Review of San Juan 23 Mk II

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The San Juan 23 Mk II is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.31 - 1.41 meter (4.30 - 4.60 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for San Juan 23 Mk II is 2.24, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for San Juan 23 Mk II is about 101 kg/cm, alternatively 567 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 101 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 567 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 17m 2 (182 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Boat: 1981 San Juan 23'
and then I couldn't find where to do that so please forgive me. After years of dreaming and scheming and waiting for the to grow up, I finally bought a sailboat. I live in middle Tennessee so the choices for sailboats were quite limited, unless I wanted to drive 500 miles one way.
Anyway, I finally found a diamond in the rough, I think. I know this will not be a world cruiser, but it will serve a purpose; it will be something adequate enough to learn how to sail.
It is a 1981 23. I had looked at a 22 a few weeks prior and it seemed tiny and light. The SJ seems to have a lot more room inside and to be a lot heavier/sturdier . I would love to hear any opinions on this matter.
I only paid $2200 for the , but it has a very good galvanized, dual axle , and a 2001 model 15HP . So I thought that was a reasonable . It still needs some . It needs new lines, some new (shrouds, blocks, lifeline, etc...) and some sail , and a little on the , and a new tiller handle.
But my goal is to have her in the by next summer, on Percy Priest Lake in Nashville. Oh and she needs some too. If I can figure out how to add pics I will do that soon.
Thanks in advance for any opinions/advice.

move well in the light and shifty winds common on Tennessee lakes. We have sailed Dale Hallow Lake, tying up in any of the secluded Coves. With that you can pull her anywhere...Apostle Islands of , Lake Huron North Channel, Kentucky Lake to name a few I like. And dont miss out on scallop season in the St Joe area. Lots of fun.

Broker's Comments

The San Juan 23 was a popular pocket cruiser and club racer built by the Clark Boat Co. It is a fairly lively, fast and maneuverable boat, with a huge amount of cabin living space for a boat this size. This boat has a nice newer suit of sails, and would make an excellent starter sailboat for learning to sail, or for competing in Seattle's renowned summertime Duck Dodge races!

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The SAN JUAN 23 derived from the more racing oriented SAN JUAN 24. This same design was also built in Australia for a time as the WINDWARD 7 and in Newzealand as the FLEETWOOD 25.

San Juan 23

Hello, new to the forum, 1st post. I just bought this SJ23 1979, all is well with the boat, so far. My question is about the 2 cockpit drain holes, one appears to drain fine, the other not, if i put the hose on the one working the water doesn't back up, on the one not working (port side) water doesn't drain as quick (backs up with hose).... Is there an access point to these drains? Could the water be going in the hull? Recommendations? (not Drano) I haven't been able to find any drawings/plans/blueprints on this boat. Thank you in advance. Alex

No, yes, not Drano. There might be an obstruction, see if you can run a wire to clear it. I would also be wary of the one that drains real fast as that could be the one leaking into the hull. Crawling into a cockpit lazarette might allow inspection of the drain conduits under the cockpit sole.

Thanks Benny, I'll se what I can find.

Richard Bryer

Richard Bryer

If the drains (scuppers) are like my 24 had, they are straight down through the stern lazarette and out just under the water line. You may be able to see the obstruction with a light from the top. A straight iron rod might loosen it.

Thank you Richard, too bad there isn't an plumbing schematic on these boats

Sorry, Alexvw- my wording is not quite accurate- the tubes go down through the crawl space under the cockpit, not the lazarette.

Alex D

Hi, Any pictures on your boat I'm looking to buy a 1979 San Juan 23 any ideas or advice. I'm Boca Raton Fl. aadamiani@ gmail.com Thank you!

Good morning Alex D, I can't really give you a professional opinion, with that said, I've use the boat 5 times since purchase (July 2016, it seats at the St Cloud marina , and I sail on Lake Toho. The idea of purchase was to teach my kids about sailing, easy and quick access to it (instead of driving to the coast). So far the boat delivered , rigging is solid, maneuverability is good, I've single piloted this boat with no too much work (and I don't have a rolling furling for forward sail). The previous owner installed an electrical system with two batteries and a air conditioning (dock use only). It has the retractable Keel and Rudder, great for my area. It needs to have some hull Buffing (don't know how) and some other cosmetic stuff. Over roll I'm happy. Let me know how else I can help. Alex.

Great Thank you, happy sailing!

San Juan 23... with no centerboard???

23 san juan sailboat

  • Add to quote

I am looking at purchasing a San Juan 23 sailboat in Portland, Oregon. Some attached pics for your viewing pleasure. The current owner says that it has NEVER had the drop-down centerboard. I tried, diplomatically, to inform him that the SJ23s were all built with the centerboard dropping down from the pocket in the stub keel. Am I correct??? He also mentioned that there was one weld that had broken. If you look at the picture of the stub keel, you will see something like a "curved wing keel" thing apparently welded to the bottom of the stub keel. The "curved wing keel" is my wording... not the current owner's. I'd appreciate any info/thoughts on this. The asking price for boat+trailer is $2750. He seems anxious to please his wife by "needing it gone." But I'm not looking for a project boat...no matter how cheap. I was feeling positive about this potential purchase, but after speaking with the owner regarding the absence of the drop-down centerboard... not so much. I will be seeing the boat tomorrow (Wed May 29) and will inspect the keel. I will also look inside the cabin where the crank should be that is used to raise/lower the centerboard. Let me know your thoughts/suggestions. Thanks. Hal Nash Waldport OR

Is it just me, or does that "wing" keel look welded on? Maybe they ditched the swing keel for this "solution"?

It does look extremely uhm.. home made? And looks like the wing is rusting at the welds so probably not properly protected. Not sure how well, or how long, that'll stay on there.

23 san juan sailboat

Ah, the fond memories. A San Juan 23 was the first boat I owned that was large enough to sleep on board. Nice sturdy little boat that sailed surprisingly well. That wing thing does look like quite the kluge. I am quite certain that they all came, originally, with the swing keel. And, as hnash53 said, it absolutely makes a difference when sailing close to the wind. Unless the price is almost too good to be true, I think I would walk away. Depending on how that wing was added, it might be a HUGE amount of work to undo it. Good luck, whatever you decide.

23 san juan sailboat

If there was a picture in the urban dictionary next to the phrase, "Run! Don't Walk away" That keel would be it. In their day these were decent but not exceptional boats. Someone has taken this one and screwed it up royally. That alteration is clearly home made and badly so. And if they lacked sufficient knowledge to know why this was a really bad idea, I hate to see what else has been perpetrated upon this poor boat. Getting that pile of rusting steel off of the bottom of the keel may be doable but it won't be easy to do neatly and the clean-up will be time consuming. But beyond that, you have will have no idea what shape the centerboard slot is in and whether it is still usable. That boat was not designed to carry the added weight of the ad hoc wings so you can't be certain what shape the fiberglass is in. If you bought it you would need to figure out what shape and size to build the centerboard, and then build it. Building a centerboard is not all that hard, but it takes some skill and time to do. Assuming you get that right, you will need to build a centerboard lift mechanism. In the case of the San Juan, there was fold down centerline table that had a welded aluminum table frame that has a block and tackle system built onto it that was part of the centerboard lift mechanism. The lift cable came up through that table leg and exited at a sheave just below the table top. And while I don't know the market out where you are, small trailerable boats on trailers for well less than $3,000 are pretty common around here. Just keep looking until a good one comes along. Has anyone out there have the specifications for the sj23/81 center board. 36x6x1 I think. Hole placement I believe would be critical in a 68 lbs hunk of iron Thanks Bruce

I have a diagram of the centerboard that I made specifically for my beloved San Juan 23. It has done well for about 5 years without maintenance, but in my seasonal shakedown, this year 2023, we discovered that the lift hole in the center board rusted through and released the line we were using. we originally planned on using a stainless steel padeye for the lift attach point but had to change plans when we discovered there wasn’t enough room. To solve that issue, minutes before putting her in the water, we simply drilled a hole, filed it smooth and threaded some 3/16 Amsteel directly through it. The Amsteel has held up with no visible abrasion. I store the center board in the up position, possibly for superstitious reasons. The weight of the centerboard and rust eventually let the Amsteel pull through the side of the hole. If or when I rebuild the center board, I will have another bronze bushing pressed into the centerboard for the lift hole. Centerboard pdf

While this does not directly answer your question, it might provide you with some leads. First of all, the San Juan 23 was designed by Bruce Kirby (of Laser fame). While Bruce passed on last summer, he is survived by his wife Margo, and Margo may be able to provide you with drawings(possibly for a fee) or advise you on where Bruce's work is archived, and the archive may be able to provide you with a drawing. There was a San Juan 23 class association: You might reach out to them if they still exist, There is also a little information here: SJ23 Tech Tip H06 - SJ23 Operating Manual There is still a San Juan 21 class association. San Juan 21 Class Association I reached out to them when I was helping restoring a San Juan 30 a couple summers ago and was directed to someone who knew the San Juan 30's quite well. If nothing else, the San Juan Class association may be able to tell you who built the centerboards for the San Juans and you might be able contact that company (if they are still in business) and get drawings There are some pretty detailed drawings of the San Juan 21 centerboard in this document: http://sj21class.org/pdf/san_juan_21_handbook_jan06_2006.pdf While it will not exactly match the San Juan 23 centerboard, it may give you some clues if you hit a dead end. Good luck, Jeff

  21. San Juan 23... with no centerboard???

A San Juan 23 was the first boat I owned that was large enough to sleep on board. Nice sturdy little boat that sailed surprisingly well. That wing thing does look like quite the kluge. I am quite certain that they all came, originally, with the swing keel. And, as hnash53 said, it absolutely makes a difference when sailing close to the wind.
