Vacationing on a cruise ship? That's great, but for the love of all that is nautical, please don't call it a boat.

Modern-day cruise behemoths have earned the right to be called ships. The name is grand, it implies stature, and it lets everyone know that there's some sort of official larger purpose, whether it's the transportation of goods or of people.

What's the official difference between a boat and a ship? Technically, there isn't one that's universally accepted. Everyone seems to have their own ideas about what defines each, with no final verdict. Some say it has to do with size or tonnage, while others argue it's about how many masts the vessel has or whether it's a submarine (which, I'm told, is always a boat). Still others claim it's more about the bodies of water on which a vessel is designed to spend its days.

Regardless, the one certainty is that you'll sound like you have no idea what you're talking about if you refer to a cruise vessel — except maybe a riverboat — as a boat instead of a ship. In that vein, to help you understand the differences, let's take a look at some of the most popular differentiators, depending on whom you ask.

Vessel size

When you ask the average person what makes a vessel a ship versus a boat, they'll often tell you that it comes down to size. A ship is big; a boat is small. That seems to be the most common consensus, but those terms are arbitrary. What constitutes large and small?

In researching, I've discovered there's no official length at which a vessel becomes a ship. Sources cite everything from 100 feet to 200 feet in length and everything in between.

In terms of height, some seafarers insist that any vessel with more than one deck is a ship, and anything with only a single deck is a boat, as presented by The Guardian via a reader in the paper's Semantic Enigmas section.

Another common size-related refrain — one that's used by the United States Naval Institute — is that if a vessel is large enough to carry other vessels, it's a ship.

"In general, a boat is a watercraft ... that is small enough to be carried on board a larger one, and that larger one is a ship," said Lt. Cmdr. Thomas J. Cutler in a blog post on the USNI's website . "This is sometimes expressed this way: 'A ship can carry a boat, but a boat can never carry a ship.'"

Vessel tonnage

Tonnage is another determinant some entities use to qualify vessels as ships instead of boats. In fact, the maritime information website Marine Insight claims it's one of the most important factors to consider.

Vessels of more than 500 tons, regardless of size, are ships, according to the site.

Where the vessel sails

I recently sailed on my first U.S. river cruise, during which a lecturer explained that boats are specifically built for inland waterways, such as lakes and rivers. "This is a boat, despite its size," she said, also noting that it carries lifeboats (which would make it a ship by some definitions).

Supporting this theory is Scientific American , which quotes The Straight Dope (Cecil Adams, the self-proclaimed smartest man in the world) as saying, "With regard to motorized craft, a ship is a large vessel intended for oceangoing or at least deep-water transport, and a boat is anything else."

How the vessel corners

A handful of online query results say another way to tell a ship from a boat is by observing the direction in which it leans when it turns.

"A U.S. Navy rule of thumb is that ships lean towards the outside of a sharp turn, while boats lean towards the inside," The Maritime Post said. For a more relatable visual, think about a motorcycle versus a car. The former leans in as you go around a turn; the latter leans away from the center of the turn.

Vessel propulsion and design

As you might expect from a larger vessel, ships often have more complex construction than boats. They also have more machinery on board than boats do, whether that's in the way of navigation or engine room accouterments.

Further, how they're propelled might differ. Most modern-day ships are powered by engines, whereas boats can be moved by anything from oars or sails to engines, according to Marine Insight .

Number of masts on the vessel

In terms of sailing vessels, if a rig has three masts or more, it's considered a ship, per the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts. To qualify, it must also have square sails on all masts.

Obviously, most modern-day cruise ships don't have masts. (Exceptions are ships from Windstar and Star Clippers.) Although this rule is less relevant today, it does come up frequently in maritime circles when discussing the difference between a ship and a boat.

Bottom line

There's no hard-and-fast rule when it comes to determining whether a vessel is a ship or a boat. Generally, the most common ideas about this seem to revolve around size: tonnage, number of decks or whether or not the vessel can carry other boats.

Lots of people will have opinions about the "correct" criteria, but the bottom line is that you should never refer to a cruise ship as a boat if it carries travelers on the ocean for vacation.

Boat vs. Ship vs Yacht: What’s the Difference?

Language is a tricky thing, and picking out the differences between similar terms can be confusing. This is especially true when some of the definitions overlap. This is the case with the case of boat vs. ship vs. yacht . What’s the difference? We know in our gut that there are differences between these three seafaring vessels, but unless you’re a harbor master do you really know what counts as what?

Let’s get into some definitions, and we’re going to start with the easiest to explain: What is a yacht? What is a ship? And what is a boat?

Yacht vs. Ship vs. Boat

What is a yacht.

A yacht, I think everyone would agree, is fancier than a ship or a boat. “Yacht” infers some amount of luxury , and definitely recreation. There’s also something to be said about size. A yacht tends to be anywhere between 35 feet up to 160 feet. And some yachts, known as superyachts, go even beyond that. (Jeff Bezos just built a 417 foot yacht, but that’s really breaking yacht records.)

Because of the size, yachts tend to operate in larger bodies of water–generally the ocean. Yachts are able to handle rougher ocean waves, and they are also equipped with more advanced navigation and guidance instruments than smaller boats. Likewise, a yacht tends to have a full crew to help with the navigation, engineering, repairs, as well as having stewards that serve the yacht’s guests. This can be anywhere from a crew of four or five up to a crew of a few dozen on large yachts. 

One interesting thing to note is that outside of the United States, a yacht refers to a sailboat , and a motorized yacht is called a “motor yacht”. 

So, is a yacht a boat? Yes, technically a yacht is a boat. But a yacht is a very specific kind of boat.

What is a Ship?

The term ship is most commonly associated with a very large boat, and something that is not as fancy as a yacht (one exception is that cruise ships can still be very fancy, but are referred to as ships because of their size and power.)

Ships are generally so large that they would never be found in a lake, with some exceptions for the Great Lakes, and are made for navigating the high seas of the open ocean. An ship can refer to a cruise ship, a naval ship, a tanker, a container ship, and many other commercial vessels.

Ships tend to have advanced navigation and technology, but much more advanced than that of a yacht due to the size, the speed, and the routes that a ship will take. They are meant to be traversing the open ocean for very long periods of time, from one continent to the next, while a yacht may only rarely set across the ocean and most often stays somewhat near land. 

A ship will also have a much larger crew than a yacht or a boat. Ships are typically so large that they need not only one trained navigator but a set of navigators, plus an entire engineering team, and includes many more positions. 

Finally, a ship is meant to carry things. This may be passengers, yes (in reference to cruise ships and some navy ships) but most ships are for carrying cargo–or even carrying equipment to do work on other ships including repair work or refueling. 

What is a Boat?

Well, a boat is harder to define, because a yacht is technically a boat, and a ship is technically a boat. But when people refer to boats, they are almost always referring to something smaller than either a yacht or a ship. Boats may be motorized, like a speed boat, or they may sail, or they may be man-powered, like a rowboat or a kayak. Really, anything up to and including a liferaft, can be called a boat.

Why it’s time to consider a luxury yacht for your next vacation.

For most people, chartering a private yacht seems an unattainable dream- something that only the super-rich could ever afford. Most of us who dream of adventure and luxury at sea therefore settle for taking a cruise on one of the fancier liners. When we come into port we might look a little wistfully at the private yachts, but conclude that they would be too expensive to charter, too out of reach- even on our good incomes.

Todd Beechey founded OceanScape Yachts after having exactly that experience. While in Nassau on a cruise vacation, Todd and his wife wandered around the superyacht marina and dreamt of chartering a yacht one day- they even joked about winning the lotto. They concluded that it would be far too expensive, and thought it would remain just that- a dream, a fun conversation to pass the time on a sunny Bahamian afternoon. But the idea of chartering a yacht just wouldn’t let go.

So rather than leaving it at that, Todd decided to actually find out: How much is it to charter a yacht- and can luxury cruise ship passengers really make the switch to private yachts?

What he discovered-the secret that very few realize-is that  if a group of you are paying for the luxury experience on a cruise ship you could have actually all pitched together and chartered a private yacht instead.

And with more yachts flooding the market as the industry grows, the luxury yachting experience is becoming more affordable with each passing year.

Not only did Todd start chartering stunning yachts with his family and friends year after year, but the idea for OceanScape Yachts was born: the idea of making the extraordinary yachting experience attainable for people who had never imagined it was possible.

So, how expensive is chartering a yacht, really?

The luxury end of the cruise ship industry is undergoing a massive boom. We know that a great many of you are already spending at least $6,000+ per person on all-inclusive cruise vacations, which equates to $12,000 per cabin. We also know that lots of you are spending more than that again- in fact 34% of luxury cruise ship passengers are spending more than $7,000 per person. That’s a very good start towards a yacht charter vacation if you’ve got some friends who’d like to make the step up to luxury yachting.

It’s worth noting here that if you do travel as a couple and have no interest in travelling with friends or family, then the cruise ship option is a better option financially as you would have to absorb the entire cost of yacht charter on your own. (We’re not in the business of pulling the wool over your eyes.)

It’s when you travel with groups that things start to get very interesting on cost comparisons.

A private yacht has a license to sleep up to 12 guests, but at the smaller end 8 guests is more common, so let’s start with that to keep the comparisons realistic. If each person is spending $6,000 on a cruise ship vacation, you and your partner could raise $ 48,000 for a yacht charter by pooling your money together with just three other couples. (Of course, if you were to get a yacht with ten beds you could raise $60,000, and twelve beds you could raise $72,000 towards the cost of charter.)

Remember though, that while cruise ships tend to be all-inclusive or mostly so, on a private yacht you need to pay for food and beverage, fuel, berthing fees and tips on top of your base rate. That’s why OceanScape Yachts have an all-inclusive model available to keep costs transparent.

So let’s assume that using the eight-person model raising a total of $48,000 you can charter a yacht with a base rate of $32,000-with some money left over to pay for the extras.

What kind of yacht will we get for $32,000 a week?

I’m afraid you’re not going to get one of the ones you see on TV with a helipad and huge lap pool, but you will get a fantastic luxury yacht in the 80-100 foot range for that kind of money. As mentioned, it will probably have cabins for eight people, although the rare few will sleep up to 12.

In this size range the yacht will normally have two decks, a deeply comfortable main salon, dining areas and a larger master cabin. The yacht will carry a range of watertoys, AV equipment and will almost certainly have WIFI and flat screen TVs in all cabins. And of course, you’ll have a team of crew dedicated to you for the entire vacation- including the captain, stewardess and private chef.

If you put in a couple of thousand extra per person you can charter a yacht with a base rate of around $40-$45,000, at which point you can expect to get a larger, more luxurious yacht nearing the 100-120 foot mark, particularly on the older models. At this size of a yacht you will often get a Jacuzzi, a main deck master suite, larger deck spaces and an upper salon. You’ll also have a bigger crew, and potentially an extra cabin or two to bring the number of guests up and costs down. However, remember that berthing fees, fuel and tips will also go up with larger yachts, so take that into account when budgeting.

The total cost of your vacation on this size yacht will be in the range of $60-70,000 for the group- still quite comparable to the cost for that same group on a luxury cruise ship.

Why should I make the swap? What’s so great about private yachts?

We don’t mean to criticize cruise ships, but private yachts are another level of luxury entirely. The freedom is exquisite. You’ll speak to your captain each day about the itinerary, you can change your mind whenever you like, and above all, there are none of those awful orange boats bringing you back from a shore excursion when you’re simply not ready to leave. Don’t forget that the private yachts can get into the shallow anchorages and pretty marinas that cruise ships can’t hope to.

On a private yacht, the chef cooks just for you and your friends or family. They’re informed about your food preferences and any allergies, and the yacht is stocked with all your favourite things before you arrive. Each meal is served at a beautifully decorated table on deck and there are no buffet queues or complete strangers making small talk over dinner.

A yacht is an extremely private place to spend time with family and friends where the crew respect your personal space but are always discreetly on hand if you need anything. On a luxury cruise ship, much is made of the butler service, but that is restricted to your room, and when you’re roaming the ship you are just one of many hundreds of guests.

On a luxury yacht, the crew are dedicated just to you and no-one else, whether it’s the deckhand giving you another wakeboarding lesson, the chef grilling the fish you just caught for lunch, or the captain driving you to that nearby reef for a snorkel before breakfast. The stewardess or steward makes sure your cabin is always kept immaculate and keeps you constantly refreshed with food and drink. A yacht charter is all about freedom, privacy, superb food and wonderfully personalized service that cruise ships simply can’t match.

On a cruise ship, you’re just another number in the crowd. On a luxury yacht, you are the star.

Well, that may have been true in the Age of Sail, when the distinction between a sailing ship and a boat was clear. In modern times, however, the lines between these two terms have become blurred, and the simple distinction of size is no longer sufficient, leading to some confusion.

In this article, we’ll explore eight key differences that will not only help you distinguish between a boat and a ship, but also give you a deeper understanding of how these terms have evolved in today’s maritime world. Keep reading to uncover the details!

Before we learn the difference, let’s look at the definitions and origins of the two terms.

The term ship originates from the Old English word scip , which traditionally referred to larger seafaring vessels capable of undertaking long voyages to transport people or goods. Ships were historically vital for trade, warfare, and exploration.

On the other hand, boat derives from the Old Norse word bátr , which was used to describe smaller watercraft. Boats were typically employed in rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, often for fishing or short-distance travel or specific tasks.

Ability to Sail Long Distances

One of the most fundamental differences between a ship and a boat is their ability to travel long distances

Ships are typically designed to carry goods or passengers over long distances, including ocean voyages.

Examples of ships include passenger ships, oil tankers, cruise ships, aircraft carriers, and cargo ships.

They can carry large numbers of people, equipment, and goods, allowing them to travel across oceans and even between countries.

Boats, on the other hand, are generally designed for shorter distances or more specialized tasks.

Examples include yachts, jet boats, fishing boats, canoes, lifeboats and rescue boats .

They are mainly used for more straightforward journeys, such as moving between marinas, covering short distances or carrying out recreational activities close to the point of departure.

Size and Capacity

While no strict size boundaries distinguish ships from boats, in general, ships are significantly larger.

Ships often exceed 140 meters in length, with the largest container ship (MSC Irina) stretching beyond 400 meters! They typically weigh more than 10,000 tonnes and have substantial capacities for crew, cargo, and complex operations.

In contrast, boats are generally smaller. Their lengths can vary from 7 to 20 meters, depending on their type and purpose.

Unlike ships, boats are not designed to carry large amounts of cargo or passengers and have smaller structural sizes and displacements.

The distinction becomes blurred with large yachts, such as the superyacht Azzam, which measures 180 meters (590 feet) in length.

Despite their considerable accommodation space, fuel reserves, and provisions, large yachts are still classified as boats due to their primary function and design, which typically support short trips between islands.

Direction of Lean When Turning

Boats typically feature simpler designs. They are often open and lack complex structures—examples include canoes, sailboats, and fishing boats. Their center of gravity is generally below the freeboard.

Ships, on the other hand, have taller superstructures, usually consisting of multiple decks, expansive engine rooms, and large living areas. This construction places the center of gravity above the freeboard, giving ships a different stability profile.

From a naval perspective, there’s a clear and practical distinction. A ship will heel outward during a turn, while a boat will lean inward.

This difference occurs due to the way ships and boats handle turns. Ships turn with a rudder located above the keel, which causes them to lean outwards during a turn.

In contrast, small boats often rely on directional changes initiated by the propeller (such as jetboats and speedboats), making them lean inwards during a turn, with their undersides facing the water.

Purpose and Use

Boats are typically used for recreation, short-distance travel, or specialized tasks such as fishing or rescue operations.

They are often designed for brief excursions and don’t usually need to carry large amounts of supplies or equipment.

Ships, on the other hand, are built for long-duration operations and have the capability to operate independently for extended periods without needing to return to shore for resupply.

Equipped with advanced navigation systems, ships are ideal for freight transport, long-distance voyages, military operations, and various other commercial purposes, thanks to their larger carrying capacity and endurance.

Operational Areas

Another key differentiating factor is the environment in which they operate.

Ships are designed for deep-water, ocean-going voyages, and can withstand heavy sea conditions.

They are often used for international trade, long-distance travel, and military operations. Only well-equipped, large ships can navigate waters with higher sea states and rough conditions.

Boats, by contrast, are typically designed to operate in inland waters such as lakes, rivers, and coastal areas.

They are not built to handle the challenges of open oceans, where a single large wave could potentially capsize them.

So, when you see a vessel on the open ocean of the appropriate size and capacity, you can confidently call it a ship. But on inland waterways, smaller vessels are generally referred to as boats.

Evolution of technology

You might have heard the saying, “ A ship can carry a boat, but a boat cannot carry a ship. ”

For a long time, this was considered an undeniable truth—ships had the capacity to carry boats onboard, often transporting people or goods across the sea, while boats, by definition, were too small to carry ships.

However, in modern times, this saying is no longer as clear-cut. The boundaries between ships and boats have been blurred with the advancement of shipbuilding technology.

Floating docks now can carry massive ships such as warships and cruise ships. They can load, transport, and even sail with these colossal vessels onboard.

Linguistically, there isn’t a strict line separating the terms “ship” and “boat,” so context is crucial when using these terms.

Generally, shipowners and maritime professionals may take offense if their ship is referred to as a boat, viewing it as a sign of disrespect towards their profession and the vessel’s significance.

In maritime traditions, it’s common for sailors to affectionately refer to their ships as “boats,” similar to how one might name a personal car.

While this is acceptable within the crew, non-crew members should be cautious. For example, a new sailor referring to a warship as a “boat” might upset the captain, who may firmly correct them, saying, “It’s a ship!”

Ownership and Accessibility

Generally, acquiring a small boat or yacht is relatively straightforward and affordable for individuals. The cost ranges from approximately $50,000 to $500,000 USD, making it accessible for personal enjoyment.

Owners typically do not need to employ a large crew; they can simply bring family or friends along for recreational purposes.

In contrast, ships are usually owned by large organizations such as shipping companies or navies and come with substantial operational costs.

Individuals generally cannot purchase ships due to their complexity and expense.

Operating a ship requires a professional crew, including skilled technicians, sailors, navigators, engineers, and a commanding officer, to manage its intricate systems and ensure safe and efficient operation.

So what are Vessels?

The term “vessel” comes from the Latin word vassis, meaning “container,” originally referring to something that holds or carries.

In the maritime world, it is a broad term that applies to any watercraft navigating the seas, rivers, or lakes, regardless of size or function—ranging from small recreational boats to massive oil tankers.

“Vessel” is a universally recognized and formal term often used in legal, regulatory, and technical contexts, symbolizing the authority and structure of maritime operations.

Interestingly, maritime professionals use “vessel” for convenience to describe anything that floats on water, be it a ship, boat, or even a simple piece of driftwood.

So, when you’re uncertain whether to call something a “ship” or a “boat,” you can never go wrong by referring to it as a “vessel.”

Are Submarines Ships or Boats?

Reading this, you might wonder: submarines can float and sink, so which category do they fall into—boat or ship?

While submarine sailors often refer to submarines as “boats,” submarines are technically and normatively considered ships.
