Bluewater Sailboat – Hardin 45

Also called: bounty 44, hardin 44, hardin voyager 45.

In the late 1970s, Bill Hardin , best known as a pioneer of the Taiwanese boat manufacturing business for the American market, designed the Hardin 45 “Voyager.” It’s a heavy displacement bluewater yacht that’s especially well-suited to cruising in luxury and style. Hardin International produced the boats in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, between 1977 and 1982 and sold them through its US distributor, East-West Yachts in Marina Del Rey, California. Originally built and sold as the Bounty 44, Hardin made extensive improvements to the yacht in 1980. These included expanding the boat’s length to 45′ 2″ and reducing the draught from five and a half inches to five and a half inches.

The transom was trimmed along the way, and a couple of portlights in the hull were relocated to the aft cabin roof. Dealers would refer to both boats as the Hardin 45 to avoid confusion among clients who might not notice the difference.

These Bluewater sailboats were generally of high quality, with great structural integrity and joiner work. By the time the facility closed in the mid-1980s, approximately 130 Hardin 45s had been produced.

  • LOA: 45′ 2″
  • LWL: 34′ 6″
  • Beam: 13′ 4″
  • Draft: 5′ 6″
  • Displacement: 32,000 lbs.
  • Ballast: 8,500 lbs.
  • Sail Area: 809 sq.ft.
  • Bridge Clearance: 56′ 0″
  • Headroom: 6′ 3″
  • Fuel: 200 US Gal.
  • Water: 200 US Gal.
  • Holding: 25 US Gal.
  • Designer: Bill Hardin
  • Builder: Hardin International Co.
  • Also Known As: Bounty 44, Hardin 44, Hardin Voyager 45

The majority of the thought behind the design of the Bluewater Sailboat Hardin 45 appears to have been to optimize the experience under anchor. With so much glass above deck (giving in that all-important “light and airy” feel), storm shutters for all of that glass are practically required for those planning bluewater passages. Back in the day, the factory offered fibreglass storm shutters, but few people took advantage of the offer.

The elegant and roomy interiors finished in hand-made teak drew the most attention in these center-cockpit designs. The split-level salon serves as the centerpiece of the accommodations, providing an open and airy sensation thanks to the abundant light streaming in through the elevated salon glass, portlights, and butterfly hatch. Two seagoing berths were located on the lower split level. There are two pilot berths in the mid-cabin ahead of this section, which many uses as a “storage garage,” while on some boats, this area was changed to make place for a larger master head with tub/shower combo. There is also a big aft stateroom with an extra head. A few charter boats were created, which packed additional cabins into the arrangement. A v-berth and a double cabin stateroom were located forward the salon.

Performance

At 32,000 pounds, the Bluewater Hardin 45 is clearly a hefty boat with poor light-air performance. On the other hand, with only 25% of their weight in ballast and a shoal draught keel, they don’t go very far in blow. They are, nonetheless, really comfy.

At least one Hardin has been credited with a nine-year circumnavigation; after 38,000 miles under the keel. It is noted that it isn’t that fast for a boat, but she’s very swift for a home. Another Hardin sailed for 10,000 miles confirms that she is a solid, slow, and comfortable, Bluewater Sailboat.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

Bill Hardin, probably best known for being a pioneer of the Taiwanese boat building industry for the American market, penned the Hardin 45 “Voyager” in the late 1970s. It’s a heavy displacement bluewater boat particularly well set up for cruising in comfort and style. The boats were built between 1977 and 1982 in Kaohsiung Taiwan by Hardin International and sold through their U.S. distributor, East-West Yachts in Marina Del Rey, California. Originally built and sold as the Bounty 44, the boat got an update in 1980 when Hardin made some significant changes. These included extending the boat length to 45′ 2″ and a six inch reduction in draft from to five and a half. Along the way the transom was trimmed down and a couple of portlights in the hull were relocated to the aft cabin top. To reduce confusion to customers who often wouldn’t notice the difference, dealers would refer to both boats as the Hardin 45.

The boats were generally of quality construction with excellent structural integrity and good joiner work. A total of around 130 Hardin 45s were built by the time the factory closed in the mid 1980s.

These center-cockpit designs had most of their attention in their beautiful and spacious interiors finished in hand crafted teak. The centrepiece of the accommodations is a split level salon giving an open and airy feel due to the copious amounts of light coming in from the raised salon glass, portlights and butterfly hatch. On the lower of the split levels were two seagoing berths. In the mid-cabin forward of this area are two pilot berths, many use this area as a “storage garage” while on some boats of this area was modified to make room for a larger master head with tub/shower combination. There’s also large aft stateroom with an additional head. A few boats were built for chartering which crammed more berths into the layout. They had a v-berth as well as a double cabin stateroom forward of the salon.

It seems most of the thought behind the design of Hardin 45 was to optimize the experience under anchor. With so much glass above deck (bringing in that all important “light and airy” feel), it’s nearly essential for those planning bluewater passages to have a set of storm shutters for all of that glass. Fiberglass storm shutters were offered by the factory back in the day, but not many took the offer.

At 32,000 pounds The Hardin 45 is well and truly in the heavy boat category with weak light air performance. Yet on the other end of the spectrum, with only 25% of their weight in the ballast with shoal draft keel, they don’t go very far in blow. They are however very comfortable.

At least one Hardin owned by Gordon and Joan Mery has been credited with a nine year circumnavigation, they commented after 38,000 miles under their keel, “it isn’t that fast for a boat, but she’s pretty quick for a house”. Another owner having singlehanded 10,000 miles in his Hardin confirms she is “solid slow and comfortable” and tells of an episode where he was caught in a 75 mph blow with twenty foot breaking seas saying, “I didn’t go anywhere, but it was comfy”.

Boat History

A brief glimpse into 50,000 ocean miles aboard CARRICKLEE, by Bob and Carolyn Mehaffy

"We bought CARRICKLEE in San Diego in June 1992 on a return trip from Mexico, having left months earlier from San Francisco abord our Columbia 40, RESOLUTE. During the year period between 1992 and the end of 1996, we made many trips along the California coast between Bodega Bay and the Offshore Islands of Southern California. In those same years we made numerous offshore passages from San Francisco to the Farallon Islands, carrying reserach scientists to and from those Islands. We also made trips from San Francisco to the California Delta, exploring this amazing water world between the San Francisco Bay and the cities of Sacramento and Stockton.

While we were learning to cruise aboard CARRICKLEE in the 4 1/2 year period between 1992 and late 1996, we also began to outfit the boat for ocean cruising. When we had bought the boat, it was virtually new and not equipped for cruising; this we spent those first years getting it ready to go to sea.

After we retired in January of 1997, we set out from San Francisco on a passage to the Hawaiian Islands. On this first trip, we sailed to each of the major Hawaiian Islands as well as out to Midway Atoll, doing research and writing for our second book, CRUISING GUIDE TO THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS. In mid-1998 we set out on a passage from Honolulu to Seattle. We then spent time cruising all of Puget Sound, Canada′s West Coast area and Alaska as far north as Glasier Bay. We ended our 1997-1999 cruising in San Diego, crossing the border into Mexico on Jan.1,2000.

We spent the years 2000-2002 cruising Mexico from Ensenada far into the Sea of Cortes many times, visiting most of the Islands and villages in the northen part of the Sea, then hauling the boat each of those three years at Marina Seca in San Carlos. In late 2003, we continued cruising from San Carlos to Chiapas in Southern Mexico and on into Guatemala and El Salvador, leaving CARRICKLEE in El Salvador for the summer season. After returning to the boat in the fall of 2004, we sailed on to Nicargua, Costa Rica, Panama and Ecuador. We spent 2004-2006 making passages to various destinations in Ecuador, including Guayaquil and the Galapagos Islands. From the Galapagos Islands, we sailed back to Costa Rica and Panama, where we took delivery of a new sportboat. We then sailed again to La Libertad, Ecuador, where we left the boat on the hard in the summer months while we returned to the USA.

In late 2006, we returned from Ecuador to Panama and transited the Panama Canal in January of 2007 into the Caribbean. We spent our first season in the Caribbean in Bocas del Toro and crossed to Cartagena, Colombia, where we hauled the boat for the summer while we returned to the USA. During the years 2007-2010 we cruised the coastlines of Colombia, Panama, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, the offshore Islands of Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. While cruising the Caribbean, we returned to Cartagena each summer to store the boat while we flew back to the USA. Between late 2010 to 2012, we slowly made the long passage from Cartagena, Colombia, to Mazatlan, Mexico. This was one of the most enjoyable of our many passages.

During the years between 2012-2014, we made many passages in Mexico between Zihuatanejo and Cabo San Lucas, and far north into the Sea of Cortes. During the years 2014-2017, we sailed from Mazatlan to the USA, spending our time reseaarching and revising our Cruising Guide to the San Francisco Bay area. When that book revision was complete, we also went on to complete the revision of our Cruising Guide to the Hawaiian Islands before returning to Puerto Vallata and Mazatlan in 2018-2019."

It was at this point that the current owner purchased "Carricklee" from Bob & Carol in 2020 but has not had the opportunity to sail her much. All the while, though, he made a myriad small improvements and maintained her really well, thanks to the excellent service providers in Mazatlan.

Accommodations

Going down through the companionway, to port is an L shape galley with double stainless-steel sinks, a gimbaled oven/stove and lots of storage. The top & side loading fridge/freezer is located comfortably in the corridor connecting the galley to the aft cabin.

The corridor provides more storage area, a top counter for navigation charts and an access to the diesel engine and electrical panels. The aft cabin has a double bed orientated from beam to beam with lots of natural light coming from sides/aft portholes and a top hatch.

To starboard heading forward a door separates the cabin from the head/stall shower that can also be accessed from the starboard side corridor. Leaving the head going forward, the corridor is hosting a work-bench and is leading to the main cabin area straight into a diner-style dinette across from the galley.

Going forward from the Galley area, down two steps, is a large Salon with comfortable settees on starboard and port as well as Pilot Berths above the settees on both sides. A drop-leaf table is centered and can be passed on both sides when folded. Forward is the forward head.

Boat: Hardin 45, 14M, The Shawnee
lovers,

There were an estimated 130 Hardin 45s made. I am trying to track down the numbers, ship name, owner, and status. If you know of one of these visit my webpage and see if there is any Hardin info that you can help me out with.

Cheers
Safe Sailing.

. My guess is $65000 US to owner. It's been upgraded with spars, , , seems pretty solid but cosmetically wanting. Doesn't seem as solid as our Hans 34, but then nothing built in the last 60 years is. That is by the way.
fair winds to you

pigeon. My daughter, who has a PhD (cambs) in bird spotting thought the 'out of the water' profile of the Hardin - with those big, buxom bilges carried well forward reminded her of the shape of a pigeon - so Kereru it had to be. (I could never imagine myself calling out "Betty Ann" over the radio!)

We are based in , and are preparing the boat for some , which will hopefully stretch out to a - first mate permitting! Our list of jobs includes re-bedding all the fittings and windows to keep the where it ought to be (outside), replacing the rocks and cement under the main mast post with something more akin to boat building materials, taking the support for the mizzen mast right down to the hull, raising the height of the poop stanchions and having a solid stainless rail welded on............ I could go on!

Despite all of the above she's a great, solid and very comfortable ship. I particularly like the quote from circumnavigators Gordon and Joan Mery - "Our Hardin 45 - which we've lived aboard since June of 1980 - isn't that fast for a boat, but she's pretty quick for a house..."

Happy Sailing
Richard, NZ

smackdaddy said: black, check out this thread: The Salt's Corner Table There are several posts by Jeff and others talking about these comparisons. I can't remember one specific to Taiwanese boats - so I'm interested in this conversation. I'll add it to the "Salt's Thread" as well. That thread is just a great place to put together the best posts so you don't have to dig forever for the info and so these guys don't have to answer questions repeatedly. There was also a great discussion in the "Production Boats and the Limits" thread where these guys helped define the bluewater versus coastal cruiser issue a bit. Happy hunting. Click to expand...

Winn said: Black, you are welcome to come see my Hardin 44 anytime, and my arm doesn't have to get twisted to take a ride. I may not have as much sailing experience as some, but I may have a better time. I would compare the Hardin to performance sailboats like an Austin Healey to a Chevy Corvette. The boat has soul and character. I have never had a bad ride in the boat, ever. I take it out several times a week. It may not win a race, but she's not slow either. It's good to ask ask people their opinions on boats, but you will never know unless you go out on it, touch it, feel it, smell it. I don't like my Hardin, I love it. All boats have issues, find one you can fall in love with. Winn Click to expand...

"One other thought, what other boats can you buy for $100k that are bigger, better, safer, saltier, and more soulful boat than the Hardin for the price range? I found it difficult to find more boat for the money." With the exception of the word "Bigger" (which should only apply to a dockside liveaboard and not a sea boat) and perhaps "Soulfull" which is in the heart of the beholder, I would suggest a Kelly Peterson 44 if distance cruising is the goal, which is a better sailing boat on all points of sail, and in all wind ranges, is easier to handle in across the board, and which offers a much more comfortable motion in a seaway. Respectfully, Jeff

I agree I have had one for two years went all over east coast. and I love it, especialy in a storm if you ever get caught out there you feel real safe, they are not fast but mine is built and I love to sail her.

And the thing is, there is no convincing those that don't like the boat, or any particular boat, for whatever reason. I don't mean that you won't change their mind. I mean it's *irrelevant* to attempt to change their mind. Same thing with motorcycles and cars.

hardin 45 sailboat data

I'd point out that Jeff_H"s criticisms aren't subjective, but objective, based on his experience with the yards in question and the practices found there. This is not a matter of disliking the boats, but rather the construction practices and materials often used in them. He clearly states his preference is for a different style of boat, but I don't believe he is allowing that to bias his judgement on why these boats are not the best choice.

Winderlust I love the lines on this boat and in fact have look at her several times. She is in my marina. That said what scare the poo out of me about this boat is I have not see her leave the dock in over two years. They keep her clean but I have never seen anyone on her or sail her

the boats that truly did give the bad rap for taiwanese boats were not the hardins,. they were the formosas. the formosas were built with little or no quality control and have lasted accordingly. the hardins were built in a different yard and under different circumstances than were the formosa and other garden design productions. bill hardin had better control over his yard and the families that did the work'-- go for the hardin ketch--she is an awesome boat. if you are looking for the folks who have these boats, see the leaky teaky yacht club in yahoo or the leaky teaky tavern in facebook. i own a formosa 41. there are folks there who have the histories and s more details of these boats--and every one in the group is an owner. we would be most happy to help you and have you join us should you desire. as for the bias you will find regarding these boats--they are either loved or hated, there is no in between. many folks find a special passion for them as they are awesome boats. before you rule it out get a surveyor and go look at it.thoroughly. this particular boat looks more fiberglass than mine is--the formosas had much different construction than the hardin 45. hardin 4 is much more fiberglass, deck and cabin house. formosa used wood. the boats that had most problems were the kind like mine--built with the wood coachhouse. if you like the boat, buy it--after survey. there is no dictating of passion for boats--if you have passion for the boat--is a good thing. there are support groups for folks like us--these groups have much interchange if information for repairing and maintaining these boats. you are not and will not be alone. good luck whatever you decide.

hardin 45 sailboat data

I come from another tradition of boats (Scandinavia), so I'm obviously biased. Having said that, I think the boats look like something they're not (traditional), and that always scare me away. It also looks complex, rigging wise, e.g. the bobstay and associated rigging = extra stuff that can go wrong - as well as overly heavy, which not only affects sailing-performance, but also seriously affects the work and strength required by those sailing the boat, especially when the sh1t hits the fan. Also the interior look like it is homemade from a big chunk of teak - again, that might just be a style, but most Scandinavian boatbuilders would not get away with something that crude. But as a liveaboard it seems quite nice with a lot of space.

blackjenner said: Wow, that was fast. I think it depends on what you are looking for. I've seen a crapped out Hunter and a Catalina in my search and a pristine Hardin, with glass decks, aluminum spars, great sails and a fairly new Perkins. I'm not going to defend any boat I'm looking at. What I am going to do is look closely, pay attention to unbiased and informed opinions, and go in with as much information as I can. It really depends on the boat, how well you check it out and who your surveyor is. Good luck in your search. Click to expand...

congratulations on your purchase--to the fella who sed that a heavy boat makes ye work more-- BALDERDASH!!!!!! in SPADES. that is such bunk. i have a heavy boat and i love her--is easier to sail than a performance cruiser-- actually responds. she looks traditinal clipper and sails like a dream. i absolutely LOVE my formosa41..... only thing i would replace her with would be a formosa 51 or a hardin 45 or a vagabond 47. nice heavy boats make cruising a dream not a nightmare. tried performance boats--we were so exhausted at every place we stopped it was ridiculous-we were too exhausted to enjoy much of the areas.. wasnt cruising in comfort. was bashing. met big winds and seas in my formosa and i was happy-- she is heavy and solid and sails well. loves the wind. easy to steer even when i was hand steering her.

WanderingStar

Excellent. I was thrilled when I first bought my heavy ketch (39', 16 tons) and I still love her. I'm happy aboard, sailing or moored. And I singlehand her constantly. Fair winds!

When I read the earlier postings on this thread, I was surprised that nobody pointed out to Smackdaddy regarding the difference between Taiwan built versus Cheoy Lee built boats. Cheoy Lee is a reputable Hong Kong shipyard with over a hundred years of boat building experience (not too many of our yachtyards in the US can make the same claim). They recently moved their operations to southern China (just like everybody else). They built beautifully crafted sailing yachts mostly during the seventies when Hong Kong was still British. They built them to Lloyd's specifications, but I probably would not buy a used Cheoy Lee now mostly because of the teak decks (just personal preference). I don't believe they are building anymore sailboats. Now their business is mostly geared towards custom motor boats of the superyacht variety and ocean going tugs.

As someone that constantly searches all the sail boat sales sites.. I can't keep from lingering on all the "leaky teaky" boat ads. this one in Deale MD is breathtaking to just view online. I'd dare not go see it. although I could never afford a boat even near that price range. 1981 Hardin Ketch Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com
