JoySail 2024: Ibiza’s Premier Superyacht Regatta is Back with a Bang

Unleash the Sails: JoySail 2024 Sets Sail from September 19 to 22!

Ibiza, the ultimate playground for thrill-seekers, party enthusiasts, and luxury connoisseurs, is gearing up for an event that will make every yacht lover’s heart race. JoySail 2024, the crown jewel of superyacht regattas in the Mediterranean , is back, and it’s bigger, bolder, and more exciting than ever before. In this article, we dive deep into the heart of JoySail 2024, exploring its evolution, the thrilling new competition format, and the tantalizing records that are waiting to be shattered.

Setting Sail: The JoySail Experience

Picture this: The sun-kissed shores of Ibiza, a gentle sea breeze caressing your skin, and the thrill of the open water. This is the essence of JoySail, an event that has become synonymous with elegance, luxury, and pure sailing adrenaline.

JoySail 2024 will take place from September 19 to 22, transforming Ibiza into a mecca for superyacht enthusiasts. What sets this edition apart? For starters, it extends from three to four glorious days, from Thursday to Sunday. But that’s just the beginning of the adventure.

An Invitation to Excellence

JoySail has always been an invitation-only affair, attracting the crème de la crème of the superyacht world. In 2024, this exclusivity remains intact, ensuring that only the most elite vessels and crews participate.

The heart of JoySail, with its majestic superyachts gliding through azure waters, beats to the rhythm of competition, camaraderie, and sheer joy. It’s a regatta that’s as much about the thrill of the race as it is about celebrating the beauty of these magnificent vessels.

The Evolution Continues

What’s the secret behind JoySail’s enduring allure? It’s the commitment to evolution. Each year, the organizers strive to make the event even more attractive and competitive. In 2023 , it was the debut of the J Class that stole the limelight. In 2024, brace yourself for a new competition format that promises to inject even more excitement into the regatta.

The organizers of JoySail, in collaboration with STP Shipyard Palma and Marina Ibiza, have released the Notice of Regatta. While maintaining its “invitation-only” status, JoySail 2024 introduces a thrilling addition: an extra day of racing in the splendid waters of Ibiza. The event now spans from Thursday to Sunday, September 19 to 22, 2024.

Chasing Records Across the Mediterranean

One of the most thrilling aspects of JoySail is the pursuit of records, and the 2024 edition promises to take this excitement to new heights. Historically, the Palma to Ibiza-Formentera record was contested on the first day of the regatta. The fleet would depart from Palma’s bay, embarking on an exhilarating journey to Ibiza’s bay. Since the 2022 edition, this record has rested with Juan Ball’s Swan 115 Moat, boasting a remarkable time of 7 hours, 5 minutes, and 30 seconds.

But the thrill of the chase knows no bounds. In anticipation of JoySail 2024, the organizers have decided to open the door to even more exhilarating possibilities. Participating boats now have the option to attempt to break this record, with a prize awaiting the victorious.

A 30-day window, from August 21 to September 19, will allow participants to choose their moment strategically based on weather conditions. To qualify for this record-breaking quest, ships must notify the organizers 24 hours before their departure, ensuring they receive tracking assistance and a backstay flag.

The Palma to Ibiza record route spans approximately 48 nautical miles. It begins with an imaginary line at the Punta Cala Figuera lighthouse – 39° 27.449′ N, 002° 31.34′ E and follows a transit heading of 148°T from the lighthouse. The finish line awaits at the Tagomago lighthouse – 39° 1,952′ N, 001° 38,939′ E, with the same transit heading of 148°T.

From September 19 to 22, the waters of Ibiza and Formentera will play host to the thrilling tests of the JoySail regatta. Coastal routes will provide the backdrop for heart-pounding competition and unforgettable moments.

JoySail 2024: Write Your Sailing Legend

J-Class Yachts Added To Line-up For Ibiza JoySail 2023

superyacht regatta ibiza

For a regatta that is just beginning to gear up for only its third incarnation, Ibiza JoySail has very clearly already claimed its place in the international sailing scene. After a modest beginning in 2021 which attracted five superyachts to the late season festival of sail, last year saw the fleet almost triple in size with 13 entries signing up for the Balearic sailing event organised by STP Shipyard Palma and Marina Ibiza.

superyacht regatta ibiza

Expectations for a further step forward in the evolution of Ibiza JoySail – which will this year be held from 28 September to 1 October – have been heightened by the early disclosure that some J Class yachts will be joining the party alongside a strong contingent of returnees from 2022 and some new entries as well.

“It is early days of course, but we have had significant interest from almost all of the boats who participated last year and who want to do it again, which is a great tribute to Ibiza JoySail,” – said Regatta Director Nacho Postigo.

A strong fleet

Among those returning is the defending champion in the Perpetual Trophy and Performance Class, the Swan 115 Moat , no doubt eager to resume her tussle with the SW-RP90 ‘Allsmoke’ or compete with her twin Swan 115 Jasi , that will join the fleet.

Speaking with Moat’s owner Juan Ball about last year after securing a second successive victory, and looking ahead to 2023, he stated:

“ We knew that it was going to be difficult and that every error counts. That’s why we are so happy to have won. But next year we start from zero all over again. ” He also highlighted other appealing aspects of Ibiza JoySail: “ The social aspect is a lot of fun. Ibiza is very suitable for having a good time. I know Marina Ibiza very well and the service is exceptional. In STP they were also very helpful .”

Speaking at the 2022 gathering Moat’s captain Diego Stefani said, somewhat prophetically:

“ If we compare it with the event last year, we already have three times the number of boats. With the higher level of boats and crews I believe this regatta has the potential to become one of the most important regattas in the Mediterranean .”

On the other hand, All Smoke’s captain, Jürgen Feller, explained that:

“ last year we joined the regatta thinking only of competing, however, when we saw the atmosphere there and how much fun it was in the water and also on land, our perception changed and this year we don’t want to miss it. We are happy to compete but we also want to end the season enjoying the regatta, its events and the friends we made there last year .”

The returning competitors Swan 80s ‘Dark Horse’ and ‘ Sapma’ , as well as the YD120 ‘Bliss’ and Frers 155 ‘Hyperion’ have also confirmed participation. Moreover, first-timers such as ‘ Prevail’, a Y Yacht 90 , ‘ Aurelius’, a Dykstra 111 and the SW94 ‘Aragon’ will also join the fleet.

The grace of the j class.

The participation of the J Class has now been made official. It is confirmed that Svea, Topaz and Lionheart will join, with others expected to follow.   This no doubt rises anticipation of the largely Ibiza-based regatta to new heights:

“ We are super-excited to be going to Ibiza JoySail and we are really looking forward to racing against the other Js, ” said Lionheart’s captain Toby Brand. “It’s always great to be racing with them, and the event is the kind where the owner can race with family and friends alongside the core crew. We know Ibiza and Formentera well and we have been there many times in cruising mode, and it has never failed to deliver.” Adding “we consider STP to be part of the Lionheart family. We have been there for years, and they always look after us extremely well, especially the office team there – we are big fans.”

The appeal of Ibiza JoySail was echoed by Topaz’s Project Manager Tim Kröger, who said:

“First of all it is a good chance to race against our J-Class compatriots, and secondly it’s the challenge to participate in a fairly new event in a new area and attractive race waters. As a team we are looking forward to well organized races and a tempting venue promising good sport. We followed last year’s event which looked like a great success. When Topaz is in Mallorca, she is moored at STP and yes, since we know STP well, we believe that the available expertise helps.”

It is clear that the presence of the J Yachts represents an unambiguous nod of approval from one of the highest profile superyacht sailing groups and follows a visit to the 2022 event by their new class secretary Stuart Childerley. The world champion sailor and international race officer was clearly impressed by the excellent facilities and widespread expertise on offer at both STP Palma and Marina Ibiza.

“ It was the passion of the management team – explains Childerley, – they clearly showed, one, they have got a very competent team and, two, they are extremely passionate about the event, which is great. They also have the right people that would make the most out of the venue in terms of sailing conditions.”

The Mallorca-Ibiza Perpetual Trophy

With all to play for – and the new players no doubt out to make their mark at Ibiza JoySail – racers can look forward to Thursday 28 September and the start of the Mallorca to Ibiza Race, the 48 Nm challenge between the islands that kicks the regatta off in style. It is also the first opportunity to win some silverware, with the Mallorca-Ibiza Perpetual Trophy on offer to the yachts setting the elapsed time record between the lighthouses at Punta Cala Figuera on Mallorca and Tagomago Island off Ibiza. In last year’s edition, Swan 115 Moat was the champion in the Perpetual Trophy and this year will try to defend it.

Racing with new technologies

superyacht regatta ibiza

Keen not to rest on their laurels, Ibiza JoySail organisers have introduced an interesting change to the format of the opening race. Nacho Postigo explains:

“I always say the regatta is called Ibiza JoySail for a reason, it is not about having a hard time, so we will be using a new technology for the long race between Mallorca and Ibiza. We will use robotic racing marks for that, so if the conditions in the Bay of Palma are too light to start – and it was marginal for a time last year – the race committee will hoist the ‘follow me’ flag and start motoring towards Ibiza. If the wind gets up in the channel, as it did in 2022, then we will set a start line with the robotic marks and go racing. The race committee could also shorten the course in the same way. The important thing is that the owners and crews have a good time, and it is not a struggle.” c oncludes the event Director.

Ibiza Joysail has become a benchmark to be considered in the international regatta calendar since, due to its open and family&friends format, and being held at the end of summer, it is an attractive experience for closing the season and many regatta regulars no longer want to miss it.

superyacht regatta ibiza

The largest yachts racing at Ibiza JoySail 2023

Ibiza JoySail may be one of the newer regattas on the Mediterranean racing circuit, but the event has proven to be a firm favourite as organisers set to welcome its biggest lineup to date.

Scorpione of London

Length : 46.2m Builder : Baltic Yachts

Scorpione of London is a custom sailing yacht built for a seasoned owner and is the former flagship of Baltic Yachts – a title she held for over a decade. She was delivered as Pink Gin in 2006 and won the New Zealand Millennium Cup and Superyacht Cup Palma in her debut season. Sailing credentials include a large rudder with direct cable steering, lifting keel and she flies 1,891 square metres of sail downwind.

Length : 43.6m Builder : Vitters

Fresh off of a win at the Maxi Rolex Cup, the largest (and newest) member of the J Class fleet will be heading to Ibiza for her first Ibiza JoySail regatta. Svea 's original lines were designed by Tore Holm in 1973 and Hoek Design Naval Architects was called on to revive the 75-year-old drawings and bring her up to date, complete with a 53.75-metre carbon fibre main mast. As a result, Svea displaces just 182 tonnes — two tonnes less than her fellow J Hanuman and six tonnes less than Ranger . She'll be competing against fellow J Topaz .

Length : 42.6m Builder : Holland Jachtbouw

Topaz is the smaller of the two Js competing this year. The Holland Jachtbouw sailing yacht is based on an unbuilt 1938 design and was revisited by Andre Hoek . Topaz ’s hull design features a reduced wetted surface and higher keel aspect ratio to her 27-metre waterline length, making her quick. She was the longest J by waterline length at the time of her launch but was later dethroned by Svea .

Length : 35.2m Builder : Nautor Swan

This year's event will mean three in a row for Swan 115 Moat and after two back-to-back wins, she'll be shooting for the hat trick. Moat was born into a racing dynasty as the fifteenth Highland Fling. A long bowsprit offers improved downwind performance, as does a retractable propeller. She is the product of a longstanding partnership between Nautor Swan and German Frers.

Length : 35.1m Builder : Nautor Swan

One of only two Swan 115 models, Nautor Swan specifically tailored the 2018 delivery JASI (formerly Odin ) with racing in mind. The hull shape, flush deck, sailing systems, mast and keel were all designed by the yard to provide a competitive edge in world-class regattas such as the Bucket. The 35-metre sailing yacht features the design talents of German Frers with added Code Zero cableless technology making sails lighter and easier to handle.

Length : 33.9m Builder : Jacht Ontwikkelings Maatschappij

This Dykstra-designed modern classic has an interesting backstory as she was not the product of a renowned shipyard, like many of this year's competitors, but rather the work of the owner himself and his business partner who set up their own shipyard to build his vision. Now under new ownership, Aurelius will be making her Ibiza JoySail debut.

Kiboko Tres

Length : 32.3m   Builder : Southern Wind

Kiboko Tres – meaning hippopotamus in Swahili – is the second in Southern Wind's SW105 series and was delivered in 2018 for a repeat client of the South African shipyard. She was optimised with the Mediterranean superyacht circuit in mind with a larger sailplan, three tonnes more lead in the fixed keel and twin rudders. Weight saving was crucial and the owner even opted for a manual pasarelle, saving 60kg.

L'Hippocampe

Length : 30.2m Builder : Nautor Swan

L'Hippocampe is a modified Swan 100S and was the last in the series to leave the shipyard. She used to race as Varsovie but was renamed following a change in ownership at the end of 2022. Before then she has competed on both sides of the Atlantic, completing the crossings on her own bottom.

Alarife Cien

Length : 30.2m Builder : Barcos Deportivos

Alarife Cien is the only Spanish-born sailing yacht and will be racing in home waters at this year's regatta. She was a one-off custom sloop built in Tarragona to a design by German Frers and is one of the more well-travelled competitors, having sailed across the Pacific to New Zealand and rounded Cape Horn in her lifetime.

Length : 28.7m Builder : Southern Wind

The 28.6-metre Southern Wind sloop made her debut on the Mediterranean racing scene as Windfall not long after her delivery in 2013. Commissioned by an owner looking to compete at the major regattas, she was the second of three SW94 models designed by Reichel-Pugh Yacht Design and boasts a carbon mast, rigging and boom. Built in advanced composite sandwich materials means she is light, fast and fearsome on the race circuit with her 463-square-metre sail plan she has clinched multiple regatta wins including the Maxi Rolex Cup.

Length : 27.5m Builder : Southern Wind

Allsmoke and her crew will be going for gold this year after achieving second place at the Ibiza JoySail regatta in 2022. The custom Southern Wind sailing yacht features a single rudder, detachable bowsprit, lifting keel (that retracts from 5.8- to 3.8-metres) and a generous 469 square metre sail plan. She weighs only 46.5 tonnes.

Length : 27.4m Builder : YYachts

Prevail is the former flagship of YYachts. Prevail uses carbon for the hull, superstructure, mast, boom and sails, while the rig includes a self-tacking jib and hydraulically operated boom-rolled mainsail. Tripp says the hull shape is optimised to sail at 12 degrees, while the yacht also features a lifting keel, a challenging feature to integrate and disguise in the interior design.

Length : 25.1m Builder : Nautor Swan

Dark Horse is another regular at this regatta and after consistently finishing in third place last year. She didn't sail away empty-handed though as she won the Corinthian prize for non-professional skippers. Racing credentials include a carbon hull, carbon deck, high-modulus carbon spars and high-tech standard rigging. And while she might be one of the smallest competitors she could well be a dark horse in his year's lineup.

Highland Fling XVIII

Length : 24.7m Builder : Gunboat This 24.7-metre Gunboat is the newest addition to the Highland Fling racing dynasty and the second with two hulls. The racing-red Gunboat flagship made her racing debut at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup with a respectable two wins out of four faces. Optimised for racing, she is built in an ultra-lightweight prepreg carbon fibre structure and honeycomb Nomex core with the mast positioned further aft for an improved sail plan. The semi-custom yacht is capable of exceeding true wind speed at just six knots and is expected to be one of the fastest cruising catamarans of its size.

Noroton Yacht Club Claims Victory at 2024 New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Regatta

' src=

In a stunning comeback, Noroton Yacht Club from Darien, Conn., reclaimed its title as champions at the 2024 New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Regatta. The club, which had been a dominant force since the regatta’s inception in 2010, saw its six-year winning streak end in 2016 and had struggled to regain its former glory. However, with a commanding 4-1 record on the final day of racing, Noroton surged past Day 2 leader Texas Corinthian Yacht Club to clinch the win. Newport Harbor Yacht Club finished third, while Southern Yacht Club secured fourth place.

“We are thrilled to have won the New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race,” said Michael Rudnick, Noroton Yacht Club Team Captain. “We take it one race at a time. We checked the scores just before the last race to see where things stood, and it was a great feeling when we realized we had it.”

The New York Yacht Club has been a pioneer in adult team racing since the early 2000s, with the creation of several regattas, including the Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy in 2000, the Morgan Cup in 2003, and the Grandmasters Team Race Regatta in 2010. The Grandmasters event requires skippers to be at least 60 years old and crew members to be over 50, ensuring a unique competition that draws top adult team racers from the United States and Europe. All three regattas are held over consecutive weekends in August at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court, using the Club’s fleet of 22 Sonar keelboats. This year’s regatta was sponsored by Helly Hansen, Peters & May, Hammetts Hotel, and Safe Harbor Marinas.

One of the key distinctions between team racing and fleet racing is the strategic focus on competitors behind you. In team racing, the objective is to outmaneuver and control opponents early, often right after the start. “Everybody wants to chase,” explained Noroton skipper Tom Kinney. “Coach Karl [Ziegler] always says there’s a play, and it’s always behind you. In fleet racing, this mindset doesn’t work. But in team racing, it’s crucial.”

The strength of Noroton’s program lies in consistent practice. “We try to race every Thursday night from April until late August,” Rudnick shared. “It’s a great opportunity for sailors of all ages to mix it up and hone their skills. We don’t keep score; it’s all about training and getting everyone involved.”

Noroton’s familiarity with light-air conditions also played a significant role in their victory. The regatta was characterized by breezes rarely exceeding 12 knots, conditions that suited Noroton’s expertise. “We’re good in light air,” Rudnick said. “Western Long Island Sound is typically a light-air venue, so we knew the boat and conditions well. We practice with kites regularly, so the more kites, the better for us.”

As the dust settles on another successful regatta, questions arise about whether this victory marks the beginning of a new winning streak for Noroton. Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, winners in 2021 and 2022, will be eager for redemption next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the fleet continues to close the gap on the top teams, promising even more thrilling competition in the future.

However, the camaraderie and sportsmanship of the Grandmasters event are what truly set it apart. “The New York Yacht Club does an amazing job,” said Rudnick. “The atmosphere is always fantastic. Last night in the tent was a perfect example. We really enjoy coming here every time.”

Luxury yacht Ferretti 530 was very keen to undertake in collaboration once again with AYT – Advanced Yacht Technology, Ferretti Group Engineering Division and Studio Zuccon International Project . The compact dimensions, 16 meters long and almost 5 meters wide, allow the 530 yacht to deliver grand Italian luxury and cruising immersed in such comfort until now unheard of in a yacht of this size.

Ferretti 530 yacht boasts three revolutionary innovations: the full beam master cabin with chaise longue and two large open view windows that make it a real suite at sea level bathed in light, tones and the natural essences of teak. Moving the galley from the center to the aft section creates a unique open space that includes the saloon, galley, cocktail bar and the dining area, the cockpit area continues thanks to the tilting window. The roll bar free sky lounge and the spoiler allow the 530 a sporty appearance combined with elegantly formal lines.

Riva , the iconic Ferretti Group brand, presented a new model at the historical Lake d’Iseo shipyards in July 2011. Featuring elegance and ease of transportation as its distinctive characteristics, Iseo superyacht tender , a 27 foot runabout, is destined to become a must-have for those who love cruising on both lakes and the sea, and, most importantly, design enthusiasts. It is also perfect for anyone wishing to enhance their yacht with an exclusive tender that will never go unnoticed.

Due to its ease of manoeuvrability and size, Iseo yacht tender is also ideal as a tender for large yachts. Innovative and elegant, it can also guarantee comfort in bad weather conditions. Besides the electrohydraulic bimini top, it was also designed with a waterproof, automobile-style soft top which protects those on board against water and the wind during cruising.

Team new zealand win america's cup warmup regatta.

Team New Zealand won the America's Cup preliminary regatta off Barcelona overcoming their closest race of the series to clinch the title.

The day started with the New Zealanders suffering their first loss of the regatta, going down to American Magic, but the defenders had already sealed their place in the final.

The final against Luna Rossa turned out to be the race of the regatta with the top two qualifiers involved in an epic match race in lighter conditions.

Team New Zealand won the start and the Italians were then handed a penalty for a close encounter.

Peter Burling's boat was ahead by 22 seconds at the first windward mark but that closed to 16 seconds at the second.

The racing stayed close and despite Luna Rossa being handed another penalty for being too close, they were only 11 seconds behind at the final mark.

Team New Zealand then covered their opponents on the final run and found an area of high pressure to score a 34-second win.

Skipper of Emirates Team New Zealand Peter Burling was understandably delighted with the win but said it was tense.

"I think just incredibly challenging to sail in those conditions, we had a fair few issues we were managing on the boat, but we lucked out in the pre-start and got a penalty on them.

"I was amazed the second penalty got turned off when it did with them still ahead of us - but then to stick to our guns and make a pass from there was really pleasing."

Burling knew they would be in for a battle.

"We were expecting it to be tight and we were struggling to get the shifts right, but it's going to be a close regatta. It's all about making sure you get the phases right and sail the boat in the right places. I think we were a little frustrated with how we sailed today but plenty to go back and have a look at afterwards.

"It definitely wasn't our prettiest work, we made it pretty hard for ourselves but absolutely stoked to walk away with that the one because if you can make that many mistakes and still win a yacht race. It's been a bit of a tough day for us to be honest with that first race against American Magic but really happy to take the win."

The challenger series starts on 29 August with Team New Zealand involved in the round robin part of it.

superyacht regatta ibiza

First entries interested in the Ibiza JoySail Regatta points towards an extraordinary second edition, between September 22nd to 25th.

' src=

After the success of the 2021 regatta maiden edition, Ibiza JoySail has already an attractive list of boats that have shown their interest in participating in the second edition.

Moat (Swan 115), Bliss (YD120) and Dark Horse (Swan 80), pioneers of the first edition, have not hesitated to confirm they will be returning to challenge themselves in the waters between Majorca and Ibiza.

Registration for this special superyacht regatta, that will take place between the 22 and 25 of September 2022, is now open.

superyacht regatta ibiza

Ibiza JoySail has made an electrifying initial impact on the international superyacht racing circuit. Its novel format that combines a short offshore regatta between Majorca and Ibiza and coastal courses under 30 miles around the waters of Ibiza and Formentera, in conjunction with a vibrant social agenda on land, has captured the attention of numerous superyachts interested in participating in the next edition which will take place between September 22 nd and 25 th .

Moat (Swan 115), crowned winner in the inaugural edition and skippered by Nicolás González, great ambassador for the regatta, will defend her champion title and will fight to set the record in the offshore race between Majorca and Ibiza that will take place in the opening day. Her owner, Juan Ball, used the Ibiza JoySail event to test his brand new yacht (former Highland Fling 15) with 37 crew members on board, having previously undergone a refit at the boatyard facilities in Badalona. The waters of Ibiza and Formentera were the perfect set to test out the full potential of this Swan, designed by German Frers and built using carbon fibre: a thoroughbred competition machine that will put up a strong fight against any boat that dares to challenge her.

The majestic YD 120 Bliss, runner-up in the first edition didn’t delay her confirmation and once again she will be taking part of the Ibiza JoySail to compete in what was a thrillingly close fight against Moat last year. Both her owner, Andrew Downe, and her skipper, Sebastian Aberg, put together a great team that fully enjoyed the organisation and social agenda of the regatta ashore and the great sailing conditions in the waters of the Pitiusas.

The winner in the Corinthian category of the first edition was the Swan 80 Dark Horse, which, encouraged by the appealing Ibiza JoySail format, joined the fleet and enjoyed their days both on and off the water, meaning that they too have had no hesitation in confirming their interest in participating again in next September.

The great vibe felt during the first edition of this brand new regatta and the eagerness to share the experience with family and friends in the next edition have set Ibiza JoySail into the international calendar and has attracted new teams interested in participating. Twins like Be Cool (Swan 98), launched in 2020 and Alix (Swan 98) just launched in late 2021, have spotted this regatta as the perfect opportunity to close a great summer season in the stunning waters of Ibiza and Formentera participating in an event that brings together the best of sailing and social life ashore in the magical shores of Ibiza.

Others who have been quick to sign up to the provisional Ibiza JoySail entry list are Peregrin, a Y8 Brenta built by Michael Schmidt with already a pedigree of victories in other regattas, Turconeri (Baltic 78), Shangri-la (Oyster 72) and Havana of London, a Vitters 100 who will all be enjoying the competition and social side of the event.

And so it appears that Ibiza JoySail, in her second year of life is set to be an exciting event, perfect for closing a great summer season.

In just two editions, Ibiza JoySail has become one of the leading superyacht races in the Med. Its third edition will be held from 27 to 30 September 2023, coinciding with the end of the summer season, with STP Shipyard Palma as the starting point and Marina Ibiza as the host port.

The third Ibiza JoySail has aroused huge amounts of interest among superyachts. As a result, the Organising Committee has decided to make it an invitational event due to the sheer number of applications eager to take part. As from this year, the maximum number of competing yachts will be twenty, making the race truly exclusive and highly desirable.

Another novelty this year is that the event will start on Wednesday 27 September, with the now traditional offshore race between the islands of Mallorca and Ibiza (where S/Y Moat set the overall record in 2022) and will end on Saturday 30 September with various racing courses between Ibiza and Formentera. Unlike the previous two editions, it will finish on Saturday instead of Sunday, meaning that owners will have one more day to enjoy the island before leaving.

superyacht regatta ibiza

The exclusivity of Ibiza JoySail, and the fact that it takes place at one of the Med’s most desirable marinas, has attracted a whole host of yachts from 24 metres like a Swan 80, a Wally 80, to some 100 feet Southern Wind and 50 metre boats like a Royal Huisman 165.

Since the outset, Swans have been racing in the event, with repeating participants like the Swan 115 S/Y Moat defending her overall winner title from the past two years.

The spectacular Moat, owned by Juan Ball, has been and continues to be one of the best ambassadors for Ibiza JoySail. Ball debuted with her in Ibiza and didn’t want to miss a single edition, so this year he’s racing as the current overall winner titleholder and the current recordholder of the first ever Palma-Ibiza race, which is the opening event of each year’s regatta.

In addition to Moat, repeating participants this year include Hyperion (Frers 155), Bliss (YD 120), All Smoke (SW-RP90) and Sapma (Swan 80). One debuting team will be Prevail (Tripp 90), whose captain Paul Middelberg is very excited about coming to Ibiza, saying that “ever since the launch of JoySail, we’ve been keen to take part in the event. We know several boats and crews who speak wonders of the event, calling it one of the best races around”. Prevail is one of the yachts that after completing the season in Europe will be heading over to the Caribbean. “This will be her first ever race, so we’re looking forward to the heat and breeze to get accustomed to the superyacht circuit. Ibiza JoySail serves as a warm-up before the boat sails over to the Caribbean to compete in the St. Barth’s Bucket. After the event, we’ll cruise a little bit more before preparing the trip across the Atlantic”, explains Middelberg.

Other yachts that have confirmed their entries are Borkumriff (Royal Huisman 165), L’Hippocampe (Swan 100), Jasi (Swan 115), Aurelius (Dysktra 111), Aragon (SW94), Y-Not (Y8 80), and Tilakkhana (Wally 80).

The J Class are coming

No other class is as exclusive as the J Class, which are exact replicas of old America’s Cup boats. The inclusion of the J Class definitely adds some spice to Ibiza JoySail, which at the time being will see Topaz and Svea out on the racecourse. This will be the first time that majestic J Class yachts will be sailing in Ibiza waters, having chosen Ibiza JoySail as the perfect place for their premiere.

Family & Friends

Even though Ibiza JoySail is a fiercely competitive regatta, it’s also a family event and an opportunity for crews to enjoy all the attractions of Ibiza. That’s why Ibiza JoySail has created the Family & Friends community, where both participants and companions can soak up the atmosphere and spend the event in the best way possible, either at sea or on land.

Marina Ibiza boasts an array of dining and leisure options, as well as luxury and exclusive boutiques showcasing designer fashion and accessories. What’s more, the themed parties held every night are another of the event’s top attractions.

In short, Ibiza JoySail is the perfect event for these superyachts to close the season, before some cross the Atlantic for the Caribbean racing season and others stay in Europe wintering at facilities such as STP Shipyard Palma (promoter and co-organiser of Ibiza JoySail together with Marina Ibiza) for refit & repair works.
