2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Cabriolet Review: Come Sail Away

With the amount of change in the automotive industry, it’s worth considering the last of certain types of cars.

Lamborghini and Ferrari are about to build their last purely-petrol-powered V12s. There’s just one V6-powered, front-drive family sedan left: the Camry . Want a naturally-aspirated V8 four-door sedan? Your choices are either the Lexus IS 500, the Chrysler 300, or the Dodge Charger. Slim pickings.

Consider the convertible. Now refine that brain-based search to exclude two-seaters (Miata, Boxster), pony cars (Mustang, Camaro), or cars where no actual adult can fit in the second row (911, LC). Chop it down further by disqualifying cars with sporting intentions.

What you’re left with is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Cabriolet. This mid-sizer has no direct competitors, and almost certainly sells in tiny numbers. It’s also a consummate cruiser for you and three friends, and despite some inherent flaws, should be celebrated for just that.

What’s new?

The entire E-Class family saw a round of updates for 2021, from sedan, to coupe, to wagon , and this here convertible. In typical Merc fashion, the exterior changes are subtle: tweaked headlight shapes, a switch from a “grin” to a “frown” grille shape, and a smattering of new color options. Overall this is still a smooth shape, elegant and simple in a way that’s remarkably rare in today’s over-styled scene. The folks in Stuttgart aren’t reinventing the wheel here.

They did ditch the old turbocharged V6, though. Now there’s the delightful inline-six, the same one AutoGuide praised in the E450 All-Terrain wagon earlier this year. Horsepower and torque are up, to 362 and 369, respectively, which is all fine and dandy. There’s also a mild-hybrid system at play, which tosses its own 21 hp and 184 lb-ft into the pot for short bursts.

Inside, not much has changed, with a new steering wheel being the main attraction—or annoyance (more on that later). The cloth lid can disappear in a little less than 20 seconds, and it can be operated at speeds up to 30 mph (50 km/h). There is the small matter of the gorgeous interior spec this tester comes with, though.

This, dear friends, is Macchiato Beige and Yacht Blue, but we can just shorten it down to The Perfect Spec. With the matching dark blue fabric top, this particular Silver Arrow oozes class. I’m sure it’d look right at home cruising along a winding road in the south of France. But it’s mid-autumn in Canada, which means a week that encompasses both shorts-friendly weather and the hint of snow.

Top-up, the Merc is a well-insulated cocoon, protecting occupants from the outside world. More of the commotion does make it inside compared to a tin-top—particularly around the C-pillars—but it’s a far cry from what you’d call noisy. Visibility is naturally worse too, though the rear window is larger than most.

I’m not going to let plummeting mercury get in the way of a good cruise, though. As much as possible, the E450 operates al fresco , with its various methods of heating employed depending on the situation. The heated steering wheel is only fine, but the seats toast up nicely. Airscarf is delightfully OTT, in-headrest vents keeping napes warm. Turbulence is kept at bay with the combination of a powered rear deflector, and a deployable spoiler at the top of the windshield. Up to highway speeds, conversations are possible without yelling. Your hair may fare worse.

The interior is standard modern Merc: if it ain’t broke and all that. A quartet of of aero-inspired vents dominate the center of the dashboard, with primary climate controls just below. Every switch has a pleasant, consistent action, and fit and finish is superb. The front seats are supremely comfortable, built for comfort over speed. Rear-seat passengers are well taken care of too, though it still is a tight fit. I installed two family members back there, and I think the hour drive was about as much as I’d want to submit any adults to with the top up.

Mercedes’ MBUX remains one of the best infotainment systems on the market, all because the brand believes in the importance of options. Sure, driver or passenger can poke and swipe at the big 12.3-inch screen for everything they need. There’s also the rotary dial-slash-mouse contraption on the center console.

As the driver, my preferred input method is the little touchpad on the upper right spoke of the steering wheel. This used to be a flush, contrasting material, and it was better for it. The new setup is harder to be accurate with, requiring multiple “bites” to get where you want to go. The left pad, used for the other 12.3-inch screen ahead of the driver, is the same story.

Similarly, the touch-sensitive controls for the volume and adaptive cruise control feel a step too far. Continuously tapping seems the best option.

The rest of the MBUX experience is still great. The menus are clear and easy to navigate. Response times are near-instant. The graphics are crisp. It’s just the one input method that feels like a step back.

This tester comes with the up-level driver assist package ($1,700 / $2,700 CAD). While it still stings that much of this optional tech is standard on mainstream models, there’s no arguing with how well it all works. For instance, the adaptive cruise control is very smooth when altering its speed, and flicking the indicator has it changing lanes flawlessly. It also uses navigation info to automatically adjust speeds for upcoming corners.

Prod the engine start button and the creamy inline-six awakes up ahead. You know because the digital dials tell you as much; otherwise, there’s little sonic or vibratory hints. Even just a bit of throttle reveals a wave of torque, as the six cylinders work in concert with the EQ Boost system, essentially eliminating turbo lag. Feed in more throttle and the combustion engine drops the shy routine, with a clean, crisp exhaust note. Truth be told, it’s not necessary to rev the E450 high, both because it feels distinctly out of character and because it puts in its best work in the mid-range. Still, a 5.2-second dash to 62 mph (100 km/h) ain’t nothing to sneer at.

Mercedes’ nine-speed auto is the right match for the engine, with smooth, quick shifts on its own. It responds well enough to the wheel-mounted pedals, but just like hunting the redline, using them feels so gauche. Same goes for the driving modes: this is a heavy car, with the 4MATIC AWD gubbins underneath and the assorted structural reinforcements necessary for droptop duty. So while the engine and transmission perk up in Sport mode, it never feels like the E has its heart set on sniffing out apexes. The brake pedal is firm and positive, as well.

The suspension contributes to this wafting feel. The E Cab is soft, allowing it to glide over rough roads even on the upsized 20-inch wheels. Rougher tarmac can cause some pogoing from back to front, but the structure always feels stiff. Larger bumps do elicit angry noises from the wheel arches and upset the in-cabin equilibrium. Perhaps the optional air suspension would smooth things further still.

Steering effort and feedback are both light, regardless of drive mode. It’s not that the E isn’t interested in having fun; it’s just more interested in making sure you’re not stressed. About a single thing.

You won’t be fussing over fuel usage, that’s for sure. Even with 362 hp and a curb weight to rival a small condo, the E450 Cabriolet is rated at 25 mpg combined (9.3 L/100 km). I saw it top 30 mpg (7.8 L/100 km) on the highway.

What’s the competition?

Allow me to make it easy: nothing. Not directly, anyway.

Okay, you could look at the slightly smaller BMW M440i Cabriolet. It’s the tourer of that family, but it’s still distinctly sharper in ride and handling than the cruise-friendly Merc. Want even more of an edge? BMW will sell you an M4 droptop, complete with AWD. There’s the Audi S5 too, but same story: smaller, more affordable, more overtly sporty.

Ah yes, affordability. I hope you’re not looking for any here. The E450 Cabriolet starts from $75,500, including destination ($88,900 CAD, before freight). Even this lightly-optioned example adds another $10,000 to the bottom line, bringing it up to $85,470 (around $102,000 CAD). There’s just not much at this price point that offers the same mix of space, grace, and pace. Even the BMW 8 Series convertible starts a further 10 grand richer.

Mercedes offers a sportier droptop E53, but I’d argue that’s a contradictory model. Want a sporty Merc? Get the coupe, or a 63 model.

Verdict: 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Cabriolet Review

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Cabriolet surprised me. It’s a fixer: the Cab smoothes over any problems or stress points that may arise, letting the driver soak up the scenery.

It remains a niche offering, and not a cheap one, either. What the E450 Cab offers is a very particular set of skills, ones no other car on the market offers in this exact mix. If your tastes align, there’s nothing else that will do.

The E53 is the AMG version of Merc’s mid-sizer. It uses the same basic 3.0-liter engine, but with more power. The chassis is also tuned for more athletic handling..

The German brand introduced the Manufaktur customization range for the Mercedes-Benz EQS fully electric sedan, which was previously available on models such as S-class, the G-Class SUV and the Mercedes AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The Manufaktur Options Elevate The Interior Of The EQS Sedan

Just like the S-class, the EQS sedan deserved its own interior customization package. Starting from about $11,700, you can choose interior options for your car. You can combine the regular EQS with an AMG line interior, or opt for a EQS from Mercedes-AMG.

The EQS Manufaktur interior leather creates true feeling of luxury experience, nappa leather to be precise, which has a unique softness and undergoes a special tanning process. Both the front and rear seats are lined with nappa leather and quilted in a diamond pattern.

Finished and lined in nappa leather are also the door armrests, the center console, and the lower part of the instrument panel. The steering wheel is covered by hand in nappa leather, two-colored, and coordinated in color with the rest of the interior. Even the high-pile floor mats have edges lined with nappa leather, with the German brand paying attention to every slightest detail. Both the floor mats and headrests are embroidered with the famous three-pointed star, or with the prestigious Mercedes-AMG logo.

The Manufaktur also includes illuminated door sill trims with lettering and a special Manufaktur pattern. The center console has a cursive-script inscription of "Manufaktur" in a shiny chrome coating.

The Manufaktur interior leather colors include: yacht blue, tobacco brown, mystic red, rose gray, and deep white.

For the standard interior with black upholstery, you can choose the Emblem Package with Mercedes logo embroidery on the high-pile floor mats and on the head restraint cushions.

The Special Exterior Package Of The EQS Luxury Sedan

There are many choices when it comes to the exterior of the new EQS: you can first opt for an Electric Art exterior, or an AMG line exterior, along with the standard one.

There are countless Manufaktur color options, ranging from $1,600 to $7,900. Regular Manufaktur colors include hyacinth red metallic and diamond white bright.

The special Manufaktur colors will cost you more, but some of them have a magno finish, meaning they are more resistant to minor scratches. The special Manufaktur colors include, but aren't limited to: night black magno, Côte d'Azur light blue metallic, vintage blue non-metallic, and Kalahari gold magno.

The wheel options include four sizes: 19'', 20'', 21'' and 22''. The AMG line exterior offers beautiful multi-spoke wheels, including vintage mesh wheels as well as sleek 5-spoke designs. Depending on the package, you might need to pay an additional price for some of the wheel types.

The German brand offers, besides regular tires, sports tires for those who want better traction and steering precision.

How The German Brand Hand-Crafts Each Manufaktur EQS Sedan

Luxury vehicles often require handmade details that take a long time to finish: the EQS Manufaktur package is no exception. The ultimate build time depends on your choice of equipment.

The Mercedes-Benz online configurator allows you to build your custom EQS , starting from the electric powertrain option, through the interior and exterior, ending with additional equipment and the choice to order your customized car. Once you place an order, you will receive an approximate timeline for the production and delivery of your car.

There are five electric powertrain options: the slowest having a 0-60 m/ph time of 6.0 seconds and the fastest a mere 3.8 seconds. Keep in mind that the sportier powertrains have shorter ranges. The top-performance Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ outputs an impressive 649 horsepower, but has a range of 350 miles, a whole 113 less than the maximum range EQS 450+.

Depending on the level of luxury and effort it takes to produce the vehicle, Manufaktur is divided into three levels: Manufaktur (standard), Manufaktur signature and Manufaktur custom.

The first two require no additional time. Manufaktur custom, however, features Manufaktur label and badge stitching and a multitude of other modifications.

The price can add up quickly if you choose more premium options and packages, but if you can afford it and want it, the EQS Manufaktur package won't let you down. With the EQS already being a super-luxury, fully electric sedan , the Manufaktur options will add a personal touch to a car that you will never forget. And each time you park and lock your EQS sedan, you'll give it a second glance enjoying the special Manufaktur color and finish.

New Mercedes-Benz ‘MANUFAKTUR’ Label: Exclusive Paint Finishes and Other High-Quality Embellishments

The Mercedes-Benz brand represents luxury and fascination unlike any other. The design, styling and different equipment lines help to express the personal lifestyles of various customers. With the new “MANUFAKTUR” label, Mercedes-Benz is taking another step forward to cater to customers’ growing desire for more individuality, by enhancing the existing product portfolio with additional exclusivity and luxury: select materials which are predominantly processed by hand, exclusive paint finishes and high-quality embellishments in the interior offer a wide range of options for an individual appearance. A corresponding program has already been available for the G-Class for several years: the “G manufaktur” presents its own selection of materials and colors specially adapted to the vehicle architecture. With the introduction of the new MANUFAKTUR label, Mercedes-Benz now also offers a corresponding customization program for other model series such as the CLS, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe and the S-Class, as well as the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.

Buying a new vehicle means making numerous decisions at the same time. After all, your car is always part of your personal everyday life, and an expression of your own lifestyle. In addition to a choice of engine, paint finishes, interior equipment and comfort features, Mercedes-Benz customers are offered many options with which they can tailor their dream vehicle to their needs. For those who are also looking for something unique in terms of paintwork, leather upholstery and interior design, Mercedes-Benz now offers further, exclusive customization options for selected model series with the new MANUFAKTUR label. These combine luxurious craftsmanship, the highest quality materials and fascinating design.

Mercedes-Benz customers can expect an ambience characterized by an equally aesthetic and extraordinary color concept, the finest materials, comfort and exclusive trim elements in piano lacquer or wood. The excellence of the craftsmanship is visible and tangible in the embroidery, the leatherwork and the carefully applied trim elements. The attention to detail is particularly highlighted in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, through the chrome lettering MANUFAKTUR badge on the center console, and as a discreet embroidery on the rear window shelf.

One of the most expressive features of a vehicle is its paint finish. The MANUFAKTUR range offers an exclusive selection of signature paint finishes – both silky matte and high-gloss metallic, or rich non-metallic colors. Some of these colors are reminiscent of Mercedes-Benz history and classic cars. MANUFAKTUR Graphite Grey was part of the color range until the early 1960s, and adorned the legendary 300 SL “Gullwing” as a special color. MANUFAKTUR Graphite Metallic and MANUFAKTUR Olive Metallic were among the exclusive exterior options in the 1980s, while MANUFAKTUR China Blue was a popular choice for the E-Class (W123) and the S-Class (W126) in the 1990s. The trend towards a matte finish is reflected in fine, elegant finishes such as MANUFAKTUR Cashmere White Magno and MANUFAKTUR Kalahari Gold Magno, or the sporty MANUFAKTUR Night Black Magno. All MANUFAKTUR paint finishes exude high quality, and underline the fascination of Mercedes-Benz vehicles and their dynamic lines.

High-quality nappa leather with unique contrasting color concepts characterizes the ambience in the interior. This is where the classic MANUFAKTUR Deep White/Black Exclusive Nappa comes back to life, as does the iconic, MANUFAKTUR Pastel Yellow/Black Exclusive Nappa, which was available for the S-Class until 2012. Additional curated combinations with black are MANUFAKTUR Nut Brown/Black, MANUFAKTUR Truffle Brown/Black or MANUFAKTUR Yacht Blue/Black, for the highest individual elegance. The intricate diamond- pattern stitching on the seats further enhances the exclusive interior finish, and ensures particularly pleasant seating comfort. The MANUFAKTUR upholstery package also includes tone-on-tone additional cushions with an embroidered logo – depending on the model and equipment requirements, either the Mercedes-Benz star, the double-M rhombus of Mercedes-Maybach or Mercedes-AMG lettering in the floor mats. If the customer chooses one of the optional Emblem packages available for the S-Class and the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the trademarks can also be embroidered in gold or platinum to further enhance the luxurious ambience.

In combination with the selected upholstery, additional visual highlights such as the handcrafted two-toned MANUFAKTUR Leather Steering Wheel are available to further enhance the feel of a tailored interior providing customers with additional refined components for a coherent and consistent, high-quality overall impression.

A unique highlight that underlines the brand presence is the MANUFAKTUR surround lighting with animated projection. When the doors are opened, animated Mercedes-Benz or Mercedes-Maybach patterns using sophisticated LCD technology light up and elegantly illuminate both the front and rear entry areas. This special lightshow is made possible by four LCD projectors embedded in the front and rear doors, which deactivate themselves after ten minutes.

The MANUFAKTUR program is available for the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the Mercedes-Benz CLS and S- Class, and the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. For the CLS, customers can choose between various paint finishes, including an attractive shade of blue called MANUFAKTUR Cote d’Azur Light Blue Metallic, as well as signature leather variants. Thoughtful elements also include a leather steering wheel, and floor mats to match the interior. Various paint and upholstery finishes are available on the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe that focuses on providing an even higher degree of personal choice. New colors emphasize either the sporty or the luxurious side of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe – for example the new combination of Exclusive Nappa Leather in Titanium Grey Pearl / Black with contrasting topstitching in Yellow, or fine Exclusive Nappa Leather in Auburn Brown / Black in the STYLE finish

The MANUFAKTUR label will be extended to other model series in the coming years. In the future, selected sub-brands such as AMG, Maybach and EQ will also be available with MANUFAKTUR paint finishes and equipment packages. With the introduction of the MANUFAKTUR label, the previous individualization portfolio and label “designo” will be replaced.
