Description:

The Vagabond is an excellent first boat for coastal cruising or club racing: simple but elegant, ideal for a couple with two children.

Start building in the fall for spring launch: the Vagabond is fast and easy to build.

She is a perfect coastal cruiser: fast, lively, stable and roomy.

The interior is exceptionally roomy thanks to the raised deck design: 4 full size berths, galley with sink and stove, an optional folding chart table and a dining table that slides under the cockpit. The forward cabin can be isolated by a curtain. A Porta-Potti is located under the V-berth. Roomy cockpit with storage for an inflatable dinghy or raft under the floor, lockers for sails and outboard : the Vagabond is designed as a real cruising boat. A 3HP outboard will push her at hull speed but she can carry larger engine: up to 10HP.

Boat: 1987 Cape Dory MKII 30 Hull #3,
do not need much description as they know what they want and are knowledgeable about them, with a very active owners association providing support and help.
I bought it as a for reasons and a way to be ,during those years could not help myself and slowly converted her to a "motorsailer",first adding a small stabilizer boom and sail, eventually rigged her as with both on roller/furlings.
All modifications including a tabernacle accomplished without new holes,in fact kept in mind if a new owner wanted to revert to trawling every thing can be removed except the step I used 5200 and will require some chiseling?
Here some photos, will add more later, been under pressure to get it going but can tell my reluctance.
is 14.000,located in NC
Does have a
Still in the but will have to remove and locate a place.

Boat: 1987 Cape Dory MKII 30 Hull #3,
,have to remove it from slip as the homeowners association allows one slip for homeowner.
I recently purchased a 30 and needed the slip to finish outfitting.
The Nimble has a 50 HP purchased new by prior owner on 08/26/2008 as per invoice.
I purchased the in 2009.
Launched in 2010
Hours on tachometer need to double check.
Boat was on my driveway most of 2009 as I replaced all inside ,re sealed windows, removed RV type of air condition on and replace opening with a new
Since then installed
, DepthFinder,VHF mounted Teleflex ,Autopilot EVO 100 ,Mast on tabernacle,Main and from in 2013,both on .
It comes with several gas and there is a gas/water separator filter.
As mentioned all the sailing is installed in such a way can be removed and returns to be the original version as was careful not to drill any thru fittings.
There is only a below line as I replaced portapotti with a self contained Sealand West #711-M28 Marine Sanitation System, with a 3 ways valve for discharge ,pumpout facility.
Uses a selfcontained tank and fresh water so no odors.
Replaced original with a Vetus mahogany?.
Modified access to panel to accommodate more breakers.
If I remember more stuff will list.
This is not a boat in as much as I used it until February when situation .
To pull it out of the slip just turned the key, motored to and is ready to be used any time.
There are couple of water from two hatches on deck need attention but is so minimal I just continued .
If not within couple of weeks, will have it bubble wrapped to protect it from the elements,my full attention is now outfitting my new to me and leave by end of August the latest.
On return this will see,I am 77 and not sure about how long I can, might be able to push it,if worse comes to be,may have to go to plan B, the Cape Dory, move the Nimble close to my daughter and continue fiddling with and just enjoy what I can.
I will be happy to answer any question

a Vagabond and doing the whole sailing modification too. I currently own a Nimble 20 (sailboat) but need the additional room for my wife.

I’m located nearby on the Caoe Fear and would like to see it for ideas if it is still in the area.

Let me know and thanks.

Boat: 1987 Cape Dory MKII 30 Hull #3,
that needs careful consideration, otherwise for the standing chain plates bolted to the outside of the much like 27 for instance will do the job,
I did bolted a traveller on deck just forward of the .noe necessary but helpful.for the I used a club foot tied on deck to a loose traveler for self tacking

? Does the Vagabond have a drop or ?

? My name is Ken , #321 505-9206. It sounds like the perfect boat for me. I like sailing and gunkholing. I'm 80 yo myself, but have big ideas, (as long as they last). I don't have much hope for your vessel still being available, but I thought I would try. Anyway, I wish you the best and admire your sailing tenacity.

Holder 20 is a 20 ′ 4 ″ / 6.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Ron Holder and built by Hobie Cat between 1980 and 1987.

Drawing of Holder 20

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Vagabond Sailboats built 128 of the HOLDER 20’s until the molds where sold to Coast Catamaran Corporation (Hobie Cat). Hobie Cat continued to build the Holder 20 until 1987 (Hull # 265).

I think the Vagabond 17 is an adorable little boat. A bit boxy, but cute nonetheless. There's one in the slip across the dock from mine this year. Last year I had a Newport 17 across the dock. Not nearly as sweet looking as the Vagabond 17. Ron Holder also designed the Holder/Hobie 20. It's a bit faster than the Vagabond, but not nearly as comfortable overall.

Looking good! Love the red sails. Eric

Backstay isn't as much a problem with wind in the sails, creating some camber, which shortens the length, and twists off, so it stays out of the way of the backstay. My full length batten at the top of the sail catches on my topping lift sometimes, and rarely on the backstay.

RussC said: You're all heart jackdaw. thanks. Click to expand

Thanks for fixing. Ha! I would love to have a Holder 20, but I've had the kind of boat where you sit ON it, as opposed to in it. I rather enjoy my cockpit now. Although... to have a boat like the Holder 20 just to campaign for racing, then it would be ok. (The side decks are the seats in the H-20.) There are a couple at our lake, and I got to go out on a decrepit H-20, with loose rigging, and a delaminating jib. The thing is still fast, and made it feel like we were short-tacking on the wide part of the lake ('cos it was so fast.) I bet it would be super fun in more wind on a bigger body of water. But, if I became independently wealthy, with unlimited boat bux and storage, I'd probably just opt for a new J/70 instead.

Jackdaw said: That vagabond looks a very cool little boat. But the Holder 20 will run absolute circles around it! Different type of boat. Click to expand
