I'd say that maybe a very slight comment is that a Croatian crew and cooking etc is always going to be a little more "Eastern European" than, say an Italian crew. Greece: Lefkada Island – Ionian Sea

Get ready to explore the magnificence of Lefkada, with its famous exotic beaches, picturesque villages, and hospitable residents. Visit some of the island’s stunning beaches as you sail across its coastline backdropped with magnificent landscapes. You can start your sailing trip from Lefkas Marina and head towards Pefkoulia beach, a sand-covered beach with clear blue waters and pine trees. After that, don’t forget to swim in Milos, a splendid beach in idyllic surroundings on the northern part of the island. Milos beach is next to the village of Agios Nikitas, the only village at sea level on the west coast.

Between Milos and Agios Nikitas, there is a hidden beautiful beach, Ammoudoula, where the cave Fokotrypa stands. Don’t forget to taste traditional food like the black perch fish, which is traditionally stewed in its juice. Moreover, another dish you should taste is “Bakaliaros skordalia”, which consists of small pieces of cod spiced and fried in batter, always served with a special garlic sauce.

Italy : Sicily

Sicily is at the crossroads of the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas, an island where the myth continues to live on. Spain: Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean and consist of seven islands. The islands are characterized by lush vegetation and volcanic landscapes. 1. The French Riviera

Perhaps the most glamorous seaside destination in Europe, the French Riviera , or Côte d’Azur, draws the sailor and sunseeker alike. Picture-postcard villages and chic beach resorts line the coast from the cosmopolitan glitz of Saint-Tropez and Cannes to the unspoiled beauty of Port-Cros.

The winter resort city of Nice, with its ample sunshine, white sand beaches, and special events such as the Cannes Film Festival attract a who’s who of international glitterati. West along the coastline, past the jet-set destination of Saint-Tropez, the island of Porquerolles awaits, with a peaceful escape from the bustle of the mainland.

2. Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia’s Emerald Coast is a playground for the jet set, and its dramatic, unspoiled coastline and luxury marinas draw yacht folk from all over. The marine grottoes of Cala Gonone and the rock formations of Capo Testa, shaped by centuries of sea winds, are favorite attractions.

While the quaint towns of Carloforte and Castelsardo provide local color, the exclusive Yacht Club Costa Smeralda offers dining, a clubhouse, and spa services. Sailors can explore the tiny islands of the Maddalena archipelago or the white sandy beaches and rocky cliffs along the Gallura coast. Tranquil sunset viewing turns to fine dining and sizzling nightlife in the exclusive restaurants, clubs, and discos of Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo.

3. The Greek Islands

Surrounded by its “wine-dark” seas and thousands of islands, ancient Greece prospered with a maritime culture that became the cradle of Western civilization.

There is plenty left to explore, from the natural beauty of its uninhabited isles to the beaches and cosmopolitan nightlife that have made islands such as Mykonos into global destinations. Yachters can stop for an archaeological exploration on Rhodes or Delos, a night on the tiles in the tavernas of Athens, to the nightclub scene of Mykonos, Corfu, and Crete, the largest of the Greek islands.

The adventure starts in the ancient seaport of Piraeus, in southwestern Athens. Zea Marina is one of the finest, full-service marinas in the Mediterranean, offering 670 berths for vessels up to 492 feet.

4. The Bahamas

The 700 islands of The Bahamas begin at Bimini, just 45 miles off the coast of Miami, and stretch 500 miles southwest to the islands of Great Inagua and Little Inagua, neighboring the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Bahamas were made famous by Ian Fleming (the islands featured in the James Bond spy thrillers Casino Royale , Thunderball , The Spy Who Loved Me , Never Say Never Again , and License to Kill ). But they’ve been a haven for sailors and swashbucklers since the 18th century.

They’re a paradise below the waterline, too, for sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. Palm-lined beaches, nature preserves, world-class golf courses, and colorful Colonial-style villas welcome seafarers ashore.

5. The Florida Keys

The Florida Keys arc southwest from Virginia Key in the Atlantic Ocean (just south of Miami Beach) to Loggerhead Key in Dry Tortugas National Park, a remote seven-island archipelago in the Gulf of Mexico, 70 miles off Key West. The islands are easy to navigate. Cruising in the Keys can mean a leisurely and scenic sail through the shallow interconnected basins of Florida Bay or a more adventurous trip out on the open waters of the Atlantic.

But it’s not all plain sailing. Mariners can drop anchor in a coral cove to swim, snorkel, or fish, or drop anchor in Islamorada, the “Sportfishing Capital of the World.”  Of course, a trip to the Keys is not complete without a visit to continental America’s southernmost city, Key West, otherwise known as the Conch Republic—a place described as “close to perfect and far from normal,” where flip-flops are the official footwear and every day the sunset is applauded.

6. The British Virgin Islands

One of the world’s great sailing destinations, the BVI comprises four main islands—Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, and Virgin Gorda. There are 50 more islands and cays, including Necker Island (Sir Richard Branson’s private paradise) and Salt Island, home of the wreck of the RMS Rhone, and hundreds of tiny palm-lined islets, sandbars, and rocky outcroppings to navigate, bounded by the beautiful Sir Francis Drake Channel, named after the Elizabethan admiral. 

There are countless draws for mariners: calm currents, steady trade winds, and protected bays. It’s a treasure trove, quite literally—some say it’s buried on Norman Island at the southern tip of the archipelago, made famous by Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island . Today, The Bight, one of the BVI’s most popular (and beautiful) anchorages, enchants seafarers with its sea caves, wreck-diving, and the infamous Willy T floating pirate bar and restaurant. 

7. Bermuda

Bermuda has been the crossroads of the North Atlantic voyage since the town of St. George’s was settled by shipwrecked sailors in 1609. Between March and November each year, racing yachts from around the globe arrive in the harbors of St. George’s and Hamilton parishes to compete in regattas organized by Bermuda’s many sailing clubs. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the island’s temperate climate is a year-round draw for leisure travelers, who come to cruise the island’s Great Sound and soak up the sun and local culture. The warm waters are ideal for scuba diving, whether it’s to explore marine wildlife habitats or historic shipwrecks that dot the reefs around Bermuda’s perimeter.

Cruising northern Europe: The best places to sail to

Cruising northern Europe exposes sailors to a whole host of beautiful harbours , ports and anchorages.

We take a look at some favourite cruising areas to inspire you to make some firm plans for the next season.

Cruising northern Europe: Homewaters and Channel coasts

Northern Brittany is full of both charm and challenge for anyone looking to escape the UK south coast for a week or two, says Miranda Delmar-Morgan .

L’Aber Wrac’h is the turning point for arrivals from the south up the Chenal du Four and for turning east.

The Île de Batz is a charming otherworldly place, with an alarming inshore passage littered with hazards but well marked.

East of the attractive Roscoff lies Morlaix with an impressive viaduct 5M up a channel marked with transits.

Any deviation risks immediate grounding in deep soft mud and the outer approaches need care.

Les Sept Îles are a bird reserve with a huge gannetry, and two anchorages on the southern side. Trébeurden is a useful stop but Ploumanac’h is the jewel in the crown with large pink boulders on the Granite Rose coast.

Both Lézardrieux on the Trieux River and Tréguier on the Tréguier River are lovely towns, and the areas around Les Îles de Bréhat and Paimpol are full of interest.

An inward journey up the uncharted Trieux River takes you to the pretty little town of Pontrieux where you lock in and lie on the wall. Tréguier and Lézardrieux are a common departure point for crossing over to the Channel Islands.

The west coast of the Cotentin peninsula, Les Îles Chausey, the area around St Malo as far as Les Îles de Bréhat provide for a circular cruise.

They are challenging waters with big tides. Granville for instance has a 12m rise and fall.

The whole of the Brittany coast is a seafood lovers’ haven with streetside cafés and restaurants crammed with crustaceans, and their crêpes and gallettes are a Breton speciality.

Both St Malo, with its wonderful Grand Aquarium and Mont St Michel not far away, and Granville, with its Christian Dior Museum, are wonderful towns, and of course St Malo has excellent ferry connections with the Channel Islands.

Channel Islands

The Channel Islands provide a cruising ground within themselves.

Alderney (whose residents were evacuated to Weymouth in WW2) has a wild feel with much of the history of the German occupation still in evidence with large forts.

It is lined on both sides with swingeing tides in the Alderney Race and the Swinge.

The Corbett Rock is visible in the Swinge at slack tide before the tide starts running hard to the south and there is an inner passage of relatively calm water usually visible.

However, the Swinge and the Alderney Race are not to be trifled with and first visits should be timed to coincide with neap tides.

You can anchor at Burhou but not go ashore, as it is a bird reserve. Sailors in Victoria Marina in St Peter Port can step ashore straight into the town, and facilities are excellent.

The waiting pontoons outside are also now shore linked.

Home to Victor Hugo, and duty free shops, it is a popular destination and a useful port for crew changes.

Sark and Little Sark are a delight with moorings off the Guillot passage and several anchorages, Herm has wonderful beaches and Jersey has the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust (ex-Jersey Zoo).

The islands have a warm maritime climate and an interesting history.

Moving up Channel

From Cherbourg eastwards there are many nice stops.

Nobody should miss St Vaast La Hougue on the Cotentin peninsula, which has the renowned Maison Gosselin delicatessen, and the wonderful Vauban fort on the UNESCO listed Île de Tatihou.

Carentan is approached up a charming canal with pastoral scenes.

The Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches is a fascinating place and in Honfleur you are surrounded by a town which is an artist’s delight.

Fécamp has a good tidal yacht marina

Fécamp is the home of the Benedictine monks and their delicious liqueur. Deauville/Trouville are fashionable holiday resorts.

Boulogne, Dieppe, Calais and Dunkirk all have deep water entrances and old town centres.

In Belgium, Ostend is another favoured stop with fantastic quayside fish stalls, on the way up to Holland.

Zeebrugge gives you access to the magnificent Bruges 6.5M inland and Antwerp has a marina in the middle of a beautiful town.

The Netherlands

The inland waterways of the Netherlands provide a delightful cruising ground with protected waters for novice crew.

Using the Standing Mast routes you can make your way up and down the country and step ashore in the centre of beautiful towns onto elegant streets too numerous to list.

The night convoy through Amsterdam, the Zaanse Shans museum with 18 windmills at Zaandam; the Westfries Museum (celebrating the Golden Age) at Hoorn; Rembrandt’s house in Amsterdam; and the 120m circumference cylindrical painting, the Panorama Mesdag , in the Hague should not be missed.

The canal to Haarlem provides the surreal experience of your cockpit being above the cows grazing beneath you.

If weather is bad outside for passage making to and from the Baltic then progress can be made south-west to north-east via the canals using the Standing Mast routes.

Passage making is slower, but better than being weatherbound in the North Sea ports.

Harlingen provides access to the northern canal to Lauwersoog or Delfzil on the Ems.

This is a slightly shallower canal though the Dutch still take quite deep (1.9-2.0m draught) yachts up it without batting an eyelid.

Portland in Dorset, England is a great sailing destination with a naturally deep water harbour, stunning coastline and was home to the 2012 Olympic Sailing Venue. Part of the Ancient Jurassic Coast which includes Chesil Beach a World Heritage Site, this area is well worth a visit for sailing, windsurfing, paragliding as well as Dinosaur footprints, birdlife and lovely walks.

Sailing and sand-yachting in Brittany

Sand-yachting, also known as land sailing, is a popular pastime in Brittany: a whopping 30 centers are prepared to teach you the basics of this simple and thrilling activity. You don’t need any particular physical fitness and you can practice sand-yachting all year-round. Avel Char is located between St. Malo and Mont-Saint-Michel and offers lessons to anyone ages 8 and up. Zef Attitud’, located between the beaches at Erdeven, Penthièvre and Port-Maria, allows you to speed along the sands depending on prevailing winds. The Centre Nautique Plestin Les Grèves, which is situated on Saint Efflam beach, offers plenty of watersports options including sand-yachting, catamaran, windsurfing, optimist, kayak or water walking.

Port-Navalo is an ancient fishing port close to Nantes and Rennes, located on the Morbihan gulf. The famous megalithic stone alignment of Carnac is just a short drive away. Surfing in Santander

Spain’s North Atlantic coast is not as mainstream as Costa del Sol or Costa Brava, but as far as surfing spots go, this is one of the best. Santander has many stunning beaches, like the popular El Sardinero, a 2 km stretch of golden sand and rocky shore and Playa de Matalenas, located in a cove flanked by high cliffs where the access is done on foot via a steep staircase. From Santander you can easily reach the amazing surf spots of Cantabria. West of Santander are Liencres, Suances, Oyambre and Meron and east the spots of Laredo, Santona and El Brusco, Cantabria’s most famous break.

Somo is a popular seaside resort east of Santander, with a long beach that’s become a major surfing destination in recent years. It’s ideally located close to Langre and Galizano beaches, a few kilometers east. Somo Surf & Body Board School offers boards for rent and surfing courses ranging from a weekend to a month-long retreat. Accommodation is included at the Surf Hotel and Surf Posada, just steps away from the beach. Easy to reach from Santander by bus or shuttle directly from the city center, Somo is a 30 min ride away and offers a beautiful view of Santander.

Among the many traffic-free cycleways in Veneto, Ciclabile delle Dolomiti is the most scenic route, connecting Toblach (Dobbiaco) with Cortina d’Ampezzo. the beaches of Maria Pia, Le Bombarde, Lazzareto, Mugoni, and La Stalla;
the caves of Neptune Capo Caccia;
Park Porto Conte; the nuraghi (megalithic constructions) and scenic places in the north of Sardinia.

In San Giovanni Suergiu, southern Sardinia, Centro Ippico Meurreddus a Cuaddu offers tours through the beautiful countryside and along the coastline.

5. Portugal

Scuba diving in Algarve

The coastline in Algarve is an ideal location for diving, rich in marine life, caves and rock formations. The sea conditions allow diving practically all year-round, but the best times are in Autumn and Spring, when the waters are quiet and the temperatures milder. It’s fascinating to dive and observe the variety of species and how they swim across the sea bed, covered in corals, sponges, anemones, and different types of algae.

The Algarve’s waters house many shipwrecks, from the time humans first started to navigate the earth, to incidents during the last two World Wars. The list of wrecks includes the Torvore, the Wilhelm Krag and the Nordsoen, three of the four ships that were sunk by the U35 submarine during the First World War, as well as the Empire Warrior, sunk by the Luftwaffe off the coast of Vila Real during WWII, and the Océan, sunk in Salema during the Battle of Lagos between the English and the French, in 1759.

Algarve Dive Experience offers courses for beginners and advanced divers, as well as dive tours to various locations. The Ocean Revival Project is a unique initiative which aims to transform Algarve into a world class diving destination by creating an artificial reef structure, including a warship theme park.

One of Europe’s best surfing countries, Portugal offers many fine locations to catch a big have. Perhaps the most famous of them is Nazare, a town along the center of Portugal’s coastline where a Hawaiian surfer caught a record breaking wave in 2011. Since then, Nazare has become a hotspot for thrill seekers.

High breaking waves are guaranteed here thanks to the underwater Nazare canyon. To the south of Nazare lies another great surfing location: Peniche. Built on a rocky peninsula, Peniche is known for its supertubos – powerful tube-shaped waves. In Figueira da Foz, north of Nazare, you’ll find Cabedelo beach located in the left bank of Lima river.

Just 20 m from Lisbon’s city center is Carcavelos, a long beach considered to be the birthplace of Portuguese surf. It’s usually crowded in summer when many people can be seen lounging at one of the beach bars.

Tennis school in Umag

The Istrian city of Umag is home to a prestigious tennis academy, one of the most modern tennis centers in Europe. The town’s tennis tradition started 26 years ago with the Croatian Open, a major sporting and social event. Umag Tennis Academy has 26 tennis courts: 25 clay and one hard court.

Apart from the tennis courts there’s also a gym and fitness center, saunas, tennis equipment store, restaurant and bar, as well as recreational zones. The offer includes weekend tournaments and individual tennis lessons, the Tennis Fun beginners course and Tennis Intensive advanced course, while children aged 10 – 18 can learn to play in the summer tennis academy.

Umag Tennis Academy is located right by the seaside at the edge of Katoro Resort and offers the best services: a team of excellent coaches, first rate accommodation and a variety of leisure activities. The Istrian cuisine is a delicious combination of Adriatic and continental ingredients paired with fine wines. Each year a food festival is held in Novigrad to honor the pilgrim scallop, considered to be one of the tastiest seafood in the world.

You can feel great at ACI Marina Umag , a large harbor with immediate access to the Adriatic Sea.

Adventure sports in Split

A region of great natural beauty, the Dalmatian coastline is one of Europe’s premier destinations. The ancient city of Split is renowned not only for its architectural heritage – the most famous example being the massive Palace of Diocletian – but also for being an excellent location for adventure sports. Adventure Dalmatia offers numerous multi-day adventure programs and one-day activities.

You can canoe of raft down the Cetina river, flowing through an amazing canyon that you can explore in a more challenging program that involves walking, swimming and two rope descents down a cliff. It’s an incredible experience that gives you the chance to see some of the best landscapes in Croatia. Sea kayaking and paddling are other fun activities to try, and for a more relaxed day there’s the Split bike tour suitable for anyone ages 8 and up.

While in Split we recommend mooring your boat at either ACI Marina Split or Marina Hramina , located in a sheltered harbor on Murter island.

Sea kayaking on the Lycian Coast

The ancient region of Lycia is home to some of the Turkish Riviera’s most beautiful landscapes, featuring many beaches flanked by high cliffs and protected coves catering to the yacht industry. Bodrum and Marmaris are among the most frequented resorts in Turkey, both close to major archaeological sites.

Kekova-Simena is a charming region encompassing the island of Kekova, Kaleköy and Üçağiz villages, and the ancient towns of Simena, Teimussa and Tersane. The bay was the site of a Byzantine shipyard, now in ruins. Both Simena and Teimussa have a large necropolis. Teimussa is now the modern village of Üçağiz, where boats set off for tours of the area.

Kayaking is a great way to discover this region, where many areas are off limits to swimmers and divers. You can get a close-up view of underwater foundations, walls and mosaics dating back 2,000 years. Tours often disembark at Kaleköy, inaccessible by road, where you can get an excellent panoramic view of the area from the Byzantine at the top.

We recommend the following marinas: Alanya Marina , Setur Finike Marina , Milta Bodrum Marina .

Kite-surfing in Alaçati

Alaçati is an idyllic town in Izmir province, largely unknown outside Turkey. The town’s ivory stone houses have distinct colors on window and door frames, giving Alaçati a rustic appearance. The boutique hotels and small restaurants complete the look. The yacht marina was designed by French architect Francois Spoerry, who also designed the tourist spot Port Grimaud on the Cote d’Azur.

At Alaçati Surf Paradise Club you can try a variety of activities, including kitesurfing, windsurfing, sea kayaking, and stand up paddle. The two spots for kitesurfing are Alaçati Bay – an excellent location with shallow, flat water and reliable wind – and Urla – located on a large protected bay at Içmeler, 29 km from Alaçati. It has superb conditions for kitesurfing throughout the long summer season, with shallow, flat-water.

Sailing in Europe: Your guide to 90 days of summer cruising

Three months of sailing in Europe: where would you go? Janneke Kuysters plots dreamy 90-day itineraries from multi-country trips to island hopping

Whether you need to fit around work, school, or Schengen zone requirements, three months of sailing in Europe can make for a summer to remember. Exploring the many cruising areas in Europe within the 90-day Schengen limit requires some careful planning, but there are literally hundreds of scenarios to choose from.

Would your ideal cruising adventure see you head north to enjoy long days on the water where the sun never sleeps? Or does the warmth of the Mediterranean hold more appeal? We have six itineraries to show how it can be done for maximum cruising enjoyment with minimal paperwork.

Northern routes

If you decide to sail north from the UK, it pays to start from a port that gets you as close to your European destination as possible. This may involve sailing three or four days to the English east coast, but once you’re there you can maximise your 90 days from the best possible starting point on continental Europe.

Seven countries by day

Incredible though it might seem, with careful planning you can visit seven countries in 90 days while only sailing in relaxed day trips. This itinerary starts in Ramsgate, Kent, from where you cross to France via Calais. Follow the Belgium coast, enjoying all the Belgian culinary delights of moules-frites and more, until you get to Flushing in the Netherlands.

Here your track heads inland on the famous Staande Mast Route, which leads you diagonally through the Netherlands, where you pass some interesting cities like Gouda, Haarlem and Amsterdam. Try the delicious Dutch stroopwafels (syrup waffles) when you’re there. Then on to Germany, via the Wadden islands chain. In the north you can work your way to the entrance of the Nord Ostsee Kanal on the banks of the Elbe river.

After motoring 60 miles on the channel, you are in the Baltic and immediately spoilt for choice. You can go east to the northern German and Polish coasts with their very protected cruising areas, for instance near the island of Rügen. Beautiful cities like Germany’s Rostock or Polish Szczecin are within reach. Or you sail north to Denmark, to sail around in the stunning archipelagos and visit the modern city of Copenhagen. Another option is to head north-east to Sweden where Malmö and Gothenburg offer excellent facilities. The summer days are long, so it’s realistic to plan to cover up to 60 miles on a day sail – plenty of time to enjoy the region’s summer festivals.

To get back to the UK, you have two options: to sail north in the Kattegat to Hals, Denmark, where you enter the Limfjord. Along the west coast of Denmark you can work your way south to the Netherlands, Belgium and France for a final crossing back to Ramsgate.

The other option is to loop back to the Nord Ostsee Kanal (often known as the Kiel Canal). This offers the choice of some interesting cities to visit: Antwerp, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Malmö and Gothenburg. The prevailing winds are south-westerly, so make sure you have plenty of time to wait for a weather window on the last legs of this trip.

Total miles This itinerary is roughly 1,800 miles, with an average of 20 miles per day.

Beyond the polar circle

This itinerary is for hardy cruisers who don’t mind making longer trips in the long daylight hours of the north, as well as some overnight passages. The focus is on Norway, with ample time to explore its magnificent west coast. If starting from the UK East Coast, make your way north as far as convenient – perhaps to Peterhead – then cross directly to Bergen, enabled by the prevailing south-westerly winds. After exploring Bergen’s spectacular historic city centre, you work your way north, visiting fjords and remote islands, until you reach the Lofoten archipelago.

The warm Gulf Stream makes the central Norwegian west coast, with its beautiful scenery, a very pleasant cruising area.

Once across the polar circle at 66°N the Lofoten Islands await: a spectacular cruising area with dramatic vistas from every angle. Try sampling fårikål, the national dish with mutton and cabbage.

Once you’ve enjoyed cruising there, head back south. Don’t forget to climb Preikestolen (Pulpit rock) when you reach Stavanger.

Keep following the south coast of Norway until you reach the Blindleia archipelago on the south-east coast, with its thousands of islands. The waters here are very calm: you can moor alongside a rock if there’s room enough – it is a very popular cruising area. You can sail from here all the way to Oslo.

Getting back to the UK can be done in many different ways. Given the prevailing winds it’s easiest to cross the Oslo Fjord and sail south along the west coast of Sweden, or through east Denmark, to Kiel in Germany. There you enter the Nord Ostsee Kanal, which brings you to the northern German coast. Then sail west via the Netherlands, back to the UK.

This itinerary has some good alternatives if you’re delayed due to the weather, and it’s easy to leave and sail back from many ports along this track, including Fjällbacka, Thyborøn, Mandal, Cuxhafen, the Dutch and German Wadden islands, and Den Helder.

Total miles This itinerary is roughly 2,200 miles, an average of 24 miles per day.

Long, lazy light

This scenario is for cruisers who’d love to keep all their options open and see how far they get on long midsummer days!

Your itinerary starts in Thyborøn on the west coast of Denmark. From there, sail through the Limfjord to Hals in the east. Then you can cross to Sweden or sail south through the Danish archipelagos to Copenhagen. If you fancy some skiing in summer, take time to visit Copen Hill in Copenhagen – an incredible urban ski slope built onto a roof.

Then on to the south coast of Sweden, where the quaint cobbled town of Ystad is a pleasant stopover port. You could make a slight detour and visit the large island of Bornholm, or a smaller speck in the Baltic, the Christiansø archipelago. From there, your route will be north-east along the Swedish coast. The skerries are incredibly beautiful and make for excellent cruising in sheltered waters with ample choices for harbours, marinas and anchorages to dip into.

It’s easy sailing to visit the historic city of Visby on Gotland, or nip inland to the huge Lake Mälaren. You could even cross to Finland and visit the Åland archipelago.

Again the best route back to the UK is via Kiel in Germany. From there, you can motor to Brunsbüttel at the mouth of the Elbe river. Depending on the weather, it’s a straight sail back to the UK, or take the Dutch Staande Mast Route (inland waterways) to the Dutch/Belgium border, before crossing the Channel.

Another option which is becoming increasingly popular is to leave the yacht on the east coast of Sweden during the winter. Nävekvarn has some good facilities to store the boat in a large boatshed; a growing international community makes this their base for cruising the Baltic.

Total miles This itinerary is about 1,650 miles, but with lots of options to stop and return earlier.

Sailing south

The distances between the UK and the Mediterranean – around 1,700 miles from the south coast of England to southern Spain – requires a different kind of planning and logistics for any non-EU cruisers. That’s because it isn’t feasible to sail down the Atlantic coast, into the Med, and back within the 90-day Schengen zone limit.

This means yacht owners will be looking for a place where they can leave their boat securely for a length of time, and with easy access to an international airport. Thankfully there are many places offering that, combined with idyllic cruising waters nearby.

Atlantic coast

If you want to spend lovely summers in the Med, you could sail directly to Spain non-stop, and start the Schengen clock when you arrive. But why would you? There’s so much to see on the way. If you can start early in the season you could begin exploring some of the stunning cruising areas of the south coast of the UK, then the Channel Islands and on to Brittany in France, where the Schengen clock will start ticking.

A relatively short hop across the Bay of Biscay takes you to A Coruña, an ideal place to begin your cruise of the sheltered waters of Galicia. Heading into the east of the bay, Santander, Bilbao or even La Rochelle are all interesting options, although less popular with cruisers as the prevailing south-westerlies mean you risk being caught on a lee shore waiting for a short weather window to continue west.

Galicia is rural and authentic Spain, unspoiled by tourism, and all the more interesting for it. The rias that cut deep into Galicia’s coast are stunning and offer excellent cruising options. Don’t miss the short train ride to Santiago de Compostela, where pilgrims culminate 500-mile treks at the massive cathedral. Another gem is Islas Cies, an almost tropical group of islands near Bayona in Galicia. They require a special permit to visit, but it’s worth the trouble of getting one.

You can spend a month on the Portuguese coast, enjoying the sights of Cascais, Lisbon and Porto. Then on to the Algarve, where you can leave the boat in Vilamoura, Portimão or Mazagón, or onwards along the Spanish costas until you reach Cartagena or Valencia, which both offer good facilities to store and maintain your yacht, as well as airports.

There is risk of an encounter with orcas along the Spanish and Portuguese coasts. Since 2020 hundreds of orca interactions have been reported, with many yachts suffering damage to rudders. The whales are now monitored closely, with up to date information available via the Orcinus app, Cruising Association and online to help skippers plan their passage and reduce the risk of an encounter.

Total miles The total distance from the Isle of Wight (with a few detours to explore) is 1,825 miles, an average of 21 miles per day.

Island hopping

Once your yacht has over-wintered in the Algarve or on the east coast of Spain, a vast cruising area opens up, where flying in for 90 days will give ample opportunities to explore some magnificent sights. It will involve some overnight sailing, but much of it can be done in day trips.

When you leave Cartagena or Valencia you can go straight to the Balearics: Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. These well-known islands offer secluded anchorages, stunning nature and bustling harbour towns with all the restaurants and bars you could ever want.

Head west from Menorca to Sardinia, a 200-mile passage where the winds can vary wildly in both direction and strength. While the breeze will often be light, to the point of being unsailable, when it blows, it blows hard – from north-westerly to southerly– so timing will be highly dependent on the forecast.

Here you cross the border into Italy to enjoy its dolce vita and excellent food. Sardinia is a large island with historic sites and many interesting places to explore, from the glitzy superyachts of Puerto Cervo to the pink granite islands of the Maddelena archipelago, a marine park.

Keep going west and you’ll sail to Sicily, where you can find safe harbours or anchorages and can explore the rich history on land. Then your course takes you north-west, to Rome and beyond. You can stay on the Italian coast, or cross to French Corsica for a totally different cultural experience. After that, there are incredible cities to visit by yacht: north to Genoa, west to Marseille or Barcelona. Each has good, but expensive, marinas. After exploring the glamorous French Riviera, turn south-west to return along the Spanish costas to Valencia or Cartagena.

Total miles The distance of this itinerary is roughly 2,150 miles, so 24 miles per day on average.

The Schengen shuffle

After your first year in the western part of the Med, you can join the ‘Schengen shuffle’ by dipping in and out of the EU zone in the Eastern Mediterranean, which also makes for some really interesting cruising options.

Your first challenge is to sail from the east coast of Spain to Preveza in Greece, which is about 1,320 miles, non-stop. With that behind you, turn north and explore the coasts of Albania and Montenegro (both non-Schengen) and Croatia (now in the Schengen zone). All are beautiful cruising areas, some busier than others. Services for cruising yachts are available, more in some areas than in others – Croatia is well developed for yachting visitors, Montenegro has worked hard to attract superyachts, while Albania is more off the beaten track.

Once you’ve had your fill of cruising in Croatia (with over 1,000 islands, the possibilities are almost endless), you can double back on your track and visit other destinations on the Greek coast. Or cross to Italy, on the western side of the Adriatic Sea, where it is tempting to sail all the way north to Venice.

As you head further south, there are many options for ending your season. You could keep cruising the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea and finish your 90 days there. Or continue on to Crete and Cyprus – both interesting destinations with lots of cultural heritage. There are many marina options to leave your boat for the winter, for instance on the islands of Corfu, Lefkada, Leros, Preveza, Kalamata or Piraeus. Some have good airports close by, others will require a ferry ride to a nearby island.

Alternatively you could finish your cruising season outside of the Schengen zone by sailing on to Marmaris, Turkey, then either leave your boat there and fly home to the UK or spend a winter on your boat. When autumn weather is benign, you could keep sailing for at least one or two months along the Turkish islands before you give the boat some rest in the winter.

Total miles: This itinerary is roughly 2,200 miles (not including the 1,300-mile crossing of the Med), an average of 24 miles per day.

Cross-Channel options

Whether saving your Schengen days or simply seeking a beautiful cruising ground, adding the Channel Islands to your cruising itinerary is a great choice, writes Annabel Finding

Alderney is only an eight-hour hop from The Needles and provides an ultra relaxed atmosphere to get into the holiday mode without the ticking of the ‘Schengen clock’. Pick up a mooring in Braye Bay and take advantage of the harbour water taxi to come ashore. Checking in is a straightforward exercise completed by popping a form into a box at the top of the gangplank.

The tiny island of Alderney is delightfully maintained in an era where everybody has time to chat. Bike rides, scenic train trips, gannet watching and exploring forts are highlights, and there is a range of excellent eateries both in the town of St Anne’s and down in the harbour.

Guernsey is only a short sail away. Leave Braye two hours after high water and The Swinge should be kind to you as you catch the tide down to St Peter Port. Visitors are well catered for both in the marina and on summer jetties in the main pool of St Peter Port. You’ll find yourselves moored right in the centre of town, rubbing shoulders with Guernsey-clad sailors and the suited and booted banking brigade. Sea swimming is a big thing in the Channel Islands and in Guernsey you can enjoy a seawater pool at the free Havelet bathing pools, walking distance from the marina.

Sark and Herm are both worth a visit, whether by ferry from St Peter Port or under your own steam. Herm is known for its oysters and beaches, while Sark has a rich and varied history with impressive cliff walks – and correspondingly very deep anchorages, so take plenty of chain.

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands and has an excellent recently extended marina at St Helier, while the Minquiers and Ecrehou Islands are amazing places worthy of exploration for the more adventurous – but check your tides carefully. From Jersey you can check out for France.

It's no wonder why. Europe's diverse coastline is full of natural beauty, from the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean to the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic coast. These beaches are set against the backdrop of charming coastal villages and host iconic European beach clubs (Aperol Spritz, anyone?).

To help travelers find the perfect beach for their next Euro-trip, U.K.-based travel insurance comparison site Quotezone ranked Europe's most popular beaches, considering factors such as sea and air temperature, calmness of the water, TripAdvisor reviews and average cost to visit the destination (including food, drink and an overnight stay). The beaches spanned beloved destinations like Greece, Spain and Italy but also included lesser known locales such as Slovenia.

"Anyone planning a vacation to Europe should be sure to visit these beauty spots featured in our index, especially our top three hidden gems Cyprus, Malta, and Slovenia," CEO and travel insurance expert at Quotezone, Greg Wilson, told USA TODAY in a statement.

10. Plage de Palombaggia in Corsica, France

Located in the Mediterranean Sea just south of mainland France, Corsica offers beaches comparable to the Caribbean with Plage de Palombaggia is one of the most popular beaches on the island. Think crystal-clear water, soft white sand and secluded coves. The beach scored the 10th spot on the ranking for is gentle waters and having over 3,300 five-star reviews. However, visiting the beach won't come cheap. Plage de Palombaggia is the most expensive beach on the ranking, costing €233 (about $259.73) for an overnight stay with food and drink.

9. Bournemouth Beach in Bournemouth, England

Tucked beneath cliffs, the sprawling Bournemouth Beach has been voted the top beach in the U.K. on TripAdvisor, offering rare warm waters for the country, a bustling pier and calm waters. Visiting the beach will be a bit costly for visitors – the beach is the second-most expensive on the index – clocking in at an average of €180 (about $200) for a one-day stay.

8. Playa de Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, Spain

Spain's Canary Islands are idyllic, offering diverse beaches made of black or golden sand. Playa de Maspalomas on the island of Gran Canaria is well-known for its lighthouse, rolling dunes and warm waters earned it a spot on QuoteZone's index. Surrounded by restaurants and hotels, visiting the beach will cost, on average, €151 (about $168).

7. Praia da Falesia in Algarve, Portugal

One of Portugal's most famous beaches, Praia da Falesia is worth the hype. The beach has an array of natural beauty on display – from sandstone cliffs to bright blue water – but also offers a lot to do. Visitors can check out the tide pools at low tide, swim or surf. Visitors can expect to pay around €137 (about $152) for a one-day stay.

6. La Pelosa Beach in Sardinia, Italy

Located on the second-largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is a picturesque escape for travelers, and its beaches are no different. La Pelosa Beach's tranquil waters and white sands have made it so popular that you need to book your visit in advance, which will cost €3.50 (about $3.90). Staying near the beach is pricey, costing about €166 (about $185).

5. Zlatni Rat in Bol, Croatia

Translating to "Golden Horn," Zlatni Rat is a famous triangle-shaped beach on the Croatian island of Brac that extends into the ocean. As the tides and swells change, the beach also shapeshifts. Besides how stunning the beach is, it's also relatively inexpensive to visit, coming in as the second-least expensive beach locale on the index. For food, drink and a one-night stay, the average price is €96 (about $107).

4. Elafonissi Beach in Crete, Greece

Crete is beloved by travelers, and Elafonissi Beach is one of the Greek island's famous beaches. Depending on the season of your visit, you may encounter the iconic pink sand, but year-round, the beach is beautiful with calm azure waters. However, the beach isn't exactly tranquil, and gets quite crowded as the day goes on. To visit, the average cost is €184 (about $205).

3. Portoroz Beach in Portoroz, Slovenia

Nestled against the Adriatic Sea, Portoroz Beach is a gorgeous pebble beach fronting Portoroz's resort area, so you can take a break from the sun and stroll the promenade. The beach is also the cheapest on the index, costing €93 (about $103) on average for a one-day stay.

Adventure travel companies have just rolled out their new European trips and destinations for 2025. Based on the current travel season, which has seen large numbers of Americans heading off for active vacations in the “Old World,” it’s not too early to plan and sign up now for next year’s travels. Here’s a look at five new trips.

Classic Journeys

Classic Journeys has unveiled the Dolomites Cultural Walking Tour for 2025. In a mountain landscape that can be challenging, the company says that it has “drawn on the knowledge of our exceptionally well-connected local guides to curate a unique walking and hiking experience, where you can be inspired, not intimidated.” They amend the walks with ski lifts and gondolas to access easy to moderate trails. Hikers get the same alpine meadows and views “but without the hut-to-hut overnights or the need to clip into a cable.” Daily mileage options range from three to nine miles per day, The trip is priced from $6,095, based on double occupancy, as are all trips mentioned here.

Rated 5+ Strenuous, the most challenging rating of their trips, distances range from seven to 10 miles per day, with 2,500 to 3,000-foot altitude gains and losses. The trip is priced from $7,795.

French and Italian Alps with Trek Travel.

The six-day walk gives you a taste of the famed Tour du Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest peak and most famous circuit walk. The walk includes traveling through the French Alps and into the Italian Alps, walking in the famed Col de la Seigne, crossing the border by gondola from Chamonix to Courmayeur via the Aiguille du Midi, and exploring the challenging Beaufortain region. Rated 4 (out of 5) for difficulty, the trip is priced from $4,399.
