A masterpiece of modern design, the 262.47ft /80m Custom motor yacht EXCELLENCE was launched by Abeking & Rasmussen in 2019. Winch Design is responsible for her futuristic exterior design and contemporary interior styling.
With her innovative features and host of cutting-edge amenities, EXCELLENCE is a superyacht worthy of her title. She is a charter platform designed for the discerning, and promises a superyacht vacation in the lap of luxury.
Exterior Design
One of the defining characteristics of EXCELLENCE is her unique exterior design, which has been compared to a spaceship. Penned by Winch, her iconic profile features a reverse bow and sharp lines which work to blend the hull with the superstructure to create a unique and eye-catching silhouette. The expanses of mirrored glazing across her superstructure further add to her visionary good looks. The final effect is not only attractive to the outside viewer, but the wide sections of glass also provide stunning vistas over the surroundings. Abeking & Rasmussen have stated that glass has never been installed in these dimensions on one of their superyachts before, marking an impressive first for the German yard.
Interior Design
Winch has ensured a perfect harmony between the yacht’s innovative exteriors and her cool and contemporary interior design. Her social spaces are infused with natural light, with a triple-height glass atrium taking centre stage. The space serves as the social hub during charters, providing an unparalleled setting for enjoying the company of the entire charter party while still feeling connected to the outside world. The motor yacht is also home to a tiered cinema for indulging in movie nights at sea, as well as a spa with sauna and well-equipped gym facilities. All of which these sumptuous features can be found on the main deck.
Guest Accommodation
EXCELLENCE provides accommodation for 12 guests in seven cabins. Each cabin is well-appointed, and benefits from its own individual colour palette.
The principal charter guest can take advantage of the owner’s deck, which has been designed to provide the finest in privacy, comfort and luxury living. The cabin boasts an outdoor terrace with jacuzzi, sun lounging area and private office to offer everything a guest might need right at their fingertips.
The owner’s suite also represents a feat of incredible engineering, as it is partially encased in floor-to-ceiling mirrored glass to provide 180-degree views over the surroundings. The largest panel measures a staggering 6m in length, and has been designed to offer a totally unobstructed connection to the world outside.
Onboard Comfort & Entertainment
On a private yacht charter on board EXCELLENCE, guests can enjoy relaxing and unwinding as well as entertaining and socialising. On the aft deck, a large pool with swim-up bar is a great spot for getting together and having a dip or a drink.
Those looking to get closer to the sea can do so, thanks to a spacious beach club which benefits from a wide sea terrace, bathing steps and a large swim platform. A large locker of toys and tender can also be accessed from here; among her range of water accessories, EXCELLENCE boasts Seabobs, sail boats, inflatable toys, jet-skis, paddleboards and scuba-diving equipment. She also plays host to two limousine tenders for the ultimate elegant arrivals and departurers
The sundeck is also a lovely spot for topping up your tan, and is complete with a deck jacuzzi and multiple lounging areas.
Performance & Range
Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she offers greater on-board space and is more stable when at anchor thanks to her full-displacement hull. Powered by twin MTU engines, she comfortably cruises at 13 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 17 knots with a range of up to 6,300 nautical miles from her 150,000 litre fuel tanks at 14 knots. An advanced stabilisation system on board reduces the side-to-side roll of the yacht and promises guests exceptional comfort levels at anchor or when underway.
Excellence knows a thing or two about fun on the water, with an extensive selection of action packed water toys and accessories for you and your guests to enjoy whilst on charter. Principle among these is a Angeboat RS 200 sailboat to bring out the explorer in you. Guests can experience the thrill and adventure of riding one of the two Yamaha VX cruiser WaveRunners. Another excellent feature are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. If that isn't enough Excellence also features a seabob, kayaks, scuba diving equipment, inflatable water toys and kneeboards. When it comes to Tenders, Excellence has you covered - with three tenders, including a 9.8m/32'2" Hogdon Limo Tender.
Why Charter Excellence
EXCELLENCE has been custom-built for an owner with a wealth of experience owning charter yachts. They have also been vastly successful on the charter fleet, and no doubt EXCELLENCE will follow in their footsteps.
Excellence and her crew are available for charter this summer for cruising within the Mediterranean. She is already accepting bookings this winter for cruising in the Caribbean.
With its luxurious interiors, vast array of onboard facilities and a highly-trained and professional crew, a luxury yacht vacation onboard motor yacht Excellence promises to be nothing short of spectacular.

Satellite images show Kim Jong Un's waterslide yacht in action, while North Korea struggles with famine and COVID-19
- Satellite images caught the movements of Kim Jong Un's luxury yacht.
- North Korea is undergoing food shortages and struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The amusement-park-themed yacht can be a good indicator of Kim's whereabouts, NK News reported .
Kim Jong Un's 260-foot luxury yacht has been spotted moving toward his private compound as North Korea struggles with famine and COVID-19.
Satellite-imaging company Planet Labs captured pictures of the yacht, as well as a second 200-foot yacht, moored at the private beach near Kim's palace at Wonsan on July 12.
The images were published by the South Korean outlet NK News , which marked up the images on its website. The weather around Wonsan in July is warm, and the temperature on Tuesday was 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
A tweet from May about the yacht's movements included an image of the yacht.
—NK NEWS (@nknewsorg) May 26, 2021
The larger of the yachts is constructed as a floating amusement park, with a double waterslide, an Olympic-size pool, and a multistory lounge, the outlet reported.
It is unclear who is using the luxury boats, which have been lent to friends and family in the past.
The yachts' movements coincide with days the leader did not make public appearances and can be a reasonably reliable indicator of his movements, NK News reported.
In April last year, during an extensive withdrawal from public view, Kim's 200-foot yacht was spotted moving around the same spot.
Less than a month ago, Kim made a rare announcement. He said there was a "tense" situation with North Korea's food supply , which he attributed to typhoons in the past year. Food prices have skyrocketed, prompting one UN official to propose lifting sanctions in order to prevent mass starvation, Reuters reported .
The country also recently hinted at a COVID-19 surge, after Kim reshuffled his senior officials , blaming them for a "great crisis" in their response to the pandemic.

Mega Yacht vs Superyacht: Unraveling the Differences
13th oct 2023 by samantha wilson.
Superyacht vs. megayacht—the definitions are oft-debated, and industry professionals have yet to fully agree. But as yachts get bigger by the year it’s a subject that keeps evolving.
Is it based on size alone or also function? Is it yet another debate between proponents of the British language and that of the Americans? Here we’ll take a look at all the sides of the argument and see how what was once “I say tom-ah-to you say to-may-to” may, in fact, be on its way to an important and necessary definition in the superyacht world.
What is a Superyacht?
For as far back as we look, the marine industry has always defined boats and yachts, categorizing them by their main function or style. From center consoles to schooners, trawlers to catamarans, we have a category for them all. The term superyacht, however, has always been based predominantly on size—yachts over 80 feet to be precise—and of course they had to be luxurious, too. No-one is calling a 90-foot commercial fishing boat a superyacht, but a 90-foot luxury sportfishing model by Viking Yachts fits the bill just fine. The other major criteria to be classified as a superyacht—apart from being privately owned—is to have a full-time captain and crew (as opposed to the owner being the captain). The only true bottom line, however, is that the industry has long agreed that superyachts were the largest and most elite vessels in the world.
For examples of some of the most astounding private luxury yachts in the world check out the superyachts for sale on Rightboat. If you think purchasing a superyacht might be right for you some day, read our Top Tips on How to Buy a Superyacht and our article on Superyachts 101: All Your Questions Answered .
What is a Megayacht?
Here the definitions get trickier. Even the spelling isn’t fully agreed upon yet as some write mega yacht, others megayacht. For a long time, the term megayacht was the more common term for large luxury yachts in the United States, while in Europe they have always been superyachts. But that picture is certainly changing now, because of the emergence of some true behemoths of yachts.
A decade ago a 180-foot or 55-meter superyacht was considered big. These days, that superyacht is dwarfed by some gargantuan vessels ranging all the way up to the very largest private yacht in the world, Azzam , at 590 feet in length. It seems logical therefore that we need a different classification to separate a 35-meter superyacht from a 350-meter one. And the term megayacht has fit nicely into that space. While industry insiders are not all aligned, most categorize a megayacht as being larger than a superyacht—some say over 260 feet (80 meters), others classify a megayacht as over 200 feet (60 meters). But as we’ll see below, gross tonnage, the crew and guests, as well as safety, maintenance, and management also play a role in this new classification.
The world’s megayachts are a sight to behold and are often the driving force of the yachting world’s innovation. Some of the most famous include Eclipse at 533 feet (162.5m) one of the first megayachts built back in 2010, Dubai at 531 feet (162m), Blue at 525 feet (160m), and A+ at 483 feet (147.25m). The largest sailing yacht is Sailing Yacht A at 468 feet (142.81m). For more examples check out the megayachts for sale on Rightboat.
Superyacht vs Megayacht: What Are the Main Differences?
Megayacht vs superyacht size and length.
For those using the term megayacht as a classification of yacht larger than a superyacht, the generally accepted size, as mentioned, is a private luxury yacht over either 200 or 260 feet (60 or 80m). But actually it’s more than just length that is playing a deciding role. Gross tonnage in shipping dictates how a vessel is operated, and any vessels over 3000GT will have a whole different set of regulations. Some yachts over 200 feet long are above 3000GT and almost all yachts over 260 feet exceed 3000GT, so it seems logical that this definition stands. There are exceptions, such as the 278.8 feet (85m) Victorious , for example, whose gross tonnage is 2,291GT. While certainly a superyacht, is she a megayacht? Based on overall length, we’d have to say yes, but the captain’s qualifications, the number of guests she can accommodate, and the safety and management regulations will be quite different.
Megayacht vs superyacht crew and guests
When talking about yachts over 3000GT, there are many operational regulations that change considerably above and below 3000GT, especially the captain’s qualifications. Instead of just 12 guests, they are able to accommodate many more overnight passengers and the guest-to-crew ratios are greatly increased. In essence, a private yacht over 3000GT will need to be classified and run as though it is a commercial vessel with regards the captain, crew, and passengers.
Does the type of crew makes a difference to the classification? Yes, a yacht over 3000GT is more likely to have masseuses, dive instructors, personal trainers, watersports instructors, and Michelin chefs, but that doesn’t mean superyachts can’t also have them (and there are many that do).
Megayacht vs superyacht cost
It makes sense that the larger the yacht, the more it will cost, but the price tag isn’t necessarily a defining characteristic of whether a yacht is a superyacht or a megayacht. In fact, the most expensive superyacht ever built is History Supreme , worth $4.8 billion. What is most surprising here though is that History Supreme is ‘just’ 100 feet long. It is, among other extravagances, inlaid with 24-carat gold, which helps explain the price tag, but it’s a perfect example of how cost doesn’t define megayacht status. As a comparison, estimates of Azzam ‘s cost are just under $600 million to build. Having said that, there are industry insiders who believe that an extremely high level of service and facilities can raise a superyacht into the megayacht realm. Read on to find out which are the most expensive yachts in the world?
Superyachts, Megayachts, and Gigayachts?
Before we’ve even come to a final consensus on the definition of a megayacht, we encounter the term gigayacht. To look at the possible need for yet another classification we go back to our example of Azzam at 590 feet long. Should an almost-600-foot ultra-luxury private yacht be categorized the same as a 260-foot yacht? Many in the industry think not, that it provides a better categorization of the biggest of the big yachts in an industry producing ever-larger designs. Others roll their eyes, however. Whether the terms mega- and giga are just marketing spinners or a genuine need for classification of the ever-growing luxury yachts being launched is, for now, a case of “Watch this space.”

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily
Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.
The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .
The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.
The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.
“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.
Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.
Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.
“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”
Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.
On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.
“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .
The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.
“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.
What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.
“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”
The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.
Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.
“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”
The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.
Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .
Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.
Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.
In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.
“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .
Henry Austin reported from London and Corky Siemaszko from New York City.
Henry Austin is a senior editor for NBC News Digital based in London.
Corky Siemaszko is a senior reporter for NBC News Digital.

Everything We Know About the Final Moments of the Passengers Who Died in the Sicily Yacht Tragedy
Five of the seven victims had been "searching for air pockets" as the luxury yacht sank on Aug. 19, authorities said

The luxury yacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday, Aug. 19, resulted in the deaths of six passengers and one crew member.
Less than a week later, on Saturday, Aug. 24, Ambrogio Cartosio, the Chief Prosecutor of Termini Imerese, announced that Italian authorities were launching a manslaughter investigation into the sinking , and he identified all of the victims.
The seven victims who died in the tragic sinking were yacht chef Recaldo Thomas; British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah Lynch; Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda ; and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy .
As authorities attempt to answer questions about what exactly led to the sinking of the 183-foot British-flagged vessel — which went down during a "violent storm,” the Italian Coast Guard previously told PEOPLE in a statement — here is what we currently know about the victims’ final moments.
FAMILY HANDOUT/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock
During the Aug. 24 press conference, Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra, head of the Palermo Fire Brigade, revealed that as the Bayesian began going down early Monday morning, “It was quite clear that people were trying to hide in the cabins.”
“In the left-hand side, we found the first 5 bodies in the left-hand side cabins, and the final body on the right-hand side,” Fiandra said. “We found them on the highest part of the ship, which was closer to the surface. The vessel had three cabins on each side.”
The five victims, who "took refuge” on the luxury yacht’s left side, had been "searching for air pockets" in a final attempt at survival," he added.

As for why the victims were in the cabins in the first place, Giovanni Costantino — who leads The Italian Sea Group, the company that now owns Perini Navi, which built the Bayesian back in 2008 — told CNN it was due to a “very long sum of errors."
"Everything that has been done reveals a very long sum of errors,” he said in his interview, translated from Italian. “The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor. And then why didn't the crew know about the incoming disturbance?”

Prior to the storm and subsequent sinking, some of the luxury yacht’s passengers were in celebration mode. They had been commemorating the recent acquittal of one of the victims, Lynch, 59, a source close to the survivors previously told PEOPLE.
Two months ago, Lynch was acquitted on all counts of a series of fraud and conspiracy charges he faced in the U.S. after a years-long legal battle dating back to 2018.

He celebrated the acquittal on the Bayesian with his daughter and his wife, Angela Bacare, who was rescued along with 14 others on board.
Also celebrating were Morvillo, 59, who represented Lynch in the case, and Bloomer, 70, who was a close friend of the tech entrepreneur.

PORTICELLO, Sicily -- Specialist cave divers working in 12-minute underwater shifts were searching Tuesday for six missing passengers and crew, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, believed to be in the submerged wreck of a luxury yacht that was slammed by a powerful storm and swiftly sank off Sicily.
The sleek yacht, named the Bayesian, was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers when it suddenly sank near the Mediterranean island that is part of Italy at about 4 a.m. on Monday. One body has been recovered and 15 people survived.
Fire rescue officials have said the six believed to remain in the sailboat's hull will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage.
Here's what we know so far about the sinking and those who were on board.
Italian civil protection officials believe a sudden and fierce storm that battered the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday whipped up a waterspout in the exact spot where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian was moored.
Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht moored nearby, said he saw the Bayesian during the storm but when the wild weather passed it was gone and he saw only a red flare lighting the night sky, the Italian news agency ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported.
Borner and one of his crew boarded their tender and found a lifeboat carrying 15 people, some of them injured. They took them aboard their yacht and alerted the coast guard.
Rescue authorities said the wreck was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) about a half mile offshore of the picturesque fishing village of Porticello.
Among the missing is 59-year-old tech tycoon Mike Lynch , sometimes described as the British Bill Gates. Lynch was acquitted in June of all charges in a U.S. fraud trial linked to the $11 billion sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.
A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his name running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.
Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was reportedly among the missing. His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived.
Among others still missing Tuesday, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. Morvillo was regarded as an elite defense lawyer and was also a federal prosecutor in New York after 9/11.
Also missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy. He is the former head of the Autonomy audit committee and testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial.
Bloomer was also chair of the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London market.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement.
Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.
The Dutch foreign ministry said a Dutch man survived. The ministry, citing privacy, did not release his identity.
One body was recovered on Monday, identified as the on-board chef.
The Bayesian was a luxury yacht built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Nav. It was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) aluminum mast — one of the world’s tallest. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.
Its registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., based on the Isle of Man, according to online maritime database Equasis. Lynch’s wife is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.
The yacht's name is an apparent reference to “Bayesian inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Autonomy.
Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water and can happen when a storm moves across warm water.
According to the U.S. National Ocean Service, there are two types of waterspouts — fair-weather and tornadic.
Tornadic waterspouts “have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning,” the service says on its website.
While scientists haven’t attributed the specific event to climate change, average monthly surface temperatures have been at record highs for months . Hotter air can hold more moisture, making heavier storms more likely.
Sicily has been baking under intense heat this summer , and the United Nations’ panel of climate change experts notes the Mediterranean Sea is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with warming rates roughly 20% higher than the global average.
Experts say it is extraordinarily rare for a luxury sailboat of this size to capsize due to weather events.
“This just doesn’t happen. You know, boats sink because things like keels fall off, or they run aground and breach the hull ... whereas just from a weather angle, a boat that big being pushed over on its side is absolutely extraordinary,” said Skip Novak, a lifelong sailor who has taken part in multiple round the world yacht races and written books about sailing.
Novak said he believed that strong gusts likely pushed the yacht over 90 degrees to its side, and the vessel did not recover because of the weight of the huge mast and because it was anchored. He suggested that internal doors were likely not closed, and water quickly poured in to sink the vessel.
“When you’re at anchor, even if it’s blowing with a storm in the Mediterranean, you rarely shut the whole boat down because nobody expects something like this to happen," Novak told The Associated Press. “So if the boat wasn’t completely watertight at the deck, you’d have flooding going in. It would take a couple minutes and that would be it."
As the search for the missing continues, authorities already have begun trying to piece together exactly what happened.
Prosecutors from the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation, as is normal in such events even when no suspects are identified. To date, they have not commented publicly.
The British Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo.
Corder reported from The Hague, Netherlands. Associated Press writer Sylvia Hui in London contributed to this report.

Among the most outrageous yachts ever built, Sailing Yacht A and Yas are top of the list. The polarizing designs are defined by their exteriors— A for its fortress aesthetic and the former navy frigate Yas for its dolphin-like appearance. Love them or loathe them, they break from conventional yacht design and show what can be done with a little fresh thinking. That’s exactly what concepts are intended to do, and some of the world’s most outrageous examples take it to the extreme.
“Yacht concepts drive human evolution in maritime adventure,” says Micca Ferrero, owner of ICON Yachts . “It is one of the oldest and purest forms of work, as humans have been preparing to take to the sea for centuries in search of a better world. Each concept carries a small part of our future at sea.”
But the concepts have gone beyond simple sea vessels. From the Airyacht, with its detachable upper blimp structure, to U-Boat Worx’s Nautilus that can travel underwater at 10 knots, superyachts are no longer limited to the surface. Shape, size, amenities and propulsion are all up for grabs, and some of the most eyebrow-raising examples pave the way for the yachts of tomorrow.
Here are 10 of our favorite outrageous yacht concepts ever launched.
Pangeos — The World’s Largest Floating Structure
Italian design studio Lazzarini is known for its far-fetched ideas, which include a swan-shaped yacht and floating seaports. Pangeos is its interpretation of the world’s largest floating structure. The 1,800-foot-long “terayacht” (which also measures 2,000 feet across at its widest point) is named after Pangea, a supercontinent that existed 335 million years ago. This Pangea is estimated to accommodate 60,000 guests. The premise is an emissions-free city that can sail around the world. Designed in the shape of a giant turtle clad in solar panels, the concept includes multiple structures with a rooftop shopping mall, restaurants, and houses. There are also gardens, pools, and a large beach club, as well as helipads, hangars and marinas to store helicopters, toys, and tenders. Pangeos is powered by nine electric motors of 16,800 hp each, with the “wings” drawing more power from the waves and wind. Lazzarini estimates the build cost would be $8 billion.
VY.01 — Standout Feature: Indoor Garden
Gardens and superyachts don’t typically mix. It can be challenging to keep plants alive at sea since gardening requires substantial care and resources. But that didn’t stop German architects 3deluxe from penning VY.01 , a low carbon-emission superyacht concept with a greenhouse and vegetable garden. Billed as a “paradisiacal biotope,” the concept catamaran focuses on onboard self-sufficiency. In addition to a hydrogen fuel-cell system and electric propulsion, the vessel has solar panels on the rooftop to generate clean energy for the seawater desalination system that provides water for the plants. Other features include large deck spaces, open-plan living, a saltwater pool, and a mini marina for tenders and toys.
Domus — Standout Feature: An Experimental Open Plan Layout
This 131-foot-long solar sailing trimaran by Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest has 8,500 square feet of interior space, more than double the volume of other yachts with similar lengths. Domus , meaning a single-story home divided into two parts, is defined by a flat and wide superstructure, containing multiple guest areas that lead to a central atrium. The full-beam design is spread across two decks, with two owner’s suites that each have adjoining salons. There is also a cinema, gym, spa, and pool. When sailing, Domus will be able to heel at an angle of two degrees to reduce drag while also guaranteeing a comfortable guest experience with minimal rolling. It also uses a combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology, and hydrogen fuel cells for unlimited range and zero emissions. If that’s not enough, it’s fitted with a sail for extra wind power.
EXPV — Standout Feature: Floating Glass Walkway Connecting Two Deckhouses
Over the years, Feadship has developed engineered yacht concepts that not only bring something new to yacht design, but also are ready to be built. The 285-foot EXPV , which the Dutch yard developed in collaboration with British studio Harrison Eidsgaard, is an explorer with a difference. The vessel has two deckhouses connected by a suspended glass walkway that separates the private owner’s quarters from the guest areas. The full-beam owner’s apartment, measuring 44 feet across, has an observation room, a helideck, and a private foredeck sun lounge. The other six guest cabins face the sea. On the lower deck, the beach club has folding platforms on both sides, an indoor swimming pool, and a skylight. A tender deck is located directly below. The mast holds a two-person pod that travels above the radar domes for exceptional views. The yacht also has hybrid diesel-electric propulsion.
Cantharus — Standout Feature: Underwater Lounge
Cantharus is about being immersed in nature. American designer Darin Osborne’s Cantharus is a vessel with unrestricted views of the ocean, above and below deck, to encourage guests to be at one with their surroundings. The 226-foot concept has an underwater lounge and office amidship that converts into an owner’s cabin. The space holds a piano, formal dining table, and entertainment system. More panoramic vistas are on the upper bridge. On the main deck aft, there is a Jacuzzi that doubles as a stage, and a bar and DJ booth. At night, underwater lights illuminate the ocean, shining a spotlight on the behemoths of the deep.
Galileo² — Standout Feature: A Private Marina
Described as the “catamaran that costs $500 billion to build,” the 656-foot Galileo² stretches the imagination in all directions. German naval architects Beiderbeck Designs, whose most notable builds include the 305-foot Eos and 233-foot Skat , conceived the multihull during the pandemic. It was clearly ahead of its time. Equipped with a methanol powerplant, it also has a 19,000-nautical-mile range, a retractable restaurant, and a 262-foot pier for the 38 guests to take walks at sea. Along with 75 crew, the yacht has a private marina with 260 feet of dock space—enough for 25 boats, submersibles, and toys. Other key features include an outdoor cinema, a hospital, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
Phoenicia — Standout Feature: Articulated Helipad
Igor Lobanov’s sailing concept Phoenicia catches the eye with a reverse bow, a raised bowsprit, and an Arabian-inspired cutout on the superstructure that casts shadows across the yacht’s exterior decks. Even more dramatic are the masts on the main deck behind a glass-walled gallery. The yacht, a bridge between old and new, fuses a large traditional sail rig with an articulated helipad that unfolds from the roof of the owner’s suite. At night, 33 laser lights shine into the water, giving the impression that the yacht has two decks of oars.
Project L — Standout Feature: An Underwater Glass-Encased Owner’s Suite
French designer Thierry Gauguin is a long-time collaborator of Philippe Starck, with projects that include Venus , the 260-foot Feadship built for Steve Jobs. His ultra-modern 394-foot concept Project L is his first solo design. Conceived for long, oceangoing passages with diesel-electric propulsion, it is fitted out with a glass-encased underwater owner’s suite at the bow. The bullet-like exterior blends the naval architecture of a sailing vessel with motoryacht convenience. Outdoor deck areas are limited to the small sun deck and an extendable beach club at the stern, both of which have pools. Yet the design also includes a dinghy bay, a heliport, a car garage, and even an underwater escape pod for Bond-like exits.
Ocean Odyssey — Standout Feature: A 590-Foot Running Track
Penned by Italian designer Marco Casali as part of his 2020 “Owner for a Day” initiative, the 360-foot Ocean Odyssey is a floating hub of operations based on features requested by a yachting journalist. The vessel is defined by a two-level glass superstructure, which conceals a high-tech media center and a signature 590-foot running track. Its two-level stern works as a swimming pool (with lounges) on the upper-level beach club), as well as a private port to accommodate a custom 50-foot tender in a floating slip. More seating is found on the foredeck and bridge deck, while a helipad on the top deck allows for easy guest transfer anywhere in the world.
Protean 95 — Standout Feature: An Adaptive Platform
The 312-foot Protean 95 is all about flexibility. Designed by Dutch studio CBSPRO Maritime to meet a variety of owners’ needs, it can be used as a support vessel, an explorer yacht, or a mothership for sportfishing tournaments and sailing regattas. The hybrid electric yacht can also serve as a floating laboratory and research vessel for oceanographic expeditions, helped by its 8,000-nautical-mile range. The open aft deck is a multifaceted heli-facility that can accommodate an 18-passenger helicopter. It also has a helipad, under-deck equipment hangar, and refueling area, as well as space for a submersible, multiple tenders and other pleasure craft. Amenities for the 20 guests include a spa, gym, cinema, and pool.

ROME — Prosecutors in Italy said Saturday they have opened an investigation into culpable shipwreck and multiple manslaughter after a superyacht capsized during a storm off the coast of Sicily, killing seven people onboard. They included British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his daughter.
Termini Imerese prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio confirmed the investigation has been launched, but said no suspect is currently identified.
“We are only in the initial phase of the investigation. We can’t exclude any sort of development at present,” he told reporters at a news conference.
Cartosio said his team will carefully consider each possible element of responsibility, including those of the ship's captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision, the ship-builder and others.
“For me, it is probable that offences were committed, that it could be a case of manslaughter, but we can only establish that if you give us the time to investigate," he said.
The main question investigators are focusing on is how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.
Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and information they gained seemed pointing to a “downburst,” a localised, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.
Initially, Civil protection officials said they believe the yacht, which featured a distinctive 75-meter (246-feet) aluminum mast, was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout.
Investigators were also asked why the crew was almost entirely saved, except for the chef, while six passengers remained trapped in the hull.
Local official confirmed that most of the bodies recovered were found in the same part of the ship — on the left side and closer to the surface — suggesting that passengers had sought safety in the cabins where the last air bubbles had formed.
Deputy Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said it was likely that the passengers were asleep, adding that one of the main focus of the investigation is to ascertain whether they were alerted by someone.
Cammarano confirmed that one person was on watch in the cockpit.
Rescuers on Friday brought ashore the last of seven bodies from the sinking of The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged luxury yacht that went down in a storm near the Mediterranean island in southern Italy early Monday. The sailboat was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers.
The seventh victim was Hannah Lynch, 18, the daughter of Mike Lynch., whose body was recovered Thursday. He had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial in the United States. His wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 survivors.
Rescuers struggled for four days to find all the bodies, making only slow headway through the interior of the wreck lying on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) below the surface.
The other five victims are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy; and Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef.

Search resumes for British tech magnate and 5 others after yacht sinks off Sicily
Rescue teams were returning to the site of a sunken yacht off Sicily on Tuesday to search for six people, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who are believed to be still trapped in the hull.
Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?
Lynch, a tech entrepreneur, had recently been acquitted on federal fraud charges in the U.S. The yacht he was on, the Bayesian, sank two days after Lynch's co-defendant was killed by a car.

Mike Lynch’s Sunken Superyacht Is Largely Intact, Italian Officials Say
I talian investigators searching the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht said it appeared largely intact, a discovery that contradicts earlier eyewitnesses who said its mast had snapped when it sank in Monday’s storm.
Divers are reporting that the 180-foot-long yacht was lying on its side on the ocean floor, an Italian coast guard official said Wednesday. “The divers are looking for structural damage on the hull,” the official said.
The early reports from Italian officials appeared to be at odds with witnesses who had said the aluminum mast snapped during a violent thunderstorm when the vessel sank off the coast of Sicily with 22 people on board, including owner Mike Lynch, a U.K. tech billionaire.
The towering mast on the Bayesian stretched nearly 240 feet into the sky—making the superyacht the tallest luxury sailboat when it was built.
Maritime experts said a broken mast of that height could cause serious damage to a vessel, but the design isn’t a safety concern as long as the masts are well maintained and held tightly upright on the hull by cables called stays.
“Bigger masts support bigger sails and higher sailing speeds,” said Takis Tsakos, a veteran captain who also oversees for clients the construction of superyachts such as the Bayesian at yards in Europe and the U.S. “The yacht fans love the bigger masts because they look marvelous and give the vessel more volume. They are especially impressive at night when they are lit up.”
The Bayesian’s mast could have fallen on the hull, damaging it, or could have been uprooted from its base by the strong winds if the stays weren’t tight enough. Yacht captains say loose stays can make a boat tilt as much as 15 degrees even with the sails folded.
“That would have made a gaping hole and water could have rushed in. It was also a relaxed evening—doors and windows could have been open with more water coming in as the boat tilted,” said Tsakos, founder of Athens-based Yachtways GP, which rents out luxury yachts in the Mediterranean. “These will be determined when the yacht is pulled out of the water.”
The people missing and presumed dead in the sinking of the Bayesian include Lynch, his daughter, a top executive at Morgan Stanley and one of Lynch’s lawyers. The group was celebrating Lynch’s acquittal on U.S. fraud charges.
Italian authorities are continuing to investigate the accident and divers are trying to access the sunken hull. Rescue teams located five bodies from the wreck on Wednesday. The body of the boat’s chef was retrieved from the sea on Tuesday.
Masts must meet the safety standards of classification societies that give the green light for a ship to sail and monitor its maintenance over the years. Oversize masts on superyachts are turned by computer so they face the wind straight on and not sideways even when the sails are folded.
“For a vessel of this size to go down, there must have been tremendous ingress of water inside its enclosed spaces,” said Fotis Pagoulatos, a naval architect who has participated in a number of shipwreck investigations. “Its design allows it to stay afloat, even with two compartments flooded.” He said he wouldn’t be surprised if the yacht’s hull is found cracked and buckled from the forces exerted by the freak weather and possibly the cracked mast.
The single-masted Bayesian was built by Italian company Perini Navi and delivered in 2008 to its original owner. The boat, which was taller than it was long, was one of a class of supersize luxury yachts that cruise the Mediterranean and other hot spots.
Formerly known as Salute, it was one of several that Perini Navi built that was 56 meters long. But its sister ships had shorter masts—generally extending 59 meters, compared with about 72 meters for the Bayesian. Perini Navi didn’t return requests for comment.
The Bayesian has been eclipsed by newer boats owned by other billionaires. Jeff Bezos, the Amazon.com founder, commissioned the 127-meter-tall Koru, a three-masted vessel that was delivered in 2023.
The Koru was so tall that in 2022 it sparked a protest over plans to dismantle a bridge to let it sail out of the Dutch port where it was built. Instead, the ship was towed to another shipyard to have its masts mounted.
Still, the Bayesian remained one of the largest private sailing yachts. It was ordered by a Dutch businessman but, in 2005, he was paralyzed in a yachting accident and it was sold on completion to another Dutch owner and renamed Salute, according to yacht brokers.
In 2014, it was sold to an entity owned by Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, and renamed Bayesian. It has no racing history, but boats of this size compete in events such as the St Barths Bucket Regatta, an annual race in the Caribbean, and in the Perini Navi Cup, a four-day race near Sardinia.
Perini Navi is known for creating some of the world’s most famous and luxurious sailing yachts, including the 88-meter-long Maltese Falcon, one of the world’s most recognizable sailing yachts, with rotating masts and a futuristic design.
The masts of the Maltese Falcon are 57 meters tall.

A Waterspout Was Seen When a Luxury Yacht Sank. What Is It?
Witnesses reported seeing the tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian, a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

What caused the sinking on Monday of a sailing yacht carrying the British billionaire Mike Lynch and 21 other people off the coast of Sicily is still unknown. But some attention has focused on observations by witnesses, who described seeing a small tornado-like column known as a waterspout forming over the water during an abrupt and violent storm as the vessel sank.
Fifteen passengers on the 180-foot yacht, the Bayesian, escaped on a raft before being rescued by a neighboring cruise ship. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday and six people remain unaccounted for , including Mr. Lynch and his daughter Hannah, according to officials with Sicily’s civil protection agency.
Prosecutors in the nearby city of Termini Imerese have opened an inquiry into the cause of the sinking.
Here is what to know about waterspouts, a surprisingly common weather phenomenon that may have helped sink the luxury yacht.
What are waterspouts?
Waterspouts are columns of spinning air and moisture — similar to tornadoes over water, according to the National Weather Service .
While some form in fair weather, and are aptly called fair weather waterspouts, another more dangerous variety called tornadic waterspouts develops downward from a thunderstorm. These tornadic waterspouts can either form as regular tornadoes over land and move out to sea, or form in a storm already over a large body of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association .
Fair weather waterspouts are weak, often dissipate quickly and do not cause major damage, according to the agencies, but tornadic waterspouts are more often associated with high winds, dangerous and frequent lightning, and hail. The Italian authorities recorded strong winds and intense lightning activity at the time the yacht went down.
How common are waterspouts?
Experts say waterspouts may be more common than tornadoes, but because oceans are so vast, they are more difficult to track — and as difficult to predict.
“The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn,” according to a statement by Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Inness pointed to a 2022 study by scientists from University of Barcelona , which found that waterspouts occurred more frequently over warmer sea surfaces. The North Atlantic ocean has been unusually hot for over a year, repeatedly reaching record highs for the time of year , according to data from the oceanic association.
The International Centre for Waterspout Research on Monday said on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that it had confirmed 18 waterspouts near Italy in recent days, and several fishermen in the area of the accident told Italian media that they had witnessed a waterspout near the yacht.
What may have happened?
Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby boat that rescued the 15 passengers, said in an interview that he saw the Bayesian about 490 feet away before the wind and lightning picked up.
While it was difficult to see what happened amid the storm, “my theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” he said.
Towering over 237 feet tall, the Bayesian mast was one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world and it also had a special keel that could be raised or lowered, according to its manufacturer, Perini Navi. A keel is the downward-extending centerline underneath a boat that can help stabilize the vessel.
“In this case, having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano.
He added that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”
