Can anyone tell me how well these boats sail? The engine is a Universal Atomic 5411, would this be the original engine? Are parts easy to source? What is the height of the mast? I think this yacht’s mast has been replaced. Any help and general specifications info etc would be very gratefully received. Thanks Great sailing boats but not fast. Great cruising boat. what is the head room in a 28? Head room is just 6 feet I believe. I have one and I am 5’10 1/2″ and no problem. Hi, I have a Seasprite 30 and i was asked by the hauler how long my mast is ( for un-stepping costs) and i am embarrassed to say i did not know. Can someone tell me what it is? It would be much appreciated. Tx kevin dunn I need to know the headstay length for a SS 28. Any help would be most appreciated. Leave a Reply Cancel replyYour email address will not be published. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more. SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3 - SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement RatioA measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Ballast / Displacement * 100 Displacement / Length RatioA measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³ - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort RatioThis ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 ) - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening FormulaThis formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more. CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64) Also called the LUDERS 34. This listing is presented by SailboatListings.com . Visit their website for more information or to contact the seller. Sea Sprite 34?I know older boats with long overhangs are the worst possible candidates for liveaboards. I get that but I can’t help myself in spite of that. That said, I recently came across a Sea Sprite 34 that I’m considering, and I wanted to get the community’s feedback on the possibilities and shortcomings of the boat. It fits my price range, looks like it’s in fantastic condition, but I know it’s obviously no racer and won’t have an immense amount of storage space. Would it still be passable as a liveaboard and coastal cruiser for a single person with an elderly cat? Let’s hear your thoughts. That depends to some extent on how you intend to use the boat, i.e., keep it in a marina or anchored, length of time you'll be cruising without re-provisioning, whether the boat is equipped to meet your needs, such as refrigeration, solar, sufficient batteries, etc. Also, is the mattress thick and supportive enough to let you sleep well? (Some are adequate for weekending, but not for living aboard.) If you live in a marina, you can supplement your storage with a dock box or your mini van or even a cargo trailer. Cats tend to prefer Catalinas. It is a good-looking boat, and Luders is known as a good designer. The thing that first jumped out at me when looking at this: SailboatData.com - SEA SPRITE 34 Sailboat was the lack of any sort of shower setup. For living aboard, a shower is a good thing, even if you don't have many guests. A 50 gallon tank under the floorboards would provide enough water for a single live aboard, but is there a water heater? If there isn't, where would you put it? Is there refrigeration? If there isn't, where would you put the compressor? Where will you put the batteries needed to run all these things and others that didn't exist when this boat was built? THAT'S where the long, narrow, good-looking overhangs come back to bite you: lack of room for stuff. If there IS room, or if you don't need any of that stuff, and the boat's in good shape, then it's a different story. Definitely worth looking to see. abmessick11 said: Would it still be passable as a liveaboard and coastal cruiser for a single person with an elderly cat? Click to expand... Luders/Sea Sprite 34 Pros/Cons? I'm looking at an Alfred Luders designed '81 Sea Sprite 34 AKA Luders 34. She appears to be original except some electrical changes and interior soft goods changes. She is a fractional sloop with in mast furling for the main. Is this OE and were there any issues with the system?
