call to import a brand as new as Aquila catamarans, but with the market shifting towards more efficient and spacious cruising, NSW-based Multihull Central has taken the plunge.

Aquila Yachts – formerly a monohull sail boat brand – has re-emerged in the market with three keel-up power catamaran models: the Aquila 38, Aquila 44 and Aquila 48. Hull designs are computer-aided and each hull is comprehensively pre-delivery tested in the local waterways of their manufacturing partner Sino Eagle Group’s Shanghai HQ.

The Sino Eagle Group is not new to composite manufacture having a presence among world-class skiffs, skis and even aeronautical parts. Nor is it new to yacht manufacture, having built monohulls under the Aquila name in the past and undertaken joint venture and contract manufacture for Leopard as well as custom builds.

The first thing you notice about the Aquila 44 is the volume of the foredeck over the front third of the sponsons. Oceangoing power catamarans typically leave this area open or netted, allowing the front sections of the bows to move deeper into and out of the swell while avoiding slamming, or worse, digging in of the foredeck.

Enclosing the area between works only if the displacement of the sponsons is great enough to stop the bows from dropping too deep or if the foredeck is high enough to steer clear of trouble but Aquila has taken its solution straight from merchant shipping and it’s another example of the company’s desire for efficiency and space maximisation – bow bulbs.

The designers added displacement forward of the bow and waterline length by way of substantial bulbs. They’re noticeable underway as they lift the bow and pierce the water, shearing it around the hulls more cleanly, improving efficiency.

During our day aboard we weren’t lucky enough to find swells bigger than a metre but with typical quartering sets across our starboard bow en route to Rottnest Island, I kept watch for any unwanted pitching. I didn’t notice any, the bulbs lifting clean of the water allowing the hulls’ length and balance to take care of the wave separation. During any moment where one bulb was deep, its angled-up design worked well with the moulded lifting strakes to bring it back level. It’s an excellent bit of engineering that adds efficiency but importantly allowed the designers more freedom to maximise floor space.

Adding bulbs to the boat, even if they add some buoyancy at rest, still changes the centreline balance so the team added stern in-fills under the boarding platforms to equal out their effect. This again adds to a waterline length that must be somewhere north of 46 feet all told.

Layout and design

Catamaran owners rule the roost when it comes to useable space, especially when sponsons become large enough to accommodate berths. The Aquila 44 has this but the design, courtesy of the bulbous bows, takes a step further with a full-beam bow master, something I’ve not seen on a catamaran under 50 feet. By sinking the master en suite into the port sponson and a neat study-cum-robe area into the starboard side, the master feels exceptionally airy.

Twin guest rooms feature double beds and as standard come with en suites. Our test boat swaps one en suite for a laundry with additional refrigeration, a smart idea for those looking to spend long periods at sea.

The main saloon focuses on entertainment, with a large lounge framing an extendable dining table. Opposite is a raising LED monitor with room below and beside for storage. The galley is well equipped and with supplementary refrigeration below decks, you have everything needed to live aboard. A stand-out feature has to be the full-sized opening window with fold-down bar. It makes the best use of bench space and doubles up as a servery to the rear lounge.

The rear lounge features touches designed by an experienced user, with lit cup holders everywhere, their light complementing LED deck lighting.

Wide and featuring plenty of grab rails, side access to the bow is safe and secure. Here you’ll find one of my favourite design features – the bow-to-bridge stairway. Non-slip tread is moulded into the master cabin roof and leads up to the bridge by way of one moulded and two floating steps. It opens up the use of the bow and makes access to fenders and ropes quicker and safer under the captain’s gaze.

The bridge again puts entertaining first. Our test boat’s owners declined the optional gas cooker in favour of bench space but a portable stove would fix that. An optional fridge and icemaker compliment the standard sink to handle refreshments, while an excellent set of optional hard clears fold up and away to allow the summer breeze to roll through.

The helm is central, thanks in part to the need for access to the bow steps, and shares seating with yet another large lounge. That brings the total seat space easily over 10 including the dining area aft of the helm.

A standard Fusion stereo takes care of the party sounds and by linking with speakers around the hull, can control sound levels throughout. Electronics are by Raymarine, including the excellent autopilot, and linked to the Volvo ECV system displays all key engine data. The helm positioning is spot on with the wheel adjustable and the excellent digital throttles set at a comfortable height.

Perhaps my only gripe was some attention to detail. The cabinetry is cut to perfection, with near faultless fitment, but excess sealant was a small let down. A few hours’ tidying would settle those as picky as me, but for many it won’t be an issue.

The Trade-a-Boat verdict

The Aquila 44 will find favour with long-distance cruisers and those looking for a viable charter option. It is an ideal option for Multihull Central’s intriguing new concept, the SEAbbatical, a program that helps those short of time or low on skills plan long-distance sojourns, with financial advice, preparation and planning.

The concept will appeal to the cost-conscious as it targets the use of chartering to offset costs while planning and training is undertaken. Multihull Central hosts online and live summits for SEAbbatical, something worth entertaining if you are considering a long distance live-aboard journey.

Aquila shows strong signs of being a long-term brand. Having recruited key positions from European companies and already having sold more than 25 44-foot models alone, the company looks to be setting itself up as a serious contender.

The designers nailed their goal to create an efficient cruising catamaran that maximises space. The Aquila 44 makes the best of clever design at an astounding price.

Summary / Test Aquila 44, a motor catamaran tested by the American market

aquila 44 catamaran review

The Aquila 44 is a motor catamaran, specially developed for this type of propulsion, like the rest of the range. Although the brand is American, production takes place in China. This comfortable model makes it easy to move around on board and has a hull that stands up to any test!

Chloé Torterat

The Aquila 44 sets the bar high in terms of design: a bow with a narrow wave piercing bulb, a companionway giving access to the foredeck from the front of the flybridge , and a very ergonomic aft cockpit equipped with a modular bar on the rear bulkhead. Its interior layout houses three to four cabins, making it an ideal candidate for charter. Finally, its well-designed hulls ensure a very comfortable passage at sea, even in the waves .

Aquila 44: Power Catamaran Review

This multicultural multihull has universal appeal and a new home in a whitsundays' charter fleet.

The worldwide enthusiasm for sail cruising catamarans is now spilling into purpose-designed powercats. One craft that really illustrates the point is the Aquila 44, a genuine motor cat from the keels up.

OVERVIEW - Chinese made and American designed Originally developed by the MarineMax US marine group, the Aquila 44 is a versatile cruising craft that can be a private cruiser, self-drive charter or a skippered charter boat. You can order her also in a four-cabin version to maximise charter returns.

The mid-range model of the three Aquila models including the 38/44/48 is built by well-respected Sino Eagle Yacht Group in China. The hulls have hard chines and V-bottoms so they can plane at higher speeds.

The Aquila 44 runs big turbo diesels so it can operate at higher speeds than typical cats. Despite upgraded Volvo D4 300hp models over the 225hp standard engines, it's not massive power in the normal motor-boat sense so she's very economical to cruise. Barrier Reef, here we come!

PRICE AND EQUIPMENT - A US-designed powercat with survey options The finish on the test boat was very good. The cherry wood timber panelling was matched by the attractive cream dinette upholstery. The double stainless steel sink and black Corian benches are a top feature of the galley, as is the electric convection microwave oven.

The big picture windows in the topsides give extra light in the sleeping cabins. But on summer nights the best entertaining spot is the upstairs lounge/dining table with optional BBQ.

The massive width of the Aquila ensures you can carry a good-sized RIB tender on davits across the transom. So you can go ashore quickly without needing to book into an expensive marina.

Our test boat also had the optional reverse-cycle air-conditioning fitted with separate controls in each cabin.

Base price starts around $1,038,220, but the test boat was commissioned for commercial work and had some extras over and above the usual rec spec to meet survey, plus the bigger Volvo D4 300hp engines. It was a $1,2540,000 (ex-GST) boat.

HULL AND ENGINEERING - Water-ballasted at rest for even greater stability A key design feature is bulb bows on each hull. Combined with extended transom pods this makes the Aquila ride very level and helps reduce hydrodynamic drag and lower fuel consumption. Also self-flooding water ballast tanks aft help keep her very stable at slow speed and at rest.

Water tankage is better than average at 680-litres, but you might need a water-maker as well for serious long-range cruising.

Construction is (vinylester) resin infusion for the hull, deck and bulkheads for high strength and stiffness, while the engines have underwater exhausts, vee drives, and thought has gone into servicing room throughout.

Following the Sydney Boat Show launch, I hopped aboard the Aquila 44  before she headed back home to Queensland. It wasn't a great day for testing — cold, windy and occasional showers — however, on the plus side, it was a perfect opportunity to test the cat in rough seas.

ACCOMMODATION AND LAYOUT - A seriously big cat and definitely suitable for permanent onboard living. The deck superstructure covers the craft from bow to stern and coupled with a lower tunnel creates impressive deck and interior space for a 44-footer. The enclosed foredeck has a large electric anchor locker and wrap-around bow railing.

You come aboard via spacious transom steps into a big, spacious rear cockpit with large rear lounge. There are bar-stools and a bar on the portside with opening window into the rear galley. Having the galley aft in the saloon means drinks or food can be served directly to guests in the cockpit area, or forward to the large U-shaped dinette in the saloon.

Apart from a huge saloon/galley there's a massive owner's suite spread across the front end of the boat with king-size island berth and spacious bathroom on the port side. There's also a walk-in wardrobe study/dressing room/office to starboard.

The expansive living space of the saloon-cum-galley is impressive and includes a dedicated entertainment centre with wine cooler and remote-controlled retractable TV. There's also a separate navigation station aft with double shelf electric fridge/freezer.

A for'ard passageway gives you direct access to that amazing owner's suite. You go down a few steps into the en-suite bathroom, which has a separate shower stall with teak floor grate and a teak seat. Toilets throughout the boat are all freshwater electric macerators.

Back in the saloon, passageways lead down into the two hulls where there's a queen-berth guest cab and toilet/shower compartment each side. One of these shower/toilet compartments could convert to a laundry if desired.

ON THE WATER - A rough-water test After a run up past a mist-shrouded Opera House we darted across Sydney Heads to Manly in a nasty, rolling 3-metre sea with lots of wind chop pushed by a 25 knot Southerly.

In these conditions the Aquila 44 was right at home riding the waves nicely and sitting very level most of the time. She rode along comfortably at 17 knots using her tunnel with central wave-piercer to cushion the bumps.

It was a very impressive performance and makes you confident about doing longer offshore trips.

Whilst some aspects of the Aquila reminds you of the smaller outboard-powered cats, she actually takes her cue from modern commercial cats (fast ferries etc). The hull/tunnel configuration allows her to operate equally well at slow displacement speed, semi-displacement or plane-speeds.

On the relatively flatter water of the harbour she got along as fast as you want for harbour touring — 21-22 knots. Interestingly performance actually improves with the fresh wind and wave-chop.

The island helm station on the bridge allows plenty of seating around and behind for guests. Here you have excellent 360-degree vision and nice steering control via hydraulic steering to twin skeg rudders.

You can add a rear camera to enhance your views back aft when docking, or possibly Yacht Controller docking remote or cockpit controls, while forward access down a central walkway from the flybridge leads straight to the foredeck. It's certainly a bonus if you are short-handed, or operating the boat all on your own.

You can synchro the twin diesel throttles or work them independently to turn the boat as needed. No bow thrusters were fitted on the assumption the wide-spaced engines will deliver close-quarter control.

While the general market trend in motor cruisers is to one-level steering, the beauty of the elevated Aquila helm position is you have a better view for docking, or if navigating through Queensland reefs.

On the test day we were protected from the rain by the optional fibreglass hardtop and optional zip-up vinyl clears. A Raymarine navigation display let us set courses on the big LCD chartplotter without needing to go below.

Another great feature of the bridge is direct stairway access to the foredeck. From here you can quickly walk to the bows, or down to the stern via the rear stairwell to the cockpit. It's certainly a bonus if you are short-handed, or operating the boat all on your own.

VERDICT - High volume, long range and accommodating If you ran Aquila at a slower, fuel-thrifty cruise speed, you could easily get a 600nm range on the standard 1100-litre fuel tankage. Or stretch that to 1000nm with the optional 1460-litre fuel tankage.

Aquila delivers all those other cat benefits like high stability, roomy decks and the ability to moor in shallow waters. No wonder quite a few lookers at the 2016 Sydney Boat Show debut were ex-sailing types.

Now operating as a charter boat in the Whitsundays with Cumberland Yacht Charters , the Aquila 44 will see even more traffic aboard. But the powercat has the space to handle a crowd and class-leading access to all its deck living areas.

The size of the Aquila 44 is apparent alongside the dock. She is a seriously big craft and definitely suitable for permanent onboard living, especially with that full-beam forward stateroom with en suite and office. Beam me up and let's head north.

LIKES >> Fuel economy and long cruising range >> Massive size owner's stateroom >> Rear galley and cockpit bar

NOT SO MUCH >> Front bridge door needs better water/wind sealing >> Lacks slotted glass/bottle racks in galley area >> Low step across saloon floor can annoy

Aquila 44 Power Catamaran Yacht Review

Performance

Before she was open for sale, two varieties were tested; the two exhibited same characteristics with slight difference in speed. The wide bow 44 paced at 12 knots with 3200 on the rpm gauge, whereas the slim bow went 8.9 knots with the same rotation. The wide bow has some three degrees running attitude at 3000rpm, occasionally dropping to two degrees.

In a nutshell, the wide bow 44 is more advantageous than the slim, turning vigorously, enjoying the push it gets from the Volvo Penta doubles.

Engineering

A firm engineering from Sino-Eagle in China with the hull and deck interfaced with a blister resistant vinyl resin, making an optimum strength lamination. In order to prevent shrinking and leaks, all centre beams and finishing on the glass is made of glass, similarly, gelcoat is used to prevent other time caused degradation and UV related chalking.

The glasses used on the windows are all shatterproof; there is a divider at the forward of the sponson and hull. All accessories are easily accessed; the filter, the Spectra watermaker and the Racor fuel-water separators, they are all affixed to the sideboard, essentially tallied with two-inch noise insulators.

There is plenty of space on the Aquila 44; a cockpit, galley and relaxation lounge that is a spherical with a credenza with folding chairs on the other side. Under deck, three staterooms with shower fittings in each one. On the aft spread, a grill, mini bar and straight-backed chairs. Amidship, another set of chairs for the utilisation of helmsman. A railed passage stretches to the bow. According to Lex Raas, president of the marketing charter, she is a unique product.

The Aquila 44 is a power catamaran designed for comfortable cruising. Its three stateroom lay-out provides gobs of privacy, the catamaran design means the boat is roomy and handles well, and it has the long distance slow-speed cruising abilities of a trawler. The new Aquila 44 power catamaran is a vessel tailor-made for partying in style.

DSC_2688_cmyk (Small)

But the most interesting part in this backgrounder concerns her hulls – which generated more than a few double takes in Sydney. The bows are fitted with underwater bulbs – common on largeships.  The cat is unquestionably the first medium-size recreational vessel I’ve seen equipped with them. So what’s with the bulbs? Turns out the first few 44s off the production line didn’t perform as hoped – both in terms of speed and fuel efficiency. So began a rigorous trial-and-error programme which ended with bulbs being added in front. This was an inspired tweak, with more than a few benefits. For a start, the extended waterline improved performance dramatically. Comparisons between a bulbless and bulbed 44 (both equipped with twin 225hp Volvo D4s) showed marginal improvements at low, displacement speeds (less than 10 knots). At 2,500rpm, for example, the bulbed cat registered 8.3 knots, only 0.3 knots more than the unbulbed sistership. But the difference became much more significant as they approached planing speed. The bulbed cat delivered 12.4 knots at 3,200 rpm, 3.5 knots faster than her unmodified sister. And at WOT the difference was even more pronounced: some 16.1 knots for the bulbed 44, versus 9.4 knots for her sister. Our review cat (20 tonnes, 16 tonnes lightship) is equipped with gruntier engines: twin 300hp Volvos mated to V-drives. The Raymarine HybridTouch chartplotter presented the engine data in clear, easily-digestible bites. At six knots – around a very lumpy Sydney harbour – the Volvos were ticking over at 1,150rpm and between them consuming 5.9 litres/hour. At cruise speed (17-18 knots and 2,800 rpm) consumption increased to 76 litres/hour and at WOT (23 knots/3,200 rpm) that climbed to 79 litres/hour. She carries 1,150 litres of diesel in two tanks, with an additional 350-litre reserve tank. So depending on the urgency of your next appointment, you could eke quite a distance from those engines. And using the Volvo data on the chartplotter, you should be able to “plan” the speed of your journey and its necessary pit stops fairly easily. The 44’s also available with 375hp Yanmars which, I’m told, deliver a top speed of 25 knots. Though Yanmar is one of my favourite engine brands, I’d struggle to argue persuasively for the upgrade.

Marine Max Charter 443 running and lifestyle in Miami, FL.

I hate to say this, but perfectly-located though the helm station is, it’s almost irrelevant in the context of the flybridge’s party potential. The hotspot is the BBQ and wet bar just behind the helm station, complete with ice-box. And then there are the well-padded settees – port, starboard, either side of the helm, with a large U-shaped settee and table further aft. The area will accommodate – and seat – 20 guests with ease. With Abba blaring from the high-end Fusion stereo system (I lost count of the speakers mounted around the vessel), I predict the cat will field regular visits from Noise Control. The flybridge’s smartest piece of design, though, is its dualaccess. Flybridges are often a sticking point with crowds because usually there is only one access point – an internal staircase. This cat has its internal staircase from the saloon, but there is also a second, forward access, leading down from the front of the flybridge to the foredeck. This creates an excellent “flow” through the flybridge, and avoids the typical bottleneck that plagues single access designs. Note that the flybridge BBQ is electric. In fact, the entire vessel runs a combination of 12-volt DC and 240-volt AC. The owner doesn’t like gas. So this cat has a 10.4kVa generator, a 5,000kW inverter and 800 amp-hours of batteries. The galley below has an induction hob, surrounded by Corian work surfaces, fridge/ freezer, cooker and a stainless steel microwave oven. Aesthetically, the cat presents well. I like the recessed LED strip lighting in the ceiling, the large TV that disappears into its locker on the starboard side of the saloon at the push of a button, and the comfortable living around the saloon table and settee. The cat’s fully equipped with heating and A/C. I enjoyed the Aquila 44. She’s different, unusual and above all, a fun boat. For those who prefer to march to their own drums, her attributes offer a definite element of the non-conformist. With her height she’s difficult to miss, but if you’re looking for her in a crowded marina I’d suggest you just follow the music. They might even invite you to join the party.

The spacious cockpit is uncluttered but has plenty of seating. The cockpit sole is covered in SeaDek. The bolster-equipped helm chairs are a decent size and proved comfortable even in the lumpy conditions we experienced.

The new Aquila 44 is a power catamaran with the performance of a trawler, the comfort of a luxury condo, and the privacy of a much bigger boat.
