Tavern of the seas – the royal cape yacht club.

T T he Royal Cape Yacht Club, based in Cape Town, is closely associated with the city’s seafaring culture and has been a home from home for visiting sailors since 1905.  

Look down on Table Bay from Signal Hill on a Wednesday evening between October and March and you’ll see a scattering of sails fluttering out in the bay.  

This is the regular Wednesday night regatta, hosted by the Royal Cape Yacht Club, and an event that is as much part of the Cape summer scene as the south- easter that sends white clouds pouring over Table Mountain.  

The club, based in the Table Bay Harbour , is closely associated with the city’s seafaring culture, harking back to the days when the city was known as the Tavern of the Seas, a place where sailors could unwind after many days at sea on the route between Europe and the East.  

The Royal Cape Yacht Club continues this tradition by offering around-the-world sailors a place to moor their yachts and to meet members of the local yachting community.  

The club started out life in a humble boat shed at the foot of Loop Street back in 1905 , before a landfill project extended the city centre into an area now known as the Foreshore. It received the Royal Charter shortly after 1914 and moved into its present premises at the Small Craft Basin inside the harbour a decade after World War II.  

However, it was only after the inaugural Trans-Atlantic Cape to Rio yacht race in 1971 that yachting in the city really took off. Today, the club’s membership hovers around the 1   700-mark, the adjacent marina offers moorings for over 4 00 yachts, and the club is the centre of the city’s amateur yachting community and the base for a sailing academy.  

Visit on any given day and you’ll more than likely find a few 'yachties' messing about on their boats, a couple of international visitors passing through and some local folk catching up with each other over a beer.  

The club is housed in an unassuming, low-slung building featuring a restaurant and sunny outdoor terrace overlooking the marina, a bar, visitors' lounge, offices and several venues, like the Galley, Chartroom and Regatta Centre, which are rented out for parties and conferences.  

Although it’s members’ only, you may enter as a guest of a member, or you can take out a short-term membership for the duration of your stay in Cape Town. (And, no, you don’t have to own a yacht.)  

Over the years, the club has played host to several international yachting events, among them the Whitbread, Volvo and Hong Kong Challenge.

You can drive yourself to the club or get a taxi.

If you go out yachting, take a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes.

Cape Town has a wide range of accommodation from B&Bs to backpackers' lodges, through to 5 -star hotels.  

What to eat 

Just down the road from the club on Quay 500 is an old seafood restaurant called Panama Jack ’ s which is popular with the locals. The club also has a restaurant.

Arrive at your wedding destination on a yacht. Capture your wedding memories with yachts and Table Mountain in the background. This is all possible at the Royal Cape Yacht Club, the ultimate secret wedding destination for Club members and a few who are in the know. The beautiful Regatta Centre is our flagship venue and accommodates up to 180 wedding guests at a time with a dance floor. We also welcome smaller private celebrations in our upstairs Chart Room for up to 60 guests. Our super inhouse chef and his team ensure the finest of quality cuisine at reasonable prices. RCYC is not subject to load shedding as we are situated in the Port and noise restrictions don’t apply. Safe and free parking is available at the club. Club members benefit from venue hire and F&B discounts. Room Capacity: 1 – 180 pax (weddings with dance floor) 1 – 200 pax (cocktail parties) Welcome to The Regatta Centre, a spectacular wedding venue uniquely situated in the Port of Cape Town. This light and airy multi-functional venue easily accommodates 180 guests seated at tables, or 200 guests, cocktail style. Permanent bar facilities ease service, while the waterfront side is composed of glass sliding doors giving a spectacular view onto the marina, even in unpleasant weather. The mere size of the venue makes it possible to host your wedding ceremony and reception under one roof – a great time and money saver. RCYC provides its own catering and a delightful selection of canapes, buffet and plated options are available. This 18m x18m venue is available for Halaal and Kosher weddings, in which case a “Dry Hire” applies (venue only) with certain requirements with regards to catering. With your imagination and the skill of our staff, this venue can be transformed into your dream event.

Seating Capacity Seats 60 people This upstairs venue is private with a superb view of the Marina from our ‘bow’ shaped balconies. Concertina doors slide aside to merge the two venues into one larger area suitable for weddings and parties for up to 60 guests. The venue has it’s own private bar facilities, is fully air-conditioned and has a Smart TV to display a presentation of your special moments..

A Club at the service of the Principality's international influence

An allied member of the Yacht Club de France, the Yacht Club de Monaco is also twinned with 15 prestigious clubs and maintains reciprocal agreements with 67 others all over the world.

Twinning between clubs enables:

– The development of sporting activities between clubs, with all members being able to participate freely under equal conditions

– Free access for society members of the twinned clubs to the premises, restaurant and lounges and services on offer on presentation of their membership card

– Access to the boutiques in both clubs

– Exchanges between the two clubs Sailing Schools, including competitions and coaches.

– Any active member of a club who takes up residence in the country of a twinned club is obliged to change affiliation to that club after six months residence and to conform to the statutes of the club concerned.

In addition to twinning agreements, the Yacht Club de Monaco has also established privileged relations with about 67  yacht clubs all over the world. These reciprocal agreements allow YCM society members to call into these clubs and have free access to the clubhouse on presentation of their membership card and letter of recommendation from their Club.

Our food is prepared fresh and from local suppliers, and often accompanied by our very own full-bodied coffee blend – The Royal Cape Roast.
