"Memberships Available" is an absolute understatement. Ask for the FACTS about the Club's Membership and Finances. These facts probably will not be volunteered- The number of Members just can't support operations, so they keep "trying" to get more Members and raising dues (without Membership approval) and charges (just came out with a new menu-same hamburger goes up 30% in price, and you are required to spend a monthly minimum). Money is sorely needed to carry on the "traditions" of the Club, including Command dinners with officers dressed in Naval uniforms paid for by the Club. Also, lots of flags with stars on them and nautical titles. Idea for fund raising: Sell the "Ranks" and "Stars" to the highest bidders. It's really sad, the Superstorm Sandy Sandy "excuse" only can be used for so long. The lack of insight into the problems is profound. Anyone with the ability/competence to turn things around avoids getting involved in the Club's management because they recognize the Club is "circling the drain." Watch out for Club Propaganda-Even Members don't know what's going on-Everything is a big secret.

This Club Is "Circling the Drain."

This is to counter the Aug 17 nasty uniformed comment. I have been a member for 14 years and enjoyed every minute. I don't have a boat but always find a freind willing to take me out. Lately, I joined the shared boat program. The finances are not secret as monthly meetings are held for all members to investigate and disucss. Close investigation reveals pleasant surprises, not the dire situation mentioned by this sad person. RYC is not as stuffy as some clubs which require jacket and ties at dinner. Members are laid back and friendly. Wednesday night racing is very competitive and a great place to meet people after a exciting couple of hours on the bay. The Change of Command dinner is a very special event honoring those who volunteer their time managing the Club. If you enjoy sailing, I strongly suggest coming down some weekend or calling the office to arrange a tour. KS

Great place to sail and make friends sailing. The food is good with our new Chef. Bar is cheap. Members do support operations fine and have for 150 years. Minutes and finances are available to members only monthly.

This private club is great for sailing, friendships and entertainment. With a new chef, the food is fantastic and the bar is well stocked. They run Wednesday night races with about 30 boats in 3 classes from late May through October and host three regattas and multiple holiday races through the season. The club is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday through most of the winter. Enjoy the great views of the bay from the decks!

Had a great time racing here with my sister and her husband again. We came in third and it was pretty competitive. The food is typical high-end bar food but I had the Wednesday menu which is different then the one on the weekend. Everyone loves to drink here, and the Rebovitch's are always a blast to hang out with. I met some fun people and they are pretty down to earth.

A great place to sail in central NJ. I've been on boats here when I was in high school up till today. My sister and her husband race every Wednesday during the summer and do other races throughout the year. I raced today and had a great time. You go back to the bar and eat and drink with all the other sailors and their friends until late evening after the race. The food isn't that great (burgers and such) but I'm not reviewing it for the food but more for the ambiance and sailing. I'm not sure what all the terminology means and I'm still learning but there are some fun people to hang out with. My sister had her wedding here also last year.

This Place is horrible, this place changes chef way too frequently! To top it off The new chef Jonathan is horrible. I went in one night & he wouldn't even serve me a burger . His excuse was it was dinner time, what kind of Restaurant doesn't serve burgers? A couple weeks ago I went in to have dinner the sizes of those dinners are ridiculous thought it was an appetizer. Don't get me started on the new waitresses, so horrible it's pathetic. WOULDN'T RECOMMEND EATING HERE TO ANYONE!!

Photo of Marie E.

It's okay. Very much a blue-collar feel to the club. Way way too much alcohol. The type and condition of boats they have there is a pretty good signal that most of the members really can't afford sailboats. Mean age of members must be in the upper 60s. The racing scene is all based on handicap racing, which makes for some pretty boring competition. Food and service is dreadful. Kid-friendly, but frankly the main point of bringing your kid there is probably to let them know what they don't want to be when they grow up.

Di Ionno: Raritan Yacht Club sets blue collars out to sea

  • Published: Jul. 13, 2012, 11:45 a.m.
  • Mark Di Ionno | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

PERTH AMBOY — The landmarks and scenery around the Raritan Yacht Club in Perth Amboy tell its story.

At what other yacht club could sailors waiting to be launched out to their crafts see a giant beached tanker being freed by two tugs, less than 200 yards away?

At what other club do the rusted-out behemoth factories of the bay’s industrial past loom in the background?

What other sailors must contend with the tanker traffic and currents of the Arthur Kill? And the broad currents of the Raritan River as they run, interrupted and swirling, though the spillways caused by the abutments of the Jersey Shore line railroad bridge? And the ocean, which swells and pulls the bay at odd intervals daily?

All of this gives the RBYC a unique character. It is a 147-year-old club with a middle-class history that has bred some of the best racing sailors around. This weekend, the club holds its signature event, the Red Grant Regatta, a 66-year-old tradition that is a major event on the New Jersey/New York sailing calendar.

Peter Rebovich of Metuchen is the embodiment of that character. Now 76, with a full gray beard and a cane to help him along, the retired elementary school teacher won his class of the Newport-to-Bermuda yacht race in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2012. In ‘06 and ‘08, he was the overall winner. The reason he never won the race in odd-numbered years is because it isn’t held then.

Rebovich joined the club in 1955, left while his kids were small and didn’t have time to sail, then re-joined in 1973.

"Let’s just say the club offers a very nice peer group," he said. "You meet ‘like’ people."

That is, people who know how to do the work.

The club keeps costs down by having members volunteer for everything from routine maintenance to race committees.

"That’s how it remains affordable," said Howard Paul, a psychologist from North Brunswick and a 22-year member. "It goes back to the blue-collar origins."

The club’s initiation fee is $2,250. That’s not a misprint, nor a misplaced comma. The annual dues are $800, and members must spend $50 a month in the club galley.

"I don’t think there’s a better yacht club deal anywhere," said John Erdreich, a retired professor and acoustics scientist who is the Rear Commodore (or third man in charge) of the club.

They also have a program that allows rising members of their junior program to pay the initiation fee over time.

"This keeps our younger members involved; it’s good for the future of the club," Erdreich said.

But while affordability may be the bones of the 285-member club, racing is the blood.

The race courses take the sailors out into the wind-swept open waters of the Raritan Bay toward Sandy Hook, past the new Victorian peaks of the South Amboy waterfront and the beaches of Laurence Harbor. Far off, the stanchions of the Verrazano rise above the heightened tree-line of Staten Island. The industrial use of the waterway makes for some interesting scenery: along one race course, two tugs, a small ferry and utility boat are lashed together and anchored for storage beyond the mouth of the Arthur Kill.

"We have a very active racing community here," said Dawn Kozak, the Red Grant Regatta race organizer.

There are races every Wednesday, a fall series of races, and "frostbiting" a winter series.

In addition to Rebovich, several club members have won significant cups. The trophy case in the club is a dozen-feet wide, filled with engraved silver. Along the walls are more plaques, with club members names and their winning boats.

The case is dominated by the Red Grant cups. Grant himself was one of those champion yachtsmen, but he left Perth Amboy and the friendly waters of the Raritan Bay for the U.S. Navy in World War II. He never returned. The first race held in his honor was 1947.

True to its middle-class roots, the club has used the three-day regatta to raise money for local charities. This year, as last, it will be the VNA Health Groups, a non-profit organization of visiting nurses, home health aides and hospice workers.

Erdreich said the event is not only the racing, but the social highlight of the year.

"I think the regatta and the events around it (the charity auction tonight, the race dinner tomorrow and awards ceremony Sunday) are very definitely the glue that keeps the club together."
