Reichel/Pugh 66

  • By Dennis Caprio
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

_ Zaraffa_ is a 66-foot lightweight speedster that is all business outside and surprisingly livable inside. Her owner is a pragmatic New Englander with a seriously competitive nature and an uncompromising taste for exceptional speed and handling in his cruising yachts. Zaraffa is the product of his vision as interpreted by Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design and rendered by New England Boatworks of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. She’s beautiful in the same way the Le Mans-winning Audi R8 race car is beautiful, but Zaraffa is wonderfully usable for so much more than racing.

If Nathanael Herreshoff were alive today, he would love the ambience belowdecks. She has a simple fully equipped interior, some of which can be removed to lighten the boat for racing. If you like simplicity, you’ll find her accommodations inviting. She doesn’t have a liner, but New England Boatworks faired and painted the back side of the laminate to a satiny off-white. Blond beechwood trims the edges of the counters, companionways and other bits of molded furniture, and the teak/holly sole anchors the décor. Cedar ceilings in the saloon add a touch of warmth. The high-gloss table at the dinette almost seems out of place.

Reichel/Pugh and the owner wisely avoided the temptation to cram accommodations into the boat’s ends. The living and sleeping spaces occupy about the same volume as the accommodations of a 55-foot dedicated cruising yacht. Concentrating the mass over or near the center of buoyancy limits the pitching motion to an acceptable level. Pitching robs the sail plan of its drive, which slows any boat, but is especially pronounced in very lightweight boats, such as Zaraffa .

I like having the galley so close to the center of the boat’s pitching axis because motion there will be minimal, allowing the cook to work fairly comfortably at sea. This tight, U-shape galley ought to be a safe, efficient work space. A watermaker and real refrigeration get their operating juice from a power takeoff at the front of the auxiliary. Both pieces of equipment add to the pleasure of cruising and will keep the racing crew clean and fed.

Opposite the galley and separated from it by the engineroom is a compact, fully found navigation station. It’s a cozy U shape defined at the forward end by the starboard-side settee and at the after end by the navigator’s berth. The work space is divided almost evenly into a counter forward and aft, joined by a narrow counter running along the side of the hull. A fiddled shelf, parallel to this narrow counter just above eye level, is a great place for reference books, though I’d stow them elsewhere when the weather gets nasty. The liferaft and abandon-ship grab bag also stow in the navigator’s area.

Having the owner’s stateroom under the cockpit suits me just fine. It can’t have standing headroom everywhere, but you’ll find it where you need it-in the head and the dressing area right abaft the engineroom. Zaraffa carries a large percentage of her maximum beam well aft, so the after cabin isn’t as claustrophobic as its location suggests. Overhead hatches and a companionway from the after cockpit naturally brighten and ventilate the space. A tiny desk hung onto the engineroom’s after bulkhead holds a laptop PC, which displays navigational data. Two Pullman berths, one above the master and the other over a built-in single opposite the master double, add sleeping space for overnight races. The forward stateroom has two built-in singles, two Pullmans and a private head. All the Pullmans adjust to compensate for the boat’s heeling angle, so the crew can sleep on the level.

You’ll want to invite a few friends if you expect to use all the sail plan’s power, because none of the sail-handling gear benefits from power assist. In this boat’s racing class, power assist isn’t permitted. A pair of Lewmar coffee grinders, one in the after cockpit for the mainsail and one in the forward cockpit for the headsails, provide enough mechanical advantage to quickly trim the sails.

For most of my years at Yachting , I carried weather with me on every boat test and delivery passage. I think it lived in the image of the Tasmanian Devil embroidered on the back of my favorite sailing shirt. When he began playing too rough too frequently, I left him home more often than not. I missed him, though, when I sailed Zaraffa on Narragansett Bay one steamy light-air day in August. Skipper Roger Erker, along with a few of his regular crew and a couple volunteers, had invited me to join in a day of testing and instrumentation calibration.

We sailed under main and 145 genoa in winds of no more than 12 knots true. Beating down the bay toward Newport, Zaraffa showed 7.5 to 8 knots in 11 to 12 knots of true wind speed and 31 degrees of true wind angle. At one point, the apparent wind angle tightened to the impossibly narrow angle of 21 degrees, but Zaraffa didn’t slow. For this stellar windward ability we can thank her 12 feet of draft, the plan form of her keel and the deep, powerful rudder. Her steering was light and delightfully quick (2.25 turns from lock to lock), so corrections required a sensitive touch to prevent oversteering. Tacking was lightning quick and as sure as the sunrise.

By the time we finished tacking down the bay, the wind abandoned us. We broad reached up the bay in an average wind speed of 5 knots, making wind speed or better, depending on how attentive we were to sail trim and steering inputs. A short time before we dropped sail and fired up the Yanmar, Zaraffa gave us 4.75 knots in a true wind speed of 3.5 knots.

Reichel/Pugh has expertly juggled the small waterplane area with a flat run and the broad shoulders the yacht needs for offwind planing, so she’s fast in most wind conditions. Her underbody is a squished semicircle but is flat in way of the keel. Her entry is fine and steep. This combination of characteristics and her light weight promise a lively motion at sea, more or less comfortable depending on the length of the waves.

Zaraffa and her ilk aren’t for every sailor. High-performance boats, like their automotive counterparts, require a high level of commitment and skill, which is exactly the reason some of us fall in love with them. They stretch our abilities. A sophisticated boat of this sort could sell for about $1.2 to $2 million, depending on how high-tech you want the laminate and how you outfit her. Price, though, is irrelevant when you know what you want and where to get it.

Welcome to Alive Yachting

ALIVE is a 66 foot canting keel Reichel Pugh racing yacht. She is currently racing out of Brisbane and registered with the Derwent Sailing Squadron, Tasmania.

ALIVE was purchased at the beginning of 2014 by Tasmanian businessman and entrepreneur Phillip Turner.

ALIVE is skippered by a Tasmanian, Duncan Hine, running a generally non-professional crew of Brisbane and Tasmanian sailors.

At 66 foot ALIVE fits into the ‘mini-maxi’ size category.

However, her narrow and light hull combined with powerful new Southern Spars rig makes her a technically advanced and challenging boat.

Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race departs with RP66 Alive sailing double-handed

The 343 nautical mile Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race, hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, began on Thursday 20 June following a lengthy delay as the race committee waited for the breeze to reach the starting area.

The early lead was taken by double-handed entry Balancing Act, the J/99 co-skippered by Tony Crander & Andrew Turnbull-Miller.

However it was Alive, the Sydney-Hobart winning RP66 co-skippered by Duncan Hine and Glen Myler, that made the most of the building breeze, quickly moving to the front of the fleet of seven, but for the first time also sailing in the double-handed division.

“This is the first time the boat has endeavoured to do a two-handed race, so we’re pretty excited about that”, said Alive co-skipper Duncan Hine prior to the race.

The boat is racing under the same handicap as when it won the Tattersall Cup, the Rolex Sydney Hobart overall last year, with those additional crew, and full sail suite on board.

“Trying to work out how to do all the functions on the boat which is designed for twelve people to race when there’s now just two of us in there makes it pretty exciting. The forecast is not very favourable to us. We’ll be racing very conservatively, just trying to get a handle on the job basically”, he confessed.

“It’s a great race and a great club and it’s really good to have this race at this time of the year”, Hine concluded, and while being modest continues to lead even in tough conditions.

“We’ve had an interesting day for the start of the race”, said Mark Gallagher, Race Director.

“First off we had our Race Officer fall sick, so we had to scramble for another Race Officer, and luckily Louise Davis, one of our Club Race Officers was available and she stepped up to the plate at exceptionally short notice”, he said.

“We knew the conditions were going to be light, but they were lighter than expected”, he continued.

“We attempted to get a start away at 1100 on schedule, unfortunately in the last 30 seconds, the breeze dropped out completely, and it wouldn’t have been a fair start for competitors”.

“We hoisted the AP and waited and watched the weather in our vicinity and to the North. It certainly was not looking good. But just before 1400 which was going to be our cutoff time, the breeze kicked in, thank goodness! We were able to very quickly get a race away, at 1406, just three hours behind schedule”.

The competitors on clearing Moreton Bay and the turning mark will then continue north on the course to pass Lady Elliot and Lady Musgrave Islands, and onto the finish line off Keppel Bay Marina.

Despite the delay, the first finishers are expected late on Saturday 22 June with a change expected tonight to give competitors a speedy run home to the finish.

Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race Departs

Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race departs with RP66 Alive sailing

Double-handed.

The 343 nautical mile Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race, hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, began on Thursday 20 June following a lengthy delay as the race committee waited for the breeze to reach the starting area.

And finally a huge thank you to our sponsors, Yacht Sales Co, Club Marine, XXXX, Robert Oatley and Keppel Bay Marina, without which this regatta simply wouldn’t be possible.

The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show 2012

Moscow Boat Show 2012

The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.

Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.

Moscow Boat Show a Great Success

More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.

Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.

The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.

The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.

A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.

Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.

Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.

The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.

Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.

The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.

Investigation found that Clarence Thomas took free yacht, helicopter trips in Russia: Democrats

A Senate Judiciary Committee investigation found that conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose at least 35 luxury gifts, including a free yacht trip to Russia and a private helicopter to a palace in St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin's hometown, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and Ron Wyden, D-Or., said  in a letter  to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The letter raised the "serious possibility of tax fraud" and accused Thomas of having "secretly accepted gifts and income potentially worth millions of dollars," mostly from billionaire real estate developer Harlan Crow, who Thomas once described as being among his "dearest friends." Buried in appendix list on page 14 are the references to the Russia trips, which took place in 2003. Other gifts from Crow include "multiple instances of free private jet travel, yacht travel, and lodging," "gifts of tuition for Justice Thomas's grandnephew," "real estate transactions," "home renovations," and "free rent for Justice Thomas's mother."

“The Senate is not a prosecutorial body, and the Supreme Court has no fact-finding function of its own, making the executive role all the more important if there is ever to be any complete determination of the facts,” the letter reads.

After a bombshell ProPublica report last year that revealed the extent of Thomas' financial ties with Crow and attempts to hide it, Thomas admitted to taking three trips on a private plane owned by Crow, but did not disclose any of the other gifts.

The senators are asking Garland to launch a special counsel investigation into Thomas, with the evidence collected so far "plainly suggest[ing] that Justice Thomas has committed numerous willful violations of federal ethics and false-statement laws and raises significant questions about whether he and his wealthy benefactors have complied with their federal tax obligations."

In a separate move on Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and a group of fellow progressives filed articles of impeachment against Thomas and Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for failing to disclose "millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court."

San Francisco-based data infrastructure startup Cribl has raised $319 million in a Series E funding tranche led by new investor GV (Alphabet's corporate venture arm) with participation from GIC, CapitalG, IVP and CRV. Bringing Cribl's total raised to $600 million, the cash injection values the company at $3.5 billion -- up around 40% from Cribl's Series D valuation in 2022. As a part of the deal, GV general partner Michael McBride will join Cribl's board of directors.

Terms of the deal are not being disclosed, but we understand that the deal involves a mix of cash and shares in GrubMarket. Paris court explains why it's arrested Telegram founder, Pavel Durov

When Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of messaging app Telegram, was arrested on August 24, French authorities did not respond to requests for comment. The secrecy of pre-trial investigations and inquiries is an important principle in the French judicial system. French television network TF1 reported that the main issues are Telegram’s (lack of) moderation processes and unwillingness to cooperate with law enforcement, especially when it comes to drug trafficking, money laundering and child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

OpenAI, Adobe and Microsoft support California bill requiring watermarks on AI content

OpenAI, Adobe and Microsoft have thrown their support behind a California bill requiring tech companies to label AI-generated content, according to letters from the companies viewed by TechCrunch. OpenAI, Adobe and Microsoft are part of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, which helped create C2PA metadata -- a widely used standard for marking AI-generated content. A trade group representing Adobe, Microsoft and the nation's largest software makers previously opposed AB 3211 in April, calling the bill "unworkable" and "overly burdensome" in a letter to California lawmakers.

Beam Mobility secretly deployed ‘phantom’ e-scooters in Australia and NZ to dodge fees and boost profits

Shared e-scooter startup Beam Mobility has placed hundreds of extra “phantom” scooters on city streets in Australia and New Zealand to avoid paying vehicle registration fees to local governments, according to a two-part report from The Australian. Cities place caps on the number of vehicles operators can deploy to avoid saturating streets and sidewalks with scooters that could endanger pedestrians. The Australian’s scoop includes leaked Slack messages and other documents detailing how Beam provided false data to independent monitoring app Ride Report to understate the number of scooters in cities such as Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Auckland and Wellington.

Reichel/Pugh Design Nᴼ 256 – 68’ Fast Performance Cruiser Comfortable cruising, day sailing and racing all in one beautiful yacht

Builder Baltic Yachts notes, “This spectacular 68ft silver-hulled, fast cruiser/racer for a repeat customer should deliver a highly rewarding sailing experience for her short-handed crew. The all carbon composite fixed keeler is bristling with performance enhancing features including a powerful square-top main, a retractable propulsion system, race boat style appendages and titanium fittings, plus a sophisticated and comfortable interior. As her captain said: “This is as a high performing cruising yacht that can excel on the race course.” A captive winch-controlled mainsheet and a powered winch for the asymmetric hoist take the weight out of handling. Displacing just 17 tons, almost 8 tons of which is in the keel, her advanced composite hull is built of pre-preg carbon over a Kevlar honeycomb core with Corecell used in slamming areas. A lot of attention was paid to fairing the bottom and appendages to the same standard as the topsides. Build time was just 18 months.”

Team members Tony Beale and Dan Flanigan had a successful set of sailing sea trials of the Reichel/Pugh 68 built by Baltic Yachts, and were on hand to help the sailing team hoist and test the well-designed and engineered North Sails suite! These tests included the Square Top Main, medium Jib, number three jib, mast head genoa, R1, and A2. The sails fit the boat beautifully, and the feedback is that the boat is fast and stiff! “Slippery” was the term that seemed to come up again and again! Tony and Dan both got time helming and trimming, bringing the design and engineering experience full circle. Tony Beale the lead Naval Architect on the project said, “the sea trials proved a great success. I believe the boat will exceed the Client’s expectations and prove to be a timeless design, thanks to the contributions of the Client and many great companies. Everyone should be proud of their involvement in this build.” Dan Flanigan, the lead engineer on the project stated, “Baltic did a great job building the boat. Over the course of three days we had the opportunity to load up all of the major structural components, and as expected we had no issues at all. The attention to detail in the build process has been excellent, and I could not be happier with the final result!” A special thanks to Mathias Flink , the Baltic yachts project manager, for giving the R/P team a true Finnish experience during their visit! Mathias invited them to his home where they enjoyed his floating sauna, complete with a cold dip into the lake, and a delicious meal of smoked fish and potatoes.

This project has been immensely rewarding for the RP team, working with a top notch team and client. The boat heads to Southern California next and we will check back in then! Check out the video of the cold but beautiful sailing in Finland on the RP68!

And stay tuned for compete technical details in the upcoming Jan 2017 edition of Seahorse Magazine, which reaches readers on Nov 19th via the electronic version.

Monte-Carlo (August 24, 2019) – The 15th edition of the Palermo-Montecarlo marked the fifth and final event of the International Maxi Association’s Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge 2018-2019 and fielded fifty-one boats this year.

Miguel Galuccio’s Reichel/Pugh 84’ maxi Vera (formerly My Song ) was first to cross the finish line winning one of the Giuseppe Tasca d’Almerita Trophy . Vera’s crew, including Dutch Volvo Ocean Race legend Bouwe Bekking and Olympic champion Michele Regolo, completed nearly 500 miles of racecourse (on the direct route) in two days, 17 hours and 13 minutes — smashing the record set by Esimit Europa 2 in 2015. Esimit Europa 2 is a Reichel/Pugh-designed 100’ canting keel supermaxi, first launched as Alfa Romeo and is now the Australia-based Black Jack . (more…)

Sheldon, who began his sailing career as a student, commissioned Reichel/Pugh Design No. 96 Zaraffa as a dual-purpose racer-cruiser, built by New England Boatworks and launched in 1999. A rugged design, Sheldon never wanted the boat to be the cause of not finishing a race. Zaraffa competed in the 2001 Fastnet race winning class and taking 2 nd overall. She raced the Newport-Bermuda four times, claiming the 2002 Lighthouse Trophy win on the crew’s second attempt. She was also first-to-finish with overall honors on the 2003 North Atlantic Challenge from Newport to Cuxhaven, Germany, and in 2011 Zaraffa was 1st Corrected IRC 3 in the Transatlantic Race.  She has also raced the Sydney Hobart, Miami to Montego Bay, Round Gotland Race and the Middle Sea Race. In 2018, after a retrofit for the Transatlantic Race, the Sheldon family bestowed the USNA Sailing Team with the gift of Zaraffa for offshore training. (more…)

Phillip Turner’s Australian-based Alive Yachting team most notably won the 2018 Sydney-Hobart overall, and recently swept 2019 California Offshore races with back-to-back line honor wins in the SoCal 300 (Santa Barbara to San Diego), Coastal Cup (Monterey to Santa Barbara), Spinnaker Cup (San Francisco Bay to Monterey), and Newport-Ensenada Race.

HIGHLIGHTS OF REICHEL/PUGH TRANSPAC HISTORY

Reichel Pugh Maxi’s have held the Transpac Course Record for nearly two decades, from 1999 (Roy Disney’s 75’ Pyewacket Maxi Sled) until 2017 (broken by Comanche – setting the new Merlin trophy elapsed time record at 5 days 01:55:26). Until 2017, the record had been broken 4 times since 1999 – always by Reichel/Pugh designed yachts. R/P yachts have won the Barn Door Trophy 7 out of 10 editions of the race since 1999.

Reichel/Pugh’s original sled design, the 70’ Taxi Dancer took 1st place in Class A in the 1989 Transpac and second overall, this was during the heyday of the California Sleds when Class A of the 1989 race featured 19 Sleds. Thirty years later, Taxi Dancer is still racing!

2015 – WILD OATS XI – Roy Pat Disney’s and Bob Oatley’s 100’ Canting Keel SuperMaxi Wild Oats XI had the fastest elapsed time of 6d 10h 37m 2s to win the 2015 Merlin Trophy and take first in Division 1 at the Transpac’s Diamond Head finish line. Wild Oats XI is a 100-foot custom design famous for its record nine elapsed time victories in thirteen years (2005-2008, 2018) and three overall fleet wins (2014, 2012 & 2005) in the Sydney-Hobart race.

2015 – GRAND ILLUSION – Ed & James McDowell’s Santa Cruz 70 Grand Illusion was the overall winner. She was designed by Bill Lee and features Reichel/Pugh-designed keel and rudder appendages. Grand Illusion has now equaled the record for most overall Transpac wins, joining the 88′ Lurline which won the first two races in 1906 and 1908, and again in 1912. However, Grand Illusion holds the status alone for winning overall three times under the same Owner/Skipper, Ed & James McDowell.

2013 – RP74 WIZARD – David and Peter Askew’s 74’ Reichel/Pugh-designed and New England Boatworks-built Mini-Maxi WIZARD (formerly Bella Mente) finished ‘first’ in the 2013 Transpac Race winning the unique Transpacific Yacht Club’s Perpetual Trophy – a 3.5’ x 4’ plaque of hand carved Hawaiian Koa Wood – better known as the ‘Barn Door.’ This trophy is traditionally awarded to the fixed keel mono-hull employing no stored energy with the fastest elapsed time. Wizard’s elapsed time was 7 days, 7 hours, 53 minutes, 46 seconds, which was 12 hours and 13 minutes slower than Bella Mente’s Barn Door record run of 6 days 19 hours 39 minutes 28 seconds set in 2011.

2011 – RP74 BELLA MENTE – Hap Fauth’s 74’ Mini Maxi BELLA MENTE set a new fixed keel course record of 6 days 19 hours 39 minutes 28 seconds with an average speed of 13.6 knots.

2011 – RPTP52 PATCHES – Jorge Ripsteins R/P-designed TP52 PATCHES won Division 2 followed by R/P designs CRIMINAL MISCHIEF 45’ and VINCITORE 52’.

2011 – GRAND ILLUSION – Ed and James McDowell’s Santa Cruz 70 featuring R/P-designed appendages took first in division and first in fleet overall on corrected time.

2009 – RP100 ALFA ROMEO II – 1st to Finish (Lending Tree got a DNS!) 5 days 14 hours 36m 20s) (Moveable Ballast & Powered Winches Course Record). N. Crichton’s Alfa Romeo II, sailing in the “unlimited” class, was not eligible for the traditional “Barn Door” trophy, but instead was the inaugural winner of a new trophy dedicated by Trisha Steele, called the “Merlin Trophy”. On July 7, 2009, ALFA ROMEO II beat the MORNING GLORY record for best day’s run set in the 2005 race, by sailing 399nm in 24 hours. The next two days she broke her own best-day record by sailing 420nm and 431nm.

2005 – RP86 MORNING GLORY – 1st to Finish (SET NEW RECORD 6 days, 16 hours, 4 minutes, and 11 seconds to win “the Barn Door” trophy) (Moveable Ballast Course Record) – H. Plattner

2005 – RP52 ROSEBUD – 1st Class & 1st Fleet Corrected Overall – R. Sturgeon

2003 – RP77 PEGASUS – 1st to Finish Barn Door Trophy Winner – P. Kahn

2001 – RP75 PEGASUS – 1st to Finish Barn Door Trophy Winner, 2nd Fleet Overall Corrected – P. Kahn

1999 – RP73 PYEWACKET – 1st to Finish Barn Door Trophy Winner (SET NEW RECORD 7 days, 11 hours, 41 minutes, and 27 seconds Ending Merlin’s 20-year record) (Fixed Ballast Course Record) 2nd Fleet Overall Corrected – R. Disney

1995 – RP66 EXILE – 1st Place Class Winner – J. Warwick Miller

1989 – RP70 TAXI DANCER – 1st Place Class Winner (19 Sleds competing), 2nd Place Fleet Overall – M. Rousse
