Hi John, Thanks for your comments. Yes, some of our team are sailors themselves, which is why most of our products were developed. We started in 2005 with the SailTimer tacking software, and the Wind Instrument in 2012, so a very dedicated team. Designing, developing, testing, refining and manufacturing wireless electronics and chartplotter apps like ours actually requires personnel on multiple continents. But as you perceived, we act like a startup, and are trying to innovate with better products and lower prices. Digital technology is opening up new opportunities and allows us to bypass some of the traditional monopolies. For example, we have crowdsourced wind zones coming soon in the SailTimer app to let sailors know what the wind is doing beyond the next headland, which has never been possible before.

Great concept, I’m looking forward to trying it out when it arrives next month.
Working with the website, you can tell that you’re dealing with a small operation, the inventor themselves or a 1-2 person business. Which I actually prefer. It’s not as polished, but you can tell there’s real passion for the product. I prefer passion to polish.

I have used the product for two and a half years now. It has worked flawlessly. I had some issues with the app which turned out to be a navionics /garmin issue. But Sailtimer support helped me sort it out. I can’t wait for my Airlink to arrive.

My SailTimer is rock solid. It’s been up and running in 40MPH winds with gust to 60MPH. Happy to say those winds were clocked with the boat on the trailer in front of our camp. We took down the home weather unit since the SailTimer is our go to unit. Looking forward to the SailTimer Air Link being delivered.

I bought my unit a couple of months ago. While I had a couple of issues, including learning to use the unit and getting it to interface with my iPad (they discovered a bug that interfered with my iOS) but the support was top notch I must say, nobody is perfect but you guys have been awesome to deal with, from tech service throughout the issue to resolving it once the true issue was found. Thank you again!

Eduardo, Thanks for your comments! Don’t worry; the Wind Instrument comes with a lifetime warranty against damage from sea birds. This is noted on the order and warranty pages and was announced in the SailTimer newsletter a few years ago (wi-rb.com/newsletter).

My initial thoughts of this device is that it’s almost too good to be true. It works fantastically yet it’s ridiculously cheap. Given that I have a rotating mast, my only other option for accurate wind data at the cockpit was to drop $2k on one of the other brands with a mast rotation sensor. This one does the same thing for 1/4 the price. The jury is still out on durability since I just got it, but time will tell. It does seem somewhat delicate but as long as I don’t sail in a hurricane and a bird doesn’t land on it, it should be fine. Super happy with the apps as well. I use mine with an old iPhone 6 Plus in a waterproof case as my dedicated chart plotter and wind data display (NMEA Sail and MID WiFi apps are awesome for this although I wish these were integrated into the SailTimer Charts app for IOS) and I’m able to replicate a $3500 system for $500. Not bad at all. Once the new Air Link is released I should be able to do even more. Bargains in the boating world are practically unicorns. This is one of the few. Great product!

Mast unit works well. PAY ATTENTION to guidance on keeping battery charged. IOS apps work best. Originally bought the older AirLink unit to facilitate Android connectivity. In January I bought the revision 3 AirLink unit with expedited setup. Works great!

Used this instrument on a Rhodes19 this summer. I like how it performed and would recommend this device. Had one issue when removed at the end of the season. Somehow water got into the nose cone and damaged the connector on the instrument and battery. Sailtimer has agreed to send replacement parts. I will install using a dab of dielectric grease on the connector next season to help eliminate this problem in the future.

“I’ve had an excellent experience with SailTimer. The product arrived in a timely manner. They respond to questions very quickly and with clear information. In testing the SailTimer in my home I damaged the battery plug. SailTimer has graciously allowed me to return the product in spite of the damaged plug as long as I pay for the replacement battery. They have been more than fair in all of their dealings with me.”

Looking forward to using it more with different apps. Seeing wind with Navionics charts in the SailTimer app is great.

Love the wind instruments on the race boat, but on my Mac, the hull speed doesn't justify the $2-6k. All I want are four things: true & apparent wind direction, and true & apparent wind speed. Any of you folks come up with a cheap solution to getting these four in the cockpit? Jeff
If you can deal with only apparent, here is a good $300 solution. http://www.ultimatepassage.com/cgi-bin/up/37328.html
Also, To get true wind the boat must also have a NMEA networkable boat speed instrument. The wind instrument uses boat speed and apparent wind speed and direction to calculate true wind.
If you can deal with apparent wind strength only there is a $20 solution. A few years ago, I built an anemometer on the cheap, using three table spoon measuring spoons as cups ($3) and a cap from a black spray paint can (free). This was mounted on a piece of old stantion (free) using a bearing scrounged from a dead VCR (free) and mounted on my stern rail using a BBQ mount I found in the garbage at our club (also free). To display the wind speed, I used a bicycle speedometer ($10 - 15). The wheel magnet for the speedometer was hot glued on the inside of the paint can cap and the pickup mounted on the post . Claibration was done by adjusting the wheel size of teh bike speedo, using a borrowed hand held anemometer and my wife's hair dryers as a wind source. Worked like a charm. Depending on the featuresof the bike speedo you will also be able to get average wind speed, max wind speed etc. Cheers Matt

Depends on the incremental adjustability of the bicycle speedometer, I would suppose. I'd bet it'd be close enough for our purposes.
When I calibrated it, I borrowed a fairly expensive handheld anemometer and my wife's hair dryer. Ther adjustments on the bike speedo were fine grained enough that i was able to get both to read exactly the same, on both the high and low setting for the hair dryer fan. Real world comparisons with other boats throughout the season usually had it in the same ballpark as other boats around us.. What complicated the comparisons a bit was that I had it mounted fairly low on the aft end of the boat as I was limited by the length of the wire on the speedo. (see pic, it's the black thing above the kayak next to the canadian flag) As a result readings with the boat pointed straight into the wind were not very accruate due to the dodger and other stuff. In terms of function vs. $$$ it came out waaaay ahead of the curve ......and it didn't look too bad either. Cheers Matt

Never saw my reserve but it is brown and tan. Yuk! since retired. After never having a reserve ride it 17 years, this last rig was having trouble and my end cells wouldn't inflate for the last 7 jumps without shaking and climbing the risers I decided to call it quits while I was ahead. I wonder if I could out my son in the harness and tow him behind the boat in close wind? Click to expand

I second that! Was a great packer, most of the local instructors had me pack theirs, I packed a lot of student rigs too. I would drop in and pack for a day. I got like 6 bucks a pack and it piled up in my account so I could jump all weekend for free When my rig would come back from a reserve repack, I learned the main pack was crap so I always unpacked and replaced the main. The funny thing is, I didn't do anything special, just paid attention to what I was doing. Sometimes I wonder if a perfect pack was any better than just stuffing. I too am sorry for the hijack

Think one of these would work? http://www.weatherinstruments.com/w...acrossetechnologywirelessweatherprocenter.cfm Oops just read it has a time lag of 17 sec. on the anemometer:cry:.

MOSCOW – Residents on Thursday will have a chance to set the rules for future wind development projects in their town – which may come sooner than they anticipate.
A special town meeting will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Town Hall, where people will vote on a proposed wind energy facility ordinance.
Under the proposed ordinance, which was designed by the planning board over the last several months, any wind turbine would be set back 2,500 feet from a permanent or seasonal residence, would be designed to avoid shadow flicker effects, would have to meet specific sound level limits and would require a decommissioning policy.
There are currently commercial wind projects proposed for Highland Plantation and Bingham, in addition to other locations. “They’re all around us,” Selectman Donald Beane said. “If a company were interested in coming here we’d like to have the regulations ready when and if we might need them.”
That may come sooner than people think.
Testing poles in Moscow and Caratunk have been gathering wind data for a little more than a year. Next fall, the potential developers will know whether a commercial wind project in the two communities is feasible, said Larry Warren, of New Portland, who operates Maine Windpower LLC.
His partner in the potential project is Cianbro Corporation, in Pittsfield. While Cianbro has been involved with constructing wind projects in the past, this would be its first time acting as a developer, Warren said.
The partners currently have a license agreement with landowner Plum Creek for the feasibility study. If the wind results prove positive, the two will enter into a long-term agreement with Plum Creek for the commercial wind project.
The developers are eyeing a ridge in the northern part of town near Mayfield Township, within a mile of the former radar facility.
Moscow’s proposed ordinance doesn’t appear to hinder plans. “We think what they’re proposing is quite reasonable. The land areas that we’ve entered into an agreement with Plum Creek on are really quite remote. There aren’t any residential places nearby,” he said.
“We recognize that the natural resources in that area are particularly important to many of the residents and many of the employers in the region who look to nature-based tourism and hunting and fishing,” he said. “We’d like to work to ensure that those resources are protected or enhanced.”
In the spring, the developers will study possible impacts to migratory birds, bat populations and vernal pools. They will examine groundwater tables and soils. Then they will look for specific turbines with blades to match the wind capacity and towers compatible with the soil.
What drew them to Moscow? The large radar facility built by the Air Force, Warren said, since there are already transmission lines and roads in place. “Putting a wind farm in that area didn’t seem to be anything that would be a significant change in the uses of the region,” he said.
