Exterior design

One third of the Oceanis 51.1’s hull is now stepped. In addition to the aesthetics of this flared shape, the new hull creates additional interior space allowing for exciting new layouts on a boat this size.  With emphasis on taut cruiser lines, she is a joy to move around and reassuringly safe. The spacious cockpit, many relaxation and sun bathing areas, as well as an aft swim platform, promise true comfort.

Interior Design

The large hull portholes bathe the boat in light and elegantly emphasize the interior design by Nauta Design creating a wonderful atmosphere.  A choice of brushed oak or mahogany woodwork ambiances increases the opportunities for customization.

RENEWAL OF THE CRUISING YACHT

The Oceanis 51.1 is spacious, elegant, cleverly designed, and fast, and successfully revisits the cruising yacht.

51 ft beneteau sailboat

The furling mast, self-tailing jib and all the halyards and sheets on the standard model are all brought back to a single winch at each of the helm stations, making her simple and easy to sail. As for harbour manoeuvring, Dock & Go technology simplifies everything.

THE HEIGHT OF COMFORT

The architectural choices that stand out on the Oceanis 51.1 are reflected in her habitability and an incredible amount of space. Inside, the owner cabin has an en-suite shower room and toilet, and a 1.6 m wide island bed.  A fully-fitted U-shaped galley has many convenient appliances. Truly a space to enjoy together, it is as pleasant to use under sail as it is at anchor.

Fitted with an extra-long carbon or aluminium mast, the Oceanis 51.1 First Line has up to 35% additional sail area in high-tech materials. The boat has a 2.8 m lead bulb keel in this high performance configuration. This reduces weight and hydrodynamic drag. To complete this version, a composite steering wheel, top-of-the-range deck fittings and boomsprit marry speed and cruising and promise exciting new sensations.

A connected boat

The mobile application, Seanapps , and its onboard unit lets you view the status of the boat's various systems (battery charge, fuel or water tank levels, maintenance scheduling) via your smartphone, as well as planning your route or reviewing your sailing status using your mobile phone.

Beneteau 51.1 Boat Review

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: May 1, 2018

51 ft beneteau sailboat

Inspiration is not always intuitive. The first model in the seventh (and latest) generation of Beneteau’s Oceanis cruising yachts, the new 51.1, owes its distinctive hull form not to the world of luxury sailboats but to an all-carbon, hard-chined rocket ship, the Juan Kouyoumdjian-designed Rambler 88. The result is a distinctive, and I think good-looking, change to a product line that’s now entering its third decade. But while Rambler in race mode is a stripped-out shell that requires a full squad of race-hardened deck apes to sail, the creature comforts abound on the 51.1, from its plumb bow to the push-button fold-down swim-platform transom, and by design, it’s a sailboat that’s meant to be cruised by a couple, with occasional friends and family. Several seasons ago, Beneteau reintroduced chines as a design element, originally in its First line of racer-cruisers, then in several Sense models and more recently in the Oceanis range. The hard-edge look, quickly adopted by a host of other builders, is credited with providing (in varying degrees, depending on whom you talk to) style, form stability and interior volume.

With the 51.1, Beneteau general manager Gianguido Girotti and the designers at Berret Racoupeau have taken the whole chines concept to an extreme — on the 51.1, they literally run from bow to stern — an idea, Girotti says, that came from observing the lines of Rambler, arguably one of the fastest boats in the world.

Retractable davits

In theory, carrying the chines the length of the hull allows for a fine entry, decreased wetted surface and greater buoyancy, which translates into a faster and more powerful hull form in the case of Rambler, and not by coincidence, more interior space for luxury living in the 51.1.

This is a big boat. The cockpit is the equivalent of what you might find on a 55-footer, says Girotti, and down below, well, just take note that in the forward cabin, besides the separate head and shower compartments and a pair of hanging lockers, the island queen berth has room to walk on either side of it and port and starboard nightstands and couches too!

Stepping aboard to have a look, the first question that came to mind was “How will this boat sail?” It turns out the 51.1 moves along quite well.

In a little more than 10 knots of breeze, the speed on the GPS read 7.4 knots upwind under main and 90 percent self-tacking jib. And it held that pace when we bore off to a reach and rolled out a code zero set on the boat’s composite bowsprit.

“Twin rudder, spins quite fast,” I jotted in my notes as I tacked the boat back and forth a couple of times without lifting even a finger to adjust either the main or jib sheets, both of which were led to winches near the twin wheels.

If I had to gripe about something, it would be the full bimini that covered the cockpit and made it difficult to see the sails, particularly the main. There’s an obvious solution, of course, which would be just to take it down.

The 51.1 comes standard with in-mast furling, the aforementioned self-tacking headsail and a 7-foot-7-inch iron keel. From there, there are options for a 105 percent genoa, code zero, asymmetric spinnaker, shoal keel (6 feet 1 inch) or a Performance package that adds about 5 feet to the standard 70-foot-1-inch mast and includes a deep iron keel (9 feet 2 inches) with a lead bulb.

Beneteau vacuum-infuses its hulls, which, like the decks, are balsa-cored. A layer of vinylester resin protects the hull from blistering. The boat can be ordered either with a German-style double-ended mainsheet system, as on the boat we sailed, or with a cockpit arch on which blocks for the mainsheet are mounted. I’d opt for the former, which gives you better control over sail shape.

For the record, a base boat sells for right around $600,000, but a long list of options — including up to five cabins and three heads, not to mention finishes, fabrics, teak decking, air conditioning and Dock & Go rotating saildrive package — can add considerably to the bill. The boat we sailed carried a price tag of $630,000. It was powered with the optional 110 hp Yanmar, with shaft drive. An 80 hp Yanmar and saildrive are standard.

Inside the Beneteau Oceanis 51.1

Wide side decks on the 51.1 are appreciated when moving about. Lower stays are brought inside to the cabin top and outers attach to the hull, which means you don’t have to wiggle around either when heading forward. In the cockpit, there are large cushioned lounging areas to either side of the companionway that would make fine berths with the dodger up at night, or sun beds with it down during the day. I found the cockpit seats to be quite comfortable thanks to the cushioned coamings. They flank a sizable drop-leaf table that has a fridge beneath it forward and room for a life raft in a compartment aft.

Like other recent Beneteaus, the companionway below is more like a staircase, with good handrails to either side. The boat we sailed was fitted with two aft cabins, each with hanging lockers and their own head and shower.

A well-equipped galley is forward to port, followed by what the builder calls the “owners area” — essentially a combination nav station and desk with an interesting seat that morphs into an athwartships recliner. Opposite all of this is a gigantic table surrounded by U-shaped seating that, all told, will seat 14.

The boat shown last fall at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, had brushed-oak woodwork offset by white fabric-covered panels. Ports in the hull and cabin top let in loads of light, and overhead hatches promised good ventilation in the owners cabin and saloon.

Abovedecks and below, the 51.1 offers multiple spaces for enjoying days and nights on the water, which is right in line with all the other models in the time-tested Oceanis range.

Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 – tested and reviewed

Beneteau’s oceanis 51.1 features a radical hull shape with ‘champagne glass’ sections. but does that lead to the sailing equivalent of lambrusco sam jefferson finds out.

Sailing Today Magazine review of Beneteau, Oceanis 51.1

C hines. Back in the days before yacht designers got hold of them, chines were generally steep coastal valleys – or in fact a method of taking cuts of meat from the spine of an animal (preferably dead). Anyway, once yacht designers got hold of them, they took on an entirely new meaning. In the world of yacht racing a chine – essentially inserting a hard angle into the profile of the hull shape – can provide a yacht with a performance boost in certain circumstances. In the world of yacht cruising, they are generally used to give a yacht a dramatic look and provide yet more internal volume aft.

Yet, in recent years, designers have begun to move away from the hard chine aft. To my mind this is no bad thing. From a purely aesthetic point of view I have always favoured a curved backside over an angular one. That’s just me though. You might feel differently: different strokes for different folks, as the Americans might say. Anyway, whatever the reason, chines are on the way out – or at least that seemed to be the case until the Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 turned up. She’s designed by Berret Racoupeau and the team. Evidently they were scratching their heads to try and work out how they could gain the internal volume of a chined hull without bucking the trend of a shapely, curved behind. Their answer was simple: stick the chine at the front of the boat.

Beneteau Oceanis 51.1

I had to smile when I first viewed this; the last time I saw a boat with a chine at the bow it was a Westerly Centaur which, for all its admirable qualities, is not necessarily the easiest thing on the eye. In fairness, those in the world of racing will be familiar with this concept of a forward chine which was used to good effect in the Rambler 88 fairly recently; a yacht which, unlike any Westerly Centaur I’m familiar with, won the Voiles de St Barths regatta. In common with Rambler 88, the Oceanis 51.1 carries off this forward chine with aplomb. The yacht looks smart and purposeful – a cunningly thought out two-tone paint scheme also offsets her relatively high freeboard and the coachroof is low and sleek; the chine runs from the bow about two-thirds of the way down the hull and when you view the yacht out of the water it really is a very distinctive step that adds a huge amount of volume to the hull forward. Back aft the chine melts away and the stern swells out to a nicely rounded and shapely transom with twin rudders tucked beneath. It’s an interesting new take on things and this is always exciting as cruising yachts are rarely revolutionary; yet there is something almost daring about this new yacht.

Sailing Today Magazine review of Beneteau, Oceanis 51.1

Chine on you crazy diamond

Beneteau appears to have gone a bit bonkers when it comes to branding up the range too, and there is a slightly bewildering choice of configurations comprising ‘First’ for a racier option, ‘Comfort’ for a more out and out cruising option and ‘Easy’ for a nice simple set up featuring a self-tacking headsail. Indeed, the main difference between the three iterations is in the rig and keel with the ‘First’ version available with a carbon mast, 35 per cent more sail area and a deep bulbed keel as standard. In addition, the deck hardware is upgraded. This was the model I tested. In contrast, the Comfort version features that distinctive giant arch over the cockpit which Beneteau introduced across its range a few years back now. Meanwhile, the Easy version comes with a self-tacking headsail, as already mentioned, plus in mast furling. Combine that with keel options of 9ft 2in, 7ft 7in (the standard version) and 6ft 1in for the shoal draft version and you have a versatile and flexible yacht. I stepped aboard the yacht via the electric drop down bathing platform with a second step that flips down obligingly and beckons you aboard. Having negotiated this, you find yourself in a comfortable and carefully thought out cockpit. The 51.1 has plenty of beam aft and that makes for more than ample room.

Sailing Today Magazine review of Beneteau, Oceanis 51.1

In common with many of the latest cruising yachts, Beneteau has opted to create two very separate areas in the cockpit. Forward of the twin wheels is entirely devoted to the important business of lounging and there is a substantial single cockpit table which has room beneath for a liferaft, plus excellent handholds. Other than that, it’s all about masses of lounging room with yet more cockpit cushions set into the aft section of the coachroof itself. The only drawback I could see is that it did mean that the mainsheet traveller was very far forward which might make it somewhat heavy in strong winds. Move aft, and you get to the technical end of the yacht; the coachroof is entirely devoid of winches and clutches and instead all of the running rigging has been set in channels underneath the cockpit coamings, which all emerge right in front of the helmsman’s binnacles and can be dealt with via two pairs of winches which service both helming positions. There is also a huge lazarette back here and the dinghy is deployed via those fiddly telescopic pull up davits that personally I have never managed to deploy without getting them jammed or something mysteriously falling off.

Sailing Today Magazine review of Beneteau, Oceanis 51.1

The binnacles were somewhat on the small side I felt, and the result was that the throttle lever didn’t fit and was instead set low down and not in the ideal position for a spot of close quarters manoeuvring but other than that, this is a very efficient and ergonomically well thought out yacht which proved a breeze to handle. Wandering up forward, there was adequate deck width and decent handholds. The bow terminates in a sprit with an integrated anchor roller. There is the option of having the forward bow locker as crew quarters if required and this space is surprisingly pleasant compared to the dank dungeons that I have personal experience of.

Sailing Today Magazine review of Beneteau, Oceanis 51.1

Rise and chine

Step down below via an extremely carefully thought out companionway which has been thoughtfully angled and features plentiful handholds and you’re in for a surprise. There’s just so much space. You can’t help but feel like going straight back up on deck to look on the side of the hull to check that this genuinely is a 51ft yacht as the label suggests. There is an awful lot of volume down here and this is particularly obvious forward where that chine really does open up the opportunity for what has to be class leading amounts of volume. There is also an awful lot of light. This is partly due to the vast amount of portlights and skylights, but it also helps that Beneteau has introduced a new finish, termed brushed oak, that the test boat was decked out in and gave the yacht a very pleasant ambience. There are four different layout options with anything up to four separate double berths with various permutations on this theme.

Sailing Today Magazine review of Beneteau, Oceanis 51.1

The choice favoured by most cruisers will probably be one large master cabin forward and a pair of doubles aft. If you choose this arrangement you get a positively palatial master bedroom with separate shower and heads. Meanwhile there are en-suites for both aft cabins. In the main saloon area the galley is C-shaped and compact with an excellent bracing point should you be cooking up a storm in a storm.

Forward of the galley there is an L-shaped seating arrangement which segues in to a seating area abaft of the chart table. The chart table is actually far more generous than many of the 51.1’s rivals and it is testament to the vast amount of extra internal volume that this is possible. All in all, the interior felt lighter and noticeably different to many other production yachts and I must say I stepped back into the cockpit feeling deeply impressed with the manner in which Beneteau appear to have upped their game.

Sailing Today Magazine review of Beneteau, Oceanis 51.1

All of this is all very well, but there is absolutely no point in managing to create all of this extra space if the boat sails like an absolute stinker. I tested the yacht off the Catalan coast and conditions were pretty modest with the breeze varying between 10-15kt.

I was interested to see if she might be a bit sticky in such conditions as that flare forward might start to drag as she heeled to the light winds. As previously mentioned, Beneteau had very wisely presented us with one of the ‘First’ models of its range which came equipped with the extra sail area, upgraded sails and a carbon mast. This doubtless all helped in the modest conditions and I have to say that the yacht behaved impeccably.

Sailing Today Magazine review of Beneteau, Oceanis 51.1

On the wind she was achieving a comfortable 6-7kt and she was light on her feet with a really impressive turn of speed. As if to back this up, I followed up a sail on the 51.1 with a quick spin in the Beneteau Oceanis 55 and – admittedly minus a gennaker and with the breeze easing – this big yacht felt much more like what she was – a big, heavy cruising yacht. All in all, the 51.1 was also exceptionally easy to handle and I have to say that all manufacturers have made real leaps and bounds when it comes to the leads of running rigging to ensure it all runs smoothly and is placed in precisely the right spot for short handing. If I had one minor niggle it was that the helm felt a little stiffer than I expected.

Under power, the yacht behaved well and there was plenty of grip from the deep keel. Marry that with bow thrusters and you could turn the yacht on a sixpence and ease her into a tricky berth with the minimum of fuss.

Sailing Today Magazine review of Beneteau, Oceanis 51.1

Sam’s verdict

The Oceanis 51.1 left me pleasantly surprised. I often come away from yachts from the ‘big four’ manufacturers – Beneteau, Jeanneau, Hanse and Bavaria – impressed with the sheer competence of them, but sometimes struggling to differentiate one from the other. That wasn’t the case with the 51.1; she had an individuality to her that genuinely made an impression on me.

The champagne glass forward sections seemed to simply provide her with masses of increased volume, yet she remained slippery in light airs. I would have loved to see how she performed pounding into a heavy head sea but in the conditions we did get she was excellent, and once you get your head around the ‘First’ ‘Easy’ and ‘Comfort’ options they do actually keep things nice and simple and make this a massively versatile yacht. Likewise, the interior feels far less bland than many of her predecessors and contemporaries and I found it a genuinely pleasant and incredibly roomy space to be in.

What also left me impressed is that Beneteau is using its financial muscle to try to push the boundaries and that is good news for consumers.

Beneteau Oceanis 51.1: Elegant & Easy

There are a lot of different priorities that can take center stage when it comes to boat design. Going sailing is the best way to truly discover what they are for a particular boat. This month, I went sailing on the new Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 and it was a voyage of discovery indeed. The 51.1 is the first release of the new “point-one” series in the immensely successful Oceanis line, and it represents some subtle, but significant, updates to previous iterations. The boat I sailed is the first 51.1 in the Pacific Northwest, and our trip on Lake Union happened to be her maiden voyage under sail.

The Design: All About Options

Similar to some prior Beneteau offerings, the Oceanis 51.1 is all about options. There are different packages that offer three draft depths, two mast heights, and an array of interior layouts and other options. The boat I sailed is likely to have the broadest appeal for Pacific Northwest cruisers: it had the standard-height mast (70’3”), the medium depth draft (7’9”), the “downwind package” to better utilize flying sails including a Code Zero, and was upgraded to the more powerful engine (110hp) with a shaft in place of the stock 80hp with a saildrive.

Returning to the notion of design priorities, my first and lasting impression of the 51.1 is that it might be the easiest boat I’ve ever sailed, of any size. Hull form, interior layout, or sailplan can be sexier to talk about, but the systems that help us sail and the ergonomics of a deck layout are of deep design importance and have a massive impact on our enjoyment of day-to-day sailing adventures. The Beneteau design team, in this case led by naval architect Berret Racoupeau, has arranged a bounty of sail-assisting tools into a simple and elegant amalgamation. These include a self-tacking jib, an in-mast furling main, a German mainsheet system (which can be trimmed from either side of boat), dual electric self-tailing winches at each of the two helm stations, and the clean and intuitive arrangement of six clutches just forward of the winches that manage the under-deck-led control lines for everything you need to get the sails out and go. Some of what makes the deck appealing is what isn’t there: there were no jib tracks on the wide side decks because of the self- tacking track in front of the mast, there’s no traveler because the mainsheet attachment point is on fixed dodger arch, and there isn’t a single line in the seating area of the cockpit at all. From the moment we started to unfurl the main until the final dockline was made fast around a cleat at the end of our sail, every process seemed effortless, and it put me at ease. The sophistication of the layout for sailing was reminiscent of the finest gourmet cuisine—the ingredients might be available to others, but it’s abundantly clear when the finished product is a cut above.

Performance

Even a brilliant deck layout wouldn’t overcome a boat that doesn’t sail, and the Beneteau Oceanis 51.1’s sailing performance more than held up to its other impressive features. I’ll be honest, as a performance sailor, I was ready to be underwhelmed. We took the boat out on a lovely, but light, Lake Union day with 4-8 knots of breeze. Many of the systems that make this boat so easy to sail sometimes bring compromises in performance, most notably the ever-more-popular stock configuration of a self-tacking jib and in-mast furling main—these do not allow most boats to sail as well as they could with a traditional set- up with more adjustable headsail sheeting and a main with horizontal battens and a real roach. My skepticism was evident when I tactlessly inquired, “Is that main out all the way?” after we unfurled the sail for the first time. Yet, once we settled in, I was quite pleased with how the sails trimmed and found that the boat did admirably on reaches and very well close-hauled. We cruised around the lake at an easy 3-5 knots on most points of sail. Upwind provided the best sailing of the day, and the boat found the combination of efficient waterline shape and hull form stability on its full-length chine and pushed nearly six knots to weather at around 45° true wind and 30° apparent. Also evident going to weather is the improved helm balance thanks to dual rudders—which are the standard configuration for all “point-one” series boats (a first for Beneteau). In the strongest breeze of the day, I let go of the helm for a full minute and the boat continued to track in perfect balance.

The combination of conditions and sailplan were never going to make us look too cool downwind on our test day, but with a bowsprit and an optional package that includes a 2:1 spinnaker halyard, it’s a clear signal that the design encourages (or even expects) most owners to add a Code Zero or an asymmetric spinnaker (or both) to the stock sailplan.

I have spent a lot of time on a racing boat of a similar size, and obviously I knew this would be a different animal entirely. That said, my previous experience on larger boats of varying designs (including dedicated cruising boats) has instilled an appropriate respect for all that goes into boat handling on larger boats where the power and loads increase exponentially. That’s why I was genuinely surprised at the confidence I quickly developed in the systems and the general accessibility of the sailplan. Two winches at each helm station make line management a lot less of a headache than it would be with only one; and since they’re both two-speed powered winches, the only part of you that’s going to be worn out after sailing is the end of your finger. Much more than I would have anticipated before sailing the 51.1, I began to easily envision how feasible it would be to handle this boat for the average sailing couple, or even a singlehander.

One sailing observation that might be personal to me, with so many simple systems and sail controls that are easy to set-and-forget, I was making more adjustments with driving instead of sail trim. In fairness, Lake Union demands a lot of adjustments, but on more than one occasion, I found myself altering course and thinking, “I normally would have eased out, but everything is cleated off for now, so oh well.” It’s a different mindset, to be sure, but I could imagine situations when this could be problematic.

Though neither was particularly on display during my test sail, there are a couple of design evolutions that are likely to catch the eye of potential buyers. The first is a new infusion technique that expands on the previous approach—now, the hull and deck are both completely resin-infused, helping ensure even strength of the layup while saving weight. Specifically, the 51.1 gives three more feet of length overall and slightly more beam than its predecessor in the line (the Oceanis 48), but only increases the overall displacement by about 1,400 lbs. The other big update is the change from a chine that was previously only on the aft portion of the hull to one that carries all the way forward to the bow. Chines are hardly new technology, but even the extra couple of inches of available interior volume contributes to the sensation of enormity in the V-berth cabin, which boasts a queen-sized bed that has walk- around room on both sides. And, having test sailed one other boat with full chines in wavy conditions, I would forecast that this boat would provide a similar sea-kindly sensation of bow buoyancy in its movement.

We put the capable 110hp engine with its fixed prop through its paces, momentarily breaking the speed limit law on Lake Union. The top available speed was just above 9 knots, but cruising speed would likely be more like 8 or 8.5 knots at more efficient RPM levels. Still, the two-knot gap between that and my default expectation of 6 knots cruising speed is the difference between a 10 hour delivery from Seattle to Anacortes (with neutral current) and one that only takes 7.5 hours. A high-end after-market propeller could possibly even increase those cruising speeds.

Not surprisingly, the interior of the Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 leaves nothing to be desired. The first clever element I noticed is a pair of sturdy stainless steel handrails (leather wrapped, of course) for the companionway stairs.

Beneteau 51.1 Interior

On a boat this big, there’s more freeboard, which means more stairs to get into the cabin. With those handrails, you can safely and comfortably go down the companionway facing forward. Indeed, it’s luxuriously spacious, but it’s functional as well. The C-shaped galley to port looks like a place I’d happily spend a lot of time. It is complete with ample cabinetry and cold storage space (fridge and freezer). The salon seating to starboard is provides enough room to entertain, and some clever seating options to port mean that it doesn’t have to feel like the whole party is crammed into one half of the boat. The owner’s cabin in the V-berth, with its large side-accessed bed, also has an en-suite head and shower, each in a separate compartment, meaning more getting-ready space and a head that isn’t perpetually covered in shower water. It’s a big boat, but it’s hard to imagine that Beneteau could wring any more comfort out of the interior space.

Final Thoughts on the Beneteau Oceanis 51.1

Viewed from the dock or the deck or the cushy interior, the Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 is a step forward in quality and elegance. It performs well under power and sail. And most importantly, it just felt so easy to use. It’s the kind of boat that will make its owners want to untie the lines and pull the sails out more often than other boats. I hope they invite me to join them!
