Boating licences and qualifications are not a requirement for charter hire however, your experience and boating know how is important to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment on board. A comprehensive half day briefing is included, but if you are low on experience we will suggest spending the first day with our Sail Guide . Or if you would prefer to have someone else do the navigating for you, hire a Sail Guide for the duration of your charter.

Welcome to the Whitsundays, Airlie Beach the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. If you are looking to explore the beautiful Whitsunday Islands, on your own time, we can provide a number of different options for you. Snorkelling, swimming, diving or just relaxing in the beautiful azure waters. All our boats are located at our floating office at Coral Sea Marina – Resort, South Village – Berth N00.

OUR LICENSED BOATS Our self-hire and drive Centre Cab, Sportrider and Yellowfin can get you out to all the islands and Whitehaven Beach. All you need is a valid Boat Licence – National or International. Our Kakadu Tinny and Smartwave Xtra, on a low wind day can take you to the South and North Molle Islands, around Daydream and to Long Island. The Tinny and Smartwave Xtra cannot get to the big islands of Whitehaven Beach.

OUR UNLICENSED BOATS Our Poly Boats are for our customers that don’t have a boat license and want to get out on the water to fish and sightsee with turtles and dugongs ever present in the Bay off Airlie Beach. These boats do have a restricted area and can not get to the islands.

GBRMPA Changes

As of 1st July 2023, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) is reinstating their Environmental Management Charge (EMC). All bookings on the Yellowfin 6.5m and 7m Southerner as well as the McLay 651 CrossXover will incur a fee of $8 per person (people aged 4 and over) per day, for the first three (3) days of the booking. This fee will manually be added onto your booking, and final numbers will be confirmed the day before your booking.

All fees for this are passed directly onto the GBRMPA for management of the reef.

“Our journey across to Hayman island and the wind protected northern anchorages of Hook island started at 730am and took 45mins @ 15-20 knots in the 5.7M Sportsrider. Within the main passage we had minor to moderate spray/bumps etc for 25 mins in a 15-20 km/h south easterly and outgoing tide.

Coming back mid-afternoon with the wind SE and stronger at 25-35 km/hr and tide incoming, we trimmed the nose up higher to minimise the spray and made way @ 8-10 knots….it was rough and wet for 35 mins across the main passage but worth every minute of that after the 6 lovely hours of scenery, fishing and relaxation we’d just spent enjoying over there out of the wind and waves!

We came prepared to get a bit damp and uncomfortable on our journey to see and experience something we knew was going to be really quite special.

We then went home super happy we’d made that effort.

A1 Boat hire Airlie beach is a great way to explore the Whitsunday at your Own leisure, if you want to get out and see the islands and the beautiful beaches or go for a dive and sea the beautiful reefs and fish around the islands or just go for a fish, 

A1 Boat hire is the way to go, if it's a bit windy to get out amongst the islands you may like to go for a look up Proserpine River for a look at the crocks and catch some mud crabs or fish for a barramundi up at lake Proserpine.

Only holders of a  current qld boat licence   (or other states equivalent power boat license) can drive the boat.

Before taking out the Centre Cab boat our skipper’s briefing will make sure your day on the water is a safe one.

After your briefing, if you are still not 100% confident, we offer additional sail training, which many of our novices pre-book to maximise their holiday enjoyment and safety.

With more than 40 anchorages, there is always a tranquil spot to lose yourself and at night you can gaze up at the endless expanse of starlit sky, sheltered from the breeze in an inlet or secluded bay.

You can choose a sailing yacht, a catamaran or a power cruiser, and you can go it alone or ask for a sail guide and hostess to accompany you. Vessels accommodate between two and 10 guests and are fully equipped with everything required for a comfortable stay – just bring your sunscreen, swimming gear, a hat and sunglasses… and a sense of adventure!

While on a bareboat charter, you decide your itinerary and the pace of your holiday – where you anchor each night and what activities you do around the Islands.

Some people have incredibly adventurous bareboat charters focused on sailing, resort hopping, hiking and snorkelling. Our friendly team will help you to plan your trip, suggest the best snorkelling spots, islands to visit and how to maximise your time during your private charter. During your private charter you’ll have the flexibility to request more time for snorkelling, relaxing or exploring, just ask your personal skipper. Your personal skipper’s are knowledgeable about the region and the best locations to visit depending on the time of year, weather, winds and tides. Feel free to ask your skipper about your trip during your private charter. They’ll be more than happy to share their experiences and recommendations of the Whitsundays.

HOW A PRIVATE CHARTER WORKS

Freedom Exclusive Charters allows you the flexibility to choose the duration of your private charter. You can choose from the Express 4 hour, Half Day 6 hour, Full Day 8 hour or Sunset Cruise 1.5 hour private charter options. During peak holiday season you can choose from the general time slots available for your private charter, although during the low holiday season the departure time can be quite flexible.

In the lead up to your private charter you will have the opportunity to chat with our helpful team about what you’d like to see and do. You can also discuss this with your personal skipper onboard your private charter, should you wish to see more or do less, the day is quite flexible. A private boat charter is different to bareboating as you are not required to skipper the vessel yourself.  Have the luxury to relax as our professional skippers and crew have all maritime qualifications.

There’s no need to think about the weather conditions, where to and how to anchor the boat or loading and unloading the vessel with equipment. You will have all the time in the world to spend with your nearest and dearest onboard your private charter vessel.

Choosing the right boat for your crew can be daunting. There is such a great variety to choose from depending on your experience, passenger numbers, and the type of holiday you want to have. And we are more than happy to help you finalise your options!

Whitsunday Escape boasts the largest bareboat fleet in the Whitsundays. The fleet consists of Power Catamarans, Sailing Catamarans and Sailing Yachts ranging from 39 ft to 50 ft, that can take from 2 – 12 passengers. With a diverse fleet of 38 Whitsunday charter boats, we have a boat to suit everyone.

Did you know you can hire a sailing catamaran and not use the sails? The layout of the catamarans might suit you better so they make a great choice for most people. All of our catamarans have twin engines, and some have similar speeds to the power boats.

If we don’t have a sailing boat available for your dates, maybe try a power boat this time, the flybridge is a lovely spot to relax and watch the world go by.
