Manhattan yacht club is the city’s top boating club — in new jersey.

Manhattan Yacht Club moved to Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City in 2015.

Come sail away to NJ

Holiday time. Pay attention. Meet the Honorable Commodore Michael Fortenbaugh, commander of Manhattan Yacht Club’s floating clubhouse.

He’s  who ? Does  what ? And it’s  where ?

Commodore: “Realizing New York City had no recreational sailing, in 1987, I founded this Manhattan Yacht Club. We started at South Street Seaport. 2015 we moved to Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City.”

So this Manhattan Yacht Club, which is in New Jersey, does what?

“We’re a spectator platform to watch sailing races and an event location for parties. Manhattanites anchor their boats north of Ellis Island.”

It’s a waterway clubhouse. So, if enough already with Santa, His Commodoreship says for a nominal sum non-members can — day or night — eat, drink, sail, yell “ahoy!,” watch whatever boats in New Jersey do in New York. But easy on the drink because if you fall in the water rescuing you is extra.

Got ‘Hustle’?

Adam Sandler, still hustling his Netflix flick “Hustle,” this month. Movie’s been with us since June, but some whispers have it wanting more, maybe come awards season. Let’s wish him luck.

On the hunt for royalty

My opinion — requested by nobody:

Once upon a dime was this female who knew how to marry, divorce, break into showbiz, memorize a script, travel to Europe’s moneyed places but not — not! — know who’s this red-haired Prince Empty over whom lackeys were blubbering.

She had scripts, tickets, cash, travel folders, computers, iPhones, magazines, newspapers, TV, Google, time to investigate, knew to play a part, work a script, hit the right place at the right season — and not know who he was?!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in a scene from their upcoming documentary "Harry & Meghan."

In London, Brits who paw the same high level ground told me — and I was not alone hearing this — she’d been actively out there husband hunting.

Her lady parts found the way. She now lives in her California sty by pawing everyone — father, ex-best friend, the Brits, brother-in-law William, sister-in-law Catherine, staffers and Queen Elizabeth’s entire kingdom.

One day Prince Empty will actually babble. And before you can say Hail Brittania she’ll be out there again hunting.

Being scene & heard

Miami. Multiple Art Shows: Art Basel Miami , Art Miami, Context Art Miami, Aqua Art Miami. Art Basel showed dead artists. Art Miami’s first two days VIPs only. Riffraff who have late dinner at 5 p.m. got let in Day Three.

And Manhattan? It’s awakening. Sunday night at East 60th’s Canaletto, owner Elvis says his “regulars” now all come back. And Dave at UES’s Beach Café joined Will Smith and R. Kelly in canceling Kanye from his jukebox. Hey, Yeezy come, Yeezy go.

And “Wonder Woman” Lynda Carter’s daughter Jessica Altman debuts her new song “Blood Moon” Wednesday at downtown’s Rockwood Music Hall.

We hear Mrs. Sussex is now looking to become a renowned global politician. Could even be she starts here — in Manhattan, the international capital of the world. Could even maybe be a lingerie shop called Frederick’s of Afghanistan.

Only in New York, kids, only in New York.

Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City will soon be the new home to the Manhattan Yacht Club. (Journal file photo)

New York's Manhattan Yacht Club is on the move. Not uptown or downtown, but across the river.

In a letter to its members posted on the club's website , MYC commodore Michael Fortenbaugh announced it would be moving from its current home at Battery Park's North Cove to Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City this spring.

"The concept of Jersey City might sound far to some members, but it is very close. Traveling across the Hudson River to Jersey City is similar to traveling across the East River to Brooklyn," Fortenbaugh wrote, adding that a commissioning ceremony for the club's 2015 season will be May 9 in Jersey City.

"And one of the great things about Liberty Harbor is that the water is calm. We will be totally protected from the ferry waves," he wrote.

However, this isn't the MYC's first foray across the Hudson River. Following 9/11, the club temporarily moved to Liberty Harbor Marina for several months.

Established in 1987, the club comprised 900 members as of 2012, according to the website. The club has been based in North Cove for the last two decades, and was in charge of the marina for the past 10 years. But when Brookfield and Island Global Yachting won a bid to take over management of the Battery Park marina, the MYC had to look elsewhere.

Fortenbaugh also noted that the MYC will continue its junior sailing program in Jersey City.

"This doesn't mean our club is finished. In fact, quite the opposite is true," Fortenbaugh wrote. "We are at a new beginning."

America's Cup sailing is around the corner. Did you know it has ties to North Jersey?

4-minute read.

Portrait of David M. Zimmer

The Olympics are over, but the oldest competition in international sports is just around the corner.

The America's Cup sailing event, founded in 1851, returned on Thursday with a preliminary regatta off the coast of Barcelona that sets the stage for a one-on-one final in October.

One of the challengers is a homegrown one: the New York Yacht Club.

Now headquartered deep in the heart of Manhattan, hosting club regattas out of Newport, Rhode Island, and having its racing team training in Pensacola, Florida, the club and America's Cup originator was initially based on the Hudson River. Its first clubhouse was in North Jersey.

Built in Hoboken in 1845, the Gothic cottage first stood by the waterside at Elysian Fields, near the bluff that holds Stevens Institute of Technology. John Cox Stevens, the club's first commodore, donated the land at the foot of 11th Street. His brother, Edwin Augustus Stevens, founded the university. Both were involved with the creation of the first winner of the America's Cup, a yacht named America.

America's Cup's founders

The brothers came from one of the most distinguished families in U.S. history. Their grandfather served in the Continental Congress, and their father, John Stevens, was a Revolutionary War colonel who became a pioneering entrepreneur and an inventor of steam engines and boats.

From their mansion overlooking the Hudson River and Manhattan Island, the colonel and his sons developed the first steam ferry to cross the Hudson. When Robert Fulton secured a monopoly on Hudson River steamship navigation, the Stevens family shifted its focus to other lucrative ventures. In 1809, the family's vessel Phoenix became the first steamer to operate offshore when it began service in Philadelphia.

Five years earlier, in 1804, a 19-year-old John Cox Stevens piloted the first propeller-driven boat. Shortly thereafter, he built a sailing yacht called Diver and raced it against fishing boats and ferries in New York Harbor for wagers. In 1844, he and his friends founded the New York Yacht Club aboard his yacht Gimcrack.

The clubhouse, which was modest compared with the club's current Beaux-Arts landmark in New York City, served as the center of club activities for 23 years, records show. That span covered the development, construction and trials of the yacht America.

America's Cup has North Jersey origins

The yacht America was designed by George Steers, a self-taught innovator of yacht design, to challenge the best in the United Kingdom. Its cotton duck sails were sourced from John Colt's mill in Paterson. When the yacht made it to Britain's Isle of Wight, the Royal Yacht Squadron organized a fleet race on Aug. 22, 1851. The winner received a silver trophy valued at 100 pounds sterling. They called it the Hundred Guinea Cup. It is now known as America's Cup, after the yacht that won it.

Within two months, John Cox Stevens and the syndicate that owned America had sold it and given the trophy to the club. The cup came with conditions. According to its formal Deed of Gift, it must serve as an everlasting prize for “friendly competition between foreign countries.” The cup's holder must welcome challengers.

The first challenger was the Royal Thames Yacht Club and a yacht called Cambria. The competition held in New York Harbor on Aug. 8, 1870, was won by the New York Yacht Club. The club went on to win every America's Cup match thereafter until 1983.

By then, the clubhouse was long gone. It survived calls for demolition in the early 20th century and in 1904 moved from its home just north of Castle Point in Hoboken to Glen Cove, Long Island, to serve as "Station 10." At a time, there were 11 stations along the club's racing and cruising route where members could land and load.

Vastly different competition

For the second half of the 20th century, the clubhouse was on loan and on display at Mystic Seaport, the maritime museum in Connecticut. Since the start of this century, it has sat on the grounds of the club's racing base Harbour Court, in Newport, Rhode Island. The club's America's Cup yacht, called Patriot, was built and designed in Rhode Island.

A far cry from America, a 101-foot schooner that was used by the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, the 75-foot-long Patriot relies on a pair of hydraulic hydrofoils on either side of the hull to seemingly fly above the ocean's surface at speeds of more than 50 miles per hour. Due to that technology, the modern America's Cup is a vastly different competition from what it was just 20 years ago. Still, at its core, the cup remains an event in which wind-powered vessels must chart an ocean course to victory.

The last cup was a disaster for the New York Yacht Club, which in team American Magic had one of three challengers for the title held by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. That cup's Patriot capsized in the round-robin qualifiers and, after major repairs, finished last in the event.

America's Cup 2024

This year, five challenger teams are taking on the cup holders from New Zealand. They include American Magic and the new Patriot, led by Olympic gold medalists Tom Slingsby, who won for Australia, and Paul Goodison, for Great Britain.

The first look at them in action comes during the final America's Cup preliminary regatta from Aug. 22 to 25. The match racing event will feature four races per day, with the top two yachts, technically classified as AC75s, advancing to a one-race, winner-takes-all final.

The results of the preliminary regatta have no impact on the America’s Cup standings. Still, they were crucial for shaping team strategy.

The New Zealand team, as the cup defender, has a straight path to the America's Cup, held from Oct. 12 to 21. The five defenders, however, must face off in the Challenger Selection Series from Aug. 29 to Oct 7 for the right to compete in the America's Cup best-of-13 match race final.

The races will be streamed free on the event’s website, YouTube and Facebook. Coverage is also available in the U.S. on ESPN+.

The Clubhouse serves as a spectator platform for members and guests to watch sailing races, and as an event space for corporate and member parties.

The downstairs Champagne Bar is a Members-only space.  The upper deck is open to Members and the public.  The Clubhouse is an important public-outreach program of our Club and helps introduce many more people each year to sailing in New York Harbor.

The launch fee to ride out to the Honorable William Wall is $20 per person.  Manhattan Yacht Club Members receive 50% off drinks onboard.

More details about the Clubhouse including a calendar of events is at  http://willywall.com .

The US Coast Guard capacity for the clubhouse is 149 people. Our Admiral’s Launch capacity is 47 guests.

Full Moon Parties

The big event every month is the famous “Full Moon Party,” a MYC Members-Only Event. Visit the club website for upcoming dates and more details.

History of the Clubhouse

The clubhouse was originally designed by Sparkman & Stephens and construction began in 2002. Seventy-six members subscribed to “Clubhouse Bonds” which raised money for the initial structure. The clubhouse has been improved every year since.

Who was the Honorable William Wall?

The clubhouse is named after William Wall who moved to New York City in 1821 after serving as a rope apprentice in Philadelphia.  He set up shop in Williamsburg and built a successful rope business.  Later, he served as Superintendent of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Mayor of Williamsburg, founder of the Williamsburg Savings Bank and Congressman for New York City during the Civil War (hence the title “Honorable”).  Five generations later, Michael Fortenbaugh moved to New York City after graduating from Princeton University.  Inspired by his ancestor, the Commodore also decided to create a enterprise on the waterfront.

Why kamala harris’s centrism is working.

The vice president’s convention speech embodied her efforts to win over swing voters.

jersey city yacht club

By David Leonhardt

Kamala Harris capped her first month as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate with a roughly 35-minute convention speech last night that embodied her aggressive efforts to win over swing voters.

It was a patriotic speech that was hawkish on foreign policy and border security. She described the United States as the greatest country in the world — a view many Americans hold but most Democratic voters do not — and she ended by saying that being an American was “the greatest privilege on earth.” She promised to confront China, Russia, Iran and Iran-backed terrorists and to make sure that the U.S. military remained the “most lethal fighting force in the world.”

She also offered a series of populist promises to help the middle class by reducing the cost of housing and health care — policies that many independents and some Republicans favor. And she spent little if any time on subjects that inspire passion among Democrats but are either secondary or off-putting to many swing voters, such as student debt forgiveness and President Biden’s climate agenda.

You can read more about Harris’s speech in this news story , as well as in this article on how she contrasted herself with Donald Trump .

In today’s newsletter, I want to explain why Harris’s move to the political center seems to be working, at least so far.

Who vs. what

Harris has surged in the polls , erasing Biden’s deficit and taking a small lead over Trump, for two main reasons. First, she has won over some swing voters, including independents, working-class Midwesterners and even a fraction of 2020 Trump voters. Second, she has done so at no apparent cost: In addition to attracting swing voters, she has built a bigger lead than Biden had among the Democratic base, such as young voters, college graduates and city residents.

How could this be? It comes down to the difference between the who and the what of her candidacy.

Loyal Democrats are energized about the who . They spent months agonizing over Biden’s flailing candidacy. Once he quit and Harris wrapped up party support in just a few hours, everything felt different.

Democrats remembered what it was like to have a candidate who could deliver a speech without making people fret that something was about to go wrong. Harris is full of energy and joy. She can cogently explain the administration’s policies, and she seems to be having fun in the process. Amid this electricity, many Democrats have been willing to tolerate her triangulation in the service of winning.

Harris isn’t just another Democratic politician, either. She would be the country’s first female president, of course, and is a woman of color. Today’s Democratic Party puts great emphasis on identity, especially race and gender. The party defines itself in large part as the defender of groups that suffer discrimination and injustice. Just watch Tuesday night’s ceremonial roll call to nominate Harris, when delegates celebrated her historic status — and their own identities.

This focus on personal identity can give pathbreaking candidates more flexibility to stray from Democratic orthodoxy without angering the base. Barack Obama benefited from a similar dynamic in 2008. He was more moderate than some other Democratic candidates that year, yet he still excited many progressives. (Obama’s speech this week was also fairly moderate. Nonetheless, it received rapturous applause.)

For all these reasons, Harris has formed an emotional bond with liberals and others who make up the Democratic base. That bond has freed her to pursue swing voters with the what of her candidacy. She offers an economic agenda that many working-class voters support. She claims that she, not Trump, is the true candidate of border security. She encourages “U.S.A.!” chants. Last night, she referred to American history as “the most extraordinary story ever told.”

A tight race

Even so, the presidential race remains close. Harris leads in enough states to win, but only just. And if recent polls have undercounted Trump voters as much as they did in 2016 and 2020 , he would probably win an election held today.

With the convention now over, Democrats won’t be able to control the narrative the way that they have this week. Republicans have already started running ads to remind voters of Harris’s liberal past. One ad opens by calling Harris a “San Francisco radical” and showing her wearing a Covid mask while she announces her pronouns. It then includes clips in which she calls for a ban on plastic straws, supports looser immigration policies and says more police officers don’t lead to more safety. Expect to see a lot of these ads before November.

It is possible that Harris has been enjoying a temporary polling bump — from the good vibes of replacing Biden — that will soon fade. (In that case, I’ll be curious to see if Harris goes even further to moderate her image; she said nothing last night, for example, about whether she supported an “all of the above” energy policy to reduce prices.)

Nobody knows what will happen between now and Election Day. What’s clear is that Harris has run an effective first month of her campaign, managing both to consolidate Democratic support and to moderately — in both senses of the word — expand her appeal.

More from the convention

Harris’s speech included a statement of support for Israel, a denunciation of Hamas and a demand for security and dignity for the people of Gaza. It was effort to bridge the Democratic Party’s divides on the war.

Harris spoke about growing up in a working-class neighborhood with an immigrant single mother . “She taught us to never complain about injustice, but do something about it,” Harris said. “She also taught us, ‘And never do anything half-assed.’”

Harris accused Trump and the Republicans of planning to jail opponents, cut taxes for the rich and ban abortion nationwide. “Simply put, they are out of their minds,” she said.

“My entire career, I’ve only had one client: the people,” Harris said of her background as a prosecutor and lawmaker. Trump, she argued, was running “to serve the only client he has ever had: himself.” Read a transcript of her speech .

Other speakers last night echoed Harris’s patriotic theme . Adam Kinzinger, a Republican former congressman, said, “I want to let my fellow Republicans in on the secret: The Democrats are as patriotic as us.”

Members of the Central Park Five — who as boys were wrongfully convicted of attacking a woman in 1980s New York — criticized Trump . Years ago, he called for the return of the death penalty over the case.

Celebrity appearances included the Chicks, who performed the national anthem, Kerry Washington , the singer Pink and the N.B.A. star Stephen Curry, who endorsed Harris in a video.

Harris’s grandnieces led delegates in a call-and-response about how to pronounce her name. “First you say ‘comma,’ like a comma in a sentence,” one said. “Then you say ‘la,’ like ‘la-la-la-la-la,’” the other said.

More on the campaign

Trump, calling in to Fox News after Harris’s speech, sought to distance himself from Project 2025, his conservative allies’ governing blueprint, and accused Harris of failing to fix the problems she was “complaining about.”

Trump said on social media that Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, who is Jewish, had done “nothing” for Israel and called himself “the best friend that Israel, and the Jewish people, ever had.” Shapiro accused Trump of peddling antisemitic tropes .

Arizona can require people registering to vote to show proof of citizenship , the Supreme Court said.

Trump’s New Jersey golf club will host a fund-raiser to support Capitol rioters , billed as the J6 Awards Gala, next month.

Arkansas’s Supreme Court rejected an effort to put an abortion-rights amendment on the November ballot, saying the paperwork was faulty.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. filed to withdraw from the presidential election in Arizona. He’s scheduled to speak about his campaign’s future today.
