From boat-mad boy to superyacht captain: the journey of northland's aaron clark.

It was quite a homecoming for the "boat-mad" boy who grew up sailing Optimists and left school aged 15 to become a commercial fisherman.

When Aaron Clark arrived in the Northland port of Ōpua just before Christmas, it was as the captain of one of the world's most exclusive superyachts .

Built in 2020 with a price tag believed to be well north of US$150 million (NZ$240m), the 80-metre Artefact was named motor yacht of the year in the 2021 World Superyacht Awards.

The ship set new records for internal volume and the sheer amount of glass used in a vessel of its size.

The hybrid diesel-electric motor yacht was also the first to be built with a so-called DC-bus power system, making its significantly more efficient than traditionally powered vessels.

And for Clark, it is also home as he sails the globe for up to nine months of the year.

There are just two things the ebullient Captain Clark won't discuss: one is how much the boat cost, the other is its owner.

The US$150m estimate comes from industry experts, but it's based on the price of an 80-metre production vessel.

Artefact is a one-of-a-kind, custom-built boat so the actual cost is likely to be much higher.

And while Clark won't discuss the owner - other than to say he's an "exceptional person to work for" who has contributed much to society - it is Canadian tech entrepreneur Mike Lazaridis, as previously reported by RNZ.

Lazaridis is best known for creating the BlackBerry mobile device but these days he specialises in quantum computing.

The 62-year-old was described as the father of the smartphone when he was nominated as a Fellow of the Royal Society, Britain's prestigious national sciences academy, in 2014.

Lazaridis was born in Turkey to Greek parents, who moved to Canada when he was a child.

There he quickly excelled in science, even winning an award as a 12-year-old for reading every scientific book in his hometown's library.

While Clark won't talk about his boss, he is more than happy to discuss Artefact's extraordinary specifications.

The ship is designed for 12 passengers and 22 crew, with a beam of 15.6m and a draft of 4.2m.

It has a gross tonnage (a measure of volume) of 2999 and a range of about 6000 nautical miles or 11,000km.

Its four generators - two each of 2.2MW and 550kW - and a 610kWh battery bank provide power to two 27-tonne pod-mounted drive units, as well as a bow thruster for manoeuvring in tight spaces and a host of on-board systems including a 60-tonne-a-day desalinator.

A solar panel array provides enough power for lighting.

Like a hybrid car, Clark says Artefact can run entirely on its battery for limited distances, but what makes it stand out technically is its DC-bus power system.

"That means the engine will deliver only the required amount of power at any given time and we buffer that with a battery. So we can run it in full battery mode with no internal combustion engines, or we use it for more efficient use of the generator," he says.

From the outside Artefact's most distinctive feature is its foam-cored fibreglass superstructure, chosen for its light weight and because it allowed the designers to create curving, organic shapes.

The vessel's 223 pieces of glass are up to 93mm thick, weigh 75 tonnes and cover an area of 760 square metres.

"When we built this boat, the largest superyacht in the world was about four times bigger by volume but Artefact had 30 percent more glass. That gives you an idea of how much glass it's got."

The interior boasts a dedicated tai chi room, a craft room, a cinema, and separate gyms for the owners and staff.

It's a long way from Clark's humble start in boating.

The 52-year-old grew up in Beachlands, then a coastal village southeast of Auckland, where his father was a commercial fisherman.

"And because it was a little coastal town, I was totally boat mad. I sailed Optimists and P-class boats, I'd draw boats, I built papier-mâché models. Boats, boats, boats. I worked fishing with my dad and whenever I could get a good school holiday break, I'd work at the local boatbuilding yard. And eventually when I went to leave school, at the age of 15, I got a boatbuilding apprenticeship."

However, Clark soon discovered the job wasn't for him.

Instead, he took up commercial fishing - first with his father and later from the Far North ports of Mangōnui and Houhora - before landing work in Auckland with a sail excursion business and driving high-speed ferries.

He then built a boat at Austral Yachts in Whangārei, eventually taking it to the Mediterranean as a charter vessel.

There he met an American family who asked him to design and built a 45-metre boat. Clark worked for them for the next 14 years.

"We did a lot of mileage and really did well with it. It was a very successful charter boat."

One of those charter guests was so impressed he asked Clark if he would build him an out-of-the-ordinary boat.

Clark accepted the challenge and was put in charge of every aspect of technical design.

His advice to his new boss was to build it well, with technology that could be replaced and updated, so it would last a good 30 years.

"My advice was to future-proof the boat and build it bigger than you think you want it, so in the future, you don't grow out of it and need to build a larger boat. Take your time to do it. Make it your first boat and your last boat, so you never have to change."

Clark says 80,000 man-hours went into the design process before the builders cut a single piece of metal.

He had life-size interior mock-ups built, carried out tank tests, and caught 82 flights in a year visiting manufacturers around the world.

The boat was built at the famed German shipyard Nobiskrug.

"They're a shipyard that truly does one-off boats. They build some spectacular yachts that other people probably wouldn't even try to build because it'd be outside their business model. Also, this was the first boat of its type in the industry, with a DC-bus power system, so we needed to go to a company that could manage the electrical contracting companies really well."

In total 1000 people were involved in building the vessel over a two-and-a-half-year period. He estimates 72,000 people came into contact with money from the project.

Clark says he wanted to bring Artefact to Ōpua because it's "the boatie base of Northland".

The spot where he berthed the ship also happens to be exactly 203 metres - he knows, because he measured it - from the driveway of his home.

"I wanted to bring it here because of the history, I had some time in the schedule, and there's a whole lot of people from New Zealand that have supplied stuff to the boat. So it'll give a lot of people inspiration to see the work that they've done. After the last few difficult years for everyone, we want to show people we're moving again, and create some excitement. I also just want to share it with my neighbours and some friends, and with business people in the community."

New Zealand-built equipment on Artefact includes a Sealegs amphibious boat and a guest tender, which doubles as a game fishing boat, built by Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders in Auckland.

The stern anchor system was designed and built by Manson Anchor in Auckland, and the 48 fishing rods and other fishing gear were supplied by Kiwi firm Burnsco.

Artefact sailed to Picton after a 10-day stay at Ōpua and will next head to Auckland for servicing and maintenance.

The vessel will spend the rest of the summer cruising around Northland.

Clark has no doubt his New Zealand upbringing aided his journey from boat-mad boy to superyacht captain.

"I'd say the New Zealand attributes that have helped are the love of adventure, the isolation, the ability to be independent and fix your own stuff. Those are definitely things from New Zealand that I've taken overseas which have probably given me a bit of an edge. I think Kiwis generally have a pretty good attitude about how to go about things, and do it in a kind of low-key way."

A personal attribute he believes has helped is "the ability to see a shoreline not as a border, but as something to explore".

As for Clark's message to boat-mad young Kiwis hoping to follow in his wake: "Just get more boat-mad. Don't limit yourself or your imagination. Think about it, plan it out, go do it. Make some mistakes but just keep on doing it until you get it right. And have a lot of fun."

World's largest aluminium yacht, Sea Eagle, in Ōpua

Sandy Myhre

You can see the three carbon masts from just about anywhere in Ōpua, especially at night when they are all lit up. It's been said that at nearly 70 metres they are tall enough to just scrape through the tall Bridge of the Americas on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal.

The masts belong on Sea Eagle II, the world's largest aluminium yacht that is sitting alongside Ōpua Wharf. She is on her maiden voyage and is at the wharf for the duration of crew quarantine, before going to Whangārei.

She is registered in Georgetown, Guyana, and reportedly belongs to Taiwanese billionaire businessman and philanthropist Samuel Yen-Liang Yin. He is chairman of Taiwan's Ruentex Group and has stakes in Sun Art Retail Group, a leading hypermarket operator in China.

It's a long way up. Sea Eagle II's near 70-metre masts. She dwarfs the Ōpua Wharf. Photo / Far North Holdings Limited

Sea Eagle II is by any measure head-turning. She is 81 metres long, with a width of just 12.4 metres (to aid sailing ability). She has a sweeping 3500sq m of sail. The sail area is controlled by 34 winches from a sailing system integrator.

She was designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and built by Dutch company Royal Huisman, who reportedly described her as the most sophisticated yacht they'd built in their 137-year history. There is a Sea Eagle I, built for the same owner, but this vessel eclipses the first one in length by 36.5m.

The interior has Alpiwalnut wall panels, wenge timber trim and natural oak floors - and according to one report, the owner's collection of modern art "adds splashes of colour". There are handrails across the cabin, wrapped in leather as a design motif, and because the space is used to host business meetings there is copious seating. There's a 16-place dining table for formal occasions.

She can accommodate up to 12 guests in six spacious cabins including the owner's VIP suite. There is a half-raised bridge for inside steering. The flybridge offers full controls during sailing and the area has seating for guests plus, as you'd expect, room for "sunbathing opportunities".

She has two skippers and both call Russell home when their peripatetic lifestyle allows. Max Cumming is a well-seasoned superyacht skipper who spends his time circumnavigating the globe. He wrote the book, Senses, about his time onboard the superyacht of the same name owned at the time by Sir Douglas Myers and his wife Barbara.

The other skipper is Tod Thompson, who had a big hand in Sea Eagle's design. He's the owner's representative on board as well as the skipper.

Paying homage to Tod Thompson, Sea Eagle II meets R. Tucker Thompson in the channel heading towards Ōpua Wharf. Photo / Far North Holdings Limited

As she sailed towards Ōpua, Sea Eagle II was met by the traditional schooner, R. Tucker Thompson, which was built by Tod's father and eponymously named. After Tucker's death the ship was completed by Tod and Russell Harris, who owned her in a partnership with Greta Simmonds.

Paying homage to Tod by sailing together down the channel towards Ōpua Wharf, Sea Eagle II made the R. Tucker Thompson look like a gaff-rigged dinghy, which she most certainly is not. It's just that Sea Eagle II is so much more of just about everything.

The Best Superyacht Marinas In New Zealand For Yacht Crew

superyacht in opua

The island nation of New Zealand – also known by the Maori name Aotearoa – is a major yachting destination in the South Pacific. Read on to discover the best superyacht marinas in New Zealand and what they have on offer for captains and crew…

Cruising grounds feature scenic Sounds, hidden coves and majestic fjords, while the shores are enriched with indigenous cultural sites, volcanic landscapes and a renowned winemaking industry. The country has also become a refit destination for superyachts departing the tropics and looking for a safe haven during cyclone season. Here is our list of the best superyacht marinas in New Zealand for visiting crew.

Bay of Islands Marina, Opua

Of the four marinas covered in this report, the Bay of Islands received the most superyachts in the past year. Visitors included 35 metre Life of Riley , 33.53 metre Intrinsic and 30 metre Mahalo , but the marina has a capacity for yachts as large as 120 metres.

Bay of Islands is located in Opua, to the far north of New Zealand, and is a common point of entry for foreign-flagged vessels. “Bay of Islands is a beautiful part of the world” describes the captain of 36.88 metre motor yacht Dardanella , which has cruised extensively around the South Pacific. The region is characterised by azure waters and 144 pristine islands, with its cruising grounds playing the designated host of the thrilling New Zealand Millennium Cup regatta held every spring.

Yacht Services

Refitting services are available at the Opua Marine Hub, offering 50 specialist businesses on-site together with a couple of well-reputed chandleries. Duthie Lidgard of Catalano Shipping Services notes that there is “plenty” of crew accommodation in the area, ranging from motels and hotels to rental houses. Other amenities alongside the 400 berths include three-phase power, water and pump-out facilities, and waste collection, with security-controlled access to the marina.

Crew Activities & Hotspots

Opua is quaint, so the main hangouts for crew in the town are the Opua Cruising club and Marina Café. Dardanella’s captain advises exploring further afield on days off, visiting places like the “old, traditional town of Russell” with a meal at the historical Duke of Marlborough pub. Another popular crew hangout in the Bay of Islands is Charlotte’s Kitchen in Phalia.

Nature and outdoor activities are the main attractions for crew during downtime in the Bay of Islands. Lidgard recommends exploring the “walks, bike tracks, and waterfalls” of the surrounding islands. The New Zealand tourist board has reported sightings of marine wildlife including dolphins and whales, making it a good place for snorkelling, plus culture vultures will have an opportunity to learn about Maori history at the local treaty grounds.

Port Nikau, Whangārei

Whangārei is another yachting hotspot on the north island with a strong tradition of boat building and shipping. Port Nikau Wharf opened in the area recently and is still undergoing works for further expansion. Nonetheless, it has already hosted sizeable superyachts including 81 metre Sea Eagle II , 60 metre Odyssey , 54 metre Latitude and 45 metre Imagine . Karma Butler of local superyacht agents UrbanSea says that “ Crew love it here as the city centre is five minutes up the road and there is a very laid back feel, with beaches and forests so close.”

superyacht in opua

Superyachts up to 90 metres can be hosted at Port Nikau, with b erthage supported by a marine fuel stop, a boat ramp, power and water.  The marina also boasts over 5,000 square metres of wharf space for refits and servicing. By 2023, Port Nikau will offer three piers dedicating to hosting 120 recreation vessels in total, serviced by a new 560 tonne travel lift, making it one of the best marinas for superyachts to visit in New Zealand.

Port Nikau is also the headquarters of UrbanSea , which will be able to assist crew with airport pickups, accommodation arrangements, provisioning and more. Their most popular serviced crew houses include cottages on 30 First Avenue and 36 Mill Road.

For days off or evenings out, “the loop” – a 4km walkway around the town basin – has numerous restaurants and cafes, as well as galleries like the the Hundertwasser Art Centre, on offer. The UrbanSea team recommend the waterside eateries of The Quay Kitchen, Going Loco, The Butter Factory, Kafé, No.8 Whangarei and Split as the top places for crew to hang out.

For taking time off the vessel, the region has tropical beaches, world-class golf courses and lush forest for nature lovers to enjoy. Sporty crew can organise a trip of paint-balling or mountain biking with local company Heads Up Adventures, or for a more relaxed weekend away, UrbanSea suggest overnighting at the “Eco-Glamping” Marua Retreat in rural Northland, which happens to be owned by a former captain. Venturing further afield, crew can explore the impressive dive sites of the Poor Knights Islands – followed by a stop at nearby Schnappa Rock restaurant.

Orams marine .

Located in the Wynyard Quarter of Auckland, Orams Marine serves as the gateway to the Hauraki Gulf cruising grounds. Regatta-winning vessels like Janice of Wyoming, Ravenger and Miss Silver have all berthed at this marina, which can accommodate superyachts up to 90 metres LOA.

Viaduct Harbour Makes Orams Marine a great Superyacht Marina in New Zealand for crew

The marina provides services like customs clearance, provisioning and logistics. Following a recent renovation, extensive refit facilities on site now include 60 metre boat sheds, a 600 tonne slipway and an 820 tonne travel lift – which is now the largest in the southern hemisphere.

At Orams Marine, the city is right on your doorstep. The captain of Dardanella cites the nearby Viaduct Harbour and Ponsonby areas as popular with crew. His favourite hangouts include roof-top bar Carousel and craft beer bar Hoppers , while Orams Marine recommends that crew sample some of the 60 rums on offer at the aptly named Captain’s Bar in the Park Hyatt hotel. On a sunny morning, crew can walk 20 minutes from the marina to the Buoy café on Westhaven Promenade, popular with both locals and yachties. Dardanella’s captain notes that AirBnB’s organised privately are the most common form of crew accommodation in the city, but visiting crew can obtain an Orams Crew Card for discounts on restaurants, gyms and more across the city during their stay.

For crew looking to get out of town on days off, Dardanella’s captain recommends catching waves in Piha, taking a tour around Waiheke Island, indulging in a shopping spree at the Matakana Sunday markets or tackling the three-hour mountain bike trail to geothermal hotspot Rotorua.

Picton Marina

The Marlborough Sounds are an extensive network of charming waterways on the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. Visitors are drawn to the tranquil cruising grounds as well as the vineyards on shore, which are famed for producing the country’s top Sauvignon Blanc wines. Here the marinas are often smaller, as Dardanella’s captain explains that boats passing through are more likely to drop anchor in sheltered bays then heading into a port. “Picton is beautiful. You’ve got the vineyards, you’ve got the Sounds. It’s really picturesque,” he notes.

Picton Marina is one of the best superyacht marinas in new zealand for crew to explore

Picton Marina is one of the larger marinas in the Marlborough Sounds. It is only 10 minutes away from the local airport and can accommodate yachts up to and over 35 metres LOA. Services encompass electricity, water, laundry, fuel, waste disposal and 24 hour security. Hotels, motels and rental apartments provide crew accommodation close to the marina. In the last year, superyachts including 34.14 metre Integrity , 40.16 metre Mahoenui and 32 metre Duchessa I all berthed in Picton.

Crew Activities & Hot Spots

The town’s tourist board recommends Seumus’ Irish Bar and the Thirsty Pig as two pubs close to the waterfront with a lively atmosphere for crew to enjoy on a night off, complete with live music and sports screenings. A delicacy in the surrounding area is green-lipped mussels, which are best enjoyed at the Mussel Pot Café in nearby Havelock harbour.

For activities on crew days off, the 73.5km Queen Charlotte track is a main attraction in the Marlborough Sounds. This scenic route winds through the native Bush and offers hiking and biking with stunning vistas of the waters. Fishing, dolphin watching and kayaking in the Queen Charlotte track are other activities recommended by the local tourist boards, making this another one of the great superyacht marinas in New Zealand for crew to visit.

Guest Reviews

When I did the research and read “Bucket List” I thought “This could be it!” I wasn’t wrong! An absolutely amazing day that none of us will ever forget. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality, great food and astounding fun-filled water activities on this truly beautiful vessel. With love and hugs from your newly adopted family members.

An exceptional week’s charter. I seldom find I can say this, but what Alan, Karen & Conrad provided was beyond my expectation. A truly memorable and enjoyable time was had by all!

Thank you so much for a wonderful week of family fun, eating crayfish, and mussels in Karen’s Thai curry, yum. Our wonderful skipper who kept us safe and of course I must mention Trout Valley & Cecelia, and dear old Moet. I loved climbing Rawhiti hill, I want to be buried there, on top of the world with my Maori brothers. I nearly forgot your fresh bread Karen, mmm. I could fill up the pages ahead retelling the wonders of New Zealand’s green seas, rugged scenery and sitting serenely in the beautiful bays, sleek, spacious, “State of the Art” Alan & Karen’s Bucket List beauty.

My daughter, Camille, booked this amazing birthday weekend for my 30th!!! Birthday. We all had a marvellous time – fishing (caught 3 snapper for dinner) & Sam dived with Conrad (skipper) for scallops which we dined on that night with crayfish on the BBQ. Alan & Karen were very hospitable, taking us to gorgeous bays, beaches & fabulous walks. Many, many grateful thanks- we all had a super time – the best birthday I could ever have asked for, thanks family. Hope to be back for more than a weekend!
