Dream: Inside the Breathtaking Conversion of the 106.5 Metre Superyacht

First published in the February 2019 edition of Boat International .

A life’s goal has been realised with Dream, a 106.5-metre conversion so massive and ambitious in its scale it would have been quicker and easier to start from scratch...

I’m doused from collar to sopping sandal in brine from a wave that has just crashed over the RIB’s bow – and the seascape before us is lively enough to whiten knuckles on grab handles. The côte may look particularly azure in the autumn sunshine but ploughing out of Monaco’s Port Hercule, tenders – and motherships – are bouncing around in an unstately fashion. Our target yacht is about the only stable point on the horizon, which is rather comforting.

As we step on to the broad swim platform and up to the aft deck, feeling a little as if we’ve just been rescued, 106.5-metre Dream towers above us, overwhelming in scale. And that’s just what you can see from the aft deck: there are also two lifts and four staircases for guests alone; a 260-square-metre master cabin, a 400-square-metre main saloon, a cinema and 22 guest cabins; a hotel-sized warren of crew and service areas (where a kindly stewardess tumble-dries my dress); six pantries and more than 270 kilometres of electrical cable powering it all. There are so many enormous decks that the GA takes up two whole pages at the end of this feature.

But then this boat has been a very long time in the making. “In 1953, at the age of seven, while dinghy sailing in the Glyfada gulf, outside my house, I came across the Onassis-owned Christina, the first real superyacht,” recalls  Dream ’s owner, George J Prokopiou. “I remember approaching the yacht’s stern on which Winston Churchill was smoking his cigar. This image has stuck with me ever since and generated the dream of a large yacht as a world cruising platform.”

Today, like Onassis, Prokopiou can properly be called a Greek shipping tycoon, having founded Dynacom Tankers, the shipping group Sea Traders and LNG transport company Dynagas. He has an engineering mind, extensive shipbuilding experience and his sea legs also extend to his leisure time, with a collection of four large motor and sailing boats – recently adding 69.5-metre Oceanfast  Nomad  to the collection. He chose to build  Dream  because “I could not find anything on the market to fulfil my needs and wishes”. He had also met naval architect Nikolas Dendrinos – “We share the same passion for sailing, yachting and the sea” – and they decided they could do something special together.

Dendrinos recalls: “He found this small passenger ship through a friend and he thought it would be a good idea for a conversion project. It was delivered in 1997 – it was doing cruises around the Mediterranean.” Dendrinos, who project-managed  Dream , works for Athens-based Olympic Yacht Services, owned by Prokopiou’s shipping company.

Established during the build, it now undertakes the operation, repairs, rebuilds and technical management of all the owner’s boats and plans to take on more clients in the 60-metre-plus range. “The other different thing about this project is that he wanted to build a boat himself,” says Dendrinos. “So this means that we hired a place in a shipyard in Greece and we organised from scratch. We designed, engineered and built everything for this project. We produced internally all the construction drawings for steel, systems, piping, integration and interior sub-constructions. We had subcontractors only for painting and the interiors.”

They also assembled a crack team of workers and designers with a wealth of experience, tapping established Greek-born, Italy-based yacht designer  Giorgio Vafiadis  to pen the new exterior and GA. Interior designers  Simone Ciarmoli and Miguel Queda  worked for years at powerhouse fashion brands, including Valentino, Prada and Armani before founding their own interior design firm, Ciarmoli Queda Studio, in Milan in 2009. Ciarmoli notes that making a success of the unorthodox set-up was one of their greatest achievements. “It was not like  Lürssen  or  Baglietto  or  Azimut . It was us: Simone and Miguel [and Vafiadis]; it was George, Nikolas and his team. And it was a big challenge,” he says.

Given the scope of the conversion this was certainly an ambitious project to tackle independently – the only original elements to remain were the hull and the engine room. So why do it this way? If you’re replacing so much, why not build from scratch? “I do know that he enjoys very much the construction at every stage,” says Vafiadis. “He was going to the yard almost every other day. And he likes to see the things coming. So once you have something existing it is easy to see what is coming – if you start from zero, you don’t see what is coming. Although you see renderings, it’s not like seeing the thing and saying here we do this, there we do that.”

As Prokopiou recalls: “Every evening we had an hour-long phone call with Nikolas reviewing all these [details]. This was a pleasure. I think as much as possible in terms of every detail, because I enjoy having such a good response; giving a small idea and then to see it in a drawing the next day – this is a huge advantage and it gives you the courage to do more things. You just say an idea, and then immediately… improved.”

In this way the mast, the swimming pool and the location of the helipad were all edited during the build. The method may ultimately have worked but he also reflects with frankness on the scope of the conversion.“In hindsight we should have started from scratch given the scale of the rebuild. [It] would have been simpler, faster and cheaper,” Prokopiou says.

The team’s efforts were aimed at some clearly defined goals. For the exterior design, says Vafiadis, “he wanted a classic style and he liked the look of something between a yacht and a ship. He didn’t want anything contemporary.” As Dendrinos puts it: “He wanted to have a classic nautical feel.” In terms of lifestyle, Prokopiou wanted plenty of cabins for family and guests, but also office space for himself and his colleagues, and excellent communications so that they could work effectively – this had to be a yacht he could live on. “The boat is made in a way that several groups of people can enjoy it without interfering one with the other,” says Vafiadis. “There can be a family group on one side of the boat and business people can be on the other.”

Another feature on the list was a quiet and vibration-free interior “even when sailing at full speed in bad weather”. To this end, Dendrinos installed huge volumes of insulation as well as floating walls and ceilings. Also requested were iPad controls (these are everywhere, even in guest cabins) and easy access to the sea for swimming, diving and watersports. For this, as well as a dive store and space to keep rugged tenders and the overhead cranes to launch them, there is a 42-square-metre, 12-tonne stern door that opens on to the sea. There’s also dynamic positioning for dives in protected areas where you can’t drop anchor.

More unusually, Prokopiou requested opening windows throughout, so that a natural breeze rather than air con could ventilate the boat in warm weather. In response, there are 66 opening portholes, 20 manually opening windows and 112 electrically opening windows, 500 kilograms each, 60 millimetres thick, custom made in Germany by Fehrmann and (the electric ones) controlled by iPads integrated to the “infotainment” system by VBH. “I think we have overdone it – in the toilet, instead of four windows opening, one would have been enough!” says the owner. To meet class safety requirements, all the windows are controlled by the Kongsberg Alarm Control and Monitoring System, which monitors them individually. Proximity switches tell it which are open, and they can be closed or locked automatically from the wheelhouse if necessary.

But first and foremost Prokopiou required a large and comfortable living space with balanced design – not too much of a problem with 4,702 gross tonnes to play with and the owner’s wife, Alexandra, on hand for decor selections. The request was for formality, but Ciarmoli and Queda steered away from dark woods. “I said, ‘OK, if you want formality why don’t we think about Marie Antoinette and Versailles.’”

Dream  is no confection: their interpretation of this style focuses on decorative wood panelling as well as delicate blue tones and acres of shagreen (invented by Jean-Claude Galluchat for Madame de Pompadour). It’s elegant and restrained – they cite minimalist master Jean-Michel Frank as an influence. But there are also nautical flights of fancy: in trompe l’oeil mosaics of sea creatures, or the insides of lifts decorated to feel as if you’ve dived into the blue. The vast array of spaces that Prokopiou and designers created are uniformly astonishing in scale and detail.

The more unusual ones include an intimate dining saloon set up around a central grill for teppanyaki and decorated in black and red lacquer like a glossy bento box; an owner’s deck that sprawls through a private dining room, office, steam bath, al fresco spa pool, cabins for immediate family and a lot more; VIP cabins in aqua tones with their own drinks cabinets and baths, and which open directly on to broad side decks; a main saloon centred with a ceiling light feature “like an oyster pearl”, says Ciarmoli, above powder-blue upholstery, which flows around to a mirrored bar and ceiling lights that recall abstract fishing nets. Further forward, the towering, multi-deck atrium in marble and glass is the architectural equivalent of a jewellery box, displaying the boat’s grand scale to spectacular effect.

Supporting all this is some serious tech. The wheelhouse has been rebuilt with an integrated bridge that allows the captain to watch and control the engine room and all systems, as well as monitor CCTV and night vision cameras. There’s also a sophisticated cruise-ship-style fire alarm system with a display to show the status of fire doors and temperature of all areas – and there are vertical escape routes from all compartments. “[Below decks] we stripped the engine room and rebuilt the engines and the generators. We have very good engines and generators,” says Dendrinos.

Aside from that, as he puts it, “everything you see on the GA is new”, and the bow, stern and all of the superstructure are new steel constructions. Under the waterline are controllable pitch propellers with independent rudders, a bow thruster and zero speed stabilisers – all super-sized, since  Dream  is one big boat.

Unusually for an owner, Prokopiou is also excited by the least glamorous kit on board. “It is interesting to see the kitchen, the refrigerators, because this is the heart of any ship. I have been to tankers, bulk carriers and LNG carriers, so I have seen a lot of the shipyards,” he says. But his favourite space on board? “The diving centre with all its toys and diving gear,” he says. “I like this space because it opens up to the sea and provides the perfect place for enjoying swimming, diving and watersports. It is the centre of the boat during the summer months.”

It’s easy to imagine Prokopiou whiling away an afternoon here, rightfully satisfied with the superyacht that he has created in his very own way. Perhaps he might even spot a small boy in a little dinghy in the distance, conceiving his own dream.

The ‘sick’ conspiracy theories surrounding the superyacht death of Mike Lynch

The scenario is so terrible, tragic and unlikely that nobody would dare dream it up.

In the early hours of Monday, the tech tycoon Mike Lynch and the guests on his yacht, the Bayesian, would have been reeling from an awful shock.

Lynch, 59, was on a lavish Mediterranean holiday with his family and defence team to celebrate his remarkable acquittal on fraud charges in the US after an over decade-long battle.

But on Saturday, Lynch’s co-defendant in the case, Stephen Chamberlain, was killed after being hit by a car while out jogging near his home in Cambridgeshire. The mood onboard must have been sombre on Monday morning when a tornado over water, known as a waterspout, struck the vessel as it was moored off the coast of Sicily.

At the time of writing, 15 of the guests and crew have been rescued. But six bodies – including that of Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter – have been recovered. The dead are believed to include: chef Recaldo Thomas, Lynch’s lawyer Christopher Morvillo, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International and Hiscox insurance, who had been a key defence witness in Lynch’s case.

According to experts, the chances of a yacht like the 184-foot Bayesian sinking while at anchor are minimal.

“I’ve been speaking to a lot of [people in] the industry today and they are as shocked as me – and just in utter disbelief that this could happen,” Stewart Campbell, editor-in-chief of Boat International, told the BBC.

Given the improbability of these two fatal accidents happening barely two days apart, it is perhaps no surprise that conspiracy theories began to swirl almost immediately afterwards.

Superyachts and billionaires are always fertile ground for speculation, even before an accident like the one that befell Lynch and his guests. The facts in this case make for a truly extraordinary set of coincidences, with added large corporate interests, a defeated US Justice Department and connections to intelligence agencies.

Fed such potent fuel, internet forums – in particular Reddit and X (formerly known as Twitter) – have exploded with conspiracy theories. Have the victims been bumped off by disgruntled US Justice officials? Shadowy corporate actors? Spooks? The Italian authorities have reportedly launched an investigation into whether portholes being left open might have contributed to the rapid sinking. As one Reddit user asserted, it’s the kind of case that “makes you question reality”.

Lynch, a British-born Irish entrepreneur with an academic background in probability theorems, was best known as a co-founder of Autonomy, a software company – Chamberlain was vice president of finance. In 2011, the firm was sold to the American computer giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion, netting Lynch hundreds of millions of pounds in the process. Forbes has put his personal wealth at over $1 billion.

But the deal was dogged from the start by accusations of foul play – HP accused Autonomy of artificially inflating its profits ahead of the sale. A year later, the firm wrote off billions of pounds worth of value from the deal. HP brought civil charges before the US Justice Department got involved. The odds were stacked against Lynch and Chamberlain. Fewer than one in 200 of such cases end in acquittal.

Speaking just before the trip about the moment of acquittal, Mr Morvillo, a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance, said, “Our side of the courtroom erupted, it was this electric moment. I’ve never seen anything like it in a courtroom before.”

For Lynch, who had been extradited to the US for trial and faced up to 25 years in prison, the verdict was akin to a rebirth . In an interview, he told The Times , “I’d had to say goodbye to everything and everyone, because I didn’t know if I’d be coming back.

“It’s bizarre, but now you have a second life,” he added. “The question is, what do you want to do with it?”

Elsewhere, he criticised the US system, saying that the only reason he was free was because he was able to spend more than $30 million fighting his case.

“The reason I’m sitting here, let’s be honest, is not only because I was innocent,” he said. “But because I had enough money not to be swept away by a process that’s set up to sweep you away.”

After the Autonomy sale, in 2013, Lynch cofounded Darktrace, a cybersecurity firm which hired former high-ranking MI5 agents for senior positions. He made Chamberlain his chief financial officer in 2016.

Given the series of unlikely events that has since befallen the pair, it is ironic that Lynch’s specialism was probability. His yacht, the Bayesian, was named after Thomas Bayes, the 18th-century mathematician and Presbyterian minister whose work revolutionised our understanding of predictions.

Bayes was famed for his mathematical formula, known as Bayes theorem, which calculates “Conditional Probability” – determining how likely something is to happen given a particular scenario. It is used in medical testing to calculate your chance of dying from cancer at a given age, and in finance, to weigh the risk of lending money to potential borrowers.

Social media was awash with comments picking out the link between the principle and the seeming improbability that Lynch and his co-defendant could be struck by disaster two days and some 1,800 miles apart.

Sander van der Linden, a professor of social psychology at the University of Cambridge who studies conspiracy theories, says the case is a classic example of how conspiratorial thinking can arise.

“The brain’s always trying to connect the dots,” he says. “It’s hard for people to deal with random coincidences, however unlikely they are.”

Van der Linden adds that the internet and social media have led to an explosion of conspiracy theories, giving rise to legions of amateur sleuths who question the official version of events. In some cases they even start trying to investigate the case themselves.

“Social media allows for this kind of online sleuthing where people are finding their own stories and sharing with other people, which creates this vortex of unverified rumours,” he says. “That aspect is new. Ideally there should be no information void, because that’s where people start concocting their own explanations.”

In the instant-reaction online cauldron, any gap in the official version of events is likely to be seized on and subjected to wild interpretations. Missing people inspire particular speculation. When Nicola Bulley, a mother of two, went missing on a walk in Lancashire in January 2023, the online theorising became so frenzied that amateurs turned up to do their own investigations. The recent riots across the country began in part because conspiracy theorists speculated about the identity of the Southport killer . The deaths of two Boeing whistleblowers, just months apart, has also prompted wild speculation.

The Lynch case has clearly inspired similar conjecture and added to a canon of conspiracies linked to other incidents at sea, in particular. The mysterious death of the wealthy and powerful in such circumstances is a type of “information void” going back hundreds of years. Think of Robert Maxwell, the father of the disgraced Ghislaine Maxwell who fell to his death on his £15m yacht, or Alfred Loewenstein, who vanished from his plane over the English Channel in 1928.

“Sure, you could say there’s a 0.001% chance that both of them [Lynch and Chamberlain] were assassinated by some secret organisation, but that’s not the most likely explanation,” van der Linden says. “People should be paying attention to evidence-based explanations, which take time to develop.”

Taken out of their remarkable coincidences, the facts of each accident are notably non-conspiratorial. Tornadic storms, of the sort that hit the Bayesian, are more common in hot or humid environments. The Mediterranean reached its highest recorded surface temperature last week, of 32 degrees. Chamberlain was hit on Newmarket Road in the village of Stretham. Police said that the driver, a 49-year-old woman from Haddenham, remained at the scene and is helping with inquiries.

“People don’t like the idea that life isn’t certain, that we don’t have all the answers, that you could die at any minute, that bad accidents could happen to you,” says van der Linden. “It’s easier to believe it was all intentional and planned [rather] than somebody disappearing because a storm sank his boat.”

None of this will be much comfort to the family and friends grieving their dead, being forced to endure some of the worst days of their lives amid fevered public speculation. A fanciful theory for the internet is an all too real loss for the people involved.

The Lynch family have said they are "devastated" and "in shock" but are being "comforted and supported by family and friends" after the Bayesian superyacht tragedy.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, was confirmed dead by local authorities on Thursday after the yacht he was holidaying on sunk in the early hours of Monday.

Family release statement; superyacht sinking latest

Divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage on Friday , which is believed to be that of his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. Her mother and Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares survived the disaster.

'She is my little angel, my star'

Miss Lynch's sister, Esme, said in a statement on Friday: "Hannah often burst into my bedroom and lay down with me.

"Sometimes beaming with a smile, sometimes cheeky, sometimes for advice.

"No matter what, she brought boundless love to me. She was endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend to me.

"And on top of all this, she had even more love to give endlessly to all her friends and passion to give to her incredible studies and goals. She is my little angel, my star."

Hannah and Mike Lynch

A spokesperson for the family said in a statement on Friday: "The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends.

"Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue. Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief."

Tributes have since poured in for both members of the family.

'Lit up the classroom'

Miss Lynch "lit up the classroom with her energy, passion for learning and sheer intelligence", Jon Mitropoulos-Monk, head of English at Latymer Upper School in west London, said.

"I've never taught someone who combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm in the way Hannah did," he said on Friday.

He added that when she was awarded her place to study at Oxford she sought out every member of staff to "thank them individually and give them a hug".

Family friend Patrick Jacob said he has "never met anybody like Hannah", describing her as "charming and ferociously intelligent with an insatiable thirst for life and knowledge".

"We have lost one of our brightest stars whose future held so much promise. Her loss is unbearable," he added.

Hannah Lynch

Miss Lynch's school friend Katya Lacie said she had a "beautiful soul".

"Being with Hannah made me feel whole and happy. She is the most special friend anyone could ask for and I will always love Hannah," she said.

Andrew Kanter, a close friend and former colleague of her father, described Mr Lynch as "the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known".

"There is simply no other UK technology entrepreneur of our generation who has had such an impact on so many people," he said.

Sushovan Hussain, a school friend and former colleague of Mr Lynch, also knew Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloom, his wife Judy, and Mr Lynch's lawyer Chris Morvillo, who also died when the yacht sunk.

He said Mr Lynch's death "leaves an unfillable hole in my life", adding it is "tragic beyond words".

Survivor remembers 'diamond' Hannah

Sasha Murray, the chief stewardess on the Bayesian, who survived the sinking, said in a statement those who knew Hannah knew she was "a diamond in a sea of stars".

After calling her "bright, beautiful and always shining," Ms Murray said: "What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.

"While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.

"I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive."

'A heart as big as his brain'

Family friend Albert Read said he "never met anyone like Mike".

Mr Read described him as "a searing intellect, a steel that would transform the world around him, an instinct for family and friends - organising children's treasure hunts, big gatherings of neighbours in Suffolk - and, with Angela, a determination to light up the worlds of art and science for his two beloved daughters.

"Warm, funny, brilliant, loyal and exceptionally brave, with a heart as big as his brain."

The yacht sank in a freak storm off the coast of Sicily earlier this week.

'Fantastic neighbour'

Ruth Leigh lived next door to Mr Lynch in Suffolk for 15 years.

On Thursday, she described them as "fantastic neighbours" and said the tech tycoon "never played on his position" and was "very friendly and down-to-earth" despite his fortune.

"Even though they were wealthy and influential people there was never any airs and graces," Ms Leigh told Sky News.

"He always went to the trouble of remembering your name, of asking after your partner or your children. From the very start they were fantastic neighbours - very friendly and down-to-earth.

"He'd come from a very ordinary background and through his own brains and intellect, he'd made a really great company and come up with some incredible ground-breaking tech. He was always very moral. He gave to charity very generously and never played on his position."

She described his death so soon after the end of his legal troubles as "the saddest thing I've ever heard".

"The whole point about this trip to Italy was taking his friends and family to say thank you. That's what makes it even more tragic," she added.

"Losing somebody so kind, compassionate, and full of integrity must leave a hole that cannot be filled."

Who is Mike Lynch?

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US and spent a year under house arrest in San Francisco before he was cleared of 15 charges of fraud earlier this summer by a jury.

Prosecutors claimed he deliberately overstated the value of Autonomy, the company he founded in 1996, when he sold it to Hewlett Packard in 2011. He always denied wrongdoing.

'Brain the size of a planet'

His former colleague told Sky News on Thursday he had a "brain the size of a planet" and was a "lovely man".

David Tabizel co-founded Autonomy with Mr Lynch and the pair remained good friends. He described him as a "remarkable individual" and the "brightest man I've met in my life".

"He had a remarkable set of personality traits that we rarely see in Britain," he said.

"Before him there was no British tech scene. He showed us we can be world-class."

Mr Tabizel told of Mr Lynch's "inner child", that he "loved video games", had a life-size train set in his garden, and how they animated a cartoon dog for their office, for which they both recorded the "barking noises".

Commenting on his legal struggles, Mr Tabizel said he "never heard him lie or exaggerate" and he was "interested in the truth... in cutting through the noise".

"For him to be accused of manipulating his profits. It was an extraordinary thing. It just wasn't Mike. I loved that man and he should be celebrated as a hero."

David Yelland, Mr Lynch's former PR adviser and former editor of The Sun newspaper, paid tribute to him in a post on X.

He said: "All those that knew and loved Mike are thinking of Angela and their surviving daughter Esme as they struggle to come to terms with such unimaginable loss.

"We have lost a man who was failed in life by his country and his peers when he needed them most - as he looked for help in the unjust US demand that he be extradited - and he has then suffered the most unfair and brutal of fates."

Mr Yelland said he had spoken to Mr Lynch just before he set sail on the yacht.

He also described him as a "dreamer of dreams not just for himself but for all those that knew him, worked with him or invested with him".

The entrepreneur had "exciting plans to contribute much more to the country he loved," he added.

Lord Browne, former chief executive of BP and now chairman of BeyondNetZero, said Mr Lynch was "the person who catalysed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK".

"His ideas and his personal vision were a powerful contribution to science and technology in both Britain and globally. We have lost a human being of great ability," he wrote.

'Privileged to have known him'

Sky's Ian King said he "feels very privileged to have known and spoken with Mike Lynch over many years".

He described him as a "visionary and original thinker with a passion for building businesses". "There are sadly too few like him in the UK," he added.

The Royal Academy of Engineering, where Mr Lynch was a former council member, donor, and mentor, said it is "deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mike Lynch".

Sending condolences to his family, they added: "Mike became a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008 and we have fond memories of the active role he played in the past as a mentor, donor, and former council member. He was also one of the inaugural members on the enterprise committee."

A spokesperson for technology industry group TechUK said: "Mike Lynch was a hugely significant and pioneering figure in the UK technology sector.

"Our hearts go out to all of the families and friends who have been impacted by these tragic events," they said.

Jonathan Bloomer is the chairman of Morgan Stanley Pic: Hiscox/ Linkedin

Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on Bayesian statistical inference - where his family's ill-fated yacht got its name.

The software's global success earned him a reputation as the "British Bill Gates" and enabled companies to trawl through huge swathes of data more efficiently.

His Cambridge thesis is thought to be one of the most-read pieces of research in the institution's library.

There was huge outcry from politicians and business leaders when Home Secretary Priti Patel approved a judge's extradition order for him to be sent to the US for trial in 2023.

Breaking news, career coach reveals 8 questions you should ask job interviewers to land your dream gig.

Bag secured.

Emily Rezkalla, a career coach who owns Em Rez Consulting , has revealed “example-based” interview questions candidates should ask a hiring manager to land a job.

In a one-minute clip posted on her TikTok account @emrezkalla , content creator Rezkalla, 29, acted out an interview scenario in which the candidate secured the position due to the clever questions she asked.

Two adult business people make work interview against office background

Even when applicants nail every query asked during their interview, they sometimes fall short when the interviewer flips the script and asks them if they have any questions about the role for which they’re applying.

One of the worst things to do is say “no” because it shows the company you need more interest in and curiosity about the position.

Rezkalla declares that although your brain may feel like “mush” after answering a battery of questions, you must remember that this is your chance for a “last impression.”

The Canadian says that you must stand out, channel your “star candidate” energy and ask in-depth follow-up questions about the role and company.

The self-proclaimed “career pivot mentor,” who shares career growth hacks online with more than 194,000 followers, curated a list of questions people should keep in their back pockets if asked.

Questions you should ask at the end of your job interview

  • What’s an example of how you’d like the star candidate to contribute to the company beyond the job responsibilities?
  • What’s the biggest challenge the team is facing right now that you want the person in this role to resolve?
  • What are some examples of professional development opportunities that you’ve specifically benefited from at the company?
  • What kind of support does the company provide for employees looking to take on leadership roles?”
  • How would you describe the kinds of relationships the person in this role would have with their team and leadership?
  • Based on your experience, how would you describe the people at the company in three words?
  • What’s an example of how the company handles high volume/stress work days for their employees?
  • What’s a project you recently worked on that has gotten you the most excited so far?

Rezkalla also suggested asking specific questions about your interests, such as work-life balance, career growth and workplace culture.

“Vague questions will get you vague answers,” Rezkalla said. “Don’t forget to add your flair to the questions, so good luck and get that bag.”

Many TikTokkers praised the career coach for sharing tips on job interviews.

“I used your questions and they were blown away! I don’t know if I’ll get the job but at least I made it memorable,” wrote one job seeker.

“This is actually useful information. About time one of these accounts was decent at interview advice,” commented a watcher.

“I used the first one in my big interview today and they loved it,” revealed a TikTokker.

Meanwhile, some hiring managers joined the conversation with mixed reviews on Rezkalla’s follow-up questions.

“I love when candidates ask me about projects I’m excited about,” commented a hiring manager.

“By the end of the interview, my mind is already made up. None of these questions will change anything,” admitted another.

“To be honest most hiring managers are hoping there are no additional questions,” one person wrote.

Despite the naysayers, Rezkalla reminds her followers to ask good questions — but don’t make it complicated.

Ukraine hits Moscow in major drone attack, Russia says

Ukraine hit Moscow on Wednesday in what Russia described as one of its largest drone attacks in the war, though Russia claimed all of the explosive unmanned vehicles were shot down.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said that overnight into Wednesday, its forces destroyed a total of 45 drones launched into Russia.

Eleven of those drones were taken out by air defenses over the region of Moscow, and three of them around the neighboring province of Kaluga Oblast, according to Russia.

The rest were downed by air defenses in regions that border Ukraine, including Kursk, where Ukraine is pushing forward in a major offensive that began Aug. 6.

Ukraine has targeted Moscow with long-range drones before, and Russia accused Ukraine of being behind an attack on the Kremlin last year that came amid a Ukrainian campaign to damage Russia’s war efforts.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said in a Telegram post that Wednesday’s operation was “one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow with drones ever.”

Ukrainian officials have not publicly commented on the drone attack and have typically refrained from mentioning strikes on Russian territory.

Ukraine’s armed forces said Wednesday that Russia launched a wave of drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian territory that were shot down.

The attack around Moscow comes as Ukraine is advancing into Kursk, taking close to 500 square miles of territory and more than 90 settlements in the Russian region.

Russia is also making its own advances in eastern Ukraine, putting pressure on the towns of Toretsk and Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region.

The fallout after Bolt’s aggressive fundraising attempt has been wild

This past week was a wild one in the world of fintech as Bolt surprised the industry with a leaked term sheet that revealed it is trying to raise $200 million in equity and an unusual, additional $250 million in “marketing credits.” As part of this deal, Bolt wanted a $14 billion valuation bolstered by an aggressive pay-to-play type cramdown that would try and force its existing investors to cough up more cash, too, or essentially lose their stakes to a 1 cent per share buyout. Brad Pamnani, an investor who is spearheading the proposed $200 million equity investment deal, told TechCrunch on Thursday that shareholders have until the end of next week to indicate whether or not they plan to write checks into the new funding round.

3D printed ceramic ink can soak up harmful chemicals and acid from water supplies

University of bath generates 3d printed ceramic ink monolith.

Engineers at the University of Bath have turned to 3D printing to remove the so-called ‘forever chemicals’ from water supplies. Using this technology, they’ve generated ceramic -infused lattices, or ‘monoliths’, that can remove at least 75 percent of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from water, among other substances. These 3D-printed structures are made of ink mixed with ceramic indium oxide, which can bond with the acids in the water. A 3D printer squeezes out this formula and forms a lattice structure, manufacturing the monoliths.

The engineers say that because of the indium oxide and its properties that bond with the acids, chemicals in the water supplies and bodies can immediately stick to these 3D-printed structures, thus being removed from them. The team adds that the operation can be done in under three hours and that this study and method are compatible with current water treatment plants in the UK and abroad. If proven successful, the 3D-printed ceramic ink could help eliminate harmful chemicals in water.

Ceramic ink can remove up to 75 percent of chemicals

After testing, the researchers have discovered that their 3D-printed ceramic ink can remove up to 75 percent of harmful chemicals from water supplies. These monoliths even become more effective at vacuuming these perfluorooctanoic acids the more they are used. This is because the filters go through a high-temperature cleaning process after each use, which seems to improve their performance. The next step for the researchers is to study why the chemical filters work better with each use, so they plan to do more tests to figure it out.

‘Using 3D printing to create the monoliths is relatively simple, and it also means the process should be scalable. Once the monoliths are ready, you simply drop them into the water and let them do their work. It’s very exciting and something we are keen to develop further and see in use,’ says Dr. Liana Zoumpouli, a Research Associate in Bath’s Department of Chemical Engineering and a member of the Centre for Digital Manufacturing and Design.

3D printed monoliths to speed up chemical breakdown

In some places, especially in the US and Europe, there are already rules regarding how much perfluorooctanoic acid can be in drinking water and other supplies. It is one of the most common perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and even if there are already rules in place, the scientists believe that they may not be enough, given how dangerous these chemicals can be to health. They add that stricter laws or regulations are likely to be introduced in the future to better protect people from these health risks.

These substances are known as ‘forever chemicals’ because they take a very long time to break down. In some cases, the process can even take over 1,000 years. These perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances are man-made. They are known to be harmful to reproductive, developmental, and cardiovascular systems as well as increasing the likelihood of diabetes. Some of the sources of these substances include domestic products, often with water-repellent properties, such as non-stick pans, raincoats, paints, fabrics, and firefighting foams.

Mike Lynch death: Tributes flow for Autonomy cofounder and ‘creator of dreams’

Mike Lynch

It has now been confirmed that Mike Lynch, one of the most prominent and controversial figures in the U.K. tech scene, died in the sinking of his superyacht off Sicily on Monday. At least five others also died when the vessel capsized in a violent storm; Lynch’s teenage daughter Hannah remains missing.

I encourage you to read my colleague Ryan Hogg’s obituary of Lynch , who I was writing about just a couple weeks ago in the context of his legal travails. Following a lengthy extradition drama, Lynch, 59, was acquitted in June of criminal fraud charges relating to the sale of his data software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Indeed, his fateful trip with family, friends and lawyers was reportedly a celebration of that victory.

Morgan Stanley International chair Jonathan Bloomer, who had chaired Autonomy’s audit committee during the HP sale, and who testified in Lynch’s defense, also died in the sinking of the Bayesian. In a grotesque coincidence, Lynch’s also-acquitted codefendant in the U.S. trial, former Autonomy finance VP Stephen Chamberlain, was fatally struck by a car while jogging in England on Saturday.

Although he was acquitted in the U.S., a U.K. civil case over Autonomy’s misrepresentation of its financials to HP resulted in a ruling that Lynch had known what was going on. As a result, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (which has been handling the case since it was spun out of HP in 2015) had been hoping to recoup billions of dollars from Lynch and former Autonomy CFO Sushovan Hussain, who received a five-year sentence in the U.S. over the affair.

“We’re saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts are with the families and friends of all those who lost their lives,” said an HPE spokesman, while declining to comment on the future of the legal proceedings.

Friends say Lynch had been at the “beginning of a new life” following his U.S. acquittal, and many tributes followed the confirmation of his passing.

“The world has lost a genius. His family have lost a giant of a man,” said Autonomy cofounder David Tabizel.

“Mike Lynch should be remembered as the person who catalyzed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the U.K.,” said John Browne, the former BP CEO and the chair of the Francis Crick Institute, a biomedical research center for which Lynch once helped to raise funds. “His ideas and his personal vision were a powerful contribution to science and technology in both Britain and globally. I send my condolences to those close to him. We have lost a human being of great ability.”

David Yelland, the former editor of The Sun and Lynch’s public relations advisor, said Lynch was “failed in life by his country and his peers when he needed them most—as he looked for help in the unjust U.S. demand that he be extradited—and he has then suffered the most unfair and brutal of fates.”

“I was in touch with Mike just before he sailed,” Yelland wrote on X . “He wasn’t a mere dreamer of dreams, he was a creator of dreams not just for himself but for all those that knew him, worked with him or invested with him.”

Lynch was a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the board of which said it was “deeply saddened” to hear of his death. A spokesperson from industry body TechUK told the Evening Standard that Lynch had been “a hugely significant and pioneering figure in the U.K. technology sector.”

More news below. And do read my colleague Eleanor Pringle’s piece on X’s true owners , whose identities have just been revealed in the context of a lawsuit by former employees. Bill Ackman is no surprise, but the same can’t be said for Diddy.

Walmart sells JD.com stake. Walmart has sold its entire $3.7 billion stake in the Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com and says it will focus on its own Chinese operations now. Walmart has in recent years been pulling out of a few international markets where it can’t turn a decent profit.

Google targeting teens. Not long after the Financial Times reported that Google broke its own rules by letting Meta target teens with its YouTube ads, Adweek reports that this was no one-off. Citing three ad buyers, plus written documentation, the publication says Google’s salespeople have been advising ad buyers on how to reach teenagers despite the fact that Google doesn’t allow targeting that age group. The key, it seems, is to target the cohort of “unknown” users, about whom Google doesn’t know age or other details, as teens are probably included in the group. Google says it will remind its reps not to help agencies and advertisers skirt the company’s rules.

Ukraine’s incursion into Russia aims to establish a “buffer zone” to prevent cross-border attacks into Sumy in Ukraine by Moscow’s army, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, as Kyiv’s forces blew up a third bridge in the Kursk region to strengthen its positions there.

On Sunday and into Monday, elite Ukrainian military units pressed ahead with their ambitious operation inside Kursk, which began almost two weeks ago . The Financial Times saw heavy weaponry, armoured vehicles and trucks carrying fresh troops streaming into the western Russian region.

Ukraine’s air force chief Mykola Oleshchuk published two videos showing air strikes on two bridges across the river Seym near the towns of Glushkovo and Zvannoe, which analysts said would hinder Russian military logistics and help Ukraine to consolidate its grip on roughly 1,100 sq km of territory.

On Monday morning, Russian military bloggers published photos purporting to show a collapsed third bridge in the town of Karyzh, which they said had been destroyed by Ukrainian forces. A representative from Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed in a video address published by a Russian state television anchor that the bridge had been destroyed. Kyiv did not immediately claim responsibility.

Aerial view of smoke rising from a bridge

In his evening address to the nation on Sunday, Zelenskyy laid out for the first time one of Ukraine’s strategic goals with the operation in Russia’s Kursk region saying “it is now our primary task in defensive operations overall: to destroy as much Russian war potential as possible and conduct maximum counteroffensive actions”.

He added: “This includes creating a buffer zone on the aggressor’s territory — our operation in the Kursk region.”

Before the incursion, Russia had targeted civilian and military infrastructure in the north-eastern Ukrainian region of Sumy with missile, drone and artillery attacks on a near-daily basis.

The border area is also a point from which Russia launched its multipronged offensive against Ukraine in February 2022. Moscow’s army blasted its way through border crossings in Sumy en route to the regional capital of the same name and other cities further west.

“Everything that inflicts losses on the Russian army, Russian state, their military-industrial complex, and their economy helps prevent the war from expanding and brings us closer to a just end to this aggression — a just peace for Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.

yacht dream

Nearly two weeks after Ukrainian troops smashed through the Kursk border, catching troops by surprise, Russia has struggled to respond. The Kremlin has ordered a “counterterrorism operation” in the region led by its federal security service, the FSB, and sent in young, inexperienced conscripts .

But they have so far failed to repel Kyiv’s forces, which captured several more small settlements. The Russian military has also used deadly glide bombs on its own territory to try to disrupt the operation while bungling a hastily organised civilian evacuation from scores of cities and towns through which Ukrainian forces have blazed a path.

Russian units that have arrived in the Kursk region as reinforcements are currently taking a defensive role and holding off further advances by Ukrainian forces, according to Ruslan Leviev, co-founder of the Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT), an independent war monitor conducting open-source investigations of the Russian military.

“We have not seen any attempts by Russian ground units to attack Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region,” he said.

Civilians from Kursk sitting inside a bus

In the meantime, according to Leviev’s observations, Ukrainian forces are primarily reinforcing their flanks as they attempt to advance in both directions along the Russian-Ukrainian border.

The Centre for Defence Strategies, a Kyiv-based security think-tank, said in an assessment overnight that Ukraine’s 103rd Territorial Defense Brigade had captured the village of Vnezapnoye and encircled Russian FSB border troops near Glushkovo.

The CDS said Ukrainian forces had seized control of “Tolpyno and Kolychevka, cutting off the Russian garrison in Korenevo from the main enemy forces”.

They also “captured Aleksandrovka and used it as a hub for deep raids towards Lgov and Rylsk”, deeper into Kursk region.

Zelenskyy said his commander-in-chief of the armed forces, General Oleksandr Syrsky, had briefed him on the evolving situation on the ground and confirmed the capture of more Russian troops who would be added to what the president called an “exchange fund”.

One of Ukraine’s objectives has been to take as many Russian prisoners as it can to be used to negotiate the release of more than 8,000 Ukrainians held captive by Moscow.

In his address, Zelenskyy said his troops “are doing great on all fronts”, and pleaded with the western nations on which Kyiv relies for arms and ammunition for “faster delivery of supplies”.

“There are no vacations in war. Decisions are needed, as are timely logistics for the announced aid packages,” Zelenskyy said. “I especially address this to the United States, the United Kingdom and France.”
