Ale and Compass Dining Review at Disney’s Yacht Club

The Ale & Compass Restaurant took the spot of Captain’s Grille at the Yacht Club in Walt Disney World. The menu does offer a nice mix of options but does have a heavy emphasis on seafood. Let’s take a look at our full Ale and Compass dining review.

A Tour Around Ale and Compass
A look at the inside of Ale and Compass restaurant at the Yacht Club.
The interior of Ale and Compass has a modern nautical feel. Some complain it was lacking design, but I love the contemporary vibe this has inside. However, I must agree it doesn’t really match the traditional feel of the rest of the resort.
The main room has a direct look into the front of the kitchen.
Here is an up-close look at the kitchen at Ale and Compass. In the back, you can see the pizza ovens.
Dishes from Ale and Compass
Here is a look at the dishes we tried from our various dinners at Ale and Compass.
Parker House Rolls and Spreads
We decided to start our meal with some bread and spreads. This is the Parker House Rolls and Spreads. The spread options include Bacon Jam, Pub Cheese, and Citrus Butter. The pub cheese reminded me of like a Lunchables spreadable cheese but with a bit more flavor and class. Just the color and consistency threw me off at first look. The Bacon Jam is amazing, basically just a mix of caramelized onions and bacon bits. Lastly, the Citrus Butter was a knock you over orange flavor.
Short Rib “French Dip” Flatbread
This flatbread pizza is topped with Braised Short Rib, Marinara, Sweet Peppers, Cheddar, Herb Ranch, Arugula, Grilled Lemon Juice, Chili Flake, Au Jus. It’s not only great as shareable starter but it also works as a meal. The short rib is so flavorful and just as good as the main dish of it served here.
Four Cheese Ravioli
I opted to go with four-cheese ravioli with a butternut squash pureé, sautéed mushrooms, and sage-brown butter. This dish was absolutely excellent even if you aren’t a mushroom lover like my husband he enjoyed it sans mushroom.
Rib Eye Steak
The steak is topped with Herb Butter and served with a side of truffle fries, and watercress salad. The steak was huge and cooked to a perfect medium temperature. My husband wasn’t crazy about the french fries but I thought they were fantastic. How can you not like truffle fries?
‘Brick’ Lemon-Herb Half Chicken
Here is the ‘Brick’ Lemon-Herb Half Chicken. It is served with Duck Fat-roasted Fingerling Potatoes, Broccolini, Sautéed Wild Mushroom, and Pan Jus. It was good, I was overwhelmed in amazement over the dish. I personally in the future will skip this one and go for one of the other menu items.
New York Angus Strip
On another visit back to Ale and Compass we discovered they had changed the steak option to a 10-oz New York Angus Strip. It was amazingly good though so no disappointments here. Packed with flavor, I am sure the giant pile of butter they had melting on the top just helped this cause.
New England Seafood Pot Pie
The New England Seafood Pot Pie was another highly recommended dish at the restaurant and one of our guests was convinced. It got two thumbs up for presentation and taste.
Inside the pie is Shrimp, Scallops, Jumbo Lump Crab, and Sustainable Catch of the Day with Baby Carrots, Pearl Onions, Peas, Potatoes, Crustacean Cream, and topped with a massive with a Flaky Crust.
The seafood pot pie came out very hot (temperature-wise) – definitely scalded my tongue on the first few bites. It was divine with just the right blend of veggies to seafood and the cream sauce was decadent without being heavy.
Cabernet-braised Short Ribs
Another top dish recommendation for Ale and Compass is the Cabernet-braised Short Ribs with Roasted Vegetable Mash and Barbecue Demi. By the end of this meal, the plate was entirely wiped clean. I was definitely a little jealous on the inside that I didn’t order this dish myself. I suppose that’s always a good excuse to go back and eat here again.
Pappardelle Pasta with Shrimp
This pasta comes with Spinach, Sautéed Mushrooms, Rebel Tomatoes, Roasted Garlic Cream, and Citrus Gremolata. I asked to sub out the shrimp with chicken and they said they could do that easily!
Desserts at Ale and Compass
Peanut butter & jelly.
Let’s start with the strangest dessert of the night, the item called Peanut Butter & Jelly. This is a Peanut Butter Mousse, Grape Jelly, and Peanut Crunch. It didn’t go over well with my husband. He was hoping for more a peanut butter dessert. He said it ended up being just what it said a classic PB&J. I personally must have been scarred as a child since I can’t stand the taste of peanut butter and jelly.
Twelve Layer Chocolate Cake
Being a die-hard chocolate fan I went right for the twelve layer chocolate cake. It was in my opinion maybe too much chocolate. I could hardly even finish a quarter of this cake it ended up being so rich.
Trio of Puddings
Our guests opted for the Trio of Puddings. The sampling included chocolate, blackberry, and butterscotch with mix-ins. The butterscotch pudding was by far our favorite and paired perfectly with the ladyfingers, meringue cookies, and chocolate wafers.
Ale and Compass Dining Review Recommendation
We thought Ale and Compass was a great option for those who are staying close by. It’s not as good as the Yachtsmen Steakhouse but it also costs a lot less and will help on your Disney food budget. You may want to skip this option if you are looking for a highly themed restaurant or if your party isn’t a big fan of seafood.
I have been visiting the parks annually since my parents first brought me at just a year old. Recently I was able to fulfill my life long dream of being a Florida local and moved from the wintery Northeast to the sunshine and fun of central Florida. Now I am hoping to share my Disney knowledge with you so you can have the best vacation possible!

The Complete Guide to Eating at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts
By Leigh Caldwell 2 Comments
There are LOTS of Disney resorts , and it can be hard to choose which one to stay at.
Disney’s Yacht Club
If you’re a big Disney food fan (like we are!), the restaurants at each resort may influence your decision. Allow us to make that decision easier for you! Let’s head over to Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts for The Complete Guide to Eating at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts!
There are 10 places you can eat at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts. Let’s take a look at the tried-and-true favorites at each location!
Ale & Compass Restaurant
Ale & Compass is known for its New England-inspired comfort food. It is part of a larger complex that includes the Ale & Compass Lounge and a small market. If you’re a fan of sweet breakfasts, don’t miss the Dark Chocolate Waffle, which is served with Cherry Compote and Espresso-Mascarpone Cream.
So much yum!
At dinner, the New England Seafood Pot Pie (with shrimp, scallops, crab and vegetables in a flaky crust) is a favorite. You’ll also find classics like steak, roast chicken, and burgers on the menu.

Ale & Compass Lounge
The Ale & Compass Lounge just off the Disney’s Yacht Club Resort lobby is a great place to grab a drink and an appetizer. It was remodeled a few years ago, and the look now is modern and sleek, with nautical touches.
It just seems right to drink a Dark & Stormy or a Regal Manhattan in this classy space. Food is served here from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly, and while it is labeled as appetizers, you can get a burger or a flatbread that is definitely large enough to serve as dinner.

The market at ale & compass.
This quick-service location has a focus on grab-and-go items such as cold sandwiches, fruit cups, and salads. But there is a coffee bar, and there are hot items available here, as well.
Chilled Options
Best bets here include the Ham and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich served on a Pretzel Roll , or the Cuban Sandwich for lunch or dinner. The Market is also a great place to find special, themed cupcakes and other treats around the holidays.

Cape may cafe.
Cape May Cafe is home to a popular character breakfast — the Minnie’s Beach Bash Breakfast. You can usually find Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy here — and they are all dressed up in adorable beach wear! The buffet is pretty standard breakfast fare, with the Salted Caramel “Beach Buns” as a highlight.
Minnie is ready for a day at the beach!
At dinner, the Cape May dinner buffet features New England seafood favorites, including Clam Chowder, snow crab legs, and fried seafood. Do not miss the Oreo Bonbons among the dessert selection here. They are a cookies-and-cream mousse-filled bonbon on top of an Oreo cookie, and they are a perennial DFB favorite!

Beaches and cream.
There’s one place to go when you want large and over-the-top ice cream treats, and that’s Beaches & Cream ! We particularly love the No Way Jose Sundae and Kitchen Sink offerings.
Kitchen Sink Sundae
We suggest grabbing the Kitchen Sink only if you’re with a group because it’s a LOT of ice cream to finish! This giant treat includes a scoop of every ice cream on their menu, along with every single one of their toppings , so it really is a challenge! While you do need a reservation to dine inside the restaurant , the to-go window offers ice cream to take with you to your final destination. You can also grab a burger and fries here for lunch or dinner!
Learn more about Beaches & Cream here!
Beach club marketplace.
Like The Market at Ale & Compass, Beach Club Marketplace is a quick service location where you will find both hot food and grab-and-go options. The Steak and Egg Breakfast Sandwich with Swiss Cheese and Garlic-Peppercorn Ranch Dressing is a specialty in the mornings.
Rainbow Mickey Caramel Cheesecake
This is another good place to look for fun seasonal treats, like this Rainbow Mickey Caramel Cheesecake we found there for Pride Month. If you’re looking for an inexpensive dinner option, the Half-Roasted Chicken Dinner with mashed potatoes, vegetables, and cornbread is big enough to split and less than $15.
Check Out These BEAUTIFUL Cupcakes We Found at Beach Club Marketplace!
Martha’s vineyard lounge.
We suggest the wings and mussels at Martha’s Vineyard . And if you’re a fan of out-of-this-world drinks, this is a place you will want to check out. The space is designed to be reminiscent of a New England beach house, but we will say that the theming here isn’t great compared to other lounges on the property.
It’s a Candy Cane Mimosa!
We’ve seen candy cane mimosas and jelly bean cocktails at this location before , so Martha’s Vineyard may be a fun place to check out.
Are These Drinks at Martha’s Vineyard a Little TOO crazy? You Tell Us!
Hurricane hanna’s .
Hurricane Hanna’s is the pool bar for the Yacht and Beach Club’s Stormalong Bay pool. You should know that you cannot swim in the pool unless you are a guest of the Yacht Club or Beach Club, but anyone can enjoy a drink or a snack at Hurricane Hanna’s.
Storm Chaser and Souvenir Cup
The food here will not be the best thing you eat on the trip, but it is decent for a day enjoying the sunshine. Kids’ meals are served in a plastic sand bucket with attached shovel, which is a fun treat that can then be put-to-use playing in the sand! We DO love a good blue drink, and the Storm Chaser — made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Bacardi Superior Rum, Blue Curaçao and Sweet-and Sour topped with Sprite — is a fun reason to spend some time watching the action in the pool here.
Click Here for Our Review of the Stormchaser!
Yachtsman steakhouse.
We highly recommend Yachtsman Steakhouse as the place you can find some of the best steaks on Disney World property. You will get a traditional steakhouse experience here — one that caters to nearly all tastes.
Filet Mignon at Yachtsman Steakhouse
We definitely recommend ordering the Cognac-Truffle Butter for your steak, and the Truffle Mac and Cheese is a side dish that would please just about anyone. We find the size of the side dishes to be big enough for two — so keep that in mind when ordering here!
Click Here for a Recent Review of Yachtsman Steakhouse!
Crew’s Cup Lounge
The Crew’s Cup Lounge is right next door to Yachtsman Steakhouse. We love the cozy vibes here! While you won’t find a lot of specialty drinks, the Crew’s Cup Lounge is a good place for beer or a glass of wine, and stocks several scotches and cognacs . It’s also a good place to watch a game if you’re missing watching sports while on vacation.
Starting at 5PM, Crew’s Cup serves a limited menu of favorites from the steakhouse next door. We recommend the Yachtsman Signature Bread (especially the onion pull-apart rolls!), and the Lobster Bisque .

Epcot festivals.
You can walk to EPCOT from this resort, so we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that some of best eats available to you could be right inside EPCOT’s International Gateway if there’s a festival going on!
EPCOT Food & Wine Festival
EPCOT festivals truly have a plethora of different options , so it’s great if no one in your group can decide on one place to eat, or if you have many items to check off your festival list anyway! Check the pages below for the latest dates, menus and information on EPCOT’s festivals:
- EPCOT International Festival of the Arts

Walking around Disney’s BoardWalk is also a great option, as it’s really close by and has some great restaurants as well .

It is hard to beat Ale and Compass for a delicious breakfast and we love lunch at Beaches and Cream…especially the tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich. Yum! Both of these restaurants are good reasons to stay on the Boardwalk as far as we are concerned!
January 31, 2023 at 11:56 am
Looking forward to our lunch at Beaches and Cream next month. Lunch choices will probably be chicken sandwiches, followed by dessert (No Way Jose and Strawberry Shortcake). We usually order burgers or grilled cheese, but the chicken sandwich sounds so delicious, so we decided to be a bit different; but we need our favorite desserts.

Ale and Compass Review (Dinner and Lunch at Disney’s Yacht Club)
It’s no secret that Ale and Compass at Disney’s Yacht Club is one of our favorite hidden gems at Walt Disney World. We enjoy it so much that we dine here multiple times a year.
In this review of Ale and Compass Restaurant, we’ll preview a recent lunch and several dinners past. Since we’ve dined here for each meal period, there’s a separate review of breakfast at Ale and Compass that covers most of the menu items.
Ale and Compass is located off the lobby of Disney’s Yacht Club Resort . The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.
For lunch, the restaurant is open between 11:45 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. They then reopen from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for dinner.
We began dining at Ale and Compass many years ago when the restaurant went by another name, The Captain’s Grille. Back then, we usually stayed at the Yacht or Beach Club for vacation. Over the course of our vacation, we would eat at the restaurant several times.
So when we heard the former restaurant was closing, there might have been a few tears shed. Thankfully, the new location somehow manages to have the same charm while offering a wide array of menu items.
Let’s take a look at a few of those items.
Ale and Compass Review (Lunch)
Over the summer, when my sister was visiting, we went to Magic Kingdom to see the Festival of the Fantasy Parade . At that time, the parade was offered twice daily.
After the parade, we didn’t have any plans other than to park hop to Epcot. Of course, we had to wait until 2:00 p.m. because of the silly park-hopping rule Disney has been enforcing.
So I suggested we take a bus to Disney’s Yacht Club from Magic Kingdom and have lunch at Ale and Compass. Of course, we didn’t have a reservation, but I was fairly certain we could score one or at least join the walk-up list.
After checking the My Disney Experience app, I found a reservation. One of the best things about Ale and Compass is that there’s almost always availability.
But if there’s no availability, they often offer the option to join a walk-up list. If you join the walk-up, they’ll send a notification when your table is ready.
For starters, we ordered an appetizer to share, the Parker House Rolls with spreads. Three spreads come with the rolls. We have citrus butter, bacon jam, and pub cheese from left to right.
Our rolls were served warm, fresh out of the oven. They were sprinkled with sea salt and a touch of herbs.
My favorite of the spreads was the pub cheese. But the bacon jam and citrus butter were also delicious.
These rolls are an excellent way to start your meal. I wouldn’t hesitate to order them again.
Instead of ordering an entree, I decided to order another appetizer. For my main course, I had the jumbo lump crab cake, which turned out to be two crab cakes.
As you can see, I had more than enough food between the crab cakes and a few rolls. My order of crab cakes came with stone ground mustard cream, lemon emulsion, succotash, and greens.
If you enjoy crab cakes, consider ordering this dish as a meal. They are only available on the lunch menu at Ale and Compass.
My sister went with an entree, Ale and Compass’s Fish and Chips. Like my crab cakes, this dish is only available on the lunch menu.
She received two pieces of fish and a substantial serving of fries. A lemon caper tarter sauce comes on the side.
I might have to order these on my next visit. That crispy batter was finger-licking good.
By the end of our meal, we were completely full and ready to head to Epcot. Since Yacht Club is in the Epcot Resorts Area , we were able to walk from the hotel to Epcot’s International Gateway entrance.
Overall we had an excellent meal that didn’t break the budget, and we couldn’t have asked for a more convenient location.

Ale and Compass Review (Dinner)
On our last visit to Ale and Compass for dinner, I was joined by my friend Kristen from Firefly Travels. We were staying at the Waldorf Astoria and decided to grab a meal somewhere near Epcot.
Our plan was to have dinner and then walk into Epcot to see the fireworks. Unfortunately, we were both pretty worn out after our meal and never made it over to Epcot.
However, we were able to see a bit of Harmonious from our room at the Waldorf. More about that experience is available in our resort review.
Related: Waldorf Astoria Orlando Review
Anyway, when we arrived at Ale and Compass, we were both pretty hungry. Kristen had just flown in from Ohio, and I had been all over the theme parks that day updating character meets.
We were meeting and heading to Jamaica the next day to attend a travel conference. Needless to say, we were both ready for a warm meal when we got to Ale and Compass for dinner.
For starters, Kristen ordered the lobster and corn chowder.
This order of chowder was rich and creamy with luscious bites of lobster alongside crisp corn kernels.
I went with an appetizer, the roasted buffalo-style cauliflower. This dish comes with hearts of Romaine and herbed ranch sauce.
Overall, I liked the cauliflower but felt it was too spicy. Kristen tried some, and she thought it was delicious but way too hot. Perhaps, we received an over-seasoned dish?
As someone who loves spicy food, I can usually force myself to enjoy it with the heat. However, that was not the case with this dish. You might have better luck.
Next, Kristen ordered truffle fries that came with roasted shallot mayonnaise.
Oh my goodness! Thankfully, she was happy to share them. They were SO GOOD.
Our order of fries was perfectly cooked and seasoned with the right amount of herbs. They were the kind of fries with bits and pieces of skin left on them.
Additionally, the fries were perfectly doused with the right amount of truffle oil and dusted with parmesan cheese. Again, they were SO GOOD.
Aside from all of that goodness, there was a special dipping sauce. You know I don’t do mayonnaise, so I didn’t try it.
Since I initially wrote this review, I’ve found another location to order truffles fries at Disney World, the Enchanted Rose Lounge at Grand Floridian . Okay, these are probably my favorite because they’re steak fries, but you can’t go wrong with either option.
Lastly, we ordered the bacon and Vermont cheddar burger to share. Our server brought a knife and an extra plate so we could share.
I think our meal provides a nice example of how you can order several menu items and split things up between friends or family. Sometimes, when perusing the menu, it becomes tough to narrow it down to one thing.
So instead, get together and see what other people in your group might want. Then combine those items to make a meal.
Often, each item is more than large enough to share between multiple people, like this huge, juicy burger. Unfortunately, the picture doesn’t do the size justice.
Ale and Compass’s signature burger comes with caramelized onion on a Parker House bun. The burger features Applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and herb mayonnaise.
We ordered ours sans the mayo. Oh, and that’s a sweet pickle (not dill) on top.
Our burger came out a perfect medium-well and full of flavor. We both enjoyed it and felt like it was an excellent option for anyone wanting a traditional menu item.
Other than the cauliflower dish, I would order everything again in the future. However, next time, I want to try the New England Seafood Pot Pie.
I had considered ordering the pot pie this evening but was a little concerned it might be too wintery feeling, given I had been out in the heat all day. Someone next to us ordered it, and it looked amazing.
A few other dinner menu items include:
- 10 oz New York Angus Strip
- Pappardelle Pasta with Chicken
- ‘Brick’ Lemon-Herb Half Chicken
- Plant-based Protein Bowl
- Cabernet-braised Short Ribs
- Sustainable Catch of the Day
In addition, kids’ meals include grilled chicken, pasta, cheeseburgers, and fish.
You can preview the entire dinner menu here on Disney’s site.
As for Ale and Compass, I’m sure it won’t be long until my next visit. We eat here more than any other restaurant at Walt Disney World.
If you decide to try a meal here, I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.
