  • America’s Cup 37 Regatta Starts Today

August 29, 2024 marks the first day of the racing that will eventually, in October, lead to one team, one country winning the 37 th America’s Cup regatta. Since 1851 when the American yacht America won the British Round the Island race, defeating Britain’s best sailors and yacht designers, the trophy, then known as The Hundred Guineas Cup, has been called the America’s Cup. It is the regatta is oldest, longest running sporting event in the world.

Always considered a “development class” regatta in which innovation has been embraced, this year’s event will be sailed in foiling 75-foot boats that hardly look like boats at all. They resemble large water spiders that can skim across the waves at 60 knots. And they have the tendency to occasionally end up in spectacular crashes, kind of like formular One racing.

New Zealand is the defender but the racing that starts today is in the waters off Barcelona, Spain. Britain is the Challenger of Record and hope to reclaim the Hundred Guineas Cup after losing it so long ago. There are four other challengers sailing for the U.S., Italy, France and Switzerland. All of the teams, except for the French, have long America’s Cup pedigrees.

The Challengers’ regatta, in which they vie to become the official challenger for New Zealand is called the Louis Vuitton Cup and runs in a round-robin format until two teams have been eliminated. The semi-finals and finals follow in which one crew and one boat will emerge as the last ones standing.

The racing, although limited to short windward-leeward courses, will fluctuate from thrilling to mind-numbing depending on the wind and the competitiveness of the boats. The finals are almost always very closely fought.

Unfortunately, the only way to watch the racing live on TV in the U.S. will be on the subscription cable channel ESPN+ that has a basic subscription price of $10.99 a month.  The official America’s Cup website will stream videos of the races with a 24-hour delay. Check out the America’s Cup website here.

Everything you need to know about the 37th America’s Cup

Follow the build-up to the 37th America’s Cup as the teams prepare to fight it out for the oldest sporting trophy in the world.

Which teams are in the 37th America’s Cup?

In 2021 four teams raced in fully foiling AC75 monohulls which were conceived specifically for the event by then Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand and Challenger of Record, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

These same four teams return for the 2024 America’s Cup and will be joined by two additional teams, bringing the total number of entries up to 6.

Emirates Team New Zealand – America’s Cup Defender

As the current holder of the America’s Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand will be racing again in the 37th America’s Cup. As the Defender, the Kiwis will be guaranteed a spot in the America’s Cup regatta itself.

Any other challengers will need to race each other in preliminary regattas for the right to be the single challenger in the America’s Cup regatta itself.

INEOS Britannia – America’s Cup Challenger of Record

The Challenger of Record is the name given to the first yacht club to challenge the holder of the America’s Cup once it has been won.

When Emirates Team New Zealand successfully completed their defence of the America’s Cup in 2021, the Royal Yacht Squadron immediately issued a challenge on behalf of Ben Ainslie’s INEOS Team UK (now called INEOS Britannia), so they are Challenger of Record for the 37th America’s Cup .

INEOS Britannia and Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team has strengthened an exhausting relationship, with the British challenger standing to benefit from the technical and engineering experience of the multiple World Champion F1 team.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli has a very long America’s Cup history having first competed in 2000 and has taken part in every Cup since (with the exception of the unique 2010 Deed of Gift match).

For the 36th America’s Cup Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli were the challenger of record. They also won the challenger selection series so it was this Italian team who took on Emirates Team New Zealand for the America’s Cup itself.

The team will return for the 37th America’s Cup though this time they are not the official challenger of record.

American Magic

In 2021 the New York Yacht Clubs’ American Magic was also competing, though their event was ultimately ruined by a capsize in the early part of the regatta . They did get the boat rebuilt but it never got back up to speed and they made an early exit.

The 2021 campaign marked the return of the New York Yacht Club to the America’s Cup. The NYYC held the America’s Cup from its inception in 1851 right the way through to 1983, when they were defeated by the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Australia II .

American Magic have confirmed their entry into the 37th America’s Cup and will, once again, be representing the New York Yacht Club.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing

Another team making a return to the America’s Cup scene after a long break will be Ernesto Bertarelli’s Alinghi team. The Swiss team won the America’s Cup in 2003 and then completed a successful defence in 2007.

However, a serious falling out over the potential rules for the next America’s Cup saw Alinghi taken to court by Larry Ellison and his BMW Oracle team, the 2010 America’s Cup was held between Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing in a Deed of Gift match that saw the teams fight it out in huge multihulls.

BMW Oracle won the contest and Alinghi stepped away from America’s Cup racing. Their return is a welcome one and their Cup history alongside their partnership with Red Bull Racing should see them a solid challenge from the off.

Orient Express Racing Team

The French entry to the 2024 America’s Cup was long rumoured but it was not until quite late in the day that they officially announced their intention to challenge.

It was in early 2023 that the official announcement came of a French AC entry, backed by Accor Group and its brands Orient Express and ALL-ACCOR Live Limitless.

As a fairly late challenge they will have a lot to do to be competitive, but they struck a great – and controversial – deal with Team New Zealand to buy their boat design, so should at least have a quick hull underneath them.

What boats are in the 37th America’s Cup

The Protocol for the 37th America’s Cup has been released including the rules for the class of boat to be used in the next edition of the event. Once again the America’s Cup will be raced for in AC75s . These boats were first brought in ahead of the 36th America’s Cup so this will be their second outing.

The foiling monohulls are slightly different, with rules being tweaked partly aimed at improving light wind performance and reducing crew numbers from 11 to 8.

Teams are only be allowed to build one AC75 and nationality rules are strict this time around requiring 100% of the race crew for each competitor to either be a passport holder of the country of the team’s yacht club or to have been physically present in that country for 18 months of the previous three years prior to 17th March 2021.

Emirates Team New Zealand saw success in 2017 in Bermuda with their Cyclors . Having been banned in 2021, these have made a return for the 37th America’s Cup.

Barcelona, the venue for the 37th America’s Cup

Where will the 37th America’s Cup be held?

Barcelona, Spain was selected in 2022 as the venue for the 37th America’s Cup , marking the first time a New Zealand team has chosen to defend a Cup win overseas.

The home city of Emirates Team New Zealand and the venue for the 36th America’s Cup, Auckland, had an exclusive period in which to tender for the regatta immediately after the Kiwis’ successful defence in 2021, but the sums on offer were not enough, and Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton cast the net wider internationally after rejecting a NZ$99 million (£50 million) offer from the New Zealand government.

A number venues were mooted including: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Cork, Ireland; Malaga, Spain, but Barcelona eventually won out.

When is the 37th America’s Cup?

The America’s Cup will be held in 2024 in Barcelona. Racing in the 37th America’s Cup Match itself, which is a best of 13 (first to seven) format will start on Saturday 12th October 2024 and could run all the way to the 27th October should all the races be needed to pick a winner.

The America’s Cup will be proceeded by the challenger selection series, which will see which of the five challengers gets the honour to race New Zealand for the Cup itself.

Racing for the Challenger Selection Series – officially the Louis Vuitton Cup, will take place between the 29 August 2024 and 7 October 2024.

Match Racing

Though the America’s Cup was first raced for in 1851 ( and won by the schooner America from which the trophy gets its name), this race was between a fleet of boats. A challenge by the British in the 1870s was also conducted as a fleet race.

By the 1880s, following a protest from the British, the America’s Cup was decided in a head-to-head match race where two boats sail against each other.

Match racing is a particular skill and encourages aggressive manoeuvres using the rules to put your opponent at a disadvantage. This cut-and-thrust racing, where the only objective is to beat your opponent, has long been at the heart of America’s Cup racing and produces a thrilling spectacle.

America’s Cup in Barcelona starts ’round robin’ stage – full guide (Part 2)

Following the ‘warm-up’ Preliminary Regatta that took place last week, the 37th America’s Cup officially kicked off its ‘Round Robin’ stage of the ‘Louis Vuitton Cup’ in Barcelona on Thursday, and which will run until 8 September . It will be followed by the semi-finals ( 14-19 September ) and then the final ( 26 Sept – 5 Oct ) before the winner of the LV Cup will take on the the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand , in the grand final match of the America’s Cup from 12-21 October .

The LV Cup consists of two Round Robin stages, with the first elimination after the second Round Robin, to decide the four semi-finalists.

The winning boat from the Round Robin stage gets to select the opponent they wish to race and at the conclusion of the semi-finals, two challengers will meet in the final. The winner gets not only a magnificent trophy but also the right to challenge Emirates Team New Zealand in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup.

Emirates New Zealand boat damaged

Emirates Team New Zealand says it has had to remove a piece of the hull of its boat that was damaged in a crane incident after the opening race of its America’s Cup title defence .

The mishap happened late on Thursday when the 75-foot Taihoro yacht was being removed from the water after racing.

Team leader Grant Dalton said the multimillion-dollar boat fell some six metres onto the support cradle on their team base inside Barcelona’s old port. Dalton said the impact sounded ‘like a bomb went off’. He and skipper Peter Burling inspected the boat after a crew had lifted the tips of its critically important hydrofoils off the concrete ground.

‘There is some structural damage, but the main force was taken on the forward cradle splash,’ Dalton said in a statement released on Friday. ‘Overnight this area has been removed (in other words we have cut the piece out of the hull bottom) and the repair has started which means building a new piece of boat. It is too early at this stage to say when we will be sailing again but I have seen these guys work miracles before.’

Dalton said on Thursday that the repair job could keep his team sidelined throughout the double round-robin phase that lasts through next week. That would be a setback, but it would be manageable if the boat can be refitted in the coming days or even weeks since as defending champions the Kiwis are guaranteed a spot in the finals held in October.

The incident meant that New Zealand didn’t participate in the two races it was scheduled for Friday. That won’t impact the standings since its races don’t count; they are essentially only for practice to keep the team sharp for the final.

One of the five challengers (see ‘Who is racing?’ below) will be eliminated after the opening phase before the final four enter a two-round playoff series.

Who is racing?

The holders of the America’s Cup are Emirates Team New Zealand , but some strong competition is coming for them, with INEOS Britannia , from the UK as the ‘Challenger of Record’. The unique format of the Cup affords the Defender, as the holder of the America’s Cup, the automatic right to bypass selection and proceed directly to the final ‘Match’ whereas the Challengers will undertake an intense multi-race series of round-robins to find the top yacht to take on the New Zealand team.

The entries are: INEOS Britannia (UK), Alinghi  Red Bull Racing (Switzerland), Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli (Italy),  NYYC American Magic (USA) and Orient Express Racing Team (France).

Every team for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup is unique. The design of their boats and the technology they employ will be bespoke and highly refined, the result of tens of thousands of hours of computer and on-water testing.

The core make-up of teams in the America’s Cup can number up to 120 each with extended research and development teams taking that number, in some cases, above 200 – and there are a wide variety of skills employed.

Each team has a maximum numbers of eight sailors on board the AC75 – with a number of reserves on stand-by on any given race day. Four of the crew on the new AC75s are ‘Cyclors’ powering the sail control, mast and hydraulic functions of the yacht.

All of the sailors competing at the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup are professional, and most are multiple World Champions and Olympic medallists (even amongst the Cyclors) and some are winners of previous editions of the America’s Cup.

Key Race Dates in Barcelona

The key race dates still to come are as follows:

Luna Rossa racing Team Emirates New Zealand.

But this four-day round-robin, only good for bragging rights, is just the start of the three-month series of yacht-racing. The Louis Vuitton Cup starts Thursday and runs through October 5, when the overall winner faces New Zealand in the 10-day America’s Cup Match, ending on October 21.

If it sounds like a long season, it is. But the America’s Cup has slowly evolved from an often boring, elitist “sport” held offshore in very slow boats, into something of a tech spectacle with fast, foiling, 75-foot monohulls, called AC75s, that all have the same specs, with some modifications allowed. But not much. The idea is to make the event a more level playing field, technically and financially. Previous America’s Cups have favored the wealthiest teams that could afford technical modifications often executed in days to give an edge over competitors.

“New Zealand and Italy look really strong this year, with both strong boats and teams,” Dave Reed, editor-in-chief of Sailing World, tells Robb Report. “But the American team is also a contender. They have a really fast boat and some of the best sailors in the event.”

The US team, American Magic, and Emirates Team New Zealand.

The teams are now projecting competitive scrappiness rather than erudite sophistication, with a racecourse that encourages close encounters at speeds reaching 58 mph. But the dangers are mitigated this year, since there’s an electronic boundary around each boat that dishes out penalties to competitors that wander into their opponents’ territories.

Last week’s series, which pitted one team against another in head-to-head match races, showed flashes of brilliance and many self-inflicted errors, but also how fast and nimble the AC75s are.

The New York Yacht Club’s American Magic team, which took third place overall because of a broken rudder early in the series, beat the New Zealand Defenders soundly on the last day of racing, showing the world it was a serious contender. American Magic’s AC75, called Patriot, outdistanced the Kiwis by more than nearly 700 yards on the final stretch.  “It’s hard not to be happy, but we still got third in the series,” says Terry Hutchinson, skipper and president of American Magic. “You may win a couple of battles but don’t win the war, so you’ve got to keep the bigger picture in mind. That’s what we will do.”

UK Team Ennoy

The pundits seem to be favoring Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and American Magic as the top contenders of the Defenders, with the Swiss Alinghi Red Bull Racing, with its team of young sailors, the U.K. team INEOS and France’s Orient Express Racing, on the second tier. The Kiwis are generally seen as the Cup favorites, helped by the fact that they won’t be racing any other teams until they meet the Louis Vuitton Cup winner in the America’s Cup finals.

But the dynamics could change over the next few months as the teams become more familiar with their boats and racing conditions in the Med. Beyond a team’s racing prowess, a mechanical failure could end the hopes of any team at a critical juncture. That happened to American Magic in the 2021 Louis Vuitton series.

Team New Zealand wins the initial round robin series.

Last week’s round-robins gave a glimpse of how the next races could unfold as the five Challenger teams compete against each other. For the most part, the boats performed well through the four days, with the final day being particularly challenging, with unstable winds and a confused sea state. Most were worried about boats breaking, something that could’ve been disastrous just days away from the Louis Vuitton Cup. But the teams soldiered on with only minor technical problems, looking forward to what should be a great three months of racing.

EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND WIN THE LOUIS VUITTON PRELIMINARY REGATTA

Emirates Team New Zealand came away as winners of the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta after a day that was always going to be a tricky. A Mistral wind emerged out of the north of the Mediterranean and pushed down the coast, causing a build in the sea state of up to 1.1m and breeze out of the east at 10-13 knots.

Emirates Team New Zealand had already qualified for the final, but their first race was against American Magic who were back from their rudder damaged sustained during racing yesterday. A match up that has been highly anticipated.

In the end, like so many races we have seen in the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta, the race was decided at the start and by the first cross, unfortunately for Emirates Team New Zealand after starting to windward of American Magic and tacking off to the right-hand side of the course, the American’s hooked into a nice left-hand shift and the Kiwis struggled to make inroads from there, as helmsman Nathan Outteridge explained: “American Magic sailed really well, they had a good start and we were pretty keen to get out to the right side of the course but unfortunately they got a nice left shift off the line so it's pretty hard to catch up to them after that. They seemed to be nicely in phase with the wind and we missed a couple of shifts, so that's racing.”

But the match of the day was always going to focus on the final top two qualifiers race for the regatta, a familiar rematch between Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli who finished the round robin equal on 4 points each.

AMERICA’S CUP RACE REPORT-  LOUIS VUITTON PRELIMINARY REGATTA FINAL:

Emirates Team New Zealand (Port Entry) vs. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli

The match of the regatta. The final. The big one. Both teams come into this with a lot to prove and it’s Nathan Outteridge steering ‘Taihoro’ from the port pod who dials into the starting box just a couple of seconds late and make an easy cross of Jimmy Spithill who comes in 4 seconds late. The Kiwis head out to the right of the box and the Italians sail low and trail them out. Kiwis are first to gybe back, and the Italians ignore and continue going deep in the box, but a penalty is called on the Italians for a close encounter on the way back.

The Italians look rattled and, on the lead back, try a time-on-distance to the starboard end of the line. The Kiwis appear to like the port end of the line and hit the line bang on time before both boats tack to port and head towards the right boundary. After the Italians manage to wash off their penalty Emirates Team New Zealand immediately slap on a tight cover with an early lead of some 100 metres which extends swiftly to 200 metres as the wind-shadow effect take hold. Both teams battling to stay on the foils with deep exits out of the tacks.

america's cup superyacht regatta 2024

At the first windward mark it’s a 22 second lead to Emirates Team New Zealand who look vastly different in performance terms to their earlier race against NYYC American Magic. Down the first run, the Kiwis keep a good gybe cover but are showing some deep VMG angles with a lead now out, in distance terms, to almost 400 metres. A neat layline call out to the left (looking downwind) brings ‘Taihoro’ into the starboard marker at the first leeward gate whilst Luna Rossa is forced to do one more gybe to get to the port marker but the delta is down to just 16 seconds. Split tactics sees the Italians head right upwind whilst the Kiwis go to the left boundary before tacking back. The conditions are super-tough with a big swell and a very patchy breeze but Emirates Team New Zealand makes the cross back and puts the cover immediately on to which the Italians respond by tacking off to the right again.

The Kiwis are sailing well with a modicum of windward cant and all the way up the second beat are keeping very close with the Italians, tacking on their wind at every opportunity. Luna Rossa are struggling to make incremental gains but in the final quarter of the leg it’s nevertheless desperately close when Emirates Team New Zealand set up to take the starboard marker with a leading delta of 19 seconds as both boats head to the left initially.

A poor gybe by the Kiwis brings the race closer with the on-water distance at just 165 metres but they slap the gybe cover on relentlessly with both boats very evenly matched. In the final quarter of the leg, Emirates Team New Zealand sets up on the starboard layline to round the port marker ahead, just, by six seconds. Luna Rossa go for an immediate JK rounding to split tactics whilst Emirates Team New Zealand sails to the right boundary. As the boats come back, it’s Emirates Team New Zealand with the starboard advantage but they elect to tack right under the bow of Luna Rossa and bounce them off to the left side. Impressive move and very much something of a signature of the Kiwis.

america's cup superyacht regatta 2024

On the next comeback it’s still nerve-wrackingly close and the Italians get a 75 metre penalty as they ducked in from behind and broke the virtual boat boundary. A further penalty on the Italians was incurred on the very next tack with the Kiwis luffing from leeward and the Italians failing to keep clear. Nip and tuck now but it’s the Kiwis who round the final windward mark with an 11 second lead. Amazing racing.

With just over a mile to run and both boats trundling down the course at 38 knots, it’s Emirates Team New Zealand with all the aces and keeping a very close gybe cover as the lead hovers around 250 metres. Emirates Team New Zealand spot pressure out to the right of the course and head to the boundary whilst also minimising the manoeuvres. It’s a brilliant call from the Kiwis and they bring ‘Taihoro’ home to win the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta with a winning delta of 34 seconds that belies just how close this racing was. Two top teams, really performing at the very top of their games. A pleasure to watch.

america's cup superyacht regatta 2024

While the team were happy to take the win, there is still a long way to go in the Louis Vuitton 37 th  America’s Cup as Skipper Peter Burling summarised the day:

“It definitely wasn't our prettiest work, we made it pretty hard for ourselves but absolutely stoked to walk away with that one because if you can make that many mistakes and still win a yacht race. It's been a bit of a tough day for us to be honest with that first race against American Magic but really happy to take the win.

Portside helmsman Nathan Outteridge agreed: “We made that one a lot harder for ourselves than we should have with a few unforced errors. But it was awesome to see such a tight tactical race.

We sort of tacked in the wrong spot and fell foul for almost a penalty there, but it was good action a good battle and obviously lots for us to review. So worthwhile day and we will take the win.”

America's Cup sets sail in Barcelona with New Zealand defending: Here's a preview

Ineos and red bull racing take to the water.

america's cup superyacht regatta 2024

BARCELONA, Spain — The world's oldest international sports trophy, best yachtsmen and cutting-edge design and technology have come together in Barcelona for the 37th edition of sailing's America’s Cup.

Five boats – from Italy , the United States, Britain, Switzerland and France – will spend the coming weeks racing in the Mediterranean waves to decide which will earn the honor of trying to dethrone the almighty Emirates Team New Zealand for the Auld Mug. After Thursday's opening races, the British team from Ineos leads the standings .

As the two-time defender, the Kiwis chose Barcelona’s choppy waters as the venue and helped establish the rules and boat design for this edition. They also get a guaranteed spot in the final to be held in October.

The results of three years of work and massive investment will now be put to the test.

“It is starting to get serious in a hurry. We are now racing for keeps,” Ben Ainslie, skipper of British team INEOS Britannia, said Wednesday.

Here is what else you need to know about the equivalent of the World Cup of sailing.

Sci-fi boats

For anyone who has not followed the foiling revolution in sailing over the past decade, America's Cup yachts look more like something designed to fly through outer space in a sci-fi film than a traditional sailboat.

The only parts more or less recognizable are the rudder, mast, mainsail and jib on the foiling 75-foot monohull that the champions chose as the boat type for these regattas. This AC75 is an evolution of the 2021 monohulls, which were a radical leap from the catamarans that the same New Zealand team sailed to victory in 2017.

If you are looking for a skipper standing tall at the helm while sailors scamper around the deck, then forget it. The helmeted crew members are tucked into cockpits, keeping them out of the wind and favoring the boats' aerodynamics.

But the most remarkable feature of these boats are the two hydrofoils, attached to winglike appendages port and starboard, that make these boats look like giant water strider insects. The foils enable these wonders of nautical engineering to spend more time with the bottom of their hulls above the water than submerged while racing. Their “T” shape resembles the inverted tail of an orca whale, and their 4.5-meter span sustains the more than six-ton boat as it rockets over the water at 50 knots per hour (92 kph/57.5 mph).

All the teams have two helmsmen for this race – copying a move made by the Italian Luna Rossa team three years ago. The two helmsmen take turns steering and watching the other's blind spot since each one has half his visibility cut off by the sails. There are also two trimmers.

Gone this time are the grinders. Instead, each boat has four cyclists, called “cyclors” — many of whom are world-class rowers — who pedal away to power the hydraulic mechanisms needed to trim the sails and rotate the mast.

The defenders

Emirates Team New Zealand won the America’s Cup in 1995 and 2000 before winning the last two editions.

They are without a doubt the team to beat.

The team led by Grant Dalton has earned the respect of their rivals for their daring boat designs and flawless execution. They will participate in the opening round, but their points won’t count. They will then sit out the next two rounds while the remaining teams duke it out to see which will meet them in the final.

Peter Burling is back at the helm after helping the team win in 2017 and 2021. He is joined by fellow Olympic medalist Nathan Outteridge in steering their super-sleek Taihoro yacht.

“The challenger group is the strongest it has been in a long time at the America’s Cup,” Burling said. “It is going to be super exciting to see what happens over the next weeks.”

The challengers

— Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team reached the last final in 2021 — and lost 7-3. The team representing the Sicily Yacht Club is steered by helmsmen Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni.

— INEOS Britannia is hoping to end Britain’s painfully long search for a title. No team has challenged as many times as the British, a losing streak which started back in 1851 when they were bettered by the schooner America in a race around the Isle of Wight. INEOS is led by helmsman and Olympic great Ainslie and is supported by the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

— NYYC American Magic is back after its 2021 campaign ended shortly after its Patriot boat capsized and almost sank. The New York Yacht Club draws on the history of having won the first edition and then successfully defending the title 24 times until that incredible 132-year run ended in 1983. It's helmed by Tom Slingsby, the sailor of the year, an Australian who has an American passport thanks to his American mother, and Englishman Paul Goodison, a fellow Olympic gold medalist.

— Alinghi Red Bull Racing is backed by the sports drink giant and its F1 team. The Swiss outfit is seeking a title after the landlocked nation won the cup in 2003 and 2007. It has been training in Barcelona the longest after setting up base here two years ago.

— Orient Express Racing Team comes with a boat based on a design it purchased from the New Zealand team. The last team to arrive in Barcelona, the French face the extra challenge of having less on-site practice time.

A round-robin stage will eliminate the weakest challenger by Sept. 8. The remaining four will have two playoff series to decide which boat will take on New Zealand in a best-of-13 series starting on Oct. 12.

This year’s event also includes a new Women’s America’s Cup and a youth competition.

The racing will take place in the same stretch of water used for the sailing events at the 1992 Olympics.

Boats zigzag back and forth across a rectangular race course located in waters just off the Barcelona beachfront, within view of fans on the shore. Boats have to pass through a pair of buoys – called a gate – and perform hairpin turns by shifting from one foil to the other.

Several teams have said that Barcelona’s waters can produce trickier race conditions than, for example, Auckland, since there is no natural bay to stop the wave action that comes from far offshore and often goes in a direction off-angle from the wind.

Race starts are crucial as boats maneuver to be in a leading position when they hit the starting line.

In choosing Spain, New Zealand broke with its tradition of picking Auckland as this edition’s venue because of the need to ensure a big payday. And what better place to ensure people would flock to see the event than one of Europe’s major Mediterranean destinations?

The last regatta in New Zealand was held when the world was still in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. That meant there were scant crowds and little of the glamor – think superyachts and wealthy sailing amateurs — who are expected to be back en masse at Barcelona. Fashion and luxury goods designer Louis Vuitton has returned as the official sponsor of the race, and the trophy is secured in a custom Louis Vuitton case when it travels.

Barcelona calculates the event will attract some 2.5 million tourists and leave over a billion euros in the city. It is being held during an upsurge in citizen complaints against what they consider “overtourism” and skyrocketing rents .

New Zealand's boat damaged after crane mishap on opening day of America's Cup title defense

Emirates Team New Zealand had a misstep on the opening day of its America’s Cup defense when a crane that was lifting its AC75 “Taihoro” onto its cradle failed and the boat was damaged

BARCELONA, Spain — Emirates Team New Zealand got off to a bungled start of its America’s Cup trophy defense Thursday when its yacht was damaged after a mishap with the crane removing it from the water after the sailing event’s opening races.

The 75-foot “Taihoro” monohull won’t be fit to sail on Friday and maybe for several days to come, the team said, after it took a hard hit when it fell some six meters (20 feet) and “landed heavily” on its cradle supports at the team’s base in Barcelona’s old port. New Zealand said that no crew members were hurt but that it would need to assess the damage.

“It’s certainly going to put us out for quite a while,” team CEO Grant Dalton said. “I was in my office and heard it. It sounded like a bomb went off. It will probably put us out for the round robins. Maybe we get back before the end of them, maybe not. Until we assess it properly we just don’t know.”

Fortunately for the Kiwis, their races in the opening round-robin phase over the next two weeks don’t count. Dalton’s team will then have a bye over the the following two rounds. The real racing for New Zealand begins in six weeks, when they will face the best of five challengers who survive the knockout rounds.

Dalton and skipper Peter Burling, along with other team members, inspected the ship after it was raised up by a crane and gently secured in the cradle’s frame. They gave a specially long look at the starboard hydrofoil that was resting on the concrete ground until the ship was put in the correct position. The worst case scenario would be if its hull were cracked.

The incident overshadowed New Zealand’s win, which didn’t count for points anyway, over Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli earlier in their opening race.

Slow start for Magic

A pre-start mistake most likely cost American Magic a point in its first race, against INEOS Britannia.

American Magic, the boat representing the New York Yacht Club, fell off its foils when it slowed down too much in low-wind conditions before the race start. By the time the AC75 Patriot got back up to speed, the British had already crossed the start line and built a 700-meter lead.

The Brits earned the winning point, but skipper Ben Ainslie was downbeat after seeing the Americans eat up a large part of the huge lead they gifted his boat. American Magic finished only 12 second behind INEOS.

“It was a great race in the end, because American Magic had a problem at the start, but they did a nice job getting back into the race and keeping it close and getting some good gains back,” INEOS skipper Ben Ainslie told The Associated Press. “So for us it was mixed emotions really, very pleased to get a point on the board but also, our performance in straight line and maneuvering, we need to work on that.”

The Americans were left ruing what might have been.

“We need to be better at the starting and how we approach (it),” said American Magic helmsman Paul Goodison told the AP. “But we there’s plenty of good takeaways. We can we can learn that.”

French team Orient Racing Express beat Switzerland’s Alinghi Red Bull Racing after passing them halfway through the six-leg race.

The Italians bounced back from their meaingless loss to New Zealand by beating Orient Express by nearly 1 1/2 minutes.

The opening double round robin phase of the America’s Cup will eliminate the weakest of the five challengers by Sept. 8.

New Zealand is aiming for a third straight cup win after being victorious in 2017 in Bermuda and 2021 in Auckland. The Kiwis brought the 37th America's Cup to Barcelona saying it was necessary to guarantee the financial security of the team and a competition that would attract enough sponsors. Fashion and luxury goods designer Louis Vuitton has returned as the official sponsor of the race, and the trophy is secured in a custom Louis Vuitton case when it travels.

The America’s Cup is the world oldest international sports trophy. Only four countries — the U.S., New Zealand, Australia and Switzerland — have ever won it.

Spain’s King Felipe VI, who sailed in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, was in attendance on Day 1.

Sir Ben Ainslie INEOS Britannia

Countdown to a showdown: Sir Ben Ainslie on why this America’s Cup will be the most competitive yet

As we enter the main competition, Sir Ben Ainslie examines the experience, resources and characters that may give each America’s Cup team a crucial edge.

How time has flown since the last Cup in Auckland in 2021. At INEOS Britannia we knew we had to keep going in our quest to bring the Auld Mug home, and I can break that decision down to four factors: securing Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’s support; restructuring the team and personnel; creating a technical partnership with Mercedes GP; and learning from the Kiwis.

The team has worked incredibly hard and we believe we have a yacht with the potential to be a race winner. But it’s on us to maximise performance from the yacht and the sailors operating it over these final few weeks as we build up to the competition.

Observing our own preparations and those of our competitors, I expect AC37 to be one of, if not the most, competitive Cup in recent times. The level of the teams in terms of their history, personnel and funding is exceptional. There are no lame ducks. Whoever ultimately wins in Barcelona this October will have truly earned their success.

The Kiwis are the firm favourites. As Defenders they’re already in the finals and are going for an unprecedented three in a row. Of course they are: they have outstanding talent in management, design and sailing and the confidence of knowing they can win.

Almost 30 years in the game means Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli has the experience and talent to go all the way. Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni bring huge experience to a young and highly talented sailing squad. As you would expect given the team’s heritage, the boat is stunning – if it’s as fast as it looks the rest of us are in for a drubbing.

American Magic has operated a slick campaign, completing an impressive testing programme with both their legacy AC75 and AC40. Sailing operations are led by the highly experienced  Terry Hutchinson with the on-water team led by Tom Slingsby and Paul Goodison.

Alinghi Red Bull racing have won the Cup twice, in 2003 and 2007, albeit with a different generation of design and sailing teams. That said, they have strong leadership from Ernesto Bertarelli and Brad Butterworth, who skippered in 2007.

Finally, we have the French – a young and relatively inexperienced team but with the ace card of a Kiwi design package and strong leadership from experienced manager Bruno Dubois and sailing team lead Quentin Delapierre, who has impressed on the Sail GP circuit.

The preliminary regatta on the Barcelona race course will be the first time the teams officially line up without the uncertainties of being in “testing trim” and will be a true marker of each team’s relative performance. After the preliminary regatta it’s the Louis Vuitton Cup, the official Challenger series.

First is a double round robin, where each team races each other twice. The Kiwis will also race in this round only but their points will not count to the Challenger series. One team will be eliminated and the final four will go on to a semi final and final, to decide the Louis Vuitton Cup winner and the team that will meet the Kiwis in the America’s Cup final.

Once competition begins there is little or no time to make serious modifications to the yachts, so if any team is struggling to perform in the preliminary event, it’s likely that their prospects will be limited.

That said, history tells us the yacht that wins in October may not necessarily have been the fastest in August. There are still plenty of tweaks that can be made and Mother Nature will also have her say in how things play out. One thing is for certain: the Cup this summer in Barcelona is set to be one of the most exciting ever.

America’s Cup : Erst der Franzosen-Coup, dann Kran-Schock und vorläufiges Aus für die Kiwis

Tatjana Pokorny

 ·  30.08.2024

August 29, 2024. Louis Vuitton Cup, Race Day 1. LUNA ROSSA PRADA PIRELLI TEAM, ORIENT EXPRESS RACING TEAM

Frankreichs “Orient Express” besiegt “BoatOne”

27 Aug Rolex Swan Cup is always more than just a regatta

america's cup superyacht regatta 2024

All sports have events in their calendars that transcend the sport itself, that embrace a sense of community which links participants in a shared experience, along with those who witness and support it.

Yacht racing of course has its contenders for this transcendental crown, and the Rolex Swan Cup has been successfully stating its own claim for the honour every two years since 1980 — and will do so again at its 22nd edition from September 15-21 in Porto Cervo with more than 100 examples of the Nautor Swan range already entered.

The regatta will also mark a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the partnership between Rolex, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) and Nautor Swan. To commemorate these first 40 years together a photographic exhibition will be held in Piazza Azzurra tracing the values which underpin this iconic regatta and have united Rolex, YCCS and Nautor Swan for four decades. It will be a journey of emotions and memories, celebrating the past with a clear view to the future.

“Our partnership with Rolex and the YCCS has been a long and successful celebration of shared values and constant innovation that has established a landmark in the world of sailing and sport,” said Nautor Group President Leonardo Ferragamo . “It has been and is an example of gentlemanly yet real competition, elegance and friendship. I am happy to welcome so many passionate sailors to this exciting new edition!”

A gathering of friends

Sardinia’s friendly and exclusive Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has long been described as the Swan fleet’s spiritual home, and it fully deserves the title with its seemingly effortless delivery of elegance, sophistication and efficiency — rather like a Swan yacht it might be said.

Combine this with the magnificent sailing area around Sardinia’s spectacular and scenic northern coasts, and it is easy to appreciate the firm foundations supporting this long-standing collaboration.

Within such a secure setting the camaraderie between Swan owners and sailors has blossomed, with the spirit imbued in the iconic brand extending out into friendly competition on the water, and then refreshed ashore as old and new friends share and celebrate the Swan experience.

The 2024 edition will once again welcome members of the Swan family from all over the planet, with models from the extensive range spanning from the smallest — and most recent addition — the ClubSwan 28 to one of the Maxis, the 27.7m Swan 90 Freya .

Her owner Donald Macpherson celebrated winning the Maxi class in 2022 with words that went directly to the heart of the event: “It was an incredible week, and all the boats and competitors were really fantastic. Success in sailing, the Rolex Swan Cup, Porto Cervo, the YCCS, there is nothing better.”

It is a view fully shared at the lower end of the LOA range. Giulio Gatti , the owner of Anya Race one of the new CS28s, as well as a Swan 48 Anya , said: “Being part of the Swan racing world has been a marvellous experience, and the Rolex Swan Cup is a jewel in the crown for the whole Swan world, which is a club and a family. As one of the first owners of the new ClubSwan 28s I cannot wait until we take to the water in Sardinia again.”

Out on the racecourse

With the emphasis firmly set on friendly and fair racing, the Rolex Swan Cup has introduced a few imaginative changes in 2024 to enhance the experience.

Overall the fleet is divided into two groups with Group 1 hosting the Rating classes, split into three divisions: Maxi, Swan and Sparkman & Stephens, each further divided into classes. In one of the new changes, the fleet will not only be divided by size, as in the past, but also depending on how racing orientated each entry is. The idea here is to maximise the fun for all, aiming to avoid having a full-on racing machine amid a class of Corinthian if competitive entries, and vice versa.

Meanwhile Group 2 will feature the more racing focused Swan One Design models with classes including the ClubSwan 50, ClubSwan 36 and ClubSwan 28. In addition the Swan One Design Grand Prix class has been created to cater for other Swan OD classes like the Swan 45 and ClubSwan 42.

The final innovation to this year’s event is that racing will now take place over five consecutive days — 17 to 21 September — with no lay-day, so finishing on a Saturday giving owners and crews a more convenient journey home.

This change is of particular benefit to those travelling long distances to attend, none more so than Mr Watanabe, who will be racing onboard Swan 68 Defiance : “My relationship with Mr. Ferragamo started when my company Riviera became the exclusive dealer in Japan of the Swan brand.

“I am looking forward to meeting and communicating with many people who share the Swan spirit and values, not only through the racing, but also through attending owner’s meetings and Rolex parties in Porto Cervo.

“I want to absorb the passion and spirit of yachting that I see, hear, and feel at the venue, as well as observe and learn about the operation of the event, and use this knowledge for the first Swan race event in Asia, which we will hold in Japan in the near future.”

The Rating entries in Group 1 will be able to enjoy the spectacular Costa Smeralda coastline on daily coastal races, while the One-Design family will take on a mix of windward-leeward races and two coastal race days.

It is a combination that has delighted a new member of the ClubSwan 36 fleet, Ghada G. Barsoum, who has chartered Lady Ghada for the season: “I am in love with  Lady Ghada . I am incredibly proud to represent my country, Egypt, and to be a woman at the helm. This drives me to push my limits and take on new challenges with a fantastic crew. A few months ago, I could never have imagined myself steering such a fast and performing boat, and now, thanks to ClubSwan Racing, I can enjoy the excitement of surfing and skimming the waves.”

And back on shore

The social side ashore has always been an integral part of the Swan experience, and the Rolex Swan Cup takes it to an exceptional level — aided by the sophisticated surroundings of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

Adjoining The YCCS Clubhouse, the Piazza Azzurra square is at the heart of events, most particularly for the after-race refreshments where tales can be told and congratulations — or sympathies— offered in an always convivial atmosphere.

The YCCS Clubhouse itself will provide the inspiring setting for both the Welcome Cocktail on the Monday and Owners’ Dinner on the Thursday, with the YCCS Regatta Village hosting the celebratory Final Prize Giving. Friday’s Rolex Dinner Party will undoubtedly be a highlight of the week at a venue yet to be revealed.

America's Cup 2021

The 36th edition of the America's Cup - also known as AC36 - will take place at Auckland , Waitemata Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf in New Zealand commencing on the 6th of March 2021 and concluding on the 21st of March 2021.

Five courses have been selected that span from the north Auckland suburb of Takapuna to Waiheke Island. According to Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton, the courses were chosen to cater for all wind and tide directions and conditions while ensuring that land-based spectators and the large spectator fleet that is expected have excellent views of proceedings.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Circolo della Vela Sicilia, who are represented by the Emirates Team New Zealand and the Challenger of Record - Luna Rossa respectively, have collaborated on the building rules for the AC75 to ensure there is plenty of room for creativity and innovation while maintaining fair competition between vessels. The rules include:

• Strict limitations on the number of components that can be built including hulls, masts, rudders, foils, and sails, thus encouraging teams to do more R&D in simulation and subsequently less physical construction and testing

• Supplied foil arms and cant system to save design time and construction costs

• Supplied rigging

• One design mast tube

While the previous two editions used catamarans, the 36th edition of the America’s Cup will be contested in the AC75 mono-hulled foiling yacht, which has a hull length of 20.7m/67.9ft with a bowsprit of 2m/6.5ft, and a maximum beam of 5m/16.4ft. The total weight will not exceed 6.5T, while a crew of 11 has an expected weight range of 960-990kg.

The twin canting T-foils have a maximum span of 4m/13ft and a depth of 5m/16.4ft, while the centreline T-foil rudder has a maximum 3m/9.8ft span and a draft of up to 3.5m/11.5ft.

Attached to the 26.5m/86.9ft mast is a sail plan with a main sail of 135-145m2/1453-1560.7ft2, a jib of 90m2/968.7ft2 and a code zero of 200m2/2152.8ft2.

The World Series will take place in the second half of 2019 and in 2020, with a Christmas Regatta to end the year.

Timetable running up to the 36th America's Cup:

• Entries open - January 1 2018

• Entries close - June 30 2018

• America’s Cup World Series - 2019 - 2020

• America's Cup Christmas regatta - December 2020

• Emirates Team New Zealand

On 6 September 2019, Emirates Team New Zealand launched its mono-hull racing boat TE AIHE. Her aerodynamic design represented by an arrow-headed appearance, while two deep cockpits are desgined to increase efficiency while underway. TE AIHE was designed to strict rules of the competiton and her total weight doe not exceed 6.5T. This racing boat is expected to reach a speed of more than 50 knots.

• Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli

• INEOS Team UK

• American Magic NYYC

Of note is a change in the rules requiring at least 10 of the 12 crew to have to be citizens of the country that they represent, while the other two must meet strict residency criteria.

In addition, defenders Emirates Team New Zealand will not be taking part in the challenger series unlike previous winners ORACLE Team USA and will enter the competition once the America's Cup commences.

Stars + Stripes Team USA have joined the competition as late challengers and are liable to pay a $1,000,000 USD late entry fee with is due in instalments before the 1st of October 2019.

Although Royal Netherlands Yacht Club, DutchSail, were one of the original contenders, they were unable to secure a naming rights sponsor and therefore could not commit by the set deadline, resulting in their withdrawal from the competition.

Royal Malta Yacht Club also intended to take part in the 36th America's Cup, however a $40,000,000 USD package promised by backers did not come to pass.

No fee for luxury yachts dropping anchor in waters around Auckland

Auckland Council in consultation with NZ Marine have dropped fees for luxury yachts over 40m/131ft in length that wish to drop anchor in the waters surrounding the city. Instead, there will be a new visitor-friendly 12-month navigation and safety fee for vessels that fit into this size category, allowing foreign visitors and New Zealand residents from other parts of the country to take their time exploring the clear waters, coves and sandy beaches surrounding the metropolis. Upgraded marina facilities in the run-up to the 36th America’s Cup

New Zealand has a wall-established marine industry with shipyards on both islands and extensive repair and refit facilities in Auckland, and these are being further developed along with additional berthing ahead of the influx of superyachts expected for the America’s Cup.

New infrastructure includes a marina in the Bay of Islands plus a superyacht village in Auckalnd for the event. There will also be travel lifts available at Vessel Works in the Bay of Plenty and at Orams Marine in Auckland.

DYT Yacht Transport is also providing extra services to take luxury yachts to New Zealand waters for 2020/21 and returning them to the Mediterranean in time for the summer luxury yacht charter season.

Local luxury yacht charter attractions

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and as such has a massive array of galleries, museums, boutiques and shopping centres with international brands on offer. Nicknamed the 'City of Sails', one in three households owns a boat and the stunning surrounding islands and coast are well worth exploring on the water.

The Bay of Islands - North of Auckland, the Bay of Islands reportedly has the second bluest skies anywhere in the world (after Rio de Janeiro) boasts some incredible beaches and ideal conditions for sailing and wind-powered water toys. The sport-fishing here is known internationally, with visitors coming to hook a kingfish or marlin. Dolphins and whales can also be spotted within the region, and the uninhabited islands make for a quiet sunbathing spot away from the pressures of the modern world.

The Bay of Plenty & Hauraki Gulf Marine Park - With 80 islands to explore by yacht, it's possible to spend an entire week exploring the northern tip of the North Island and still not see all of its wonders. Rangitoto Island is a dormant volcano and the closest island to Auckland. Trails lead to the summit where visitors have sweeping views of the surroundings, and the island is also home to the world's largest pohutukawa forest, a tree that blooms with red flowers over the southern hemisphere summer and is often called the 'New Zealand Christmas Tree'.

Great Barrier Island is covered in historic sites including a whaling station, shipwrecks, and gold and copper mines. Snorkelers, Scuba divers and fishing groups come to the region to explore the crystal clear waters, and hikers will be in their element with the pristine beaches and trails through the forest on offer.

Poor Knights Islands - This area has a reputation as one of the best locations for Scuba divers to visit, offering incredible biodiversity in crystal clear waters, with attractions including a nudibranch wall and caves to suit more experienced divers, whereas beginners also have a selection of impressive sites to practise skills and gain experience.

J CLASS TO HOLD 2024 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BARCELONA IN 2024

image1

No history of the America’s Cup is complete without mention of the J Class, the magnificent sloops that competed for the trophy in three editions between 1930 and 1937. Their grace and beauty reflected a time where a booming global economy brought some of the most colourful tycoons to compete for the oldest international sports trophy in the world. Names like Sir Thomas Lipton, Harold S Vanderbilt and Sir Thomas Sopwith graced a period that is known as the ‘Golden Age’ of the America’s Cup before the realities of the aftermath of the Second World War, saw the smaller, more affordable 12 Metre Class replace the J Class.
